The high festive spirit reverberating around Mid Canterbury was confirmed in Paymark figures released yesterday. Paymark, which processes three-quarters of all electronic transactions in New Zealand, yesterday released spending figures for the first three weeks of December, seeing a 3.6 per cent increase in Mid-South Canter-
bury compared with the same period last year. Timaru and Ashburton enjoyed a $61.3 million spending spree, up $2.2m from 2012. Canterbury experienced one of the largest spending increases, rising 7.6 per cent from last year with $414.4m spent. Overall spending in New Zealand made positive reading for retailers with a 6.9 per cent jump from last year with the figures revealing $3.6 billion-worth
of transactions processed. Paymark head of sales and marketing Paul Whiston said the third week of December had seen the Christmas rush continue. Last Friday was the busiest day of the year to date, with $235.6 million through the tills, up 5.7 per cent on the same day in 2012. “Last week we saw the usual pre-Christmas jump with Kiwis spending more than $1.3 billion

between December 15 and 21. This is a strong performance and growth so far for December is still ahead of the year-to-date average.” Mr Whiston said growth momentum sustained across a number of sectors including accommodation (up 11.9 per cent), restaurants, bars and cafes (10.4 per cent), food takeaways (10.4 per cent) and hardware/building supplies (10.1 per cent). “Conversely, internet spend-
ing may be impacting some sectors, such as clothing retailers and bookshops, which are showing low growth or falling sales,” Mr Whiston said. “The growth rates this December have been higher than we’ve experienced in a number of years. With a couple of shopping days still to go before Christmas, as well as the Boxing Day sales, we’re anticipating that December will be a strong month for many retailers.” Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!
