Tonga celebrates first winter Olympian

Tonga’s Bruno Banani has qualified as the Pacific nation’s first winter Olympian, the International Luge Federation (FIL) announced, in an achievement every bit as remarkable as Jamaica’s famous bobsled team. Banani, who hails from the tropical archipelago famed for its sunshine and white sandy beaches, will head for the frigid Russian resort of Sochi next year after finishing 28th out of 42 starters at a World Cup meet in Park City, Utah, comfortably making the top 38 cut-off needed to qualify, the FIL said. Banani, 25 was plucked from obscurity in 2008 and coaxed into taking up luge as part of a guerilla marketing campaign. At the time, he was an IT student named Fuahea Semi. A marketing company persuaded him to change his name to Bruno Banani, which is the name of a German underwear manufacturer, and become part of the luge circuit as a publicity stunt.

Deer makes appearance at sports store Shoppers looking for post-Christmas bargains received a surprise at a northeastern Pennsylvania sporting goods store after a deer decided to join them. The deer walked through the front door of a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Reading on Friday afternoon. Store manager Brad Meyer says the deer slipped on the floor and a customer tackled it to the ground, preventing any injuries to customers or damage to the store. The store called the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which arrived and removed the deer.

There’s no word on where the deer was released.

Santa gangs rob jewellery shops Four armed men dressed as Santa have robbed a jewellery shop in a Tirana mall, police say, while another “Santa gang” injured two people during a robbery in neighbouring Kosovo. The four thieves, armed with automatic weapons, burst into the shop in the Albanian capital, threatening the owner at gunpoint as they filled sacks with luxury goods. Their abandoned car was found two kilometres from Tirana’s TEG shopping mall. Police found two automatic weapons in a bin near the mall. And in neighbouring Kosovo, two people were injured when three armed men dressed as Santa fled a jewellery shop after robbing it in the southern town of Prizren, media in Tirana reported.

Dubai promises record breaking NYE Dubai has promised to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a recordbreaking extravaganza featuring over 400,000 fireworks, the largest display the world has ever seen, its government said.

The United Arab Emirates city state, home to the world’s tallest tower, largest man-made island and one of the world’s busiest airports, will “break the Guinness World Record for the ‘Largest Firework Display’,” a government statement said. The six-minute show over two of its manmade islands - The Palm Jumeirah and The World - will “feature over 400,000 colourful fireworks and a series of amazing scenes designed exclusively for the event and set to a specially choreographed musical soundtrack.” The display will be overseen by more than 200 pyrotechnicians, and the fireworks will be launched from 400 locations, it added. Over the past few years, Dubai has been vying to become a permanent fixture on the world map of New Year celebrations, staging spectacular shows since the opening of the 828-metre Burj Khalifa tower (right) in 2010.

Turia moved by poem A poem written by a Kaikohe teenager urging people to reject negative stereotypes of her school, her home town and Maoridom has been read as far away as Parliament.

Maori Party co-founder Tariana Turia described the story about Shania Howard and her poem, published in Saturday’s Advocate, as inspirational and “a gift that keeps on giving”. Mrs Turia was moved to write to Shania and the newspaper to say how excited she was to be reminded of the creative talent, leadership potential and determination she saw each day in Maori youth around the country. “They encourage us to know our future is in great hands and for that we can all feel thankful that Shania has spoken up in the beautiful expression of her dreams for tomorrow. Hutholders say no to drunken youths

New Year celebrations have been cancelled and security will be beefed up at Lake Clearwater this year in an effort to curb the unruly behaviour which resulted in a number of arrests last year.

Hundreds of young people converged at the freedom camping site at Lake Camp. During the Lake Clearwater Hut Holders’ traditional New Year’s Eve disco, a large number of intoxicated youth went on a rampage,

lighting fires, burning a car, littering and fighting.

Hoons also reportedly drove at speeds of up to 120km/h in areas designated as 50km/h zones.

Timaru police responded and a number of arrests were made, during which officers were pelted with bottles.

Spokesperson for the hutholders, Andy Shearer, said the decision to call off the New Year’s Eve disco had been made to dissuade unsupervised youngsters from camping in the area.

“We want to reduce the amount of lawlessness and shenanigans we witnessed last year,” he said.

“We had a meeting with the council and police early in the year to come up with some ideas to deal with the issue, and we’ve asked for an increased police presence.”

The youngsters also copped the blame for leaving copious amounts of rubbish and human waste.

In order to combat the environmental destruction, the council has increased signage about littering around the freedom camping area and had additional rubbish skips and portable toilets installed in the area in preparation for this year’s influx of campers.

“It’s obviously a pristine environment up there and we want to keep it nice, but unfortunately some people just come up there

and trash the joint. We are asking people to use those bins and toilets,” Mr Shearer said.

“There are two aspects to it – there’s the littering and damage to the environment, and then there’s the shenanigans which could end up with someone getting injured or possibly killed, so we’ve asked for an increased police presence and also the council initiatives to combat those things.

“We’ve done our bit by cancelling the celebration this year to try and break that link.”

Staff at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park are ploughing through piles of festive recycling waste before the next onslaught arrives.

A steady stream of people had been unloading their Christmas recycling since the gates opened yesterday morning when the Guardian visited around lunch time. The park was closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Recovery Park site supervisor Glen Sole said in just a few hours the bins outside the depot had been replaced multiple times.

The cardboard and paper bins had been replaced twice but the

plastic bin had been changed four times in three hours.

“It’s just been insane really.”

Among the mountainous pile of cardboard was the packaging of many Christmas morning delights including soda streams, FurReal Friends, a gingerbread house box and Little Tikes. But more notably there were dozens and dozens of empty beer boxes.

Material processor Vonya Ross said it was bigger than last year.

Each bale of cardboard weighed 460kg; there were six bales done that morning with many to follow.

It would likely take days to clear, just in time for the New Year’s Eve recycling.

Four teenagers charged in relation to an attack on two German tourists in Whakatane have appeared in the Whakatane District Court.

Three males, aged 14, 17 and 18 and a 15-year-old female were charged with aggravated robbery.

They were remanded in custody to reappear in court on New Year’s Eve, police said.

The identities of the group were suppressed.

Police were still looking for a fifth youth who was believed to have been involved in the incident.

The couple, a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman - were attacked in their tent early yesterday morning.

The man lost teeth and suffered cuts and bruises, and the woman suffered facial and arm injuries, including fractures.

They remained in Whakatane Hospital Thursday night recovering from their injuries.

The pair were camping near a skatepark at the intersection of McAllister and Beach streets in Whakatane when they were woken.

They managed to escape their attackers and knocked at a nearby house for help. A member of the public who heard screams also contacted police. When officers arrived they found a group of people allegedly ransacking the tent.

They fled, but a police dog tracked them to a river, where two people were arrested, police said. Two others were arrested a short time later.

Woman driver three times legal drink limit

A woman stopped by police for speeding in the rain on Thursday night was found to be three times over the legal drink driving limit.

Ashburton Police sergeant Bryan Ennis said the woman - a 36-year-old from Christchurch - was stopped on State Highway 1 between Ashburton and

Chertsey at around 9pm.

She was clocked driving at 121km/h and returned a positive breath alcohol test. She was found to have a level of 1204mcg/l.

Mr Ennis said it was believed the woman was driving from Christchurch to Timaru.

He said the woman was more than three times the legal drink driving limit of 400mcg/l, was

speeding and was driving in wet conditions; a recipe for disaster.

She will appear in court charged with driving with excess breath alcohol in the New Year.

Mr Ennis said that was one of few incidents on Mid Canterbury’s roads so far this festive season, with most drivers complying with the road rules

and showing patience.

The main roads through Mid Canterbury were busy yesterday, as people headed off for a post-Christmas holiday, but overall police were pleased with driver behaviour.

The majority of motorists appeared to be headed south, where the weather is forecast to be much brighter than much of the rest of the country.

Child’s hand stuck The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade has had a relatively quiet festive season so far, with only two call-outs since Christmas Day. Late on Christmas Day they were called to a Clark Street address where a child got his hand caught in the springs of a trampoline.

Firefighters cut the springs and the child was seen to by St John Ambulance paramedics. Yesterday morning firefighters attended another medical call-out, helping an elderly person who had fallen on Cass Street.

AOS called to Rakaia Armed police were called to Rakaia on Thursday night to deal with a domestic incident. Ashburton Police sergeant Bryan Ennis said members of the Armed Offenders Squad – from both Christchurch and Timaru – were called to a Rakaia address at about 11pm. A 26-year-old man was found to be in possession of firearms and was arrested. Mr Ennis said the man had been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and he will appear in court in the New Year.

Hot rods were steadily rolling into Methven yesterday ahead of tomorrow’s Rods at Methven. Up to 2000 people are expected to flock to the event, which is held every two years. Around 50 cars will be on show outside the Blue Pub in central Methven from 10am until 3pm on Sunday. Money raised will go to the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade.

A woman is dead after a family gathering turned to tragedy in the Bay of Islands. The woman’s body was found at dawn yesterday, floating in the sea near the base of a steep cliff on Moturua Island.

The woman, aged in her sixties and believed to be from the US, was last seen yesterday as she headed off to walk a section of the track that spans the Department of Conservation island reserve.

An extensive search of the island, shore and surrounding waters was started by her family and other nearby boaties after she had failed to return at 5pm. An official Search and Rescue operation was mounted soon after.

Fresh attempt to tap Kotuku oil

BY LAURA MILLS A Perth company wants to drill oil wells at Kotuku, on the West Coast, next year and become the first commercial oil producer in the South Island.

Oil was first discovered in the Lake Brunner area in the late-1890s by workers cutting timber for the Midland railway line between Greymouth and Christchurch.

More than 30 shallow wells were drilled, many of which were left to bubble small amounts of oil and gas to the surface.

Aorere Resources said recently it had completed the sale of the permit to Petroleum Creek Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mosman Oil and Gas Ltd.

Chairman Dene Biddlecombe said they were pleased to complete this first stage of the partnership with Mosman through Petroleum Creek.

“We see substantial potential benefits to the West Coast of the South Island as we believe that this deal ensures significant investment in the petroleum sector there in the future.”

Mosman chairman John Barr said they planned to drill several wells in “this very prospective area” in 2014.

“Our objective is to be the first commercial oil producer in the South Island. We hope this will bring investment and jobs to the West Coast area, and we appreciate the positive reception by all stakeholders,” Mr Barr said.

Hawarden teenager Asra Ginders (below) had the Tinwald Pool to herself yesterday as low temperatures kept people away. However, Ashburton Community Pool head lifeguard, and big sister, Stacey Ginders said the outdoor pool temperature usually sat around 29degrees.

Staff were carrying out general poolside maintenance while the crowds were away including cleaning up some

vandalism done last week.

Vandals broke into the pool complex and pushed over potted plants and dumped dirt into the pool.

Ms Grinders (senior) said the mindless vandalism was disappointing and aside from closing the pool last Saturday, staff also had to vacuum every day since to remove the debris.

The pool is open every day between 1–7pm; but closed New Year’s Day.

A body has been found in Nelson Lakes National Park, where search teams are looking for a missing British tramper. The body, which is yet to be formally identified, was found today at the bottom of a 100 metre cliff. The location of the body was below the Lake Constance Bluff, which is on Andrew Wyatt’s intended route between Blue Lake Hut and Waiau Pass, police say. Mr Wyatt arrived in New Zealand on November 21 with the intention of walking the Te Araroa Trail, which linked tramping routes from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

Lifeguards ready Lifeguards are gearing up for the biggest weekend of the year as holidaymakers throughout the country throng at popular beaches.

Over summer, about 4000 volunteer lifeguards will spend more than 200,000 hours keeping a watchful eye on some 80 beaches around the country. Surf Life Saving NZ chief executive Paul Dalton said there would be massive crowds on beaches from today, come rain or shine, after people had made their way to holiday destinations over the last couple of days. “That’s when it will all start to hit in - it will go right through to New Year’s weekend or past then.”

Locals spend up large for festive season

Figures released yesterday confirm Kiwis have spent more than ever on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day – a trend reflected in Ashburton retail outlets.

Paymark, which processes around three-quarters of New Zealand’s electronic transactions, reported the biggest day on record with $238.4 million through the network on Christmas Eve – a whopping 18.5 per cent up on the same day in 2012.

It also saw the highest number

of transactions – at 4.35 million – and the largest number of transactions per second.

Paymark also reported a 12 per cent increase in spending through its network on Boxing Day, equivalent to an additional $14.4 million in retailers’ pockets, when compared to 2012.

The Canterbury spend for Christmas Eve and Boxing Day trended above national figures - up from $12.1M to $13.9M – a hike of 15.1 per cent on last year.

Ashburton Mega Mitre 10 general manager Simon Lye said

spending was well up on previous years.

“Last year was quite strong but this year was even better,” he said.

“We had a solid finish in the lead-up to Christmas, but Boxing Day was extremely busy.”

With Christmas out of the way, Mr Lye said shoppers appeared to have turned their attention to projects around the home and recreational pursuits.

“Outdoor furniture and camping gear was in demand, we also sold a lot of lawnmowers, water blasters, paint . . . people seemed

to be getting ready to hit projects around the home and garden,” he said.

This reflected a national trend.

Countrywide, sporting and camping equipment retailers reported particularly big days, both on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, up 20.2 per cent and 31.8 per cent respectively.

Mr Lye attributed the increased spend to higher levels of economic confidence – and wet weather on Boxing Day. A spokesperson from the Ashburton branch of Farmers also reported an increase in spending

this year, both before and after Christmas.

Dick Smith reported marginally softer spending before Christmas, but a busier than usual Boxing Day, with a steady flow of customers continuing yesterday.

On Christmas Eve, food and liquor retailers and department stores were amongst the biggest winners nationally, while shoppers turned their attention to clothing, jewellery, appliances, whiteware, electronics, floor coverings and furniture on Boxing Day.

Visitors nurture Kiwi connection

Thirty years ago, a 16-year-old city girl from the United States boarded a plane and flew into the great unknown – to live on a Dorie farm for a year.

Kelly Jaksa is now back in Mid Canterbury with her family, to spend Christmas with Barbara and Kelly Kingsbury – her host parents for the 12 months she spent here as an AFS student.

And three decades later Kelly finds everything “strangely familiar”.

“Ashburton is much more built up now, when I was first here there was no McDonald’s or Pizza Hut and there are far

more cows now,” she said.

When she left a chilly Maine winter for a Kiwi summer she knew very little about her destination.

“When I found out I was coming here, we didn’t even know where New Zealand was, we had to look it up to learn about it,” she said.

Kelly was the Kingsburys’ first AFS student, and she soon slotted into the family, between the couple’s then 15 and 17-year-old daughters.

“I absolutely loved it here,” she said.

Seven years after her initial stay as a student, Kelly was back in New Zealand, this time accompanied by her sister Mag-

gie and a childhood friend.

Ironically Mr and Mrs Kingsbury were also planning a surprise visit to the US in 1992.

“Luckily we were not planning for the same month,” Mrs Kingsbury said.

In 1996 Kelly was back, this time with her husband John Jaksa on their honeymoon, it was on this trip the newlyweds decided that if they had a daughter they would name her Rakaia.

The Kingburys have also made repeat visits to the US, to attend Kelly’s wedding, where they read an excerpt from Winnie the Pooh during proceedings, and when the children arrived – first Kayin, then Rakaia

followed by Bekah.

The children, who are visiting New Zealand for the first time, call the Kingsburys Nana and Papa.

Swimming with Hector’s dolphins at Akaroa ranks top of Kayin’s experiences and for Rakaia, visiting the town she was named after.

Maggie, her husband Dan Auxier and their two children, Riley and Sammy have also spent Christmas with the Kingsburys in Ashburton.

Tomorrow the Jaksa and Auxier families say goodbye and return to the US, but there will undoubtedly be more chapters added to this story in the years to come.

A plastic sword with steel attachments, a jolting Nerf gun and a Disney princess backpack fishing kit are among this year’s most dangerous items on toy store shelves, a consumer watchdog group says.

World Against Toys Causing Harm (Watch) recently released its annual list of the 10 worst children’s toys.

Watch director James Swartz said the focus of this year’s list was toy weapons including guns, slingshots, boomerangs and projectiles that he said could seriously harm children but continue to be found in toy stores.

“In today’s world, there is no excuse for outfitting children with realistic toy ‘weapons’ designed to produce dangerous and unnecessary thrills,” he said.

The list includes a number of toys that can be bought in New Zealand including the Max Steel Interactive Steel with Turbo Sword, the Disney Princess Backpack Fishing Kit and the Black Widow Folding Slingshot.

Also on the list and available locally are the Disney Baby Snow White, which has parts that can cause choking, the N-Strike Jolt Blaster and the Spooner Freestyle Board, a polythene board resembling a skateboard without wheels.

Mr Swartz said parents needed to be aware of classic toy dangers that reappear annually such as small parts, strings, toxic substances, rigid materials, and inaccurate warnings.

Vandals cause $800 damage to lights

The Christmas lights of one Methven house lost some shine when vandals attacked them three times in four days. But the mindless vandalism will not stop the goodwill of its owner who vows to carry on.

Methven resident Frank Sandys has decorated his residence for seven years, more recently his house on Lochhead Cresent. He was initially encouraged by his daughter Brooke, but now spends considerable time and money on lighting up his property.

“I get a kick out of it. People think I’m nuts, but I don’t care...”

He also dresses up as Father Christmas and, with his daughter, gives lollies to children.

Any donations raised by people viewing the festively decorated house went to the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade, where Mr Sandys is a volunteer fireman.

On Saturday night, a “monster cracker” firecracker was thrown into the lighting display, and then on Sunday night two more sets were destroyed.

However, there was “whopping” destruction on Christmas Eve when lights along the fence line of the property were pulled down and destroyed.

The neighbour’s house had also been targeted with 1200 lights broken.

“To have it happen three times, the first time I thought it was someone just having a bit of fun but...it’s just disappointing,” he said.

“They have run along the fence and taken what they could grab with their hand.”

The 23-year-old was hunting goats in rural Waihirere on Tuesday afternoon when he was shot in the chest at close range by a high powered rifle, police said.

He was initially taken to Gisborne Hospital in a critical condition, but was transferred to Auckland.

His parents had arrived in the country from Germany, she said.

An Auckland Hospital spokesman said the man was now in a stable but serious condition. Police had spoken with two members of the hunting party, but it was not yet known if charges had been laid.

Astronomers say it will be a particularly special event because it starts soon after the sun sets.

Partial eclipse begins about 6pm, while the moon will be completely within the Earth’s shadow by just after 7pm about 15 degrees above a flat horizon.

It means the best vantage point to view it will be on any eastern beach.

“The eclipse will already be underway when the sun is setting,” said Dr Christie. The full eclipse will last for one hour and 15 minutes.

“It will be quite low down when it’s in totality, so observ-

ers will need a clear eastern horizon.

“The ideal place would be an east coast beach, on either island, looking across the sea.”

The second eclipse will start late on October 8, with the full eclipse spanning midnight.

While it comes at a later, more unsociable hour, it’ll be higher in the sky and more visible for more areas, Dr Christie said.

The best way to view it, other than simply with the naked eye, is through a telescope or binoculars, he said.

A Finnish couple’s motorcycling tour of the North Island came to a shattering end yesterday after the 49-year-old male rider was involved in a crash in the Hawke’s Bay. While an investigation is underway initial reports from witnesses indicated the man had not seen an approaching utility vehicle. He was taken to Hawke’s Bay Hospital with moderate hip, arm and neck injuries, as well as concussion. His condition is listed as stable. The female driver of the utility, who was left shaken and taken from the scene by a family member, had seen the HarleyDavidson motorcycle pulling out in front of her, from a stop sign, and had tried to brake.

NEWSMAKERS OF 2013 As 2013 comes to an end and 2014 gets under way, the Guardian is taking a look back at the year that’s been and catching up with some of Mid Canterbury’s newsmakers. Today Guardian reporter Susan Sandys catches up with James McKenzie.

Mountain man in spotlight

t has been a case of “be careful what you wish for” for Mt Hutt Ski Area management this year.

“It was one of our focuses to be in the news a lot,” said ski area manager James McKenzie as he reflected on 2013.

But he got more than he had ever hoped for, with a super storm dumping 2.8 metres of snow in June, extreme winds breaking buildings and records, avalanches causing over $1 million of damage, and school children trapped on the mountain overnight.

Not all stories which hit the headlines were unplanned, such as post-earthquake star Rocky the boulder being transported to the mountain, skifield 40th anniversary celebrations, purchase of a new $650,000 groomer, and socialmedia-savvy star snowboarders undertaking a freestyle camp after winter.

As far as Mr McKenzie was concerned the unplanned events ended up being just as worthy in terms of getting people thinking about Mt Hutt, as the planned ones.

“We were going to try and find some things (other news events) along the way, they ended up coming to us,” Mr McKenzie said.

There had not really been any bad news stories, such as a high injury rate and fatalities, and in fact injury numbers were down.

Even the school children being trapped overnight and destructive avalanches had not been damaging news stories, but interesting ones.

The Mount Hutt College kids were trapped on September 4, when 240 pupils from the school went on their annual ski trip, and bad weather set in. They had to stay the night, and kept parents and friends updated on their adventure via texting and Facebook, while a video of them having fun was posted by Mt Hutt.

“The staff did a great job feeding and entertaining and making them as comfortable as they could. It’s a positive experience for the guests, quite a draining experience for the staff because they have to go back to work,” Mr McKenzie said.

criticised for keeping people up there longer than they expected, but if you look at the number of days we close versus the number of days we open, we have to manage it.”

As Mr McKenzie looks back on the tumultuous year in terms of weather, he said the ski area planned to change its avalanche “atlas” in order to avoid damage to infrastructure.

The new station of the triple chair, currently being built in Austria, would be installed at a location slightly further away from the original location, to keep it out of the path of any future avalanches.

“Nobody ever saw that coming,” he said of the huge avalanche, which not only took out the bottom station, but also irreversibly damaged a brand new $300,000 cable on

the lift, which had only just been installed.

“Because we had never seen anything like it, no-one ever imagined it would take out the triple,” Mr McKenzie said.

The avalanche was triggered while bombing was taking place, as was another avalanche which took out farm fences in the Rakaia Gorge.

A natural avalanche a couple of days earlier destroyed snowmaking facilities including a pump house and water distribution networks. A new bore will now be installed to replace the pump facilities which took water from a stream, following a resource consent process which is underway.

The “epic” 20-year storm caused about $1 million of damage. Mr McKenzie said it had been “gutting” to have

all that snow and no triple chairlift so skiers could access lower mountain terrain. But that gave rise to another good news story, in the form of Hagglund all terrain vehicles, which the ski area acquired in order to transport skiers up the lower slopes.

And the chairlift repairs would result in a better ski lift on the mountain.

Mr McKenzie said the extreme weather events, which included wind gusts reaching a record of 251.9 kilometres per hour and breaking windows, dislodging a wall and lifting a terminal roof, did not point to a new era of having to manage the mountain under climate change.

“We have probably had winds as strong as we have had, but we just haven’t been able to measure them,” he said.

This was because the wind gusts had been measured by better equipment only recently installed on the mountain.

“We have definitely had snowfalls that are that big.”

It had however been “remarkable” to have three interesting weather patterns, which not only included the winds and snow but also a long period of mild weather on the mountain.

“If anything it shows us Mt Hutt has a good future as a skifield, because it manages to retain snow,” Mr McKenzie said.

The ski area was looking forward to an exciting year next year. It had kept its season passes the same as the last three years, and was planning further improvements in addition to the bore and chairlift repairs.

ake Hood is quickly becoming one of Ashburton’s worst kept secrets.

For those looking to take the kids out and about over the break, vast grass areas along the lake’s shores provide plenty of room to throw about a frisbee or kick a football.

The canals are an ideal swimming spot, and the lake is only getting warmer.

A pontoon afloat within a short swim of the shore holds the potential for plenty of laughter in the water.

Meanwhile, basketball and tennis courts take care of the sporting nut, coupled with bike/ walk trails and horse trekking areas.

Take a closer look and homes dotted along the canals make for spectacular viewing, which can also be enjoyed from the outdoor decking area at the Lake House Restaurant and Bar. On a sweltering summer’s day, the population scattered along the lake’s edge can reach well

into the hundreds, but the relaxed atmosphere and freedom to roam makes it all worthwhile.

And it’s status is only set to swell as the lake will soon double in size and a number of stages developed that will only look to attract more punters from Canterbury and even further abroad.

Pup Chamberlain has spent the past 27 years of his 36-year career with the police in Ashburton and still loves his job.

‘It’s all about the people’ I

n his first three weeks as a police officer in Ashburton, Paul (Pup) Chamberlain had two people die in his arms.

Five people died as a result of three fatal crashes in his first three weeks; a rough introduction to the town which became his home, and remains his home.

Thirty-six years after first signing up to be a police officer, Pup is still pulling on the blue uniform and still loves his job.

His job today though is very different to the job he started at.

Pup spent 14 years as a frontline police officer before moving into the education side of policing. His first police officer role was in Southland – where he spent four of his eight years there as a country cop - and was a riot police officer during the 1981 Springboks tour of New Zealand, before moving to Ashburton in 1986.

If the old rule of compulsory retirement at the age of 55 for police officers still existed, Pup would be retiring shortly, but he’s not planning on going anywhere any time soon.

Thirty-six years ago Pup Chamberlain signed on to become a police officer. Today he’s still happily doing the job and reckons 90 per cent of what he does is positive. Erin Tasker reports. most recognisable police officers because in recent years they would have met a fair chunk of the district’s children by taking police education into schools.

“An opportunity came up for the first education position in Mid Canterbury, so I took that on. That was something I was always interested in, working with young people,” Pup said.

“I’ve got three brothers and sisters that are teachers so it’s in the blood a bit, and I saw it as a bit of an ambulance at the top of the cliff instead of the bottom.”

In 1992, the Ministry of Transport and police merged and Chris moved over from being a traffic cop, soon joining Pup due to the huge workload.

They’ve been a team ever since.

For the past 20 years, their job has been visiting schools and educating children on a variety of topics through life skills programmes like DARE and more recently the Choice programme. But the direction

Pup and Chris take in schools is changing.

Their focus is moving more towards intervention and working with schools and their communities to resolve issues surrounding the school.

Some schools had been worried about the change, and the life skills programme that had been so successful, disappearing.

“But we’re not saying we are not going to be doing that. We are just saying we are going to have a phase of finding our legs to this new approach,” Pup said.

Years five to eight is the age group Pup and Chris concentrate on. That’s when kids are on their apprenticeship to adolescence, Pup said.

“It’s not about stopping people having fun. It’s about helping them survive; there are dangers in our society and it’s about education and awareness.”

The area they cover has also

changed, to also include schools as far away as Twizel. All up they visit more than 40 schools.

Pup reckons 90 per cent of his job is positive. Given the nature of what police deal with, that’s a rare statement for a cop to make.

But Pup did his time on the frontline – and still does for three or four weeks a year when schools are on holiday – and knows now it’s not for him.

“My introduction to Ashburton was three fatals in the first three weeks and that involved two people physically dying in my arms. You never get used to things like that,” Pup said.

He has much respect for detectives who have to deal with horrible crimes and horrible people. He said he didn’t have the dedication for something like that.

He likes what he does because he can see the difference it makes.

“I like my job, I like going in to schools, I still get that feel-

ing after a good lesson of ‘that was great’,” Pup said.

“We believe in what we’re doing; this is our community too.”

The community – and the world – today, is very different from when Pup first became a police officer though.

When he first joined the police half the uniform was still black and they didn’t have portable radios. Technology has changed the job dramatically.

Now, all police have iPhones.

Technology is great, but it does have its downsides too, Pup said.

“I don’t want to lose sight of the fact that we are about people.”

For 36 years he’s been a police officer who is ‘about the people’ and earlier this month he was recognised for that service.

He received his long service bar for 35 years’ service at an awards ceremony at the Ashburton Police Station. The ceremonies are held annually but last year’s had to be cancelled so last year’s recipients were officially recognised this year.

Also receiving a medal this year was detective Leigh Jenkins for 14 years’ service.

2013 – a year of weath Twisters, disastrous wind storms, a huge snowstorm and hammering hail have made 2013 a year for the record books in Mid Canterbury.

Susan Sandys reports.

other Nature did not waste any time in getting down to business in what would be a year of wreaking havoc in Mid Canterbury for 2013.

On January 3 about 6pm a twister ripped through the Mayfield Golf Course, horrifying Alan Dixon who was mowing the rough at the time.

He did not see the twister itself, but witnessed sand being blown out of bunkers, trees uprooted and just missing the club house and pump shed, and huge branches ripped off trees and hurled high into the air.

“It looked like someone was behind them with a big leaf blower,” he said at the time.

The twister was a result of a funnel cloud that built up from a developing thunder storm which had been brewing

over Mt Peel. It lasted 10 to 20 seconds with wind gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour.

A huge snowstorm tyrannised over the high country for three days from June 20, while heavy rain and flooding hit Ashburton at the same time.

There was up to one metre of snow on farms, and 2.8 metres on Mt Hutt, the largest fall for 20 years. Methven area schools closed and roads were treacherous.

Stock on high country stations were stranded, and the Mid Canterbury Rural Trust faced a shortage of volunteers to help with snow raking. The storm had been forecast, but the sheer volume of snow saw it labelled a “crisis” by trust coordinator Allan Baird.

“They (farmers) brought stock down to what they

thought would be relatively snow safe country but the scale of this has overwhelmed them,” Mr Baird said.

Mt Hutt Helicopters dropped snow rakers and stock feed into isolated locations, and crews flew the high country, calling in on rural families to check they were okay.

The storm ultimately resulted in over $1 million of damage at Mt Hutt Ski Area, where staff were trapped for five days, and avalanches took out the bottom station of the triple chair, destroyed a snowmaking shed and buried Rakaia Gorge farm fences.

Just two weeks later Mt Hutt was struck by strong winds.

Nor’westers gusted at almost 240 kilometres per hour at the summit, and window panes and a wall were smashed.

“I feel it’s really cool to have experienced these extremes, and we get a front row seat,” said one of the ski area’s custodians, Dace Jamison, at the time.

A long period of mild weather marked the winter period, and the warm temperatures saw New Zealand record its hottest winter ever.

Winchmore took the honours for having recorded the highest national temperature for the season - 22.1 degrees on June 2.

On September 10 the district resembled a disaster zone as a huge windstorm struck Mid Canterbury.

It was considered the worst since the Great Northwesterly Storm of 1975, and saw the highest wind gust recorded for Ashburton since records began in 1970, at 128 kilometres per hour.

Mt Hutt hit a new record, of 251.9 kilometres per hour.

Volunteer fire brigade members were exhausted fighting various fires whipped up by the wind, while trees and downed power lines blocked roads.

On December 16 a hail storm shattered crops and smashed

The storm gave rise to another tornado, which formed just a few kilometres from Methven, but luckily dissipated before hitting the town.

Insurance companies still adding up the cost C anterbury “copped the brunt” of this year’s extreme weather events which have cost insurers over $150 million.

The Insurance Council of New Zealand estimated in October that the cost of storms in 2013 had reached $157 million. This included the cost of the June storm, $39.3 million, and the wind storm of September at about $68 million.

FMG advice and insurance general manager Conrad Wilkshire said the company had received 3700 event related claims this year with an estimated cost of around $22 million.

ber made up around 2300 of those claims, with an estimated cost of around $16 million.

“Claims following the recent hail storms are adding to this,” Mr Wilkshire said.

Eighty had been received so far, most of which were for damage to property such as dents in cars and smashed windows. About 17 were crop related.

“Of the destruction handed down by Mother Nature this year, people in Canterbury have certainly copped the brunt of it.”

“We’re working hard on the ground in Canterbury, with support from our service centre in Palmerston North, to help all clients get back up and running as quickly as possible.”

Fulfilling the dream

By SuSan SandyS Completing the New York City Marathon was a dream come true for Bruce and Susan Dickson of Methven.

The keen runners had been planning to undertake the race since completing the Paris Marathon in 2012, but did not think it would be possible to realise their long-term goal when Bruce sustained a leg injury about six weeks prior to the race.

The injury meant training was out of the question for the 63-year-old, and he had almost lost all hope of starting in the race, let alone finishing it.

He supported Susan, 61, from the side benches as she kept up a strict training regime leading into the trip to New York in November.

On the day of the race Bruce felt he would give it a go, and the couple travelled three hours from their accommodation near Times Square by subway, ferry and bus, to the start on Staten Island.

They were among 48,000 runners who began the marathon in perfect conditions 10 to 12 degree temperatures, overcast skies and no wind.

Bruce made a good start on the 42.2 kilometre track, but came to doubt his ability several times through the race. Through the Bronx area when he had about 12 kilometres to go, fatigue caught up and he hit his lowest point.

“But the finish line was in sight, you have done all that so you are not going to stop,” Dickson said.

Spurred on by Mrs Dickson, he picked up his stride, and the pair together increased their speed for the home stretch along Fifth Avenue. Here they passed hundreds of other racers who were beginning to flag.

“It was an amazing feeling to pass hundreds and hundreds of people in the last hour of our run,” Susan said.

With their names on their official marathon shirts, thousands in the crowd cheered them and the other runners on throughout the race. The couple completed the marathon in just over five hours.

Mrs Dickson said it had been a dream of hers to compete in the marathon since New Zealander Alison Roe won it in 1981.

The pair have recently returned from their overseas trip, which also included spending Bruce and Susan Dickson cross the New York Marathon finish line. several weeks in Canada.

Wild Oats grabs lead Six-time line honours winner Wild Oats XI snatched the lead from Perpetual LOYAL as the two supermaxis eyeballed each other in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

Looking for a record-equalling seventh victory, Oats passed Anthony Bell’s new boat yesterday afternoon as the frontrunners headed for Bass Strait. The rivals were neck and neck around 50 nautical miles southeast of Gabo Island in light northeasterly winds.

Wild Oats was managing 12 knots after running down the 10nm lead LOYAL had held overnight. Veteran Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin was taking a stranglehold on third, and New Zealand boat Giacomo (23nm back) was fourth. Giacomo led overall on handicap.

Manchester United manager David Moyes believes his side’s traditionally strong spirit means that they cannot be discounted from the Premier League title race. United battled back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Hull City yesterday and record their third consecutive league victory. After an inconsistent start to the season, in which they suffered five league defeats, United have started to close in on the upper reaches of the table. “I don’t think there was anyone in the ground, when we went 2-0 down, who thought the game was over,” Moyes said. “I think most people were rubbing their hands thinking, ‘We’re in for some game here.’ “That tells you what Manchester United have got and, hopefully, tells you something about David Moyes. Swann clears the air Newly retired offspinner Graeme Swann revealed yesterday that he has reassured Kevin Pietersen that his remark about arrogant cricketers was not a reference to his former team-mate. After his shock retirement last week, Swann spoke critically about players who, had “their heads up their own backsides”. Following suggestions in the media that he had been referring to Pietersen, Swann used Twitter to assert that he had actually been speaking about opposition players. He subsequently told BBC Radio 5 that he had contacted Pietersen personally, saying: “I’ve spoken to Kev. I assured him there was nothing in it aimed towards him. He said, ‘I know exactly who you were talking about.’”

Tourists dominate day two at the MCG

BY GREG BUCKLE Australia’s hopes of a 5-0 Ashes series sweep have taken a battering after England fought back strongly on day two of the fourth Test at the MCG yesterday.

Mitchell Johnson took 3-4 from four overs to finish with 5-63 in England’s first innings of 255 but Australia collapsed in reply, reaching 9-164 at stumps.

England’s Jimmy Anderson, ineffective with seven wickets in the first three Tests, claimed 3-50 to perfectly complement pace spearhead Stuart Broad who has 3-30.

Australia opener Chris Rogers made a gritty 61 in 224 minutes, battling on despite a nasty knock to the head after ducking into a Broad bouncer on 16.

Australia had lost the wickets of David Warner and Shane Watson before lunch.

Watson, batting with a groin strain, lunged forward and was caught behind off Ben Stokes af-

ter Warner top-edged a pull shot off Anderson.

Skipper Michael Clarke was bowled offering no shot as Anderson got one to nip back off the seam.

Steve Smith and Rogers added 48 for the fourth wicket but with the score on 110, Smith was caught at second slip off Broad’s bowling.

Rogers fell two runs later.

Smith, Watson, Rogers and George Bailey all average under 35 in the series.

Bailey’s scoreless 19-ball knock ended with a controversial caught-behind dismissal at 6-122.

Umpire Aleem Dare gave Bailey not out but TV umpire Billy Bowden overturned the decision despite replays showing no edge on HotSpot and a possible noise on the Snicko as the ball passed the bat.

Brad Haddin successfully challenged an lbw decision against him on 35.

However tailenders Johnson

and Ryan Harris, who had scored half-centuries earlier in the series, were unable to reach double figures in front of the bumper crowd of over 78,000.

Rogers said Australia would have to fight hard to get back into the game.

Yet the West Indies, on the basis of their two-wicket win which began the five-game rubber against New Zealand at Eden Park on Thursday, put a nice edge into what lies ahead, beginning tomorrow at McLean Park.

Having been drubbed in back-to-back tests, the West Indies badly needed a rousing start, and got it, courtesy of fine new ball bowling in helpful conditions, energetic fielding and bold hitting

Bravo, half brother of key batsman Darren Bravo, hints at similarly strong personal qualities. He’s spoken of the importance of camaraderie, of giving players responsibilities.

“Before the game I really stressed unity. The team has been lacking that lately, hence why we’ve been playing so poorly,” Bravo said.

“It hurts our fans when we don’t win games - not only losing games but the way we lose at times.”

Christmas Day was spent watching

the inspirational film of South Africa’s 1995 rugby World Cup victory, Invictus, bonding and exchanging fun presents.

“I give players different roles. I try to bring something different to see if that can bring the team more together. And we are going to fight every game,” Bravo said.

Bravo looks the sort to inspire his team, for whom this series is a timely shakedown ahead of the World Cup in Australasia in 14 months.

New Zealand’s key issue is fixing their batting - and the wides.

They got into a mess early at Eden Park and, with the West Indies bowling demanding and fielding enthusiastic, couldn’t find an escape route.

The bowlers delivered 14 wides in just 27.3 overs, which is simply unacceptable.

McLean Park is invariably full of runs. The boundaries are short square, therefore favouring batsmen who cut, pull and sweep adroitly, and it takes a long blow to clear the rope down the ground.

“We’ve got to make sure we improve on our performance,” captain Brendon McCullum said. “We know their guys will take confidence out of that, even though they were not at their best.”

Anderson sparks England fightback

The paceman is one of several English senior players who have endured wretched summers so far in Australia.

He had only taken seven wickets in the first three Tests.

Then his long-time friend

Graeme Swann stunned the sport before the Boxing Day Test by announcing his immediate retirement from international cricket.

Yesterday, Anderson responded in the best possible way - with wickets.

He took 3-50 as Australia had their worst day of this Ashes series and slumped to 9-164, a first-innings deficit of 91.

Anderson’s only blemish came when he dropped an easy catch

off Mitchell Johnson. But he made up for it by taking a catch to dismiss the same batsman for two.

Anderson claimed the first wicket of the innings, with dangerous opener David Warner caught behind for nine.

Then he produced a great delivery that Australian captain Michael Clarke misjudged completely.

Clarke shouldered arms and

was bowled for 10, leaving Australia 3-62.

It left Australia in a hole and they are yet to re-emerge.

A controversial DRS ruling gave Anderson his third wicket, with George Bailey slashing outside off stump and being judged out caught behind for a duck.

It wasn’t quite as menacing as Mitchell Johnson’s 5-63, but it was just what England needed.

Strike weapon nears record

Mitchell McClenaghan is within reach of a remarkable world ODI record - provided he has a cracking next three matches against the West Indies.

The powerfully built lefthander’s best ODI haul, five for 58 at Eden Park on Thursday night, didn’t carry New Zealand to a win - the West Indies got home by two wickets - but his return maintained a fabulous one-day record since his debut against South Africa in Paarl last January.

McClenaghan has taken 40 wickets in 15 matches, at a 19.02 average.

If he can nab 10 more wickets at Napier tomorrow, Queenstown on New Year’s Day and Nelson in its ODI debut on January 4, McClenaghan will have become the fastest bowler to 50 ODI wickets.

Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis holds the mark at 19 games.

In his 18th game, McClenaghan would easily beat Shane Bond, who took 27 games.

The Auckland quick has a specific role in the bowling group.

While others need to take care with the runs they’re conceding, McClenaghan’s brief is distinctly different.

Put simply, it’s get wickets and

- within reason - hang the runs.

“Brendon [captain McCullum] gives me the same role no matter what we’re chasing,” McClenaghan said.

“He winds me up and lets loose, don’t worry how many runs you go for, just take poles [wickets].

The mentality is the same for me every game.”

McCullum and McClenaghan both know it’s a risk and reward game.

While other bowlers restrict the opposition batsmen, McClenaghan is given licence to attack.

It’s a strategy that can cost runs, but a glance at his record suggests it has been well worth it.

McClenaghan, at 27 a relative late bloomer in the national team, has taken four wickets in an ODI innings four times.

On each occasion he dismissed at least one opener cheaply South Africa’s Graeme Smith, England’s Alastair Cook, Sri Lankan blaster Tillekaratne Dilshan, Australian Shane Watson and, on Thursday, he ripped out four West Indians in the space of 27 balls.

“Mitch was outstanding,” McCullum said of Thursday night’s effort, in which McClenaghan had the ball hooping around impressively, an effort only marred by Darren Sammy clouting 10 in his final two deliveries to seal the West Indies win.

“When he first came into the team the message was very strong - and also from his captain when he’s bowling - that he’s a

point of difference for us. He’s an aggressive, hostile bowler,” McCullum said.

McClenaghan reckons the only other time the ball was coming out as sweetly as Thursday night was on debut in Paarl, when he took four for 20 in 10 overs to help set up a one-wicket win.

He’s thriving on the support from above.

“The confidence Brendon gives me, and knowing how much he and [coach] Mike Hesson back me, just means I can go out and play without fear.

“It makes the game so much easier when the only pressure is from yourself.”

McClenaghan’s philosophy on run concession is straightforward.

“I come hard and the only way to fight fire is with fire. The batsmen are going to come hard at me to try and put me off my game.

“It doesn’t really bother me too much as long as I keep taking wickets. If I stop taking them that’s when I have to look at myself.”

McClenaghan isn’t a sure thing for the World Cup, which is just over a year away, but he’s doing his level best to lock his name in.

“A lot of things can happen between now and then.

“The best thing is in all forms of the game we’ve got a very competitive bowling unit. That means as a bowler you can’t go out and have an off game.

“You can’t take anything for granted.”

Gold star within her grasp

With four national titles to her name, Ashburton lawn bowls star Sandra Keith needs just one more to join an illustrious club of bowlers.

Keith heads into the National Open Bowls Championships in Dunedin starting today with a gold star in her sights, a prize given only to those who have had their name etched on five open national titles.

“That’s the goal, it would be nice to come down here and add just one to those titles, but to be honest I will just be happy to get through qualifying initially,” Keith said.

In January this year at the last national open in New Plymouth,

the women’s lawn bowls world champion claimed the national pairs title with partner Serena Matthews and runner-up in the fours with Matthews, Pam Clarke and Karolyn Boon.

However, that was marred by an underwhelming performance in the singles, where she eventually missed out on post section competition.

Along with her singles national title in early 2012, and New Zealand Pathways championships in pairs and triples – it takes her national title tally to four, just one away from the coveted gold star club.

Keith will be looking to defend her pairs title with Matthews starting tomorrow, while joining forces with the same

fours team, hoping to go one better than last year.

She remains positive that recent training with the Black Jacks will have her better prepared for another singles national title bid, beginning today.

“It’s pretty hard core to get to any of the finals, I just want to get through qualifying.

“That’s the hardest part of the event, it’s a relief once you get into the final rounds and that will be the goal for all events.

“I have been full on with the Black Jacks stuff, I’ve been training and putting in a few nights during the week and in the weekend.

“I feel it’s been going well and it’ll be nice to actually get in a match this weekend.”

Although she is striving to have another national title in her grasp, the tournament will also be under the watchful eye of Commonwealth Games selectors who are expected to name their squad for Glasgow shortly after the national open.

“I’m sure this performance will come into it, and I’m definitely in the mix, so it’s just a matter of showing them what they want to see.

“I feel I have done enough but ultimately it’s up to them.”

Keith starts singles qualifying today, with pairs scheduled for tomorrow and Monday, before reaching the final stages during the week.

Fours qualifying will begin on Sunday January 5.

Williams taking it ‘round by round’

The seven time Grand Slam singles winner was met by ASB staff at Auckland Airport, before

being surrounded by waiting media. She was among several players who landed yesterday ahead of the ASB Classic tournament which starts next week. It was a low-key arrival for the US star, a small media pack the only sign she was due through the doors.

Dressed casually in black leggings and a white tank top, Williams, 33, revealed she had big

hopes for the Auckland competition and the year ahead.

Asked what she hoped to achieve, she said: “Well the other day I dreamed I had a win, and then I woke up and I realised I hadn’t even played a round. So it was like, ‘oh man’,” she added, laughing. “I hope to go round by round and at least get to the finals.

That’d be awesome.”

Icebound ship close to rescue

A Gold Coast adventurer taking a pink “boob-sled” across Antarctica has made it to the South Pole.

Dr Geoff Wilson reached the milestone yesterday, leaving him with 1100km to go in his quest to become the first Aussie and third person - to cross the southern continent solo. But he reckons the worst of the journey is over. “Now I’ve got the shorter run to the coast, which is the traditional entry route for most polar travellers,” he said. He wants to beat the Australian record for the longest trek across the icy continent. However, his main goal is to take the “boob-sled” 3300km from one side of Antarctica to the other - and raise $1 million for breast cancer charity the McGrath Foundation.

Corby’s time cut

A ship that has been trapped in thick Antarctic ice since Christmas Eve was nearing rescue last night, after a Chinese icebreaker named the Snow Dragon drew close to the icebound vessel.

The Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy, which has been on a research expedition to Antarctica, got stuck Tuesday after a blizzard’s whipping winds pushed the sea ice around the ship, freezing it in place.

The ship wasn’t in danger of sinking, and there were ample supplies for the 74 scientists, tourists and crew on board, but the vessel couldn’t move.

Maritime authorities received the ship’s distress signal on Wednesday and sent three icebreakers to assist. By yesterday afternoon, China’s Snow Dragon had made it as far as the edge of the sea ice surrounding the ship, 20 kms away, but still faced the tough task of getting through the dense pack ice to the paralysed vessel.

The Snow Dragon was hoping to reach the ship by last night, but changing weather conditions and the thickness of the ice could slow its progress, said Andrea Hayward-Maher, spokeswoman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority,

which is coordinating the rescue.

Expedition leader Chris Turney said it may take the Snow Dragon another day to break through.

“We’re all just on tenterhooks at the moment, waiting to find out” how long it will take, Turney said by satellite phone.

“Morale is really good.”

The scientific team on board the vessel — which left New Zealand on November 28 — had been recreating Australian explorer Douglas Mawson’s century-old voyage to Antarctica when it became trapped.

They plan to continue their

expedition after they are freed, Turney said.

Passengers and crew have had to contend with blizzard conditions, including winds up to 70 kms per hour, but the weather had calmed considerably, Turney said.

“The blizzard we had yesterday was quite extraordinary — it’s not nice when you can feel the ship shaking,” he said.

Despite the interruption to the expedition, the scientists have continued their research while stuck, counting birds in the area and drilling through the ice surrounding the ship to photograph sea life.

UN deploys troops World’s hottest peppers African leaders are due to discuss a spiralling crisis in South Sudan as the UN speeds up the deployment of extra troops in a bid to stem the violence sweeping across the world’s youngest nation.

A day after the leaders of Kenya and Ethiopia claimed “good progress” in peace talks held in Juba, east African leaders are due to meet in Nairobi to further efforts to end the raging ethnic violence.

As the international community scrambles to halt the country’s slide into civil war the United Nations announced extra troops and “critical assets” like helicopters would be on the ground by today.

“We are working on 48 hours delivery of several of

the critical assets that we need,” the world body’s special envoy to the violence-wracked country, Hilde Johnson said.

She stressed that the growing violence needed to be met with “unprecedented speed.”

Tensions in the country, which won independence from Sudan only two years ago, erupted into violent conflict on December 15 amid a vicious fight between troops loyal to South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and fighters backing his sacked vice president, Riek Machar. 29 die on Thai bus At least 29 people have been killed and four badly injured when a bus plunged into a deep ravine in northeast Thailand, police say.

The accident occurred around midnight in Lom Sak district, Phetchabun province while the bus was en route to the northern province of Chiang Rai. “We suspect the bus driver fell asleep,” Major General Sukit Samana, police commander of Phetchabun province, said. “We found 28 bodies in the ravine, which is about 30 metres deep. And one died at the hospital,” he said. Four others were in a critical condition. Deadly road accidents are common in Thailand. A recent report by the World Health Organisation said the country saw had 38.1 road deaths per 100,000 of population, compared to an average of 18.5 in Southeast Asia as a whole.

Weather a hot topic Erin Tasker

f there was a most frequently asked question of 2013 in Mid Canterbury, “how about that weather?” would have to be right up there.

Weather is often the go-to topic when you can’t think of anything else to say, but this year it has actually been a hot topic.

It’s been a year of extremes.

Snow, rain, wind, tornados, sun, hail … we’ve had it all.

All up, insurers reckon the weather cost Mid Canterbury upwards of $150 million this year in damage done.

That’s one expensive year thanks to Mother Nature.

It began with a tornado which ripped through the Mayfield Golf Course just days into 2013, while most recently it’s been hail which has been proving a headache for the district’s farmers.

Hail ripped through crops which had been looking good ahead of the summer harvest, while panel beaters and windscreen repairers were kept busy repairing cars that were left battered and shattered thanks to the marble-sized hail stones.

Just a couple of months ago it was the wind causing problems.

Long-time Mid Canterbury residents struggled to remember winds like we had this spring.

Trees around the district were toppled and power went out as the district received a fair battering.

There was winter snow to contend with too. Mt Hutt experienced record snowfall which attracted big numbers up to the ski area, and while the plains didn’t receive too much of the troublesome white fluffy stuff, rain and flooding were causing problems on the flat ground.

We might be having a reprieve from damaging weather at the moment, but the weather woes are continuing.

It’s hard to get into holiday mode when it’s miserable outside.

It’s summer, but you wouldn’t know it. Looking at the weather forecast for the next few days, we’ll be lucky to see much of the sun.

Not good news for those of us on holiday and wanting to have some holiday fun.

We’ve certainly had it all in 2013.

Surely that’s our fair share of extremes and 2014 will be more settled?

T

here is nothing like a family gathering to remind you of who you are and where you come from.

If Christmas dinner with the second cousins didn’t do the trick this year, there is always an interactive portraiture exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery that can help you to see yourself in a new light.

Classic portraits by Rita Angus and Frances Hodgkins sit alongside photographs of All Blacks’ supporters, while easels around the gallery encourage visitors to try their own hand at the artform.

I took my visiting family to check it out, and while drawing your nearest and dearest may not be the best course of action if you are aiming to preserve civil relationships, we gave it a go and ended up seeing a new side of each other.

Mum’s favourite artwork was a sculpture of a man and his dog. This may or may not have been a symptom of canine withdrawal, as she left her own pup in Auckland this Christmas and has had to make do with skype calls home rather than having a dog on the end of her bed.

Dad preferred Nigel Brown’s lemon tree, while the rest of my cohort made a beeline for the easels. The exhibition offered my man a moment away from the in-laws to try his hand at self-portraiture.

Having not sketched since third form art class, the results were impressive. He was not quite game enough to try sketching me or mum however, and decided it was safest to try the light box for drawing silhouettes. Sister two’s hat looked very stylish in profile, and there was less chance of offending her by drawing a wonky nose or forgetting to add eyebrows. (Dad’s abstract version of mum did not go

down so well, largely as a result of this omission).

The artworks on display would not look out of place in a city gallery, but the best thing about the exhibition was the range of questions that accompanied the portraits, encouraging the audience to think about what their own version might look like.

I never thought I would be answering questions such as ‘What am I wearing’ with ‘gumboots,’ so living in Mid Canterbury has definitely changed the version of me that would be seen in a portrait.

These days I would be with my dog, in my library, with the mountains visible in the back-

ground through the window, and there would be a bunch of home grown flowers on the side table, just for good measure.

In Auckland I would have chosen a beach setting, with my family in the painting. Gumboots would definitely have been out, and the only thing in a vase would have been a sprig of the impossibly hardy rosemary from under the front steps.

Moving south means I have swapped beaches for a beetroot patch and mum and dad for a mutt, but I am proud to show my family this new South Island version of their daughter, in full portrait.

Road works a sign of better things to come W

hy is it that we get so upset when we see a sign for road construction? We should be happy, because in the not too distant future, the road works will be complete, and our travels will be even safer and more time efficient than ever before.

Right? But still, we see that sign, or we see the infamous orange cones, and we get upset.

“Not Road Construction again!

Didn’t they just finish working on this road?” We get impatient when we see road construction signs, because they speak to us more of inconvenience, hassles, and delays, rather than the benefits that are hidden in the

A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth.

Maybe, just maybe, we’ll get

to enjoy the holiday season this year. But instead we are faced with a sign of work in progress: Road Construction.

Proceed with Caution.

In this Advent season, we are on a journey on the road of life.

We journey toward Bethlehem to witness the miracle of Jesus’ birth. But we also journey towards the end of all time, when Christ Jesus will come among us again, to take us to our eternal home to spend eternity with the God who loves us with a love that will not let us go.

As we prepare for Our Lord’s coming, we are invited to open our hearts and our lives to the healing construction of our

Risen Lord and Saviour. Let Christ put up the “Road Construction” signs, and wait as the salvation of our God will be revealed.

We do not walk alone in this journey of life. Our Lord walks with us, to support and encourage us, and to change the topography of our hearts, as we seek to be more and more conformed to the likeness of Christ Jesus our Lord.

Praise be to God that we have a Saviour who walks with us, supporting and keeping us in the midst of all our construction phases, so that at the Day of our Lord’s return, we can truly rejoice as we, with all

flesh, witness the coming of the salvation of our God. “And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9-11) In Christ Jesus our Lord. Kiwi weakens as greenback buoyed

BY TINA MORRISON The New Zealand dollar weakened as the greenback is supported by an improving outlook for the US economy.

The kiwi slipped to 81.52 US cents at 8am from 81.62 cents at 5pm on Thursday.

The yield on US 10-year Treasuries is edging higher, to reach around 3 per cent, near the two-year peak of 3.007 per cent hit in September.

US bond yields are rising as an improving economy prompts the Federal Reserve to pull back on its US$85 billion a month bond-buying programme next

year, making dollar bonds more attractive for investors.

“The kiwi is drifting a little bit lower as we have a US dollar that continues to strengthen,” said Stuart Ive, senior advisor at OMF. “It’s a reflection of the US economy strengthening. It adds to that picture that the US is on the path for future tapering.”

Helping buoy sentiment about the US labour market, a report showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in nearly a month.

tralian dollars weakened on concern about the stability of the financial system in China, a major trading partner for the two nations, Ive said.

The People’s Bank of China on Tuesday injected 29 billion yuan into the nation’s financial system on concern rising yields for interbank lending could cause a credit crunch.

The kiwi edged lower to 91.73 Australian cents from 91.77 cents on Thursday.

Most financial centres in Europe and the Americas were closed for Christmas on Wednesday with many also shut yesterday for Boxing Day.

Markets are “very, very subdued”, Ive said. “There’s not going to be a great deal going on.”

The kiwi is likely to trade in a narrow range of 81.20 US cents to 81.85 cents, he said. The local currency is edging below its 200-day moving average of 81.61 cents and is likely to continue to weaken should it close below that level today, he said.

The New Zealand dollar slipped to 85.37 yen from 85.47 yen yesterday after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the controversial Yasukuni Shrine war memorial, straining relations with China and hurting investors’ risk appetite.

In Japan, reports are scheduled today on manufacturing, household spending, inflation, unemployment, preliminary industrial production, retail sales and average cash earnings.

The kiwi weakened to 59.53 euro cents from 59.68 cents yesterday and dropped to 49.65 British pence from 49.80 pence.

The pound strengthened after a report said a rising population, a low-tax regime and insulation for the worst of the eurozone’s problems mean Britain is on course to overtake Germany as Europe’s biggest economy within the next two decades.

Kiwi video game makers receive international praise

McDonald’s closes employee website amid criticism

Five New Zealand video game makers have been lauded in major international Best of 2013 lists.

Path of Exile by West Auckland-based Grinding Gear Games has won GameSpot’s PC Game of the Year Award while Turbo Racing League by Wellington-based PikPok was the runner-up for Apple’s Best of 2013 Game of the Year.

Indie developer Michael Brough was named one of the Top 10 Game Developers of 2013 by Gamasutra.

The Blockheads by Majic Jungle and Bloons Tower Defence 5 by NinjaKiwi also feature in Apple’s Best of 2013.

New Zealand Game Developers Association chairperson, Stephen Knightly said it has been a break-out year for the country’s gaming industry.

“Many New Zealand made games have won rave reviews and awards during the year, but to be singled out in retrospectives from the world’s leading gaming press and publishers is outstanding.

“It shows that the quality of New Zealand developers’ games count among the best in the world,” Knightly said.

In the last financial year, revenue from New Zealand made video games grew 86 per cent with the vast majority being

McDonald’s Corp. has shut down a website intended to provide employees with work and life guidance after it generated negative publicity for the fastfood company.

The McResource program has been criticised for creating unrealistic budgets and offering advice that was out of touch with its workers’ pay.

The website, which was run by an outside company, also reportedly discouraged workers from eating fast food.

McDonald’s, based in Oak Brook, Illinois, said it is having its vendor take down the website.

“Between links to irrelevant or outdated information, along with outside groups taking elements out of context, this created unwarranted scrutiny and inappropriate commentary,” the company said in a statement.

Earlier this year, media and labour groups criticised the website for content including sample budgets for employees that were based on holding two jobs and included no costs for heating, as well as suggestions on what to tip a personal fitness trainer or au pair.

On December 27, 1822, the man who developed pasteurization was born in France. His name was Louis Pasteur, and that process of preserving food was only one of his major achievements. He spent his life working toward the improvement of people’s lives.

Pasteur worked for changes in hospital practices in order to cut down on the spread of disease, and he discovered how rabies were being transmitted. Because of this, Pasteur developed techniques to vaccinate dogs against rabies and to treat people who had been bitten by dogs with rabies.

The Pasteur Institute was founded in the late 1880s as a clinic for rabies treatment, a research center for infectious disease and a teaching center.

Texas occupies almost 7.5 percent of the nation’s total land area. It’s as large as New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois combined. And it measures 773 miles from east to west and 801 miles from north to south.
