Whooping cough alert BY TONI WILLIAMS

TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Confirmed cases of whooping cough (pertussis) in Ashburton have prompted a warning to parents to look out for symptoms and ensure immunisations are up to date. In the week before Christmas there was one reported case of pertussis in Ashburton. Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said the number of cases in Canterbury was falling, but he warned people to be aware of the symptoms and seek medical advice. Whooping cough is a highly infectious bacterial disease that starts with cold-like symptoms that progress to a severe cough. The cough is accompanied by breathlessness, a flushed face. Sometimes a whoop is heard as the person breathes in after coughing. Symptoms can also include fever and sneezing. Dr Humphrey said the disease could affect people of any age but was more serious in children under two years old. It can last up to three months. Although only one case had been confirmed, he said it was

entirely possible there were more cases. Anyone with a cough persisting for a week should see their doctor. And if after two weeks it had not cleared up they should go back, as whooping cough required a special antibiotic treatment which was not effective after three weeks. Dr Humphrey said infants were especially at risk of breathing difficulties and pneumonia, which could lead to hospitalisation. He recommended parents kept young children away from people with symptoms. People with whooping cough can remain infectious for three weeks. Free vaccinations are available for children, and during past epidemics it saved lives, Dr Humphrey said. Babies are immunised at six weeks, three months and five months. Boosters are given at four and 11 years. Dr Humphrey also recommended pregnant women get vaccinated to protect their unborn child, and grandparents should also consider getting immunised.
