An 11-year-old child is the youngest alcohol-affected person an Ashburton security patroller says he has found on Ashburton streets.

A video of a Hamilton nine-yearold found drunk in a skatepark was played on YouTube, attracting thousands of hits and creating a wave of concern across the country.

The child claimed to have been supplied with alcohol by his aunt, but Hamilton police are still investigating the source of supply.

While the Ashburton incident occurred two years ago and the child had not been on the patroller’s radar again, Dean Talbot said Ashburton people were kidding themselves if they believed young kids were not consuming alcohol.

The most significant underage issue in the district he sees is 13- to 17-year-olds.

with patrolling, they asked them to tip their alcohol out. If they refused, the police became involved, Mr Talbot said.

Over the past six months, the problem youth culture appeared to have lessened, but there was a group of 14- and 15-year-olds that was always on his team’s radar, he said.

While the Ashburton skatepark had had problems with alcohol and fights in the past, this had quietened down, with behaviour now appearing to be self-policed by users.

Although Safer Ashburton worked with a large cross-section of the community, manager Kevin Clifford said he was not aware of any incidents of extreme youth drinking – but that didn’t mean it wasn’t happening, he said “Certainly we do have kids under 18 in town who are having alcohol. It happens and we’re always alert to it and keep an eye on it.”

Wrong crop Four men caught raiding a strawberry crop on New Zealand’s South Island may never eat the fruit again after gorging themselves on a recently-sprayed patch.

Blenheim police say the owner of a Marlborough commercial strawberry patch reported disturbing four males “as they were gorging themselves”.

They fled before police arrived.

“The owner advised the police that the strawberries had recently been sprayed with a fungicide and pesticide which is likely to make the strawberry eaters a bit ill,” Constable Andrew Holdaway said.

Giraffe on menu Ancient Romans dined on giraffes, pink flamingos and exotic spices from as far away as Indonesia, according to a new scientific study of excavations in Pompeii.

The study of food waste dug up by researchers from the University of Cincinnati in the US led by archaeologist Steven Ellis found that menus in the city were far richer and more varied than previously thought. The most used foods found in drains and dumps were grains, fruits, nuts, olives, lentils, local fish and eggs but there was also more exotic fare like salted fish from Spain, or imported shellfish and sea urchins. A joint of giraffe was found in the drain of one home. “This is thought to be the only giraffe ever recorded from an archaeological excavation in Roman Italy,” Ellis said. – AFP

Police in Germany have seized a large haul of cocaine after smugglers apparently sent it to supermarkets by mistake. Workers at five stores in and around Berlin were surprised to find cocaine packed into crates of bananas – a total of 140kg. Berlin’s antidrugs squad said the crates had come from Colombia via the German port of Hamburg and the discovery was “pure chance”.

A prehistoric fish that inhabits the waters off southern Australia and New Zealand evolves even slower than the coelacanth, a famous “living fossil” whose DNA has barely changed over hundreds of millions of years, scientists say. The genome of the elephant shark “is evolving significantly slower than other vertebrates, including the coelacanth”, they reported in the journal Nature yesterday. Despite its name, the creature is not a shark. Strictly speaking, it is a chimaera, a small group of fish that diverged from sharks, rays and skates, called elasmobranchs, around 420 million years ago.

Maori gifts for tennis aces Bone carvings made by a Whangarei artist have been chosen as gifts for tennis superstars Venus Williams and David Ferrer. Len Kay was one of several artists invited by the Maori Sports Awards trust to submit designs for taonga to be given to the two tennis players who are in Auckland for the ASB Auckland Tennis Classic and Heineken Open tournaments. The idea behind the gesture was to recognise the players’ profile and celebrate the coming together of different ethnicities in the Auckland event which is gaining an international reputation. Mr Kay carved the neck pendants out of stubs of bone from the base of deer antler.

Ms Williams’ is a double piece with two manaia pendants, representing herself and her famous sister Serena. In Maori mythology the manaia is a symbol that guards against evil.

Mr Ferrer’s carving is a single piece with a similar but double-headed figure.

Big dairy payouts may be over

Dairy farmers in the Ashburton District have been warned that the days of the big dairy payout may not last.

ANZ agri-economist Con Williams believes the tipping point with high prices will show in the 2014 and 2015 season as the impact of a very strong northern hemisphere season begins to flow through to the

international market.

“I’d expect we’ll be seeing some correction in prices; the question is how much it will adjust back down. This time last year farmers were looking at $5.85; this year it’s $8.30 and it’s very dangerous to be doing your budgets at $8.30,” Mr Williams said.

“There is volatility in dairy markets and we must expect some correction in prices.”

And that’s backed up by Mid

Canterbury Federated Farmers dairy spokesman Hamish Davidson.

Building your business, buying land or expanding your herd on the expectation of a big payout is a fast track to disaster, he said.

“You certainly shouldn’t go out and buy a farm based on $8; do your budgets on around $6.”

He believes the “cowboy” dairy farmers who spent up large several years ago have now

fallen out of the system on the back of a couple of tough years in 2007 and 2008.

The volatility in dairy prices was clearly demonstrated in the first GlobalDairyTrade auction of the year where prices were slightly down after two consecutive gains.

The average winning price was down to NZ$5964 a tonne from NZ$6048 a tonne.

Prices, however, are still 50 per cent higher than they were

Summer snow drew plenty of sightseers to Mt Hutt Ski Area yesterday.

Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said snow in January wasn’t rare, but what was unusual about the snowfall on the mountain on Wednesday night was the amount.

He said about 10cm fell at the

The warm summer temperatures mean that view isn’t likely to last for long though, so people were making the most of it.

Among the many visitors up the mountain yesterday were a swag of keas “making a nui-

sance of themselves”.

“The keas have definitely come out with the snow. We haven’t seen them for ages,” he said.

Mr McKenzie said he didn’t know why the keas had suddenly reappeared, but one theory was that they knew when snow fell, people would come, and people would likely drop scraps of food that they could scavenge on.

Councillor takes aim at sports stadium A Christchurch city councillor is trying to torpedo the new $253 million sports stadium.

Councillor Glenn Livingstone said the 35,000 seat stadium earmarked by the Government to be built in the central city by 2017 “has to go” after an interim financial review of the city council.

Insolvency and financial experts Korda Mentha said last month the city council has significant financial problems including having to pay their $1.9b of the cost sharing agreement even if they don’t get their insurance monies.

“There is no way we can afford it any more - the stadium has to go,” said Cr Livingstone.

“As part of the overall picture of our financial health it would be less than responsible that we do this post disaster,” he said.

Under the cost sharing agreement the city council has to provide up to $253m for the stadium. “I am a huge rugby fan but we’ve won everything on the planet [in rugby] there is nothing left to win. Canterbury is our stadium, the natural environment that is our asset and our stadium.”

But Crusaders’ chairman Murray Ellis said without the 35,000 seat stadium it would be difficult to keep the franchise in the city.

“We are pretty privileged to have the Crusaders here and we wouldn’t want to risk that - they are not here by any local right.

“A new stadium is needed and important to the city not only for the sport but the whole experience - from hospitality to the commercial opportunities.”

In brief Consents dip For the 12 months to November 30 219 consents were issued for new homes to be built in the Ashburton District. Statistics New Zealand’s monthly dwelling consent tables show that while the number of consents over the past 12 months was high, November saw a dip in numbers issued from 18 in 2012 to 14 in November 2013. July, August and September were the strongest months for consents in the district, at 25 per month, with October the slowest month on 13. While Ashburton may have had a drop in new home consent numbers in November, Christchurch city watched numbers come close to doubling, up from 141 in 2012 to 269 in November 2013. November numbers dropped in Sewlyn from 102 to 95 but rose in Waimakariri from 112 to 136. Across New Zealand 2267 consents for new home builds were issued in November up from 1658 in the previous year.

Young drunk taken down

By Matthew Backhouse A video of a Hamilton boy apparently drunk at a skate park on his ninth birthday has been removed from YouTube - but not before more than half a million people watched the uncensored footage.

Police yesterday asked Google to remove the clip from YouTube after the man who shot and uploaded the footage, 18-year-old scooter rider Bradley Goudie, refused to take it down.

The video showed a 9-yearold child so drunk on Cody’s RTD bourbon drinks that he appeared barely able to stand.

Police said they were “appalled” at the incident, and even more concerned to see the footage posted on social media.

Mr Goudie said the video was removed by You Tube last night, with a notice saying the content was inappropriate. The video had attracted 576,243 views before it was taken down.

copied and shared elsewhere which was why Mr Goudie saw no point in removing the footage, as police had requested.

One copy, on a popular hip hop video site, had attracted more than 800,000 views.

“Police did say they wanted it removed, I guess it’s up to them. [But] them taking down my version of the video is not going to do anything - the

video is already out there,” Mr Goudie said.

The frequent skate park user had planned to donate any ad revenue from the video to Youth Service, but he could not do so now it had been removed.

Mr Goudie said he intended to upload the video again - this time with the boy’s face blurred so he could not be identified.

He shot the video at the Fairfield skate park in Hamilton on Tuesday afternoon and called police to report the incident after leaving the park, but said he never heard back.

“So I decided to upload the footage to show that this is what happened; it was serious.”

Mr Goudie posted the clip to highlight the issue, he said.

He had seen children as young as 12 getting drunk all the time and he was outraged by it. “It was not my intention to put anyone in the spotlight it was my intention to make the community see what has been happening.”

ls yesterday said he was grateful the man who shot the video had got in touch. But he said it would have been in the boy’s best interests if Mr Goudie had provided the footage to police or Child Youth and Family (CYF) “rather than further victimise the child by publishing the footage”.

Police were considering charges under the new liquor supply laws, and CYF was urgently investigating.

Both the boy’s mother, who has custody of the child, and his father, who is separated from the mother, said they were horrified he was given alcohol.

The boy’s father initially said he did not want the video taken down because he wanted action to be taken.

But late yesterday he echoed police’s call for the video to be removed from YouTube. He said it had “gone too big” and he was really hurt by some of the comments on the video.

“I don’t want my son going through that, you know.”

A plane crash at Tauranga Airport will be investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority. Emergency services were called to the airport at 2.45pm yesterday to reports of a plane that crashed as it tried to land, a Northern Fire Communications spokesman said.

The small plane crashed on Runway 25, on the west side of the airport’s main runway. Tauranga and Mount Maunganui firefighters were called to the scene but were stood down before they arrived, the spokesman said. It is understood the sole occupant of the plane was not badly hurt, although an ambulance was called.

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) spokeswoman Melanie Bruges said the incident had been reported to the authority and it would be reviewing information to be provided by the pilot over the next few days.

Dog almost skinned A Tauranga woman is calling for dog owners to take better control of their pets after her Pomeranian was attacked and almost “skinned alive” while she was walking him near Lake Rerewhakaaitu. Karen Peters was walking Charlie near the Rerewhakaaitu lakefront, south of Rotorua, last Thursday when he was “brutally” attacked by a larger dog. The animal, which was on a leash that was held by a child, had approached 8-year-old Charlie and suddenly started attacking him, overpowering the child, Mrs Peters said.

Rotorua brawl The Rotorua city centre came to a standstill as a minor dispute escalated into a fight involving up to 20 young people. Police said six young people aged from 16 to 19 were taken into custody with most facing fighting or disorderly charges. A business owner, who did not want to be named, said the incident originally started between two young people arguing near the City Focus on the Pukuatua St side. “They started swearing at each other and then some girls started to get involved. At the end of it there were six to eight kids brawling and then another group started up under the City Focus.”

Hot spots make monthly record list

The Ashburton District made weather news for good and bad reasons in December.

On December 6 it was one of the hottest early morning spots in New Zealand when temperatures soared to 26 degrees at 10am.

The district’s high was part of a string of hot spots around

New Zealand over the first week in December, with Clyde clinching the record at 34.2 degrees.

The record low for the month was on December 1 in Middlemarch, -1.2 degrees.

December 16 will be remembered as the day of a massive hail storm and a tornado near Mayfield. Hailstones of up to 3cm in diameter were reported, destroying crops and stripping trees of their foliage.

Windows were broken in many Mayfield homes and one farmer reported losing $100,000 worth of crop.

The Ashburton District also stood out in December for having a wind gust on December 18 that equalled its fourth highest recording, 91 km/h.

In its monthly weather wrap NIWA described December as a month with higher than normal temperatures, more sunshine

and less rain than average. Canterbury’s east coast, however was one of the areas where the rainfall was above average for the month and that meant soil moisture levels were close to normal.

The highest one day rainfall was at North Egmont, 175mm on December 4 and the highest wind gust, 152 km/h at Cape Turnagain on December 21.

Wellington was the sunniest

main centre in New Zealand, Auckland the warmest, Dunedin the coolest and cloudiest and Tauranga the wettest.

Christchurch had above average temperatures and rainfall that was well above the norm.

NIWA predicts that the January to March period in Coastal Canterbury is likely to see temperatures that are at or above average, with rainfall and soil moisture at average levels.

Back to basics

Thirteen-year-old Mighty Hesketh spent a week of his school holidays back in the classroom, learning to make furniture at the Methven Summer School.

Under the careful guidance of master craftsman Richard Hare, Mighty and his fellow students went back to basics learning to craft a tree the old way, using only hand tools and a freshly felled tree.

Creating by hand takes time and the students will be work for seven days to end their class when the 27th summer school wraps up on Sunday, with a completed chair.

Police station demo to begin Demolition on the earthquakedamaged Lyttelton police station, New Zealand’s oldest, will start on Monday.

The Italianate-style building was built between 1880-1882 using Lyttelton prison labour, and was the oldest and longest continually used police station in New Zealand.

Extensive damage in the February 2011 quake meant that the building was deemed unsafe to occupy, and repairing it would be uneconomical. It would cost $350,000 more to repair the building than a complete rebuild.

The cell block at the rear of the station dates back to the 1920s, and will remain untouched on site until it finds a new home.

Several items with historic significance will be salvaged, including the archways, etched glass panels, wooden staircase and balustrade, and these may be used in future police stations.

While some parts will be kept, the loss of the building is close to the heart for those involved.

The station’s senior officer, Sergeant Gary Manch said: “It is such a beautiful station.”

Christchurch art teacher and model maker Richard Gardiner donated a miniature replica of the building to the police.

Discussions are continuing on the replacement of the building, including the possibility of a shared facility with other emergency services at another location in Lyttelton.

In the meantime, business will continue as usual from the temporary Portacoms next to the old building’s site.

Mid Cantabrians looking to take a dip at popular swimming spots on the Ashburton River waterways, beware.

There are only two good areas close to town, and both are at Lake Hood.

About an hour out of town, Lake Camp and Lake Clearwater have also been given the all clear.

Environment Canterbury (Ecan) tests of E.Coli levels, carried out along the Ashburton River up until end of December, showed recreational water in the district was of very poor quality - Lake Hood (mostly fed off Carters Creek) was the exception.

Ecan water quality analyst Graeme Clarke said readings were done at popular swimming spots in joint discussions with the district council and community public health.

Popular public swimming spots included were Ashburton River at State Highway One, two sites at Lake Hood, Lake Camp and Lake Clearwater.

The level of E.coli in the water gave an indication of the risk of pathogens and bacteria.

Mr Clarke said the bacteria correlated strongly to campylobacter and salmonella, which if digested could cause stomach upset and illness. The higher the E.coli, the higher the risk.

Cool off safely

The sites formally tested at Digby’s Bridge, Hills Road and Boundary Road consistently showed E.coli readings that hit or exceeded maximum levels allowed.

The high readings were so frequent or water levels low, they were pulled from the testing programme in favour of other sites.

But warnings remained in place.

Mr Clarke said the ministry of health and ministry for the environment guidelines for recreational water was 550 E.coli / 100ml of water.

Lake Hood at Bayliss Beach was rated “very good” for swimming and at the opposite end on the main swimming beach –

even with a late December peak of E.coli – was still rated “very good”.

The Lake Camp samples were taken near the swimming pontoon at the northwest end and at Lake Clearwater west of the camping area by a boat ramp.

Both were also graded “very good”.

The environmental authority

checks popular sites throughout Canterbury District based on the risk of faecal contamination and bacteria. These could be from sewage, stormwater, rural run-off or birds.

Ecan recommended people avoided swimming during or shortly after rainfall because urban or agricultural run-off could affect water quality.

Local eateries earn top dining marks

Ashburton has scored a triple win in this year’s Beef and Lamb Excellence Awards.

Three restaurants have been named as award recipients by a team of culinary experts. Braided Rivers in Ashburton, Shackleton’s Bar and Grill at Brinkley Resort in Methven and Stronechrubie in Mt Somers have been acknowledged as restaurants the judges believe have beef and lamb cuisine that reaches the highest standard of New Zealand fine dining.

For Paul and Gayle Creswick, Brinkley Village owners, this is their 13th award in succession, and each one is as satisfying as the last, Mr Creswick said.

“Continuing to win these awards demonstrates consistency. The judges don’t tell you when they’re coming and they don’t tell you when they’ve been. We throw a lot of energy into designing our menu and maintaining standards.”

This year’s award was made for Shackleton’s twice cooked, slow braised Wakanui beef oxtail and for a merino lamb rack. The oxtail recipe owes its origins to Mr Creswick’s grandmother, who was also a restaurateur.

Stronechrubie owner and chef Sean Brown said he was “stoked” to be able to hang his ninth beef and lamb award on his bar wall.

“It means we’re keeping our standards up

there. We’re lucky, we’re a small restaurant and I’m the only chef so the way our meals go out to diners never changes,” he said.

What did change this year, however, is that he suspects the beef and lamb judges were in his restaurant when he was recovering from a back operation and he was directing wife Madeline in the job of stand-in chef.

“That was pretty easy though because she’s been watching me in the kitchen for eight years.”

Stronechrubie’s award was made for a lamb shank dish and for a beef steak with a creamy blue cheese topping.

Braided Rivers is a relative newcomer to the awards with just one on the wall, but Ashburton Trust chair Alister Lilley said a second award was confirmation that Braided Rivers was not just setting high standards but it was also consistently meeting these.

The awards were for the restaurant’s slow roasted lamb shoulder and its Beef Wellington.

The Excellence Awards are designed to acknowledge a consistently high standard of beef and lamb cuisine. Restaurants are not compared with each other but are judged on their individual merits. In order to receive the award, restaurants must score more than 70 per cent on two separate visits by different anonymous assessors.

About 200 restaurants applied to be judged in the awards.

Three Mid Canterbury restaurants have won awards for their beef and lamb meals.

In brief Body still in Libya Efforts to bring home the body of a New Zealand woman shot dead on a Libyan beach are making “good progress” but no arrests over the death have been made, authorities say. Wellington health worker Lynn Howie, 46, and her British-born boyfriend Mark De Salis, 48, were reportedly killed execution-style as they picnicked on an isolated beach at Sabratha, about 100km from Tripoli, last week. Ms Howie, a mother of two, was in Libya to visit Mr De Salis and had planned to travel on to London. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) said it was providing consular assistance to Ms Howie’s family and helping to repatriate her body.

Mexico inspires prickly exhibit

Ashburton woman Letitia Thomson is preparing to take on other emerging designers at the Ellerslie International Flower Show next month.

The 20-year-old student is entering her third year studying for a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University and is in her second year working at the Ashburton District Council as a summer student in parks and recreation.

In the competition to find the best emerging designer,

Miss Thomson will team up with close friend and fellow student Ashleigh Matthews, of Christchurch. It is their first time competing.

Miss Thomson said they would be competing against eight other entries – three from Lincoln University.

“I’ve always wanted to do it.

It’s been a longterm goal.”

The design brief for the competition was a garden for a mid-30s aged couple who had emigrated to New Zealand.

Exhibitors got to choose their country.

They chose Mexico.

Miss Thomson said their inspiration came from a house in the Lincoln township where there was a mud house and cacti. Further research brought up different ideas.

Since confirmation of their entry, the women had collected authentic looking items from opportunity shops and through contacts.

But Miss Thomson said donated or borrowed items were still needed. They included more cacti, terracotta pots or old wooden chairs.

Family and friends had volunteered to help set up for the show to the design of the women.

They had 10 days to complete it before the show opened to the public - and no practise.

“I don’t know what to expect . . . I’ve got mixed emotions. I’m nervous, excited but it’s stressful.”

“It will be good on the CV and getting our name out there . . . and good experience.”

Miss Thomson still has one year before she completes her degree.

One of the hardest decisions a family may have to make is moving an elderly relative into care.

It’s an emotional time for everyone and usually comes with the added challenge of finding the best possible care facility to meet the elderly person’s care.

To help families make informed decisions, the New Zealand Aged Care Association (NZACA), has come up with a website designed to make the process a little easier.

The new website - My Parent needs care. What do I do? Offers answers to a range of questions and has collated a raft of

information about rest homes that will help the decision making process says NZACA chief executive Martin Taylor.

“More and more people make calls to the association asking the same questions: how do I apply for an assessment for Mum? Who pays for the care?

Does she have to sell the house?

What questions will the DHB

ask? What are my rights?”

The website www.findaresthome.co.nz provides straight-forward answers to common questions that everyone has about rest home, hospital and dementia care.

“This is the only website in New Zealand that collates all of the most important information around aged residential care into one place to help people get the best quality care for their ageing relatives. Before we did this people were searching for hours on multiple websites, which was frustrating and inefficient,” Mr Taylor said.

The website provides essential information about how to apply for a care assessment, what questions the assessors

will ask, who to engage with at your District Health Board, how much your parent would be expected to pay, the different types of care available, right through to arranging enduring powers of attorney.

The website also includes a geographical search function so users can find the nearest aged care facility. A description of each rest home is included showing the services they offer, contact information, the number of rooms and their vacancies.

The Ministry of Health’s website lists seven aged care facilities in the Ashburton District with a total of 336 beds ranging over resthome, hospital and dementia care.

Plans are in place for the worstcase scenario as Gisborne enters day three of its water crisis.

The main water pipe between the Mangapoike Dam and the Waingake Water Treatment Plant was severed by a 70-metre landslide on Monday. The council immediately imposed water restrictions to get the city through the crisis as it faces hot summer days, dry gardens and the processing season poised to start.

Mayor Meng Foon says he is pleased Gisborne people have heeded the “save water now” message and reduced water use by almost a third yesterday.

Water use was down to 15,653m3 yesterday, from 25,000m3 on Monday.

Boeing for house?

Fancy being the only person on the block with a Boeing 747 as your house? For a cool $130,000, the dream could come true. A Qantas 747-400 forward airframe and passenger cabin is up for sale on the auction website Trade Me. While there had been other planes sold on the website, this was believed to be the largest listing, a Trade Me spokesman said. The vendor, airlinetraining, is asking $130,000 or near offer for the item that includes cockpit lining, quadrant, control columns, upper deck and lower deck airframe and cabin with passenger cabin fittings. Prospective buyers can inspect the plane by appointment, but it is based in Melbourne.

Time runs out Time is running out to save a character house which has significant cultural value to Christchurch. Former senior curator of the Christchurch Art Gallery Neil Roberts has been desperately trying to keep the house of well-known artist William A Sutton from being boarded up and left to vandals in the city’s residential red zone. Mr Roberts has not yet settled with Crown and is one of 157 people in the city who have been granted an extension to stay in the red zone until the end of this month. But after that date, Mr Roberts will be out of options and out of insurance cover for his contents. Mr Roberts said CERA have agreed to board up the house and have no plans to demolish it but Mr Roberts said this will make it a target for thieves and squatters - something he cannot bear to think about.

Youth drinking a cultural problem Coen Lammers EDITOR

T

he sight of an intoxicated nine-year-old boy at a Hamilton a skatepark has shocked the

nation.

The video clip has raised many questions about our drinking culture and how it affects our youngest citizens, in Mid Canterbury and around the country.

Some commentators have brushed the video off as a one-off incident but others see the events as a warning sign of a wider problem.

Whether other young children drink alcohol, in Ashburton or elsewhere, remains unclear but the attitude demonstrated by others in the video was just as concerning.

Most other children and young adults in the video laughed at the stumbling nine-year-old and showed no concern for the health of the youngster.

Professor Doug Sellman of the National Addiction Centre yesterday squarely laid the blame at the “liberal alcohol policies’’ in this country. He said these policies had increased outlets in lower socio-economic neighbourhoods and allowed extensive alcohol marketing to glamourise the product to younger people.

Many countries in the OECD are just as relaxed around alcohol advertising and sell liquor or beer in supermarkets, petrol stations and other corner shops without having the Kiwi drinking issue.

Those countries and their citizens simply have a far more mature attitude towards alcohol, which is neither glamorised nor stigmatised.

The fascination with alcohol is not triggered by advertising, but starts by watching mum, dad and their wider community have a few drinks and laughs at home or at friends’ places.

If those adults demonstrate restraint and educate their children, those youngsters are more likely to have a healthy attitude towards drinking. If not, those same children are just as likely to follow a negative role model.

The fact that no-one at the Hamilton skatepark spoke up is no different from any of us failing to speak up when any adult in our vicinity clearly has had enough to drink.

The nine-year-old in Hamilton was merely a reflection of how adults behave in homes and bars around New Zealand.

YOUR VIEW Second bridge Although it won’t directly affect me, except through considerably higher rates, I am extremely concerned that some councillors still want to push traffic (much will be heavy traffic), via Chalmers Ave/East Tinwald, through residential areas of the town by supporting the Notice of Requirement for land designation to acquire land in East Tinwald for this purpose.

This project will not be completed for at least 12 to 15 years by which time it will be inadequate and a bypass or ring road will be necessary soon after.

Chalmers Ave/East Tinwald will not address our traffic issues!

NZTA must pay for any alternative route and of course NZTA may support an inferior short-term option when an incompetent, arrogant, self-centered council opts to pay a large portion of the construction costs from residents’ hard-earned rates.

Too many councillors are not listening to the people and are more interested in satisfying their own egos by undermining real reasoning from elected members who have done their homework and who are listening and have a view to the future.

I urge people to fill in the submission form with their views opposing the Notice of Requirement and have it in to council by January 17.

This will be the last chance to put your view forward and yes it does affect every citizen of the county in a big way.

To increase traffic numbers to maybe 14,000 a day by pursuing the unpopular option of Chalmers Ave/East Tinwald to relieve congestion on State Highway 1 is just going to increase the danger on an already dangerous avenue and adjoining streets to school children, the elderly, cause considerable severance and pollution and not address the

real traffic problems.

It is not just the avenue but all the urban side streets as well.

To me this option is ridiculous when there are much better options that will address the traffic issues and be much safer and more efficient.

The best options may cost NZTA a little more but will serve the country and State Highway 1 users into the future.

Look to the future. Let common-sense prevail and get those submission forms in by January 17 with a few words on your views and opposing the Notice of Requirement.

African lion hanged in ‘death zoo’ A young African lion has died after getting its head caught in cables in its cage at an Indonesian zoo notorious for hundreds of animal deaths in recent years.

The 18-month-old lion named Michael was found early Tuesday at the zoo in Surabaya, in the east of the main island of Java, said zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat.

“The lion was found hanging from the roof of his cage.

He was very young and got his head stuck in cables that keepers use to open and close the cage,” Supangkat told AFP. Supangkat insisted that the death was an accident and not due to negligence. Police were investigating its death, he added.

A number of people have been killed or injured in an explosion at a chemical factory in Japan, police and reports said. “There was some explosion triggered by some sort of chemical reaction during plant operations,” said a police spokesman in Mie, central Japan. “It seems a number of people were killed or injured,” he said, adding they were not sure of exact numbers. Ranko Hirai, a spokeswoman at Mitsubishi Materials, said: “We confirmed that there was an explosion at our plant in Yokkaichi, where we produce silicon materials. We have also confirmed that people were injured. We don’t know about deaths.”

Former Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari has appeared before an anti-corruption court over multi-million-dollar corruption allegations dating back to the 1990s. The cases against Zardari relate to kickbacks, moneylaundering and the illegal construction of a polo ground at the prime minister’s official residence, during his slain wife Benazir Bhutto’s two stints as premier.

As president, Zardari enjoyed immunity from prosecution, but this ended when he stepped down in September last year after five years in office. After a brief session, the hearing was adjourned to January 18.

The incident came just two days after a wildebeest was found dead in its cage at the zoo, which has been dubbed the “death zoo” because so many animals have died there prematurely in recent years due to neglect.

Among them have been endangered orangutans, a tiger whose food was laced with for-

Bali deaths mystery Sunshine Coast mother and daughter Noelene and Yvana Bischoff played together and travelled together, but the mystery of how they died together in Bali lingers. The pair died after becoming violently ill on Saturday, less than 24 hours after checking in to a beachfront resort on the holiday island. There has been speculation they ate toxic fish and although Indonesian authorities have agreed for an autopsy to be done in Queensland, they also want to continue their investigation after finding 29 types of medication in the Bischoffs’ hotel room. A family spokeswoman, however, says the Indonesian investigation isn’t expected to hold up the repatriation of the bodies for more than 48 hours. The day before they died, the mother and daughter, 54 and 14, were seen seemingly fit and well at an elephant farm.

Xero shares hit new technology high

By Tamsyn Parker Listed accountancy software company Xero smashed through a new closing high yesterday as the firm’s shares gained 7.4 per cent to hit $39.25 each.

Xero’s previous closing high was $37.30, reached on November 6, although the company touched an intra-day high of $41.50 in November.

Yesterday’s rise came despite no news from the company and sent its value over $5 billion on turnover worth more than $19 million.

Greene, said all the stocks in the technology sector had done well this week.

“Investors are really looking for growth in 2014. It’s an overall market rerating in that software/IT sector.”

Williamson said he believed that retail investors were behind the buying.

Dairy stoush risk for NZ Inc French food giant Danone’s legal action against Fonterra will cause uncertainty for investors and is more bad press for both the dairy co-operative and New Zealand, says a market commentator.

The Paris-based company said yesterday it had begun a claim in the High Court at Auckland against Fonterra together with arbitration proceedings in Singapore, to get compensation after it recalled infant formula products in eight countries during last year’s botulism scare.

Danone, which is the parent company of infant formula manufacturer Nutricia, last year put the cost of the recall at 350 million ($576 million) and wants compensation for both the losses it suffered and the harm caused to its reputation.

Fonterra caused panic in August last year after it suspected that 38 tonnes of whey protein had been contaminated with a botulism-causing bacterium.

The issue was later found to be a false alarm but not before Fonterra customers, including Nutricia, had recalled baby formula products. A spokeswoman for the French company would not say how much compensation was being sought and said the total amount of damages would be worked out at the time of the trial.

But she said the affair had caused “serious damage to the Danone business”.

“Danone anticipates a freecash-flow loss of 300 million for the fiscal year 2013. Secondly, the recall had a significant impact in terms of brand reputation and Danone will be seeking a fair compensation for that,” she said.

Fonterra said it was “disappointed” with the action and will “vigorously defend any proceedings”.

Fonterra chief executive Theo Spierings said in December that he expected any court action would show it had no liability in its contract.

Fonterra has made a $14 million loss provision for the 2012/13 financial year to take into account the impact of the botulism scare.

ANZ rural economist Conn Williams said quite a few people

thought this was “inadequate” when Danone said they’d lost 350 millon in the recall. While eight Fonterra customers recalled products during the scare last August, Fonterra had reached commercial agreements with all but Danone.

Hamilton Hindin Greene director Grant Williamson said while Fonterra seemed confident in its ability to defend the action, it would create uncertainty for investors.

Units in the Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund fell 1.71 per cent yesterday to $5.76.

Williamson said the court action was not unexpected but that the negative press wasn’t good for the company or New Zealand’s reputation.

PS4 beats XBox One Sony says it has sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles in 2013. That beats out rival Microsoft’s Xbox One, which sold 3 million units.

QUICK MEAL

Thai red curry with pumpkin, cabbage and prawns 2t oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped 3T red curry paste 400ml coconut cream ¾ C salt-reduced chicken stock 500g pumpkin, peeled and cut into pieces 200g raw peeled prawns 2C finely shredded cabbage 2T chopped fresh coriander Lime wedges to garnish Steamed rice to serve Sliced red chilli to garnish ■ Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the red curry paste and stirfry for 1 minute, or until fragrant.

■ Add the coconut cream, chicken stock and pumpkin. Simmer for 10 minutes, or until the pumpkin is almost tender. Add the prawns and simmer for a further 2 to 3 minutes, or until they begin to change colour.

■ Add the cabbage and simmer for a further minute, taking it off the heat while the cabbage is still crisp and bright green.

Stir through the coriander. Garnish with the lime wedges and sliced red chilli. Serve with steamed rice.

Next month’s Coast to Coast will see the Currie brothers go head to head over the longest day.

Braden will be back to defend his title and yesterday older brother Glen announced his last minute entry to the 243kms multisport traverse of the South Island. It will be Glenn’s third go at the epic multisport race, after coming third back in 2011, while it will also be Braden’s third effort after he came third in his first attempt in 2012 before crossing the finish line in at Sumner Beach first last year.

The nationals have been played in Queenstown for the past 10 years, but the tournament has moved to Rotorua International Stadium for the next two years.

The tournament is played over two days with teams divided into pools for Saturday and then the top teams in each pool advancing to the cup competition on Sunday.

‘Any scalp will do’

Mid Canterbury are one of the minnows at the National Sevens tournament in Rotorua this weekend, but coach Mark Cousins still believes they can take down one of the big boys.

Mid Canterbury’s last trip to the nationals was a winless one in 2012, and in 2014 they are hoping to come away with least one win but as one of only two Heartland Championship unions, as well as Poverty Bay, at the tournament it will take a concerted effort.

“It’s more about putting in creditable performances,” Cousins said.

“The boys have been training well so I’m confident we’ll get up there and give a good account of ourselves.

“If we click we can potentially knock some teams over.

“Any scalp will do us.”

From the side that qualified at the South Island tournament, Cousins has lost the experience of Heartland representatives Jon Dampney, Dwayne Burrows and Peni Manumanuniwila.

That leaves Will Mackenzie and Richard Catherwood as the only players to have previously attended the nationals, when Cousins took the side to Queenstown in 2012, when Mid Canterbury finished without a win.

However, Manumanuniwila’s Southbridge and Mid Canterbury team-mate Willie McGoon brings his size and speed into the mix, having previously played for Canterbury at the nationals.

Livewire Ashburton College pair of Nete Caucau and Seta Koroitamana, who were part of Mid Canterbury’s Meads Cup triumph last year, both have game-breaking ability.

Richard Burns, Jay Aitken,

Sete Matiavi and Teleni Seu also come into the side.

“It’s an inexperienced side but the talent’s there. I’ve got no concerns at all across the squad and am pretty comfortable with the depth.”

Mid Canterbury meets North Harbour at 1.05pm before taking on Taranaki at 4.45pm and complete pool play against a Canterbury side featuring New Zealand representative Mark Jackman at 6.45pm. Results determine their schedule for day two in the cup, bowl or plate.

Pool play kicks off at 12.05pm tomorrow and will be broadcast live on SKY Sport 2 and the Rugby Channel on both days.

Jackman chasing the black jersey New Zealand sevens squad member, Mark Jackman will be hoping to blow out the cobwebs with some solid performances for Canterbury as he looks to regain his place in the national side.

Jackman, and several other squad members, will be under the watchful eye of New Zealand sevens coach Gordon Tietjens over the weekend before the entire squad goes into camp on Monday to prepare for the next two legs of the Sevens World Series, in Las Vegas on January 2426 and then in Wellington February 7-8.

As well as Jackman, Canterbury includes international representatives William Saukuru and Sakenasa Aca who are both Fijian sevens reps and Juan Pablo Metuaze who has played for Chile.

Canterbury is coached by former Mid Canterbury Heartland coach Chris Neill and also has former Mid Canterbury import Solomona Paraki.

Flood’s England rugby career on the line Toby Flood’s 60-cap England rugby career could come to an end today when Stuart Lancaster names his initial elite player squad ahead of this season’s Six Nations.

Flood is set to join French giants Toulouse at the end of the campaign and, with Lancaster

so far resolute in holding to his line not to select overseas-based players, Leicester coach Richard Cockerill feels he might drop the playmaker and promote the likes of 20-year-old George Ford to try to gain experience ahead of next year’s World Cup in England.

“We’ve had discussions about it. It looks like that might be the case, that Toby may not be included, but we’ll have to wait and see,” Cockerill said yesterday.

“Toby and Stuart Lancaster have had those discussions and you could intimate that if Toby

Southern Steel defender Phoenix Karaka has been elevated into the Silver Ferns team of 12 as the players prepare to embark on their first tour of 2014 to the United Kingdom later this week.

Karaka was initially named as one of four training partners to accompany the Silver Ferns on their UK tour and her promotion into the team comes at the expense of Silver Ferns captain Casey Kopua who continues to recover from scheduled ankle surgery last month. Karaka was a key part of the New Zealand under-21 team which won the World Youth Netball Championship in Glasgow last year.

Metro proves too strong Mid Canterbury were outclassed

by Christchurch Metro Red at the South Island Primary Cricket Tournament in Gore yesterday. The Mid Canterbury batsman faced tricky conditions after a delayed start yesterday when a day’s rain and leaky covers made runs hard to come by. Mid Canterbury was 31/4 after 28.4 overs before Archie Redfern and Will Smith combined for a crucial 38-run fifth wicket partnership. Redfern was out for 27 and Smith followed shortly after for 14 at 76/6. The final four wickets fell for four runs as Mid Canterbury was bowled out for 80 off 52.2 overs. Mid Canterbury had Metro Red under pressure at 15/4 in the 10th over, with Smith taking a wicket and a run out and Richard Turpie two wickets. However, Metro produced their own crucial 93-run fifth wicket partnership to get the first innings win, and pushed on to declare at 140/6. Mid Canterbury was sent back into bat chasing just 60 for an unlikely outright win with time running out, but safely survived to stumps at 15/2 to avoid the outright loss. Mid Canterbury complete their tournament against Southland Country today.

Way clear for Auckland Suddenly a measure of the mist and guesswork has cleared for Auckland in the domestic T20 competition. After a 29-run loss to Northern Districts at Eden Park on Wednesday, Auckland’s task is simple: they must beat their neighbours in the return fixture at Seddon Park today, then topple bottom-placed Central Districts at Eden Park on Tuesday if they are to make the playoff game in Hamilton next week. Leaders and defending champions Otago, who hung on to edge out Wellington in a final-ball thriller in Dunedin on Wednesday, will advance straight to next Saturday’s final if they beat CD on Sunday. Heavy loss timely reminder for Black Caps

By DaviD Leggat Amid the wreckage of New Zealand’s bowling display at Seddon Park, it was difficult finding a positive to take away from Hamilton.

However, bowling coach Shane Bond did, after a fashion.

Having seen the West Indies take apart the New Zealand attack to the tune of over seven runs an over, Bond cast an eye a few days forward.

“We’ve got an even stronger batting lineup going to hit this country shortly,” he said, referring to world No 1 ODI team India’s arrival on Monday.

“We’ve seen the damage they can do if they get going. If we allow good batters to bring the game to us we’re in trouble.”

Translation: this was a giant, and timely, wakeup call.

Bond, the former champion quick, spent yesterday running over the tape of the West Indies’ sizzling batting performance, in which opener Kieran Powell (73 off 44 balls), Kirk Edwards (123 not out off 108 balls) and captain Dwayne Bravo (106 off 81 balls) ripped New Zealand apart.

Unless you were in the New Zealand camp, it was rich entertainment. The West Indies smeared 41 fours and nine sixes in the 50 overs. In the first 12 overs, when lefthander Powell was laying the groundwork, he and Johnson Charles hit 15 fours and two sixes.

Captain Brendon McCullum admitted he was angry and frustrated by the bowling effort.

“We can’t bowl as badly as what we did again. Normally you might get one or two maybe

have an off day, but if we’re honest all of us were off [on Wednesday],” he said.

Bond’s personal philosophy, perhaps as befitting one of the country’s fastest and most penetrative bowlers, is to maintain an attacking mindset even when things appear to be slipping away. “When you’re put under pressure, what you can do is rather than try to get batsmen out, all you do is try to restrict the runs.”

The West Indies don’t possess the longest batting lineup going around, but with Edwards and Bravo set - Powell already having given the bowlers some serious tap - Bond’s impression was a case of damage control set in, bowling wide yorkers and hoping to avoid a towelling.

“We ended up going at 12 an over. I’m not a big fan of just

bowling not to get players out.

“The quickest way to slow the run rate down is take wickets. Yeah, you might travel [get hammered] by trying to take wickets, but people were travelling anyway by trying not to.

“I’d much rather take an approach of looking to take wickets and I thought we didn’t do that.”

Bond felt New Zealand’s bowlers didn’t fight back once the Windies had control.

“When you’re put on the back foot there comes a point where you have to try and push back. We never made that push, they got momentum and never gave us a sniff. That was disappointing.”

Bond is right: days like that tend to focus the mind.

And India, with their batting clobbering machine, should help that process too.

Isner again marathon man

BY KRIS SHANNON If the rules of tennis made room draws, yesterday’s quarter-final between John Isner and Philipp Kohlschreiber would have met every criterion.

But with a spot in the Heineken Open semi-finals up for grabs, there had to be a winner and Isner emerged on top after a marathon match at Stanley Street.

In almost two-and-a-half hours of high-quality tennis, neither man managed to break the other’s serve, with all three sets requiring tie-breaks to find a victor.

Isner came back from a set down to win both the second and third breakers, setting up a semi-final today against Roberto Bautista Agut.

It could have been an allAmerican clash in the final four, but Bautista Agut dispatched of an out-of-sorts Jack Sock 6-1 6-3 earlier in the day.

Isner, the third seed, will start as a firm favourite against the world No 73, though the American’s conditioning will receive a severe test following yesterday’s exertions.

Fortunately for the 2.08m Isner, his type of game is hardly built on covering every inch of the court.

The world No 14 showed his reliance on his not-so-secret weapon against Kohlschreiber, firing down 18 aces and winning a remarkable 83 per cent of points off his first serve.

“I served exceptionally well and that’s the only reason I won,” Isner said.

“I was able to stay even with him throughout the whole match, primarily because of my serve.

“Some days you’re just in a good rhythm, and I was certainly in a good rhythm today.

I need to make adjustments outside of my serve and that’s what I have to get better on.”

Any deficiencies in Isner’s ground game weren’t exploited, with Kohlschreiber bringing up only three break points across 18 games.

Isner had just seven of his own, but managed the crucial mini-break to take out the final tie-break.

With each set lasting the distance, Isner was always going to hold the advantage, given he possesses the best tie-break re-

cord on the ATP. The American also had previous experience of playing in matches without service breaks, unsurprisingly so given his serving prowess.

“You certainly don’t see it too often but there’s a lot of things when I play that you don’t see too often,” Isner said. “It’s not out of the realm of possibility with me.”

For Kohlschreiber, who reached the quarter-finals for the ninth time in 10 trips to Auckland, there was little to rue after a match devoid of opportunities.

He had won his previous two matches against Isner but failed to manufacture many openings in his return game.

“It was one of those matches where I really didn’t do anything wrong,” he said.

“It was very interesting and high-quality, but it was tough

to be a loser. I didn’t have too many mistakes so it was a bit strange to lose.

“There were maybe two or three little chances in the whole two hours and he played very well in those important moments.”

Isner will be hoping to do likewise when he encounters Bautista Agut today. The Spaniard was clinical against Sock but didn’t really need to do much other than keep the ball in the court, wrapping up the match in just 63 minutes.

“He made a lot of mistakes because I forced him, returning everything,” said the world No 73. “When he has no time, he is a little bit worse.”

The third man into semifinals was Yen-Hsun Lu, who ended the fairytale run of lucky loser Steve Johnson in a straight sets victory.

Hayward right in it

Big team for champs

It will be the battle between three of New Zealand’s top female riders in the final of the Bayer FEI World Cup New Zealand series on Sunday at Woodhill Sands.

Three time series winner Katie McVean (Mystery Creek) has her two stars Dunstan Kiwi Iron Mark and Dunstan Springfield entered, with her world champs team-mate Samantha McIntosh (Cambridge) also on two with Argento and Estina, and Mid Canterbury’s Susie Hayward on Andretti.

Barring a complete disaster of some sort, one of the three will be toasted as the 20132014 series champion on Sunday evening.

McIntosh is at the top of the leader board with 72 points, while McVean and Hayward

have had just one apiece but been very consistent.

McVean is in second on 67, with the 2012-2013 series victor Maurice Beatson (Dannevirke), who won’t be at the final, in third on 65 and Hayward fourth on 60.

With points and a half up for grabs in the final there is plenty at stake, but working out the likely winners is tricky because just the four best rounds from each rider count.

The New Zealand series started in October in Hawke’s Bay, with four of the six rounds qualifiers of the 2014 World Equestrian Championships, which are being held in France.

The series winner has the opportunity to travel to Lyon, in France, for the world final in April.

Mid Canterbury Tennis has their largest ever contingent at a national junior event with eight players entered into the 12s National Championships in Christchurch starting today.

National tournament tennis returns to Christchurch for the first time since earthquakes, with the restored Wilding Park resuming as the host venue.

In the boys singles Mid Canterbury has Edwin Dargue, Sam Bubb, Duncan Rollinson, Jarrad Hill and Harry Dargue with Tessa McCann, seeded 11th, Millie and Sophie Ness in the girls’ draw.

All eight will take to the

court today and have until midday to enter the doubles.

“It is fantastic to see the biggest group heading away to a national championship and they will surely gain some very valuable experience,” Mid Canterbury Tennis coach Chris Anderson said.

Mid Canterbury Tennis had filled the gap for Canterbury Tennis hosting the under 16 nationals last year while repair work continued at Wilding Park.

Guildford to ply his trade in France Former All Blacks wing Zac Guildford will enter a new chapter in his rugby career, not to mention his life, when he heads to France to take up a three-year contract with Clermont Auvergne.

The 24-year-old, who has played 10 tests for New Zealand since his debut against Wales in 2009, will leave at the end of the Super Rugby season with the Crusaders. He is contracted to the NZRU until the end of 2014 but has an out-clause with Hawkes Bay and has chosen to exercise that.

It’s hard to argue with Guildford’s move.

He has had a troubled time over the past few years, with a number of alcoholrelated incidents, and he might be looking for a fresh start as well as a chance to cash in at his stage in his professional career.

He is also behind a number of good, young wings on the New Zealand scene like Julian Savea, Ben Smith, Cory Jane and Frank Halai, and had long been linked with a move overseas.

“It’s never OK to be losing talented rugby players but Zac has to do what is best for him,” Hawkes Bay Rugby Union chief executive Mike Bishop said.

“He goes with our blessing. He’s been a favourite son of ours for the past six or seven years. We would have loved to have seen him stay and play out the rest of his career with us but he’s always welcome back here.”

Guildford made his Hawkes Bay debut in 2007 as an 18-year-old and he was also a member of the gold medalwinning New Zealand sevens team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Clermont was expected announce the move overnight and it’s expected he has been signed to replace former All Blacks wing Sitiveni Sivivatu, who is moving to Castres.

Ashburton 16-year-old Bailie Perriton is looking to get out in front in the 250 production class of the New Zealand Superbike Series.

Fellow teenage speedster Jake Lewis of Rangiora, the European Junior Champion, claimed the trifecta at Ruapuna last weekend with Perriton pushing him all the way, finishing just a tenth of a second behind in the third and final race that doubled as the NZ 250 Grand Prix title race.

Last year Perriton was chasing the tail of eventual champion Australian Luke Burgess, but finished in front of the defending champion in all three races last week, however, he had to trail the 18-year-old Lewis across the finish line.

In Timaru, Perriton will look to make up the small margin and claim bragging rights over his close friend before Lewis returns to Spain for testing ahead of the 2014 WSBK Championships, missing the final two rounds of the championship series.

A good weekend and Perriton could set himself up to claim the New Zealand title over the final two rounds in Taupo and Fielding in March.

Lewis Dray is looking to record another round win in the Junior Development Series of the New Zealand Superbike Series in Timaru this weekend.

The New Zealand Superbike Series heads to Timaru’s Levels Raceway for the second round this weekend, and local lad Lewis Dray is looking for back-toback wins.

In round one at Ruapuna last weekend, Dray won the Junior Development Series New Zea-

land Grand Prix on a borrowed bike to be the top junior rider in round one.

He was the first junior across the line in race one and was in the lead on the final lap of race two only to suffer mechanical problems and was unable to finish.

“The bike just died on me in the last lap while I was in the

lead unfortunately,” Dray said.

Dray was then lucky enough to be loaned a bike to contest the grand prix race and was again the first junior and third overall, to finish on top of the junior standings for the weekend.

His nearest rival in the juniors is fellow Ashburton racer Sam Goulter, who is currently second behind Dray, and Dray wants to

keep it that way in Timaru.

“We have got the bike back up and running so it should be good.

“The plan will be the same as last weekend.

“Enjoy myself and do the best I can with first junior over the line my aim again.”

Dray has been riding for over three years and this is his third

time contesting the South Island legs of the national series, which has two stopovers in the North Island in March.

His practice involves riding at test days at Ruapuna or Levels “whenever he has time” so he knows the two tracks well, but his favourite out of the two is Timaru which could help him keep out in front.
