Lotto fever hits Methven

After 24 years of waiting, Methven’s Four Square Lotto outlet has finally sold its first, first division winning Lotto ticket.

Methven’s rumour mill has kicked into overdrive after news emerged that a $142,857 winning ticket for Saturday night’s Lotto draw was sold at the shop’s Lotto outlet. So far, the winner is yet to come forward and staff are holding their breath with every ticket they check.

Rachael Eddington from Methven Four Square said staff were excited.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Ms Eddington said.

The first division win comes hot on the heels of two second division wins with tickets sold from Methven Four Square in recent weeks.

“So we have been pretty lucky for the past few weeks,” she said.

Before that, the biggest prize winning ticket they had sold was a Strike Four winner.

As it’s yet to be claimed, it’s unknown if the winner is from Methven or someone who purchased a ticket while passing through. Staff hoped it was a local though and were hoping they would come to

the store to check their ticket, although people could do so at any outlet, or online.

Unfortunately for the winner, six other ticket holders around the country also had the night’s winning numbers, so they had to share the first division prize.

But an extra $142,857 in your bank account is nothing to be sneezed at.

The Methven community is now abuzz, as everyone wonders who the lucky winner might be. Staff at the Four Square spent yesterday relaying the news to customers and urging them to check their tickets.

“Maybe they don’t know they have won it and they might be as surprised as us,” she said.

The first division winning tickets from Saturday night’s Lotto draw were sold at Methven Four Square, Rangiora New World, Highway Supermart in Auckland, Roselands Lotto in Papakura, Coopers Beach Four Square in Northland, Kaiapoi New World, and one was bought on MyLotto.co.nz by a player in Wellington.

Powerball was not struck, meaning it jackpots to $10 million, while Strike also jackpots to $1.2 million.

Kate Lambarth hands her Lotto ticket to Methven Four Square’s Rachael Eddington to check, hoping that it might win her $142,857.

Andy Murray fans spark gun scare in UK British police arrested four men suspected of brandishing a gun at tennis star Andy Murray - but later realised they were autograph hunters with a tennis racquet. The mix up occurred in north London on Wednesday night when the Scot was in a car with his agent. It is understood that two men got out of another car and knocked on the window of Murray’s vehicle in an attempt to get him to sign a racquet, but the Wimbledon champion drove away. Things went from bad to worse for the men as a member of the public thought one of them was carrying a gun and contacted police. A police spokesman said the car was stopped in Chelsea, west London and four men were arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

Superyacht sinks A $6.8 million superyacht owned by a New Zealand businessman has sunk after catching fire in England. The Kahu, a 23-metre vessel described as a “successful luxury ocean explorer”, caught fire and subsequently sank while moored at a marina in the Isle of Wight last week. The boat was owned by Paul Rudling, 64, who has recently returned to New Zealand after founding a successful advanced composites company and more recently, a wind turbine rotor company. The two-year-old superyacht was advertised for sale at the time of the fire.

Thousands at Star Wars auditions Thousands of people auditioned for the next Star Wars film in Britain at the weekend - so many in fact that organisers left many disappointed by shutting doors early due to the huge number.

They were responding to a casting call launched by Disney last week that it was looking for an actress to play a “streetsmart” and strong character aged 17 or 18, and an actor to play a capable and courageous young man for its Star Wars Episode VII, which is being made in Britain next year. Budding young thespians waited for hours in the pouring rain in Bristol, southwest England, for a meet and greet with casting directors.

Williams revealed on Instagram this week that he’s in a relationship with aspiring model Alana Raffie, a Sydneysider of South African descent. He posted a photo of the happy couple and another a short time later of the same woman on a beach with his nephew Malik.

By Friday, the photos had attracted more than 1000 comments - many from heartbroken followers. Williams’ sister Niall took to Instagram to defend the couple as some of the comments turned nasty.

A relative of Raffie described them as “an amazing couple”and welcomed Williams to the family. “People say that she is lucky to have him, but really, he is the lucky one.”

No more twerking Robin Thicke has ruled out the prospect of performing with Miley Cyrus again, insisting their raunchy routine at the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony was a one-off.

Woman in lucky escape from fire

An Ashburton mother and her two children narrowly escaped a major fire that engulfed their home early Saturday.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer Graeme Baker said the woman woke seconds before the smoke alarms sounded in her ablaze Creek Road home about 5am on Saturday, managing to grab her young children before fleeing the house.

She then bundled her children into her car and backed out the driveway before calling the fire service.

It is understood the woman is being supported by friends and family.

Mr Baker said it appeared the fire ignited on the outdoor decking area at the rear of the house, before going up an exterior wall.

The fire then spread into the roof cavity above the dining room and kitchen, extensively burning the rafters and causing

NZ pledges $150,000 aid for Philippines No Kiwis have been reported killed or injured by Typhoon Haiyan as New Zealand pledges $150,000 towards relief efforts in the storm-ravaged Philippines.

Authorities in the Philippines say the death toll from the massive typhoon, which flattened buildings and knocked out infrastructure, could be close to 10,000.

A spokesman for New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) said there were no reports that any of the 376 New Zealanders currently registered as being the Philippines had been killed or injured.

“All New Zealanders in areas affected

by Typhoon Haiyan are advised to follow any instructions issued by the local authorities and keep their family in New Zealand informed of their well-being,” MFAT said.

They were also advised to register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on www.safetravel.govt.nz Foreign Minister Murray McCully said the Government had contributed $150,000 to the Red Cross to support immediate relief efforts in the wake of the typhoon. He said the contribution would help the Red Cross maintain emergency supply stocks and carry out impact assessments in affected areas.

“Typhoon Haiyan was one of the largest storms on record and has had a major impact on the Philippines - a country that has recently been hit by successive natural disasters,” Mr McCully said.

“New Zealand will consider further support as the full extent of the damage becomes clear.”

The funding comes after the Government pledged $850,000 in aid to the Philippines, in response to last month’s earthquake and flooding.

Of that, $500,000 will be delivered by the charity Unicef.

Unicef NZ executive director Dennis McKinlay said a rapid assessment over the next few days would be critical to understanding the full extent of the damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan.

“This will determine the damage to infrastructure and to local communities, many of whom will have fled to other areas and be in need of urgent assistance,” he said.

“As in any natural or man-made disaster, children are among those who suffer the most. We are deeply concerned about the number of children who could potentially have been affected by Typhoon Haiyan.”

Canterbury fire safety officer Marc Reveley said an electrical fault in an outdoor light mounted on a low wall near the decking was responsible for the blaze.

“It would have been burning away for a long, long time before the woman woke up,” Mr Reveley said.

Neighbour Bridget Winiana, who was keeping an eye on the house yesterday while the occupant was away, said she looked after the woman’s children while firefighters were at the scene, saying they were calm, but appeared shocked.

The house was extensively smoke damaged, and smoke could be smelt from the road.

Mr Reveley said he would write up a fire report, and the incident would now be between the homeowner and her insurance company.

In brief Fatialofa funeral The funeral service for Samoan rugby great Peter Fatialofa will be held at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau on Wednesday.

In a statement released yesterday, Mr Fatialofa’s family said a family service would take place at the centre tomorrow night, while the funeral service is set for 10am on Wednesday. At the conclusion of the funeral service, Mr Fatialofa will be laid to rest at the Manukau Memorial Gardens. Mr Fatialofa died suddenly on Wednesday in Samoa, aged 54.

Three Mid Canterbury shepherds avoided serious injury when the ute they were in rolled down a steep hill after losing control on a gravel road near Methven early yesterday.

The three men were discharged from Christchurch Hospital hours later with minor injuries, despite their ute tumbling more than 100 metres down a hill, throwing one of its passengers from the vehicle about 4.30am on Zig Zag Road in Windwhistle.

Mr Beaumont said the three shepherds were believed to be travelling back towards Methven from a night out in the Lake Coleridge area, when the driver lost control on a downhill righthand bend on the shingle road, crashing through a fence

before rolling down the hill.

“We don’t think speed has been a major factor, and with alcohol, we don’t know about that until we have done tests to determine if it did play a role,” Mr Beaumont said.

Firefighters from the Methven and Hororata brigades joined St John ambulance staff from Darfield and Leeston to

assist police with the single car crash.

Mr Beaumont said it was too early to speculate what may have been the cause, but he reinforced the importance of wearing seatbelts and driving to the conditions, particularly on windy, shingle roads.

“Ensure that you’re always wearing your seatbelt, given the location of the man that was ejected from the car, who was about 20m away when it stopped, it appears he may have not been wearing a seatbelt.

“The car could have easily rolled on him, he was lucky to avoid serious injury.”

Mr Beaumont said police would be continuing with inquiries into the crash.

A number of new floats from different corners of the community will help make Ashburton’s annual Santa Parade bigger and better this year, organisers say.

There’s plenty of time for more floats to register, too, and organisers are hoping that even more businesses and community groups will come on board for what is traditionally a successful, fun event.

The Ashburton Business As-

sociation-organised parade will be held on December 7 and will this year include pre-parade entertainment for the first time, organiser Carol Johns said.

That entertainment will take place on the East Street chessboard from 11am – before a parade time of 12.30pm – and will involve Ronald McDonald, a balloon man, face painting and much more, including a chance to ride on Santa’s float in the parade.

That will be the prize up for grabs in a Santa sack competi-

tion. Children are being asked to make their own Santa sack and bring it along to the chessboard from 11am, with a winner picked and the sack’s maker getting to ride with Santa.

Mrs Johns said a number of new floats were already being planned and prepared for this year’s parade, but she was still happy to take on more.

“It’s been a huge response – it always is. The people of Ashburton really get behind it.

“If people want to get something up and done, we’d love to

have them; it’s all for the kids.”

The key to a good float in the Santa parade was colour, imagination, fun and a Christmas theme, Mrs Johns said.

The parade will start from Mona Square and travel up East Street, and back down again, with the feature float at the end set to carry the big, jolly man in the red suit.

With him will be the winner of the Santa sack competition, and his usual 50 fairies – the hunt for which will begin soon, Mrs Johns said.

A Mt Eden bar was held up at gunpoint in the early hours of Saturday. Just after midnight, the De Post Beer Café on was subject to an aggravated robbery, police said. Three men entered the bar, one in possession of a pistol and another armed with a screwdriver.

They allegedly threatened and assaulted three staff members who were in the process of cleaning up, before leaving with an undisclosed sum of cash from the bar safe.

Jobs in jeopardy A cloud hangs over the future of about 180 jobs at Silver Fern Farms’ lamb cut processing plant at Silverstream, near Mosgiel, because of the decline in lamb kill this season. SFF lamb cut workers were told on Friday by management that options were being considered, including the closure of the lamb cut department at Silverstream and the move of some work to its Finegand plant, near Balclutha.

Silver Fern chief executive Keith Cooper yesterday confirmed management had spoken to staff on Friday, outlining the effects of the decline in lamb kill, and added Chinese customers were requiring “less sophisticated” types of lamb cut processing. While options could include job growth for the Finegand plant, Mr Cooper conceded that could come at the expense of Silverstream’s jobs.

Pet smashes door Masterton flatmates are calling for a ban on the private use of fireworks after their beloved pet smashed his way through two wooden doors while trying to escape the noise. Their dog Bruno, a 3-year-old Australian cattle doghuntaway cross, narrowly avoided serious injury after chewing through two cat doors and forcing his sturdy frame through. Coral Griffis, who flats with Bruno’s owner, said the dog had been tethered in the backyard, when nearby residents began letting off fireworks on November 2.

Bruno was bleeding heavily from the mouth after his ordeal, which involved tearing a large chunk out of the laundry door.

String of attacks prompts appeal

By BRendan manning A string of attacks on the elderly has prompted an appeal to support one of society’s most vulnerable groups.

A 77-year-old Papatoetoe woman woke up to an unknown man sexually assaulting her about 6.30am testerday.

She activated a St John medical alarm and the man fled.

Shark finning to be banned

The attack came only days after a brutal home invasion in Pukekohe where an elderly couple were assaulted and tied up.

The offenders searched their home for an hour on Friday afternoon, stealing cash and jewellery before fleeing, with the victims left tied up in their lounge, police said.

That attack followed the sexual assault of a 87-year-old

Hastings grandmother who was grabbed and dragged into her lounge while gardening.

“The elderly in our community is a vulnerable group, just as children are, and they need to be regarded as such,” Counties Manukau Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher said. “Those that have a position to help the elderly need to ensure they do provide that extra support.”

The actions of the elderly south Auckland woman’s neighbours were to be “highly commended”, Mr Gallagher said.

“Their actions were in the highest tradition of what you would expect from a community response, sadly that’s not always the case.”

A 39-year-old man was now in custody in relation to the attack and has been charged with bur-

glary and assault with intent to commit sexual violation.

He is due to appear in Manukau District Court today.

Neighbours saw the man leave the house and thought he was acting suspiciously, Mr Gallagher said.

It was currently unknown how the man got into the elderly woman’s home, he said.

By ReBecca Quilliam Government ministers gave a dramatic demonstration of their commitment to shark conservation yesterday, by releasing three of the marine animals into the ocean, and then ensuring they swam in the right direction into open water.

“It’s like herding cats,” Conservation Minister Nick Smith said as he waded into the bay on Wellington’s south coastline.

Dr Smith and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy were on the coast to announce details of the draft National Plan of Action for Conservation and Management of Sharks.

Banning shark finning was part of that proposal and it was welcomed by conservation groups, but the seafood industry said if the shark was already dead it made sense to harvest some of the carcass rather than throw it all back.

It is already an offence under the Animal Welfare Act to fin a shark and return it to the sea alive. However, it is lawful to catch a shark, kill it, remove its fins and dump the carcass at sea.

Dr Smith said it was that kind of waste that would be targeted under the proposal, which was out for public consultation until December.

Seafood New Zealand chief executive Tim Pankhurst said the result of the proposal would be that instead of taking sharks’ fins from the dead animals, “the whole carcass just gets heaved back into the sea if it comes aboard dead”.

“No shark is targeted for their fins alone and in the tuna fishery where blue sharks are a significant bycatch the focus needs to be on reducing that catch.”

Church celebrates 120 years in style St David’s Union Church celebrated 120 years since the opening of the Greenstreet church in true style yesterday. About 70 church members flocked to the Greenstreet Community Hall, where a full programme of services and speakers, including Ashburton Presbytery moderator Robert Jones and St David’s Parish Council chairman Allen Lilley, who addressed the gathering.

Up to five St David’s Union Church services a year are held at the Greenstreet hall, a parish it has been a part of for the past 37 years.

Logie has passport confiscated in Sri Lanka

By ReBecca Quilliam Green Party MP Janet Logie says she is “safe” after being detained by Sri Lankan authorities and her passport confiscated.

She was travelling with Australian senator Lee Rhiannon on a fact-finding trip to Sri Lanka in the lead-up to Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Colombo.

Their trip was scheduled to end yesterday and had the aim of finding out first-hand about

the human rights abuses that the Sri Lankan people were experiencing, a Green Party spokesperson said.

Four Sri Lankan immigration officials shut down a meeting before the MPs’ scheduled press conference and took Ms Logie’s and Ms Rhiannon’s passports.

Ms Logie told APNZ immigration officials told her and Ms Rhiannon that they had breached the Immigration Act, “which we have disagreed with because we applied for visas, we

said we were Members of Parliament and we went for a category for special projects, which we were advised to do.

“Through the Department of Foreign Affairs in Australia we told them we were coming and what sort of visa we were on,” she said.

“We don’t consider that we’ve done anything to breach the act.”

The MPs are being detained at their hotel. The officials wanted to separate the pair and

get separate statements.

“We weren’t comfortable doing that so we’ve called the Australian High Commission and we’re waiting for their reply.”

There was lots of Sri Lankan media covering the story and the pair had not been ill-treated in any way, Ms Logie said.

“I think it highlights the lack of democracy in the country that talking about human rights is seen as something to shut down by this government.”

Mr Key and his deputy Bill English discussed the National Party’s succession plans in an interview with TVNZ’s Q+A programme yesterday.

Mr Key said there was no succession agreement between them.

“And the truth is that we’ve got a broad caucus and there’s a lot of people you could point to that actually could come through, depending on the timing. I think there’s a range of people, both on the front bench and people who are emerging.”

Asked who he would choose out of senior ministers Steven Joyce and Judith Collins, Mr Key said that would not be his decision because he would not be part of the party caucus.

“The caucus would be making that decision, and if they were doing a coup, they wouldn’t be coming to consult me on it, so we’re not too worried about

that,” he joked. “I personally think both of them would make fine leaders and fine prime ministers, but there’s others as well, and it will depend on the timing.

“Hopefully it’s going to be a long way into the future, and that will bring other people into play as well.”

Exams get under way

By Brendan Manning The first major NCEA exam starts at 9.30am today when 47,000 Year 11 students sit their English exam. For most, it will be their first major secondary school exam.

Students taking Level 2 (Year 12) German will have their exam at the same time, while Level 3 Samoan and Scholarship statistics also take place then.

Nicolas Matijasevich, of Auckland’s Sacred Heart College, will be one of those lining up for the English exam and said he was “pretty prepared” and had spent Sunday doing some crucial final studying.

The 16-year-old said he had spent 10 to 15 hours studying for the English exam alone, on top of class work and studying for mock exams earlier this year.

His English exam would be followed by seven others - accounting, level one maths, history, biology, chemistry, physics and level two maths.

“I did well in my mock exams.

I did really well in my mid-year exams and then in my last set of mock exams I didn’t do as well.

I’m feeling a lot better ahead of these ones, I’ve done a lot more preparation.”

The pressure was intense for those who hadn’t gained enough credits through the year, Nicolas said.

“A few boys have heaps riding on this exam because to pass level one [English] you need to get 10 English credits, which some boys haven’t got.

“So if they don’t get their English credits, then they have to sit the whole of level one again.”

More than 143,000 students will be sitting their Levels 1, 2 and 3 end-of-year examinations over the next few weeks.

A smaller number will also do Scholarship exams.

School celebrates milestone

With what started as a school with 11 pupils and one teacher, it is clear the Dorie School of today – 125 years on - has moved with the times, but not all has been lost.

On Saturday, the small Mid Canterbury school celebrated its 125th jubilee, seeing today’s pupils come together with students and principals of decades gone by in what principal Anthony Doreen called “a day the school will never forget”.

Originally known as Acton School, it was following a meeting on January 21, 1888, that teacher Marion Fisher was appointed the sole teacher for the school with an 11-strong roll, consisting of pupils from five families.

Just a few months later it was decided the name would be changed to Dorie School, done in appreciation of the then principal John McLean who named his farm Dorie after his birthplace in Scotland.

Back then, a bell signaled the end of the day, and at Saturday’s gathering it was that exact same bell that was used to mark the beginning of the jubilee celebration at 3pm.

With a growing presence of technology, numerous classrooms and a roll of about 50 pupils, it is clear the Dorie School of today is a vastly different model to that of 125 years ago, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the strong ties past pupils have to the community and the school.

That was obvious through Roy Gardiner and Edna Brad-

burn, an elderly brother and sister who were in attendance, mixing with current and sixth generation pupil Benjamin Dolan and a host of former pupils and principals, including early 1960s headmaster John Kirby.

After presentations from school officials, present pupils and Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew, a Liquid Amber tree was planted by Ms Goodhew and Mr Kirby to serve as a permanent reminder of the historic occasion.

“We thought that tree would be a nice link to our English heritage we have at the school,” Mr Doreen said.

The jubilee celebration was rounded off by board of trustees chairperson Deborah Sloper, before departing for an afternoon tea gathering.

By Kirsty Wynn “Roast Buster” Joseph Parker has skipped town after threats and abuse were shouted at his family home.

The Herald on Sunday has spoken to his family through an intermediary, who defended Parker’s actions despite video on Facebook showing him and his friend boasting about sex with young, drunk girls.

His family is adamant he did the right thing and fronted up to police on realising the sex had gone too far.

The turning point was an encounter with a 13-year-old girl, who alleged three boys had group sex with her. But when she protested, Parker had pulled another boy off her, saying they had gone too far.

The girl had told her family and laid a police complaint. The girl’s older brother had gone to the Parker residence in West Auckland to confront him, but Parker was away.

On Parker’s return home, a family friend says, Parker’s stepfather had taken Parker to Henderson Police Station to make a formal statement about the encounter with the girl.

To complicate matters, broadcaster John Tamihere and Parker’s stepfather have known each other for years. But the source claims Tamihere had not known the stepfather was related to Parker when he conducted his now infamous radio interview with 18-year-old “Amy”, a friend of one of the Roast Buster victims.

In an opinion piece in the Herald on Sunday newspaper yesterday, Justice Minister Judith Collins gave the Radio Live hosts Tamihere and Willie Jackson a dressing down and said New Zealand needed to live up to its hard-fought reputation as being a leader in women’s rights.

“Along with that goes the right to not be abused,” writes Collins.

Despite an on-air apology on Wednesday, Tamihere and Jackson continued discussions about the subject on Thursday’s show, provoking studio guest Matthew Hooton to storm out of a live panel discussion.

Advertisers have pulled out and RadioWorks’ two broadcasters have since been gagged.

Tamihere’s stepson, Katene Durie-Doherty, is Facebook friends with several of the Roast Busters.

She’s a country singing sensation, hitting the top of plenty of charts - but Jody Direen has earned her place as a country girl with hours up in a tractor, working with animals and turning the soil on a farm just outside of Rakaia.

Now based in Wanaka, the singer released her new single, Warm, just two weeks ago, and on the first day of sales saw it top the iTunes NZ country chart, placing above hits by fellow country artists Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum.

The single held its number one position in the country chart for the following two weeks, and went on to take 14th position in the NZ Top 40 charts, and peak at 21st place on iTunes, across all genres.

She said the success was a little unexpected, but the song gave people a taste of what was to come. ‘’I try not to have expectations over things, I think it’s a healthy way to live life, so it was a lovely surprise to check the charts a couple hours after it went live on iTunes and see that it was sitting at #1 in the country charts. It was even more exciting when I noticed it climbed to #21 over all genres and a little crazy when it passed Miley Cyrus’ single Wrecking Ball.

As comfortable onstage as she is behind the wheel of a tractor, country singer Jody Direen is making headlines after two weeks at the top of the charts.

“It makes me feel very proud and excited about the future as it is only my first single release since my venture to America and the best is certainly still yet to come.’’

The single was produced in one of the world’s country music strongholds, Nashville, Tennesse, but the single was cowritten with fellow Kiwi Fiona Benefield and has its roots firmly in New Zealand soil.

She said inspiration for the single was a desire to create a song that would ‘’get people on their feet, dancing on ta-

bles, shooting back whiskey and singing at the top of their lungs’’.

Although her love of country music dates back to childhood, the 24-year-old was a relative latecomer to the country music scene, and began performing just over five years ago.

She performed several times in Mid Canterbury during her year in the district, including fronting a Young Farmers fundraising concert at the Methven Heritage Centre last year.

The young singer recently finished shooting her first mu-

sic video for the single, which is due to be released this month.

With several high profile performances coming up, including the Otago Wine & Food Festival this month, she was still hard at work finishing off her new album in between shows. ‘’The next album is a lot more personal to me and lyrically most of the songs reflect my life in some way. I think my sound for the next album is quite edgy, country rock/pop with a couple of softer numbers too ... as well as different styles of production.’’

A woman who fell 300m down a glacier in the Southern Alps last week has woken up from her coma.

Heather Rhodes, 36, was climbing with fellow Christchurch mountaineer Vaughan Snowdon and Wellington man Simon Bell last Sunday when Ms Rhodes fell 300m on the Cameron Glacier in the Arrowsmith Range.

Ms Rhodes, 36, a professional outdoor instructor, suffered head injuries and two broken legs in the fall.

She had been in a coma in Christchurch Hospital until Saturday.

Earlier this week, Mr Snowdon, 28, said as they were making their way down the glacier they heard a tumbling noise and “Heather shot past. I knew that she had fallen,” he said.

“It was distinctively the sound of a falling person, not like rocks which we had heard plenty of that day. I knew instantly that something had failed at the top.”

The trio were descending from the glacier about 6.30pm when Ms Rhodes’s anchor failed and she fell, her climbing helmet falling off as she did.

■ NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK

Time to clean up our recycling attitude

The confusion around what can be recycled and what can’t will become clear from today when Wastebusters Ashburton bands with the rest of the country for National Recycling Week.

The local recycling headquarters will be intensifying its focus this week, hosting a raft of recycling experts in the yard, holding competitions and distributing information pamphlets to lift Ashburton’s already positive outlook on recycling.

“In Ashburton the attitude is wonderful, but people are still confused about what is recycling and what has to go to the landfill. So we will have people out there helping getting loads off trailers and helping people sort through their waste,” Wastebusters manager Sharon Breakwell

said. However, Ms Breakwell said there was a long way to go.

Each year 2.5 tonnes of waste goes to the landfill, but it is estimated that 75 per cent of that could have been composted or recycled, she said.

“That goes to show we can improve, even here in Ashburton.

“This is the first time we will be taking part in this national week because in the past we just haven’t had the time to, but this is what we are all about so we decided to get on board this year,” Ms Breakwell said “You have to realise when you buy a product, you buy the waste, so you are responsible for it. The waste starts with you and it ends with you.”

Wastebusters will be taking part in National Recycling Week starting today through until Thursday.

In brief Suspicious death A person has died under suspicious circumstances in Wellington. Police were called to a residential address in Miramar shortly after 5.30pm last night. The death was described by police as “suspicious” but no further details could be released at this stage.

Divers found A search was launched yesterday for three divers missing off Kapiti Island. About 2pm the Life Flight Trust was asked by police to start a search for the divers who had not been seen since around 12.15pm.

The Westpac Helicopter responded with a Wellington Free Ambulance Paramedic onboard, and on arrival found that two of the divers had been located by the Kapiti Coastguard. The search continued for the remaining diver with local boaties providing help. The third diver was found on the beach on the western side of Kapiti Island by the Life Flight team soon afterwards.

College’s musical talent on show Ashburton College’s vast spectrum of musical talent was on show on Friday night, as musical groups from the school brought their talents all under one roof. The second Red Carpet Night with the Phoenix Chorus attracted more than 300 punters to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, featuring a full programme of musical performances, ranging from pre-1800 acts to modern day classics. With the Phoenix Chorus joining in on performances with the younger Phoenix Rising Choir (pictured), the night also saw performances from the college’s jazz and blues bands along with solo and group acts.

A man has been arrested after firing an air pistol “indiscriminately” around the upmarket Auckland suburb of Herne Bay. Police were called to Jervois Rd just after 7pm after receiving a report that the man had walked out of a dairy and started shooting.

“He was walking up the road ... firing indiscriminately. He was apprehended by uniformed staff at the scene,” said Inspector Steve Kose of northern police communications centre. It was too early to say if the man would be charged.

In brief Face shattered The blade of an angle grinder has broken and spun into a Queensland man’s face, shattering bones and injuring his eye. The man in his 30s was sharpening mower blades at Benarkin State School oval on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday morning when the angle grinder blade is believed to have broken, the RACQ CareFlight Rescue Helicopter team says.

Paramedics say the blade flew up and “shattered” his face. He was flown in a serious but stable condition to the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

Doused in petrol A man and a woman have been charged with attempted murder after two men were doused in petrol and set alight in Adelaide’s north. Police say the two men were sitting in a car at Davoren Park early on Saturday morning when the attack happened. The men were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A northern suburbs man and a woman, both 26, were charged with attempted murder and will appear in Elizabeth Magistrates Court today.

Fears typhoon killed 10,000 A super typhoon that destroyed entire towns across the Philippines is believed to have killed more than 10,000 people, authorities say, which would make it the country’s deadliest recorded natural disaster.

The horrifying new feared death toll from Super Typhoon Haiyan came as the United States pledged military help in the relief effort and as countless survivors across a huge swathe of the country remained without aid for a third day.

Ten thousand people were believed to have been killed in the worst-hit province on Leyte, regional police chief Elmer Soria

told reporters in Tacloban, the devastated provincial capital.

“We had a meeting last night with the governor and, based on the government’s estimates, initially there are 10,000 casualties (dead). About 70 to 80 per cent of the houses and structures along the typhoon’s path were destroyed,” Soria said.

The scenes in Tacloban, a city of 220,000 people, and other coastal towns were reminiscent of a tsunami aftermath, with concrete slabs the only part of many homes remaining, vehicles flipped over and power lines destroyed.

“This is destruction on a

massive scale. There are cars thrown like tumbleweed and the streets are strewn with debris,” said Sebastian Rhodes Stampa, the head of a UN disaster assessment coordination team, in Tacloban.

“The last time I saw something of this scale was in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami,” he said, referring to the 2004 disaster that claimed about 220,000 lives. Haiyan hit Leyte and the neighbouring island with maximum sustained winds of around 315km/h on Saturday, and generated waves up to three metres high that surged deep inland.

However, while Leyte was believed to have been the worst hit, the carnage extended across a 600km stretch of islands through the central Philippines.

A few dozen other deaths had been confirmed in some of these areas, but authorities admitted they were completely overwhelmed and many communities were still yet to be contacted.

“We’re still establishing command and control through logistics and communications,” military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala told AFP. - AFP

Four penguin chicks have been born at the Gold Coast theme park Sea World. Nine more eggs are expected to hatch in coming days in a major boon for Sea World’s Gentoo Penguin breeding program. Sea World penguin keeper Katrina Krygger says 14 eggs have been laid this year and while one chick didn’t make it there are high hopes there’ll be 13 more little penguins soon. “Seeing these healthy penguin chicks being born is so wonderful,” Ms Krygger said.

Olympic spacewalk Two Russian cosmonauts have taken the unlit Olympic torch on its first-ever spacewalk after stepping out of the International Space Station three months ahead of the Sochi Winter Games. Live footage aired on Russian state television on Saturday showed Oleg Kotov carrying the unlit torch in his right hand while fellow cosmonaut Sergei Ryazansky recorded the historic event using a high-tech camera.

Christmas spending Spending leading up to Christmas in Australia is poised to hit a record $40 billion, the National Retail Association says. It’s predicting a three per cent increase in sales over the next six weeks, which would take total sales to $40 billion, up from $38.8 billion in 2012. Chief executive Trevor Evans says food sales, including groceries, takeaway food and liquor, are expected to account for $20.2 billion, with discretionary items such as clothing, footwear and department store sales making up the rest. Mr Evans said politics domestically and abroad would play a part in encouraging Australians to cross the “significant” $40 billion threshold by spending an average $1700 each. “This is the first Christmas in a couple of years that we haven’t had bad news hammering us.” - AP

M

id Canterbury saw more than its fair share of luck - good and bad - during the weekend.

With two narrow escapes from disastrous incidents and a first division Lotto win, it’s fair to say the district has seen one of its more eventful weekends in recent memory.

Methven Four Square’s inaugural first division prize of $142,857, shared across seven winners, is a definite stroke of luck for the envied local ticket holder and those who are left to check their tickets will be hoping they’re still in contention when they scan their numbers today.

But the weekend also presented a different side to “luck”.

An Ashburton woman and her two young children narrowly escaped a fire unharmed; it was caused by a dodgy outdoor light fitting.

Just 24 hours later three men were involved in a serious car crash on a windy shingle road near Methven, the trio sustaining just minor injuries.

With the luxury of hindsight, many of the comments made have centred around luck, and how fortunate all victims were to escape relatively unscathed.

But look a little deeper, and luck is a word used that overshadows moments where those affected were either wellprepared or had a of lapse in concentration.

Some may say the Ashburton mother was lucky to escape the blaze with her two children, and fair enough too.

She woke seconds before her smoke alarms were activated and managed to get out with her children, but afterwards firefighters reinforced the importance of smoke alarms that, in this case, they say would have woken the family and taken them to safety.

The three shepherds involved in Zig Zag Road crash have been labelled extremely lucky to escape without serious injury but, as police say, it could have been avoidable if they drove to the conditions.

It goes to show a little care in the present can have a major bearing on outcomes in life.

The new voice of Labour

avid Cunliffe - reviled and hated by a majority of his caucus colleagues and blamed for the bitterness of last year’s Labour Party conference - now rules the roost.

Presumably, many of the “Meagre Thirty Four” - the current total of that caucus have found ways to re-consider options and personalities and decide Mr Cunliffe actually has talents they failed to notice first time round. They may also have appreciated their futures depend on such re-appraisal.

The political world is, after all, one of constant fragility and adjustment.

Rhetoric. Following the less than dynamic utterances of his brief predecessor, the hapless David Shearer, David “General” Cunliffe has chosen mostly military rhetoric with which to inspire both the faithful and those looking to him to raise the Party from the political dead into which state it has fallen these past few months.

Thus, “Five Star” David is now “waging war” on Mr Key and his cohorts and taking the battle for next year’s Treasury benches to him and them.

There will be no surrender or, I imagine, prisoners taken.

It seems to have all the makings of bloody confrontation ahead, a fight to the very last round - even “on the beaches” if necessary - no quarter asked, given or expected. Weak hearts should stay home. Some scenes may disturb.

So how did this newlycreated, pugnacious politico come across? Well, he certainly

One of these possibly skinny schemes involves the speedy - first 100 days; a near sacred period for in-coming leaders these days - creation of Kiwiassure designed particularly to help the still-struggling earthquake-ravaged homeowners of Christchurch. At once a shiver of renewed hope pulsates through the worn veins of the Garden City - as it once was - survivors.

Regret to say, it may be. The problem seems to concern the structure of this revolutionary entity. With both Mr Cunliffe himself and his finance guru, David Parker, making it clear there will be no government guarantee behind it it would seem simply to be another insurance company taking its chance/competing with the many other - private - ones we already have to choose from, most of them found wanting since 2010.

So is it actually a Clayton’s policy, the one you think you have when in fact you are no

more reliably off than you have been for many moons. Can it be the Labour hierarchy s attempting to raise morale on a wave of substantive-free rhetoric?

It has also to be mentioned, there’s a “vital” by-election pending for the new Christchurch Mayor’s long-held Labour seat from which a large number of her original supporters have been earthquake-displaced.

Feel good. Perhaps General Cunliffe and Colonel Parker are relying on the “feel good” factor to enthuse their foot soldiers on the ground and that, plus a similar vote-catching plan to solve the Christchurch housing shortage, will see them home in Christchurch East this November and in the country as a whole next.

Rest Camp and Lodges. Here, budget travellers set up their own tents, sleep in permanent tents with single beds and lighting or crash in simple lodges, with kitchens and bathrooms.

Next to the campground is a pub that grows noisy by nightfall. Across the street are tour agencies selling jet-boat excursions ($A100) and bungee jumping ($A126), and fast-food outlets serving pizza, fries and ice-cream.

The other dusty artery running through town, a few hundred metres away, is lined with more tourist shops stocked with ceramic bowls, wooden salad servers, clothing and ornaments. The souvenirs are surprisingly costly for such a poor country but are an indicator of how much this town relies on, and embraces, tourism.

covering the walls and floor of this aquatic haven. Hygiene is something you tend to ignore when roughing it in Africa; something you allow to melt away when confronted with harsh heat every day.

I arrived in the town of Victoria Falls hours before, having spent the past seven days traversing the dry heart of Botswana, to the south.

Most Westerners travel to this part of Africa to view the impressive Victoria Falls, from which the town takes its name.

The falls drop 108 metres into a narrow gorge in the Zambezi river, and can be seen from either side of the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia.

As beautiful as the waterfall is, I am more curious about the town that has sprung up around it.

s I waddle to the pool side, my pale skin aglow, the eyes of African children, teenagers and adults follow my steps.

Despite spending a week under southern Africa’s glaring sun, my skin remains ghostly.

Dorie scored its third straight win in Mid Canterbury open grade tennis on Saturday, beating Hampstead 4-2.

The top-of-the-table side’s win was set up by its top order, with its top pairing of Rhys Cromie and Luke Glendining too good for Hampstead’s Joseph Langley and Connor Brosnahan. It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Dorie duo though, both needing three sets to secure their victories in the singles ties.

Dorie number one Cromie won the first set against Langley 6-4 before dropping the second in a tie-break. In the super tie-break deciding third set, Cromie got up 10-6. It was a similar story for Glendining. He took the first set against Brosnahan 6-1, but lost the second 6-3, before bouncing back in the third-set tie break 10-6.

Cromie and Glendining combined for a 6-2 7-5 win in the doubles, while Hampstead’s lower pairing of Christal Brosnahan and Milly Young grabbed one of their side’s wins with a three set win in their doubles match against Mary-Anne Thyne and Sarah Hayman 1-6 6-4 1-0 (10-7).

Christal Brosnahan made it two wins for Hampstead with a 6-4 6-7 1-0 (11-9) win over Thyne in the number three singles, while Hayman beat Young 6-1 6-0 for Dorie’s fourth win.

In the other clash of the round Hinds proved too good for Allenton, with Allenton’s sole win coming via Neil McCann at number one, convincingly beating Tony Brosnahan 6-1 6-0.

Brosnahan and James Watt proved too good for McCann and Flynn Ness in the top doubles though, winning 6-1 7-5, while the lower doubles went the way of Hinds’ Duncan Rollinson and Charlie Stock 6-1 6-3, over Angus Rollinson and Larissa Allan.

The remainder of the singles matches all went Hinds’ way with Duncan Rollinson beating Allan 6-1 6-2, Stock beating Angus Rollinson 6-1 6-0 and Watt beating Ness in three sets 4-6 6-0 1-0 (12-12).

Tough day out on Mt Hutt track

Strong northwest winds made life difficult for riders taking part in round two of the Gravity Canterbury Series at the Mt Hutt Bike Park yesterday.

But all 75 riders taking part came through unscathed and organisers were happy to report a good day of tough racing action.

Bike Methven’s Cam Bassett said the track used yesterday was technical, and was loosely based on the track that will be used when the park hosts the Oceania Mountain Bike Championships in March.

It was a hot day for racing

on a challenging track, made tougher by the strong winds.

“It made some of the big jumps up the top a little bit sketchy,” Bassett said.

Christchurch dominated the podium finishes, but it was a man from the Czech Republic who took out the senior hardtail section – Jan Winter was the only entry.

The open men’s section saw an all-Christchurch top three finish, with Tom Matthews finishing on top, Rupert Chapman second and Tyler Brooker third.

Winning the under-19 section was Raphael Kammlein-Cutler from Dunedin, with Ethan Bur-

gess of Methven second, while under-17 was won by Corey Milne of Christchurch, with Christchurch’s Connor Sandrey second and Michael Breading of Methven in third.

The under-15 section was an all Christchurch podium too, with Nils Heiniger beating out Boaz Hebblethwaite and Max Hydes, while Hunter Paull won the under-13 section and Luke Hren was second. Both were from Christchurch.

In the masters sections, the 30-40 year old class was won by Chris Mancey of Dunedin with Canada’s Scott Fellers second, and the 40-plus class was won by Tony Holland ahead of Vaughn

Ellis, both of Christchurch.

Yesterday was round two of a three round series, with rounds one and three held on the Port Hills near Christchurch.

It was the first big day of racing at the Mt Hutt Bike Park for the season and was co-hosted by Bike Methven and the Christchurch based Gravity Club.

Next up at the Mt Hutt Bike Park is a cross country race on January 5, followed by the third round of the Christchurch Enduro Series in February and Bike Methven’s Diggler race, with the big one – the Oceania championships – taking place there from March 14-16.

The Bevan Stroud Memorial Challenge Trophy remains in the hands of the Tech Sharks after the holders narrowly beat the Tech Stags in the opening round of Mid Canterbury Cricket’s Pritchard Shield competition on Saturday.

Tech’s two sides squared off at the Ashburton Domain and chasing just 101 to win,

the Sharks got there with just one wicket in hand. The Stags struggled with the bat and only made 100 all out. Jason Morrison was the chief destroyer, picking up 5/29 off eight overs.

The Sharks’ reply started well, but a flurry of wickets brought the game within the reach of the Stags. The Sharks needed five runs and the Stags only needed one wicket, but the runs came first and the Sharks

kept hold of the trophy.

Meanwhile Coldstream started their 2013/14 campaign with a loss to Allenton by 23 runs.

The pitch was damp after a cool and wet start to the day at Lowcliffe, but that didn’t bother the Allenton batsmen, who raced to 175/9, with Jeff Naish (53) leading the charge.

Coldstream ended up all out for 152 off 37.1 overs.

At Methven, a solid opening

partnership between Methven’s Ben Payne and Davey Maw set a platform for a win for their side against Lauriston.

Payne top-scored with 56 and Maw got on 50, with Max Bullivant finishing 40 not out as Methven made 203/8 off its 45 overs after being sent in to bat.

Lauriston was slow to get going and ended up all out for 186 in the 44th over, including four run-outs.

Leonard and Hopwood were again split for the double clashes, with Leonard teaming up with Adele Orangi to beat Carol Oakley Brown and Judy Phillips in three sets while Hopwood and Michaela Rullova beat Lillee Reid-Hunt and Margot Robinson comfortably in two sets. In the singles Leonard beat Robinson 6-0 6-2 and Hopwood beat Annabel Coates 6-2 6-1.

Rare outing for eights crew

Ashburton crews featured in 19 races during yesterday’s Canterbury Pennant Rowing Regatta at Lake Hood, and produced some top results.

Ashburton rowing coach Steve Beveridge said the regatta was raced in perfect conditions, before the wind got up, and he was pleased with the results of his crews.

Among the standout per-

formers were four crews which took first placings. The men’s double of Lachie Davidson and Mark Tait won the men’s double division three by a couple of boat lengths, while Matthew Beveridge won the men’s single division one.

The women’s coxed four of Dana Logan-Leach, Sarah Hazelhurst, Fran ConnellyWhyte, Jordyn Kell and cox Maddie Evans were first in the women’s coxed four division

two race, and part of that crew then joined up with some clubmates for a rare eights race.

Ashburton hasn’t had many opportunities to race eights in the past, but the women’s one which took to the water yesterday won the women’s eight division two race. The crew was Jemma Rotch, Veronica Wall, Livvy Fleming, Georgia Lysaght, Charlotte Cox, Grace Wilson, Connelly-Whyte, Kell and cox Maddie Evans, and they

were particularly pleased to have beaten a couple of St Margaret’s crews from Christchurch, Beveridge said.

It was a full-on day on the water, with some of the Ashburton rowers featuring in up to four or five races each, but it was all experience as the season progressed.

The next regatta at Lake Hood will be the Ashburton Rowing Regatta at the end of this month.

Piutau adds magic touch for All Blacks

By GrEGor Paul The already tough question of what to do with Charles Piutau this week, has become harder again.

The young wing strengthened his claim to start against England with two flashes of magic that sneaked the All Blacks home at the Stade de France yesterday.

His solo try highlighted his speed and balance, while his round the back flip pass that set up Kieran Read’s try was evidence that he sits alongside Israel Dagg as one of the most instinctive footballers in the squad.

Surrounded by old heads it was the baby of the backline who sparked the All Blacks into life. In fact it was hard to see anyone other than Piutau being the one to change the whole dynamic of the game - not that he feels he did much.

“I passed the ball to Ben Smith and was going to go into the ruck when I saw the ball going through. I was chasing hard and wasn’t meant to kick it inside ... but just followed it,” he says. And as for the other one: “It was a tough pass but he [Kieran Read] did well.”

The argument for not playing Piutau is that he’s started

the last three tests and in the past, the selectors have been reluctant to give youngsters more than three consecutive starts.

Julian Savea had to sit out a game in Argentina next year for that reason and perhaps Piutau will be asked to do the same.

It would be a tough call to make given his contribution of late but at 22 and having carried a huge workload at the Blues, Piutau may benefit longer term from being given next week off.

Meanwhile, Steve Hansen has praised his team’s resilience in holding out a fast-finishing France.

Having weathered a tense

start to the match, his side appeared to have the victory in the bag after surging ahead through tries by Piutau and Read, only for the Tricolours to fight back. Roared on by an 80,000-strong crowd, the French had a series of scrums on the All Blacks’ line in the dying minutes but couldn’t translate their dominance in the set piece to points.

In the end, the home side conceded a penalty, which the All Blacks kicked out to receive a welcome final whistle.

They now head to England with their winning record this year still intact.

Maori grind out a win The Maori All Blacks survived a real scare against the United States yesterday, running out 29-19 victors after a fierce fight in Philadelphia.

The Eagles, buoyed by a boisterous sell-out crowd of 18,500 at PPL Park, were the equal of the visitors for much of the match, but New Zealand’s class in attack eventually told to clinch a sweep of their two-match North American tour. A pair of second-half tries from Tim Bateman put his side on top but the game remained in the balance until Luke Katene crossed with a couple minutes left. the Eagles had led 9-7 at the break.

Smeltz in doubt It’s hard to imagine - but the All Whites could take the field without Shane Smeltz and Marco Rojas on Thursday. Despite a large number of recent injury concerns, All Whites coach Ricki Herbert expects all members of his squad to be available for selection for the match against Mexico. However key men such as Rojas and Smeltz remain under a fitness cloud simply because of their lack of match play and are unlikely to be considered 90 minutes options for the Azteca.

Ferns smash Flyers Dominant all weekend, the Fast5 Ferns hammered the Australian Flyers 56-27 in last night’s finale to defend their Fast5 World Series crown. The tournament might be all in the name of fun, but the Ferns were determined to produce a brand of netball they can be proud of following a disappointing international season, in which they suffered their worst run of losses to Australia in 15 years. Ferns shooter Cathrine Latu, one of the stars in the final, said her side will feel much better heading into the off-season after the weekend’s performances.

Success for Irish Fling Irish Fling will have to overcome an awkward draw on Wednesday if she is to complete the feature sprint double at Riccarton.

The five-year-old easily won the opening leg on Saturday when she surged to victory in the Listed Yesberg Insurance Services Pegasus Stakes and will jump from gate 13 in the Gr.3 Lindauer Stewards Stakes on the second day of the carnival. “As long as she pulls up well she’ll start,” said Grant Cullen, who prepares the mare at Hastings with Guy Lowry.

Irish Fling settled just off the pace and showed an impressive turn of foot to win by a length and a-quarter going away and remain unbeaten at the 1000 metre trip, which she cut out in 56.46. - APNZ

Pike family double Although the Tony Pike and Mark Donoghue training team missed their Group One goal on Saturday there was a special moment at Te Rapa where horses prepared by the duo scored a winning double for Pike’s parents, Wayne and Vicki. The Pike owned and bred Chintz scored a comfortable win first-up from a disappointing Queensland winter campaign while Kelly O’Reilly made it two in a row for the Cambridge couple with a storming rails run from last on the home turn in the very next race. son Tony wasn’t on hand to celebrate with the couple as he was in Christchurch with well favoured Sothys 2000 Guineas hopeful Sacred Park who had excuses for his effort in finishing midfield in the Group One contest. “They were two nice wins and as always it is extra special to win for Mum and Dad” said Pike as he made his way home from Saturday’s Riccarton meeting.

Man on a mission More than 2-1/2 years after he left New Zealand, Coup Ay Tee is returning home to try to win his biggest prize in front of his owner at Riccarton. Ray Coupland sent the gelding to Chris Waller 28 starts and more than $650,000 ago and would like nothing more than to see him win the Group Two race he sponsors, the Couplands Bakeries Mile. Jason Collett has won five races including the Group Three Hawkesbury Gold Cup on Coup Ay Tee and, like the gelding, is returning to his homeland for Wednesday’s Group Two race. New Zealand’s champion apprentice in 2011-12, Collett has established himself in Sydney’s top 10 riders over the past 16 months.

On target for Sandown Anthony Cummings expects Best Case to make his presence felt in the Sandown Guineas but will wait until the autumn to step Surge Ahead up to Group company. Best Case, fourth in the Carbine Club Stakes at the Flemington carnival, will be Cummings’ only runner in Saturday’s Group Two Sandown Guineas (1600m), being held this year at Caulfield. ‘Late bloomer’ short on experience

If Jimmy Johnstone runs fourth in tomorrow’s New Zealand Trotting Cup, trainer John Hay will be ecstatic.

The five-year-old is one of the least experienced horses in the field, with just 19 starts to his credit. He’s a late bloomer, only started making his mark last year and Hay admits he’s probably a year away from hitting his peak.

His race day record is impressive – nine wins from 19 starts and lifetime earnings of $100,391.

Over the last six weeks he’s lined up three times against cup class horses and earned himself an impressive win in the Methven Cup, beating off Fly Like an Eagle, Sleepy Tripp and Four Starzzz Flash.

Three weeks later he ran

fourth in the Ashburton Flying Stakes behind Terror to Love, Franco Ledger and Sleepy Tripp and then backed that up the next week in the Kaikoura Cup, again running fourth in a pseudo cup field.

The competition will essentially be the same, but Hay believes Jimmy Johnstone will need luck on his side to come home in the money.

“He’s still pretty green, he’s not used to going these times.

We’ve got a good draw but you have to be realistic. If he runs fourth I’ll be rapt because most of these horses have that X-factor.”

In just a year Jimmy Johnstone has come a long way. 12 months ago he was having his third start in C1; today he’s lining up with the country’s best.

“He’s done a good job and we’re really happy with him.

“He’s won every second start, I’ve never really pushed him but this time next year, who knows,” Hay said.

Hay’s no newcomer to drives in the big race. He’s had two previous outings and come home second and third and he’s trained two horses that finished in the money. That doesn’t mean he won’t have a few prerace nerves, however.

“Once you’re on the track it’s just another race. I’ve got no pressure on me because I’m not driving the favourite, and that means you’re pretty relaxed.

“I’ll be giving him the best trip possible and maybe he’ll get a place.”

Heading into cup day, Hay says he has no celebrations planned just in case he scores a win on the day.

“I’ll be back home with the horse one hour after the race.”

Ashburton’s cup hopes will be riding on driver Ricky May, who will be chasing his seventh New Zealand Cup win with Terror to Love, Hay and Jimmy Johnstone and Fly Like and Eagle owned by Ashburton man Gavin Douglas, but there are plenty of other local links in several other races.

Methven trainer Carl Middleton will be on-course on cup day, with a team of trotters.

He has Pink Diamond in race six and Another Love and Tripp’s on Me in race 11.

Ben Waldron is taking two to the cup, Franco Nadal in race one and Franco Tiago in race five and Winchmore trainer Alex Hastie has one, Anton Oliver in race eight.

Ricky May, chasing his seventh New Zealand Trotting Cup has a book of 10 drives with Leo O’Reilly booked for two.

New Zealand Trotting Cup - the facts The New Zealand Trotting Cup was inaugurated in 1904.

Its first winner was Monte Carlo, a trotter, which ran the two mile race in 4:44.4.

The fastest time was recorded in 2008 by Changeover and 2009 by Monkey King, 3:56.4.

The slowest time was recorded in 1905, Birchmark, 5:17.6.

The oldest horse to win the cup was 10 year old Harold Logan in 1931.

Six four-year-olds have their names on the trophy - Lordship, 1962, Inky Lord, 1989, Il Vicolo, 1995, Christian Cullen, 1998, Mainland Banner, 2005 and Terror to Love, 2011.

Two horses have recorded three Caribbean Blaster brings some fine Australian form into tomorrow’s wins in the cup – False Step, 1958, New Zealand Trotting Club, and shouldn’t be ignored by the punters. 1959 and 1960 and Indianapolis,

1934, 1935 and 1936.

It has not rained during the running of the cup since 1962; that year mudlark Lordship beat the hot favourite Cardigan Bay. Ricky May’s New Zealand Trotting Cup winning drives:1989, Inky Lord, 1997, Iraklis, 2005, Mainland Banner 2009, Monkey King 2010, Monkey King 2012 Terror to Love May shares top spot for most winning drives with CC Devine.

This year Ashburton connections have three winning chances – driver Ricky May with Terror to Love; trainer John Hay with Jimmy Johnstone, and owner Gavin Douglas with Fly Like an Eagle.

Colt realises potential Atlante (left) may lack the experience to put the polish on his racing manners, but there’s never been any doubt about the raw talent that saw him fulfil his Group One destiny at Riccarton.

The highly-regarded colt relished the good ground to claim Saturday’s Sothys New Zealand 2000 Guineas on his first preparation with a powerful performance that overcame some wayward tendencies.

“I couldn’t steer him he was hanging so badly,” champion jockey Opie Bosson said. “If he

had run straight he would have won by five lengths.”

For Bosson it was a fifth Guineas title after previous wins aboard Danske, Buzz Lightyear, King’s Chapel and Katie Lee while for Murray Baker it represented his first Group One success at Riccarton.

Baker has long held Atlante in high regard and had nominated him for the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas.

“He had a bit of a shaky start due to the wet tracks. He needs good ground and he’s just not the same horse on a soft track.”

In brief Marsh on a roll After setting a stable record of thirty wins in the 2012/13 racing season, Cambridge based trainer Stephen Marsh’s bid to better that number this year has gathered real momentum in recent weeks with several chances to continue the winning run at Avondale today.

With eight wins so far this season, including his first stakes victory with Savour The Moment at Te Rapa on the weekend, Marsh will line-up promising gelding He Sure Is in the Rating 75 Charlie Farley’s 1400 along with maiden prospects Mezzaluna and Chipandchase earlier in the day. “I’ve got a fair bit of time for He Sure Is and while he will improve from his outing today I still expect him to be thereabouts,” said Marsh. “Chipandchase is a nice maiden who won’t stay in that grade for long and is probably my best chance for the day although I think Mezzaluna could also turn her form around after finally drawing a decent barrier after starting in the car-park in her last two runs.”

Top ride for McDonald Superstar jockey James McDonald is back in New Zealand for today’s Avondale meeting and looks a real winning prospect aboard Lucky Country in the Listed Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders Stakes. “She is a mare who deserves to get a win at the elite level after her results last season and I think she is cherry ripe for Wednesday,” said trainer Stephen Marsh. “I managed to book James about a month ago when I found out he was available for the day so she will get every chance with him in the saddle and we have our fingers crossed she can perform up to expectations on the day.”

Race fall kills jockey Queensland jockey Desiree Gill has died from injuries she received in a fall at the Sunshine Coast. Gill was taken to Nambour Hospital on Saturday in a critical condition and died on Sunday morning. The 45-year-old was an experienced rider who had spent 30 years in the industry. “Desiree was widely admired and loved for her passion for the racing industry and in particular, her commitment to developing the next generation of jockeys,” a Racing Queensland statement said. “Desiree enjoyed a distinguished riding career over 30 years which included a period of employment with Racing Queensland mentoring and educating apprentice jockeys.” Gill had won the South-East Queensland Country premiership for the past two years and rode four winners at Bundaberg on Melbourne Cup day.

Multisporter extraordinaire Richard Ussher showed his class at Lake Hood on Saturday, winning the half ironman at the South Island Sports Festival.

Ussher, a Coast to Coast legend, was just one of a number of class athletes in the day’s main event, and while he was only fifth out of the water after the swim leg, he got faster and faster as the event went on, being the quickest by far in the final leg to win by more than four minutes in the end.

Ussher finished in 3.55.33 hours, well under last year’s winning time, with ITU professional

Mike Phillips in second, finishing in 3.59.46 hours.

Methven’s Julia Grant, fresh from competing in Europe in the Ironman 70.3 circuit, was the first woman home. She was 11th overall and finished in a time of 4.35.04 hours.

The slowest competitor finished in 7.24.30 hours.

It was a full day of action at Lake Hood, with five events contested in all and 320 athletes taking part across the board, in calm and cool conditions.

The low weakens during Thursday and the high drifts away to the east, leaving a broad ridge over the country.

A hot last run of the day saw Donn McLaren take the Ashburton Club Club’s Rutherfords Road shingle sprint title out from under the nose of his brother on Saturday.

Pete McLaren led for most of

the day, until brother Donn’s final run of the day, which he completed in 1.45.68 minutes in his trusty Escort.

“He left it to his last run of the day to get the result he was looking for,” clerk of the course Shayne Adams said.

Pete McLaren was just over a

second behind in second place in his Subaru Impreza WRX, with Darcy Prendergast third in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. Twenty entries were received for the day’s racing, which organisers were impressed with given the conditions.

Adams said a damp and driz-

zly start to the day didn’t keep people away and each driver got about six turns at the course to try and get the best time of the day.

Only one car came to grief, finding itself in a big hole and had to be pulled out by a tractor.

The Ashburton Car Club’s

next event is an autocross at Wayne Muckle’s property at Staveley on Sunday.

Anyone who wants to can enter, with entries costing $25 and the event starting at 10.30am.

Johnson’s eyes firmly on the prize

BY MICHAEL BROWN The importance of Shaun Johnson getting through the rest of the World Cup unscathed was magnified after Thomas Leuluai was invalided out of the tournament, but Johnson’s presence is needed by the Kiwis for reasons other than being a key playmaker.

The 24-year-old has emerged as a genuinely good goalkicker, except for one terrible miss against Papua New Guinea on Saturday when he hit the upright from in front of the posts (he calls it his Sonny Bill moment in reference to Williams’ gaffe against Samoa when he slipped over the deadball line before dotting the ball down for a try).

He has landed 21 of 26 attempts at the World Cup for a success rate of 81 per cent. Admittedly many have been close to the sticks but he also landed sideline conversions against both France and Papua New Guinea and went a perfect eight from eight against France.

He’s now posted 50 points at the tournament, easily the most

of anyone at the World Cup he’s also scored two tries - and goalkicking could become critical in the knockout stages.

The Kiwis have others who are comfortable kicking for goal, but none in the sort of form Johnson is showing. It’s quite some improvement from earlier in the year after assuming the duties at the Warriors.

“With the kicking, it’s a confidence thing,” Johnson said.

“I’m feeling comfortable doing it now. Having that season in the NRL kicking in front of those crowds has only done me good.

“I’m hitting the ball pretty sweet at the moment. I just hope it sticks around and it’s there for the big games at the end of the tournament.”
