Fire causes knish crisis A fire at a New York factory billed as the world’s biggest maker of knishes has created nationwide shock and oy for those who can’t seem to find the Jewish treats anywhere. Kvetching has been going on at delis, diners, food carts and groceries since the six-week-long shortage began, but lovers of the square, fried, doughy pillows of pureed potatoes may not have to go without much longer. The factory promises an end to the knish crunch by Thanksgiving, which coincides with the start of Hanukkah. “Our customers ... are calling us saying they are literally searching supermarkets and stores and they’re all asking when we’ll be back,” Stacey Ziskin Gabay, one of the owners of the 92-year-old Gabila’s Knishes, which sells about 15 million knishes a year.

Suspension reversed A Catholic school that suspended its principal over serious misconduct allegations has been ordered to reverse the move by the Employment Relations Authority. Principal of Christchurch’s Our Lady of Victories School, Barbara Perry, claimed her suspension on October 11 was unjustified and “the culmination of a course of conduct designed to remove her as principal”. Now, an Employment Relations Authority (ERA) decision has ruled that she be reinstated from Monday and that mediation between the two parties is undertaken as soon as possible.

Miley strips again US singer Miley Cyrus has stripped down once again for the Real and True single by American hip hop artist Future. The Real and True video clip was released on Monday and features Cyrus and US rapper Mr Hudson. The space-themed video tells the tale of two male astronauts (Future and Mr Hudson) who discover a dead female astronaut (Cyrus) and take her back to her ship so they can revive her, according to RollingStone. com. Cyrus then comes to life, singing the chorus as the camera reveals her wearing little more than silver body paint and glitter.

For thousands of Kiwi Filipinos, typhoon Haiyan will add new meaning to the importance of sending money back home to support their families. As the Philippines mops up from the worst typhoon in its history, Filipinos living in New Zealand are facing a future that will include stronger and longer support for relatives, many of whom lost their homes in either October’s earthquake or last week’s typhoon. Mehida (Heide) Besande’s first urge was to go home when she knew her home village, Bohol, had been destroyed, but she realises the best support she and her husband can provide is by continuing to work in New Zealand and continuing to send money home. Her parents Wes and Tess Mosqueda lost their home in the earthquake and were living in a tent; when the typhoon struck they were forced to take shelter in their badly damaged home while the massive winds tore their farm and small fishing business apart. The couple, who were once counted as part of the fortunate

middle-class of home owners, now have nothing and no hope of building another home – unless their family steps in. Mrs Besande is counting the days until she can fly home to spend seven weeks helping them pull their lives back together, but she knows life for her mum and dad will never be the same. “In the Philippines, if you can afford a house you have one and my dad worked overseas so they could have a house. They’re retired now and there is no insurance there. Once your house is gone, it’s gone,” she said. In New Zealand terms, her parents’ house will cost about $50,000 to rebuild. Her village of about 6000 people has been destroyed by the double disaster but to her parents it is still home because that is their community and the place where their relatives live. For Heide and Edril Besande that will mean providing ongoing financial support for her parents. She’s not complaining; that’s the way it is in the Filipino culture. “It’s our culture that we support our family. “It’s just hard that for so many years my dad was working to

build his home and in 30 seconds it’s gone. We had plans of our own, but now they’ve all gone,” she said. She spoke to her parents shortly after the typhoon had passed and said it was huge relief knowing they while prop-

erty was destroyed, they and her wider family were okay. The couple are no strangers to the effects of an earthquake, with Christchurch’s February 2011 quake prompting the early delivery of the couple’s daughter Meja.

ASHBURTON APPEAL Mid Canterbury’s Filipino community is appealing for clean clothing and blankets in the wake of the super storm which demolished large areas of the Philippines over the weekend. There are also appeal boxes and depots at several businesses around the district, where money and food is being collected. The local Filipino community has been meeting every night since the disaster which is estimated to have killed upwards of 10,000 people and left many more homeless. Co-ordinator Neil Maui said help was needed urgently. “It’s getting colder at this time at this time of the year, and we want to get help there before Christmas,” he said. Mr Maui also wants Filipino families in need of support to make contact. “There might be families (in Mid Canterbury) who have lost family or who have not heard from them, we want to know how we can help them,” he said. Goods can be left at the Filipino dairies in Rakaia – on Railway Terrace West, and in Ashburton on Victoria Street in the Triangle, or at 17 Aitken Street.

It might be just one digit difference, but an incorrect phone number on a fridge magnet has created a huge headache for an Ashburton resident – and the Ashburton District Council. A marketing company has distributed fridge magnets to homes around the district but

when it listed the council’s phone number for animal and noise control, it made an error. Now an irate resident is fielding calls intended for the council. The correct number to call if you’re fed up with pesky pets or noisy neighbours is 307-7700. While the marketing company might be getting the blame for the wrong number, the council

admits it may have contributed to the confusion. The incorrect number was provided on the back of recent council rates invoices and the marketing company say a former council employee approved the incorrect number for use on the magnets. Embarrassed by the error, council Group Manager Business Support Paul Brake has

contacted the resident apologising for the mistake. “They have been very understanding under the circumstances and we are certainly sorry for any inconvenience this is causing them,” Mr Brake said. It might be an exercise in damage control, but the council is having the rates invoices overprinted to black out the incor-

Website uses video to tackle bullying A new website aims to tackle bullying in Mid Canterbury. Safer Ashburton District’s Think First project launched its interactive website on Monday and released its first batch of anti-bullying video clips. Project co-ordinator John Hobbs said so far the response had been really encouraging. ‘’I think it’s great – the community has got behind what we are doing and supported us,” Mr Hobbs said. “All of the different things we’re working on are to try and create a cultural shift within Mid Canterbury to raise awareness that bullying is not acceptable. It is a huge problem in this area and making excuses like ‘it’s just kids being kids’ isn’t going to change that.’’ The website, designed by NoBull, has a section for people to share their stories and connects both victims and perpetrators of bullying with locally accessible support channels. Mr Hobbs said the website brought everything together in one place. Utilising technology made the resources user friendly, but maintained appeal with younger audiences. It also catered to a variety of different learning styles, offering reading and visual material.

a project specifically for Mid Canterbury so to be able to involve the community shows how ready this district is for change,’’ Mr Hobbs said. ‘’Each step has been closely developed with a youth executive board made up of young people from all over the district.

Big spending points to Christmas boom Swipe-happy consumers are paving the way for what may be the strongest Christmas trading period in years. Statistics New Zealand data for October showed $3.6 billion in electronic card transactions spent across the core retail sector - a 1.8 per cent rise on the same month last year. There were 116 million electronic card transactions across all industries, compared with 109 million in October 2012, and a seasonally adjusted total spend of $6 billion compared

with $5.6 billion last year. Last October, retail sales fell 0.2 per cent on the previous month and totalled $3.4 billion. Retailers Association chief executive John Albertson said the figures painted a positive picture for festive-season spending. “We are starting to see a lift and certainly we would expect this now to carry right on through until the end of the year,” he said. “There’s been the indications for quite some time now that

we are starting to see a slightly more positive consumer out there and once we start to get that positive attitude from consumers, we always see spending rising as a result.” He said retailers around the country were reporting positive outlooks and he expected to see up to 3.5 per cent growth in sales this Christmas. “Certainly the anecdotal evidence in the industry is that we have got no reason to see a grim Christmas; in fact, we might actually see some posi-

tive growth. It’s not to say that it’s easy out there but it’s certainly improving.” Bank of New Zealand chief economist Tony Alexander said the figures reflected strong consumer confidence and pointed towards a better Christmas trading period than last year. “These numbers are stronger than they were a year ago,” he said. “It would be reasonable simply on the basis of these numbers for retailers to be anticipating Christmas to be better this year than last year.”

Trotting crowds behave A large, well-behaved crowd of around 20,000 has dressed up for yesterday’s New Zealand Trotting Cup in Christchurch. Forecast rain stayed away and racegoers enjoyed the carnival atmosphere in what is Canterbury’s social highlight of the year. X-Factor winner Jackie Thomas was spotted enjoying the racing, while the New Zealand Army Band performed to crowds behind the main stands. The grass embankment where the main grandstand stood on the front straight until it was demolished after being earthquake-damaged was full of high-spirited punters. People dressed as jockeys, Mexican banditos, Movemberinspired Edwardian gents, and models in full body-paint were rubbing shoulders on the lawn. Ana Blissett, 28, and Hannah Templeton, 26, were enjoying their second Cup Day together in one of the many corporate tents. They’d even had small collects at the tote. “Everyone’s in great spirits. It’s just really nice to get all dressed up,” Miss Templeton said. Jackie Thomas was impressed with the on-course action. “I’m not very good at the gambling, but I’m keen to know more,” she said. “It’s such a fun day out.” St John said one elderly male had to be rushed to hospital after collapsing, but otherwise paramedics had a quiet day. One police officer also remarked on how well-behaved the large crowd had been. “They’re all just having fun and being relatively sensible,” he said. New Zealand Cup and Show Week runs until Saturday.

Five Methven cows have been enjoying good food and lots of showers as they prepare for the Canterbury A&P Show which opens today. The milking shorthorns are from the 550-cow Red Cow Farms operated by Mark McDonald, and have been receiving the royal treatment as they gear up for the milking shorthorn section and the all breed section. Mr McDonald said the five cows had been fully clipped, and introduced to a regular washing routine before they even boarded the truck to take them to the show. This involved the cows being hosed down, and scrubbed in warm soapy water before being hosed down again. And a couple of weeks before the show they are separated from the main herd and fed more silage and hay, and less grass. This helped extend their stomach and made them look bigger and fuller. Mr McDonald said he had won the milking shorthorn sec-

While he hoped his luck might change this year, he was not holding his breath. “I guess you do it just to show off your animals, and it’s nice to have your best ones done up once a year and looking their best,” Mr McDonald said. The Red Cow Farms cows are among animals from at least 10 Mid Canterbury exhibitors at the show, which is the largest in New Zealand. Canterbury A&P Association President Mark Fleming said it had been a “busy few weeks” at the showgrounds as preparations were made, and around 100,000 people were expected to attend the three-day event. Highlights this year include performances by X Factor winner Jackie Thomas, the New Zealand Army Band and the Funky Hot Mamas; foodies’ heaven with some of the nation’s finest food and wine on offer; thrilling rides in the carnival area; close to 6000 livestock and feature competition entries; plus an amazing 3000 animals.

Mid Canterbury houses sell in 22 days BY SUE NEWMAN

Houses in the Ashburton District are being snapped up by willing buyers, with the length of time taken to sell a house in October hitting a low of just 22 days. The short time frame between a house being listed with a sales agent and finding a buyer is not far from the low of just 17 days recorded in November 2003 during the peak of the last property boom. In October the median selling price for a home in the Ashburton District was $285,000, up $18,000 on September but just below the $288,500 recorded in October last year. During October, 49 houses were sold, down from 55 in September. Over the past 10 years the Ashburton housing market has been on a roller coaster ride, hitting a high in 2002-2003 and then slumping in 2010. This year, prices and sales numbers have steadily climbed while the number of days taken to sell a home has dropped. In October 2003, 85 houses were sold, remaining on the market for an average of 21 days. The median selling price then was $145,000, a 17 per cent increase on the previous month. Over one year, from October 20022003 house prices in the Ashburton District rose by 50 per cent - $92,000 to $145,000. The market bubble was seen in the period from July 2002-May 2003 when prices rose from $97,000 to

$132,000. The slickest selling month during the red hot property boom was in November 2003 when it took an average of just 17 days to sell a house. In the five years from 1998-2003 Ashburton’s house prices moved just over 10 per cent, from $90,000 to $100,000. At the market slump in 2010, house prices dropped each month, with the worst a 6 per cent fall from September to October. The number of houses sold was correspondingly low, with just 63 changing hands over the three months from August to October. The year itself went down in history for all the wrong reasons, with just 318 houses sold. In 2011, 469 houses changed hands with the number rising to 547 in 2012. At the market peak in 2002 and 2003, more than 600 houses were changing hands each year. While Real Estate New Zealand measures its sales values in medians the midway point), Quotable Value uses average prices and puts the average sales price of a home in Ashburton now at $310,299. This puts Ashburton at the high end of growth over the past year, 7.7 per cent. In the South Island just Waimakariri, Selwyn and most areas of Christchurch City have seen higher levels of growth in values. Christchurch values are still significantly above this time last year, at 11.8 per cent above last year and 2.7 per cent up over the past three months.

Child neglected A Wairarapa woman who took days to seek help for her 3-yearold daughter’s broken leg has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison. Terri Cheire Pickering, 25, was charged with neglect after doctors found her daughter’s leg was so badly broken that bones could be seen through the wound. Extra support and training given to Mid Canterbury schools to ensure hundreds of school staff do not spend another Christmas worrying about money are being met with mixed reaction. Roadshow seminars, training websites, hand books and personal calls from Ministry of Education staff are all part of a plan to ensure school staff are not affected by the end and start-of-year payroll data en-

try process that left many Mid Canterbury school staff out of pocket over Christmas and New Year last time round. Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president and Longbeach School principal Neil Simons said at a recent seminar 20 local school payroll staff turned out to learn about the online data entry before the December 18 deadline. Entering end and start-ofyear data can be a complex process, which included submitting

information about coming and going staff, identifying those who were not to be paid over the summer break and changes in hours for some part-time workers The training is part of a $6 million package the Government has piled on top of the mounting Novopay repair bill to reduce the potential for another disastrous pay period. “For me I think it’s been really good, you can see the ministry is working really hard to make

sure the end-of-year process goes well.” However, Mr Simons stopped short of saying he felt confident about the end-of-year pay periods going smoothly “because this is Novopay”. “I will wait until school is back next year before I say “ok that went well”, last year we came back to school and had to pick up all the pieces.” Allenton School administrator Daphne Hinton said she and fellow payroll staff member An-

nmarie McCloy had limited access to the training because the ministry said they had already accessed Novopay support, which Mrs Hinton said was unrelated. With the training they were allowed to access, she said they had to do it in their own time to get up to speed. She felt “apprehensive” about Christmas pay periods going smoothly for all staff because she the training did not go far enough.

Ashburton’s newest GP is no stranger to the town. Emma Dyer (nee Andrew) has joined the team at the Tinwald Medical Centre on a part-time basis, having recently moved back to the town where she did the majority of her schooling. The 2001 dux of Ashburton College has moved back to Ashburton from Hamilton, to be closer to her family and she has brought family of her own with her – husband of three years Steven, and nine-month-old son Samuel. She’s excited to be back in familiar surroundings, working in a job she always knew she wanted to do. Dr Andrew (she practises under her maiden name) moved to New Zealand from Zimbabwe when she was just 11. Her dad, Howard, was drawn here for work and came out to find a place for his family to live – he liked Ashburton and all these years later they’re still happy here. For Dr Andrew and her young family, the lifestyle Ashburton

offered was just one of the incentives to come back here to work. “I always wanted to be a GP since I started my medical training. There’s the variety of medicine that you come across, you get to see people again and again, and it’s good for family life,” she said. Dr Andrew knew from the time she came to New Zealand that she wanted to be a doctor or a vet, and after taking a year off after finishing school to work as an au pair in America, she knew that medicine was her future. “In that year I realised I really did want to do medicine so I was more determined when I came back to study,” she said. Now she’s helping to ease a shortage of GPs in Mid Canterbury and struggles to understand why young doctors shy away from towns like Ashburton. “I think they don’t know what a small town has to offer. I think they are afraid they will get trapped in a small place with nothing to do,” Dr Andrew said. But she knows that’s not the case.

New search finds nothing The first day of a new privately-funded search for the missing yacht Nina has failed to find anything. New JP sworn in Westerfield farmer Alistair Morrison (right) is the latest recruit to the Ashburton Justice of the Peace Association. Mr Morrison was sworn in at a special sitting of the Ashburton District Court by Judge Joanna Maze on Monday, becoming the 62nd JP currently serving the district. The ceremony was attended by family members, and a number of JPs. President of Ashburton association Don Smyth welcomed Mr Morrison to the fold, and spoke of his involvement with the community over many years. Mr Morrison has a long association with rugby and the development of irrigation in Mid Canterbury. He was elected chairman of the Valetta Irrigation Cooperative Society board in 2003, and retained the position in a paid capacity when the society became a company in 2011. Mr Morrison has also served on the Mayfield Memorial Hall and Reserve Board. “He will be a welcome asset to our volunteer JP Service in Ashburton,” Mr Smyth said. Within the ranks of the Ashburton association, six JPs perform judicial services, sitting in court to hear minor traffic charges, liquor prosecutions, and bail and remand hearings. Another six can issue warrants to the police and other agencies as required for search or surveillance exercises and the rest witness documents and perform ministerial work within the community. Putting science to the test During term 3, every student at Ashburton Intermediate completed a science fair investigation. There were many different topic choices that had been tested, which varied from environment investigations to mould and jelly setting. The top few investigations got an orange sticker placed on the title, this meant that Mrs Jemmett was to judge them for the Timaru Sanford Science Fair. Three students, Jessie, Glen and Caleb, from 8/3 were selected to go to the Timaru

Sanford Science Fair 2013 on Wednesday, September 11. Caleb couldn’t go due to the wind the night before. Approximately 200 people from Mid-South Canterbury and North Otago participated. Fifteen students from Ashburton Intermediate received a prize. Trans-Tasman challengers drop in On October 17, 2013, Ashburton Intermediate School dressed up as their favourite sports star to raise money for the Halberg Foundation’s 50th anniversary, which is to help fundraise for people playing sports with disabilities. Also raising money were two teams of nine from New Zealand and Australia who competed in a race around New Zealand. The teams had to bike, run and row more than 1300km in five gruelling days. In the New Zealand team were Joseph Sullivan, Danny McBride, Blair Tuke, Nathan

Smith, Nathan Cohen, Alison Shank, James McOnie, Marc Ellis and Gemma Flyn. The Australian team included:

Malcolm Puyhage, Dan Noonan, Corey Oliver, Jason Roberts, Kate Hollywood, Shane Kelly, Andrew Reid, Wendell Sailor and Laurie Daley. Ex-All Black and now commentator for rugby, Marc Ellis, and ex-rugby league star, now State of Origin New South Wales Coach Laurie Daley visited AIS to see the two chosen people from each class with the best sports costumes. Year 8 formal dance The Year 8 classes are presently practising for our Year 8 formal dance held in the last week of school. We are learning to waltz, do a disco dance and several folk dances. Along with learning the dance steps we are also learning the etiquette used when participating in social dance. Megan White 8/1

South Island Basketball Champions Every second year in the South Island there is an indoor tournament for all indoor sports. One of those sports is basketball. The Ashburton Intermediate basketball team consisted of 10 players: William Hollings, Mitchell Prendergast, Fletcher Arnold, Bailey O’Donnell, Jayden Fuller, Eiman De Ocampo, Scott Hay, Liam McCormick, Te Maiharoa Waaka and Fotu Hala. We put in some hard work before the tournament and our performance reflected that as we went unbeaten for the entire two-day tournament.

During the first day we won all games comfortably, with the closest result still being a 12 point win. However, the second day was a bit closer. We were down two players for the first half of the day due to high school entry exam requirements. However, we battled through and still comfortably won our two games. This tournament was decided on group points rather than a play-off format and at one point it was looking like it might be a show-down between us and Cobham Intermediate who were also unbeaten.

Fortunately for us Cobham lost its second to last game meaning all we had to do was remain unbeaten and the tournament was ours and as fate would have it our final game was against Cobham. This was a much tougher encounter and through utter determination we managed to come out on top by only 4 points. This was a great experience and we would like to make a special thanks to our parent helpers Bronwyn Arnold and Keryn O’Donnell and our coach Mr Gleason. William Hollings and Mitchell Prendergast

n the ongoing Roast Busters saga, radio talkback hosts Willie Jackson and John Tamihere have been forced to fall on their swords. The pair, who inappropriately grilled a young girl on a show last week, will be off the airways for at least the rest of the year. It’s ironical that on the eve of the White Ribbon campaign – when many men are speaking out about changing the nation’s attitudes about violence toward women, these two entered into the game of victim blaming. During the controversial show a teenager spoke about a friend who was sexually assaulted by the so-called Roast Busters crew, who are accused of stupefying and sexually assaulting young girls then bragging online. Willie and JT dismissed the boys’ behaviour as just “a bit of mischief ” then questioned the behaviour of the victims, going so far as to ask Amy whether she was a virgin. There is no place in our society for turning the table on victims. Whatever these girls, some reportedly as young as 13, were wearing, or had drunk – there is no excuse for rape. It was encouraging to see advertisers’ prompt decision to boycott the show, forcing these “lads” off air. But as long as the “bro culture” is alive and well, and men – regardless of their age, continue to protect each other there is little chance of changing attitudes or behaviour. The father of 17-year-old murder victim Emily Longley has added his voice to the White Ribbon campaign, saying the code of silence among Elliot Turner’s friends contributed to her death. He has asked the Roast Busters’ mates to confront them and call time on their vindictive, demeaning attitudes towards women. We should all take heed of his message – violence toward women is a national shame, and we all have a part to play in stopping it.

Banks test defences Britain’s banks and financial firms are taking part in a major cyber “war game” exercise to test their defences against the mounting threat of online attack. The simulation - dubbed Waking Shark II - is set to be one of the largest of its kind in the world, involving teams of staff from dozens of banks and other City institutions and overseen by officials from the Bank of England, the Treasury and Financial Conduct Authority. Credit Suisse is understood to have designed a scenario that will mimic a real-time threat, with firms hit by a barrage of announcements and attacks on computer systems, also involving social media. - PA

Truck crash kills 29 At least 29 people have died in a collision between a bus and a truck in northeastern South Africa, with the accident once again highlighting the issue of poor road safety in the country, government officials say. Scores of people were injured in the accident, which happened on a major transport route in Mpumalanga province late Monday. The bus collided with a truck near the town of Kwaggafontein, about 100 kilometres east of capital Pretoria. - DPA

Aid packages rush in International aid is pouring in for the Philippines as authorities step up efforts to reach survivors driven to looting after one of the world’s strongest typhoons devastated their towns. About $A100 million in emergency assistance has been pledged so far, and more is on its way as the country struggles with the destruction from Typhoon Haiyan, which killed at least 1774 people. Australia is sending a 36-member medical team, and equipment and supplies with the capacity to treat up to 4000 patients over a two-week period in a temporary 50-bed hospital, Health Minister Peter Dutton said. This was in addition to $A10 million in disaster relief announced on Monday by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. NSW has also pledged $A500,000 in aid. US Defense Secretary Chuck

Hagel has ordered the aircraft carrier USS George Washington and other American ships to head to the Philippines. The carrier, which has 5000 sailors and more than 80 aircraft aboard, was expected to arrive from Hong Kong within two days. It would be accompanied by the cruisers USS Antietam and USS Cowpens, and the destroyer USS Mustin while the USS Lassen, also a destroyer, was also on the way. A supply ship, the USNS Charles Drew, was already under way. The carrier group has helicopters while the US Marine Corps was sending four MV22B Ospreys and three KC-130J Hercules planes to the disaster zone. The US had earlier said it was providing $US20 million ($A21.3 million) in humanitarian aid as well as additional

troops - it has 90 soldiers on the ground at present. The United Nations had allocated $US25 million in emergency relief fund and $US2 million from the UN World Food Program. UNICEF was airlifting 66 tons of emergency supplies from Copenhagen including water purification systems, storage equipment and sanitation supplies. Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron pledged STG10 million ($A17.17 million) worth of humanitarian aid, and was deploying a Royal Navy warship and Royal Air Force military transport aircraft to help in relief efforts. The European Union, which already sent 3 million euros ($A4.33m) for relief, was allocating another 10 million euros for rehabilitation efforts, Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said in Manila yesterday.

“There is a need to increase humanitarian support for the operations in the affected areas,” he said. “The extent of the damage is not fully known, but what we clearly know is that they are in a state of calamity.” Piebalgs said an EU humanitarian assistance team has been trying to send help to areas not yet reached by aid agencies, but access has been impossible. “We don’t know at this stage what the needs will be, it can take weeks or months, but I think the 10 million euros is a rather solid support at this stage,” he added. Germany said early yesterday that it would increase its aid to the typhoon-stricken Philippines to 1 million euros, up from the 500,000 euros announced at the weekend. China had pledged $US100,000, Japan $US10 million, and Taiwan, $US200,000. - AAP/DPA

Queensland’s anti-bikie laws are set to be changed again after a loophole was found allowing bikies who quit gangs to get bail. The controversial laws call for “a person (who)is a participant” in an outlaw gang to be denied bail. However, bikies who have quit can still be granted bail. AttorneyGeneral Jarrod Bleijie wants to change the wording to say “is or was a participant” and will put the amendment to parliament next week. Critics say that the laws are already meeting their intended aim of dismantling gangs, so they don’t need to be changed. - AAP

Mars mission on track India’s Mars spacecraft has been “successfully” raised into a higher orbit around Earth after a brief engine failure during an earlier attempt, the space agency says. The Mars Orbiter Mission, which blasted off on November 5 for a 11-month trip to the Red Planet, is being launched on its way via an unusual “slingshot” method for interplanetary journeys. Lacking a large enough rocket to blast directly out of Earth’s atmosphere and gravitational pull, the Indian spacecraft is orbiting Earth until the end of the month while building up enough velocity to break free. - AFP

Croc bites golfer A British man is recovering after being attacked by a crocodile in Mexico while playing golf with friends. Dougie Thompson told the Daily Mirror he had stepped into a bunker to take a shot when the reptile sprang from nearby undergrowth and clamped down on his leg. It was only after friends beat the animal with golf clubs and drove over it in a golf buggy that it released its grip, allowing Thompson to be pulled to safety. “I couldn’t feel pain, I was in total shock. It was like a big toy, big black eyes looking at me,” he said.

It is the second year that small Mid Canterbury earthmoving business Grant Hood Contracting has beaten far larger businesses across Canterbury to take home a regional environmental award, but that doesn’t mean it was an easy win for the local contractors. Up against around 30 other Canterbury projects, including multi-million dollar projects such as the construction of the Christchurch Southern Motorway, the Ashburton-based business impressed the New Zealand Contractors Federation judges with their work constructing wetlands in Lincoln. Simply completing the Selwyn District Council wetlands project was a triumph for the local contractors, who had to tackle bad weather, a tight timeframe and strict consents to finish the project last year. For owners Grant and Carolyn Hood and the 12 employees of the business, taking home the New Zealand Contractors Federation regional environment award was simply the icing on the cake.

The project was a challenging one, constructing 16 hectares of wetlands in Lincoln, designed to retain storm water in the district. It involved building a weir and structures to control water flow, managing earthworks and building access roads and footpaths through the area. Working with waterways that fed Lake Ellesmere, they had to carefully monitor water quality and control sediment so as not to disturb the aquatic environment and passage of fish through the waterways. If that wasn’t challenging enough, the company had just nine weeks to complete all the earthworks and construction, before Winter set in and all work around the waterways had to stop. Grant Hood operations manager Michael Chivers said that the company did a lot more than simply move earth around. “When Grant Hood do earthworks today, we’re thinking about our grandchildren tomorrow.” He said that on complicated projects it was worth going the extra mile to get it right at the start and keep it right.

The win has qualified the local business to enter the NZ Contractors Federation national awards next year, but he said that a decision on whether or not to enter was yet to be made.

Clearing the air on cooking fish F or a country that’s surrounded by the ocean, New Zealanders eat far less seafood than we could – or should. Some of that has to do with price, but it also has something to do with the image of seafood being difficult to cook. If we’re spending a decent amount of money on fish or shellfish, then we want to guarantee we can turn it into a tasty, high quality meal. To demystify the art of cooking seafood, The Auckland Seafood School has put together a comprehensive cook book that covers a wide range of fish and shellfish. The Complete New Zealand Seafood Cookbook contains more than 250 recipes from top New Zealand chefs accompanied by photos by Sean Shadbolt. This book is about more than recipes. It contains expert advice on finding a suitable recipe for individual fish species, information on how to handle and store fish and hints on a range of cooking techniques.

Barbecue chilli squid with Asian spices and green beans 60ml peanut oil 1 lge onion, sliced 2 cloves garlic crushed 2cm piece fresh ginger, chopped 20g palm sugar 1T chopped fresh coriander 1T chopped fresh mint 2t fish sauce

■ Heat one third of the oil with onion and garlic ■ Cook slowly for 10 mins to soften the onion ■ Add remaining sauce ingredients (except salt and pepper) ■ Reduce liquid a little to sauce consistency ■ Season to taste ■ In bowl mix squid with half the remaining peanut oil and season ■ Chargrill squid for 3 mins, taking care not to overcook ■ Toss beans through the rest of the oil ■ Cook on grill for a few minutes, seasoning to taste ■ To serve, place sauce in a bowl and top with squid and beans ■ Sprinkle with peanuts.

■ Thinly slice red onion and place in non-reactive bowl ■ Sprinkle with salt, sumac, and lemon juice ■ Set side until ready to assemble burgers ■ Preheat oven grill to 220 degrees ■ Crush garlic with a little salt

■ Transfer garlic puree to small bowl ■ Add egg yolk and mustard ■ Beat with a whisk until pale and frothy ■ Slowly add olive oil drop by drop, not adding more until the previous addition is fully incorporated ■ When all of the oil is added and

Ricky May has written himself into New Zealand harness racing history, and the modest Methven man can’t wipe the grin off his face. After driving his seventh New Zealand Trotting Cup win with Terror To Love, May was still coming to terms with the drive, the record and the endless accolades. Hours after the race he was still smiling and people were still wanting to shake his hand but all May wanted was to do was sit down with a cold beer. “I’ve just got to the Casino with the owners and I’ve only had one beer. “The phone’s been ringing off the hook and I haven’t been answering it,” he said. As he celebrated with owner Terry McDonald, trainers Graham and Paul Court and his family, May said the win was probably the greatest moment of his harness racing career, one he’d savour for life. “To be fair though, it hasn’t really sunk in yet,” he said. He shared the winning moment with wife Judy and the couple’s two sons Tim and Phillip. They missed out on cup day last year because they were too busy on the farm; this year May said he was delighted they could share the moment. “I was rapt to have them there,” he said. His winning drive also earned Terror To Love a three-peat win in the New Zealand Trotting

Cup, but May was quick to dismiss his own efforts and praise the horse. He might have broken the cup drivers’ record for the most wins, but he reckoned it was Terror To Love who did all the work. It was a win that with any other horse would never have happened, he said. Terror to Love broke at the start, lost 30 metres and settled at the back of the field before May got the horse’s mind back on the job. “He made a proper balls up at the start and I don’t know why, but what he did after that was fantastic.” His run from last to first was nothing short of magnificent, he said. “It wasn’t looking too flash there at the start. I didn’t think the race was over but I thought he’d struggle, to be fair.” When the pair won, May said he was almost in shock. The title harness racing legend doesn’t sit easily with him; the hard work is done by the trainers and the horse himself, that’s what gets a horse to the cup, he said. If May had been looking for omens in the lead up to the main race, they weren’t flash. With seven drives booked, he could have safely assumed he’d be in the money with at least half. It wasn’t to be; he’d earned himself little more than grocery money and a bit of small change. “It was looking pretty dark there,” he said. His race record before the cup

It was a win that rewarded his supporters - $60.10 for a win and $12.10 for a place. May went into yesterday’s New Zealand Cup knowing he would be in for the toughest challenge in his racing career.

A three-peat for any horse was a big ask; seven wins an even tougher ask for any driver. “It’s not as easy as people think; horses don’t make the cup field without being damned good,” he said. Like all good horsemen, for May, cup day wasn’t over when the big one was won. He had two more drives on

his card, but neither were dollar earners. With cup day over and last night’s celebrations put to bed, today will be just another day for May, working his own horses early in the morning and then a full day of farm work. “You just go home from this and then carry on as usual,” he said.

Fieldes’ only concern is another poor gate – Ginner Hart has drawn widest of all – but he expected a fast early pace to break the field up from the barrier. “The draw is the only problem and last year we drew one from the outside,” he said. “He needs to get across and get some cover and then he can let down that last bit.” Fieldes travelled south yesterday from his Wanganui base with Neil Connors and his Group 2 Coupland’s Bakeries

Otaki trainer Rachel Frost believes Captain Kirk can prove he’s more than an out and out sprinter this time around. She produced the sixyear-old for a triumphant return to racing in yesterday’s Inghams Handicap at Awapuni where he made the play in front and defied his rivals in the run home. “He doesn’t have to lead and if something with a lot of pace can cross him and he could trail I think he can run out a mile quite easily,” Frost said. “It’s just a matter of finding the right race for him. I tried last time, but there were just no races and the tracks were getting wet and he was at the end of it and getting tired.” Captain Kirk has now won seven of his 19 starts and in his only appearance beyond 1200 metres he finished runner-up behind Fazzle over 1400 metres.

Mile prospect Tyne Cot and race rival Scapolo, trained by Kevin Myers, was also on the truck. Both horses look strong chances in the feature mile with Tyne Cot, fourth in last year’s Group 1 Easter Handicap, a last-start third at Hawera after a trial win. Scapolo ran third behind Historian from an outside draw in the Group 3 Sprint Sprint at Hastings before scoring a runaway open win at Otaki. - APNZ

In brief Security a concern As the All Whites enter Mexico, there are serious security concerns over what could unfold over the next 72 hours, with some players privately questioning if New Zealand Football has done enough to ensure their safety. The last time the All Whites played Mexico a large rock was thrown through their bus window after the match, and their footballs were stolen at a team training session. That was in Denver, not Mexico City and the shattered window came as the team left the stadium after a 3-0 loss. It is uncertain what will happen but one thing is for sure; the All Whites will be deep in enemy territory. Privately, several players wonder if NZF has done enough security-wise - “ultimately it is their responsibility if things go wrong there,” said one senior player. - HOS

Aussies conﬁdent Statistics may have not been kind to the Australian cricket team of late but they are exuding something that can’t be measured ahead of the Ashes series confidence. But allrounder Shane Watson’s dodgy hamstring has not stopped Australia regaining their strut before the first Test starts at the Gabba on November 21. Stephenson scored 13 points, passed off a personal-best 12 assists and grabbed 11 rebounds for Indiana, who improved to 8-0, the best start in team history and the last unbeaten record in the NBA this season. Early clash likely Netball heavyweights Australia and New Zealand could clash as early as the opening game of the 2015 World Cup in Sydney, as organisers aim to increase the amount of competitive games under a new format. The pool stages of past tournaments have been marked by lopsided blowouts, with the handful of top tier nations not meeting until the semi-finals. While 16 nations will again be divided into four pools of four, the top ranked two teams in the world will play in the same group. All Whites into the cauldron BY MICHAEL BURGESS Welcome to footballing hell. The Azteca Stadium, where the All Whites face Mexico tomorrow, is an arena every footballer wants to play in but also a place of physical and mental suffering. It’s not just the altitude, though the 2300 metre elevation of the stadium makes it harder to breathe - and even think - as lungs gasp and muscles ache, especially if you are constantly chasing the ball. The All Whites are playing in the early afternoon (2.30pm local time), when the air pollution is at its worst. It will be hot, with a cacophony of noise that few stadiums can match. “It’s a unique experience - and not often in a good way,” says former All White Simon Elliott, one of the few New Zealanders to have experienced the Azteca. “The altitude, combined with the smog, is extremely tough. You feel like you are swimming a little bit or going through quicksand. “That is why keeping the ball is so important; you don’t want to be doing a lot of work without the ball.” During his stint at LA Galaxy (1999-2003) Elliott played

several times in Mexico City in regional competitions. “It’s the whole package,” says Elliott. “The heat, the noise, the smog, the crowd .. it’s a great place to play but you can suffer.” On Thursday morning the All Whites will prepare in changing rooms that date from the 1960s. Across the corridor they will hear the Mexicans, psyching themselves up with shouts of “Vamos! Vamos! Vamos! (Let’s go, Come on!)” then walk down a tunnel before emerging into the arena. “It’s a cauldron,” says Elliott. “You come out from underneath and you are hit by a sea of fans ... the smell, the sweat and the noise. At least New Zealand is a bit of an unknown quantity. “If it was the USA playing Mexico there would be potential for a riot.” Former American players have described seeing effigies of players burning before kick off in the grandstands. They talk about basketball size balls of straw being set alight and thrown from the stands, as well as bags filled with urine, batteries, coins and other projectiles.

There is no real danger - the field is a large distance from the stands and such incidents may belong more to another time (the 1980s), or be more typical of the intense cross border rivalry. But with what is at stake, intimidation - both on the field and from the stands - won’t be in short supply. “If you have not played at Azteca, there is nothing

you can be told that can prepare you for it,” former American international Cobi Jones told ESPN. “There is no way to counter the altitude, no matter how fit you are. You need to keep it simple and smart. “The Mexicans will press you. They love to attack players who have not been there, especially at the back. They also know there is simply nothing like [the Azteca].” Communication will be near impossible at times, especially for defenders - it is difficult to hear anything from a teammate more than 20 metres away. Teams there rely on established defensive combinations, which the All Whites sans Ryan Nelsen and Winston Reid don’t really have. “It will be deafening,” says All Whites goal keeper Glen Moss. “We need to make sure everything is nailed down, everyone knows their jobs and what to do in different scenarios so we don’t have to rely on that communication aspect.” - HOS

Dagg suffering a dearth of test tries BY PATRICK MCKENDRY For an outside back in good form, Israel Dagg is having a tough time getting over the opposition’s try line. The All Blacks fullback, known for his brilliant counterattacking and uncanny sense of being in the right place at the right time, has not scored a test try all year. His last five-pointer came against Scotland at Murrayfield almost exactly 12 months ago a run of 13 tests without a try. His last points came via a penalty against Australia in Wellington in August. For a man who announced himself on the world stage with two brilliant tries in two tests against South Africa in 2010, it’s a curious position to be in. Asked about it in London ahead of his side’s showdown against England at Twickenham on Sunday morning, Dagg denied he was frustrated by his inability to dot down. “I’ve just got to do my job and if I’m giving that final pass to

the wingers and they’re scoring tries then that’s as good as scoring in my eyes,” he said. “I might get one this week, you never know. “I nearly scored one in the Aussie game but I tripped up and gave it to Sam Cane. It’s just one of those things, I just have to nail my role.” Dagg was one of the best backs on the field in that third Bledisloe Cup test against Australian in Dunedin. After a slow start to the year with the Crusaders, Dagg has progressed nicely to the point where he is one of the most consistent operators for the national team. His ability to see space means will always be a conduit for his wings. Julian Savea, like Cane, also reaped the benefits of a Dagg pass in Dunedin. Having by-passed the test against Japan in Tokyo, he was good against France on a night where the All Blacks struggled to get their attacking rhythm going. As backs coach Ian Foster said yesterday, the All Blacks

got it mostly right but couldn’t deliver the knockout blow. Foster said the fitness of both Savea, who has recovered from the flu which ruled him out of the Paris test, and Cory Jane, who played his first test of the year in that match, must be taken into account to determine who will join Dagg in the back three. It appears Charles Piutau has cemented one wing spot. Savea must be considered a good chance to play on the other. The progress of centre Ben Smith, meanwhile, continues to satisfy Foster. “He has his best game at centre,” he said of Smith against France. “There’s probably a couple of things that he’s still working on, particularly his support lines after line breaks... but we’re really pleased with him.” Dagg’s drought: Tests: 36. Its all true of course but no matter how Steve Hansen phrases it, this is a defining week for him as All Blacks head coach. Setting aside last year’s draw against Australia in Sydney, the loss to England in December is the only blemish on an outstanding record since Hansen replaced Graham Henry after the 2011 World Cup. Rather than being the metaphorical pebble under the beach towel over the New Zealand summer, that record defeat would have been a rock-strewn beach for the All Blacks coach. His French counterpart Philippe Saint-Andre spoke about what is otherwise a supremely consistent string of results in wondrous tones minutes after his team pushed the All Blacks all the way in a 26-19 defeat in Paris at the weekend, saying: “Since the World Cup I think they’ve played 31 games, won 29, drew one, lost one, so that must be the best record in the history of rugby.” It is a record that the majority of other international coaches can only dream about, not least England’s Stuart Lancaster, whose stated aim is to take his team to No2 on the world rankings over South Africa. For Hansen, that France battle was probably the ideal build-up for the showdown at Twickenham, for it exposed the All Blacks once again to the realities of Northern Hemisphere rugby. It was several steps up

from the Japanese exercise in Tokyo and not only because of the challenge up front. The importance of making first-up tackles will also be driven home this week, as will coping with playing in front of what will be another huge crowd of about 80,000. And, although Hansen has an abundance of talent on the wings with the emergence of Charles Piutau, and the return from injury and illness of Cory Jane and Julian Savea respectively, he doesn’t have as many options at centre. He has committed himself to playing Ben Smith there in the absence of Conrad Smith, but Wesley Fofana and Florian Fritz caused the

Highlanders player and midfield partner Ma’a Nonu problems in Paris. The forward pack and Aaron Smith/Dan Carter axis virtually picks itself but there remains a feeling that the midfield is in a state of flux. For the All Blacks, it’s probably a good thing the England powerhouse Manu Tuilagi is injured, but a nagging sense of anxiety could be just what they need to make what they hope will be an emphatic statement. “It’s not about me, it’s about all of us. “The All Blacks are way bigger than one person so the day I starting thinking about myself will be the day I’m not here any more.” Hansen’s own statement after the team arrived in London was designed to deflect attention but the spotlight on him is likely to shine brighter with every day that passes this week. There is a record at stake a victory will put his team on the brink of ending the year unbeaten with a test against Ireland to come - and a very painful defeat to put right. - APNZ

The ridge recedes to the North Island on Friday, and a northwest flow develops over southern New Zealand as a front approaches Fiordland. The front moves north over the country and weakens during the weekend, followed by a southwesterly flow.
