THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Ashburton Mid Canterbury Filipinos organise man nabs relief concert burglar in act BY MYLES HUME

MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A Princes Street resident helped bring a spate of burglaries to an end when he blocked a teenage thief in his garage and called police last week. The 15-year-old offender was arrested by Ashburton police at the address and has since moved to Dunedin under the care of Child Youth and Family after playing a role in a major spike in burglaries in the Ashburton area during the past two to three weeks. Another 15-year-old boy and his 14-year-old female associate - not linked with the first offender – were also arrested for a string of home burglaries. Acting Senior Sergeant Tristan Murray yesterday praised the work of his staff and the public for information they passed on to bring the youth offenders down, particularly the Netherby resident who stumbled upon a 15-year-old boy in his home. “We were really impressed with him, he kept him in his

garage and called police immediately. We were able to come round and apprehend the offender,” Mr Murray said. The teenager will appear before the Youth Court on nine burglary charges, five thefts from cars, possession of an instrument to burgle and four fraud matters. The 15 and 14-year-old duo were nabbed after police received reports about the teens trying to sell goods, which were later found to be stolen. Mr Murray said when he first came to Ashburton three weeks ago for a short-term role, police were seeing up to four burglaries a day, but since the arrests that had “dramatically dropped” to one attempted burglary this week. Mr Murray said the public can feel assured after police caught the youth offenders, but urged them to remain vigilant. “We will be continuing to do patrols where the burglars have offended to provide residents with reassurance in those areas.”

Local Filipinos have scrapped their traditional Christmas party and opted instead for a charity concert to support their ravaged FULL STORY P3 country.

Keeping tabs on tombs

Johannesburg will allow the installation of security devices on tombstones from next year in a bid to curb theft. Alan Buff, who oversees the city’s cemeteries, said on Wednesday that a deal has been entered into with a private company that will install microchip transmitters into tombstones. The system is designed to detect movement and trigger off sirens. “Then we will be able to immediately locate the area where a tombstone has been moved and we will be able to track it down,” Buff said. An SMS will be sent to the family of the deceased to notify them of any tampering with the tombstone. The system will detect even the slightest of movements, such as the shifting of a vase.

Vacuum sucks up loot Thieves in Salerno in southern Italy have come up with a novel way of stealing money from an automatic petrol station cash register, using a vacuum cleaner to suck the notes out. The thieves made a hole in the cash register in the town of Sala Consilina before sucking out 3000 ($A4,367) in cash, according to the Corriere del Mezzogiorno daily. The automatic alarm system was set off but by the time the police arrived at the crime scene, the only thing left was the vacuum cleaner, the newspaper said.

After tracking down a small alligator skulking in a baggage claim area at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, authorities are now hunting for its travelling companion. The Chicago Transit Authority has released a series of images showing a woman who they believe rode to the airport on a train with the 600mm-long gator in the early morning hours of November. 1. A security camera captured the woman petting her little friend on her knee as she talked on her cellphone.

Turner turns back on US Rock and soul music diva Tina Turner, who’s lived in Switzerland for nearly two decades, is giving up her US citizenship, the Washington Post reports. Citing a report from the US embassy in Bern, it said Turner, 73, signed a statement to relinquish her US citizenship at the embassy in October. She married German record producer Erwin Bach in July, three months after taking Swiss citizenship. Relinquishment is simpler than renouncing US citizenship - and entails no tax or other penalties. The United States is one of the few countries that requires its citizens who live permanently abroad to declare and pay income tax.

Warhol painting record

Letters to the Editor editor@theguardian.co.nz

An Andy Warhol painting sold at a New York City auction has set a sales record for works by the famed pop artist. Warhol’s Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) sold for $US105 million ($A112.86 million), including the buyer’s premium. It had been expected to fetch as much as $80 million, Sotheby’s said. The buyer wasn’t immediately identified. The 3.96-metre painting captures the immediate aftermath of a car crash and depicts a twisted body sprawled across a car’s mangled interior. The 1963 work has only been seen in public once in the past 26 years. The previous Warhol auction record was $US71.7 million, set in 2007.

■ TYPHOON HAIYAN

Local Filipinos pitch in By GaBrielle Stuart gabrielle.s@theguardian.co.nz

A week since Typhoon Haiyan hit, more than 600,000 people the Philippines are estimated to have been displaced from their homes and many local families are still struggling to reach loved ones. In Ashburton, the Filipino community has rallied together, and is working to collect blankets, food, water and funds to send back to families and friends who have had their homes destroyed and families

ripped apart by the typhoon. Local Filipino Migrante Coordinator Maria Cristina Tawatao said that the devastation in the Philippines could not be described. She said that the situation was especially bad in many of the rural provinces, where the lack of infrastructure made it very hard for aid and supplies to get to those who desperately needed it. In Mid Canterbury, she said that it was very hard for local Filipino families to stay in Ash-

burton while they knew their families were struggling back home. She knew of families as close as Timaru who had already headed over there to help their family rebuild and join the hunt for missing family members. She said that any donations of funds or goods could help families in desperate need. Goods can be left at the Filipino dairies on Railway Terrace West in Rakaia, and in Ashburton on Victoria Street in the Triangle.

Typhoon Haiyan’s devastating work.

Dairy workers’ concert By GaBrielle Stuart gabrielle.s@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury’s Filipino dairy workers have cancelled Christmas this year, planning instead get up on stage and sing for their country. For the local Filipino community, the annual Christmas Party is a time of celebration, getting together with old friends and meeting new ones; enjoying good food and shared stories and memories of their homeland. This year, the families who have managed to contact their loved ones are the lucky ones, and they all know someone who is still waiting and desperately hoping for news. This year, no one feels like celebrating. The local branch of the Filipino Dairy Workers in New Zealand has already spent

months organising and gathering funds for the party, but Project Co-ordinator Ida Valerie Casipit said that the whole community agreed to use the funds to do something for their families back in the Phillipines. The whole community will use their talents as singers, dancers and musicians to put on a concert next weekend at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, with all proceeds going straight to families in the Philippines affected by the typhoon. Ms Casipit said that there had been an overwhelming response from “talented countrymen” who were willing to lend their time and effort to perform for the concert. Performances at the concert will include Acenith Orpilla singing Heal our Land; Ryan and Amy Baniqued danc-

ing Cariñosa; a modern dance number by the BREGS; Simon Bryan Dalauidao to perform acoustic songs; Rizza Sotelo and Christian Toralba to perform ballroom dances and the South2chain Band. Ms Casipit said that there was still a high number of casualties, thousands homeless and many still suffering in the Philippines and the damage was heart-breaking for every Filipino. Bayanihan – a benefit concert, will be on November 24, 2013 from 7pm at the Event Centre, Ashburton. Tickets are available at the Pinoy Dairy Shop at the Triangle, the Tindahang Pinoy in Rakaia, the Ashburton Trust Event Centre or FDWNZ and Migrante Officers. Tickets cost $10, or $30 for a family.

$2000 aids relief work Mid Cantabrians are doing their part to help the relief effort in the Philippines, contributing to more than $500,000 from New Zealand organisations already sent to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan. After three days of fundraising in Ashburton this month, the local branch of Save the Children New Zealand decided this week to donate the $2000 raised from this month’s raffle to the Philippines appeal. The funds were originally intended to support the local work of the organisation, but volunteers will take to the streets again next month to raise the

funds needed locally. Local committee member John Harper said that the community had rallied to support the effort, and Save the Children were very pleased with the response. With people already on the ground in the Philippines, current priorities are providing emergency supplies, shelter, healthcare and services for vulnerable children. Long term the organisation aims to help to reestablish schools and education services in the Philippines, providing support, security and a future for children. The local branch will hold another raffle in December.

■ MT HUTT COLLEGE

In brief

Students bring own tablets By Myles HuMe

Myles.h@theguardian.co.nz

The vision one day that all Mid Canterbury pupils will arrive at school with their own electronic devices is already becoming a reality. Yesterday, Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said a Year 8 class next year will bring their own tablets or laptops to school as part of a trial that may soon be rolled out across the entire school. Ashburton Borough has similar plans, while other schools across the district have held iPad-focused classrooms and asked pupils to bring particular

devices to school. For the Mount Hutt college trial class, pupils will be asked to “bring your own devices”, also known as BYOD, but not smartphones, to play a significant role in their learning at school. “We’re always looking at ways to enhance learning and some advantages of using technology is that students are able to access information anywhere. They can store it in the cloud and their teachers can leave information there too,” Mr Schreurs said. “The discussion in classrooms now isn’t about the knowledge, it’s about using knowledge,

now we can learn and take discussions to the next stage.” He said parents would also have an insight into what was being taught in class and a better connection with the college. Mid Canterbury Fibre Connected Schools (MCFCS) regional support co-ordinator Trudy Hulme predicted most local schools would adopt the BYOD concept by 2017. She said Mount Hutt College’s flexible approach around what devices can be used would cut costs for families who already have purchased devices, and also allow for an easy transition if there was a change of school.

With EA Networks delivering fibre to the doors of every Mid Canterbury school and two major ministry IT programmes, schools are in a strong position to make the step into modernday learning, she said. However, Mr Schreurs said the school security system created some headaches with limited access to some apps, and there would be a focus on creating responsible use policies. He also accepted affordability of the devices could be difficult for families if it was rolled out across the entire school, but said if it became necessary to engage in learning then the school would make it possible.

A high-profile Bay of Plenty lawyer allegedly acted for a vulnerable teenage client the day after he had sex with her, a tribunal has been told. Craig Horsley, 55, appeared before the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal in Auckland this week to face allegations of “disgraceful and dishonourable” conduct and misleading the law standards committee. Mr Horsley admitted lying, and denying the relationship. He said he didn’t want his wife to suspect the baby the teenager was pregnant with was his. - APNZ

Ferry out of action

While her friends are busy cramming for NCEA exams, Hazel Redmond will be flying up to Auckland to feature in a Make-A-Wish promotional film. The 18-year-old Ashburton student had her wish to meet New Zealand designer Karen Walker granted by the Make-AWish Foundation last year. This week she will get the chance to work with her idol again, but this time she is doing it for others. “Meeting Karen meant a lot to me. It kind of changed my life. When they asked me to be an ambassador I barely had to think about it, because they’ve done so much for me and I would love to give something back.” Three years on from being diagnosed with encephalitis, a rare, acute brain inflammation, Hazel is doing well, although she said that recovery was slower than she hoped. She will spend two days in Auckland working on the short film, sharing about her experience and what it meant to her and other children with lifethreatening medical conditions. The short film will be released later this year, and will feature on YouTube and the Make-AWish Foundation website.

The Interislander’s largest passenger ferry is expected to be out for six months after losing one of its propellers last week. The KiwiRail-owned Cook Strait ferry service said it would be operating at nearly half its capacity over the peak summer period as repairs were carried out on its “workhorse” Aratere ship. The Aratere lost its propeller during a Cook Strait crossing last Tuesday.

■ ASHBURTON INTERMEDIATE

Support explored for excluded pupil By Myles HuMe

Myles.h@theguardian.co.nz

The Ministry of Education says it is exploring avenues for the Ashburton Intermediate child who was excluded this year, and is assuring he will not fall out of the system. Ashburton Intermediate principal Gavin Cooper said this week the school could not cope with the extreme behaviour of the child and was left to exclude him because he felt there was little support at his disposal.

Ministry of Education guidelines state if a child is excluded, the principal has 10 days to find a school to accept the pupil. But that didn’t happen and the pupil has now been referred to the ministry and is out of the education system. The ministry says it “is aware of this student’s needs and is working with other agencies to get the best service and support”. That could see him eventually re-enrolled in a new school,

and/or referred to the Intensive Wraparound Service, introduced this year in response to the closure of McKenzie Residential School which dealt with pupils with learning difficulties, including those with severe behavioural issues. However, Mr Cooper said he had tried to access that, but South Island positions were full so the pupil could not be included. He felt getting assistance for pupils with extreme behavioural

difficulties was becoming harder, and agencies working with them were sometimes hampered by legislation. The ministry said if the child was eventually included in the wraparound service, it could see him referred to one of the remaining residential schools in New Zealand, or supported in the mainstream system by a raft of resources, including mentors and teachers with additional training. “If, for whatever reason the

Intensive Wraparound Service is not immediately available, there remains a variety of other local services available to support children,” the ministry said. That could include the Resource Teachers: Learning and Behaviour initiative which supports schools and teachers and the ministry’s Education Behaviour Service which “has a team of specialists that schools can call in to help if a child is experiencing severe behaviour difficulties”.

Magic Moments boost kitchen coffers By GaBrielle stuart gabrielle.s@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton Trust Event Centre is halfway towards owning its commercial kitchen and catering equipment, after close to $10,000 was raised through the recent Magic Moments fundraising show. A cast of close to 30 performers, as well as organisers, band and an enthusiastic audience contributed to make the fundraising show a success and bring the event centre one step

closer to the $80,000 needed to purchase the kitchen and catering equipment. Ashburton Trust Event Centre manager Roger Farr said that the centre wouldn’t be able to function without the kitchen and bar. “It’s huge. “The income from food and bar sales is a big part of what keeps us going.” The kitchen equipment and bar licence is currently owned by the Ashburton Trust, but he said that staffing the bar and

kitchen was proving very inefficient for them. “The roster proved very complicated. As intermission’s only twenty minutes and that’s when we do most business, often they’d be down here for two hours and only do fifteen minutes work.” He said it was far more practical for staff at the event centre to run the kitchen and bar. It would also prove a valuable source of income in the future, allowing the centre to continue in the district and bring many

more shows and events to Mid Canterbury. Five part-time staff have been taken on at the centre to run the bar and catering side of the business, and he said that hiring the kitchen out for catering purposes was being considered. Fundraising will continue next year to fund the remainder of the equipment, and Mr Farr hoped that the directors of Magic Moments would return to perform the show for a second time next year.

Work has begun to plug the ventilation shaft at the former Pike River mine ahead of the planned re-entry, Solid Energy says. The company announced yesterday a high-strength expanding resin had been placed into the mine shaft, which had then been topped with concrete. “Once the concrete has set, the remaining area will be filled with an expanding foam material which will also be topped off with a final layer of concrete,” the company said. Sealing the shaft is designed to “fully stabilise the environment in the mine”. Solid Energy said the bottom 40 to 50 metres of the shaft, originally about 100 metres deep, was filled with rock from an earlier collapse. The remaining area, which is being filled in this phase of the re-entry project, is approximately 700 cubic metres in volume. After the ventilation shaft is sealed off completely, the mine would be pumped full of nitrogen to force out any methane gas and allow experts to walk down a 2.3km shaft to a rockfall. Solid Energy also said workers were continuing to plan for the next phase of the re-entry plan, which involved drilling additional boreholes into the main tunnel. In September, Prime Minister John Key pledged $10 million of government support for a reentry plan if it was safe, feasible and financially credible. The majority of the 29 men who perished in the November 2010 explosions were believed to have been inside the mine’s main workings at the time.

■ METHVEN GARDEN COMPETITION

Glorious gardens By GaBrielle Stuart gabrielle.s@theguardian.co.nz

As spring turns to summer, gardens around Mid Canterbury are in full bloom and looking their best – so when judges of the Methven Garden Club competition went looking for exceptional gardens this year they had a tough job just narrowing down the field. It was a close competition this year across most of the six sections, and judges Jeff and Joy Jaine of Tinwald said they were impressed by the quality of the Methven gardens. Chris and Ron Tullett took the premier award for their 30-yearold garden featuring established roses, a large vegetable garden and raised beds filled with an abundance of colour. The couple have spent years establishing the garden, which was a bare section when they moved to the property in 1978. With schedules busy with work during the week, the biggest challenge for the couple was finding time to get out in the garden, so although moments in the garden were rare,

Mrs Tullett said that watching the grandchildren enjoy it was almost as satisfying. The couple placed in the competition close to 30 years ago when they were first developing the garden, and won the open section last year. The Markillie garden took the open section this year, and although the couple were first time winners, the property was not new to the competition, having taken out top awards in previous years under different owners. Mrs Lamont took top place for both the intermediate section and the outstanding feature award, while the colour and care competition was taken by a new entrant and the Meiklejohn family once again took the top award in the half-acre section. The commercial section was won by Brinkley Resort, who narrowly took the title from Mt Hutt Motels after completing some work in the gardens this year. The outstanding feature award went to a garden seat with ornamental buxes at 10 Lochhead Crescent.

■ FERRY TERMINAL

Website for survivors Base stays in happy Picton A website telling the stories of rape and sexual assault survivors in their own words launches today with a social media campaign encouraging people to share their own experiences. It comes as protests are planned around the country tomorrow against rape culture and the police response to the Roast Busters group, who boasted online about their sexual exploits with young girls. The I Am Someone website was set up by Meg Bates to give voice to people who have experienced sexual violence and harassment, and raise awareness of rape culture. The site will be promoted with a social media campaign today, with people being invited to share their own stories in tweets, Facebook posts and blogs using

the tag #IAmSomeoneNZ. Ms Bates, a mother-of-two from west Auckland, said she also wanted to combat the victim-blaming in the media commentary on the Roast Busters. She wanted to show how common these experiences were, and how even apparently minor incidents helped build the culture that allowed the Roast Busters to happen. “A lot of women and men are dealing with things like this on a day-to-day level. Those men who yell out of windows of cars make women feel unsafe.” Jasmine Gray, who got involved with the site after connecting with Ms Bates through a mutual friend on Facebook, said she hoped the site would also allow survivors to know they weren’t alone. - APNZ

A decision to keep the South Island ferry terminal base in Picton - dashing hopes for a reduced travelling time between the North and South islands - has been met with celebration in the Marlborough town. Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee announced the news yesterday after a year-long Transport Ministry investigation found the construction of a privately-funded Clifford Bay terminal, 35km south of Blenheim, would not be viable. While the Transport Ministry investigation estimated the travel time between Wellington and Christchurch for road-ferry travellers would have reduced by almost an hour and a half, and nearly two hours for rail passengers, Picton locals said the possible effects

of losing tourist business from docking ferries would be devastating. Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman said the decision had been greeted with “relief ” by Picton residents. “We’ve been waiting for this for a number of years, and really it’s paralysed a town that couldn’t move forward.” “Nobody could invest money in Picton [and] nobody could sell their businesses, because you just don’t know what the future would hold.” According to Destination Marlborough, 1.2 million tourists travelled to Picton on the ferry each year, he said. The proposed ferry terminal shift would have affected more than 100 families who rely on business from ferry tourists, he said. - APNZ

■ CHRISTCHURCH REBUILD

$1b for school renewal projects A $1 billion cash injection will modernise 80 per cent of classrooms in greater Christchurch over the next nine years, the Government announced today. The Government last year announced in controversial fashion that it will spend the money in a decade-long programme of restoring and renewing the schools in the post-earthquake environment. Today, it outlined a schedule for rebuilding, repairing and renewing 115 schools across greater Christchurch. It will include building 13 schools on new sites, rebuilding 10 schools on existing sites, and either fully or moderately redeveloping a further 92 schools. More than 1200 new classrooms will be built, and further 1200 repaired in what will create “improved teaching spaces, fit for modern learning best practice and technology”. “This is a substantial investment and a significant milestone in education re-

newal in greater Christchurch that I know schools and school communities have been eagerly awaiting,” said Education Minister Hekia Parata. “We are providing something better for the children and young people of Christchurch.” Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says the timeline for the rebuild is tight given the amount of work and its complexity. But the Ministry of Education will be undertaking a review in 2017 to see if they can bring forward the latter part of the programme. “When complete, over 80 per cent of classrooms in greater Christchurch will be modern learning environments,” Mr Brownlee said. “This will complement all the other rebuilding and renewal work going on around greater Christchurch.” - APNZ

Greer, of Bryndwr in Christchurch, earlier pleaded guilty to charges at Christchurch District Court that between January 1 this year and May 24, Greer “did enter into a dealing” with two girls under the age of 18 for the purpose of sexual exploitation. He also admitted supplying cannabis, as well as three charges of possessing cannabis and the Class B controlled drugs morphine, and Ritalin. Police said said Greer’s digital camera was found with 17 photographs of six different females in “various stages of undress exposing their genitals or breasts”. Text data recovered form Greer’s cellphone established he had sold cannabis to 20 “school-age students” over a five-month period.

Drugs for sexual favours A man who gave drugs to Christchurch schoolgirls in exchange for sexual favours inside his van parked outside school was jailed for four and a half years yesterday. Kevan Beria Greer, 45, staked out Burnside High School and lured uniformed teenage girls inside where he offered them cannabis. In return, he got the girls - aged 15 and 16 - to expose their breasts and bodies for him to photograph. Police watched the girls enter the van, which had curtains guarding the illicit deals in the back, before they pounced on Greer. They found two teenagers who admitted allowing the photographs to be taken in exchange for drugs and cigarettes. Officers also found $14,000 in cash stashed inside the van, as well as thou-

■ SHOPPING LOCALLY

In brief

Wheelchair makes retail journey easier For less able bodied people, shopping in Ashburton’s town centre will now be a less challenging undertaking. Thanks to the generosity of the Ashburton County Lions club, a wheelchair for shopping excursions is now available at the Ashburton i-Site. Having a wheelchair available for casual use was the brain child of Deirdre McFarlane. In her role as parish visitor for St James Presbyterian church, she regularly brings elderly people into town to shop. For some, that means bringing a wheelchair but many smaller modern cars cannot accommodate a chair, Mrs McFarlane said. “I mentioned the problem to the ladies from county lions and they said they would be happy to buy a chair to keep at the information centre,” she said. It would also be useful for people who may not usually be in a wheelchair but who would find it easier to travel around town in a chair rather than by walking, Mrs McFarlane said. Centre manager Katherine Lorenzo said the chair will be available without charge and can be booked by phoning the centre.

The woman who fell down a South Island glacier is now awake in her Christchurch Hospital bed and making slow progress. Heather Rhodes’ father, John Rhodes, said his daughter had a head injury, which would take time to recover from, but was now speaking a few words. Her first words were that she wanted to see her mother, Ann, who has been at her bedside since Ms Rhodes was admitted after the November 3 accident on Cameron Glacier in the Arrowsmith Range. - APNZ

Builder’s leg smashed jumping to jetty Builder Steve Waghorn not only lost his false teeth in a boating accident but also nearly lost his leg. The 53-year-old Kaiapoi man watched his false teeth float away as he found himself caught underneath his boat after missing the half metre jump from his boat to the jetty in Kaikoura on October 25. “At that stage I had no idea I had done anything to my leg,” he said.

It wasn’t until his mates hauled him out of the water and he looked at his leg which looked like a “bent banana” he realised he was in trouble. Mr Waghorn had managed to break his leg in three places and “smash everything between the shin and ankle”. Mr Waghorn runs four building crews who are working for Fletcher EQR in the rebuild. He said he had tried to “sneak away” for a long Labour weekend but ended up on a return journey in a Westpac Helicop-

ter later that same day. “I had just put out the cray pots and the water was pretty rough. I didn’t want to damage the boat so I thought I would just jump to the jetty. “But I bloody missed it and there I was under the boat coughing out my false teeth,” he said. Mr Waghorn clawed his way back from underneath the boat to the side but when he tried to use his leg he went straight back under for “about a minute”.

His mates dragged him up onto the jetty and yelled for help but Mr Waghorn said at that stage he was more worried about his boat. “I got them to back up my truck and put it on,” he said. “The ambos arrived and took a look at it and said ‘you better start sucking on the gigglejuice’,” he said. Mr Waghorn was sent to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter and spent two hours in surgery; doctors were able to save his leg. - APNZ

■ AVIATION CHARGES

Pilot covers up after crash with centre pivot A lawyer for the Civil Aviation Authority said offending “can’t get much worse than this” after a Ranfurly helicopter pilot admitted colliding with an irrigator centre pivot while unlawfully carrying out commercial work, then repaired the helicopter himself and covered up the cause of the crash. Daniel James Parker (22) appeared for sentencing in the Alexandra District Court yesterday on five charges laid under the Civil Aviation Act. Judge

The first Central Otago cherries of the season are about to hit supermarket shelves, but industry leaders say it is too early to speculate on how the main crop will fare. Jacksons Orchard at Cromwell will start selectively harvesting its crop of Earlise variety cherries today and the fruit is destined for South Island supermarkets. “It’ll be a selective pick to get a few off in time for the weekend, and then we’ll start picking them in earnest next week,” orchard owner-manager Mark Jackson said. - APNZ

Michael Crosbie remanded him to the Dunedin District Court on December 12 to look into the possibility of an electronically-monitored sentence. Parker had admitted operating a Robinson 22 helicopter on a commercial agricultural aircraft operation at Lochar Downs Farm, Cromwell, on March 16 last year without having a commercial pilot’s licence, an agricultural aircraft operator certificate or an agricultural rating.

He had also pleaded guilty to operating a helicopter in a manner that caused unnecessary danger to property - colliding with a centrepoint irrigation system on the farm that day. The other charges related to his actions after the crash. Parker admitted operating a helicopter carelessly, by flying it on and off a truck when it was not in an airworthy condition and carrying out repairs without having an aircraft maintenance engineer licence.

He admitted making a false statement to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), saying the crash was caused by a “heavy landing” while ferrying a passenger, rather than a collision with the irrigator. “As far as offending is concerned, it can’t get much worse than this,” lawyer Fletcher Pilditch said, who was appearing for the CAA. Parker held a private pilot’s licence but did not have a commercial pilot’s licence. - APNZ

Meridian Energy said flat market conditions for electricity demand meant they would not proceed with the project for now. They do not rule out reviewing the project in future. Otters in residence? Lloyd Esler describes himself as a “cold hard skeptic”, but even he is starting to believe otters may have made themselves at home in Southland. Over the past decade, the Invercargill natural history teacher and author has spoken to 11 people who have seen something small, speedy and otter-like in southern waterways. Ten of the sightings were within a 25km radius of Otautau, Western Southland. The sightings occurred between 1929 and 2011 and all were “remarkably similar”, Mr Esler said. - APNZ

Money mules Kiwis are being targeted as “mules” to transfer stolen funds as part of a money laundering operation, according to the New Zealand Bankers Association. The association is warning people to be wary of transferring money on behalf of strangers in light of a new scam. The scam involves New Zealanders being contacted by people they don’t know via email, phone or social media websites claiming to have accidentally paid money into their bank account. The stranger then asks the funds to be returned using a money remittance service. The association said the funds deposited were likely to have been stolen. - APNZ

The creative talents of Ashburton College’s Year 11 and 12 pupils was on show for all to see this week, as the teens revealed their final portfolios. At the Ashburton Domain

pavilion were (from left) college Art head of department Claire Robertshaw, Kim SinclairWhite and Megan White looking over the NCEA artwork of Amy White.

The evening saw 65 portfolios on display, featuring the works of NCEA Level 1 and 2 pupils. College arts co-ordinator Lyndal Lane said the evening

was well attended and gave family members the opportunity to see students’ final product, which “they would have heard so much about” throughout the year.

Mr Black said he would be following up with the establishment to ensure they passed on the simple water safety message to their guests - if they were kayaking or boating in any craft less then 6m long, they must wear a lifejacket.

Mr Black then checked on another kayak in the middle of the lake and discovered a Frenchman without a lifejacket. “This guy was within a kilometre of where two French kayakers drowned a couple of years ago ...” - APNZ

Medal’s mystery ends The exploits of a WWI pilot have been re-lived in an extraordinary medal ceremony in Russell almost 100 years after he was shot down for the ninth and final time. Four years ago Russell RSA member Peter Roberts was sorting through medals donated to the club when he came across a rare Military Cross with Two Bars. Only nine were awarded worldwide in WWI. Determined to give the medal and its original owner the respect they deserved, Mr Roberts and his wife Barbara set about finding out who it had been awarded to. The name had been scratched off. After years of research, inquiries to museums and even forensic testing, the couple established the medal had been awarded to Australian Alfred Youdale for bravery in the skies of France and Belgium. He died in 1917 before he had a chance to wear it. The couple then set about contacting all the Youdales they could find in the Sydney suburb where he was born, until they finally found a great-nephew who thought the medal was in the Imperial War Museum in London. How the medal ended up in Russell is a mystery. On Monday, Armistice Day, four members of Alfred Youdale’s family flew from Sydney to attend a formal unveiling of his Military Cross with Two Bars and accompanying service medals at the Russell RSA. They were “incredibly surprised” to hear about the medals. - APNZ

■ FARM LIFE

Working dogs’ welfare in research spotlight By Sally Rae Dogs may be man’s best friend but, on many New Zealand farms, they are also often their best employees. Now a research project has been launched to look at New Zealand working dogs’ health, welfare and survival. The TeamMate project is being led by Dr Lori Linney, from Vetlife Alexandra, who will work alongside Dr Naomi Cogger, from the EpiCentre at Massey University, the largest veterinary epidemiology training and research centre in Australasia. Dr Linney, who emigrated to New Zealand from Canada in

1988, has a special interest in both soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery in working dogs. She also has a soft spot for working dogs, acknowledging the contribution they have made to the pastoral sector, but also their “real personalities”. “They’re the biggest unpaid workforce ever, never more loyal and certainly uncomplaining. They are a dog you’re just in awe of. They are just so cool,” she said. She was captivated by their “amazing” temperaments and the abilities they possessed. “They get hold of you. It makes the job not a job. It makes it a pleasure,” she said. Animal recruitment was oc-

curring at the moment and more than 250 dogs would be involved in the project over a three to five-year period. While there would be a strong focus on Central Otago, clients from throughout the Vetlife clinics in Canterbury and Otago would be involved. Dr Linney was excited about the project, saying it was hoped to improve the welfare of dogs on farm and their working life so farmers could maximise their investment in time and training. “The idea is to get longer, happier lives out of them,” she said. There was also quite a relationship between farmers or shepherds and their dogs and they were often mates. They

worked as a team and farmers wanted them as well as possible. Hopefully, some recommendations could be defined that would optimise performance and limit injuries, she said. The project was launched at Milford Galleries, alongside a Vetlife-commissioned Hannah Kidd sculpture, which featured a shepherd and his dog with a sheep, as part of her working dog exhibition. Ms Kidd, a 2001 graduate from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art, spent about six months working on the exhibition. Originally from Christchurch, she now lived in Methven, a “semi-rural area”, and she was fascinated by working dogs.

OUR VIEW

Doing the right thing Coen Lammers EDITOR

D

oing the right thing is not always obvious. The recent debate around the Government’s deal with Sky City is a perfect example. Parliament this week signed off on a deal in which the Auckland Casino foots the bill for a new $400 million convention centre in return for adding 230 pokie machines and 40 extra gaming tables to its gambling options. Opposition parties and gambling support groups have strongly opposed the arrangement, stating the Government is creating new jobs at the expense of the most vulnerable in our society. Some research supports the argument that each new pokie machine contributes another addict to New Zealand’s growing pool of problem gamblers and opponents have dismissed the agreement as a deal with the devil. In the black and white world of Utopia this may be true but sadly we live in a world of grey where people need jobs to survive and politicians are forced to make deals that may be in conflict with other policies. In this instance, the additional gaming machines clearly contravene recent Government policies of reducing their number throughout the country. Most of us will be glad we don’t have to weigh up 1000 new construction jobs and 800 jobs to run the convention centre against the risk of getting more people addicted to gambling. Opponents say it is a simple choice when people’s health is threatened. Those same opposition parties demand the Government creates more jobs, but in recent times have opposed just about every realistic economic expansion in this country. The Sky City arrangement is far from perfect, but appears to be a pragmatic solution to balance a number of issues in our society. If Sky City had asked for another casino in a different location, it would have created an unacceptable risk and is unlikely to have been approved. However, patrons are already heading to Sky City and adding pokies to this existing destination is not creating new gambling outlets and many will see this as an acceptable menace for the greater benefit of our wider community.

YOUR VIEW Toot for Tucker An innovative and fun evening for a good cause. Let’s hope that it is a successful and safe event without any injuries to the participants. Why mention injuries? Well we all must take responsibility for our actions, both as organisers and as participants. That is why I do not expect to see teenagers riding on trailers as they did last year. We get all uptight about cycle helmets, seat belts and car seats, take a moment to consider the risks faced by both the trailer riders and their drivers. A prosecutable offence? You bet! And for both parties and maybe even the organisers as well. Toot for Tucker and for a safe event. Alan Gulleford

They have now succeeded in receiving a sympathetic hearing from the government in order to put their wishes into practice. No doubt once the changes are made the directors will be in line for bonus payments for their “achievement”. On Monday, November 4 I posted a large bundle of mail at the Ashburton Post Office around 2.30pm. In the past these letters would have been delivered around Ashburton probably the next day. Now, however, the mail is sent to Christchurch for sorting. Some of the people we mailed to received their postings on Friday, some Saturday and others not all by the weekend. On Friday, November 8 I made an inquiry at the Ashburton Post Office as to why the

mail had not been delivered. They could not advise me but offered a booklet with details of how to contact their inquiry service. In the booklet no compensation is offered for missing mail and a tracing inquiry would take 14 days. No doubt email will have had an effect on financial margins however many loyal staff will be sidelined for the company to achieve its goals. If our example is any indication what is happening now, what on earth lies ahead when the three-day delivery system commences? John Lawler

Shark finning Kudos to New Zealand officials for stopping the war on sharks. By banning shark finning in New Zealand waters, countless sharks will be spared from being hooked, hauled into boats, having their fins sliced off

with knives and dumped back into the water to slowly drown, bleed to death or be helpless to fight off an attack by other sharks. So many people simply aren’t aware of this sadistic practice, but sharks are being maimed and killed like this all over the world, predominantly to produce shark-fin soup. Populations of nearly all species of sharks are plummeting due to the carnage. All this suffering for a bowl of soup. If you wouldn’t ever consider supporting such appalling cruelty, remember that cows, pigs, chickens, sheep and other animals, including fish and other sealife, also suffer when killed and cut up for their body parts. If you don’t want to be a part of the deadly cycle, go vegan, and no one has to die for your meal. Jason Baker, Vice-president of International Operations, PETA Asia-Pacific

■ SRI LANKA

In brief

Spotlight on human rights By Christian OttOn Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse has hit back at allegations of war crimes which are set to overshadow this week’s Commonwealth summit, saying he has “nothing to hide” from his critics. Rajapakse, who will chair the three-day summit in Colombo, said yesterday he was ready to confront the likes of Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron but would not be lectured to. The summit has already been dogged by boycotts, with the leaders of Canada, India and Mauritius staying away over the bloody end in 2009 to one of Asia’s deadliest civil wars. Rajapakse has been under fire from rights groups and UN bodies over his refusal to allow an independent investigation into the finale of the conflict, which pitted ethnic Tamils against the majority Sinhalese government. “We are very open, we have nothing to hide,” the president, who is Sinhalese, told reporters on the eve of the summit. Rajapakse said he was ready to meet Cameron to discuss allegations that up to 40,000 ethnic Tamil civilians were killed by Sri Lankan forces in the closing stages of the 37-year conflict in the island’s north. “I will be meeting him and we will see what (happens), I will also have to ask some questions,” said the president, who visibly bristled and raised his voice as he answered questions from reporters. Rajapakse, who was elected president of the former British colony in 2005, mounted a stout defence of his administration’s handling of allegations of rights abuses. “We have a legal system in Sri Lanka,” he told the press conference. “We have a human rights commission, now the Commonwealth is ready to strengthen it. “If there are any violations, we will take actions against anybody.”

Black Caviar’s half-brother is fighting for his life in a Victorian equine clinic. It is believed the colt, bought for a record $5 million at the Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney, was bitten by a white-tailed spider two weeks ago which caused laminitis swelling in a front leg. The next 48 hours are vital to his survival. Flemington equine vet Tom Brennan said the prospects of a horse making it to the racetrack after contracting laminitis were slim. - AAP

The 67-year-old leader said his administration deserved credit for ending the conflict. “People were getting killed for 30 years, at least after 2009 we have stopped it. There is no killing in Sri Lanka today.” At least 100,000 people lost their lives in the conflict. As well as the allegations against government forces, Tamil Tiger rebels - who were known for their trademark suicide bombings - are also accused of killing thousands of people. Cameron, who intends to travel to the war-torn northern Jaffna peninsula, has said he wants to have “tough conversations” with Rajapakse during the summit. The British premier, who has rejected calls to join the boycott, will be the first foreign leader to

visit the north since Sri Lanka’s independence in 1948. “There needs to be proper inquiries into what happened at the end of the war, there needs to be proper human rights, democracy for the Tamil minority in that country,” he said in comments broadcast by India’s CNN-IBN network yesterday. “There’s always a case for not going somewhere, but I think actually we will get further by going and having conversations with the Sri Lankans about what needs to happen and shining a light on some of the issues and problems that are there.” The Australian Senate yesterday passed a resolution calling on Prime Minister Tony Abbott to “raise the matter of an independent investigation into

allegations of violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law” with the Sri Lankan president. Kamalesh Sharma, the Commonwealth’s secretary-general, denied suggestions the organisation had been ineffective in dealing with allegations against the summit hosts. Asked whether Sri Lanka’s alleged right abuses made a mockery of the Commonwealth’s charter of shared values, the former Indian diplomat said the organisation had made progress by engaging with Rajapakse’s regime. “It (alleged rights abuses) is not making a mockery. “It is showing the Commonwealth in action,” he said. - AFP

The text shows widespread disagreements among negotiators, despite calls from US President Barack Obama to seal the agreement by the end of the year. Talks are scheduled to resume on Tuesday in Salt Lake City, Utah. - AFP

Grandma faces life A Sydney grandmother accused of supplying $12 million worth of ice has wept violently in court as she was told that she could face life in prison. Lu Jing Yu, 39, faced Kogarah Local Court yesterday where police alleged she was supplying 10kg of methamphetamine, or “ice”. The Carlingford mother-of-five and grandmother cried as she was told that a conviction could carry a maximum penalty of life behind bars. - AAP

Harry up for cold race Britain’s Prince Harry is to set off for a charity race to the South Pole next week, after months of preparation which included spending a night in a giant freezer. The three seven-man teams, including from Australia, are to fly to Cape Town on Sunday, Kensington Palace said. On Tuesday, the teams will fly on to Novolazarevskaya Station, Antarctica, where they will spend a few days acclimatising before setting off for the pole on November 30. - DPA

■ WILDLIFE CONCERNS

Tern fears fail to stop housing time or even at the same time and public access to the sand dunes would be restricted to five defined points. The land is at the most northern point of the Auckland Council’s jurisdiction boundary and abuts the Mangawhai Wildlife Reserve. “Fairy terns are critically endangered,” the commissioners’ decision said, citing nesting at only four North Island sites, one of which is the Mangawhai Wildlife Refuge, 100m north of the development site. “The local fairy tern popula-

tion is eight to 10 breeding pairs and the total world population is around 30 to 40 birds. “The New Zealand dotterel is more numerous with around 2200 individuals here,” the decision said. The Te Arai area is home to a number of threatened or endangered flora and fauna species but a shorebird management plan had been prepared with sign-off from the Department of Conservation, the Environmental Defence Society and the Royal Forest and Bird Society. - NZH

In hydro, Genesis has the Tongariro Power Scheme on the central plateau and Tekapo A and B, in the South Island. The company’s partial privatisation is expected to follow a similar time line to Mighty River’s, which occurred shortly after its first half result. If that proved the case, Genesis would come to the market some time in April or May. payment before having to pay the final instalment, which is due in May 2015. A similar approach is not seen as likely for Genesis, because of its size. Exactly how Genesis is divested is yet to be determined, as it will largely depend on the market conditions prevailing at the time. But the Treasury will be aware that across the Tasman, the IPO market - which has been largely dormant since the global financial crisis - is emerging from a prolonged post-GFC slumber, which means that there will soon be increased competition in Australasia for the investment dollar. All up, Genesis is estimated to be worth about $1.8 to $2 billion, with Kupe accounting for $400 million to $500m of that.- APNZ

Genesis ‘runt of the litter’ The Government, fresh from the sale of shares in Mighty River Power and Meridian Energy, faces a harder sell when it comes to divesting a 49 per cent stake in the third and final power generator on its partial privatisation list - Genesis Energy, analysts said. So far, the Government’s mixed ownership model has proven to be something of a mixed bag; Mighty River Power - despite a strong financial performance still trades at a big discount to its $2.50 issue price. Meridian Energy, the jewel in the crown among the state’s generating assets, had a much lower shareholder uptake than Mighty River but listed strongly on NZX; the $1.00 receipts peaking at $1.11. They have since drifted off, trading yesterday at $1.04. Analysts said the LabourGreen’s policy of state control of the intricate wholesale electricity market was a negative hanging over all the power generators. “I’m not sure why, but it (Genesis) is seen as being the runt of the litter,” said one analyst. “People don’t look upon it favourably, but maybe that creates opportunities to get the business ship-shape and move it forward,” the analyst, who requested anonymity, said. Genesis is New Zealand’s biggest energy retailer. Among its generating assets, it owns the

Beachfront preservationists fear extinction of the endangered fairy tern after residential development at Te Arai, 110km north of Auckland, got the go-ahead yesterday. A statement from development opponents the Te Arai Beach Preservation Society said members were “shocked but not surprised” at the decision from independent hearing commissioners to allow Te Arai Coastal Lands Trust - which includes John

Darby’s Darby and Partners - to develop 46 luxury houses on the beach site between Pakiri and Mangawhai. The society cited an ecological expert’s evidence of a high risk any land use change could contribute to the extinction of fairy tern or lower the chances of the species expanding its breeding range along the Te Arai coast. But commissioners chaired by Leigh McGregor said in a 46page decision that it was reasonable to assume the 46 houses would not be occupied all the

In brief

Getting some fresh Air By Mark WeBster It’s here - in fact, so is the iPad mini with Retina Display, as of yesterday. But I haven’t had the chance to look at one of those yet. But I do have an Air in my hands. The first impression is how different it feels. It might sound a bit odd, but it actually feels more solid, as if there’s very little air inside. I guess Apple couldn’t really call it the Airless - indeed, it’s called an Air because of significant slimming, as with Apple’s ultra-thin laptop, the MacBook Air. And the slimming is pretty impressive: it only weighs 468 grams, it’s 28 per cent lighter than the previous full-size iPad and a very impressive 20 per cent thinner, at only 7.5 millimetres thick. And, overall, it’s a smaller device since the bezel is slimmer - but the screen is the same size as the 4’s. Overall it’s 240mm long and 169.5mm wide, compared to the previous iPad’s 242x185mm. To the hand, that means most people can hold it easily in one and one-handed use was one of attractive features of the iPad mini. But the other news is that despite its weight-loss program, the iPad Air boasts cracking performance. In fact, for the last three years I’ve been warning people that iPads are not laptops, and please don’t confuse the two. I’m not so sure I can say that with much conviction any more. Power-wise the Air is really getting up there. I Geekbenched it myself to a single-core score of 1480, and a multi-core score of 2690. A few years ago I Geekbenched a mid-2007 iMac with an Intel 2-core CPU and 3GB

RAM and it reached 2877 for Multicore ... The model iPad Air I had to test lists as having a 1.37GHz ARM Processor, with two Cores, a Level 1 Instruction Cache of 64.0KB, L1 Data Cache of 64KB, and an L2 Cache of 1MB. RAM is 976MB. The iMac had 32KB L1 and Instruction caches. The iPhone 5s I looked at two weeks ago Geekbenched at 1395 and 2497, so the Air is faster than that 64-bit beastie as well. There is a slight difference in CPU speed, true: the 5s has a slightly slower, 1.28GHz 2 Core processor vs the Air’s 1.37GHz; they’re both 64-bit. You can check some Geekbenchmarks yourself at the Geekbench site. It’s only on the input side that things hold a more powerful iPad back from being a PC replacement. That and pure screen size, of course. A little screen for checking emails on is fine, and for a game or two, but serious computing requires serious desktop real estate. While the mouse/trackpad and keyboard combo might be imperfect remote-control devices, they sure give you a lot of control. There’s a limit, so far, to what you can effect with direct touch. That’s why humans invented remote controllers in the first place - from levers to light switches, being able to be here while affecting something over there has a lot going for it. But interim measures don’t seem to do it - not for me. I find a desktop with a touchscreen to be very cumbersome: a mouse, maybe, a keyboard, plus reaching out horizontally to touch a screen and the armstrain and input confusion that results is a dog’s breakfast. On a tablet, that’s not so bad

Hoki skins to nano-fibres Iain Hosie reckons his company is a good example of the kind of manufacturing that can thrive in New Zealand. The Hendersonbased Revolution Fibres is hardly a labour-intensive operation. The firm - whose electro-spinning technology creates nano-fibres out of hoki skins, a by-catch of the fishery, which are used in everything from air filters to fishing rods and cosmetics - has a maximum of three staff on its factory floor at any one time. Another three staff are focused on research and development. And Hosie said the products were “incredibly highvalue and incredibly light”. “This is almost a weightless export,” he said. “The amount of nano-fibre you can fit into a shipping container is quite ridiculous.” - NZH

Twitter leads the way The new Apple iPad Air boasts cracking performance figures.

simply because the iPad is small enough to transition quickly between sitting up and lying flat. Fortunately, on that front, I also had the good luck to be able to check out Logitech’s latest FabricSkin’ Folio cover for Air, just before it was available for sale. It was in a box with a sticker saying ‘For iPad Air’ in place over the printed-on ‘For iPad 5th Generation’, that’s how new it is. I imagine a few third parties got caught out with Apple’s surprise ‘Air’ moniker. The Folio I got to try was immediately a more vibrant red than the Product (RED) Apple case I looked at, with a coarse weave to it. There will be several case offerings with keyboards, of course, but Logitech seems to have cornered the market in very thin yet stylish versions. The Air is held strongly, if rather improbably, by two topcorner clips and the keyboard has a slightly rubbery-feeling covering that feels good while being splash-proof. Yeah, you can test that on your own iPad. But awesome for environments like kitchens. It’s coupled via Bluetooth. The case clasps to itself mag-

netically and there’s no rim for the bottom edge to slot into to hold it up like a laptop screen, no - that’s grabbed magnetically as soon as it’s near the zone. With this quality of accessory, that would be the last time I toted my MacBook Pro to anything I just had to take notes at, phew! There’s also an even tougher aluminium version. Like Apple’s cases, they sleep the device when you shut them, and wake ‘em when you open them. Apple has also released cases to suit these new iPads. iPads are a bit slippery, after all, and while they have solid-state (so less prone to knocks) storage and tough glass and metal construction, I’ve seen plenty of iPhones with cracks in them. Many would prudently choose to protect what they just handed over some cold-hard for. There’s a Smart Case which covers both sides of the iPad, and a Smart Cover which hinges magnetically to one edge and only covers the glass. This iPad is a huge step forward in a trimmer form. I love it. - NZH

Just as one high-tech breakthrough often paves the way for the next big thing, technology IPOs move in virtuous cycles, too. Twitter’s scintillating stock market debut punctuated a procession of highly anticipated coming-out parties over the past two-and-half years, providing a springboard for a new generation of rapidly growing startups to make the leap to Wall Street. The next wave of potentially hot IPOs includes trendy services such as AirBnB, Square, Spotify, Dropbox, Uber, Snapchat, Pinterest, Box, Scribd, Flipboard and King.com. Most of their services are tailor made for smartphones and tablets, a crucial characteristic that helped feed the rabid demand for Twitter’s stock in its initial public offering. Despite its unprofitable history, Twitter is now worth about $US29 billion. - NZH

Police site ‘under-used’ A police ‘most wanted’ website aimed at tracking down criminals is being utilised by fewer than half of New Zealand’s police districts almost 18 months after it was launched. The police said last November that while 5 of the 12 police districts were using the online crime-fighting tool, the other 7 districts would follow suit “within the next month”. They hailed the site as a great success in hunting offenders on the run and a “valuable tool in locating or identify persons who are sought”.

In brief Breakers on thin ice While their sorry start to the season has caused serious damage to their championship defence, the Breakers could also be in danger of ceding another title. All the goodwill engendered in previous seasons with tough but fair tactics on-court matched by an amiable approach outside the lines - has begun to slip away, with their nice-guy reputation threatening to be replaced by a less desirable tag. Speaking before tonight’s encounter with Adelaide at Vector Arena, Daryl Corletto may have had a point when he alleged the NBL changed the rules to hamper the Breakers’ hopes, but that itself is besides the point. There won’t be much sympathy for Corletto across the Tasman. Rather, there will be a view that the gracious winners have become sore losers. - APNZ

End in sight for SBW? Knowing when to retire is one of the hardest decisions for any professional athlete and, in the case of Sonny Bill Williams, it might come sooner than some might hope and expect. “Maybe after 2015 or 2016, that might be it,” Williams says. “Sport’s not everything, bro.” Sport is what has helped define him, helped create brand SBW. It’s what has turned the 28-year-old into a superstar and why media agencies from Asia, the Middle East and the UK, not to mention Australasia, have requested interviews with him this week. He doesn’t have any definite ambitions when he retires - not that he lets on, anyway - and he won’t become an “ex-player on a TV show bagging the new generation of players coming through”. “I would just be happy quietly raising my family somewhere.” - APNZ

Dangerman pinpointed New Zealand have identified former Warrior Ian Henderson as a threat to their hopes of retaining the Rugby League World Cup. After moving serenely through the group stages, the Kiwis are not expected to encounter any serious trouble when they enter the sudden-death phase against surprise quarterfinalists Scotland at Headingley later tonight. However, utility forward Elijah Taylor is warning his side to be wary of the danger posed by half-backs Danny Brough and Peter Wallace as well as his former teammate Henderson. “Ian Henderson used to be a former New Zealand Warrior and in my first year in first grade, I was his training partner,” Taylor said. “He is a tough bloke and a smart footballer.” - PA

Wallabies ‘clueless’ In a damning reflection on the failed James O’Connor five eighth experiment, the Wallabies side that fell to the British and Irish Lions have been painted as clueless, headless chooks. Ireland fullback Rob Kearney has bluntly described then coach Robbie Deans’ Australian team as poor and without direction as they slumped to a 2-1 home series loss to the Lions four months ago. But Kearney believes Australia are a far better equipped outfit under new coach Ewen McKenzie, and with Quade Cooper calling the shots at No.10 ahead of this weekend’s clash with Ireland in Dublin. - AAP

■ RUGBY

One more accolade to come? BY JONATHAN LEASK

JONATHAN.L@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Meads Cup champions Mid Canterbury have had two players nominated for Heartland Rugby Championship player of the year. Captain Jon Dampney and Dwayne Burrows were both rewarded for strong seasons with selection to the Heartland XV, but are now up for player of the year honours at the 2013 Steinlager Rugby Awards in Auckland on Thursday December 5. Dampney and Burrows are up against South Canterbury captain Andrew Scarlett, who lifted the Lochore Cup for the province’s first time after three failed attempts, at the annual celebration of the best of New Zealand Rugby. The Chiefs’ second Super Rugby title on the trot sees the team, Coach Dave Rennie and co-captain Liam Messam represented in the nominations. Canterbury, easily the most successful provincial side of the century, is in line for Team of the Year while the sharp form all season of half back Andy Ellis gains him a nod for ITM Cup Player of the Year. The All Blacks’ clean sweep of the Steinlager Series followed up by victory again in the Rugby Championship sees nominations for coach Steve Hansen, and the team, while star wing-turnedcentre Ben Smith and dynamic loose forwards Kieran Read and

Liam Messam are in line for this year’s Kelvin R Tremain Player of the Year Award. In a repeat of last year’s nomination line-up for Coach of the Year, All Blacks Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens will again compete with Hansen and Rennie for the accolade after masterminding another Sevens World Series win and the team’s World Cup triumph in Moscow. The All Blacks Sevens are also up for Team of the Year, but the Hammers missed out on a nomination after their maiden Meads Cup victory. Steinlager Rugby Awards nominations: New Zealand Rugby Age Grade Player of the Year: Akira Ioane (Auckland Grammar), Damian McKenzie (Christ’s College), Ardie Savea (Wellington) Charles Monro Rugby Volunteer of the Year: Wayne Dowd (Auckland), Rob Jones (Manawatu), Mario Martinengo (North Harbour) New Zealand Rugby Referee of the Year: Nicky Inwood, Glen Jackson, Chris Pollock Pink Batts Heartland Championship Player of the Year: Dwayne Burrows

Savea, Romano back to power up ABs BY PATRICK MCKENDRY Julian Savea on the left wing, Luke Romano and Steven Luatua on the reserves bench - the All Blacks are ready to fight fire with fire against the English at Twickenham on Sunday morning. Savea predictably returns after flu ruled him out of last weekend’s 26-19 win over the French in Paris, with lock Romano playing in his first test since suffering his groin problem early in the Rugby Championship test against Australia in Sydney in August. Steve Hansen said he was happy with the way Cory Jane played on the wing in Savea’s absence, but Jane’s lack of match fitness and a slight knock meant it was a straightforward call. Charles Piutau’s performance on the other wing in his last two tests meant he was an automatic selection.

The addition of Savea, Romano and flanker Luatua, at the expense of loose forward Sam Cane, gives the All Blacks size and power against an England team likely to be scenting blood after watching Hansen’s men getting pushed around at the Stade de France. Their big pack also set up last year’s shock win at Twickenham. “Once we decided it was time to get Luke back

Julian Savea

out on the track then we had to decide whether we took a big loosie or a fetcher,” Hansen said. “Although we feel the English are really strong over the ball, they don’t have a dead-set fetcher like a [Michael] Hooper or a [Liam] Gill or even a [Richie] McCaw, for that matter. “We felt we could do with the extra height in the lineout. Logically we wouldn’t be subbing Richie anyway so we felt it was a better mix for this particular game.” Liam Messam will cover McCaw’s openside position if the skipper is injured. Hansen said he was expecting a brutal opening to the test. “The first half hour to 50 minutes is going to be torrid,” Hansen said.

“It could be that it goes right down to the wire. They’ve got a self belief because of last year and we’ve got a desire that’s pretty high because of last year and both those indicators will tell you that your preparation will be good, it will be genuine and it will be bone deep. “And then it comes down to delivering on the day and how you can cope with it.” Dan Carter will celebrate his 100th test with a start at firstfive. Hooker Keven Mealamu retains his place in the No2 jersey, with Dane Coles his back-up. All Blacks team to play England at Twickenham on Sunday, kick-off 3.30am NZT is: Israel Dagg, Charles Piutau, Ben Smith, Ma’a Nonu, Julian Savea, Dan Carter, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw (c), Liam Messam, Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Owen Franks, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock. Reserves: Dane Coles, Wyatt Crockett, Charlie Faumuina, Luke Romano, Steven Luatua, Tawera KerrBarlow, Aaron Cruden, Ryan Crotty. - APNZ

In brief Apprentice gets nod

Ricky’s hot run continues

Frank Ritchie is keen to make use of Miss Isle’s inside gate in Saturday’s Group 3 New Zealand Cup and believes apprentice Alex Forbes is just the jockey to settle the mare in a prominent early position. “He’s been doing quite a bit of riding for me and he’s been keen to get on her,” the Cambridge trainer said. “He’s a very good barrier rider who gets them out and can put them right in the race. The cup is one two mile race that I believe the barrier is important and we’ve drawn two this year. We’ll be looking to get her handy and give her as economical run as is possible.” - APNZ

It was a good day all round for the May family at yesterday’s Ashburton trots when fouryear-old Jack Hammer stormed home to win race nine. The Bettors Delight-Congo Gem gelding led the large field in the Canterbury Wool Brokers and Len Bell Memorial

Pace from the flag, running the 2400m in 3:07.6. The youngster is owned by the Strappers Syndicate of which Judy May is a member, is trained by Terry May and was driven by New Zealand Cup record holder for the most winning drivers, Ricky May.

And in winning Jack Hammer added a second win to his race day tally and significantly improved his $8000 in race day earnings. Bankcard, driven by Colin de Filippi, came home in third a nose back with Gerard O’Reilly and Loch In C third.

Two runners counted themselves out at the start. Jacko, driven by Ashburton’s John Hay and Montenegro, Jim Curtin, took no part, while Dexter Dunn was almost unseated when his drive Machie Mach became tangled in the starting melee.

Results from yesterday’s Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting The weather was fine and the track fast for the Ashburton Harness at Ashburton yesterday.

Group One king Mufhasa took another step toward next month’s Group 1 Captain Cook Stakes with a comfortable trial win at Cambridge. A last-start second in the Group 1 Windsor Park Plate, the nine-year-old landed his 1200 metre open heat by three lengths with a minimum of fuss. “It was a good trial and I was very pleased – he’d only had a couple of threequarter pace runs before that,” trainer Bruce Wallace said. “She’s spot on at the moment for the Captain Cook.” - APNZ

Ransomed up for Classic Ransomed has taken everything in his Group One stride in his build-up to his Australian debut on Saturday. The Spring Classic winner enjoyed a trouble-free trip to Melbourne and has worked in grand style ahead of Saturday’s Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) at Caulfield. “He travelled really well and has settled in without a problem,” trainer Gary Vile said. “He’s stabled at Russell Cameron’s place at Flemington and everything has gone really nicely.” - APNZ

Vespa repeats Otaki feat Vespa emulated his capable stable-mate Touche with a debut victory on his home track at Otaki yesterday for trainer Johno Benner. The Elusive City twoyear-old sat outside the leader before taking control getting in the straight and then sprinted clear to win by comfortably. “He’s got a lot of upside and he’s a great looking horse and I was very, very confident with him in the race,” Benner said. - APNZ

Daryl Sweeney’s favourite For different reasons jockeys have their favourite horses. Often it’s because of a big race win and sometimes because of a special bond between horse and rider. Such is the case with experienced Canberra jockey Kevin Sweeney and the Keith Dryden-trained Daryl. The pair combine in the XXXX Gold Snake Gully Cup (1400m) at Gundagai today. Sweeney has been aboard the fiveyear-old son of Delzao in 12 of his 16 starts during which time Daryl has recorded six wins and four placings. - AAP

YOUR STARS by Forecasters

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20) You’ve got hindsight, experience and a smart head for money to work with, but there is also a need to keep it real, walking before you run. TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21) While it’s important to learn from the past and your mistakes it is also time to move on, especially on the communication and relationship fronts. GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 22) While you should by now have a clear sense of what you want from your relationships, the journey to get there needs to take time. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 24) While your professional instincts are likely to be sharp this is a day that is more about listening to your intuition and imagination than taking action. LEO (JULY 24 – AUG 23) Today’s adventurous lunar vibes remind you that it’s all about the journey and that life’s most memorable moments usually come unannounced. VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 23) While your financial instincts are sharp, chances are this is more likely to confirm what you knew, creating a confidence boost. LIBRA (SEP 23 – OCT 23) Venus has given your heart a voice and the resources and confidence to use it, with today a chance to apply this to real life situations. SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 24) When you focus on your big objectives for the coming year, the smaller things will fall into place naturally, without having to over think things. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 24 – DEC 21) As you move into the final 7 days of your old solar year there isn’t the urgent need to close old doors that you will normally find. CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 20) Keep an open door policy when friendship and relationship building has not only become more important, but the tide has turned. AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 19) On the income, work and career fronts it is more about the journey, with the forces in play on all fronts in this for the long haul, as you should be too. PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20) With the end of your professional year coming into sight focus on the things that excite you, trusting what your sixth sense is telling you.

Massacre at Azteca

BY MICHAEL BURGESS All Whites captain Tommy Smith concedes that the team got their tactics and game plan wrong yesterday against Mexico. The New Zealand side were thrashed 5-1 at the Azteca Stadium and in the first half especially seemed willing to let the home side have possession, content to defend from in front of their own penalty area. The approach worked for the first 30 minutes but was always going to be difficult to maintain. “We dropped far too deep which allowed them too much time on the ball,” said Smith. “We were constantly under pressure in that first half - you can never hold out for 90 minutes if you haven’t got a touch of the ball. “Eventually they will score.” The All Whites had to maintain a defensive approach, but they looked to take that approach too far. Coach Ricki Herbert preferred to emphasise the inability to play to their strengths as his greatest disappointment. “We have things that we pride ourselves on and we just didn’t perform in those areas today,” said Herbert. “You can’t afford that against a team as good as Mexico.” After all the talk about an aerial advantage, the All Whites conceded two goals from set pieces. The second, a first minutes from half-time, felt like a killer blow. “That was the worst time to concede,” said Ivan Vicelich. “We have always been so resolute in those areas. “But you have to give credit to Mexico. They were very good and once they started to click it was always going to be difficult.” - HOS

Sevens side eyes berth at nationals BY JONATHAN LEASK

The Mid Canterbury Sevens team are hoping to book a return ticket to the National Sevens at its new home in Rotorua in January. The Mark Cousins-coached side have a final hit out in

the Canterbury Metropolitan Spring Sevens Tournament today before attempting to qualify for the nationals at the South Island Qualifying Tournament in Timaru next weekend. The side has already played two of the tournaments to date with Cousins shaping a new

look team that has featured eight players from the Ashburton College 1st XV, including Mid Canterbury Meads Cup winners Seta Koroitamana and Nete Caucau. “We have played the last two weekends and were able to blood about 20 players over the two

weeks, which is good to give a number of guys a chance and look at the depth we have,” Cousins said. “This weekend will certainly be closer to a final squad but the nature of the tournament, with a number of games quite close together, we’ll take a slightly

enlarged squad and then have to narrow it down afterwards.” Cousins also hopes to be able to call on the experience of the Mid Canterbury Heartland trio, Jon Dampney, Dwayne Burrows and Will Mackenzie, who were all members of the squad last year.
