Learner driver in lucky escape

Ashburton learner driver Anna Sturley is more wary than ever of being on the road since a car smashed into her vehicle on Saturday.

The 19-year-old and her partner were driving south on West Street, on the way to McDonalds, at about 6pm when she went through the Havelock Street intersection.

“Out of nowhere” a car zoomed out in front of her, its Filipino driver travelling east on Havelock Street, and she T-boned it.

“It plays over in my head what happened,” she said yesterday.

“I do have a fear of driving, and have been putting off going for my restricted,” she said, and the crash would just make that worse.

out of control and landed partially on top of another car, which was stopped at the lights on the opposite side of the intersection, while travelling west on Havelock Street.

Miss Sturley and her partner suffered whiplash, seatbelt burns and bruising.

She said the car which was partially crushed by the errant car landing on top of it had two elderly males in it, who had to both climb out the passenger door.

She had been travelling under the speed limit and believes if she had been going a bit faster the car could have hit her and her partner square on, severely injuring them.

Her car, a 1989 Honda Civic she had bought just three days earlier and named Susan, was a write-off.

Police and emergency services attended the crash.

World’s oldest man dies The world’s oldest man, a 112-yearold self-taught musician, coal miner and gin rummy aficionado from western New York, has died. He was 112. Salustiano SanchezBlazquez (right) died at a nursing home in Grand Island. Born on June 8, 1901, in the village of El Tejado de Bejar, Spain, he was known for his talent on the dulzaina, a double-reed wind instrument.

A Canterbury university student who lost both legs at a young age is aiming to be New Zealand’s top sprinter at the 2016 Paralympics. University of Canterbury commerce student Liam Malone, 19, hopes to realise his goal after successfully fundraising for a pair of blades. He was born with a condition called fibular hemimelia which meant both of his legs had to be amputated below the knee aged two and now wants to be the fastest disabled sprinter in the world. He has received funding which will cover the cost of the blades.

About 350 Mid Canterbury households remained without power yesterday afternoon, as EA Networks estimated the cost to the company of last Tuesday’s windstorm to be hundreds of thousands of dol-

lars. Network manager Brendon Quinn said about 50 households were without power due to network damage, however the majority of those would be restored by the end of the day.

There were a further 300 or so customers whose power lines were damaged on their own

properties, and many of those would not get power back until this week.

EA Networks lines staff had been working 14 to 16 hours days, with about 70 on Wednesday to Friday last week and 35 each day over the weekend.

“I think the storm was just so

big,” Mr Quinn said.

“The damage is as bad as that in the 2006 snow storm, but we don’t have the problem of getting around in the snow.”

The cost to EA Networks would be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars in repair costs and staffing.

Methven library comes crashing down

A loud crash and a cloud of dust marked the end of the 130-year-old Methven Public Library about 9.30am on Saturday.

About 20 onlookers watched the 45-minute demolition, and cheered as Harmer’s Earthmoving and Logging digger driver Tom Plunkett was able to save the building’s peak, which features two scrolls and the year 1883.

The library was demolished alongside fellow earthquakedamaged historic building Methven Historical Society on Bank Street.

Mr Plunkett said he was relieved he had been able to save the peak.

“We didn’t think it was going to work, I grabbed it with the thumb on the bucket and brought it down before it shattered. I was pretty stoked to get it down in one whole piece without it breaking, it will keep a few locals happy,” Mr Plunkett said.

Among onlookers was Marjorie Collins, who has been the library committee secretary since 1959.

“It’s a sad day, but it’s inevitable really, after the quakes,” Mrs Collins said.

Library chairperson Eleanor Marr said Harmer’s had done a “wonderful job” in donating its time and equipment for the

By Brendan Manning A domestic Air New Zealand flight was aborted shortly after take-off yesterday due to concerns over one of its engines.

A spokeswoman for the airline said flight NZ508 travelling from Christchurch to Auckland returned to Christchurch shortly after take-off.

The pilots opted to return to Christchurch as a precautionary measure after a cockpit indicator light briefly illuminated once they reached cruise altitude.

Engineers have since inspected the Boeing 737 aircraft which was cleared to return to service.

Passengers were transferred to another service which left Christchurch at 10am.

A passenger on the plane said the flight boarded as normal and left Christchurch on time at 8.55am.

“Just after our take-off we were told that there was an indication of a slight problem with one of the engines [and] we had to go back to Christchurch.”

The plane had only been in the air for about five minutes before it turned back, the passenger said. There were no obvious problems with the aeroplane, she added.

It had been good to retain the peak, which had been able to be saved due to it being four bricks deep, so more solid than other areas of the building’s frontage. It would be added to other items the committee had re-

tained from the building to go in a new combined library and museum building on the library site.

“The architect will work with anything we save,” Mrs Marr said.

Methven Historical Society chairperson Kathryn McKendry and Mrs Marr are relieved

to have the demolitions behind them after a three-year wait, which included a battle with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

“We are now looking forward to the future and how we can provide library and museum services in Methven,” Mrs Marr said.

Two major South Island tourist routes shut off in this week’s stormy weather are reopening.

State Highway 6, between Haast and Makarora on the West Coast, is expected to reopen this afternoon, the Transport Agency said.

Crews were currently cleaning up the road, which had initially been closed due to a large slip earlier this week. Snow and heavy rain on Friday night caused further delays.

Transport Agency West Coast area manager Mark Pinner said the slip face had remained fairly stable overnight.

Further south, travellers were once again enjoying the use of the Milford Sound road.

State Highway 94 from the Hollyford turn-off was reopened yesterday.

Changes mean lost revenue

Ratepayers will end up carrying an additional financial load when the Government changes its rules around using development levies to fund key council projects.

Ashburton District Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel believes the rules will change this year and while that will mean a $1500 reduction in levies for new home builders, it will also mean a big pool of lost revenue for the council.

Of the levies currently collected for new builds, $1500 from each is tagged for three key infrastructural projects –

the art gallery and museum, the EA Networks stadium project and the planned extension of the council’s headquarters.

The changed rules will see $280,000 taken out of this funding pool and that gap will have to be filled from rates, Mr Dalziel said.

“Certainly, what they’re planning is good for new home builders because it makes this more affordable but the question then remains, how do we fill the gap? Logically it’s from rates.”

And there could be more bad news for ratepayers over one key project, the partially built art gallery/museum complex.

This is now likely to run over budget.

There were several factors contributing to the increased costs including the delay in starting construction and increased costs in the construction sector because of increasing demand in Christchurch.

While a 5 per cent contingency had been built into the museum project, Mr Dalziel anticipates the actual over-run will be higher.

He has signalled his concerns to district councillors and mayor Angus McKay and said while it was news no one liked to hear, the sooner the issue was addressed the more likely the

chance that some costs could be reeled in. Every aspect of the project would be under intense scrutiny and negotiations were already under way with contractors.

At this stage it was difficult to quantify the impact of increasing costs and the loss of development contributions, he said.

“My expectation is we’ll be value engineering and trying to get our costs down wherever we can.

“It’s not a message I have any pleasure in delivering but it does reflect where things are at in Canterbury at the moment,” he said.

Warning for novel Controversial children’s book of the year Into The River will carry a warning that it is suitable for readers aged 16 years and older.

The Office of Film and Literature Classification has delivered its findings on Ted Dawe’s novel, saying people might be offended but the book would remain unrestricted. It recommends, however, that the book be read by a mature audience. The classification decision is open for public review until October 9.

Blaze under control A “significant” blaze that broke out in a four-storey building in central Hamilton is now under control.

The fire ignited in the kitchen of a restaurant on the first floor of the building on Ward Lane. A fire service spokesman said no one was trapped or injured, and crews had the fire under control. “They are ventilating the building now and looking for further hot spots,” he said.

Camper, van collide A man has been evacuated by rescue helicopter after his camper van collided with a bridge on the Desert Road yesterday. Police and other emergency services are at the scene of the collision on State Highway 1 near Rangipo. The 65-year-old man received head and neck injuries and was taken to Waikato Hospital. Police said the camper van was overtaking another vehicle when it hit the bridge. The police serious crash unit is investigating.

Second man charged over worker’s death

By Calida Smylie A second man has been charged with the murder of Otago farm worker Justin McFarlane, who died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police working on the investigation, named Operation Steelers, arrested a 22-year-old Oamaru man late Saturday afternoon. He will appear in the Dunedin District Court today charged with murder.

His arrest follows Friday’s arrest of 18-year-old Steven Kenneth Boskell, of Palm-

erston, who was also charged with murder.

Mr McFarlane, 35, was found dead in his home in rural Elderslie, about 10 kilometres from Oamaru, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The alarm was raised by a fellow dairy worker who called at the house after Mr McFarlane did not arrive at work. His car was found burnt out about 25km away.

The investigation is focussing on establishing the recent movements of Mr McFarlane and the events leading up to his

death, as well as interviewing a number of people with connections to him, police said.

On Saturday afternoon, police executed search warrants at two homes in Oamaru.

During the searches - which the Armed Offenders Squad helped with - police uncovered a number of items of interest to the investigation. These are being forensically examined, said Acting Detective Inspector Colin Blackie.

Police said they still want talk with a number of people who either know about circum-

stances surrounding Mr McFarlane’s death or who appear to have been involved in some way.

A forensic examination of the silver Nissan Skyline car thought to be linked to Mr McFarlane’s death and the scene examination at Mr McFarlane’s house in Pine Hill Road are continuing.

Police will not release post mortem examination results until they have been confirmed by a pathologist.

About 40 police staff are working on the inquiry.- APNZ

Two people were rescued in backto-back rescues by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter on Saturday afternoon. The first rescue involved a 69-year-old Kaiterteri man who was winched out of the Heaphy Track. He had been mountain biking with a group of others and had fallen and injured himself during their ride and was unable to continue. Due to the dense bush cover an intensive care paramedic was winched into the Aorere shelter where the man was treated on scene for his injuries. The helicopter was then dispatched to Kenepuru Sound, Marlborough to assist an unwell 75-year-old woman.

Hit by digger bucket A man aged in his 60s has been flown to Palmerston North Hospital with serious injuries after being hit by the bucket of a digger. Emergency services were alerted to the accident in the Manawatu Gorge at about 11.30am, a spokesman said. “We understand it was somebody working on a railway line. He was winched out by the Palmerston North [Rescue] Helicopter and transported to Palmerston North Hospital in a serious condition.”

Contract continues; McMahon goes

Safer Ashburton employees have been delivered a mixed bag of news.

On a positive note the contract to continue to deliver restorative justice services in Mid Canterbury has been reinstated.

However, former co-ordinator Kevin McMahon won’t be picking up the reins again.

As part of a Ministry of Justice shake-up, all existing providers were required to reapply for a new contract, set to kick in on October 1.

Ashburton formed part of a consortium of South Island providers, which included Oamaru,

Timaru, Ashburton, Christchurch, Rangiora, Blenheim and the West Coast, who made a joint application.

Safer Ashburton general manager Kevin Clifford said it was a relief to be moving forward after several weeks of uncertainty.

“The ministry has put more funding, $4 million over the next two years, into restorative justice, primarily because of the success of the programme,” he said.

As a result providers are expected to double the number of cases they deal with. Nationally 1800 court cases were dealt with under the restorative justice process last year; the expecta-

tion is this number will jump to 3600.

However Mr Clifford said the Ashburton service was already punching above its weight, and the expectation would be in the range of a 15-20 per cent hike in numbers.

With a reduction in reoffending rates of about 13 per cent, Mr Clifford said the programme had been working well locally.

“That’s a reduction in the number of victims, a reduction in the number of people coming through court, in legal aid costs and policing time – it’s a huge saving,” he said.

service in Ashburton, co-ordinator Mr McMahon was out of a job and joined Christchurch probation services. Safer Ashburton learned yesterday that he had decided to stay put.

Mr Clifford said Mr McMahon had made an invaluable contribution to restorative justice in Ashburton, bringing his former experience as a police officer into play.

The restorative justice co-ordinator’s job is advertised in today’s Guardian. While the new appointment is under consideration, the service will be provided

by Mary Bailey, who is the local service’s administrator, supported by staff from Timaru.

Long wait for Steiny to come home Book on murder a ‘joke’

Two-and-a-half years after their dog went missing Richard Bluett and his son Ryan are still waiting for him to come home.

Steiny the wire-haired Jack Russell Terrier was three-anda-half when he went missing from Methven.

Richard and Ryan have recently posted a $1200 reward for information leading to Steiny’s successful recovery.

They believe he is still alive, and could be somewhere in Mid Canterbury or the wider South Island.

Richard said it was around midday on a hot nor’west Saturday on February 5, 2011, when Steiny disappeared from outside his home on Methven Chertsey Road, where Ryan operated a ski lodge.

“It’s almost like he was plucked from the boundary,” he said.

There were a couple of clues in following days. A Methven supermarket checkout operator reported a man saying a Jack Russell terrier had befriended his children that weekend, and a Methven policeman told Ryan who was reporting Steiny missing that there had been an anonymous and obscure message referring to a wire-haired Jack Russell Terrier left on his answerphone, but there was no further information and nothing to follow up on.

The father and son searched far and wide, including under houses and across paddocks.

Steiny had been a dog with plenty of appeal and it is Richard’s gut feeling that he may have ended up in the hands of someone who wanted to keep him as their pet, whether it be

an elderly couple who had not heard about the campaign to find him, or a family with young children who perhaps could not face giving him back.

On the afternoon he went missing primary school cricket teams were playing in the Methven Domain, so there were many families around on

the day, he said.

The pair have not bought another dog, and believe they will one day get Steiny back.

“Someone some day will say something,” Richard said.

Kylee Guy’s sister has dismissed a new book about the 2010 murder of her brother-in-law Scott Guy. Journalist Mike White’s book titled Who Killed Scott Guy? is an account of the successful defence of murder accused Ewen Macdonald. Another book, from the perspective of Scott Guy’s family, should hit shelves in about a month.

Macdonald was acquitted of shooting dead his brother-inlaw Scott in July 2010.

Kylee’s sister Chanelle Bullock said: “This book is an obvious grasp at straws to make Ewen look normal. This book is an absolute joke.”

The book details the crime scene, the work of the defence team, holes in the police case and the resulting trial. It includes excerpts from Macdonald’s diary, and states the jury got it right.

One diary excerpt reveals Macdonald’s relief at the verdict. He wrote that he prepared for the worst and said a silent prayer before going back into the courtroom.

Scott’s father Bryan Guy told the Herald on Sunday he’d heard Kim Hill’s interview with White yesterday on Radio New Zealand. White had not approached the family while writing the book. “It is a bit odd,” Guy said.

Climber’s body recovered

BY CALIDA SMYLIE The body of a male climber who fell to his death on Saturday night has been recovered by rescuers, along with his climbing party of three who spent a freezing night on a Mt Cook cliff.

The man - a British national in his early thirties who was working in New Zealand - fell around 609 metres near the Mt Sefton Bivvy above the Mueller Glacier, said Inspector Dave Gaskin.

The accident happened as the climber was not qualified to attempt the ascent, and did not

have the right equipment with him, Mr Gaskin said.

“It was a jolly big fall which he couldn’t have survived.”

There was nothing the three others in the climbing party could do as they were roped to him, and they were forced to spend the night on the cliff face until rescuers reached them, said Mr Gaskin.

“They were extremely cold and wet and were flown out to the Mt Cook base by helicopter,” he said.

All three were checked by paramedics at the base and are uninjured.

Emergency services were alerted to the accident late on Saturday, but due to failing light and bad weather conditions they could not attempt a rescue.

Three members of the Aoraki Mt Cook Alpine Rescue Team started the rescue at 8am yesterday and were off the mountain by 2pm.

“The rescue team have had a very busy weekend and have performed admirably. They are a fine bunch of young men and women who do their job in extreme circumstances,” Mr Gaskin said.

This tragedy was the second

of two deaths on Mt Cook at the weekend, following the death of a New Zealand climber who fell on Friday morning.

The 36-year-old, who had been living in Melbourne, slipped and fell about 200 metres down a steep ice gully as he was approaching the Tasman Saddle Hut, police said.

He had been planning a fourday ski tour of the area with his brother and was alive when rescuers reached him.

The rescue team had to carry the man by stretcher down a glacier, walking two hours to reach a rescue helicopter. He was pro-

nounced dead by paramedics on his arrival to Mt Cook Village.

Neither man who died this weekend will be named until family members are notified.

Police are warning other climbers who intend to tackle Mt Cook not to get complacent and to remember it’s still wintry.

“Mt Cook National Park is an extreme area and we are still experiencing winter conditions, so don’t bother going out if you don’t have the right equipment,” said Mr Gaskin.

“Be prepared for all conditions.”

Van on fire The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was busy on Saturday.

At 12.15am, members responded to a van on fire in the driveway of a Kitchener Street home.

Chief Alan Burgess said the van was destroyed in the blaze, which cracked windows in the house and melted spouting.

It was unknown at this stage whether the fire was suspicious, or if there was a genuine cause such as an electrical fault.

About 6.30pm the brigade responded to benches on fire at Lake Hood, but the fire was out on arrival.

Woman barred from bathhouse due to moko

BY MORGAN TAIT A New Zealand woman has been barred from a Japanese bathhouse because of her facial ta moko.

Erana Te Haeata Brewerton, the 60-year-old daughter of the late Dame Katerina Mataira, tried to visit the hot spring in Hokkaido last Sunday while in the country to speak at an indigenous languages conference.

The incident has caused con-

troversy in Japan, known for its tough line on tattoos because of their links to yakuza, organised crime syndicates, and has seen one senior cabinet minister say greater respect needed to be shown for foreign cultures.

An official from the public bath told Kyodo News agency the decision had been made to avoid making other guests uncomfortable.

“Even if it is traditional culture, a typical person cannot

judge the context behind the tattoos,” the official said.

The facility always denied entry to people with tattoos, as some customers were scared of them.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters the incident was concerning in light of the country hosting the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Japan Times reported.

“It is important to respect the cultures of foreign coun-

tries, considering we will host the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and expect many visitors ... to come to Japan.”

The incident has been reported widely by Japanese media, and also appeared in coverage in Austria, Australia, and Canada.

Mrs Brewerton was still in Japan yesterday, and a family member told he Herald she did not wish to be contacted by reporters.

Horror smash

BY DEBBIE PORTEOUS A Dunedin 20-year-old was killed and 25-year-old local woman remains seriously injured in Dunedin Hospital after a horror smash near Allanton that destroyed two cars early Saturday.

Madison Luke Ford-Greeves died at the scene of the 12.40am head-on collision on Centre Rd. He was driving one of the cars.

The 25-year-old female driver of the other car remains in hospital, still too seriously ill yesterday to speak with police.

Ford-Greeves’ 20-year-old male passenger received minor injuries and has been released from hospital, as has the 18-year-old female passenger of the other vehicle, who received moderate injuries.

Sergeant Ed Baker said one of the vehicles was taking part in the regular Friday night “dragtrain”.

Police name homicide victim

BY TEUILA FUATAI Police say the man killed in Rangiora on Friday night was 51-year-old Tony John Lochhead.

Mr Lochhead lived on White Street. Police believe he died following an altercation at his home on Friday night.

A second man was also injured in the incident and was taken to Christchurch Hospital for treatment.

He has since been discharged, and was helping police with their inquiries.

Police said in a statement yesterday that Mr Lochhead’s body was removed from the scene on Saturday night.

A post mortem examination was performed yesterday, however results were not being released.

The homicide investigation was ongoing, and a scene examination at Mr Lochhead’s White

Street residence was expected to be completed today, Detective inspector David Long said.

Several people of interest had been interviewed.

Sightings of a silver Subaru, which police believe may be relevant to the investigation, have also been reported.

The car was abandoned near the motorway, south of Rangiora, shortly after the incident, Mr Long said.

“We believe it is possible that one or more occupants of that vehicle has hitch-hiked towards Christchurch after leaving the vehicle.”

Anyone who may have picked up a hitch-hiker on or near the motorway between the KaiapoiRangiora area and Christchurch between 9.30 and 10.30pm on Friday has been asked to contact police.

Those with information should call Christchurch police on (03) 3637400.

Sock monkeys a hit with hospital A group of six Chertsey School children travelled to Christchurch Hospital’s children’s ward to deliver sock monkeys made by them and their peers. “The nurses and staff thought that the monkeys were fantastic and were very grateful for the donation,” principal Kerrin Lester said.

“It’s amazing what you can do with a pair of socks,” she added.

Meridian sale - Govt blinks

By EdWard roonEy The Government last week postponed an announcement on the sale of shares in Meridian Energy, sparking doubts about whether the sell-off will go ahead on schedule in November.

Opposition MPs believe the sale has been stalled by embarrassing revelations about the public bailout of Tiwai Pt aluminium smelter, Meridian’s biggest electricity customer.

It is understood the Treasury had been due to announce details of a share “pre-offer”on Thursday or Friday, but abruptly pulled the announcement after news broke of its concerns about the $30m bailout.

On the streets of Auckland on Saturday, views were mixed on the impact of the delay.

Simon Dromgool, an engineer from Tauranga, said it would not deter him from buying shares.

Julie Huckson, a student accountant from Hawke’s Bay, said she had analysed Meridian’s figures as part of an accounting project and didn’t think it looked like an attractive offer.

“We’ll be making a followup announcement about the Meridian share offer timetable shortly.”

On Thursday, in the face of intense scrutiny from Labour and the Greens, a document “dump”revealed the Treasury advised against making a payment to Tiwai Pt because it would “result in a significant transfer of value from New Zealanders to Pacific Aluminium and Rio Tinto shareholders.”

Last month, after threatening to close the smelters, the owners agreed to a new electricity deal with Meridian - propped up by the Government’s $30m sweetener.

A schoolboy has suffered a horror eye injury after being splashed in the face with acid during a science experiment.

Glendowie College student Ryan Edwards was in a chemistry class when he dropped a bottle of concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCL). He was not wearing safety glasses.

The talented violinist was immediately treated in class by a school nurse before being taken to Starship Hospital by ambulance and later transferred to the Green Lane Hospital eye ward.

College board of trustees chairman Shayne Blake said the school was investigating the cause of the accident, which happened two weeks ago. “We are very concerned and we wish Ryan all the best for his recovery but we have to complete our internal investigation before we can comment on why it happened,” Blake said.

“I can say young Ryan was injured by an acid splash in the eye. He was immediately treated at the eyewash station in class and was then admitted to hospital and, as far as I know, he is still in hospital.”

The school policy was for students to wear safety glasses during experiments. They were available but Ryan was not wearing any.

Blake said the teacher in class at the time acted quickly to assist Ryan.

“The teacher is a very experienced teacher who is devastated by what happened. There has never been an accident in the class before.”

Blake said the school had been getting regular updates from Ryan’s parents.

Pedestrian dies A pedestrian has died after being hit by a truck near Feilding.

Police said the man was on State Highway 3, between Sanson and Palmerston North, when he was struck by the truck. Police Central Communications acting inspector Bruce Mackay said emergency services were called to the incident at about 2.15pm yesterday. The man died at the scene, he said.

Four-wheel-drive rolls One person has died and two others have been injured in a crash yesterday in a forestry area near Turangi. Emergency services were called to the accident on Kepa Road just before 12.30pm. A fourwheel drive vehicle rolled with the three occupants in it, police said.

The two survivors were not badly hurt. The police Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene.

Prisoner stabbed A maximum security prisoner is in a Status 1 condition with life threatening injuries following a stabbing at Auckland’s Paremoremo prison yesterday.

Police say the incident started just before 10am when three inmates attacked one other in a cell. The fight spilled out onto the landing of the cell block where a second inmate was also assaulted. Both victims received a beating and were stabbed with homemade weapons. The attack ceased when prison officers intervened. The first victim received a serious stab wound to the neck and was taken to Auckland hospital. He remains in a serious condition. The second victim received first aid at the prison for less serious injuries. The three inmates responsible for the attack have been identified and secured.

Fall through roof A man in his late teens is in a critical condition in hospital after he fell through the glass verandah roof on the Work and Income building in Watt St on Friday night.

Whanganui police, called around 8.30pm, found him lying on the concrete at the building’s entrance, surrounded by shattered glass.

Unknown injuries A woman has been transported to Palmerston North Hospital with unknown injuries after the vehicle she was travelling in left the road.

The accident involving a single station wagon occurred on State Highway 57 just outside of Tokomaru. Constable Jarrod Ranish said it appeared the vehicle had come around a bend and veered into a ditch. “We received a call around 4.30pm this afternoon.

A woman was trapped and has been cut out by the Tokomaru Fire Brigade. Her injuries are unknown but she is now being transported to Palmerston North Hospital.”

Constable Ranish said the woman was a passenger possibly travelling with her teenage children but it had not yet been established who was driving. “At this stage we need to make inquiries.”

BY BRENDAN MANNING Newly elected Labour Party Leader David Cunliffe said Labour would be a fighting team, ready to take on the National Government under his leadership.

The MP for New Lynn met with about 40 close supporters and party faithful at his humble electorate office after the leadership election result was announced yesterday.

Anticipation before the announcement rose as the office quickly filled. Mr Cunliffe’s absence was painfully apparent and those querying where he was were told he was refining his speech notes at home.

His entrance was met with applause, minutes after the announcement was made.

Mr Cunliffe told those waiting that the time had come for a new beginning for Labour and New Zealand.

“Today, our people have spoken.

They have entrusted to all of us to join together and to fight for a better future for all New Zealanders.

“Tomorrow morning, we start our election campaign against the Key Government. We are going to be fighting for a fair chance and a fair share for all New Zealanders.”

Mr Cunliffe said if the best qualities of all three leadership candidates were combined, the National Government had a problem.

He thanked his family, friends and Labour Party members who had supported his leadership bid.

much.” The only way he could repay his supporters was to become the leader they believed he could be, he said.

His wife Karen and his two young sons stood proudly beside him as he made his victory speech.

Mr Cunliffe said he was grateful for his family’s support. “It’s not an easy job, and it’s going to be tough on them and I’m very grateful for their support.”

He stopped to hug them before fighting back tears and continuing his speech.

Both Mr Jones and Mr Robertson would enjoy “a very senior role” in the Labour Party under his leadership, Mr Cunliffe said.

“This is not a split caucus ... this is a united caucus.”

Mr Cunliffe said he had not yet made any decisions about portfolios or rankings.

However, he confirmed that raising taxes would be an election policy. “You bet.”

He said he was yet to decide whether he will take on a portfolio.

Local board chair Denise Yates said she was “over the moon” with the leadership announcement.

“We’re absolutely ecstatic.”

Young Labour West member Joseph Foster said Mr Cunliffe understood the issues that faced youth “and I think he’s going to really take a stance on those issues”.

Mr Foster said he hoped to see a bigger emphasis placed on raising the minimum wage and helping young people find work.

Ellerslie Labour Electorate Committee chairwoman Barbara Hill said she admired Mr Cunliffe’s strong commitment towards social justice.

“I think that one of his skills is going to be to bring in the voters who haven’t been voting, because the causes that he’s raising are the ones that are of concern to them.”

Labour MP Moana Mackey said the party finally had a clear mandate with Mr Cunliffe at the helm.

The unity between the caucus, party members and affiliated unions behind a leader would be the biggest difference from David Shearer’s leadership, she said.

“It’s been a difficult 20 months for us and we’ve paid for it in the polls. People want to see a party that’s united, not divided.”

Who will be mayor?

et the games begin.

That could be the catch phrase this week as the three candidates are ramping up their bids for the mayoral chain during the Guardian mayoral debate at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Wednesday night.

Some people have commented over the past week that the upcoming election is nearing almost unnoticed, aside from the sporadic campaign signs around the district.

The Guardian therefore has taken the initiative to raise the profile of the candidates, both for the Ashburton Urban Ward and the Ashburton Trust contests, by running submissions for those who chose to take up our invitation in last Saturday’s election special.

With the Guardian reaching over 75 per cent of the voting public in the district we hope that this initiative will at least give the voters an inkling about what the contenders stand for.

Local elections are notorious for their low turn-out, even though Mid Canterbury traditionally has a higher turnout than the national average.

The low participation in our local democracy could be attributed to a lack of knowledge about the candidates. Many of us struggle to identify members of parliament and the average councillor is even more obscure.

Hopefully the Guardian election special will have raised the candidates’ profiles and sparked a wider interest that may result in a higher turn-out.

Local councillors may be unknown but can have a huge impact on your lives. Just look at major decisions around the stadium, the art gallery, the bridge, roading and traffic lights and it is hard to deny their influence.

Naturally, the newly elected mayor will also play a big role in shaping the district, so make sure you come along on Wednesday to see the three contenders debate the local issues.

Thanks to the wonderful response from our readers, the Guardian staff received a wide range of questions from which we selected the most popular subjects.

The candidates will be asked their opinions on a wide variety, including rates, roads, communication, referendums, the rebuild and alcohol policies.

lmost certainly by the time this piece sees the light of your day, we shall - inevitably - “be coming to terms with” two significant events, the one, in my opinion, much more significant than the other.

In darkest San Francisco “Emirates - to whom we are cloyingly grateful - Team NZ will almost once again have their hands on the much-distorted - grotesque even - 2013 version of the America’s Cup, while in Wellington the new leader of the Labour Party will have been chosen and introduced to his diehard supporters as well as to those other Labour people far less certain that they have chosen the right man for the job.

Hoist with his own petard.

If, indeed, Mr Larry “Oracle” Ellison has been, as it were, hoist with his own petard and his attempt to price virtually all opposition out of the race gazumped by a mix of New Zealand bloody-mindedness, $34 million New Zealand taxpayers’ dollars and yet more Middle Eastern generosity, he will have only himself to blame. No one will cry for Larry.

By turning the venerable race, once - though not recently - admired for its classic and supposedly sporting values, into an aerodynamic, “jet-engined”, technological, flat-tack slug-fest he rid himself of all but one serious challenger, a challenger who has now called his bluff, caught him cheating and seen him off.

Now, perhaps, the “noble art of sailing” will be allowed to reappear on the sunny reaches

Such a scenario would also be guaranteed to bring the Auckland economy - with its famous trickle-down effect to the rest of us - the boost, which is the justification for the whole inflated shebang. Surely we have seen the last of these nautical oddities brought about by the eccentricities of brainless billionaires.

Simultaneously and more sombrely, we shall be adjusting to the prospect of the favoured new Labour leader, Jones, Cunliffe or Robertson. The ques-

tion the qualified voters should have asked themselves first, foremost and finally, “Has this man the ability, the mana and the sheer weight of presence to lead us to glorious victory over loathed Key and his nit-picking Nats at next year’s election?”

No other thoughts should have distracted them from that absolutely rigid bottom line.

The last two “undemocratically” chosen leaders having been embarrassingly short of the wherewithal to bring about that yearned for result, could it be that despite “opening the vote to all” they might make it a hattrick of doomed decisions?

That it was not possible to join ranks behind a single candidate and appoint him unopposed was disappointment enough but to have three

speaks only of future factionfighting, division and uncertainty.

Shane Jones. My man with the winning mana has to be Shane Jones, legendary, “warts and all”. His contributions to the various gatherings have shown overwhelmingly how he can keep to Party line but without losing an ounce of his popular, television appeal. Eyeball to eyeball with Shane, Mr Key would be confronted by something rather more telling than two dead fish.

We sit on the cusp of a shift in focus for our senior students.

September started with the annual Secondary Schools’ Winter Sports Tournament Week and will finish with a clear focus on NCEA examinations.

Over 150 students represented the College in twelve teams covering six different sporting codes. As in previous years many of our teams travelled, with the furthest away being Indoor Bowls in Wellington and Basketball in both Dunedin and Nelson. I had the privilege of watching many of these teams play one of their games and I was once again impressed by the qualities that our students demonstrate both on and off “the field”. There were also other championships and events our students competed in, including Chess, with the College now holding the title of South Island Champions.

I also spent the weekend in Rotorua with our 1st XV (Press Cup) Rugby team who competed with three other coeducational schools for national honours.

Sport, like the Arts, is often a microcosm of the human experience with all of the elements of hard work, stress and hope, disappointment or celebration, teamwork and individual effort.

Swimming Programme – Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Funding Funding through the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, Allsports Activity Fund has allowed two College students, Levon Wilson and Kevin Daly, to receive a swimming lesson each week.

The SLSU (Student Learning Support Unit) acknowledges and is very appreciative of the Community Pool’s staff support in helping these students to develop safe water practises and learn other skills which will provide confidence in deep water.

Levon Wilson, being supported floating, (pictured below left) with Pool Tutor, Jess, says “I am enjoying swimming again and the weekly lessons are helping me to use my arms and legs. The weights are helping develop and improve my muscle tone. I appreciate this opportunity”.

Year 12 Physical Education Students to Primary Schools Year 12 Physical Education students are able to gain NCEA Credits by choosing a sport, planning a series of lessons to develop skills, and coaching a group of local primary school pupils. Evaluation of how successful their ‘lessons’ were are also an important part of the programme.

Currently, the three College Year 12 classes, taught by Karen McKenzie and Claire Tappin, are teaching at St Joseph’s and Hampstead Schools. The young coaches learn to cope with a range of abilities within each group and sometimes work with children with disabilities, different age groups, language barriers and they also manage large groups all running in different directions!

Our students always return to College saying that teaching is not as easy as they thought and, in fact, it can be very challenging but that they have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

This year’s classes are certainly most capable and have stepped up to the role as coaches very well. Kiwisport Leadership lessons continue until the end of this term.

Year 13 Tourism Field Trip – Tourism Industry Opportunities The purpose of this annual trip, which took place on Friday 06 September, is to enlighten students as to future training and job prospects in the tourism industry.

Students visited the Antarctic Centre where the students were spoken to about the expectations of employers in the tourism industry. They also viewed displays, including the penguins and the “cold room” (pictured right, left to right) – Megan Davies and Finau Fakapelea in the ‘cold weather’ gear.

At the Sir George Seymour Tourism and Travel School students toured the facilities and were again advised about courses available and training paths.

The CPIT visit included looking over the specialist training facilities before settling down to enjoy a meal which was cooked and served by Year 13 students who spend two days a week learning in the CPIT Hospitality section.

2013 Secondary Schools’ Winter Tournament Week

Ashburton College 1st XV Rugby Team – Outstanding Season

Ashburton College had ten teams involved in Tournament Week this year. Full results and additional photos are included in our AshColl Extra News.

The efforts of all teams are acknowledged as is the considerable input of all coaches and managers. Ashburton College is indebted to the time many community members and staff give to providing opportunities for our students.

Key results are – Chess Team 1st at the South Island Chess Tournament, Ashburton.

Junior Girls’ Basketball 3rd at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Zone 4 Tournament in Dunedin.

This season has been one of outstanding results, and unknown territory in the College’s history, with the team achieving Top 8 status in the prestigious Press Cup and winning the South Island 1st XV Co-ed School’s final against Dunstan High School, 34-10.

International Department Director Michelle Hosking tells us that a group of four Japanese and one German international students visited Barbara Nordqvist at their farm in Tinwald. Barbara showed the students how to feed the lambs and gave a tour around the farm to see other new-born lambs, ducks and chickens.

It was great for the group to learn how much work goes into looking after the lambs, especially as they are currently being fed four times a day.

The group was most appreciative of their warm welcome and to Barbara for taking time out of her busy day to share a snippet of farming life and new experiences for the students.

Year 13 Biology to Marine Studies Centre, Portobello Twenty two Year 13 Biology students and their teachers, Denis Saunders and Carolyn Clough, were on the road at 5:00am on Sunday morning 08 September, heading to Portobello on the Otago Peninsula for their annual Field Trip.

The field work completed over three days on this trip enables students to undertake work for an NCEA Level 3 Biology Achievement Standard investigating the niche of a crab species.

On arrival in Portobello at the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre, it was straight into the work with students learning about the classification and morphology of the common crab species on the rocky shore at Portobello, with the help of NZMSC staff and graduate students. Then, it was outside to survey the rocky shore and record the abiotic and biotic factors that were present inthe habitat.

Later that afternoon, students were introduced to a wide range of projects that they could undertake for their individual investigations and they wrote hypotheses, organised equipment, and began to construct methods and data tables.

For the next two days, the budding biologists worked hard to complete as many trials and replicates of their investigations as they could. The investigations focused on the behaviours of two common species, the half crab and the common purple shore crab, and their responses to changes in oxygen concentration, feeding, water depth, light intensity, temperature and salinity.

Some students chose to investigate the turn-over response or feeding preference of the half crab in response to these abiotic changes, whilst others looked at re-sheltering or kinesis behaviours. (Pictured above, left to right) Josh Aberhart, Josh Heney, Jake Beeman, Nick Ralston.

The personal growth and development of practical skills was immense for all of the students and they all gained an appreciation for the reality and intensity of scientific investigations.

Whilst in Portobello, the group stayed on Quarantine Island which was an experience in itself. Each day the group was transported to and from the island by boat. A few hardy souls braved the cool water temperatures for a brief daily swim due to the need to save water on the island and because there was only one shower!

We would like to make special mention of Josh from Pearson’s Coachlines who transported the group back from Portobello safely in the appalling weather conditions on Tuesday night.

Congratulations National Champion – New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Swimming Championships 2013 Caitlin Johnstone (pictured centre with her gold medal) National Champion in the 15 Year Old Girls’ 50m Breaststroke, at the Championships held in Hamilton recently.

Not only is Caitlin National Champion but her win was in a meet record time of 35.52 seconds.

Additionally Caitlin also placed second in the 100 Metre 15 Year Old Girls’ Breaststroke.

Indoor Bowls Cait Bassett placed 3rd equal in the Plate Event at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Indoor Bowls Championships and – 5th equal at New Zealand Junior Championships (Under 18). Both events were held in Wellington.

Senior Girls’ Basketball 5th at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Zone 4 Tournament in Nelson.

This placing has qualified the team for the National Basketball Tournament in Palmerston North from 30 September – 05 October. .

Top Eight – Press Cup / South Island Co-Ed School Winners

Third placed - New Zealand Top 4 Tournament, Rotorua

The team headed north, from 5-8 September, without three year veterans Romeo and Toafa Touli and outstanding No 8 Shalom Pulu who had broken his leg the previous week. They were replaced with players of the future Logan Flett, Daniel Harper-Grey and Angus Mackenzie.

The team played Auckland-based Tangaroa College to be at 7-all at half-time but Tangaroa’s strength showed in the second half to gain a final score of 52-7, showing the difference in the standard of rugby between the North and South Islands. Tangaroa went on to win the Press Cup. College then played-off for third place against Wairapara College from Masterton, a team soundly beaten in their semi-final by Manurewa High School from South Auckland.

The team started well with three tries in the first half by Nete Caucau (2 tries) and Setariki Koroitamana, with a conversion to Nathan McCloy to take the lead out to 17-3. A great second half try to Nete Caucau and conversion to Nathan McCloy pushed the lead out to 24-15 and a great victory.

Coach Shane Enright thanks the overseas players Seta, Shalom and Nete for their efforts this season and the Year 13 students who will be leaving the team this year and to Audra of Allenton Physiotherapy for her time with the team and to Manager James McCloy for support and organisation.

Ashburton College Girls’ 1st XV Rugby Team – Outstanding Season Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Competition The Ashburton College Girls’ 1st XV team has had an outstanding year. The team won every match in the first round of the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Competition, except their first against Waitaki Girls’ High School. The squad has also taken on a number of Year 9 and 10 students who have developed brilliantly throughout this competition, filling in the gaps left by last year’s departed Year 13 students.

Riley Claydon-Wade and Grace Lima have made real progress this year, and our top try scorers were Nicole Purdom and Sweet Lisala. That said, the contribution from every team member is what made this squad so special this year.

St Kevin’s Girls’ Rugby Festival: Runners-Up At this Festival in Oamaru, over the July term holidays, playing three days consecutive rugby including a Sevens Tournament, has helped to develop and bond the squad further.

After the term holidays, the squad carried on its near flawless season only to narrowly miss out on the silverware in the final against Waitaki. It was an exhilarating match so closely contested that it could have been anyone’s at the end.

Coaches Geoff Wright and John Harrison, and Manager Ryan Walsh, are proud to have worked with a squad of such talented young athletes.

The hallmarks of this year’s Girls’ Rugby in Ashburton have been discipline, dedication and drive. Well done girls, it was a great season – let’s make the next one even better!

Senior A Netball Season The 2013 Senior A Netball Team has had a busy season, playing in the local Mid Canterbury Netball Club Competition and also the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Wednesday afternoon competition.

The pinnacle event this season was the South Island Secondary Schools’ Tournament held in Christchurch during Tournament Week, where 80 teams competed at Hagley Park.

At this tournament the team came together very well and the girls put everything they have learnt this season out on court.

They represented Ashburton College with pride and played some very good netball. The key to their success was their amazing determination, their ability to respond and improve aspects of their game quickly and their excellent full team defensive effort.

The team fell just short of their goal of making the top 16 as they had two competitive but tough games in their initial pool. However they rallied well and worked very hard in the remaining six games to get a place in the A Grade Plate Final playing for 17/18th position against Craighead Diocesan School, Timaru.

Finishing 18th in the A Grade was a pleasing result for this dedicated group of netballers and it assures them of their A Grade position for 2014.

College Chess Team Continues To Win – South Island Champions

Coach Ken Pow praises the Ashburton College Chess team which has continued its very successful season by winning the South Island Trophy for Champion Team, at the tournament held in Ashburton recently.

Wins against Otago Boys’ A and B Teams, Burnside High School and Roncalli College, plus a draw against defending champions Christchurch Boys’ High School was enough to allow the team to take out the title.

College’s 41 points put them ahead of Otago Boys’ High School (39 points) and Christchurch Boys’ High School (37 points).

people in the isolated community of Jamestown wanted to stay to watch over their homes.

Authorities made clear that residents who chose not to leave might not get another chance for a while. Rescuers won’t go back for people who insist on staying, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said.

“We’re not trying to force anyone from their home. We’re not trying to be forceful, but we’re trying to be very factual and definitive about the consequences of their decision, and

we hope that they will come down,” he said.

Special education teacher Brian Shultz, 38, was torn about leaving his Jamestown home.

“I was thinking about staying. I could have lasted at least a year. I have a lot of training in wilderness survival,” he said, adding that he probably had enough beer to last the whole time.

Across the foothills, rescuers made progress against the floodwaters. But they were still unable to go up many narrow

canyon roads that were either underwater or washed out.

On Saturday, the surge of water reached the plains east of the mountains, cutting off more communities and diverting some rescue operations.

Four people were confirmed dead. Hundreds of others have not been heard from in the flood zone, which has grown to cover portions of an area nearly the size of Connecticut.

Police expected to find more bodies as the full scope of damage emerges.

Tunnel collapses Officials say a tunnel collapse in a coal mine in Afghanistan’s north has killed at least 24 workers and left three missing. The accident occurred in Ruyi Du Ab district of Samangan province, one of the safer parts of the country from the standpoint of insurgency-related violence. Aminullah, a police official who like many Afghans goes by one name, says more than 1000 area residents rushed to help, using shovels to try to rescue the workers.

Splendid isolation in the St Lawrence River

W

hat a difference a bridge makes.

This rather obvious observation hit home when driving around one Quebec island and cycling another, both close to the shore of the St Lawrence River but a world apart in their way of life.

First, Ile d’Orleans, a bridge hop from the outskirts of Quebec City. It’s a graceful haven of fine homes, fields of cultivated berries, art studios, collectibles, autumn apple pickers, cider, tourists, gourmet bakery treats, perfect lawns down to the water, maple syrup and bicyclists who look a bit nervous sharing narrow roads with cars, and for good reason.

Then there’s wind-swept, rather lonely and powerfully lovely Ile-aux-Grues, island of cranes. It’s only a few kilometres from the shore of the St. Lawrence River, but so disconnected that the island’s children are flown to school and back.

For Quebecers, Ile d’Orleans is the place everybody’s been.

Ile-aux-Grues is where everyone has been meaning to go.

So I went, on a ship with a quirky skipper, Jean-Francois Lachance.

He fancied himself a standup comedian as he kept up a stream of banter mixed with stories of the archipelago for

the scores of passengers. The Lachance family, operator of the cruise company, has been plying these waters since the early 1800s.

In settling on a plan to bike along the St. Lawrence for three days, I had loosely patterned my route on one laid out

by Lonely Planet contributor Margo Pfeiff, writing in the Los Angeles Times.

When I followed up with her, she offered one piece of advice in particular: “Be sure to have a day to spend on the island.”

Ile-aux-Grues can be reached by a free, 25-minute car ferry until late in the year when the ice comes and the only access is by small planes. But the ferry runs on an erratic schedule, dependent on the tides, making it an iffy proposition for day-trippers. I took the $38 Lachance Cruises round-trip — more than two hours on the boat each way, and close to three hours to explore the island. I brought my bike along.

The 170-passenger vessel first dropped off a large contingent on Grosse Ile, a national historical site that served as a gateway for Irish immigrants in the 1800s and a quarantine camp where typhus sufferers died in horrid conditions.

in whole by the rich, but only Orleans and Grues inhabited year-round.

On Ile-aux-Grues, most passengers climbed into a trolley for a motorised tour that includes a stop at the pride of the island, Fromagerie Ile-auxGrues, producer of coveted artisanal cheeses and winner of the 2009 Canadian grand prize for medium cheddar.

Others wheeled their bicycles off the boat or used free ones from Lachance and ventured out on about 20 kilometres of empty roads through meadows, marshes and farmlands,

never losing sight of the river panorama.

The island, mostly under a kilometre wide, claims to offer the largest unspoiled wetland in northeastern North America, with mudflats linking Ile-auxGrues to even less accessible Ile-aux-Oies, island of geese.

At summer’s end, the island delivered almost complete silence, except for the wind.

About 150 people live here year-round, twice that in summer.

Homes are pint-sized compared with many on Orleans, but never ordinary, dressed up

in bright colours — which is typical in Quebec — and garden rows.

The island’s most curious landmark: a beached 1940s tugboat from New York, now a restaurant offering regional cuisine and a venue for gettogethers.

It’s named Le Bateau Ivre, or the Drunken Boat, after the 19th century French poem. Arthur Rimbaud’s classic verses, though, speak of a churning watery violence at odds with the tranquil setting of this old red tugboat and the island it now calls home.

Cashmere makes history Cashmere Technical became the first team from Canterbury to win the Chatham Cup in over 20 years, after beating Waitakere City 3-1 in the final at ASB Football Park in Christchurch yesterday. Not since Christchurch United lifted the cup in 1991 has a side from the province tasted cup glory and a capacity crowd of over 2600 turned up in full voice to cheer the home side to victory. Canterbury veteran Andy Pitman, who ends his career with a Chatham Cup winners medal around his neck and the Jack Batty trophy for his man of the match performance, was understandably emotional as the champagne flowed. “They don’t come better than this to be honest,” he said.

It all happens very, very fast.

You see it all very, very slow.

There is a moment of serenity, floating almost. Before the world seems to break and splinter around you.

That’s what Emirates Team New Zealand’s near-capsize was like for those watching yesterday.

Talk about a moment hanging in time. It was a hull hanging in time; a nation aghast, willing the laws of physics to be broken.

Surely it had to go over - and with it over $100 million and years of America’s Cup planning, designing, building, training and racing.

A small country’s David-like efforts would have been washed under the Goliath of the Golden Gate Bridge, the dream broken into bits of carbon-fibre, which is what happened to the last two AC72s to capsize in San Francisco Bay. A damaged boat could possibly have been repaired. A sunken boat equals sunken hopes.

Disaster.

Nah. Did you see how Team New

Zealand regrouped?

No postponement card, no thought of a delay, no hesitation.

“We didn’t need to go away and re-group,” said tactician Ray Davies. “We regrouped on the water.

“I think the confidence we have in our own team to rebound was shown after that race,” said skipper Dean Barker.

“We didn’t roll over and give up.

“It’s good to get back on the horse.

“We led round the bottom mark and had reasonable control of that race [Race 9].

“We know they have made changes and they look like they have improved a bit, yes, but we still feel we have an edge and we just have to make sure we use it.”

If this Emirates Team NZ do win the 34th America’s Cup, mark down this day as a key juncture.

To be so close to a disaster, a sort of America’s Cup end of days, and to bounce right back and be leading the next race is champion stuff.

No panic, no hyperbole, no messed up heads - just straight back into sailing mode, win the

start and gain a 7s lead, before the wind limits interceded and the race was called off.

Because of the near-capsize and Oracle Team USA’s improved showing yesterday, many will figure there is life in this Cup match yet.

Some will even be saying this could be a shift in momentum, that Oracle could sail back into this, even at 6-0 (they erased their two-race, two-point penalty yesterday).

Yeah, but ... nah.

Certainly yesterday showed that the America’s Cup and the AC72s are entirely capable of producing the unexpected.

Nothing can be taken for granted.

Not even finishing, let alone winning.

But the percentages are still with ETNZ. They are sure their boat is still faster and point to the fact that Oracle Team USA’s two wins have come on the back of ETNZ’s sailing mistakes.

They acknowledge Oracle sailed better and look a bit faster upwind. They respect that.

But that’s it.

“We are very fortunate to have the boat back in one piece but it won’t change the way we race,” said Barker.

“These boats make you push hard; it’s the best way.

“We have had opportunities to win both the races we have lost; it is there for us to win - we just have to make sure we put the points on the board.” - NZH

Andrew Nicholson, the world’s No1 eventing rider, spoke prophetically a year ago about mentoring the next generation of New Zealand equestrian hopefuls. He’d added a third Burghley title to clutter a mantelpiece weighed down by three Olympic team medals and an individual world championship bronze. “I feel like I get on well with the younger bunch. I like it when they ask about things. don’t want to be a coach because I still want to compete, but I’m happy to offer advice. I know how important it is to have a strong team around you. It helps individual performances, knowing others want to push you. For example Jock [Paget] has a cool head. He listens and watches everything and is not afraid to make mistakes and learn.”

Erakovic into final Kiwi tennis No 1 Marina Erakovic has won her way into the final of the WTA tournament in Quebec, Canada, after a quality win against American Christina McHale yesterday. Erakovic won her semifinal 6-4 6-3 in a match that lasted just under one and three quarter hours. Erakovic had 14 opportunities to break McHale’s serve, capitalising on six of them.

It is the second time Erakovic has made the final of the Quebec WTA event. She lost to Barbora Zahlavavo Strycova in the final in 2011. Meanwhile, New Zealand has lost the doubles match in its Davis Cup tie against the Philippines in the Asia/Oceania Group II final at Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines to have a 2-1 lead going in to the reverse singles.

Hughes in for Australia Out-of-favour opener Phil Hughes is set to get one final chance to impress as Australia attempt to end their UK cricket tour on a rare high in tonight’s one-day “grand final” against England. Opener Shaun Marsh has been ruled out of the series decider in Southampton with a hamstring injury, while captain Michael Clarke is in doubt after another flare up of his chronic back injury. Clarke is desperate to play after yesterday’s three-wicket defeat in Cardiff squared the rainaffected five-match series at 1-1, but the captain will not be risked if he’s not fully fit. “It’s a big game but if he’s not right, we won’t risk him,” Lehmann said. “We’ve got another one-day series and an Ashes series coming up.”

Ko in contention World No 1 amateur golfer Lydia Ko was only one stroke back heading into this morning’s final round of the Evian Championship in France. The 16-year-old from the Gulf Harbour Country Club carded a superb four-under par 67 in round two - including two birdies in the final two holes - to move into a share of second place with Norway’s Suzann Pettersen on a seven-under par total. The New Zealand Women’s Open champion recorded four birdies in a bogey-free round that once again outclassed the best women’s professionals in the world. - APNZ

Coach of the biggest name in golf right now, Guy Wilson spent the day teaching the trick of the trade to local juniors at the Ashburton Golf Club yesterday.

Wilson has been Lydia Ko’s coach for just over 10 years and will be glued to the TV screen this morning as his prodigy chases down another major title, with the World No 1 amateur starting one stroke back heading into the final round of the Evian Championship in France.

With Ko’s recent run of form it would be easy to think he has the easiest coaching job around.

“It does seem to be too hard right now,” Wilson said. “But when she gets back in the country we’ll still have a lot of work to do.”

Wilson is constantly communicating with Ko, using all means of communication when she is on the road, and when she is home spends three to four hours a day with him.

The biggest question, and one Ko has been asked a hundred times, is when the 16-year-old will turn pro and cash in on her ability, and it is still the one question her coach is yet to ask.

“We haven’t even talked about it yet.

“After the win in Canada she stayed on in the States before heading to France, so when she gets back we’ll have to sit down to discuss it because there is a lot of stuff to work out.”

Ko has already missed out on collecting around $1.5 million due to her amateur status.

First blood to Ferns The Silver Ferns have struck the first blow in the Constellation Cup, beating the Australian Diamonds 55-51 at the Velodrome in Invercargill last night. Laura Langman was named player of the match for her tireless efforts in the midcourt but Joline Henry’s efforts were every bit as meritorious. The experienced wing attack snaffled more than her share of intercepts and turned back the clock with some uncompromising defence. New Zealand were leading by 11 goals before Australia’s trademark fourth quarter rally pruned the deficit. The Silver Ferns were perhaps a little guilty of sitting on their lead and becoming tentative.

Knights sound warning Competition sleeper Newcastle are two games away from an NRL grand final after beating an undisciplined Canterbury 22-6 in yesterday’s elimination final at Allianz Stadium. Furyk continues hot form in Chicago

BY BEN EVERILL Veteran American Jim Furyk backed up his scintillating second round 59 with a measured two-under 69 to take a one-shot lead after the third round of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club.

Furyk moved to 13-under par in the third of four playoff tournaments, one clear of fellow veteran Steve Stricker who carded an impressive 64 to jump to 12-under and outright second.

Brandt Snedeker (71) sits third at 11 under, Zach Johnson (69) is fourth while world No.1 Tiger Woods bounced back from a controversial penalty to be fifth at nine-under.

Jason Day and Matt Jones are the best of the Australians at six-under par in a tie for 11th.

Day struggled to a one-under 70, battling a tough sinus infection while Jones put together a neat 67 to give himself every chance of the top five finish he likely needs to survive to next weeks season ending Tour Championship.

Batters up was called for the first time and the Mid Canterbury softball season got off to an unofficial start on Saturday.

The softball open day at Argyle Park was a chance for new, old and existing players to have a hit a throw and a catch in

preparation for the upcoming season.

Mid Canterbury Softball’s Rob Flanagan was impressed out the “really good turnout” with a number of new faces out on the diamond.

They had three games going tee-ball, under 11 and under 13s and then two exhibition games

against a Masters team from Rolleston, the Derby Boys.

The Mid Canterbury under 19 boys looked sharp in their first outing of the season, but went down to the experienced campaigners 13-10 before a Mid Canterbury all-comers side was well beaten 9-2.

The only disappointing fac-

tor for the day was no one was game enough to face up to the batting machine wound up to full speed.

The softball season is only a few weeks away with the open grades starting on October 12 and the juniors, including teeball, slow pitch and little league the following Saturday.

Ogier wins Rally Australia Frenchman Sebastien Ogier has won Rally Australia but fallen just short of clinching the FIA World Rally Championship driver’s title.

Volkswagen driver Ogier won 17 of the 22 stages in the event based around the Coffs Harbour area - the 10th round of the world championship - and won by 1min32s from Thierry Neuville of Belgium yesterday. Finland’s Mikko Hirvonen finished third.

Tana’s men hang on to Injury ends Carter’s Rugby Championship the Shield

Counties Manuka broke the trend and successfully defended the Ranfurly Shield with a 44-7 win over Taranaki yesterday.

Counties had one hand back on the shield by halftime racing out to a 25-0 win and in the end outscored Taranaki six tries to one in Pukekohe.

The three-week jinx where the Shield needed a Koru lounge pass to get from Waikato to Otago to Hawke’s Bay to Counties-Manukau is over - at least until next Saturday when Waikato get a chance to complete the loop.

The second game yesterday saw a Hawke-s Bay fightback from 17 points down at halftime to run down Northland 31-26 as they booked their third win in Napier.

Northland had led 23-6 at halftime before the fast-finishing Magpies were helped along by a controversial TMO call that awarded Zac Guildford a try in the 54th minute despite a lack of evidence that Guildford grounded the ball.

The try sparked the home side’s rescue mission.

Hawkes Bay had opened the fifth round with a 23-10 loss to Taranaki in New Plymouth on Wednesday while Wellington then notched up another win beating Bay of Plenty on Thursday to sit top of the table.

Manawatu handed Southland a 27-17 defeat in Palmerston North in the first game of the Friday night double header before North Harbour upset Tasman 23-12 in North Harbour.

On Saturday Waikato got their season back on track ahead of a shield challenge by beating Auckland 42-24 in Hamilton, ending their northern rivals unbeaten run.

Canterbury then survived a scare to triumph 32-22 over Otago to move above Auckland in second spot, setting up a topof-the-table clash in Wellington next weekend.

Canterbury only led 15-13 a try halftime and need a late try from substitute Paea Fa’anunu to seal the win, and claim a bonus point.

Dan Carter’s Rugby Championship is over, his shoulder joint injury ruling him out for six weeks which means his next All Blacks test is likely to come against France in Paris in November.

That will be the 31-year-old’s 98th test, the big 100 milestone likely to happen against Ireland in Dublin on the end of year tour if the veteran first-five’s body survives the French test and the one a week later against England at Twickenham.

Carter tweeted yesterday of his injury which occurred in the first half of the All Blacks’ 2915 victory over South Africa at Eden Park when he was tackled heavily by Bismarck du Plessis, for which the hooker was sinbinned: “Nothing wrong with the tackle. Fell awkwardly and popped my AC joint.”

sides - with an elbow to the throat of Liam Messam when he carried the ball in the second half, an act for which he was shown another yellow and, consequently, a red.

Canterbury’s Tom Taylor, who has recovered from his rib injury and played for his province in their victory over Otago on Saturday will now be brought into the squad, replacing Colin Slade, who will return to the red and blacks.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said Aaron Cruden was recovering well from his knee problem and would likely be available to start against Argentina at La Plata in a fortnight.

Hansen will have a selection conundrum for the No10 jersey following Beauden Barrett’s excellent performance against the Springboks which catapulted the All Blacks into the Rugby Championship lead.

Flanker Sam Cane and hooker Dane Coles were solid despite the pressure of the build-up and the South Africans’ willingness to mix it physically, but perhaps the biggest surprise was how well Beauden Barrett directed operations once he replaced Dan Carter after only 17 minutes.

Charles Piutau was also extremely prominent after he came on at fullback for Israel Dagg, who was struggling with a leg haematoma.

All four showed composure and courage, with big performances coming also from lock Brodie Retallick and the returning prop Owen Franks, both of whom proved their worth in the set pieces and trench warfare at the breakdown.

Barrett took the line on time and again - something which veteran Conrad Smith admitted surprised him - and took a similarly direct approach with his defence - something which surprised and delighted backs coach Ian Foster.

Development squad wins The Mid Canterbury Development Squad had a strong 26-7 win over North Otago A in the curtain raiser to the Heartland Rugby Championship match in Oamaru.

Mid Canterbury ran out to a comfortable 26-0 lead before the hosts came up with a late try. In Hinds the Mid Canterbury under 16s lost to South Canterbury 16-8 before the under 18s beat South Canterbury 25-18. The Mid Canterbury under 65s edged out Canterbury Country 22-18 in Rakaia where the under 45s had a double header going down 12-20 to Canterbury Country and then 7-36 to Christchurch Metro.

A misfiring Mid Canterbury went down to North Otago 18-19 in their first loss of the Heartland Rugby Championship in Oamaru on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury only really found their stride in the final five minutes of each half, and although they scored the goahead try in the first half they couldn’t conjure up the matchwinner at the death.

North Otago’s Edward Keohane’s 14 points with the boot had the Old Golds scrape home and the messy performance from Mid Canterbury was highlighted in North Otago’s lone try.

Mid Canterbury were hot on attack, but a dropped ball was scooped up by Uilisoni Tahitua and the loose forward ran 80m to score under the posts, with Keohane’s conversion taking

the hosts out to 10-0.

Two penalties from fullback Josh Nonu got Mid Canterbury back in the game before they finally fired a shot in the closing stages and captain Jon Dampney barged over for the try to put the visitors up by one point at halftime.

Keohane slotted two penalties to start the second half and have North Otago go out to a 16-11 lead.

Mid Canterbury hit back with a try to replacement wing Johannes Lambrechts and the Nonu conversion put them in front by two.

A scrum penalty then allowed Keohane to land the go-ahead penalty and from the kick-off Mid Canterbury earned a return shot, but Nonu’s nudge fell short.

The fact that Mid Canterbury got so close with such a bumbling performance speaks volumes for their ability, but only serves to highlight how badly they let a win slip from their grasp.

The consolation point for the one point loss was no consolation to a bemused Moore, who would have much preferred a fourth straight win and one against the side he used to coach.

However, the loss may serve as a timely wake-up call ahead of the crunch clash with South Canterbury with the Hanan Shield at stake this Saturday.

There’s nothing like a good piece of irony. For all the talk of playing pretty, it was the Wallabies’ ability to win ugly against Argentina on Saturday night that could end up being the making of the side. In driving rain and a flukey breeze, Australia hung on grimly in the second half to notch a desperately-needed 14-13 win in the Rugby Championship before 18,214 sodden fans in Perth. The result snapped a four-match losing run and gave Ewen McKenzie his first win as national coach. But more importantly, the victory gave the Wallabies a much-needed confidence boost heading into their September 28 showdown with the Springboks in South Africa and a re-match with Argentina in Rosario.

All Blacks go Stateside It is now more probable than possible that the All Blacks will play in the United States late next year as part of their World Cup preparations. A game in the US has been a long-time coming - on the to-do list for several years and pretty much top of the agenda since AIG came on board as a major sponsor this time last year.

The only issue that needs to be sorted now is who the All Blacks will play in early November next year. The plan is to replicate this year’s end of season tour, which will see the All Blacks take a younger, development-style squad to Japan for one test on their way to three clashes in Europe where the senior players will be waiting.

The West Coast is viewed as US rugby’s stronghold, although there has long been a belief that a game in Boston, or New York, against Ireland would hold huge appeal.

Big sprint gets Lauren home

Hinds cyclist Lauren Ellis held off Invercargill’s Laura Fairweather in a sprint finish to win the fifth race in the Benchmark Elite Cycling Series in Queenstown on Saturday.

Ellis entered the race as the series leader and produced the stronger surge at the finish of the women’s 103 kilometre race to win by two seconds from Fairweather in 3 hours and 16 minutes.

Three minutes later team-mate Sharlotte Lucas won the bunch sprint from Cycling Otago’s Elyse Fraser, Sophie Williamson and Haley Mercer to claim third, cementing her second place on the individual points standings, seven points behind Ellis.

Calder Stewart Road notched up their first stage victory as Timaru’s Reon Park had an impressive solo win in the 103 kilometre masters race.

Park, A World Masters record holder on the track for the individual pursuit, was only making his second appearance in the series after a puncture had foiled a potential win in the closing stages of the third round of the series from Hanmer Spring to Kaikoura in May. Christchurch’s Hamish Schreurs beat his BikeNZ track endurance team-mate Dylan Kennett in a sprint finish to win the men’s event. For Team Calder Stewart Tim Rush had the best finish coming in 12th to collect some points and remain inside the top 10 in the overall standings, now led by Sam Horgan after his ninth placed finish.

Unbeaten run comes to an end

The previously unbeaten Mid Canterbury and Thames Valley both tasted defeat in the fourth round of the Heartland rugby Championship on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury’s one-point loss to North Otago in Oamaru has had them joined by Wairarapa Bush and the West Coast on 14 points.

The West Coast claimed a bonus point 30-25 win over

South Canterbury in Timaru to take top spot while Wairarapa Bush secured a 22-15 win over Horowhenua Kapiti in Masterton, with 17 points coming from the boot of first five eight Glen Walters, to move up into second.

Another win for Lauren P24

King Country bounced back from their first defeat to topple Thames Valley 27-22 in Taupo to leapfrog the Swamp Foxes into fourth.

Buller handed the defending Meads Cup champions a third

loss in Westport with a bonus point 28-12 win.

The winless Poverty Bay made Wanganui work hard for their second win, leading 14-8 at halftime before being beaten 21-25.
