Vindicated Highly regarded Mid Canterbury rugby identity Glenn Moore (pictured) has held on to his job as Black Ferns women’s national team coach. Moore, a former Mid Canterbury player and coach, will guide the team through to this year’s women’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand starting on October 8. That was a key announcement to come out of a high-performance review into the Black Ferns’ team culture and environment yesterday.

The review was instigated after the Black Ferns lost all four tests to England and France on last year’s northern hemisphere tour. It also came about after hooker Te Kura Ngata-Aerengamate then claimed on social media that she had suffered a mental breakdown after alleged critical comments from Moore. In a statement, Moore said he was “honoured” to be taking the Ferns to the World Cup.

School sugary drinks on notice Daniel Alvey

An Ashburton primary school principal is right behind a planned nationwide sugary drinks ban. Tinwald School principal, Peter Livingstone, said his school had been water-only for 15 years, so supporting the Government proposal to ban sugary drinks was a no-brainer. “The proposal does not change anything for us,” he said. The Ministry of Education’s proposal would see all sugary drinks banned from primary schools, leaving only water and milk allowed.

that’s “ If(Government

directive) what’s needed to give any remaining schools the final push, it’s not a bad thing.

The proposal, which was now open for public consultation until June 2, does not include secondary schools at the moment. “If that’s (Government directive) what’s needed to give any remaining schools the final push, it’s not a bad thing,” Livingstone said. Livingstone said that he could not remember any parents against his school’s water-only drink stance, which was all about education rather than enforcement. Ashburton College principal Ross Preece had not had time to consider the proposal should it extend to secondary schools.

Drink up: Tinwald School pupils love drinking water, and the principal is right behind them. “It’s not on our radar at the moment.” But the college does offer a range of healthy alternatives and water was being encouraged,

he said. “We have two new water fountains going in. Water is where it’s at. “Kids are becoming more aware of drinking water at school.”

No pews, no readings, instead the re-enacted Easter Malcolm Hopwood For the past week the Baptist Church in Ashburton has been transformed into the Easter story. The interior of the church has been turned into a maze of 10 Biblical scenes and stations. Gone are church pews and readings from the lectern. Instead Children and Families Ministry Leader, Delia Fox, has recreated a “tangible walk through experience of the Bible story, starting with Palm Sunday and ending with Pentecost.” “I wanted to do it for the community. It is giving people a chance to experience the real Easter story in a tangible and meaningful way,” she said. “Everybody needs a story of hope. This is a story that’s been told for 2000 years and must be worth telling.” Each interactive station depicts a different aspect of the Easter story. People are challenged to be engaged at every step of the journey. Station four is acted out by the audience who become the characters in the scene where Peter denies Jesus. In station five, an actor portrays Pontius Pilot who sits in judgement. Station six is the crucifixion and, in station 10, Jesus sends his Holy Spirit back to earth in wind and fire. Palm Sunday is commemorated by the audience writing on a paper frond, waving it and attaching it to a screen. To achieve the Easter Trail, Fox has engaged a team of 40 plus people to design and build the set, furnish it, stage the performance, install lighting and sound and cos-

tume the characters. “We wanted to make the experience as authentic as possible with the set symbolising what the Holy Land might have looked like,” she said. “We started last week and had three days to totally transform the building, ready for the first performance,” Fox said. Schools and churches have been invited and, for nearly a week, groups of 15 people at a time, together with a guide, interact and walk through the Biblical maze. The performances end tomorrow.

to do it “ Iforwanted the community. It is giving people a chance to experience the real Easter story in a tangible and meaningful way.

Fox is the inspiration for the Easter Trail. She arrived with her family to Ashburton from Zimbabwe eight years ago. Her background is interior decoration and teaching, but three years ago she was appointed to the church fulltime. Her husband, Rich Fox, a dairy farmer, became the church’s fulltime pastor earlier this year. The Easter story was recreated on a smaller scale last year but, as a result of its impact, the church expanded it for community involvement in 2022. “I’m hoping it brings relevance to the story and the audience finds something meaningful along the journey,” she said.

Two New Zealand Blood Service donors roll up their sleeves and give a unit of blood. Nationally the blood service needs 30,000 new donors annually.

Don’t be a clot, give blood Malcolm Hopwood The New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) wants Mid Canterbury people to roll up their sleeves next week. The service will be at the Sinclair Centre, Ashburton, April 19-20 and needs 60 donations from local people while it’s here. National manager, marketing and communications, Asuka Burge, says the challenge for the blood service is to attract more than 8000 new donors from the Canterbury region alone. Nationally the NZBS needs over 30,000 new donors to meet current demand. “We’re hoping our visit encourages not just our regular Ashburton donors to attend, but also those who’ve never donated before to start doing so,” she said. “We’d also like those who haven’t donated in the last two years to resume giving blood.” O+ and A+ are the two most common

blood types in New Zealand so there’s always more demand for those types, Burge said. “O- is pretty important also, given it’s the universal blood type and can be given to anyone in an emergency.” She points out that every day 83 Kiwis need lifesaving blood or plasma, that’s one person every 18 minutes. “Voluntary donations from committed and unremunerated donors across New Zealand ensure we have a constant supply of blood and blood products that can be used to help many people facing life-threatening illnesses, injuries or unseen emergencies,” Burge said. Once blood is collected, it’s tested for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C. After testing, the components are separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets and turned into various lifesaving blood products used to help accident victims, cancer patients, pregnant women, children and babies, among others. “The processing of blood means several people can benefit from just one donation,” she said. “The support we receive from Ashburton district is amazing and we hope they’ll respond again this month.”

Keeping the wheels in motion at the Plains Malcolm Hopwood The government’s traffic light might be red but it’s green for go at the Plains Museum this week. The Plains has been closed since the traffic light system was introduced three months ago but, with the removal of vaccine passes, it’s opening again on Saturday and Sunday. It’s seen the closure of four open days and lost revenue when its function rooms weren’t available for events. Plains Railway chairperson, Lorayne Oakley, estimates a loss of $10,000 during the closure. “It’s been extremely frustrating for us and definitely hard for our members. It’s affected us badly,” she said. “We’re absolutely stoked to open the gates this weekend.” Oakley explained the vaccine passes

made it too difficult to enforce and the Plains remained closed. “With the removal of the passes we can function again. Wearing of masks is optional around the village, but they’ll have to be worn at the station and on the train,” she said. A feature of this weekend’s open days is the JA black steam locomotive which will give rides on both days. All the attractions will be open and members of the airforce museum are bringing an operational cockpit for people to sit in and work the controls. Oakley said the Plains is making a special feature of Easter with the carriages being decorated and a bunny egg hunt around the village. “Children will enjoy an Easter colouring competition and our pop-up playground,” Oakley said. “Hot food and coffee is available.” The Plains Museum on Maronan Road is open from 11am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday. “I’m excited to reopen. All the revenue we make will keep the wheels in motion,” Oakley said.

Something to get egg-cited about Easter focus part of Taylor’s long road to recovery Lili Haydon Brave Taylor Doyle, pleased to be home in Ashburton after a life-changing operation, has eggs on her mind. Easter eggs, that is, and hunting for them, too. Because this weekend her dad Karl Doyle will again be running his Easter egg hunt, which goes between their house and the neighbours. Taylor, like most chocolate-devouring teenagers, loves Easter. “Easter is the best holiday. “Even If I can’t eat (all the Easter chocolate),’’ said Taylor, who was also enjoying just being home with younger siblings, Milla and Alex, and much-loved cat Kitty. Taylor, 14, had been in Sydney, and mostly in hospital, for four weeks. She was still tired and could eat in moderation, though it still caused pain. That’s no surprise. Pain caused by eating was an expected post-surgery reaction and part of what will be a long recovery from her operation for her debilitating vascular condition, median acute ligament syndrome (MALS). The rare condition, which Taylor had since last May, is when tissue in the chest area compresses the artery that supplies blood to the organs in the upper abdomen. It made eating, drinking, and sometimes breathing, painfully difficult and almost unbearable. It made Taylor’s life miserable, saw her hospitalised for 100 days. She had to have a feeding tube installed for six months because the pain was so debilitating, and she had lost too much weight too quickly. The operation in Sydney, unable to be performed in New Zealand, was a success as much as a relief because a diagnosis of MALS could only be confirmed by surgery. But now the focus was on her recovery, which would be a marathon and not a sprint. Touching down on New Zealand soil nearly two weeks ago

Pleased to be home: Ashburton’s Taylor Doyle, back from an operation in Sydney for her rare and debilitating vascular condition, loves being back after four weeks away and being able to cuddle her favourite member of the family, Kitty. PHOTO LILI HAYDON

with her mother Zalie Doyle was the start of that recovery. But just getting back was another challenge after a few hiccups from Sydney to Auckland. Taylor fainted once in duty free and then twice in the airplane because she also suffers from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which is one of the symptoms of MALS. POTS causes fainting and dizziness from an increased heart rate and reduced blood volume when standing up. “At first I wasn’t worried because with POTS, this can happen,’’ Zalie said. “But after the third time, we got medical attention.’’ After being put up in a hotel for the night by Air New Zealand, and then getting the medical all clear, the pair finally made

it home to Ashburton. They had been away from home much longer than expected because they had to depart for Sydney much earlier than planned after Karl contracted Covid-19 in Ashburton. Staying in Ashburton, with Karl having

Covid, was not a risk they were prepared to take. Taylor and Zalie wisely headed to Sydney well ahead of schedule, leaving Karl at home battling the virus. “If there was no Covid, it would

The procedure, where an injection of medication in the centre of the abdomen stops nerves from feeling pain, was carried out to see if Taylor could eat without pain before the operation could

be given the green light. So, for 13 hours, Taylor got to eat anything she wanted. That was a major thing for someone, who had been unable to eat without discomfort for nearly a year. They even tried the Uber Eats online food to your door delivery service, which was a luxury experience because it was not available in Ashburton. Their dumplings order duly arrived at their hotel room. Unfortunately, they were cold. “Never eat Uber Eats if it’s (delivered) from on a bicycle,” Zalie said. That was part of their journey, an experience like no other for the mother and daughter, who have spent four of the past 12 months in hospital or away from their family because of Taylor’s health issues. Taylor also suffers from acid reflux and gastroparesis, a rare condition where the stomach is unable to empty itself of food properly. Again, that was all part of MALS. “Anyone that has a chronic illness knows it impacts the whole family,” Zalie said. Fortunately, they have coped, with Karl saying Alex and Milla had been amazing while they were holding down the fort back home. Also amazing had been the Mid Canterbury community, whose help made it possible after the Doyle family set up a fundraising page, Help Taylor Eat Again, which raised over $35,000. “I had to stop checking the site because I would start crying each time,” Zalie said, still overcome by the generosity of so many. Zalie hadn’t received the final medical bill from Sydney but believed it would be around $40,000. The Doyle family planned to give back any money left over to other people in need in the community by doing random doing acts of kindness. Zalie knows all about that and how uplifting it can be. “One day at work, a woman came in and asked if I was Taylor’s mother and handed me $200 in cash and said, ‘go get yourself a coffee’, and walked out,” Zalie said “The support we have received has been overwhelming.”

Fire investigators were on scene yesterday determining the cause of the fire.

The campaign, with the portaloo and Rolly in attendance, will be at Pacific Radiology in Ashburton tomorrow from 9am. The campaign hopes to highlight New Zealand’s high rates of bowel cancer. About 70,000 Kiwis are living with inflammatory bowel disease and about one in every 100 New Zealanders are affected by coeliac disease.

Two new Covid deaths have been reported in Canterbury, as cases remain high, with 1439 new cases reported across the region on Monday. Across Canterbury DHBs 52 people are in hospital. Canterbury had the second highest number of cases in the country on Monday trailing Auckland by eight cases. Ashburton has a Covid testing centre on South Street (entrance off Cass Street).

Don’t worry, just disc it

I

’m seeing more and more local people stressed out these days. A lot of people are not only worried about catching Covid, they are actually living in fear. And I don’t think the Government and health authorities have helped that situation. I think we could be announcing the number of people in hospital and deaths in a better way. I’m not sure if someone with Covid gets mowed down by a bus, they should be included in the Covid death tally. Add to Covid stress pressure around the cost of living going forward, I thought I should pose this question to my Facebook faithful and see if I couldn’t help some stay grounded and chillaxed. What UNUSUAL thing have you found that REDUCES stress and anxiety in your life? And they didn’t disappoint with their responses, here’s a few highlights. Elen: Fishkeeping and aqua scaping aquariums. Look out for Valetta’s new signage Lili Haydon Slow down you might miss it . . . Valetta has new signage. Thanks to Jayne Clark and Brent Gregan, Valetta has a brand spanking new sign. The sign is located on Valetta Mayfield/Anama Road by the war memorial. The community decided to have a celebration on Sunday for it. Clark wanted to make sure there was a landmark to commemorate one of the original runs in Canterbury and the railway station which no longer exists.

There was a speech by Alan Sim, a local historian about the area and over 40 ‘Valettians’ brought along a rock each to place in the gabion baskets at the bottom of the sign made by Gregan, who did it for free. “It went exceedingly well. I was amazed at the turnout,” Sim said. Clark decided Valetta deserved a sign like Hatfield’s, so she contacted Gregan, who had built the Hatfield sign. Gregan said he was inspired to make the signs to highlight the history of small towns. “The railway used to go from Rakaia to Methven and there were little signs along the way so farmers knew where they could take their

products to and Hatfield was one, along with Valetta on the Ashburton to Mt Somers rail line,” Gregan said. Gregan used pinewood from trees in Rakaia and sandwiched them together over two nights after work. After the erection of the sign was celebrated, the group’s attention shifted to the memorial of John Turton Riley from Valetta, who died at sea in World War Two, with his niece Angela Rushton planting a tree next to his memorial plaque. After that the community was treated to afternoon tea down the road by the Walls family on their verandah. The next step for Valettians is to find out the mystery behind the rural area’s name.

The community gathers for the unveiling of the new Valetta sign.

Is a degree a must-have for the modern-day farmer? OPINION

By Pat Deavoll

A

few years ago, on the NZ Farming Facebook page a 17-year-old posted a query on whether he should go straight into farming or spend a few years getting an academic qualification first. The replies were split about down the middle. Some thought he should go straight into dairying, some thought he should spend some time at Lincoln University. But is education necessary to become a 21st-century farmer? Farmers today not only have to be experts on plants and animals, but they must also be computer literate, mechanically inclined, savvy in business, legal-minded, and knowledgeable

With so much to learn, getting a bachelor’s degree is often recommended for wannabe farmers. PHOTO SUPPLIED about world events. The 21st-century farmer must also stay informed about technological developments to remain competitive both locally and globally.

And they must also be politically astute because much of their farm income and operations are tied to government and local body policies and regulations.

With so much to learn, getting a bachelor’s degree is often recommended for wannabe farmers. A farmer from Methven who doesn’t want to be named (let’s call him Mark) studied middle eastern history at a university that didn’t provide any direct value to his operation. But the indirect value was irreplaceable, he said. Learning how to do research, write a paper, give a presentation and think critically has provided him with a lot of value when it comes to the farm. Mark says the university also taught him about hard work, follow through and how to earn a grade. Whether it’s a bachelor’s degree in history, accounting, or certification in a trade, the direct application of skills learned to the farmer’s operation is as

important as the effort given to achieve the end result. And education is an essential path to off-farm income which is becoming more and more critical in family farm economics. In ag areas, a degree can provide crucial skills needed to provide financial support to farms. University is expensive, and the direct applicability of skills to the farm may be low. But when you consider the broader lessons learned at university, most importantly learning how to learn, the costs seem minimal to the enormity of the knowledge and skills gained. Human beings are great at learning, the amount of information that can be jammed into our brains is incredible. Demonstrating a willingness to continuously use this natural learning ability to improve ourselves is entirely worthwhile.

Jaspal Singh and his son Ryan and his wife Ruby – dedicated to the dairy industry.

PHOTO SUPPLIED

From IT to a dairying career Pat Deavoll

Indians are renowned for being hard workers and Jaspal Singh is no exception. In six years, he has worked his way up from being a dairy assistant to being a dairy manager. The Canterbury/North Otago Dairy Manager of the Year award winner came to New Zealand in

2016 after doing a degree in Information Technology in his hometown in India. His aim was to do a post-graduate diploma in Auckland and then find a job in the industry, but this wasn’t to be. “I completed my study and wanted to get a job in IT. I looked for months but couldn’t get a job,” he says. “Then one of my friends suggested I look at going down to Mossburn (Southland) to work on a dairy farm. “My family has a little farm in India with a few animals – buffalos and cows which we hand-milked,

and I helped my grandparents whenever I came home from college. So, I was used to cows. After a couple of years in Mossburn Jaspal moved to Waimate to work for a sharemilker as a herd manager. The next season the same farmer gave him a position as 2IC on his farm at Maheno. Jaspal was there for another couple of years as 2IC then started looking around for a manager’s position. He ended up back at Waimate as manager for 800 cow Waterstone Farm. Plans are for me and my wife

Ruby and son Ryan to own our own farm, he says. “For the coming season, I will be in the position of farm manager, and in the following season there is a position of sharemilking on the same farm which I am hoping for,” he said. “Ruby was my girlfriend in India, and I went back in 2016 and we got married. At the end of 2016, she came to New Zealand and since then she is with me in the dairy industry. “The differences between India and New Zealand? Because we don’t have huge dairy farms in

India, every second home where I lived had a couple of cows or buffalos and these were hand milked. We’d cut the feed for the cows with a big knife and fed them on a feed pad and gave them water from a bucket. “For those two cows or two buffalos, it was a whole day’s work. “Do I miss India? I want to see my friends and family. It has been six years since I went back.” But there are opportunities in the dairy industry for us here that there wouldn’t be in India, Jaspal says. “So, I am dedicated to the industry.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Being appreciated for your image and not your essence is still being appreciated. It’s not ideal, but this is power nonetheless, and you can use it to get closer to what you really want. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You can make things happen with your mind, but do it with your whole self instead or you’ll miss out on the best parts. Without a physical component, experience is like a dream, easily forgotten by first light. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): What’s less relaxing than someone telling you to relax? Sometimes, life warrants a reaction! You’ll relax when you’re good and ready, after the situation is handled. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Be careful what you attach your emotions to now because the information will be neutral until someone starts taking things a certain way. When your identity isn’t wrapped up in the situation, it’s easy to perform well. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): This isn’t a rut. This is dormancy. Just because the action isn’t showy like a flower or juicy like fruit doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Like a seed, you’ll conserve energy until better cultural conditions come around. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Let the others pontificate and wax philosophical. You get the gist of what’s going on and that’s all you need to know to act. The winning move is practical and complete. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): The world is complex, and nothing is effectively assessed by itself. The larger context not only matters, sometimes it’s everything. Your sophisticated mind can make room for several conflicting ideas at once. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Others will be inspired by the way you execute your plans. They will be motivated to apply your example in their own lives. Does it fortify you to know that you elevate the group by being your best self? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Here’s a rule of adulthood you have to remind yourself of from time to time (as it goes against what you once believed) and that’s the liberating truth that life doesn’t have to be fair to be good. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Everything good will be accomplished by simply knowing the next right thing to do and then doing it. Distractions will abound. Don’t let them get in the way. Turn off notifications. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): When stressors have your mind racing forward and backward, the present moment, though ever-present, can seem somehow distant. Focus on the sight, sound and feeling of right now. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There are those who would indulge you. You’d rather be challenged and sharpened by the people around you. You’re sceptical of flattery and prefer the company of those whose attention you must earn.

Attitude is everything, aye Taylor Daryl Holden

T

here’s something about spirited Ashburton teenager Taylor Doyle that suggests she’ll succeed in life no matter what. I’m not sure what it is. Perhaps it’s the determination you can see in her eyes and hear in her voice. Perhaps it’s her obvious ability to stay positive, to smile through the pain and medical frustration she’s endured through some very dark times in the past year. Because Taylor has suffered more health adversity than most of us face in a lifetime – and she’s only 14.

She knows what pain is. She knows you should never take your health for granted. That’s why she shed tears of joy at being able to breathe without discomfort after successful surgery in Sydney for her debilitating vascular condition, median acute ligament syndrome (MALS). “I can breathe,’’ a sobbing and almost disbelieving Taylor said to her mother, the enormity of being able to comfortably perform such a simple task sinking in. Breathing challenges is part of having MALS, a rare condition which results in tissue in the chest area compressing the artery that supplies blood to the organs in the upper abdomen. It made eating, drinking, and sometimes breathing, painfully difficult. It made life a misery for the Year 9 high school student,

who has spent more than 100 nights in hospital, undergone a battery of tests and who suffered worrying weight loss because the pain and nausea symptoms worsened when she ate and drank. She was often left malnour-

it’’. Of that we have no doubt. But now, as you can read on page 5, there’s hope. There’s hope that the surgery, which was needed just to confirm the MALS diagnosis, has been a success. But that won’t be known for some time yet. Think

knows what pain is. She knows you “ She should never take your health for granted

ished and dehydrated and had to be fed with a tube for six months. It was part of a never-ending nightmare for Taylor who, as part of her journey, revealed her good nature and sense of humour by writing and performing a song appropriately called: “I’m sick of

months not weeks. Understanding, too, that this is a girl, who still has other challenges to overcome. That was highlighted in a terrible way when she fainted not once, but three times on the first leg of her trip home from Sydney to

Auckland. She fainted because Taylor also suffers from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which is one of the symptoms of MALS. It causes fainting and dizziness from an increased heart rate and reduced blood volume when standing up. But Taylor, as she has done so many times, got back up and got back on that flight after a night of rest and more medical checks. She’s a fighter is our Taylor. And like all youngsters who have overcome serious health adversity, it will shape her in a good way for the rest of her life. Many of us experience hardships and setbacks but not everyone has enough courage to overcome them. Taylor Doyle does. Of that we have no doubt.

Home track advantage goes a long way for Burton Matt Markham When Neil Burton says he knows every blade of grass on the Methven racecourse, he isn’t kidding. It’s his job to know as much. The Methven Trotting Club’s caretaker and track man, Burton spends hours each week ensuring the venue is in tip-top order, and on Sunday he had everything right, not only for the harness racing industry, but also himself. And that knowledge of the Methven track went a long way to helping him train, drive and part-own eight-year-old gelding, President Pat, to victory in the opening race on the programme. The win was a turn-up for the books. In 20 starts as a trotter, Presi-

dent Pat didn’t have a placing next to his name, but a solid workout last weekend at the venue suggested he wasn’t far off finding some worthwhile form. And that he did on Sunday, coming from a mile back at the top of the straight to win by a narrow margin – much to the delight of Burton, who was treated to warm applause upon his return to the stables. “You won’t be able to wipe the smile off my face for a while,” he said. President Pat now holds the uncommon record of having won on the track as both a trotter and a pacer, after beginning his career as a trotter, then turning to pacing before coming back to the trotting caper. “We gave him four or five starts as a trotter, but he was just too nervous, so we switched him to pacing. “But after he won his race pac-

ing, we went back to trotting with him and he seems a lot happier with it now, his biggest problem is he’s just so nervy.” Those nerves don’t help the cause as Burton has to handle his charge with kid gloves early to keep in the correct gait, but when trotting, as he showed on Sunday, he’s got a motor. “I think he’ll keep improving, he’s come a long way in this campaign alone.”

For Burton, and his wife Michelle who shares in the ownership of the horse, racing isn’t just about winning, it’s about the horse, and their patience and faith in President Pat was just reward for the hours of work they put into the game. “I just love the horse,” Neil said. “I’ve got so much time for him. “We knew he was pretty close after his workout last weekend and it’s just a big thrill to get the

win on the home track.” Burton wasn’t the only local horseman smiling on Sunday, with Rakaia’s Leo O’Reilly producing impressive debut winner Chance On Me. The three-year-old filly found the front and never looked back, winning comfortably to justify her favourite tag in the race. O’Reilly races the daughter of Sportswriter with his wife, Angela.

McLachlan’s last-minute winner gets Mid Canterbury home Matt Markham A 90th minute winner from Millar McLachlan kickstarted Mid Canterbury United’s season in the New World Premiership on Saturday afternoon. Playing in gorgeous conditions on the spectacular looking field at the Ashburton Domain, the Mid Canterbury seniors set about to bury the demons of a first-round defeat with a victory, and in a high-scoring affair against Parklands, that’s exactly what they delivered. But the match wasn’t without its drama. Mid Canterbury trailed early after Parklands found the back of the net inside the 20-minute mark, but a double to the competition’s leading goal scorer last season, Luke Martin, within four minutes of each other saw them wrestle the lead back and take a 2-1 lead into the break. With 10 minutes played in the sec-

ond half, Joel Chand extended the lead to two goals for the home side, and it looked a simple case of just closing out the match to get the win. But two goals within five minutes from Parklands changed the entire course. At 3-all, the Mid Canterbury push went on. They scored through Nicholas Eden to grab the lead back, but then dropped another goal in the 74th minute to see the scores level again. But a last-gasp effort from McLachlan in the final stages of the match was enough to put Mid Canterbury in front, and they rounded it out from there to grab vital early competition points. With one less game played than most of their rivals, Mid Canterbury sit middle of the pack and get a chance to extend that this week when they take on Universities on Good Friday at Ilam. While it was good news in Ashburton, Methven’s defence of their Division One title hit a snag in the opening round, as they lost 2-3 to Waimak United on the Methven Domain.

Methven start with real intent Matt Markham

There’s been a changing of the guard at Methven, and with that comes a new focus for this season. Shane Enright has joined the club as head coach, and has been joined by Jason Kjestrup and Alby Harkness, and the trio have charged themselves with getting the black and white jersey back to a standing it deserves after a few frustrating seasons. “It’s not so much about starting from scratch again, but Jason has set the target of empowering the Methven jersey again. “Coming in from the outside having watched and played against Methven teams I kind of knew what to expect, but the whole club has exceeded that, it’s just a pleasure to be a part of it all.” With a base of players from previous seasons to start with, they’ve built around them – bringing new faces into the mix and allowing some of the club’s younger players to advance as well. A couple of notable off-season acquisitions will certainly help the cause. Tom Reekie, who turned out for Mid Canterbury last year as a loan player, is calling Methven his home club this season, and they’ve picked up the experienced Kris Wilder from Lincoln to bolster the mid-field stocks. Those two, coupled with the likes of Brenton Connell, Manasa

The Bruce Beckley Memorial Challenge Shield will stay with Mt Somers, after they staved off the challenge of Celtic in the opening round of the Senior B season on Saturday. In a hard-fought encounter, the Mt Somers lads overcame Celtic to win 25-22 and keep the coveted piece of silverware in their possession for another fortnight. Jack Holland-Spinks led the way for the home side with a 15-point haul through a try, two conversions and two penalties. Te Ana Proffit and Blake Tipett also scored in the season opener.

Hampstead start strong Last season they were teammates, but there was certainly no love lost when Collegiate and Hampstead went to war on Saturday afternoon. After leaving the senior competition, Hampstead fielded a strong side for their first match in Senior B and won comfortably 43-19. Six individual players scored for the blue and golds, with Junior Esae adding nine points from the boot.

Matches postponed Debutant, Charlie Brown clears from a ruck in Methven’s opening round win over Woodend on Saturday. Bari, Matt Stone, Michael Hennings and Nete Caucau offer some serious firepower across the paddock. “We’ve got a great wee squad, there’s a good mixture there of what you need. “Getting players like Brenton back into the mix and being able to bring in the new names is exciting, and it’s been great to see them come together as a side and be keen to adapt to how we want to go about the season.” On Saturday that journey began, and as far as season-openers go, the first four minutes were about as good as it gets. Methven led 14-0 against Woodend without even blinking, through tries to Brenton Connell and another new acquisition in

Manasa Vula out on the wing. They went on to win the match 45-27, with Hennings scoring three tries alongside others to Bari and also Henry Miller. “It was a solid performance; I think we showed what we are capable of. “But there’s still a lot we need to be better at. “It’s great to score tries and look good doing it, but we’ve got to tidy up our defence and our discipline, we let them back into the match too easily at times. “We were missing a lot of players on the weekend. “We had three first-five options out and a couple of our props as well, so it was a good chance to throw some of the players into the deep end.”

One of the best on the paddock was also a debutant, young Charlie Brown, who played at halfback and then switched out wide later in the match. Despite looking like he was playing in a field of giants, the nippy former Combined Schools XV player looked right at home in the senior grade, slotting five conversions and showing plenty of hunger and energy across the paddock. With five competition points safely in the bag, the side will now be looking ahead to a local derby clash against Southern on Thursday night in a sub union round of the Watters Cup, and then they’ve got the bye in the next round of the Combined competition.

The Methven and Rakaia Senior B clash set down for Saturday has been postponed due to player availability thanks to Covid. A date for the match is yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, the other match from Saturday’s round will be played tonight with defending champions Allenton heading out to Hinds to play Southern.

Tough day out The Celtic women’s side endured a tough day at the office on Saturday, as they felt the full might of the powerful Christchurch Football Club’s women’s side, losing 97-0. After showing promise in their opening match against High School Old Boys, the Celtic ladies were unable to match the skill and pace of their rivals on the weekend.

Eight-try romp sees Rakaia home three tries. Luke Nabulagi, Todd Boag and Garth Fechney also scored during the match. Rakaia were the only Mid Canterbury side to win away from home on the weekend, with both Southern and Celtic suffering defeats. Defending champions Southern were left without much response in their match at Southbrook against Saracens as their

bonus point. Logan Bonnington, Will Green and Brad Tarbotton all dotted Matt down, while Tom Middleton added two conversions on debut, but they were outMarkham classed. It was a little tighter over at Waihora as last year’s Watters Cup winners Celtic went down narrowly 17-20. Mayson claims Mid Canterbury’s Lowry Cup title Shield – again PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

Matt Markham Brent Mayson has added another Lowry Cup singles title to his list of achievements on the green. The Methven Bowling Club member overcame a red-hot field of players to claim his second Lowry Cup title, beating Allenton’s Michael Lawson in the final on Saturday afternoon at the Ashburton MSA Bowling Club. There were no easy runs through for anyone on the greens during Saturday’s play with Mayson having to fend off some strong challenges.

In the morning round, which determined who would make the last eight, Mayson fended off the challenge of Craig Fowles, while club mate Jeff Nowell got the better of Richard Kane. In the other match Mat Bassett beat Simon Fleetwood. Mayson and Nowell had a battle in the quarter-finals with Mayson emerging on top, while Michael Lawson beat John Drayton, Mat Bassett beat Linton Muir and Wayne McCarthy took down Jock O’Connor. Lawson was too good for McCarthy in one semi-final, while Mayson beat Bassett to set up the final between two players who had previously both won the title. Mayson, who played superb bowls all day, was too strong in the final.

Matt Markham Not even Covid can stop the Mid Canterbury Tennis run when it comes to the Browning Shield. The centre claimed its ninth successive victory in its ultimate representative fixture for the season on the weekend, but had to so without some of the sport’s biggest local names. As late as Friday, the club were left to scramble when they were losing players who were forced into isolation through either being positive cases, or household contacts of one. Included in that list were players such as Jack Tiller, the experienced Peter Leonard as well as Jason Feutz, Pete Kirwan and Holly-Jayne Feutz. Yet despite the interruptions, the side were still too good for their rivals in the event, bringing

home the shield they hold so much store in for the ninth year in a row. This year’s event was a little different, with Ellesmere having to pull out of the competition, meaning Mid Canterbury headed up the road on Saturday morning knowing they only had to get the job done against both Malvern and North Canterbury to secure the shield. Led by both Rhys Cromie and Jane Brosnahan, they went about their business in style. They started strong with a dominant performance against North Canterbury, and then managed to do the same against Malvern to walk off the courts winners. And now the hard work will begin, to try and make it the perfect 10 in 2023. The team – Men: Cameron McCracken, Rhys Cromie, Jake Parsons, Conner Brosnahan, Riley Breen, Josh Gilbert, Lee Gilbert, Gareth Evans. Women: Tessa McCann, Ashleigh Leonard, Jess Aldridge, Mia Liu, Isabella Van Dooren, Jade Brosnahan, Jane Brosnahan, Dianna Leonard.
