‘Huge deal’ for sports awards
We’re 50 not out – and it’s time to celebrate. That’s the feeling from Ashburton Guardian Mid Canterbury Sports Awards’ organiser Jan Cochrane (pictured). Cochrane says the May 13 function is a huge deal because it celebrates 50 years of the district’s annual sporting awards.

Homework is reading Margaret Mahy Malcolm Hopwood When you’ve helped to build school libraries in Samoa, then you must fill them with books. The Rotary Club of Ashburton has answered the challenge and sent 19 boxes, containing about 2000 books, to Christchurch to be loaded into a containers that leaves later this month. The children’s books were included in thousands on sale at Bookarama last year and, among those that weren’t sold, Rotarians chose the best to send to Samoa. There are children’s novels, learning to read books, atlases, and geography and animals books for 5 to 12 year old readers. But the donation of books is only part of a commitment Ashburton Rotary has made to schools in Samoa. Over the last decade the club has added manpower to the building of libraries. Local funds have purchased the material and then members have travelled to Samoa and helped build the interiors around the islands. But that’s only part of the job.
Once the building has been constructed, it needs to be filled with books and furniture. For the last few years the Rotary Club has selected books, mostly from Bookarama, and
sent them to Samoa to populate the shelves along with desks and chairs. “We must have sent about 5000 children’s books over the years,” President, Leicester Wilson, said.
“The feedback from Samoa has been positive so it’s encouraged us to continue the project.” With the recent tsunami and destruction to parts of Samoa, it’s become more important to
provide the assistance. The container, being organised by Riccarton Rotarians, contains computers, wheelchairs, desks, school equipment and, of course, books to read from Ashburton.
Flu shots in hot demand Daniel Alvey Ashburtonians are lining up for flu vaccinations, having taken note of warnings to do so from medical professionals.
That’s the feeling of Ashburton pharmacy owner Carolyn Cameron and local GP spokeswoman, Doctor Penny Holdaway. They believed the public had heeded advice from the Ministry of Health to get a flu jab. This year, significantly more influenza cases were expected because the country’s borders had been opened for the first time in two years since Covid 19 hit. But
with omicron still in the community, it was more important than ever to be protected against the flu. “It’s (flu jab uptake) been better than last year,” Cameron said. “For many people, this will be their fourth shot (after three Covid-19 injections) in 12 months. “I think people are used to it now.” About two million Kiwis were
eligible for a free flu vaccination this year, with the Government beefing up its roll-out. The flu shot was available for free to those over 65 and those who were pregnant or at risk of becoming seriously ill because of other underlying conditions. This year, a quarter of a million more people would be able to get it for free, including everyone over 65, Maori and Pacific Island
communities over 55, and those with compromised immune systems. Dr Holdaway said the risk of not getting a flu shot, especially for kids, could be quite damaging because schools could be high spreaders. “There is a difference between the Covid vaccine and the flu vaccine. One doesn’t substitute for the other,” she said.

Sports awards turn 50 not out The countdown’s on to a milestone Ashburton Guardian Mid Canterbury Sports Awards, which organiser Jan Cochrane hope locals get behind. The May 13 event will be the 50th celebration of the annual Guardian awards, which Cochrane said was a momentous occasion. “It’s a huge deal to reach 50 years of celebrating our sporting awards,’’ said Cochrane, the Ashburton-based Sport Canterbury regional manager, who has organised the event for close to 30 years. “I’ve had a long association with the sports awards, even prior to organising and facilitating the event. It’s been exciting to see it evolve over that time, and we’ve been lucky to have such a long and successful partnership with the Ashburton Guardian.’’ The Government’s easing of Covid-19 event restrictions meant next month’s function would not have a limit to attendee numbers at Hotel Ashburton, which was a major fillip and why it was left as late as possible to confirm the function. Though there had been a disrupted sporting landscape because of the pandemic, Cochrane was still expecting high quality entries. Importantly, she encouraged all Mid Canterbury sporting organisations to recognise that even providing a nomination was a chance to
promote their code, whether they won or not. Entries would close on April 25. “It offers the opportunity for their athletes, officials, volunteers, coaches and administrators to be recognised for the work they do within their sport,’’ she said. “In a place like Mid Canterbury, we are blessed with exceptional sporting talent. I think it is such an opportunity to recognise these people and all sporting clubs and organisations.’’ The usual categories would again feature, from the premier senior sportsperson of the year title, which equestrian Kimberley Bird won last year, to junior, masters, para-athlete, team, coach, official, administrator and volunteer divisions. The Robilliard Trophy, for outstanding services to sport, would also be a highlight in an event that Ashburton Guardian managing editor, Daryl Holden, said was one of the most important for the newspaper. “When we say we’re the only true local media organisation, this sort of sponsorship backing, stretching back half a century, confirms it,’’ Holden said. “It’s a great event and a great time to recognise and reward our sporting stars. “We’re privileged to have been able to help support it and we can’t wait to celebrate the awards being 50 not out.’’

Hinds students give back to their community Lili Haydon Hinds School students are giving back to their community through planting and developing a sense of community pride along the way. Year seven and eight children have been planting native trees at the Hinds Domain as part of their William Pike Community Service Challenge with the Kanuka Mid Canterbury Regeneration Trust. The William Pike Service Challenge enabled school students to learn outside of the classroom by getting out in the community and giving back. Trust trustee, Angela Cushnie, said it was the third time students have been working at the domain, which had allowed them to monitor progress from their previous planting efforts. “Our first planting project at the Hinds Reserve with the school was August 2020.’’ They planted 30 donated native trees recently, with some of the children even naming

their plants in a project with wide-ranging values. “One of the things we talked about was building bridges between people and nature, and what else Hinds School students can do as kaitiaki (guardians) of
their district,” Cushnie said. She said the trust was enhancing what the Hinds District Lions have been doing, with the aim to encourage the next generation to keep making positive changes happen within their own back-
yard. Cushnie, who is a former Hinds School pupil, knows firsthand what the work would mean for the children in years to come. When she was 18, Cushnie attended the Outward Bound out-
door adventure course at Anakiwa in Marlborough and helped develop the Queen Charlotte Track. “I hope the children get the same sense of pride I have when I go back to Queen Charlotte.”
Rubbish warriors on the ‘warpath’ Lili Haydon Domestic rubbish is on the rise but not for long thanks to Litter-Free Ashburton’s extra cleanup day. Litter-Free Ashburton is a group of volunteers, who meet to collect litter every second Thursday to keep our streets tidy and clean. And now they’ll add an extra day to their roster because of high demand from many schoolaged volunteers wanting to lend a hand. “Children and their parents want to help, but can’t during school time,’’ Falloon said But with the school holidays now here, those students would be used. Falloon said there was enough litter by the Ashburton
riverbed end of Melrose Road to warrant an extra clean-up day. Ashburton College students would be among those who would join the clean up along the riverbed by Melrose Road. And to encourage more people, Brad Haskett and his team at KFC Ashburton have donated vouchers to say thank you to anyone that volunteered. The volunteers were needed because Falloon said there were people “deliberately dumping household waste’’. Last month, that was the case in the North Park reserve, with 16 rubbish bags being filled with cans, bottles, and even larger items. Unfortunately, it was nothing out of the ordinary. But Falloon and her group were not just rubbish focused because they also wanted to beautify Ashburton. Earlier this month, they transformed Wills Street’s frontage with some donated garden chips from Des Kruger Tree Services.

A battler for a worthy cause Lili Haydon Ashburton’s Cilla Baker wants kids to be able to quickly access mental health services – and she’s doing her bit to make it happen. Baker is hoping to raise $30,000 for the I Am Hope Foundation, which promotes and funds mental health services so that young people can get immediate help. And Baker’s off to a good start, having raised over $13,000 from selling raffle tickets for a donated kitchen aid set worth over $1600 and from donations from trusts and businesses. She’s also selling face masks with branding, has been emailing businesses all over New Zealand and has even walked the streets for donations or sponsorship. “(It’s) one hell of a project,’’ she said. “One that got big quick.” A big project maybe, but an important one with sobering statistics from the Canterbury District Health Board highlighting the need for more funding in mental health services for all New Zealanders. CDBH information showed that nearly one third of all New Zealanders would experience mental distress, while the projected rates for young adults aged 18 to 24 was even higher. As successful as her fundraising drive has been, it hasn’t all
gone smoothly. Attempts to run a strongman and strongwoman event, with Hyundai and ANZCO sponsoring it, got scuppered by Covid after attempts to reschedule it three times fell over. “We had to just cancel the event because it’s past the warmer months to achieve what we had hoped,” she said. A setback no doubt, but Baker is resilient and continues to box on. She’s also a strong advocate for health after opening her fitness gym, E3 Training, two years ago. Unfortunately, she’s had to contend with the Covid pandemic, which has made it a tough time for all businesses, especially new start-ups. So she knows how important your mental health is when being faced with obstacles. But recent Covid crowd restriction changes, which allowed unlimited people inside an indoor venue from Thursday, has given Baker a major boost. She can now confidently look forward to hosting a quiz night at the Tinwald Memorial Hall on May 21 to raise funds for Gumboot Friday. The annual event encourages people to wear gumboots and give a gold coin donation to help fund free counselling for kids. There will also be mystery goodie bags auctioned off during the quiz, but Baker also hopes it will further raise awareness around mental health. “It needs more funding from the ground. Suicide is too high.”

Ah the wedding memories Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR
L
ast week my Facebook page popped up some wedding photos memories. It was nice to sift through them again. It got me to thinking about our big day, as well as all the great memories, I remembered a couple of hiccups on the day. Manda forgot something, just after she had pulled the door shut (and locked). Father-in-law to the rescue, slithering through the toilet window. We also had an issue with the wedding walk music, but got there in the end. I got to wondering how that compared to other wedding day ‘hiccups’. I posted this: “What went wrong on your wedding day?” and was blown away with the response. Here’s a sample of the, ummm, highlights? Lee-Anne – The guys were clay bird shooting in the morning, and the thing that throws the clays was playing up. Fast forward to one of them getting whacked in the head with it trying to fix it, he’s knocked out, ambulance arrives and he misses the whole thing Allie – We went to the Halswell quarry for photos and parked inside the gates, not realising they close. The bridal party and photographer got the bridal party vehicles and bridal party locked and stranded at the quar-
ry whilst the guests all waited for us to return woops! Brogan – One of the groomsmen hadn’t given correct measurements and his pants looked like clown pants on him. It was absolutely hilarious though. Amanda – Not on the day but day before. I fell over split my chin open badly, broke the nail on my ring finger . . . over an hour’s drive from a Dr . . . used strips of plaster to hold chin together to stop bleeding . . . didn’t get nail fixed . . . hubby never tells me to hurry up now. Memories were made that’s for sure. Helen – My sister pulled out of being a bridesmaid days before my wedding and after I spent hundreds on a dress, shoes, and jewellery, and then turned up on the day as a guest. Hannah – The helicopter company we had arranged to take us for photos in the mountains went into liquidation three weeks prior and did not bother to contact us. The groomsmen didn’t wear the pocket squares I had custom made to suit the bridesmaid’s dresses oh and I hated the way my hair was styled. Otherwise, everything was perfect! Ashley – It was a super windy day and our wooden arch blew over and knocked our celebrant out before the ceremony! Thankfully she was ok and was able to continue with the ceremony but she had a pretty bad concussion which took her a couple of months to recover from Courtz – Two weeks before the wedding I found out two bridesmaids, a groomsman and the page boy couldn’t make it
because someone spent their flight money on a car. I got another friend to step in, but had to change what they wore. The groomsmen decided I wanted a rubber band ring, (they gave me the real one after the celebrant told them off. It was too bloody hot, (42 in the shade and we didn’t have much of that). I only tried my dress on in the middle of winter so I was having to lift it up so my bridesmaids could fan me. We had beer, wine and filled an outside bath tub up with ice, but forgot to get non-alcoholic beverages. It was one of the best days of my life and I wouldn’t change it for anything Lenae – One of our groomsmen fainted . . . and one of the bridesmaids spilt a drink all down the front of her dress so someone took it to a one-hour dry cleaner and I didn’t even know it happened. Deby – On the morning of our wedding the boys realised they didn’t order shirts with their suits, we lived over an hour away from the shop (which would have been closed anyway) and managed to get three white dress shirts from people around the district. At the reception my friend accidentally spilt a glass of rum all down my dress but l didn’t mind as all the photos had been taken by then and l didn’t plan on wearing it again (all came out at the drycleaners) Aside from the formal photos l had asked the photographer to take casual photos throughout the night of our guests, when l
got them back they were mostly of her family. I wouldn’t call any of that “going wrong” though, we still had a great day, then we found out that my only first cousin on my mum’s side passed away so that sucked. Hayley – I didn’t have my wedding dress, the boys didn’t have their suits, no Portaloos and it was absolutely torrential rain lol. Was still a great day. Dress was borrowed suits came last minute with dress (from Wellington store. Sizes were hit and miss). We made a urinal in the garden for the guys. It was just after the Chch earthquake hence why we didn’t have things. But that didn’t mat-
ter it was just stuff and we were still able to get married. Hayley is absolutely right, it’s just stuff and doesn’t matter. So, if you’re planning your wedding in the near future, don’t worry about it too much, stuff will probably happen and it won’t matter, so try and relax and look forward to enjoying your big day. Don’t get caught short of feed By Pat Deavoll
With winter just around the corner, farmers are gearing up and a “really important” part of this process is doing a winter feed budget, says Federated Farmers provincial president David Clark. “By now we have done an assessment of how much feed we have on hand, what we have growing and how many animals we are carrying. Then we do a reconciliation – our feed levels must be in balance with our feed requirements. “And for us, our feed budget is not about how much feed we need to buy to support the animals that we have. Our feed budget works the opposite of that – how much feed can we grow for the winter and how many lambs can we purchase and finish for the winter. So instead of buying feed in we moderate the number of animals we buy for the winter.” In a NZ Grassland publication, the author M.A.Monteith described a feed budget as “a statement of available feed and likely stock feed requirements in an immediate shortterm future period”.
“The actual period involved will vary according to the management problem requiring a decision. The feed “income” side of the budget is comprised of current reserves plus expected growth,” Monteith said. The feed “expenditure” side is derived from the numbers and kinds of stock on hand, their feed intakes associated with the performance expected from them over the budget period (for instance, Clark wants his lambs ready for the works in September), and the pasture reserves remaining at the end of the budgeting period. In a recent Beef + Lamb New Zealand Feed Planning article, farm systems scientist Tom Fraser outlined the value of carrying out a feed budget to drive profitability and reduce farmer stress levels. He said a feed budget would identify deficits and surpluses and highlight any red flags to act early. Farmers in different parts of the country are going into winter with different challenges, he said. Many regions like Mid Canterbury had a wet summer so feed quality could be an issue; other areas such as Southland and the West Coast are very dry

Hold-up at the meatworks leaves farmers hanging Pat Deavoll
M
eatworks around the country are struggling to meet demand due to Covid absenteeism. “Yes, there is a hold up,” said Federated Farmers provincial president David Clark. “We would like to be weighing lambs (to send off to the meatworks) but have been delayed a week in doing that. Fortunately, that is not critical for us as we can hold them another week – we have enough feed. “But it is a real problem for farmers in Southland who are drought-affected and can’t get stock off the farm. “Here in Mid Canterbury, if anyone is impacted it’s the dairy farmers with culled cows going to the works. Farmers are having to hold onto cows for longer than they would otherwise have chosen to do so.” The announcement by the Government that an additional 500 meat processing workers from overseas will be allowed into New Zealand will help ease the sector’s chronic labour shortages, said the Meat Industry Association (MIA). “We are approximately 2000 people short, and this situation is being exacerbated by a number of our people isolating or having to stay at home to look after family members due to Covid,” said Sirma Karapeeva, chief executive of MIA. “Right now, there simply aren’t enough people to process every part of the carcass to maximise its value so these additional workers will certainly

soon as possible so our companies can get these migrants into New Zealand and into jobs. “Farmers are being forced to hold onto livestock longer as meatworks across the country have wait times stretching up to six weeks,” National agriculture spokesperson Barbara Kuriger said.
“This adds even more pressure to our farmers, with some having to dip into their winter baleage supply early or buy in costly feed supplement alternatives.” “We would hope that now that we have passed the peak of the Omicron outbreak, we will start to see a return to normality and

as the isolation rules change the expectation is that this will start to correct itself,” Clark said. “As a country, we have got to get back to life as normal. The rest of the world is doing so, and we need to as well. Ultimately, we need Covid to be treated as a normal cold or flu. And that can’t happen soon enough.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): While it’s possible a selfsacrificing act will help a relationship, it benefits you to consider the opposite as well. You’ll be surprised at the improvements that come from the question, “What’s in it for me?” TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The mother of frustration is desire. Team an expectation with a time frame and suddenly the climate is perfect for desire. There are two immediate solutions. Let go of the desire or lengthen the time frame. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The duality of the twins will fascinate others. You’ll be many things at once. Exhilarated yet patient; hopeful yet reasonable. You’ll have trepidation and still move forward in boldness, ready for what comes. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Thinking a thing through can happen in a flash. Carrying it out takes much longer than you anticipate, though, especially in light of the complexity of your current endeavour. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You have the grit that will propel you forward, regardless of obstacles. And while you would prefer to reach your destination as soon as possible, the important thing is not how long it takes but that you do it. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The golden rule will extend like a blanket of karma over your whole scene. Everything counts. Stay on the safe side. Spare feelings. Spare spiders! Practice the compassion of catch and release. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): The group participation route isn’t always your favourite, but your current endeavour really does require a team effort. When one person is tired and ready to give up, another will be ready to help. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You are, in fact, in the process of change. You happen to be so deep in it that it would be impossible to see what’s happening, and you don’t need to. That’s a job for future you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You are aware that everyone likes a good storyteller but bad ones are tolerated to varying degrees. You’ll make sure you’re interesting to talk to, which is partly brevity and partly reading the room. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Your heart defies logic like that’s it’s job. For instance, the bigger your heart gets, the less worried you are about breaking it. Love seems to provide its own kind of protection. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your ego likes to think it’s the source of your strength and therefore it beats its chest in a display of dominance when its position is challenged. The truth is real strength has nothing to do with posturing. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Don’t assume being happy is better than being other emotional tones. The best feeling is the one coming up. Fully feeling is fully processing, and this leads to peace.

Let’s celebrate our sports stars Daryl Holden
I
t’s time to celebrate our sporting prowess. I’m talking about the 2022 Ashburton Guardian Mid Canterbury Sports Awards on May 13, which would have even more riding on it than usual. Why? Because it would be the 50th celebration of the annual Guardian awards, which recognises and celebrates all things sport, which is so much a key part of the fabric of life in Mid Canterbury. That’s certainly the case in our district where a combination of an excellent climate, first-class facilities, passionate
volunteers and coaches, and natural talent makes for a potent combination. A quick look through last year’s award nominees and winners shows that the Mid Canterbury sporting production line is humming, churning out some gifted performers at regional, national and even international level. But for an event like this to work we need the sporting bodies, the clubs and organisations to do their bit. And that bit is about nominating the athletes, officials and administrators for the various categories. Without that necessary input in big numbers, the event could fall flat. Nominations are now open – but they close soon on Monday, April 25 – and there are categories galore for junior, senior, masters, teams, officials and
administrators. The Robilliard Trophy, recognising outstanding services to sport, is one of those special awards on the agenda because it recognises selfless long-time devotees, who basically make sport happen. So now it’s up to you.
for attention and recognition, this is your chance for a bit of self-promotion. Take the opportunity to nominate your star performers, your quiet achievers. It doesn’t really matter if they win or not. Simply being nominated, and
the opportunity to nominate your “ Take star performers, your quiet achievers. It doesn’t really matter if they win or not
Get your sporting thinking caps on and send in your award nominations before that cut-off deadline. For smaller organisations, which don’t often grab the headlines or who may battle
getting the publicity that goes with that, makes the awards an ideal marketing platform to promote your sport and to retain and even attract new members. Though the awards focus on
excellence, we can never forget that not all those who strive, succeed. And that’s where the role of Ashburton Guardian awards, and public recognition in a small community such as ours, is important. It’s why our awards also recognise many other qualities like ability, resilience, effort and selflessness. In Mid Canterbury, where we rely so much on volunteers to make sport and numerous other activities happen, I imagine we have hundreds who would tick all those boxes. Now is the chance to hear about them. So make it happen Mid Canterbury. Get those nominations in before it’s too late and then join us at Hotel Ashburton for one of the warm fuzzy social events of the year.

Soaring into Cup contention Left – It’s smiles all round as Gerard O’Reilly brings The Falcon back to the birdcage. O’Reilly enjoyed a good night out on Saturday, scoring a winning double.

A potential tilt at the New Zealand Trotting Cup later this year awaits exciting pacer The Falcon, and with that will likely come a tough decision for driver Gerard O’Reilly. The up-and-coming pacer was the toast of Addington Raceway on Saturday night as he claimed the first ever running of the $100,000 Country Championships for O’Reilly and his trainers, Geoff and James Dunn. The four-year-old out-toughed his rivals over the 3200m distance, underlining his staying qualities and making him a perfect contender for the cup on the second Tuesday in November. But O’Reilly and the Dunn’s also already have a contender for the NZ Cup in Laver – one of the toughest pacers in the land, meaning that at some point, the Rakaia horseman may be forced into making a decision about which one to sit behind. On Saturday night none of that mattered though, as O’Reilly basked in the glory of another big race win, sneaking up the markers late to nab the pace-making Allamericanlover and take home the $55,000 winner’s purse for the gelding’s connections. “It was a great performance, we followed the right two horses which helped a lot,” O’Reilly said. “The ran along a fair bit too,

which played right into our hands, he’s such a great stayer that he was always going to keep coming at them.” The Dunns and O’Reilly combination is becoming quite the force to be reckoned with, and the Listed win on Saturday night was the ninth black type race O’Reilly and Geoff Dunn have registered together, and the second with the training partnership of James and Geoff. On his own, O’Reilly now has 18 black type victories next to his name.
The Falcon’s win capped a good night at the office for O’Reilly, who also saluted early in the evening with the Mid Canterbury-trained and owned Shanika. Prepared by Brent White at the Ashburton Racecourse, the mare is raced by Wendy Nordqvist and the Templeton Family Trust. Saturday night’s victory was the third of her career, and the second with White after she began with Robert and Jenna Dunn at Woodend Beach. Purchased at the National Year-

Pathway set for bumper season Matt Markham If just the numbers are anything to go by, then a bumper netball season lies in wait this season. Mid Canterbury Netball were able to finalise their competition structure and determine which teams would be playing in which competitions this season over the long weekend, after a round of grading games on Thursday night at the EA Networks Centre. With the Premier competitions just around the corner, set down to start on April 28, there’s some real excitement around the courts, with a huge boost in numbers and the return of a number of clubs to the premier fold after years of absence. But the boost in teams doesn’t come without its problems. The three-tier premier competition is designed for six teams in each of the three divisions, meaning two of the 20 sides entered for the year would miss out on Thursday night play, and instead compete in the Saturday afternoon competition.
On Thursday night, nine shortened matches were played to sort the final sides out in both Premier 1 and Premier 2, with four teams already confirmed in each of the competitions based on their standing last year. The Premier 1 competition was determined on last year’s results as well, with teams in Premier 2 having to wait until the end of the first round to get a chance to elevate themselves up into the top league when promotion and relegation happens. Premier 1 will this year be made of up defending champions Hampstead, along with Methven, Celtic, College, United and Southern. Mid Canterbury Netball’s centre manager, Erin Tasker, said numbers were up across the board for this season, including in social and Saturday afternoon secondary school netball, which was a real boom for the sport at the local level. It had forced a change in the competition format in the Saturday secondary school grades, with a shift from the traditional three grades of six to two grades of six and one of eight. Wednesday night social netball has 25 teams entered.
Tasker said seeing the return of both Allenton and Rakaia to the premier grades was a great encouragement for the season, and that news of a shift to the orange traffic light setting by the
Government meant that they no longer had to worry about restrictions on the number of people allowed in the EA Networks Centre to play or support during the season.

Tough loss for MC Pickleball Ashburton to open its doors United seniors Matt Markham A week after setting their intent for the season, the Mid Canterbury United senior football side hit a stumbling block over the long weekend. The New World Premiership contenders trekked to Christchurch to take on Universities to celebrate Easter, buoyed by their second-round victory over Parklands at the Ashburton Domain the week prior. But try as they might, the blue-andreds just couldn’t get themselves into the match against the University side, eventually losing 0-3 to see them fall back down the competition ladder.
Missing their main strike weapon, last season’s golden boot Luke Martin, Mid Canterbury were given the opportunity to start with some fresh blood up the front on attack, but some determined University defence kept them out for the entire 90 minutes. The hosts scored in the 38th minute of the match to take the lead which they held into the halftime break, and that lead became 2-0 after 20 minutes in the second. Mid Canterbury, to their credit, stood staunch and fended off many attacks on their goal, but in the 84th minute an unlucky own goal extended the lead to three, and the game was effectively over. With a game in hand over the majority of their rivals, Mid Canterbury will be looking forward to getting back to their home domain this coming weekend when they host Waimak United on the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

The fast-growing sport of pickleball is set to open its doors to the community in an effort to not only increase numbers, but introduce even more people to the sport. On May 1, the members of Pickleball Ashburton will be on hand to offer their experience and skills in an open day. The session will run for two hours from 1pm until 3pm, with normal Sunday afternoon pickleball to follow. Pickleball Ashburton member David Bishop said the idea behind the open day was to create an opportunity for potential new players to come along and give the game a go, and hopefully pick it up as they look to extend their presence further, “The long-term aim would be to get reg-
ular playing numbers growing to a stage where a league-type teams competition could be played regularly,” he said. “We have developed a strong relationship with Selwyn Pickleball, which has resulted in a number of their players being regulars in Ashburton and vice versa.” All that is required for the open day is some non-marking shoes, but anyone who wished to stay on for the regular session later in the afternoon would need to pay the normal $4 fee to the stadium. Pickleball Ashburton gets together on four occasions during the week; Tuesday from 5-7pm, Wednesday from 9.30am11.30am, Friday from 6-8pm and Sunday from 3-5pm. Most sessions are conducted as ‘pick up’ games, with the format and type of games played dependent on how many people arrive to play. More information can be found by checking out Pickleball Ashburton’s Facebook page.

Glenn’s Black Ferns coach no Moore Matt Markham Family sat at the forefront of the decision behind embattled rugby coach, Glenn Moore dropping a bombshell on the national rugby scene over the weekend, as he resigned from his role as head coach of the Black Ferns. Just days after a damning review of the culture within the national women’s team was released and Moore himself was vindicated by New Zealand Rugby and retained as coach to this year’s World Cup, he sent shockwaves through the rugby community with his resignation from the role on Saturday. And while the review was sparked over allegations made by team member Te Kura Ngata-Arenegamate, who said she had a mental breakdown because of critical comments made by Moore, the coach said he wasn’t the only one impacted by it in the long run. “I don’t think it’s just about me,” he said. “I think it’s about other people around me, that have actually had to witness that and take on board that. I’m talking about family members, my ageing parents, my kids, my partner … yes it’s had an impact on me but the hardest part is watching what it does to them.” In announcing his decision over the weekend, Moore said he sought advice from those closest to him but a key factor in the decision was the impact the review had taken on the team as they prepare for this year’s World Cup. “I feel it is in the best interest of the team that I step down. “We’re in the last six months
think it’s about other “ Ipeople around me, that have actually had to witness that and take on board that. I’m talking about family members, my ageing parents, my kids, my partner … yes it’s had an impact on me but the hardest part is watching what it does to them
leading into a World Cup and I really felt that the team needed to be able to be fully focused on performance and what happens on the grass. “I certainly didn’t want to be any distraction to them and felt the best thing to do was to step away and ensure the team has the best opportunity of winning the World Cup. “It was a really emotional and tough decision, and it was off the back of quite a bit consultation with my family and people that are close to me,” he said publicly after the decision. Moore had, until the weekend, kept quiet on the allegations levelled by Te Kura Ngata-Arenegamate but spoke freely about them for the first time after announcing his decision – stating that he had waited to comment
out of respect to his player. “I just didn’t think it was appropriate. My concern through that was that TK was okay. “My focus was on ensuring that her wellbeing was being supported and I didn’t think there was going to be any benefit in trying to add any fuel to that. “I did not agree with the allegations she made, and they were misleading. “The post provided no content and unfairly and inaccurately represented me as a coach and a person. “My values and beliefs were called into question, and it was very disappointing not only to me but also to my family.” Moore’s record with the Black Ferns has been quite impressive. He can claim a 90 per cent winning record, a World Cup and be-
coming the first women’s team named World Rugby’s Team of the Year. And while he’s stepped down from the role that he’s been in for the past seven years – Moore is still set to be a keen part of the team at this year’s World Cup, just in a completely different role. “I totally believe this group can win that World Cup and I’m backing them, and I’ll be supporting them.” Moore is yet to talk publicly about what his next steps will be, and while both Wayne Smith and Sir Graham Henry are linked with the Black Ferns side currently it’s believed that Allan Bunting, the national women’s sevens coach and also the man at the helm of the Super Rugby Aupiki winning Chiefs Manawa, is favoured to take up the head coach role.
OPINION
The Black Ferns, Glenn Moore and culture Matt Markham
T
he internal review into the Black Ferns rugby set up makes for interesting reading. Established off the back of a rather damning social media post by a team member, levelling some serious accusations at then head coach, Glenn Moore, you’d have expected it to be scathing of the man who supposedly brought about its creation. Yet it didn’t and it wasn’t. Flicking through the 30-page document which outlined all that is wrong with the women’s
game at a national level here in New Zealand, you’ll find just one mention of Moore. Just the one. Look for the term culture and you’ll find it referenced on more than 40 occasions. Included in the findings were issues such as New Zealand
sional model and significant communication issues existing between players, coaches and managers, the New Zealand Rugby Players Association and other stakeholders. Sure, Moore has some part to play in those concerns – but he’s hardly a lone wolf in it all.

Can he be the person to blame for the report highlighting that there needs to more resilience learned by players around supposed issues such as non-selection? That’s where New Zealand Rugby needs to take some ac-
countability for their part in failing to properly support and set up the correct procedures to ensure that all involved are sufficiently catered for. The women’s game has developed at such a frenetic pace and while the rest of the world has adapted and evolved, New Zealand could be found guilty of lagging behind. The results on the paddock would certainly suggest so. But to pinpoint the spotlight on just the one person – as has been the case through this entire ordeal – is a little unnerving. It’s too easy in the professional sporting realm to blame the coach. They’re the fall guy, or girl, and the buck stops with them. On the field yes, but off it? Perhaps that’s a different situation all together.
