Licence backlog frustrates Daniel Alvey
A Mid Canterbury hunter feels for fellow wannabe district duck shooters caught up in a gun licence application backlog. “It (process) definitely could be quicker,” said Matthew Hood, who experienced similar waiting time frustration when he renewed his gun license in 2020, just as Covid-19 hit and slowed everything up. A gun licence lasts for 10 years so Hood would not be impacted this time round, but many have been. Processing challenges around the pandemic left some gun licence applicants nervously wondering if they would be ready for the start of the duck shooting season on May 7. In Mid Canterbury, the average wait time for a firearms licence was six months, but police have warned that the whole process could take up to 12 months. As of April 4, there were 121 Mid Canterbury gun licence applications being processed. The licence application process had been held up longer than usual because part of approving a permit involved a firearms’ officer making home visits to inspect gun safes and firearms of all applicants. But visits could not be done in Alert Level 3 or 4, which meant

ing in the bush. “Without overseas travel, more people are using the money and time to go bush,” Hood said. A non-licence holder could shoot, but they must be supervised by someone who was regis-
tered, though that person could not shoot at the same time. “For deer stalking, this is okay, as generally only one person is shooting at a time, but for duck shooting it’s not as easy,” Hood said.
Unsung poppy pioneer Malcolm Hopwood There’s an unsung hero in Ashburton’s midst. Every year the Ashburton RSA receives about a hundred fabric poppies, carefully crafted by a resident at Radius Care. When contacted, the poppy producer wished to remain anonymous. However RSA president, Merv Brenton, is full of praise for her generosity. He knows who she
is, but respects her desire to quietly contribute to Anzac Day. He’s sold about 60 poppies so far and has about 100 left to sell. The felt poppies are carefully crafted and secured with a button in the middle. They also contain two fabric leaves. Brenton said they are very durable and add an Ashburton touch to Anzac Day. “They’re quite special and their sale contributes to our funding which goes towards the welfare of RSA veterans and their families,” he said. She’s a poppy pioneer and Brenton is pleased with what she’s done. “I always send her a letter of appreciation,” he said.

Seeing red – in a good way Gorringe aims to make 150 donations Malcolm Hopwood Murray Gorringe has received the news he’s been seeking just as he gave his 125th unit of blood in Ashburton. Gorringe, a blood donor for 48 years, thought his goal of giving 150 units was gone because he would have been over the donor retirement age of 71. But the New Zealand Blood Service team have just told him that the age limit had been raised and they’d welcome his quarterly O positive donation into his mid70s, as long as he met the medical criteria. “I can now reach my target,” Gorringe said with a smile. It would be some target if he got there because Gorringe’s 125th unit has been described as “an amazing contribution” by New Zealand Blood Service southern region team leader Alison Keast. “He’s one of only a small group of Kiwis who’s given blood for nearly 50 years,’’ she said. “His remarkable achievement is to be celebrated. “It shows the dedication of someone who understands the need to give blood.” Being a donor is very important to Gorringe ever since he worked for the Post Office back in 1974. His telecommunications branch was relocated to Mount Albert in Auckland and, across the road, was a blood donor centre. “I gave blood and decided it was something I always wanted to do every three months from then on,” Gorringe said. He shifted around New Zealand working for the Post Office and then Telecom, always regularly giving blood. Eventually he moved to Ashburton to be with his late partner and continued to give his quarterly unit. “It helped keep me fit and my blood pressure down,” he said. But there were two other reasons. His three children are all A negative, a rare blood group, and Gorringe’s O positive meets their need.
Donor technician, Sarah Jamieson, supervises Murray Gorringe’s 125th unit of blood. “If the situation required an immediate direct transfer, I could do it,” he said. “I feel good about that.” While he’s never needed to receive blood or plasma, he had a serious injury 17 years ago where he recognised the importance of a transfusion being available. “I was cutting wood with a chainsaw when it caught in my clothing and cut my wrist,’’ he
said. “My arm was pulled on to the chainsaw and, after surgery, one artery in my wrist was repaired but the other was permanently damaged. I also suffered tendon and nerve damage. “My name and blood group was in the system. It helped me survive.” That’s the other reason why Gorringe strongly recommends being a donor. If people were in-
volved in a serious accident, it’s important the hospital has a record of their blood group, he said. His injured hand hasn’t enabled Gorringe to work fulltime since then but he’s held down several part-time jobs in Ashburton. Tuesday’s visit was just another donation but now his goal is just over six years’ time when he can give his 150th unit.
“I get satisfaction every time my blood is given. “Without the New Zealand Blood Service, so many lives would be lost,” he said. And after a drink, snack and brief rest, Gorringe was gone and active again. He was determined to trim a tree at the back of his property on Trevors Road. Just watch the chainsaw.

Portrait wish close to becoming a reality Lili Haydon Tamara Hemi is thrilled to have finally got a traditional Mãori portrait for her family under way. Hemi and her four children will be photographed in Ashburton on Sunday in the first stage of the service offered by Taranaki couple Gareth and Teowai Ratahi. The pair established Poihakena Portraits in 2014 to capture Maori heritage by taking photos of families wearing traditional gear, including moko (tattoo) stamps, to capture the pride and beauty of their whanau. Those photos are then turned into wall art and Hemi, who has wanted one since seeing her sister-in-law’s portrait in the North
Island, can’t wait for their sitting. “I have always wanted (one of) these photos,’’ Hemi said. “I could have gotten normal photos, but just wanted something different and which included the kids’ culture.’’ They will be one of four Mid Canterbury parties getting photos taken this weekend. The Ratahis, who return to Ashburton for the first time since 2019, have photographed thousands of people and transformed those images into portraits in New Zealand and Australia. With New Zealand history becoming a part of the school curriculum for Year 1 to 10 students from next year, and Te Reo being taught to our next generation, Teowai had seen a resurgence of interest in those wanting to find out and reconnect with their heritage. “It’s an easy first step into Te Ao Maori (the Maori world) for people looking to connect,” she said.

Three Waters work likely to impact local projects Jonathan Leask Ashburton District Council’s boss says the Three Waters reform transition “troubles me greatly’’ because business as usual would suffer. Council chief executive Hamish Riach has raised concerns of “inevitable pressure across” the whole local Government sector in the likely move from council operation to the Three Waters entities. “There has to be an impact on our business as usual,” he said. “It’s a significant issue that is troubling me greatly.” The Three Waters proposal centred around the management of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater assets out of the hands of the country’s 67 councils to four large entities, with the aim of providing better water services around the country at a lower cost. Riach’s concerns were raised as the council finally received a response from the Department of Internal Affairs, answering questions it posed in September. Riach said the response felt “out of step with the current situation” given so much had happened since the questions were submitted. Riach said every council chief executive in New Zealand was concerned about the dramatic impact on their staff from the Three Waters reform. The transition work would require inhouse expertise so it wasn’t as simple as “taking a compensation cheque and hiring a consultant” to solve the problem, he said. “I cannot see how the Three Waters enti-

ties can be formed, and be successful, and continue to provide our communities with clean water unless we cooperate.” But with that cooperation comes a $16.8m handout, which the Ashburton council was due to receive for handing over its assets. Councils were now able to apply for the first tranche of $500 million of funding from the Three Waters reform package available from July 1.
Cost cuts shorten pool opening hours Reducing unnecessary operating costs is behind a reduction in hours at the EA Networks Centre pools. From April 26 the pools, sauna, and spa will close two hours earlier at 7pm on weekdays and 5pm in the weekends. Closing times for the stadium will remain the same, while gym hours are also under review and could change in the future. Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said Covid-19 had changed the way people exercised and the facility needed to ensure it ran cost-effectively by matching its services with community demand. Recent data had shown that only a handful of people were using the facility in the final hours of the day. “Like many other businesses and recreation centres around the country, Covid has had a big impact on the EA Networks Centre and put pressure on our budgets.’’

Turning orange brings relief Daniel Alvey Relief. That summed up the feeling of Ashburton’s The Print Room nightclub owners pleased their business was back in business. Gareth and Jamie Cadogan were able to open the doors to their downtown establishment for the first time since January once the Government had waved its orange flag just before Easter. The change in Covid-19 traffic light settings from red to orange, and with no limitations on numbers at indoor venues, and no need for face masks, came at just the right time for the Cadogans. “We were all so nervous before the weekend,” Jamie said, uncertain how it would go. The bar has been closed on and off since last August due to Covid restrictions, but on Saturday about 180 people came through the doors. Gareth said that was good to see, but it was quieter than expected. “Because the announcement came late, people might have already made plans to travel for Easter.” The club was now focusing on becoming a premium entertainment venue in Ashburton and had been able to refresh the club through Covid. That included a new lick of paint on the walls and a new bar area.

Dirtying the air on purifiers Lili Haydon Mid Canterbury school principals are questioning the value in getting just one air purifier to try to beat Covid-19. That’s the feeling of Rakaia School principal Mark Ellis and Tinwald School colleague Peter Livingstone, who have doubts about the Ministry of Education’s plans to provide air purifiers to about 2500 schools nationwide to limit the spread of the virus. Amid concerns of another wave of infections in schools during winter, the Ministry of Education has delivered portable air cleaners to every state and state integrated school, with 23 in the Ashburton district alone. The ministry hoped that being able to filter the air would help reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission. The problem Ellis and Livingstone have with the programme was that only one classroom per school would receive an air purifier. “One per room . . . that will be the challenge,’’ Ellis said. The air purifier plan comes as school leaders wrestle with how to keep children warm in winter, while also trying to reduce the risk of the virus spreading. Opening windows and doors – even in winter – would best reduce the risk of transmission compared to an air cleaner, but it could leave children cold. Livingstone believed the carbon dioxide monitor the school had been using had been vital and would continue to be an important tool. It allowed the school to identify where there was good and bad ventilation in the building. Luckily, Tinwald School had also reached its Covid-19 peak, Livingstone said. But, he warned, Covid-19 was no regular cold or virus. “Colds don’t normally halve my roll.”

People’s choice is a waterfall Malcolm Hopwood A Mid Canterbury artist has been a clear winner in the People’s Choice category at the Zonta Ashburton Female Art Awards (ZAFAA). Karen Boyce’s Falling was a firm favourite with the 400 people who voted in the People’s Choice. While three visiting judges decide on the premier and young generation awards, Zonta allowed the public to choose their favourite art work. Boyce’s oil on canvas of a waterfall near Windwhistle was a popular selection. While the waterfall is the central feature, she explains the title, Falling, is “also a reflection on life”. “I think people chose my painting because there’s a connection with nature,” Boyce said. “I’m ecstatic about having it chosen, it’s really awesome.” Boyce has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from De Montfort University in Leicester, England, but has only seriously dedicated herself to painting in recent years. The Zonta awards will be on display at the Ashburton Art Gallery until Sunday. Collection and exhibitions assistant, Hannah Crichton, describes the People’s Choice as “very important because it shows what the public responds to”. For Karen Boyce it “gives me the confidence to carry on”.

Pothole eliminator busy on Forks Road Community
provides feedback on Annual Plan
Fine weather on Tuesday provided the perfect opportunity for Mayor Neil Brown and Councillor Stuart Wilson to see the pothole eliminator at work on Forks Road. Council added $300,000 to this year’s roading repair programme to have an extra stabilising machine work in the district. It is focused on potholes.
Ashburton District residents have a little over two weeks remaining to have their say on Council’s Annual Plan.
The stabiliser mills the top layer of the road; cement is added and then the road compacted ready for chipseal.
Councillors have taken their plan to the community via three town meetings and an online presentation, and submissions will be accepted until 5pm on Friday 6 May.
Mayor Brown said while the process looked simple, it relied on experienced crews testing the road base, milling it to the right height and then adding the required volume of cement. “The extra $300,000 is being used to stabilise around 8000 square metres of road in the Ashburton District. Repairing it now, before winter, will stop these roads further deteriorating and lengthen their life.”
Mayor Neil Brown said while they would have liked to see more people attend the public meetings, the quality of questions and discussion had been very good.
they think of using the reserves to give our roading repairs programme a boost. Last May’s rain and floods did a lot of damage to our network and we need to catch up because roads are vital for people to get to work or school, and take our farming produce to market.
a reduced amount of money coming from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to maintain roads. “So we will also be lobbying the decision-makers in Parliament to ensure districts like ours get more of a share of the road user charges and petrol excise duty that they collect.”
Mayor Brown said Council planned to use $1.7m from a forestry reserve fund to help pay for the work.
“We know that increasing numbers of big trucks on our roads over the past years are also taking a toll. Roads built 30 years ago were not subject to the same volumes of freight and weight.”
“Our Annual Plan asks residents what
Mayor Brown said this was coupled with
Ashburton District has one of the biggest roading networks in the country and its roading contractor HEB has had two pothole repair crews, each with a special road stabilising machine, working in the district while the weather is still warm.
Council is planning to spend around $18 million on its roads in the next financial year and is looking for community approval in its Annual Plan, out now for consultation. The $18m covers road maintenance, renewals, stabilisations and repairs, as well as reseals of some footpaths and roads.
The importance of reserves
Reserves form an important part of any balance sheet, for Councils, businesses, or any organisation undertaking significant works. In Ashburton's case, on behalf of the community, the Council holds a number of reserves with a total value of $65.6 million. The forestry reserve is a relatively small part of that, with a balance of $5.1 million, which has been built up over time from the sale of Council-owned forestry and forestry land. By far the largest component is the property reserve, now standing at $27.1 million, which is funded from a mix of capital gains on Council property sales and depreciation. Depreciation is the amount by which 1

The monies received from rates and other sources to cover this cost will be placed in a reserve in order to have a fund to cover its eventual replacement. It is a requirement of councils to cover the depreciation of their assets by the amount they charge for rates. A number of years ago the Queenstown Lakes District Council did not rate for depreciation, which, although leading to lower rate increases for a period, led to a rundown in reserves, and eventually a higher cost when those assets needed replacement. But the importance of reserves goes beyond just having cash stored for asset replacement in the future. In the
“We encourage residents to have their say on this Annual Plan, which spells out what we aim to do in 2022-23 and how we will pay for it.
The overall effect of the Annual Plan is a 9.4 per cent average rates rise. Mayor Brown said people could use the online rates calculator to see what the result would be for their individual properties. “Bear in mind too that property valuations have also gone up much higher for urban people compared to rural areas.”
Council's assets reduce in value each year. Each group of assets is written off over a certain number of years, depending on the type of asset. For example, if a building costs $1 million, and is expected to have a lifetime of 50 years, then for Council's accounting purposes that building will be depreciated at $20,000 per year.
“The new build is a few months behind schedule because of Covid-19 lockdowns and supply chains issues, but it is still within the budget and its contingency. Fair to say, though, that we are keeping a close eye on it.
“There have been some obvious challenges, like record-high inflation and Covid-19, but the work we plan to do is all about maintaining current levels of service and meeting Government compliance for things like drinking water.”
John Falloon, Councillor As part of the Annual Plan process, Council is currently consulting with the community as to whether or not $1.7 million should be taken from the forestry reserve and used for repairing the district's roads.
“Some of the more common questions have been around the state of our roads, which we are proposing to improve with a $1.7m boost from forestry reserves, and about how the new library and civic centre building is tracking.
short term, they can be borrowed internally to fund other Council projects, particularly, as is often the case, where the cost of borrowing is greater than the reserves are earning in term deposits or other investments. Major projects such as the recently completed CBD redevelopment was partly funded from reserves such as the footpaths and roading reserves, with the balance being funded by external funding. This is the case with most infrastructure developments which are funded by a mix of reserves and new borrowing, unless we can obtain central government funding as we did recently for the relief sewer from Bridge Street to Milton Road.
Residents can find out more about what’s proposed and have their say online at itsourplace.nz. They can also watch a replay of the online meeting and find explanations of what’s planned for Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia. All submissions received will be discussed by Councillors following hearings on 24 and 25 May.

Grant ensures doors stay open Malcolm Hopwood
A $30,000 Lion Foundation grant will help keep the doors of the Braided Rivers Community Trust Ashburton Event Centre open. “It offers us a lifeline,” event centre manager, Roger Farr, said of the windfall from the latest Lion Foundation funding round. He said the Ashburton Event Centre had been impacted badly by Covid-19 over the past two years through cancelled performances, so the funding boost was very pleasing. “The funding will help with operational costs and keep the venue running,’’ he said. “The Lion Foundation has always been a reliable source of funds.” The $30,000 would be dedicated to administration costs such as rates, power and insurance. The Lion Foundation’s grant comes at a time when the Government’s traffic light setting has changed from red to orange, enabling shows to return to the event centre without a limitation on numbers. The first production in the venue under those new restrictions would be The Last Five Years on April 29-30. It’s a musical presented by the South Canterbury Drama League. “I’m very relieved with the booking and I’m hoping for many more,” Farr said.
Thanks to a Lion Foundation grant the folks at the Braided Rivers Trust Ashburton Event Centre can sleep at night knowing that their funding woes have been alleviated. Inset – Roger Farr. The major Lion Foundation recipient was the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU), which received $80,000 for staff salaries and towards leasing the grounds at its A&P Showgrounds headquarters. CEO Tanya Dearns said she was “extremely pleased we’ve got over the line”. The amount was an increase
on previous years and would go towards salaries for her rugby development officer, club competition and administration officers, she said. “We have 2000 registered members and, on any given Saturday during the season, about a quarter of the Mid Canterbury population has some involvement with rugby.”

Connector gains a new set of wheels Lili Haydon Mid Canterbury Connector has a new community vehicle whizzing around helping those in need – and it’s thrilled one of the scheme’s leaders. Safe Communities Ashburton co-ordinator, Lesley Symington, knows that getting the new car would be welcomed by those without transportation options. “It’s for people feeling cut off,” Symington said.
The Mid Canterbury Connector is a community transport service co-ordinated by Safe Communities Ashburton. The vehicle brings people living in rural and remote areas of the district into Ashburton for a variety of reasons, including medical appointments. It’s a vital service run by four volunteers, who drive clients to their appointments. The new car was made a reality thanks to Mid Canterbury Vehicle Trust and Environment Canterbury funding, but users still needed to pay a fee to help with the vehicle’s operating costs. Prices ranged from $15 to $20 for a return trip, with up to six-year-olds free. “Fares vary depending on where people are travelling from,” Symington said.

My view is the workers are doing a fantastic job under extreme circumstances. When you consider the two schools involved with this intersection, and the main road traffic, it is amazing the work that has been carried out. Yes, there is still a lot of work to be done but, to someone who has been involved in using this intersection from the day the first red cone appeared, there has been a tremendous amount of work done already.
The road markings do make a difference and I am cautious when turning left into East Street from the avenue, as there is a pedestrian crossing there which I would imagine would be under a red arrow when the lights are working. In the meantime, coming down Walnut Ave and turning left into East Street requires extreme caution. I, for one, would be very pleased when the work is complete, but I do think the work to date has been carried out in a professional and safe manner. I certainly wouldn’t like to be responsible for all the traffic and pedestrians who use this route. Let’s try to keep it accident free by we, as motorists, doing our job. Raylene Phillips

Drain, then rinse under cold water, then drain thoroughly, squeezing out excess liquid. Make a paste out of the sugar, garlic, ginger, chilli flakes, nori fish and sauce (if not using fish sauce add 2 Tbsp of water). Mix together the drained cabbage, paste, Daikon and spring onions so all the cabbage is coated. Press the mixture into a clean 4 litre plastic container and press a piece of

OUR VIEW
Opportunities there; you need to look T
here are opportunities everywhere, but only if you’re prepared to look. A growing trend has become apparent in recent weeks and months about a quiet discord among Mid Canterbury locals and their belief that our district isn’t catering for the younger generation. Barely a week goes by without a mention of the fact that there is nothing to do in Mid Canterbury for kids, and it’s generally met with the same amount of enthusiasm from corners of the region. Suggestions centre around the inclusion of a climbing wall and a hydroslide at the EA Networks Centre, a Chipmunks Play Area, a new and better skate and bike park, a ten-pin bowling alley and a general improvement on what is available for the everyday Mid Cantabrian.
Matt Markham It’s a valid point to raise, but only if you have chosen to live like a hermit and not actually step out into our region and see what’s available already, because there’s plenty and it’s been seriously under-utilised by locals. In many ways it’s a generational issue. Such problems weren’t even considered 20 years ago, people just got on with life and took hold of what was in front of them. If you didn’t have a model boat to throw out on the lake and steer around – you’d grab a couple of sticks and find the nearest stream and watch them race.
Ten-pin bowling alleys were a treat to attend somewhere outside of the region – but a few old milk bottles and a football generally did the trick down the hallway, or driveway. And if you wanted to climb?
would wait for most at what is actually available. While it might not look like it on face value, explore a little deeper and you’ll find a whole raft of opportunities for people, both young and old to get out
of bemoaning the lack of “ Instead opportunities, the best course of action would be to jump in the car and see where the road takes you
The old tree out the back of the property was always sufficient enough to fill the burning need. If we take a step back, remove the green-envied glasses from the brim of the nose and actually step out into the district and see what’s already there – a surprise
and experience something new on our own doorstep. You can step up into the hills and take one of the many amazing walks and trails at our disposal, hit the bike and get out on the Ashburton Bike Park, grab a kayak and hit Lake Hood for a few hours or head to the EA
Networks Centre and check out what’s going on there – there’s generally always something happening. If it’s fun you’re after, why not head to the Rakaia Gorge and have a spin around in a jet boat – the scenery alone is a better feeling than seeing all ten pins fall down on a bowling alley and you’ll get such a rush seeing what’s within reach in under an hour from your own back door. We live in an incredible part of New Zealand, our little own slice of paradise from the cooler winter months through to the heat of summer. But we under-utilise it so much. Perhaps instead of bemoaning the lack of opportunities, the best course of action would be to jump in the car and see where the road takes you. Odds on that you’d be surprised at what you find.

Cane back for Chiefs
T
he Gallagher Chiefs have named their side to kick off Super Round Melbourne against the Waratahs this Friday at 8pm NZT. A 27-man squad has been confirmed to travel across the ditch for two matches against the Waratahs and Reds before the team returns home to face the Brumbies at FMG Stadium Waikato on May 7. Super Round Melbourne will feature all 12 Super Rugby Pacific teams playing Round 10 fixtures at AAMI Park this weekend. In the front row, Aidan Ross regains his starting spot at loosehead prop, joined by the returning All Black hooker Samisoni Taukei’aho, while Angus Ta’avao keeps his tighthead prop position.
In the loose forwards, after captaining the side to victory over Moana Pasifika last weekend, Luke Jacobson shifts to blindside flanker as Gallagher Chiefs co-captain Sam Cane returns to start at openside. The powerful Pita Gus Sowakula returns to don his familiar number 8 jersey. The only changes to the backline that faced Moana Pasifika are on the wings. Quinn Tupaea returns to start on the left wing while Jonah Lowe shifts to a starting position on the right. In the reserves, Bradley Slater will provide cover at hooker while Ollie Norris shifts to the bench in jersey 17. The only other changes to the bench are in the backline. Xavier Roe returns from injury
to cover halfback and Inga Finau has been brought in as a back replacement, possibly in-line to make his Super Rugby Pacific debut in jersey 23. Gallagher Chiefs Head Coach Clayton McMillan is focused on growth as the team transition towards playing Australian-based sides leading into the finals. “We’re focused on growth in our game as there were some things we made progress in during the first half of the competition and some areas that we got exposed. “We back ourselves to get to a quarter-final and when you get to that point it’s a one-off game. “So it’s about finding as much growth as you can between now and then to give yourself a decent chance.” said McMillan.

First up was Iris’s group comprising of Marg T on the piano, Irene, Suzie and Alison on accordions and Janet, Iris and Rose on keyboards. We played a good mix of tunes including Call of the Bellbird and a lively Country bracket. Colin, being a man of many musical talents entertained us on the piano, playing two Ukranian folk songs and their National Anthem as well as Yellow Bird and a Beatles bracket. As Iris said, we have a lot of pianists in our group, each with their own different style. Margaret on the spoons and Ian on his ukelele played and sang some good old favourites, certainly got many toes tapping. Elizabeth, just back from a broken arm and a caravanning holiday was kind enough to fill in at very short notice – she played a lovely selection of love songs. Raffle winners were Rose, Kate, Karen and Ann. Irene’s group of Irene on her accordian, Suzie on ukelele and Karen on the piano were on next – Irene always manages to find a new and beautiful tune to play. This time it was Roses in Bloom, adapted by Iris into three parts and harmony. Sounded great. Janet on her keyboard played a few tunes we don’t hear very often, she included ‘When they Sound the All Clear as a tribute to Anzac Day. Last up was Ann, our fourth pianist for the evening; she played a bracket of lovely classical pieces including two Easter pieces, The Old Rugged Cross and Christ to the Lord. Another lovely one was ‘If You Believe” which has a special human story behind it. Ann, our Treasurer reminded us all that our Subs are due. Many thanks to all our musicians, your talents were all very much enjoyed by everyone.

A beautiful Easter weekend saw the Brandon course overflowing with golfers from beginners, just giving at a go, to old hackers just trying to hit one good shot out of a hundred. Our great game gets into your blood and it is wonderful to see everyone having fun. On Saturday we played a Greensome game with a mixed field. Picking up the Coasters Trophy for best score of the day with a nett 65 were Lefty May and Ken Clucas. Looks like the boys are prepping well for the Watson Cup coming up in a couple of weeks. Top score in the Keig cup for family pairing was Blair and Karl Snowball with 66.5. Second in the Coasters were Paddy Bradford and Rob Coyle, then second in the Keig were Dannie Ooustihazen and Danielle King. Well done to all.
ferent coloured abutilons (Chinese Lanterns). The Raffle was won by Allan Johnstone. The next meeting will be a Pot Luck Lunch at 1pm on Friday 20th May, 2022, to be held at the Domain Pavilion, Walnut Avenue.

Hope you all had a great Easter and enjoyed the goodies the weekend brings. An Anzac Tournament is being held in Christchurch next Monday in which some of our members are playing. The following Sunday we have our Club Women’s and Men’s Drawn Doubles. This coming Saturday, 23 April, we are trialling play for members and the general public, following requests for weekend games. This will continue through the winter months and is in addition to our Tuesday and Thursday play, so come along and learn the game, you will enjoy it. Boules and tuition will be provided. See you at 115 Racecourse Road at 1pm.
The Ashburton Electronic Organ Club held their Club Night on April 18. Then on Monday in the Turkey Trot, mixed day, individual stableford, Sharon Bradford set the course alight with a superb gross 74 for 42 points to pick up top prize. Also on 42 points was Robert George. George Brown and Brent MacGregor came in 3rd and 4th with 39 and 38 respectively. Again well done to everyone. Story of the day from Monday was yet another hole-in-one. This time Peter Walker was the star with a perfect shot on hole number 4. Now in my honest opinion, for whatever it is worth, I reckon that Peter is the straightest hitter and one of the cleanest strikers of a golf ball that I have come across, and I dare say that he will have more than a handful of aces. That may be why he has never been asked to join the hole in one club!! Only kidding, everyone is welcome to join the club, just contact Paddy and get your name on the list. Another long weekend coming up with two mixed days again. Saturday we have the AM Bruce Cup a foursomes game report 11.30 for 12 noon start, and Monday we have the Baker trophy battle of the sexes Stableford game, and as it is Anzac Day this will be a 12 noon meet for 12.30 start. Come along to the club and join in the fun. Good golfing.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club
President Julie opened the April meeting held recently. After the National Anthem was sung birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated. The Mid Canterbury Area Representative had sent an update. Donations for the foodbanks were collected. Members were asked to share values or skills their parents taught them. These were many and varied and included wearing gloves when putting on stockings, being kind, turning pillow cases inside out when washing to get the fluff out, don’t believe everything you hear, keep the bench tidy, but most of all wear clean knickers as you might be hit by a bus! The raffle of Easter Eggs was drawn. After morning tea the speaker was Sue Allen. She told us of coming to Ashburton in 2001 and joining Creative Fibres. This group was started in New Zealand in 1969, and there are now over 3000 members, also some overseas. There are 15 geographical areas, Ashburton has a big group. There are many activities including spinning and knitting, lots of traditional crafts, also a magazine, festivals and charity work. In 2005 there was a Festival in Ashburton. Ashburton now has 64 members and meet at the Plains Village, where they have fun, inspiration, learning and friendship. There are also Open Days and demonstrations, school visits. A highlight is the Annual Retreat at Staveley. Sue then showed many beautiful examples of her work including a Shetland wool shawl, tartan rug, and lots of others. Julie thanked Sue for her talk. The Thought for the Month: “We cannot cure the world of sorrow, but we can choose to live in joy”. If you wish to visit our friendly group please phone either Julie 308-4254 or Rae 308-8927, we would love to meet you. Next meeting is 10am on 11 May 2022 at the Hotel Ashburton.

Family ties come together to provide race-day success

It’s been four years between drinks, but Sarah O’Reilly repaid the faith of her Uncle Leo in spades on Easter Monday at Motukarara. In 2018 a young, fresh-faced Sarah stepped into the driving ranks, and one of the first sets of colours she slipped into on race day were those of her Rakaiabased uncle. On Monday, she put them on for just the second time and delivered in fine style, winning on the locally owned Maren Franco. New Zealand’s leading junior driver produced an inch-perfect drive on the mare, showing full confidence in both the horse and the training ability of her uncle, as she sat last before storming home out wide to win untouched. The win followed up a strong second at Methven a week earlier, and the younger O’Reilly was certainly impressed with what she felt in front of her. “She feels really good and is a lovely horse to drive,” she said. “The first time I drove for Leo was on my first day of driving back in the day, so, that was only my second drive for him.” Maren Franco is raced by the Strappers Syndicate – one of New
Zealand’s longest standing racing syndicates – and has turned into quite the producer for the group, made up largely of Mid Cantabrians. From 19 starts the mare has
now won on four occasions, placing on another four as well for nearly $30,000 in stake earnings. She was one of two winners on the day for Leo, who also pro-

stepping up in grade to win, and in the process bring up the fifth driving win of the season for her trainer. From just 11 starters from his stable this season, O’Reilly has come up with four wins and two placings – making him one of the leading strike-rate stables in the country. For his niece, the win on Monday kept her nose in front on the national junior drivers’ premiership. She picked up two winners over the long weekend, including a 13-length demolition on Mabalene for Brent White at Wyndham on Thursday, to see her rise to 22 wins, two ahead of Ben Hope. “Hopefully, it can stay that way. “I look at it sometimes but try not to worry about it too much.” O’Reilly will get the chance to extend that this weekend with drives at Addington tonight, Invercargill on Friday, Geraldine on Sunday and then Ashburton on Monday. Tonight, she’s aboard the Cran and Chrissie Dalgety-trained Sugar Me, on what will be an emotion-charged night for the family after Jim Dalgety passed away this week aged 88.

Willowby fighting for their survival Matt Markham
One of Mid Canterbury’s most successful indoor bowling clubs is fighting for survival, and pulling out all the stops to ensure they don’t have to close their doors. The Willowby Indoor Bowling Club, which was established more than 60 years ago, has faced declining numbers in recent years and discussions have been forced into around facing the reality of potential closure. Indoor Bowls in general across New Zealand has been struggling for a number of years for new players – relying heavily on those who have played for many years, with just a small percentage of players new to the game each season. But Willowby are refusing to lie down without a fight, and are prepared to push as far as they can to see if they can turn things around. Their first challenge was to bring themselves somewhere a little more accessible for potential new members. So, they’ve bid farewell to their historic home of the Willowby Hall and are relocating to town. Starting early next month, they’ll call the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Association stadium on McNally Street home, and they’re planning on opening the doors to see if they can create some interest and snare some new names into the club. “At this stage we intend on looking at holding four nights, over the course of a month,” club member, Graeme Chapman said. Chapman has extra reason to push the idea, with his father one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the club. “We don’t want to turn around in a year or so and wonder if we did enough.
After a successful pilot scheme last year, Girls Got Game is back for Basketball Mid Canterbury these school holidays.

“So, we’re opening the door to see if it can help bolster things up a bit.” Beginning on Tuesday May 3, and running for the month after that each Tuesday night, the sessions will be completely free, and are open to anyone to come along for a couple of hours to return to the sport or pick it up for the first time. Willowby, despite its numbers, still boasts many of the
best players in the district, and those same players will be on hand to help anyone who needs an introduction to the game. “We don’t intend on playing anything seriously, just getting together each Tuesday for a few weeks and having a bit of a rollup and hopefully introducing some people to the sport.” The sessions will begin from 7pm each Tuesday night from May 3.
After a successful introduction to the basketball scene in Mid Canterbury last year, Girls Got Game is back again these school holidays. The programme, which last year ran as a pilot, is focused on introducing new female players, from within the school age bracket, to the game in a fun and relaxed manner. The initial scheme saw more than 70 young local aspirants hit the court for sessions. “That was obviously pre a lot of the issues we’ve had with Covid down here,” Basketball Mid Canterbury’s Mark Douglas said. “We’d love to get to those kind of numbers again, but have to be considerate to the fact of the way things are at the moment – everything in sport is a little bit slow – so we’ll be happy with whatever number we reach.” This year’s event will be run by noted local basketball identity, Tessa Morrison, who was last
week announced as a team member for the new look Mainland Pouakai side who will compete in the National Women’s Basketball League. She’ll be ably assisted by a number of members of the Ashburton College girls’ basketball side. Run on Wednesday, April 27 and Thursday, April 28, Girls Got Game features two sessions across the two days, and caters for three different age groups; Year 3 and 4, Year 5 and 6 and Year 7 and 8. The sessions run for an hour and half each, with registration required through the Basketball Mid Canterbury Facebook page. Douglas said they already had around 40 names registered, but would welcome more right up until the day before the programme begins – adding that with all that’s happening in the women’s basketball realm at the moment that the programme is a great chance to create new stars of the future. “It’s about introducing the sport to a new demographic and showing them that there are pathways for the future, while also having a whole heap of fun.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Nothing makes or breaks an experience like expectation. And assumption, a close cousin of expectation, outright changes your understanding of reality. This adventure goes better when you leave those kin at home. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): A great accomplishment is earned in small gains. The steps you execute today will set you up for one of the more exceptional weekends you’ve had in a long while. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The path before you is being cleared. This isn’t a lucky happening so much as payback for work you’ve done, relationships you’ve cultivated and favours you’ve so freely given in the past. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’ll model yourself after an admired person, aligning in superficial ways at first, and then on deeper levels such as communication style, and attitude about life. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Your current circle of friends, loved ones and supporters help you in every way they know, and yet what you really want and need right now is still conspicuously missing. Time to widen the circle, broaden the search. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): In full knowledge that an opportunity will not be here forever, you’ll soak up every bit of its deliciousness while you have it. You’re a smart cookie who realises a good thing while it’s yours. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There are ways of knowing that are outside the five senses. They seem to be giving you lots of information now (arguably more than you’re finding in the traditional ways), and you can trust it. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You’ve had fickle friends who only come out to play in the sun and leave you wanting and alone in the shadows of dreary weather. This is why, no matter what comes, you show up for your own. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): If what you feel is the downward tug of tethers, you’ll also be presented with the option afforded by garden shears. It’s so easy to build yourself up when there’s nothing holding you down. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Answers once blew in the wind. They may still, but since people are not outside as much, check for answers trending on social media, too. Also, call a mum, and, just to be safe, check everywhere. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): When in doubt, diversify. Make sure you’re not getting your inspiration and influence all from one place, as that’s a short ride to narrow-minded mistakes. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Part of you wants to go back and reopen the old fight, check under the hood of a relationship or rehash a more dramatic bit of history. Yes, there’s something juicy there, and it should be left back there, too!

ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING Proving your identity when buying or selling a house
!
From 1 January 2019, real estate agents are required to verify the identity of their vendors in accordance with Anti-Money Laundering legislation. In some situations, real estate agents will also be required to verify the identity of purchasers. If your real estate agent cannot verify your identity in line with the legislation, they will not be able to act for you. Identity verification can take days and sometimes weeks if a Trust or company is involved, or where parties reside overseas.
The below gives an indication of some of the documents your real estate agent may ask you to present in person or as a certified document as part of this process: Individuals: Passport, NZ Firearms Licence or NZ Drivers Licence with another document such as a bank statement or statement issued by a Government agency. You will also need to provide a document with your residential address (for example, a utility bill).
Trusts: The Trust Deed and, for all trustees and settlors, the information required for individuals as noted above, together with information regarding the Trust’s source of funds or wealth. Additional information may also be required for beneficiaries and appointers.
Companies: Details of the company, together with the information for individuals noted above for every individual with more than a 25% shareholding, all individuals with effective control of the company and all individuals acting on behalf of the company. Information regarding source of funds or wealth may also be required.
Note: The above list is not exhaustive and is indicative only. Your real estate agent will assist you with the specific requirements in relation to your situation. DISCLAIMER: The material and information contained herein is for general information purposes only and is not intended to form professional legal advice. REINZ does not accept liability for any claim or other action that may arise directly or indirectly from the use of or reliance on the material and information provided herein.
