Moving tributes made to our fallen soldiers Daniel Alvey
Locals, returned and current service personnel, girl guides and scouts stood side by side to honour our servicemen and women. About 800 people attended the Ashburton Civic Service yesterday at the cenotaph. The bagpipes echoed throughout the area to begin the service, followed by the Australian and New Zealand national anthems. Mayor Neil Brown was one of the guest speakers at the service. “It is our privilege to honour them here today,” Brown said in his address. Brown’s address was

Roulston said. Along with discussing the fallen, Jack Brown discussed the war in Ukraine in his speech. Addressing the fact that despite Anzac Day remem-

bers those who have fought for us, but it is also about those who still are fighting for us. These addresses were followed by Ashburton RSA president Merv Brenton who highlighted the importance of remembering the soldiers and their stories on Anzac day. “Take time to learn the Anzac stories,” Brenton said. Brenton highlighted an artwork in the RSA which reads “If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you read it in English thank a soldier.” As Brenton concluded his address the Last Post echoed across the grounds, played by Jim Lischner. Local Lyn Hunt said it was her “one day to have a little cry” as she adorned her families’ medals from Australia and New Zealand. Hunt said she was lucky that all her family members made it home from the war. As the bagpipes concluded the service, one important message remains. We will remember them.

Ealing community pay their respects Daniel Alvey As Sons of Gallipoli rang out amongst the trees, the Ealing community gathered to honour our Anzacs. Graham Tarbotton led the morning service, attended by 50 locals and members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, who were staying at the nearby campground. “It was good to see such a turnwreath during the HOTO DANIEL ALVEY out,” Tarbotton said.
Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, historian Jock Phillips, was the guest speaker at the service. He read extracts from diary entries soldiers had written on the battlefield at Gallipoli. Phillips said the diary entries gave people an understanding of what it was like to be in the trenches. “The soldiers were astonished how the newspapers back home had reported the conflict,” Phillips said. To conclude the service, Phillips’ father-in-law and World War Two navy veteran George Harper laid a wreath at the gate to the tree planted to remember Pilot Officer Eric Bayly Withell. Ashburton College head students, Jorja Roulston and Jack Brown, display the wreath they presented at the cenotaph yesterday.

Ashburton College head girl, Jorja Roulston, knew she wanted to express thanks to the people who served in New Zealand’s wars and conflicts overseas. Roulston and head boy, Jack Brown, were invited to speak at the RSA’s Civic Service at the cenotaph yesterday morning. Roulston told an audience of about 800 people she couldn’t “begin to fathom” what our servicemen and women went through, so her speech was one of appreciation. She paid tribute to soldiers, nurses, doctors, navy and air personnel and those present at the ceremony. “I thanked them for the sacrifice they

made so we could enjoy the lives we know today,” she said. Roulston was told by last year’s head girl that speaking at Anzac Day would be one of the highlights of her year. “It was a surreal experience. One of the best things I’ve done as head student,” she said. Brown focused his speech on poppies. “They’re a way of shedding a beacon of light on something tragic and horrible, but they also shed joy,” he said. He counted down the years, months and days since our soldiers landed at Gallipoli and contrasted them with the 60 days since Russian forces invaded Ukraine. The conflicts didn’t occur in the past, they’re happening today he said. Brown read the World War One poem, In Flanders Field, because of its significance. In reading it initially at Tinwald School, he glimpsed his first understanding of Anzac Day.

Goodbye for now L
eaving something you love is never easy. The thought of an imminent return makes it a little less painful though. The weather played its part though and packing up our camp site at Rangi went pretty well. Slow and steady is definitely the way to go. Heading out on Saturday morning and staying the night was a great idea, it meant we didn’t have to rush on the Saturday to get awnings dried and packed up, we still had the Sunday morning up our sleeve as a back-up. That on top of a fair whack at things the weekend prior. Although it was chilly sitting under the side-less awning roof, the night sky at Rangi turned it on for us. The stars out there minus the light pollution in town are spectacular, had there not been a heavy dew on the ground I’m sure we would have had a wee lie down stargaze as well. The camp ground is now closed for the winter and will open again in August for the whitebait season. It will be a few months of waiting with
Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR bated breath for us regulars as we see what happens with the camp grounds in August and beyond. The current caretakers are moving on, and as yet no-one has had word as to what happens next. They say you should try and leave things in a better state than how you found them and I think, thanks to some good maintenance work, Bruce and Gillian can tick that box. We have heard rumours that the camp ground will become a freedom camping spot. In our eyes that would be a shame, and possibly the death knell for us. We can imagine the mess left behind by some and we certainly wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving our caravans set up down there over the summer months without a caretaker looking after things. This is part of the appeal, as
Winners decided Don’t be fooled by the serious looking winners of the Ashburton Guardian’s Easter colouring competition. We know that (from left) Catelyn Wallington, 10, Brian Kononyuk, 9, and Jaxon Dole, 6, were actually super stoked at winning. And it wasn’t easy for the trio because the Guardian got swamped with entries from Mid Canterbury children from far and wide, which probably wasn’t surprising given that chocolate was the prize. Catelyn took out the 10 to 12 years’ section, Brian the seven to nine years, and Jaxon the six years and under. But unlike the other winners, little Jaxon won’t get to enjoy the chocolate taste of success. How come? Jaxon is dairy free, so his dad would get the chocolate instead. Still, Jaxon was “overjoyed’’ at winning, his mother Rebecca said. PHOTO LILI HAYDON
are the facilities; although very basic, they do us just fine. A number of the hut holders I have spoken to would not be happy with the camp grounds without someone looking after them. Hopefully the good fish caught number trend of this season continues in a positive direction and with new innovation like the fish screen playing its part, we will be back to having a camping site full and profitable. But if the ratepayers have to meet a small shortfall until that happens again I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be the only council owned facility not running at a profit. We shall wait and see. Water debt reduced Jonathan Leask A troublesome leak has been long been fixed, and now the large outstanding excess water bill it caused has been cleaned up. The Hinds Reserve Board had incurred excess water usage charges due to a leaky water reticulation system to the tune of $21,200 over the period from May 2014 to January 2016. And it asked the Ashburton District Council to write-off the charges. New pipes fixed the leak in 2016, but not the cost it incurred, which had been left hanging over the cash-strapped reserve board. Council chief executive Hamish Riach said there had been extensive efforts over the years to find and fix the leaks “in a complex tangle of pipes under the ground” that were never successful, leading to the constant
excess water use charges. “It was only when a new line [of pipes] went in and the old line was turned off that the problem was resolved,” Riach said. The solution to the problem was new pipes, but the problem of the excess water charges remained. The council calculated based on an average charge of $350 that the board was eligible for a writeoff of $18,400 from the period of May 2014 to January 2016. As the problem had persisted for so long, councillor Stuart Wilson said the reserve board would be “glad for something rather than nothing because it has been going on for 10 or 12 years”.

Outdoor area funded for Phoenix Preschool Malcolm Hopwood Phoenix Preschool staff are “blown away” at receiving a major grant from Advance Ashburton. Phoenix, which will move into its new relocated preschool by mid-year, has received $27,510
for an outdoor area at the new site on Ashburton College grounds. Centre manager, Angela Ross, is overwhelmed by the grant. “We’re so grateful,” she said. “Instead of staging the development over three or four years, we can now go ahead and have the outdoor area built by the time we relocate in four to six weeks’ time.” The area will include a fort, raised vegetable and flower gardens, fruit trees, a hill mound
with a slide, a climbing wall and wooden fencing around two playhouses. “It’s going to encourage lots of learning opportunities for the children. “It will develop their knowledge of sustainability and how things grow,” Ross said. The preschool, which caters for children from five months to six years, has been at its present site for 37 years and said the new location will offer “a community-based facility that’s well
equipped and resourced for the years to come”. Grants administrator, Naneh Manoa, said Advance Ashburton saw the need to landscape the bare section in front of the new preschool and acknowledged the involvement of parents and family members in working bees and Ashburton College’s agricultural class for moving plants. Advance Ashburton Community Foundation welcomes donations of any amount from groups and individuals.

Elephant in the room: Succession By Pat Deavoll If anything is going to rupture a rural family, it’s farm succession, or handing down to the next generation. So often it’s the elephant in the room, the issue no-one wants to talk about. There are some horror stories about succession-gone-wrong. Take this example: Son leaves school early and works long hours on the family farm for low wages. His expectation? That the farm will eventually be his. In 1992 he buys, with his wife, the neighbouring farm for $500,000 but the purchase is wholly financed by the parents through a mortgage on their own farm. However, the new farm is in the son’s name. The son works hard for no more than labourer’s wages while the capital gains on the property go to the parents. He is unable to build up savings or capital with all of the farm’s revenue going to the parents. A few years later, father and son fall out. The son wants to go it alone, but the father won’t have
New Zealand farmers are particularly bad at succession planning, despite red flags from experts that the process should be started early. PHOTO SUPPLIED a bar of it. So, the son quits. Soon after, his marriage falls to pieces. By the time the case is heard in court eight years later the not-sonew-anymore farm is valued at
$1.8 million. The family agrees that the parents are entitled to a share which the court will determine. The son and estranged daughter-in-law then must agree
Court of Appeal awards them an increased share of 42 per cent. But it’s not all bad news. There are some fantastic examples of succession plans where both the farmer and all the kids are catered for. Take the Williams family in Wairarapa. Three siblings live on the property. One runs the main farm. Another has the homestead and runs a catering and functions business, and the third has a helicopter operation. Or the Wallis family at Minaret Station, Wanaka. They have a dozen helicopters in the air every day. The station has enabled the family to develop the heli-business, build their luxury tourist lodge and acquire a game-packers. A whole range of other business interests has grown from farming due to careful succession planning.

GM debate reignites Using GM, AgResearch has developed ryegrass that has an increased lipid content.
Pat Deavoll As reports on efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions continue to be rolled out, it was the Government’s reaction to another report – the Productivity Commission’s recommendations on genetic engineering – that caught Federated Farmers (Feds) attention. “Farmers are intensely interested in further reducing their world-leading greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions footprint per
kilogram of food produced, but the federation has been saying for several years now that we need new tools to do so,” Feds president and climate change spokesman Andrew Hoggard said. “Genetic modification (GM) is one of those new technologies that offer exciting potential.” William Rolleston, past president of Federated Farmers, Mid Canterbury farmer, and expert on GM answered a few questions for the Ashburton Guardian on the issue. “Methane emissions are generated from the breakdown of cellulose. Replacing cellulose with more lipids (fats) would mean fewer methane emissions for

the energy intake of the animal (cow/sheep). Using GM, AgResearch has developed ryegrass that has an increased lipid content. The GM ryegrass they have developed would mean an overall reduction in methane of up to 23 per cent – doubling our 2030 methane target reduction. “GM, and in particular gene editing, could be used to reduce methane-producing bacteria in the gut of animals, breed lower methane emitting cattle and sheep, and improve productivity to reduce the carbon footprint of our agricultural products. “How would GM affect NZ’s brand? It wouldn’t. The debate on the safety of GM food is long
over. Trillions of meals containing GM food have been eaten around the world without even a headache attributable to GM. The world has moved on from the GM aversion of 20 years ago. The market is far more interested in New Zealand’s effective contribution to climate change and biodiversity (predator control),” he said. “This question of branding was looked at by various government and advice bodies in Australia. The conclusion was that the GM-free status imposed by some state governments discouraged agricultural science investment, created no product premium, and imposed net costs on farmers and the community in the
range of tens to hundreds of millions of dollars. “Given that co-existence between GM and non-GM crops has been demonstrated in Australia and internationally, New Zealand would be better to develop a co-existence model and let farmers decide for themselves rather than a de facto state-controlled strategy of “GM Free” for which there is no justification in science or economics,” Rolleston said.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): To know someone is to feel something about them. The experience of people in the same room accesses feelings better than any way of communicating that requires electricity. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): People want to be convinced, though it will take surprisingly little to push them into certainty. Do the same thing again, but this time like you mean it, and you’ll get favourable results. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You truly believe others would be better off following your advice, but you also realise people are different, and there’s no way to definitively declare one correct answer to suit all. For this reason, you’ll stay out of it. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The hopeful future or idyllic past should be but wee bookends on the main feature of a fantastic present. If the bookends are bigger than the books, it’s not a good sign. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You can afford to say no and be selfish with your time. You normally don’t choose that option, but it just may be the one that brings you the most vitality in the long run. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The other person probably shouldn’t react to your every move. Allay their fear and they’ll feel better in the moment, but you’ll have to do that every time. Or, do nothing and, eventually, they’ll adapt. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Don’t worry about playing small. Actually, there are no small plays, only small-minded or low-energy approaches. You’ll bring your big spirit to everything you do. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Pose a better question and sweeten the day, especially if you are both the querent and the answerer. Try these: What am I most curious about here? How can I bring more levity or clarity to the scene? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): It doesn’t take much to get you riled up about a certain relationship. The challenge is to give and receive compassion regardless of whether it’s what you feel like doing. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Maybe someone chose you, so you never got the sense of pursuit. Relationships are like tag. Changing roles and taking turns is part of it. You may make someone run just so you can feel the chase. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’d rather spend time gaining a skill than trying to enjoy yourself in an environment that doesn’t seem conducive to it. Loved ones may argue that enjoying yourself is a skill! PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): If you choose to see it this way, life can be your party; you make the invite list and the playlist, you call the games, decide when the dancing starts and when the cake is served.

OUR VIEW
Horror crash a needless waste of life H
e was a frail old man, looking weighed down by a heavy winter coat to protect him from a biting cold wind, his dog at his side. Then he left some flowers by the roadside. “Young people and cars,’’ he said to me, shaking his head. “Young people and cars.’’ This was Sunday morning on Queens Drive in Invercargill. We didn’t know each other, but we both had been drawn to the scene where, less than 48 hours earlier, four teenagers had died in a gruesome crash when the Ford ute they were in collided with a concrete truck on a marked 50km/h inner-city road in wet conditions. Three of them were 16 and they all lived within a few blocks of each other in Bluff. The other 17-year-old victim
Daryl Holden lived in Invercargill, not far from the site of the head-on crash. They were sons, mates and siblings, but literally in an instant they were all gone. Life over before it had really started. Now everyone is wondering why and how? Why here? Why four kids? Yes, kids. Why in Invercargill? Police are still investigating the circumstances, which would include poring over horrific video footage of the immediate aftermath of the crash. That footage, posted on social
media but since thankfully removed, showed members of the public, including an off-duty surgeon and nurse, frantically clambering onto the wreckage to try to help.
mander, inspector Mike Bowman, said was “a tragedy”. Oh, that it most surely was, with Bowman revealing that the scene had shaken up all the vast emergency service people
was a horrific scene. But our “ Itemergency services deal with this, unfortunately, day-in, day-out.
“Let’s get this guy out,” the nurse could be heard saying. “They’re the only person that’s gonna live.” Paramedics then rushed to the scene and take over. But it was too late. None of the boys survived in a crash Southland Police area com-
involved. “It was a horrific scene. But our emergency services deal with this, unfortunately, day-in, day-out.” And it’s that bit that really hurts and frustrates, the fact that terrible, tragic accidents of this ilk are not as unusual as
we would think and hope. They are, in fact, happening “day-in, day-out’’, as Southland’s top cop emphasised. That’s the bit all of us should heed. That’s you and I, any teenage drivers you know and family members especially. Because in a second, a wrong decision can cost you your life. It could happen anywhere. It could happen in Ashburton. The loss of those four teens in Invercargill is one of the worst driving tragedies to hit our southern-most city, one of the worst nationally even. Somehow, and some way, we all need to reflect on that and take extra care behind the wheel. Drive to the conditions. Be as safe as you can. No one wants to see a repeat of Invercargill. Ever.

Celtic and Southern on the board, Rakaia thumped Matt Markham
Celtic and Southern put their first wins on the board in the Combined Country Rugby competition over the long weekend, but Rakaia felt the full force of the surprise early competition favourites. Two weeks down in the competition and it’s Saracens who appear to be setting the early pace. They romped in with 11 tries on the Rakaia Domain on Saturday afternoon, while a helpless home side could only watch on as they were torn apart by their visitors. That followed up their round one victory over defending champions, Southern. The final scoreline on Saturday of 71-7 actually belied the Rakaia performance, at least in the first 40 minutes. They looked good at points on attack, and had two certain tries disallowed to the referee’s whistle, which could have changed the momentum of the match. Down 0-28 at the break, things didn’t get any better, and Saracens really opened them up with some free-running rugby, adding another seven tries to the board in the second half while Rakaia could only answer with a try to Harry Ashworth, in the 60th minute. With a win and a defeat next to their name after the first two rounds, it’s hard to place Rakaia at the moment. Saracens look the real deal this season, and even at this early stage look odds on to at least match their quarter-final effort of last year, although at their current rate going further looks high on the cards. Coach Kyle Gray will need to rally his troops this week, but they do get an extra long preparation into their next game, with the bye in the third round seeing them sit out this weekend’s matches. At Celtic, the home side buried the demons of a narrow defeat to Waihora in round one and fought out a tough victory against Glenmark Cheviot, 24-19. A poignant moment commenced proceedings before kick-off – both teams lined up and observed a minute’s silence for long-time Celtic club stalwart Des O’Grady, who passed away on Saturday. When play did commence, it was the visitors who put first points on the board with a penalty, but it wasn’t long before Celtic
Rakaia halfback, Angus Mackenzie looks to clear the ruck during his side’s loss to Saracens on Saturday. replied with a trademark try. Glenmark appeared to be doing a good job of exiting their half, but a couple of strong tackles meant loose ball, quickly snaffled by green defenders, and with a few rapid passes the ball was suddenly on the opposite side of the field, in the hands of Raitube Vasurakuta, who brushed aside the tacklers on a 40-metre run to the line. The North Canterbury visitors added another penalty, but Celtic’s penchant for long-range tries re-appeared ten minutes later, this time with Nixon Brown going 30 metres and fending off two tacklers to find the line in the corner. First-five Cam Butler hadn’t yet found his goal-kicking range, but his tactical kicks were often
finding empty spaces, and he was getting into the task of directing the potent string of strike weapons in the backline. An almost immediate response from Glenmark Cheviot kept things tight and it was they who went into the sheds at halftime with a slender 13-12 lead, after crashing over under the posts following repeated phases right on the line. Celtic wasted no time in the second half getting into their work. Butler was on the end of a long attacking movement within the first 10 minutes, and added the extras as well before Brown secured a brace for the day 10 minutes later. From a scrum inside their own territory, a huge cut-out pass

saw Brown get the few metres of space he required, and he proved too elusive for the three defenders he had to beat. Glenmark Cheviot kept in touch with two penalties of their own, including one with five minutes to play to tighten the match right up, but were unable to break the green machine’s defence and get over the line before the final whistle blew. For Celtic, Shepherd Mhembere was in smashing form early, and then did well as skipper when Ashton McArthur left the fray not long into the match. The lineout was again right on song, with Max Stapleton connecting well with all his jumpers, providing a glut of ball for the potent backline. Glenmark brought a strong scrum to the fight, and the home side had to produce their best work to achieve equal honours in that department. Celtic will hit the road for the long trip out to Culverden this weekend to take on Hurunui, who are yet to get a win on the board after two games. Meanwhile, defending champions Southern picked up five valuable competition points in a high-scoring match against Ohoka on the Hinds Domain. But while the win is on the board, they’ll be more than a little concerned at how easily they let their rivals into the match after taking a healthy lead into the halftime break. Thomas McCormick grabbed a brace in the opening 20 minutes of the match, James Hastings dot-
ted down and Maukie Otukolo also scored two tries as Southern raced out to a 29-12 lead. Two quick tries to Ohoka early in the second half sliced the lead right down, before Callum Burrell found his way over the line to give some breathing room. Another try to Ohoka followed though, and at 36-31 with 10 minutes to play it was still anyone’s game. A Matthew McAtamney penalty gave some breathing room before Jon Dampney, yes you read that right, snuck his way onto the paddock and scored the final try of the match to see his side home 46-31. Southern will be out to keep the ball rolling this week when they head up the road to take on Hornby. Methven, who sat out the weekend with the bye, will trek up to Darfield looking for their second win of the season.
Scoreboard Southern 46 (Thomas
McCormick 2, Maukie Otukolo 2, James Hastings, Callum Burrell, Jon Dampney tries; Matthew McAtamney 4 conv. 1 pen.) Ohoka 31. Celtic 24 (Raitube Vasurakuta, Nixon Brown 2, Cam Butler tries; Butler 2 conv) Glenmark Cheviot 19). Rakaia 7 (Harry Ashworth try; Thomas Whittaker conv.) Saracens 71.

Laking grabs yet another big race win Matt Markham Jason Laking’s season of success just keeps on giving. The Ashburton-based hoop picked up his third black-type success of the season on Saturday when he combined with Prise De Fer to win the Group Three Canterbury Gold Cup at Riccarton. And again, success came in the famous tangerine and blue colours of Te Akau, but this time it was trainer Mark Walker, not Jamie Richards, who has departed for Singapore. Laking has picked up black type wins for the stable this season aboard Noverre in the War Decree Stakes, and a Group One on Belle En Rouge in the New Zealand Oaks earlier in the year. And Walker was full of praise for both the ride on Saturday on Prise De Fer, and for Laking in general. “It was a lovely ride by Jason Laking, who continues to serve the stable very well when called upon,” Walker said.
“He presented the horse at the right time, and it was a confident display.” It’s been a big season for Laking in the saddle, with 18 winners from 226 rides which sees him on track to secure the most wins in a season he’s managed in more than a decade. His best ever is 46 winners, which he set in the 2000 and 2001 season when riding as an apprentice. With three months in the season remaining, he can already tick off one new personal record, with this season’s stake earnings of more than $814,000, a career-best season haul for the talented jockey. As well as his 18 victories, Laking has also picked up 53 minor placings – one of which came on Saturday when Lord Darci ran a bold second for Ashburton trainers Bevan and Robyn Wilson earlier on the card. Laking’s steer on Prise De Fer was inch perfect. He allowed the gelding to find his feet early and punched through into a prominent spot on the home turn before cruising down to the line to win with a bit of authority.

Morrison continues to ride crest of a wave Matt Markham As he gets ready to call Ashburton home once again, John Morrison continued to ride the crest of a wave over the course of the long weekend’s racing action. The former Ashburton College student has been based at West Melton for the past few years, where he’s trained a small team and made a base for himself for his driving
engagements around the South Island. But within the next few weeks, Morrison hopes to be back home in Ashburton, with a move to the Ashburton Racecourse locked and loaded for his own team of horses. It’s a significant boost again to the local training ranks, with a number of other newcomers to the district set to be confirmed over the coming months. But while he gets all his ducks in a row for the shift, Morrison hasn’t taken the foot off the accelerator on the track, with another successful long weekend completed – including a double at Orari on Sunday.
His long weekend started on Thursday when he reined Tiger Taylor to success at Addington, and then he picked up another the next day at Invercargill with Brigadier’s Son. With a standout book of drives at the final grass track meeting of the first stage of John Morrison the new season on Sunday, Morrison was expected to salute at Geraldine, and did so with Franco Marek and Champagneandwine. Franco Marek looks every bit a good horse having won all three of his starts
this campaign for trainer Greg Manson. The big pacer bobbled away at the start on Sunday, but recovered and proved too classy for his rivals in the run to the line. Champagneandwine faced a massive drop back in grade and stepped up and dished out a seven-and-a-half length victory. The winning weekend took Morrison to 25 wins for the term – a tally which has him sixth on the national drivers’ premiership in what is his first season out of the junior driving ranks.

Cyclists shine at Nationals Matt Markham The famous black-and-orange of the Tinwald Cycling Club was to the fore at the New Zealand Age Group Road Nationals in Hokitika on Sunday, with five podium finishes across the competitors. A seven riders-strong contingent trekked over the Southern
Alps to compete at the event with good success, including for Monique Brake, who picked up a gold and a silver in her divisions. Brake won the time trial, and then backed that up with a silver medal in the road race to cap a successful weekend. Merv Grewar was also on the podium twice, claiming the bronze medal in both the time trial and the road race. Steve Hands produced a confident ride in the road race in his
category to claim the silver medal, rounding off Tinwald’s medal winning efforts. Other notable performances from the weekend included Kyle Gray picking up fifth in the road race, Cole Harris finishing 10th in his road race and Simon White 17th in his. Zoe Spillane, who races a lot at the Tinwald Cycling Club but is based in Timaru, was also in on the action, finishing third in her road race and fourth in the time trial.
One up, one down for Mid Canterbury on the turfs of Christchurch on the long weekend. The Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s side advanced their way up the standings in Division One action with a good win over University on Saturday, but that elusive first victory still awaits the women’s team, who had to settle for second placing again. At Marist Park, the women’s side arrived missing eight of their regular players due to unavailability or injury, and up against a strong University side who had been strong in the early weeks of the competition it was always going to be tough. Despite the hindrances, the Mid Canterbury ladies went about their work in the first quarter well and kept the score-line blank. It took until late in the second for University to break through the stoic Mid Canterbury de-

fence, but down just 0-1 at the break the visitors were well in the hunt. University grabbed another two goals in the second, and it looked as though countless efforts from the Mid Canterbury attack were going to remain fruitless for the match until Sam Dalziel stepped up and put one past the keeper
late in the game to see Mid Canterbury go down a respectable 1-3 to a very good side. Immediately after that match, over at Nga Puna Wai the Mid Canterbury men were out to continue their good form, despite still suffering from the effects of Covid within the team environment.
Reserves win
With the Senior side out for the weekend, the Mid Canterbury United Reserves took the spotlight, and they delivered a telling performance to keep their run of form going, with a 4-2 win over Christchurch United. It wasn’t quite as happy of a hunting day for the Methven Division One side, though, who felt the full force of Cashmere Technical, falling to a heavy defeat 10-0.

Also, up against University, Mid Canterbury let them take control of the match early, but a breakaway in play saw the ball find its way to Scott Marshall at the other end of the turf, and he reverse-sticked the ball into the goal to give Mid Canterbury a lead. They kept that advantage until the second half began, and it wasn’t until late in the third quarter that Sam Bennett, off the back of a good string of play from Mid Canterbury, slammed one past the goalie to extend that lead to 2-0. University bounced back with a goal of their own to make things a little nervy for the Mid Canterbury side. They had a chance to level it up as well, but only a desperate stick save from Hamish O’Reilly denied them. Mid Canterbury held on for the win 2-1, and with three wins from their four matches they are right in the hunt in the early stages of the season. This week they face one of their tougher tests in the very good Southern side.
Hampstead are making an early play on the Mid Canterbury Senior B competition, picking up their second win from the first two rounds of play on the weekend, beating Southern 33-19. Allenton also remain undefeated from two games, having come out on top in a close battle with Rakaia 26-22. Mt Somers continued their good form with a 35-8 win over Collegiate and Methven beat Celtic on Thursday night 26-7.
Hockey set to begin Women’s Division 2 will kickstart the Mid Canterbury hockey season this week with the first matches of the season. Tinwald and Wakanui will officially get the season under way with the opening game of the night at 6.15pm on the NBS Hockey Turf, before Hampstead and Methven play the later game at 7.30pm. Men’s Division Two action will be played on Sunday with the Division One matches for women and men held on Monday and Tuesday nights respectively.
