Staying red ‘a sensible move’ Ashburton District councillor and pharmacy owner Carolyn Cameron says staying in the red traffic light Covid-19 setting is sensible. That was her reaction after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told the nation that we’re not ready to move to an orange traffic light setting, with many parts of the country still facing a surge in Covid-19 cases. “Probably the right thing to do,’’ Cameron said after yesterday’s announcement. “The Government has the best advice.’’ Cameron said that staying at red was the most sensible option, given that the Canterbury region was still at its peak for case numbers, and hospitalisations were still high. In Canterbury, there were 1664 new cases yesterday, and 49 people in hospital. The traffic light system would be reviewed on April 14, just prior to Easter. Despite no traffic light change, the My Vaccine Pass was no longer required for most venues. Cameron also said she had seen the number of people getting boosted drop significantly. “Well dropped, like single digits.” She encouraged people to still get boosted, despite it no long being required. “Getting boosted is still important,’’ she said. The Canterbury District Health Board area was leading the vaccine charge, with 99.7 per cent having received one dose, 98.7 per cent two, with 75.9 per cent boosted.

Green light for technicians Ashburton business relieved at worker news Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton’s New Zealand Sock Company has finally received Government approval to employ three skilled hosiery technicians from Pakistan. The Ashburton company has been informed by an immigration adviser that their border exemption request to bring in top staff from overseas had received the go ahead. The application followed two years of discussion with Government officials and a breakthrough last Christmas, when

Immigration New Zealand acknowledged there were no qualified technicians available in this country. If everything goes smoothly, the hosiery technicians could be in Ashburton in about six weeks. “We’re very excited, but we shouldn’t have had to go through this harassment,” New Zealand Sock Company manager director, Euan Sparrow, said. “We received agreement before Christmas, but it’s taken until this time. “Finally, the Government is opening its borders but it’s far too late.’’ That frustration was echoed by the family firm’s sales executive, Paul Sparrow. “In all our discussions with Immigration New Zealand we

never got a clear-cut answer,” he said. As a result, the company lost sales opportunities because it didn’t have the staff capacity to fulfil orders. “Two offshore companies want to buy our socks, but we’ve had to defer them. Often, we only get one chance,” he said. When the technicians finally arrive, the sock company faces more staffing issues. It employs three other skilled Pakistani technicians, who haven’t seen their families back home for more than two years. “We’ve approved extended leave and they may have to go before the other technicians arrive,” Euan Sparrow said. “Coping without them will be extremely difficult but we’ll survive.”

Because of its previous experience with Immigration New Zealand, the sock company was continuing to look at relocating part of its production offshore. “We’ve had trial socks made in Portugal for the European market,” Euan Sparrow said. “We’ve yet to make a decision but we don’t want to lose orders again.” But when the skilled technicians finally arrive the Sparrow family will let out a collective sigh of relief. “It’s taken too long but, the ironic thing is, when they start work, we can look at taking on additional finishing staff,” Euan Sparrow said. “That benefits employment in Mid Canterbury.”

Simon O’Neill wins the Grammy Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton’s international tenor is thrilled to receive his first Grammy award. Simon O’Neill has been awarded the Grammy for his role as Dr Marianus in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony – the symphony of a thousand – with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. The recording, featuring 345 musicians in all, was made at Walt Disney Concert Hall immediately prior to the pandemic in 2019. The album, nominated for Best Choral Performance and Best Engineering, Classical, was announced in Las Vegas over the weekend. When interviewed by the Ashburton Guardian earlier this year, O’Neill said he was “really thrilled and proud to be part of the recording. It was great waking up to the news when the Grammy nominations were announced”, he said. “The Mahler Symphony is massive and I was honoured to be part of the amazing soundscape that was captured by Deutsche Grammophon.” O’Neill, who turned 50 last December, is considered New Zealand’s most internationally recognised opera singer since Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Sir Donald McIntyre. He’s described by the international press as “the best heroic Wagnerian tenor to emerge over the last decade”. In being awarded the Grammy, O’Neill joins such illustrious classical musicians as Leonard Bernstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Andre Previn and Michael Tilson Thomas. Other popular recipients are Beyonce, Adele, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen and

Less pain at the pump

Waitomo Fuels hopes to head Ashburton’s way

Cheaper vibes: Waikato-based Waitomo Fuels is hoping for council approval to open a petrol station in the pictured rail yards area on West Street. Waitomo Fuels is known for its cheaper fuel offerings.

PHOTO DANIEL ALVEY

Daniel Alvey Cheaper fuel appears to be on its way for Ashburton motorists. Waitomo Fuels has lodged a consent application with the Ashburton District Council and its arrival, pending approval, would add to the cheaper suppliers in the town, alongside Nelson Petroleum Distributors (NPD).

Waitomo’s site location is on West Street in the rail yards next to the Ashburton Domain, with the land to be leased off KiwiRail. “It adds another dimension to the Ashburton fuel prices,” said AA Canterbury Westland chairman John Skevington, adding that more competition in the market was never a bad thing. Waitomo Fuels’ move followed the recent news of an expected late May opening for Ashburton’s second NPD petrol station, with the Tinwald location adding to the company’s self-serve site on JB Cullen Drive. And last

year, NPD also opened up a fuel station in Rakaia. Waitomo’s arrival could only be good news for consumers because it already offered the cheapest fuel in Christchurch at $2.49 a litre of unleaded 91 petrol. A spokesperson for the Waikato-based fuel business said the

Ashburton station would be “one of many coming to the South Island”. The spokesperson added that there would be more news in a few weeks once the submission had been approved. While the council consent process was only in its infancy, Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport

Agency had already approved the location. The only requirement being that the fuel station operated a one-way system so to not interrupt traffic on what has always been a busy street. The station would feature two car pumps and one truck pump and the three main fuel grades, being 91, 95, and diesel. The council was taking submissions on the proposal, which close on April 26. “We are excited about coming to the region,” the Waitomo spokesperson said.

Making a meal of Covid Lili Haydon Concerned about the lack of patronage at local eating establishments, Kirsten Diack has taken matters into her own hands. Diack has created an Ashburton Dining Club Facebook page to encourage more locals to get out and support hospitality businesses in tough Covid-19 times. “We know they have been having a hard time,” Diack said. With the Retro Kitchen café closing in Burnett Street last month, Diack didn’t want to stand by as more restaurants shut their doors for good. Within two weeks, the page had 400 followers, and early interest is such that restaurants were starting to offer discounts to get club patrons in their doors. Diack has already organised special deals for club members who dine at Armadillo’s throughout April. The dining club had their first meal last week at the Fine Lion, which involved nine club member bookings, each consisting of three or more diners. The Dog House day care and kennel service, which Diack owns, sponsored the club’s first meal night, with Olivia Carter probably enjoying it the most. She was the lucky draw winner to receive the prize of the cost of her meal back. Fine Lion owner, Matt Fine, said a lot of the club members attending hadn’t dined at the restaurant before. “It worked really well.” Diack hopes the dining club can organise at least one meal out weekly and that businesses come on board and sponsor someone’s meal. “If you can book out a restaurant, that will really boost them.” Next up on her menu is an all-youcan-eat curry night, and interest to be part of the club offerings has already been expressed by restaurants in Methven.

Methven Cemetery

Part of the Methven Cemetery is closed for two weeks as contractors undertake groundworks for a new driveway. An area on the eastern side of the cemetery has been under development since high winds felled and damaged trees last September. Several rows of trees were removed and a development plan was drawn up to develop and extend the cemetery. The developments include a new driveway, reinstatement of the walking track, additional plantings, and more burial space, which will progress as funding allows.

BASE Youth Centre gets a boost “We can stay open” is the reaction from the co-ordinator of Ashburton’s Base Youth Centre. The centre has received $10,000 from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury for operational expenses and co-ordinator, Jenny Rae, is ecstatic at receiving the money which pays for her position and a support worker. The youth centre, which started 14 years ago as a youth café, has changed with the demand to become a youth drop-in and activities centre. It’s grown over the years to include support programmes, care campaigns and recently expanded into support services including Rainbow Youth Group, counselling support and working in collaboration with HYPE Youth Health Centre to establish the Youth Sexual Health Clinic. “BASE is the only after school facility in Ashburton for young people to attend,” Rae said. “It’s through the generosity of organisations such as the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury that we’re able to continue to provide a safe environment for activities which allow our young people to try new opportunities and gain new skills.” This includes art and craft, cooking and self-esteem classes, homework help, life skills and a caring chat with the youth centre team. In its final grants for the 2021-2022 financial year, the community trust also gave $5000 to Mid Canterbury Hockey towards a new electronic scoreboard and $10,000 to Presbyterian Support Upper South Island for operating costs.

Bradley Carson-Price and Nate Wilson, two after school regulars, will benefit from the ongoing funding the BASE Youth Centre has received.

ince coming into Government, Labour has worked hard to support low and middle income Kiwis. This week, we’re taking the next step, with a suite of changes that came into force on Friday, April 1 that will see the majority of New Zealand families better off. The rising cost of living, driven by global inflation and the war in Ukraine, is making things tough for many – including people here in the Ashburton District. There’s no easy fix, but we’re delivering a range of measures to ease the pressure, including the April 1 changes. Our improvements to Working for Families alone will see around 60 per cent of Kiwi families better off by an average of $20 per week. Families will also benefit from increases to the family tax credit and Best Start, as well as expanded Childcare Assistance. It’s not just families who’ll see a boost. Both the Student Allowance and Student Loan Living Costs are increasing by $25, while main benefits are increasing by up to $35 a week. As of April 1, the minimum wage increases to $21.20. Around 8 per cent

of workers in Canterbury are on the minimum wage and after this increase full-time workers will be earning an additional $48 per week, or almost $2500 a year. Seniors will also benefit, with single people on superannuation getting a boost of $52 a fortnight and couples receiving $80 extra. From May 1, the Winter Energy Payment will also start again, to help more than a million people with heating bills. We’ve taken action to provide relief from the petrol price spikes caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and it’s awesome to hear this is already making a difference. There’s no silver bullet for current cost pressures, but these measures will provide some relief. They build on actions we’ve taken since 2017 to ensure Kiwi families have more in their pocket to get ahead, such as the family tax credit, free school lunches, and cheaper doctors’ fees. We’re committed to securing a recovery from Covid that leaves no-one behind. Supporting households with the cost of living is just one way we’re making that a reality. Jo Luxton is a Labour MP. aybe it’s because it’s Monday and I’m feeling a bit blah after a weekend that went way too fast or perhaps, I’m just getting a bit soft in my old age. When I first started in radio back in the early 90s this would never have happened. Well, for starters I would never have been writing a weekly column and mentioning the Guardian on the radio was a no-no. We were competing for the advertising dollar fiercely with an almost enemy mentality. I’m very glad we have moved past that, and I guess with the many options for advertisers these days is nice we are both pushing the LOCAL option barrow together, in a roundabout sort of way. I want to give Daryl and the team at the Guardian a big wrap in this column. I thought Saturday’s paper was the best I’d read in a long time. Matt Markham’s insight to the nerves that Lynda Topp was feeling moments before her and Jool’s heart-wrenching cancer story hit the telly and their gratitude for all the messages and heartfelt best wishes was a great read. Daryl’s story about Taylor Doyle’s surgery success was insightful and heart-warming. Watching the video of her deep breathing without pain post-surgery is just awesome. I read the Rushtons’ story about the traumatic death of their gorgeous daughter at 4.15am yesterday morning and by the end of it had tears rolling down my cheeks. Thank you, Claire and Gerard, for being so brave and sharing the story. Then to round out the weekend read an excellent profile called Our Heroes and that is exactly what they are, our local firefighters around the district. These brave men and women from all corners of our region deserves every scrap of praise they receive. They give up so much of their time to help others and must encounter some horren-

It’s been quite a mission . . . By Pat Deavoll

Chris Allen and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

Chris Allen has nothing but praise for the way Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) got his farm back on its feet after it was decimated by the floods that hit Mid Canterbury in May last year. MPI set the criteria as to what they would fund and these had to be uninsurable (not uninsured) which is “pretty much things around the land to restore it back to its productive best,” Allen said. “At the time of the flood the Prime Minister came down and there was $4m offered and this was all administered by MPI. “A shout out to MPI,” he said. “Sometimes government organisations can hinder, but this time they got it about right.” Allen’s farm suffered massive damage during the floods, losing 22 fences, paddocks covered in sediment, trees, and debris, a huge washout down the middle of the farm, and all but losing his irrigation pond. “We had to get the pond fixed before the irrigation season and thank goodness this happened by December 1,” Allen said. “But we took out 15,000 tonnes of debris that had been deposited in the pond and spread this over five hectares of our land. It was nearly three-quarters of a metre deep in the pond. It was a three-week job

involving three dump trucks and a digger. “Then we had to repair all the infrastructure around the pond. “As it turned out we were up and running for the irrigation season, but it has been such a wet summer we have hardly needed it.” Allen said there was a “huge amount” of debris spread across the farm that had to be got rid of. He credits volunteers for all the work they did to remedy this. Farmy Army, Lincoln College students, tramping clubs, and the local Lions Club all came out to help, he said. “The Lions Club did a huge amount of work restoring fences, hours, and hours. There were four guys coming out two days a week for five weeks working on the fences. I had 22 fences destroyed and now 17 of them are back in action.” “And all those doing the surveys to make sure the right information was being gathered – all that takes a lot of organising,” Allen said. “For us, we are pretty happy to be where we are and fortunate that a lot of the stars aligned. “It has been quite a mission, but if someone said in May last year that everything would be pretty much finished by the end of the financial year I would have said, “yeah, right!”

Twenty-year battle with killer mite, but still no silver bullet Pat Deavoll The parasitic mite varroa destructor has been a severe threat to New Zealand’s honeybees ever since it appeared on our shores 20 years ago. Affected bees have not been able to survive without human intervention and effective treatment for varroa is essential for protecting our most productive pollinators. In principle, the treatments were the same as they were 20 years ago, said local honey buyer John Hartnell. “We have standard treatments and organic options, with the beekeeper making the decision which options they choose for their business. There are two different chemical families and beekeepers alternate the treatment on a rolling basis to manage the potential for chemical resistance by the varroa mite, just as we do for sheep and beef etc. when treating worms and parasites. The average beekeeper would spend $50,000 a year on these treatments, said Peter Bell of

to varroa mites than any other cause. Agcarm chief executive Mark Ross said, “Varroa wiped out wild bee colonies as it spread throughout the country, so it’s essential that beekeepers remain highly vigilant, check for its presence and treat hives with miticides – at

Rather, plastic strips are inserted into hives. “The bees walk on the strips, get the material into their body and it kills the mites,” Ross said. MPI has commissioned Manaaki Whenua-Landcare Research to conduct a colony loss survey annually since 2015, to help it monitor losses over time and support work to improve bee health. The 2021 winter survey, which involved nearly half of New Zealand’s beekeepers, found the overall loss rate to be 13.6 per cent, or approximately 109,800 colonies, up 2.3 per cent on 2020 levels. In a nutshell . . . the loss rate is 62 per cent higher than the loss rate for 2015, the first year of the survey. “Varroa is a long-term problem that costs the industry around $15 million a year in direct and indirect expenditure,” Hartnell said. “There has been a considerable investment domestically and internationally in research over the years but there has been no breakthrough or silver bullet found to date, it is a work in progress.”

Green is a 34 per cent share milker on the 270ha Dairy Holdings Ltd Hinds property milking 1060 cows. He won $10,000 in prizes plus three merit awards. The 34-year-old holds a Degree in Agriculture from Harper Adams University and enjoys farming as it gives him the opportunity to work outdoors and with livestock. “I’m excited about the capital entry changes in Fonterra, as a strong co-op is key to a successful New Zealand dairy future,” he said. Future farming goals include working towards farm ownership in seven years and building a family home with his partner Sally. The winner of the 2022 Canterbury/ North Otago Dairy Manager of the Year category is proud to work in the dairy industry and loves what he does every day. Jaspal Singh won $6000 in prizes plus three merit awards and is farm manager on Mark and Carmen Hurst’s 220ha, 800-cow property at Waimate. The second-time entrant said the awards programme had challenged him. “I’ve learnt about my strengths and weaknesses. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): One quest worthy of you is to become masterful at reading the room. Even the most familiar rooms have more to offer once you tune into their particular frequency and adjust your own accordingly. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The action won’t be controlled. This scene has a force too strong for one person to thwart or even steer, but it can be influenced, nudged along in a way that will make a difference. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll use different words and make updates to the way you present yourself both in person and in the digital realm. Your fresh style will bring social and professional opportunity. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Disappointment isn’t an appointment worth keeping. The way to avoid it is to set your expectations well. This takes both awareness and research. Who are you dealing with? What patterns exist already? LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Belief is the code that programmes the mind. Once a thing is believed, the perceived world automatically organises around that belief, which becomes like sheet music that the world plays its song to. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The cool lettering on an inspiring picture wants to be the truth, but the truth is rarely glamorous. The truth is more likely to be uncomfortably blurted out, its grittiness taking nothing from its power. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): People flock to the ocean, pay more to live near it, travel to see it. Its enormity, ceaseless movement and danger make it mesmerising. Romantic love mesmerises for the same reasons. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It’s easier to be philosophical about a thing when you’re the one in control of the decisions around it. When decisions are made by others that affect your world, it’s action, not philosophy, that puts things right. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Whether or not you land a certain job will depend partly on luck and other circumstances, but keeping it or leveraging it into something even better will be contingent on what you give to the work. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): People who say they need a fast answer or the offer goes away are using scarcity tactics. If you already know what you want, you don’t have to be squeezed for the deal to close. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): People are drawn together out of mutual need, and they typically drift apart when those needs either aren’t met or are no longer needs. Lasting relationships depend on periodic updates and renewals. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Socialising is a dance you’re good at, as you easily tune into other people’s rhythms. Because of this, you’ll be a sought-after partner.

Cup loss – is it such a big deal?

S

o, they’re sailing away all right, but not in the patriotic feel-good way of the 1987 campaign theme song of that very name – because this time they’ve taken our America’s Cup with them. That’s Team New Zealand, of course. Sorry, Emirates Team New Zealand, who have polarised Kiwis everywhere with their decision to defend the Auld Mug in Barcelona, not Auckland Was it a surprise? Not really. Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton had flagged long ago that an offshore defence was quite likely for what were pure financial reasons. Confirmation of the bold move to host the regatta for world sports’ oldest trophy back in Europe in 2024 simply had an inevitability about it. And Dalton, to be fair, had rightly sought the most lucrative deal

Daryl Holden he could find. He knew that was necessary to enable his team to stage a successful campaign against significantly better-funded opponents, even if that meant conceding home water and wind advantage his crew knew so well in Auckland. The Government gave it what they said was their best shot at keeping the cup defence in Auckland, offering $99 million, which was reportedly made up of $31 million in cash and the rest in kind. But Dalton had done his sums. Barcelona, it’s understood, promised $124 million. No contest, in other words. All

that underlines what we’ve all probably known for years in that the America’s Cup is mostly about business and not true sport as we know it, despite a tradition dating back to 1851.

ca’s Cup is that it has never really connected with the national psyche in the way the All Blacks, Kiwis league team, Black Caps and the Silver Ferns etcetera represent their codes and their fans.

just that the America’s Cup has often “ It’s come down to a contest between superwealthy billionaires recruiting the best sailors and teams money can buy.

I have no doubts that the Spanish hot spot will do a fine job as New Zealand’s defacto host and, really, is it a big deal? It’s not unusual for New Zealand sports teams to defend world titles abroad. Think the All Blacks, who won in London in 2015 after winning at home four years earlier. The problem with the Ameri-

And, please, that’s taking nothing away from the sailing excellence of Team NZ’s Peter Burling, Blair Tuke and co. It’s just that the America’s Cup, especially in the past four decades since New Zealand’s been involved, has often come down to a contest between super-wealthy billionaires recruiting the best

sailors and teams money can buy. With all that sorted, Dalton and his team will naturally go with our blessings because we all hope they win. Perhaps, too, there’s a silver lining to not seeing them do it in Auckland. Perhaps the Government could pour those promised America’s Cup millions into community sports, as an example. Or, better still, use it to reduce child poverty, improving our mess of our healthcare sector or just breathing life (and cold hard cash) into our hospitality and once mammoth tourism industry that’s been decimated by Covid 19 for two years. Let’s hope the Government does the right thing because the America’s Cup is, quite sadly, now Spain’s cup, and probably out of our reach forever. We don’t want tourists, and our tourism towns, to follow that same path.

A new role with Swimming New Zealand has led to Roly Crichton and Sophie Pascoe ending their coach and athlete partnership.

Change in direction sees Pascoe, Crichton split Matt Markham

Donalda supreme on the greens Allenton’s Donalda Watson ensured Mid Canterbury was left off the call sheet at Bowls Canterbury’s Champion of Champions Finals Day on Saturday. On the Morrison Avenue Bowling Green in Christchurch, Watson became the district’s latest champion of champions when she took out the Women’s Under 5 singles, for players who have been playing for five years or less. She began her morning with a semi-final against Rangiora’s Trina Fearnley, and made reasonably light work of the challenge to win 21-12, which set up a final against Halswell’s Sonya Butler later in the day. Like the first match of the day, Watson was always in control and played superb bowls to win and claim her first Canterbury title with a 21-14 victory, adding another Allenton Bowling Club victory to their impressive list of successes over the year. The time of one of New Zealand’s most successful coach-athlete combinations has come to an end. A shift into a role with Swimming New Zealand as performance consultant has meant that former Ashburton man, Roly Crichton has had to end his tenure as the man behind Dame Sophie Pasoce – our most decorated Paralympian. Pascoe acknowledged the change in circumstances on social media over the weekend, highlighting the role Crichton had played in her career after discovering her talent at a young age. “Roly discovered my talent from the side of the pool when I was eight years old,” Pascoe posted. “He pulled my Mum and I aside after a race and told me I had what it takes to represent New Zealand.

“From that day on to my fourth Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Roly has been my coach.” Their 20-year combination as a coach and an athlete has seen Pascoe win 19 Paralympic medals, including 11 golds. Crichton wasn’t able to be in Tokyo alongside his star due to health issues, but Pascoe said that their ride had been a great one. “Roly and I are both so proud of what we have achieved together the past 20 years in and out of the pool. “I want to thank you, Roly, that you took a chance on me when I was so young, you guided and believed in me, you have pushed me to limits I thought I wouldn’t reach, and we have shared so many incredible memories and success together.” Pascoe now has her attention firmly set on the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, but instead of having her coach their next to the pool, he’ll be sitting in the stands in a different role. But she knows the support will be just the same.

Cranbourne crushes them Matt Markham The future is looking bright for Mid Canterbury’s best pacer, Cranbourne. With lofty targets ahead for the big son of Sir Lincoln, he stepped up and delivered a warning to his future rivals in some of New Zealand’s best races with a dominant performance to win the Group Three Free-ForAll at Addington on Friday night for trainer Brent White and driver Matty Williamson. The win was a real boost to the stocks of the big pacer, as he now looks down the barrel of another black type race this week before trekking to the North Island for two major Group One assignments. And while he’s clearly revelling in his stable star’s run of luck at the moment, White isn’t getting too far ahead of himself. “You don’t want to get too carried away, and keep your feet on the ground, but it is pleasing with the way he is going, and we have just got to take it one race at a time with him and enjoy the ride,” White said after Friday’s performance.

Pushed out of the gate early by Wiliamson, Cranbourne found the markers and dictated the race to his own liking from thereon, really pushing his rivals down the back straight the last time to take a little sting out of them. He was able to withhold the challenge of Alta Wiseguy up the straight to win comfortably – his third successive victory, maintaining an unbeaten record with Williamson in the sulky. “I am over the moon with him,” White said. “He is getting better with the hard racing against these better horses. He is getting a bit harder himself and learning the ropes.” Cranbourne will now head to the Superstar Championships this weekend before heading to the North Island for a campaign – an exciting moment for White, and the horse’s owners, Ashburton’s Ross McCutcheon and Neale Pierce along with Temuka’s Barry Phillips and Ross Smith. He wasn’t the only local to salute on Friday night with the Gerard O’Reilly-trained and driven Bettor Be Sharp registering an impressive victory early on in the night. The Bettor’s Delight gelding worked hard early to find the front and then never let up, leaving his rivals gasping as he cleared away to win comforta- Winning smiles, Ross McCutcheon, Neale Pierce and Barry Phillips after Cranbourne’s win on Friday night. bly. Combined Schools 1st XV withdraws from competition Matt Markham The Mid Canterbury Combined Schools 1st XV has officially withdrawn from this year’s Miles Toyota Cup. After the team was advised of the decision late last week, team management yesterday announced to sponsors and supporters their decision not to field a team in 2022 with the unavailability of capable kids to play in such a demanding and physical competition. It’s a blow for the group of ded-

icated people behind the scenes who have worked very hard to build an environment to showcase the rugby playing talent of local secondary school students, but one they were actually prepared for. “We knew years ago that this year was going to be a battle to field a team,” spokesman, Brett Hobbs said in the statement. “All involved have tried our hardest to provide the resources to compete with the big schools. “This decision was made because of a lack of enthusiasm or resources.” The Combined side played its first pre-season game of the year last week against Dunsandel Southbridge Combined U18,

and were victorious – but the evidence was there that stepping up to take on the powerhouse schools around the Canterbury catchment was going to be a tough call. In that particular match they fielded more than half a dozen under 16 players, but they are unable to compete in the Miles Toyota competition as it’s an under 18 grade. “We felt it would be irresponsible to try and field a team that was too young, and with the affect that Covid has had on sport there would be too much pressure on kids to return without knowing the effect this could have on them long term. “In our view to compete we re-

quired a capable, available squad of at least 35. “One of the reasons we have failed to field a team is that we are a victim of our district’s success. “There are possibly 18-20 boys that have left school and taken up various roles working, with most doing good, quality apprenticeships.” Also aiding in the decision was that next year the competition will be revamped, and that may open the doorway for the smaller schools within the competition to be in a more competitive and fairer environment. It will have major benefits for the local club rugby scene too. The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union have been made aware of

Numbers game for the girls In the same announcement around the Combined Schools 1st XV it was also revealed that the race is on to get enough players together to form a combined girls’ 1st XV to compete this year. The team competes in the annual South Canterbury competition and has done well over recent years with a number of players heading on to play premier rugby in Christchurch and here in Mid Canterbury. Trainings thus far for this season have yielded around 13 players coming together with the struggle on to fill the squad enough to be able to field a team. “The struggle for numbers all around is impacted by Covid and not having the ability to have meetings at school to try and get some momentum within sport – which is a huge problem for participation.” While that’s a tough situation to be in, there is confidence that both schools will be able to field an Under 15 boys side to compete this season, with both sides hopeful of heading to the South Island Secondary Schools event in Waimea later in the year.

There’ll be no trytime for the Combined Schools’ side this season.

the situation with many, if not all players, sliding across to play at the club level with strong age group sides in local competitions likely. While they won’t be competing in this year’s competition, the side are still planning to undertake a number of pre-season tournaments and fixtures, including a trip to Hanmer to play against Waimea, Selwyn and Roncalli Combined school sides, and there’s the annual threeday pre-season tournament in Oamaru after Easter as well. Both Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College will still form individual 1st XV sides to compete in various matches and tournaments during the year.

Bronze medal headlines great week at Maadi Cup Matt Markham Talk about finishing the week off in style. Ashburton College made the final day of this year’s Maadi Cup on Lake Ruataniwha a memorable one as they claimed a bronze medal on the final morning of the competition. The Under 16 Coxed Quad sculls crew of Isabel Wall, Sophie Gibson, Sienna Skilling, Honor Bradford and Lily Davidson produced a magic race in the A Final of the event on Saturday morning to claim third placing – an impressive effort given they had to work their way through the repechages in order to just get a shot at making it into the main final of the division. The team tore their way down the course finishing in a time of seven minutes and 41 seconds, just three second behind the second-placed Cashmere crew, with Cambridge High School 10 seconds ahead claiming the win. It was just one part of an encouraging 24 hours for the AshColl squad, who made sure they were all around the action on the last day of the week-long championships. to win the B Final of the Under 16 Girls’ double sculls event – capping a big day for the pair. Incidentally, Skilling and Bradford weren’t far behind them in

that race, taking fourth place. Matthew Pearce was also in on the action on Saturday, finishing fifth in the B Final of the Men’s Under 18 Single Sculls event.

Canterbury Hockey Division One campaigns began. The season kicked into gear on the weekend with both sides heading up the road to Christchurch to play in the opening round of a long and busy season on the turf, with Hornby first up for both teams. The Mid Canterbury men, who finished second last season after being beaten in the final, had a horror start against the Hornby Emulous, as they were beaten 0-3 at Nga Puna Wai. The 18-round competition, just to reach the playoffs, is a long one though – as Mid Canterbury found out – and when they find their rhythm, they’ll be keen to right that wrong when the two sides meet again later in the campaign. The women’s side was also in action on Nga Puna Wai, taking on the Hornby Wildcats. They were eventually beaten 3-5 in a high-scoring match, but showed plenty of promise in their first hit-out for the season, and their first look at the competition too. The Ashburton side picked up goals from penalty corners

– from the sticks of Anna Gray and Lucy Boyle – while Samara Dalziel also found the back of

the goal in the season opener. Both teams have named strong squads for the season, with all

players also competing in the local Mid Canterbury Hockey competitions during the week as well.
