Digging in: Clara Watson has been busy cataloguing items from the new Court Theatre site in Christchurch.

Unearthing the treasures of Chch Daniel Alvey One man’s trash is another man’s treasure – or a woman’s in Clara Watson’s case. The former Ashburton woman, an archaeologist, has been digging around in the new Court Theatre site in Christchurch and has uncovered artefacts from 1850s high street shops. These treasures include leath-
er shoes and fancy fineware and were possibly unsold stock that was thrown away. Watson has been cataloguing these discoveries. “We’ve found a lot of archaeological features from the 19th Century,” Watson said. The collection totalled 55 boxes, which included thousands of objects. “The assemblage is quite significant because of the size,” Watson said. Watson said the objects found are from an earlier date than what they would normally find in Christchurch and being related to a business is also differ-

ent with items normally based around residential activities. Because of the 2011 earthquakes, Christchurch has been going through a rebuilding process and Watson said this was a rare opportunity, as it is not often a whole city is being knocked down and rebuilt. “From an archaeological perspective Christchurch is very interesting. “We’ve done so much archaeology compared to other cities,” Watson said. After being removed from the site, some items do require special treatment to make sure they
do not deteriorate. “The leather shoes went in a fridge to ensure they did not go mouldy,” Watson said. Watson and the team from Underground Overground Archaeology, were involved in the process before the diggers broke ground. The work was done under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014, which involves companies reaching out prior to construction, to ensure no damage is caused when digging foundations. “We stand and watch the diggers remove the dirt and work is
stopped if something is found,” Watson said. Watson is responsible for cataloguing the items found on a site. This involves, cleaning, photographing, and writing reports on the objects found. More locally Watson assisted in discoveries at the Ashburton Allens Road Chinese settlement, and monitoring the rebuild of the Ashburton Methodist church. At Ashburton College Watson had an interest in history, moving into archaeology after deciding that she could make a career out of it.

Rushtons shocked that meningitis vaccines binned Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton’s Claire and Gerard Rushton are horrified the government has allowed $2 million worth of meningitis vaccines to go unused. The Rushtons, speaking on behalf of the Meningitis Foundation, said it’s incredibly shocking and distressing to know the life-saving vaccines will go to waste. “That amounts to around 16,000 doses we estimate, which could have been given to an equivalent number of teenagers and infants, who are most at risk,” Gerard Rushton said. While the foundation is unsure why they’ve gone unused, Rushton believes there’s been “little or no attempt by the government to educate people about meningococcal disease and raise awareness of these very effective vaccines to protect against what is a killer disease”. Over 2020 and 2021, while the vaccines sat on a shelf, Rushton said the foundation is aware of at least five young people, including three under-fives, who died from meningitis and one who survived, but with severe disabilities as a result. “Those vaccines may well have prevented those tragic deaths, that’s heart-breaking for us, who know only too well what it’s like to lose a loved one to this disease,” he said. “We feel so much anguish for those families whose loved ones could be saved.” Gerard and Claire Rushton’s 16-year-old daughter, Courtenay, died of the disease in 2014. The Ashburton Guardian sought responses from Pharmac, the agency that funds meningitis vaccines and the Minister of Health but, at its deadline, no reply had been received. The disclosure has reinforced the Rushtons’ determination to

expanding nightmare for Andrew Little (the Minister of Health),” he said. “Last week it was $8 million of expired measles vaccines, this week it’s expired meningitis vaccines. Where does it end?” Dr Reti has called on Andrew Little to expand the criteria to make meningitis vaccines universal and he requests the minister releases other soon-to-expire vaccines to health providers outside the strict criteria.
Synthetic Nitrogen Fertiliser Limit What farmers need to do To help protect and improve our waterways, a limit now applies to the amount of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser applied to pastoral land. This was introduced as part of the Essential Freshwater package. Carefully managed, fertiliser is a useful farming tool. However, it can contribute to nutrient loss into soil and waterways, impacting water quality and in-stream life.

Lilies are coming to the rescue Lili Haydon Buying lilies is helping save lives and Shirley Geeson of Rakaia’s Bakker Bulbs fame wouldn’t have it any other way. Geeson picks, cuts and places small bundles of different coloured lilies into buckets for roadside sales around Rakaia from February to April. This year, Geeson said they hoped to donate $5000 from the lily sales to the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust. The trust is a charity organisation that relies on generous donors to keep their air rescue helicopters and air ambulance service running. Geeson said the $5000 target was because that was the cost of a rescue flight. They also wanted to donate to the trust because it provided a much-needed life-saving
service, especially in a rural areas. Geeson said they personally hadn’t needed to use the rescue service, but it was a cause Bakker Bulbs were proud to help out. Bakker Bulbs is a Dutch-owned lily production business, with its Rakaia site being its Southern Hemisphere lily cultivation and exporting base. Her husband, Adin Geeson, is a company director and has worked there for 22 years. This season had been a particularly tricky one for the Rakaia team because the flowers developed botrytis blight fungus, also known as grey mould. It caused circular reddish-brown spots to form on the leaves and flowers, which happened because of the wet summer and not enough wind to dry them out. Still, as challenging as the season had been, it hadn’t impacted on their air rescue trust donation motivation, which Geeson said they also planned to continue doing next year as well.

From May, the bishop will appoint an interim minister to Ashburton for three months.

Helping young Kiwis drive Lili Haydon Virtual reality is helping students become safer drivers and Ross Preece is rapt about it. The Ashburton College principal has made sure Ashburton College has a Gfactor programme. The programme uses a simulator which allows a student to navigate traffic and distractions on roads from around the country through virtual reality. In 2020 alone there was 79 fatal crashes and 509 serious injury incidents involving 15 to 24-year-
olds, according to NZTA. The car safety programme is needed, especially when young drivers were also the ones responsible for 67 of the fatal crashes. Dunedin-based Gfactor Technologies has created the simulator with new technology. Preece decided the college needed one after seeing the students at Timaru Boys’ High School using the virtual reality simulator last year. Now Ashburton students have been fortunate enough to use the simulator for the past month. And according to Preece the programme is gaining in popularity. This may have something to do with the fact that when a student books a session, they go
in the chance to win a UE boom speaker. The school only has one simulator, and with Covid restrictions there are no classes for the programme. But students seem to be using it during their study break and helping their peers figure out how to use the programme. “It’s not an apple computer, it’s complex.” Preece hopes this will also help Year 12 students to gain employment. “Not having a licence can be a barrier to getting a job,’’ Preece said. And with 70 per cent of New Zealand employees only hiring people if they have a licence, this will definitely help students.
The Lions District held their annual meeting and hybrid convention at the Braided Rivers Community Trust Event Centre on April 2. Garth Bateup was successful in his nomination for first vice district governor for the 2022/23 year, and Graham Edge was successful in his nomination for Lloyd Morgan Charitable Trust trustee.

Roads, drinking water big focus of 2022-23 plan Roads are amongst our most important assets and Council is proposing a one-off $1.7 million injection in its 2022-23 Annual Plan to catch up on maintenance in some areas.
budget, reducing the level of services could lower rates. But we want to know where people see that happening as we have already trimmed this budget as much as we can, and put off a couple of capital projects.” Council says some critical work must be completed as scheduled, including upgrades to water infrastructure in Methven, Mt Somers and Rakaia.
The floods of May 2021 had a big impact on the district’s roading network and since then Council has been trying to repair damage and get back to its cyclic major repair programme.
Mayor Brown said a further complication is the impact of rating revaluations completed in 2021, which reflect significant increases in urban property values compared to rural property values.
Mayor Neil Brown said using $1.7m from forestry reserve would go a long way to repairing more roads and doing more maintenance, which would stop a cycle of temporary pothole repairs. “We’ve heard very clearly that our community want roads to be a focus, so this funding would allow us to bring forward renewal of some key roads, which will help minimise future maintenance and the need to fill in the same potholes over and over.” He said the forestry reserve currently had a balance of $5.1m, which had built up over time from the sale of forestry and some
forestry land. “While it is unusual to allocate forestry reserve money to bring forward the major repair programme for our roading network, we felt the time is right to dip into this fund for this purpose. The forestry reserve will be left with a balance of $3.4 million.” As part of its Annual Plan consultation,
Council is asking residents what they think of using the forestry reserve to boost roading. Mayor Brown said Council was also asking if residents would be prepared to accept a lower level of day-to-day services if they wanted to reduce rates. “While record inflation and things outside of our control have affected this coming
“Despite the common misconception, a growth in property prices doesn’t mean the Council collects more rates, but it does affect how the rates are distributed amongst individual properties.” The draft Annual Plan shows Council aims to collect $44.264m in rates and its operating expenses for the 2022-23 year will be $70.6m. The difference is made up of targeted rates and other fees and charges, and returns on its investments.
Special challenges of this year's budget Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown says it has been a year of challenges, with the ongoing impacts of Covid-19, recovery from the May 2021 floods, high inflation and increasing Government regulation all putting pressure on budgets and rates. The proposed average increase for the district is currently sitting at 9.4%, although this will vary depending on area and property value.
“Just like any other business, the cost for us to purchase goods and services has risen sharply in the past year which is a major reason we’ve struggled to meet the 7.8% increase forecast in the LTP. “In response we’ve reduced budgets for some of our day-to-day services, particularly in areas where it’s likely to only have a small impact on the community.” Mayor Brown said one example is Council’s decision to review opening hours at the EA
Networks Centre after data showed only a handful of people were using the facility later in the evenings. He said such adjustments make a relatively small difference individually but add up when applied across all Council activities. “If the community was willing to accept a reduction in the level of service in some areas, we could make deeper cuts and that’s something we’d really like hear our residents’ views on.”

Let us know your thoughts We hope a good number of our residents will join us tonight for the first of our community meetings on the draft Annual Plan for 2022-23. It will be an opportunity to hear from the Mayor and wider Council about the discussions and decisions taken to this point, in what is universally acknowledged as a challenging year – thanks to covid-caused price rises and inflation. The meeting will be live-streamed in the same way that our Council meetings and other hearings have been broadcast over the past year or so, via Facebook and YouTube. He said the signs added another level of interest to the reserve, which had had a major makeover with new public toilets and landscaping.
The panels cover a range of topics, from facts about the nearby Rakaia River to early inhabitants of the town and how the surrounding land is farmed. The first settlers had to navigate the tricky Rakaia River before rail and road bridges were built, and many drowned. The first accommodation place was on the north side of the river, but Rakaia town eventually grew on the south bank. Its population today is about 1500 and local businesses mainly support the district’s productive farmers.

Council Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said Lions members identified the topics they wanted to cover and spent many hours sourcing the information. “Our Council team provided support to help design the signs and also spent time collating and refining the information. “It is a fine line between providing too much information or not enough, but the intention of the panels is to capture people’s attention and hold their interest.” For those wanting to know more, the signs have a QR code, which links to more information and is also able to be updated.
RDR's fish screen is ready for public inspection An important piece of water infrastructure for the Ashburton District will be open to the public on Sunday, so people can see a new $17 million fish screen on the side of the Rangitata River before it is submerged under water. The fish screen has been installed over the past year at the RDR’s intake at Klondyke and is especially designed to keep young salmon, trout and native fish from being trapped in the main diversion race.
“Graham Pluck and the team at Plucks Engineering Ltd built the frames; the Lions club paid for all the materials and powder coating of the frames; and John McKimmie and his very able team of Lions volunteers installed the panels.” Council's Open Spaces team had also improved the playground and added new landscaping. “We are really pleased at how the reserve is looking and we hope Rakaia people will be proud of it too,” Mr Fabish said.

PROPOSED ROAD CLOSURE
Pursuant to the Local Government Act 1974 and the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, notice is hereby given that the Ashburton District Council and NZ Transport Agency, for the purpose of allowing Ashburton Returned and Services’ Association to hold ANZAC Day services, proposes to close the following roads to ordinary vehicular traffic for the period indicated hereunder.
• HAVELOCK STREET, from Park Street to East Street intersection
As part of the monitoring process once the screen is operational, some fish will be caught at the out-take and assessed to ensure they have safely made the journey.
Ashburton District Council is a shareholder in the company that owns and operates the RDR and councillors visited the fish screen this week, ahead of the open day.
Water is diverted from the Rangitata River for three irrigation schemes, two hydroelectric power stations and for Council’s stockwater network.
RDR chief executive Tony McCormick showed them how water would enter the canal and pass through the fish screen, which is made up of seven cylindrical screens that rotate, and a portion of flat screen. The screen and supporting concrete infrastructure will all be under water when operational.
Mr McCormick said nearly $3m had been spent on engineering design and management, which included computer modelling to ensure the fish screen would work as expected.
Councillors also saw where the young fish, including eel, would emerge and be diverted back to the river.
The open day on Sunday 10 April is free and runs from 10am until 3pm, but people need to book tickets at Eventbrite. The site is 6km from the start of Klondyke Terrace off Montalto Road. Allow 30 minutes drive time from Mayfield.

‘No policy change’ just due process, council says Jonathan Leask
Environment Canterbury insists there has been no policy change on wastewater consents in Ashburton’s north-east. What is happening is a process to keep the cumulative impact of individual wastewater systems on the already high nitrate levels of the area in check. There are currently eight applications, totalling around 30 homes, for resource consent for wastewater in this area with ECan. The majority are currently on hold at the applicants’ request, while Kingan Property Investments’ four-lot subdivision is currently out for public notification on its application. That lot is adjacent to an eightlot subdivision Kingan Property Investments created around five years ago that received wastewater consent. The applicants feel that ECan has shifted the goalposts on wastewater consents in the past year, but consents planning manager Aurora Grant said “there has been no policy change restricting septic tanks”. “The issue in this part of Ashburton is that due to existing environmental conditions, the number of drinking water wells in the area, and an increase in the number of applications for discharges from onsite wastewater systems,” Grant said. “We have been asking for more information from consent applicants on how proposed discharges will meet environmental
The Stockers (from left) Poppy, Brad, Robbie, Dean, and Ellie, stand at the entrance to where their home would be by now, if not for an ongoing hold up around wastewater consents. PHOTO SUPPLIED outcomes/targets and ensure discharges won’t impact the health of waterbodies and nearby neighbours.” The cumulative impact of more septic tanks being installed in the area is the issue with residential density increasing, Grant said, and it is important for ECan to ensure that drinking water is safe and environmental effects from discharges are mitigated. The applications are for advanced aerated systems, either discharging by drip irrigation or a sand trench, but Grant said they can’t remove nitrates which is what ECan is concerned about, and that’s part of the reason for the process being ongoing as
ECan continue to work with systems suppliers. Its policy remains unchanged, and Grant also said it was not a case of ECan being any more stringent than following the consent process. “We are required to assess each individual application on its own merits against rules and policies set out in regional and national legislation. “We are also required to consider all effects from a proposal, including cumulative effects. In this case, we have had an intensification of urban development, which increases the potential cumulative effects, and in turn, consideration of these risk factors.”
While the applicants go through a rigorous process to get wastewater consent, once a system is installed there is no physical monitoring of its ongoing compliance. “Compliance on newly activated on-site wastewater consents is completed via desktop officers covering the region. “The consent holder is sent a request to provide the installation certificate, as-built plans, photographs of the land application system, and maintenance contract.” ECan’s incident response officers only get involved with onsite wastewater compliance when there is a pollution complaint, she said. “In some cases, officers proac-
tively inspect for any discharges around tanks. “We are currently investigating our compliance history around 6000 septic tank consents.” Grant said ECan monitors nitrate levels in two wells in the north-east Ashburton area, one quarterly and the other annually.

Hindsight suggests there was a major missed opportunity that is hampering development in Ashburton’s north-east. Installing reticulated wastewater services to Ashburton’s north-east area would cost “several million” dollars and it was something that was floated by the Ashburton District Council 20 years ago, but there wasn’t enough support from the residents. Now, without a reticulated wastewater and rapid urban development in the area, Environment Canterbury is putting a hold on progress due to the cumulative risks of additional septic tanks. An obvious solution to the consenting issues would be introducing a reticulated wastewater scheme. Infrastructure services group manager, Neil McCann, said no detailed work has been done on providing a wastewater service to the area, but the council “would expect it to be several million dollars”. “Based on the approach for pre-
Neil McCann vious extensions of this nature, the benefiting landowners would be expected to meet the capital cost,” he said. “The scheme extension simply becomes part of the wider Ashburton scheme, and the landowners would pay the prevailing wastewater targeted rate.” Compared to the costs involved in resource consents and ongoing maintenance of the individual systems, it could pose a better out-
come for the landowners and developers than battling the consents process. McCann said the council consulted on a reticulated water scheme to the area in late 2000, with the cost of the scheme estimated at that time at $1.7m, but there was insufficient support, around 12 per cent, to justify proceeding with the project. As part of that consultation he said the question was asked if the community wanted council to undertake a feasibility study on a reticulated wastewater service also. It fared better, with 28 per cent support, but was “still far too low to justify undertaking the feasibility study”.

Ashburton makeup and beauty artist Susan Zhen makes over her client Camille Dock.

Creative outlet a beauty Lili Haydon A student is turning her passion for beauty into a lucrative side hustle – and she’s indebted to her parents for helping make it happen. Susan Zhen, in her third year studying pharmacy at Otago University, lives in Ashburton when she’s not in Dunedin. Outside her heavy bookwork and exam schedule, she’s turned her love of makeup into an online product and in-person makeup business, displaying an impressive work ethic that she’s learned off her parents. “My parents are my biggest inspiration,” said Zhen, whose family own the
Tinwald Fish and Chip Shop and who moved to Ashburton after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake destroyed their hospitality business in the city. Zhen’s beauty offerings include doing makeup for people at weddings, 21sts and school balls and having started up an e-commerce (electronic) business selling lashes online. She also has her own Facebook page, Makeup by Susan Z. Most of Zhen’s clients are Ashburton or Timaru-based, but she’s hoping to expand the business, especially her lashes gig, which started earlier this year and had already resulted in 15 orders. Zhen said she was mostly a selftaught makeup artist, having picked up tips of the trade after watching YouTube tutorials. “It’s my creative outlet,’’ she said. “Whenever I see a new look, I will try replicate it.”
But it wouldn’t have been possible without mum and dad, who Zhen said sparked her beauty calling by taking the family on a holiday to America five years ago. It was on that holiday that Zhen discovered the makeup haven Sephora, an international retailer that sells over 300 personal care and beauty products, and only opened in New Zealand two years ago. “I spent all the money I had saved for the holiday on makeup,” Zhen said. It appears to be money well spent, with all Zhen’s hard work paying off for a passion that has suddenly become a nice little earner to boot. “It’s a great income for a student.”
Right – Susan Zhen shows off her lash extensions and polished makeup look which matches her dress perfectly.
Sharplin Falls track work now moved to spring Jonathan Leask Step by step the Mt Somers Walkway Society is returning access to Sharplin Falls. The society has received a $10,000 boost from the NZ Community Trust this week as part of its $434,233 community investments in the Canterbury region in March. Society president Charles Ross said it was another welcome contribution to the project to restore access to Sharplin Falls. Access has been closed to the iconic falls following post-earthquake rockfalls in 2011, but the walkway society plan to change that. They plan to construct a new track, and will take whatever money they can get to fund the project. The project includes constructing
and placing two new 30m steel bridges which makes up the bulk of the cost of the project which is estimated to be around $470,000. The project has been in planning for two years and now with mapping the new track and seeking access approval from DOC completed their focus is on funding the construction. Ross said they have received 12 tonnes of steel, with a value of around $53,000, for the bridges and were in the process of finalising the engineering specifications. They had hoped to begin working on the track itself before winter, but are now looking to a spring start, Ross said, and installing the new bridges via helicopter in October. Track works will also be waiting until spring. “We want to build it all in a short time period to avoid any risk from people heading up an unfinished track. “Once the bridges are constructed we’ll need access to their location so we can carry in the necessary equipment and material for their installation.”
The delayed start provides a silver lining of more time to gather funds. Earlier this year they fronted the Ashburton District Council over eligibility concerns for the council’s community project grant as, if successful, the funds wouldn’t have been available until after July, but with the shift in timeframe that will no longer be an issue. They have already been successful with funding grants from the Mid South Canterbury Trust and the Lion Foundation, and now the NZ Community Trust as well as other smaller grants and donations from local groups. Ross said the society has also applied to the Government’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund for $110,000.

OUR VIEW
When you’re positive you’re positive R
emember a time when a sniffle and a bit of a sore throat was nothing more than a common cold? You’d stock yourself up with the appropriate treatments, throw yourself into bed for a couple of days and fight off the night sweats and the stinging aftertaste of throat lozenges and away you’d go again. That was only a few years ago, but it seems like a lifetime, doesn’t it? Such is the way that Covid has struck us, that we seem to find ourselves questioning everything. I’ve been rather poorly this week. Headaches, temperatures, sore throat and just general body aches and pains. Nothing unusual for this time of the year during a seasonal change, but for some reason it’s intensified considering the threat of Covid being out there in the community.
Matt Markham We’ve had the symptoms to look out for shoved down our throats like the proverbial swab test so much so that any inkling of one of the big three signs automatically leads itself to believing you’ve captured the pandemic that has changed the world. Twice daily rapid antigen tests (RATs) this week in my household can only be described as the same anticipation as awaiting a pregnancy test. You know a positive is going to change your life, even if only for a week, but it’s still huge. Thus far, I’ve failed to see double lines. Something I’m not
disappointed about, but more perplexed. Having watched family and friends fall to the Covid isolation chamber after testing positive, I feel like I’ve learned a little bit more on what to look out for. We all have in fact it’s just become a way of life.
“
make sure he knew it. Yet they tested positive, constantly – and from the moment they started feeling a little off. And here I am sitting here feeling like the train went forward and back as many times as council workers are forced to revisit a lone pothole on a
I’ve doubted my self-testing ability so many times over the past few days that I’m pretty sure I’m starting to get a complex.”
My own symptoms and condition mirror another family member who was laid up for four days straight, positive with Covid, and feeling like he’d been hit by a freight train that then backed up and went over him again just to
Mid Canterbury road. And there’s not a positive test in sight. It doesn’t make sense; it actually invades your mind and leaves you wondering am I doing this right?
I’ve doubted my self-testing ability so many times over the past few days that I’m pretty sure I’m starting to get a complex. On so many occasions, despite the perils that come with it, I’ve walked up after the customary 15 minutes to look at a test, so convinced that I’m positive, only to feel a pang of disappointment when I’m not. It’s tough. You want to do the right thing by everyone out there in the community. If I feel well enough to step out into the world from my hermit kingdom of the past few days, I’ll do so. But it will be done with a hesitation that despite following everything that I should in terms of guidelines and rules I’m not 100 per cent confident I should. It’s a complex moral dilemma to find oneself in. But one in which you can’t just sit around and wait.

Christie ‘close to peak’ A
ll Blacks and Blues halfback Finlay Christie knows an opportunity when he sees it and is reaping the benefit from returning to his home region to play DHL Super Rugby Pacific in Auckland. A combination of improved game time, a more successful Blues team, and exposure to test rugby with the All Blacks have Scots-born Christie performing at close to his peak, week-in and week-out. Christie played his age group rugby for Counties Manukau and attended St Kentigern’s College. Being closer to family and friends and knowing his environs had helped him settle in with the Blues, and he has enjoyed his time with the side. “It’s been a good couple of years so far,” he said. Having been part of the Chiefs (nine games in 2017) and Hurricanes (14 in
give the side a jolt of positivity when a lift in effort is needed. “As a halfback and first five-eighths, it is always nice to get front foot ball. It gives you more time on the ball, more space for your forwards, and is better for your team. It does boost your energy when your big boys are rolling their sleeves up and getting you quick ball,” he said. Christie said with the Chiefs on Saturday and the Crusaders a week later the Blues feel the next two weeks could be season-defining. “We We had a tough start to the season with a loss to the Hurricanes [32-33]. But, we feel like we’ve come back well from that, and we’re looking to keep that on. “The Chiefs are right up there at the moment in form, and we like testing ourselves against the best, and we have got to beat teams like that if we want to win a championship.”
“That’s been a massive work on for me, and I guess one of my strengths as well in trying to get that ball up quickly and be fast to the breakdown. “It’s a continual work on, and a massive part of every game.” Christie thrives in being part of the team’s pulse, a player whose speed can

Ashburton Golf Club
Another beautiful weekend found lots of golfers hitting the courses across the district. At Brandon, we had round 2 of the club champs qualifying, and the Big hunky Yorkshireman (should that be Chunky?) was in fine form again, shooting a nett 68 to just pip Greg Fleming on countback. Kevin Smith was a further 2 shots back on 70, with Richard Mac and Tim Newton snagging themselves 71s. It just shows how fickle the golfing gods are, when young Perry can shoot 81 off the stick at Tinwald the week before, then follow it up with a 99 at Brandon. Still, luckily for him, he was partnering Paddy again, so he managed the snaffle a free drink off David Rush and young Fritz, but true to form Perry returned the drink when he failed to get past the ladies tees on number 2. This Saturday we have the Brandon Cup round 3, at present after 2 rounds Terry K sits in the lead with 75 points, 1 clear of Kevin Smith. Paddy is on 72 and then Barry Jury, Paul Greer and Chris Lovelock are all on 71. Should be a very good final round with quite a few good players in with a shout. The whole draws this week is sponsored by our great friends at Gabites chartered accountants, many thanks to the lovely people there. Sunday pennants has kicked off, and as of writing I do not have all the results in, but I do have the Patterson ones. Dylan and his young pups got their dander back, came out yapping and nipping at ankles and managed to tip over a strong Tinwald side, good wins for Dylan, Tom, Jordy and Mitch and very unsurprising losses to young Spud and James. The old dogs welcomed Davey Hampton into the squad, and he kicked off with a great win, as did Arkright who was 8 up after 9. Captain Courageous had a half after being 4 down with 4 to go, but Greig, Bruce and Perry are all dropped for next time. Next round is early May. Well, that will do for now. Good golfing.
Ashburton MSA Bowling Club
On Saturday April 1 our bowling club held its season ending closing day, with members competing for our annual Hec
minutes. Any important business was dealt with, and members were thanked for their help and participation during the previous year. The Mid Canterbury Federation Representative Mavis Wilkins, then ‘took’ the chair and proceeded to conduct the Election of Offices. Those elected were: President – V McKenzie, Secretary – L Baughan, Treasurer – R Sheppard, elected to MC Federation – A Simister. Others were elected to the Committee. Hinds Women’s Institute is happy to help and serve in the community during the coming year. The March WI meeting was still held, but under the cloud of the continuing Covid virus restrictions. The planned picnic in the domain was cancelled and instead a few members assembled at the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum to view the wonderful stone collection displayed in the Murney Room. There the collector described his gathered collection in detail via a video screen. In the main museum area the collection of old Ashburton town photographs provoked memories and a few – “I remember that!” calls. The April meeting is post Anzac Day, but will include war time memories and memorabilia.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club
Last Thursday we joined with the Bowling Club and had two games each of
bowls and petanque. The result was that we thought the bowlers played better petanque than we played bowls! It was a great afternoon with great hilarity on both playing grounds, finished off with a cuppa. On Sunday the President’s Triples Trophy was won by Karen Bensdorp, Lyn Allison, Ian Hubbard; 2nd Mavis Thompson, Nicky Foden, Mick Little; 3rd Jan Guilford, Johnny Wright, Adelys Taraunu; 4th Joan Healey, Kate Marriott, Neville Bensdorp. Next weekend is a busy one, with the Stephen Kyle Mixed Doubles Tournament being held on Saturday. On Sunday the Ashburton Doubles are played, and with both games open to other clubs it will be a great opportunity to see some top players in action. It is fantastic to see five new paid up members at our club, and we still have more thinking about joining. There is a very exciting vibe at present, with lots of social and competitive games happening. From 23 April, we are going to be playing on a Saturday afternoon from 1pm, so just turn up at the pistes and you will be given instruction from two or three of our Committee members. Boules will be available for your use. We are starting off with a 6 week period to see what interest there is but we are prepared to do this for the winter months. You are most welcome to join us on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 1pm at 115 Racecourse Road. Learn something new and finish off with a cup of tea and chat in the clubrooms.

Members had very generously provided baking for the Cancer Society. “Display:” Family History Item” members had brought along many valued and treasured family items which were all very interesting. Reports from the Mid Canterbury Federation meeting, all WI’s were represented. Ideas for the Bays were given by most Institutes. Officers School will be held on Friday April 3 at the Senior Centre. The Federation thanked Sue Kent for efficient role as Minute Secretary and was presented with a gift. Dianne Carter and Isabell Page were nominated for Executive. Quizo/Cup Day will be held on July 31st. Speaker - Rita Wright was welcomed to the meeting. Rita shared with members the interest she had working at both the Public Library and the Ashburton Museum. Rita spoke of her early days of schooling at Murchison and how two teachers had influenced her early years of literature which led to her interest in the Public Library and the Ashburton Museum. As curator at the Museum Rita spent many interesting years learning about Ashburton and the surrounding district. Dianne thanked Rita for her very interesting life story and was presented with a gift. Next month will be our Birthday month. Afternoon tea brought the meeting to a close.

Mid Canterbury’s horse and dog racing action
Can Ricky upset the Superstars? Matt Markham There’s a little bit of local about tomorrow night’s Superstar Championship at Addington Raceway. Horse of the moment Cranbourne will look to extend his winning streak to four in the Group Two feature, worth $50,000, but he’ll be met with strong resistance from a good field of pacers, including a potential knockout hope with one Ricky May sitting in the bike. A G’s White Socks has returned from injury again and will make his third appearance of the campaign tomorrow, having caught the eye with a fast-finishing effort behind Cranbourne last week in which he ran out of room late. “It was a good performance, gee he made up a lot of ground,” May said after the race. “He feels good, nice and strong – we just need that little bit of luck.”
M8
Luck hasn’t come in the barrier draw with numbers selected on a rating basis which has the Greg and Nina Hope trained pacer drawn wide, with many noted speedsters inside him. “The preferential barrier draws are hurting him a bit, it makes it very hard for them because they generally settle in the back half of the field.” With a hot pace guaranteed tomorrow, May’s best option will be to wait for his shot with the big pacer. His sectionals have been as good as most in both runs back from a spell, and if he can find the back of the right horse then he’s going to get his chance to get a win on the board. The Superstars Championship will only be superseded on the night by the Group One Fred Shaw Memorial NZ Trotting Championship, with a mouth-watering clash set to unfold among New Zealand’s best trotters. Recent millionaire graduate Sundees Son will go around a short-priced favourite, but his allocation to the one marble from behind the mobile will be some

the race will be equally as important as the last. If either Bolt For Brilliance or Muscle Mountain can fly the gate and quickly find the markers, then the race becomes really interesting. Then there’s Oscar Bonavena, the once-touted king of all trotters in the land, who is on the comeback from injury and having just his second start from his Regan Todd base. He was excellent first-up behind Muscle Mountain a fortnight ago, and if he’s close enough turning for home then there’s a big chance he’ll give his rivals a fright too. From a local perspective during the night, the Simon Adlam-trained Wavethebill will be looking to overcome a wide draw and cap off some nice recent form with a victory, while maiden pacer Swift Guy is knocking on the door and finds a very winnable race for trainer Kerry O’Reilly. The Alan Ford-trained Navara could be one of the knockout chances of the night in the first race.

Emerging talent a top priority
A new Mid Canterbury Netball (MCN) initiative all about providing more development opportunities has wrapped up with an awesome two-day programme at the EA Networks Centre. MCN introduced a new Emerging Talent programme late last year, initially an idea to help secondary school-aged players develop and strengthen, but it ended up being so much more than that. They looked at how the Emerging Talent programme could also be an opportunity to develop and upskill coaches and umpires. Mid Canterbury Netball development officer/umpire co-ordinator Natalie Corbett said a three-legged stool approach was taken to it – the three legs of that stool being players, coaches and umpires. “If we’re doing something for players we need to look at how we can also incorporate our coaches and umpires in to what we’re doing, because for netball in Mid Canterbury to be strong, we need all three of the legs of that stool to be strong,” Corbett said. With that in mind, MCN coach developer Claire Tappin came up with the Ropu Whakaako concept as a way to include coaches in the programme by inviting them to come along and watch some amazing coaches in action,
Just some of the amazing young talent emerging on Mid Canterbury’s netball courts. while Corbett invited local umpires and umpire coaches along to the game play session to assist with their development. MCN’s Emerging Talent programme began late last year when players were invited along, either because they were part of Mid Canterbury rep teams in 2021 and would be eligible for rep teams again in 2022, or after being nominated by their club. They were given an off-season training plans and then came together for three Friday evening sessions, before the programme culminated in two full on days at the EA
Networks Centre at the weekend (April 2-3). Tappin said some amazing coaches came along to run each session. The Friday night sessions were taken by Andrea Cousins and Cindy Meadows, James Love and Sally Carr, and Kirsty Naish, who kindly took the place of Mainland NNL assistant coach Geni Ah Tong, who had to withdraw. Then at the weekend, former Mainland NNL coach Ronelle Van Dongen, Netball NZ NetballSmart development officer Hannah Coutts, and Netball NZ trainer Tom Houghton took the Saturday
sessions. MCN’s 2022 rep coaches, and a range of local coaches and players took sessions on Sunday focusing on position specific play in the morning, and game play in the afternoon. Tappin said a number of coaches took the opportunity to come along to the sessions to further their own development, which was great to see. With the 2022 netball season, and representative netball trials just around the corner, it’s hoped that the players who were involved with the Emerging Talent programme will now be ready to hit the ground running.

Lowry Cup to finally hit the greens Matt Markham They’ve had to wait a little longer than they were supposed to, but 11 of Mid Canterbury’s best lawn bowlers will shoot for glory in the illustrious Lowry Cup singles this weekend. After the initial day of qualifying was rained off, a rescheduled event was held for qualifying in the prestigious annual event, with some of the region’s biggest names still in play heading into Saturday’s post-section stage. They’ll do battle on the Ashburton MSA Bowling Green from 9am on Saturday, with six players to compete in the first round to find the three winners who will advance to the quarter finals of the event. Some big games are promised in that early round, with extra attention sure to be placed on the match up of Mat Bassett and Simon Fleetwood. Bassett comes into the event in good form having recently won the Mid Canterbury Champion of Champions singles events, but previous meetings between the pair have always been hard-fought affairs that go right down to the wire. Former winner Jeff Nowell will also do battle early doors, taking on Allenton’s Richard Kane, while Brent Mayson and Craig Fowles will square off in the other match. Those who get the free ride into the quarter finals include former winner, Michael Lawson, who is joined by Allenton clubmates John Drayton and Jock O’Connor, while home green advantage is on offer for both Linton Muir and Wayne McCarthy who join them. The second round is set to begin at 11am.
Seniors champions crowned Matt Markham Senior champions were crowned on the hallowed turf of the Braided Rivers Community Trust Tennis Centre on the weekend, and there was more than the odd surprise along the way. More than 70 players, competing across nine separate events, took part in the two-day tourna-
Shield squad Jack Tiller, Cameron McCracken, Tyler Leonard, Rhys Cromie, Jake Parsons, Connor Brosnahan, Jason Feutz, Riley Breen, Ryan Watt, Peter Leonard, Joshua Gilbert, Ollie Bubb, Peter Kirwan, Lee Gilbert, Gareth Evans, Tessa McCann, Ashleigh Leonard, Jess Aldridge, Maia Liu, Isabella van Dooren, Holly-Jayne Feutz, Jade Brosnahan, Jane Brosnahan, Dianna Leonard and Libby Feutz.
ment which caps the end of the tennis season for many players – although a few will still have an eye on what’s upcoming this weekend when the Browning Shield goes on the line. Play began on Saturday with both the men’s and women’s doubles, which were split into two divisions. In Women’s A, a fierce battled ensued in the final between the combination of Karen Tait and Debbie Wallace who took on Jane Brosnahan and Dianna Leonard. The match went to 11-10 in favour of Tait and Wallace, who then picked up the victory in the tie-break in an enthralling match which lasted almost two hours. The women’s B division went to Ann-Marie Halliday and Elaine Middlewood, who emerged victorious over Ching Evans and Lynna Mackenzie. In Men’s A the experience of Rhys Cromie and Peter Leonard proved too strong for a good field of players with the duo winning all three matches, including a tight one against Jason Feutz and Julian Main. Men’s B was played as an elimination, with Anthonie De Heer and Craig Tinkler winning the final over James Callaghan and Steve Edwards. Also competed for on Saturday
Ashleigh Leonard will step out for Mid Canterbury this weekend as they shoot for a ninth successive Browning Shield victory.
was the Men’s Doubles 120+ for combinations with a combined age of more than 120 years, and Robbie Bennett and Howard Wilson were the victors as the only pairing in the group to win both of their matches. On Sunday, action shifted to the mixed doubles with many strong combinations joining forces. Mixed A saw both Jane Brosnahan and Julian Main avenge their second-placings on Saturday to win the event, beating John Honeywell and Jo Edwards in the final. Mixed B saw Karl Mitchell and
Amy Truscott emerge from a field of 13 combinations to take the win, beating Robbie Bennett and Dianna Leonard in the final. Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury Tennis will look to sign off on the season in style on the weekend when they head to the annual Browning Shield, looking for their ninth straight success. Played against North Canterbury, Malvern and Ellesmere, the event is the representative pinnacle for the season and selectors have left nothing to chance in naming their squad for the weekend’s play.
The squad features a strong amount of depth, calling on local talents who have been impressing in the interclub scene in Ashburton or representing Country Mid Canterbury in Tennis Canterbury events. A number of players have also come into the side after plying their trade in the Premier competition in Christchurch over the summer, including noted female players Tessa McCann and Ashleigh Leonard. Jack Tiller and Cameron McCracken spearhead a strong men’s team.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Keeping up a frantic pace of life can feel reassuring on some levels, as all the interaction and responsibility can pass for a sense of importance. You’ll slow it down and learn something interesting about yourself. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The dance of friendship is complex and seemingly nonsensical. Friends tell each other lies out of kindness, they tell each other the truth out of kindness, too. These decisions will be instinctive and immediate. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Other people’s lives may look a certain way from the outside, but they may as well exist on Jupiter for all you really know about them. Concern yourself strictly with your own world today. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): If the only way you can help others is silly and impractical, you just may be providing a more profound sort of help than you know. Everyone needs levity. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): The superior satisfaction of selfrighteousness can be delicious indeed, which is why so many cannot resist. But judging others is mightily unattractive, so maybe protect your looks with a “live and let live” stance. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): As much as you enjoy a good story, you also prize the days like this one, where everything goes so smoothly that there is no conflict or obstacle large enough to mention. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): The so-called secret isn’t one. And it’s not costly either. The “secret” is just another accessible option that people miss because it rather unglamorously blends in. Step back. What’s everyone overlooking? SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It’s like only one door can be opened at a time. You open a new one, and that closes all other options. Move forward in confidence anyway because none of your options is drastically different from the others. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You have this ability to make other people feel that while they are with you, whatever the two of you are doing is preferable to what anyone else in the world could possibly be up to. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Things don’t have to be high-drama to be exciting. In fact, these days, you prefer your drama to be in the world of entertainment, not in your real life. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your moods, behaviours, attitudes and actions will go down in history in the sense that others will remember what it’s like to interact with you. That reputation will be part of your legacy. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Life is not a test with option D, “all of the above,” and today you will need to make a definite choice. The good news is making a decision now saves you from making an excuse later.

OXFORD STREET CHURCH STRENGTHENING
Reopening to new beginnings
L
ast Sunday was a memorable day in the life of Hakatere Presbyterian Oxford Street Church. For the first time in four years parishioners worshipped inside their church building. Following the Christchurch earthquake, the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand, introduced tougher strengthening requirements. With Ashburton being in an earthquake prone area, both St Andrew’s and Oxford Street churches had to improve their safety standards. The church closed its doors in 2018, parishioners met the cost through investment funds and the roof and walls were reinforced at the cost of several thousand dollars. April 3, last Sunday, was harvest thanksgiving and also a celebration of the building’s reopening.
“It was another new beginning and a wonderful homecoming for members of the church,” Minister, Rev Johanna Warren said. The church was opened and dedicated nearly 52 years earlier, on September 27, 1970, but there was a Presbyterian presence in Oxford Street long before then.
After alterations, the East Church Hall was opened on September 26, 1946, and was part of St Andrew’s Parish. The minister for oversight of Ashburton East, Allenton and Wakanui was the Rev David Steedman. A new parish was formed in the 1950s under the leadership of Henry Lane and

The first church building in the Hampstead area was two large structures purchased from the army camp at Westerfield in 1945 and transported to Oxford Street to be used for church services.
was named Trinity. With the growth of numbers in the 1950s, the Trinity Parish was split and St Paul’s was born, covering Hampstead, Netherby and Wakanui. Church services continued to be
held in the church hall, however it was agreed a purpose-built church should be erected. Fundraising schemes began with large scale parish dinners at the Radiant Hall, concerts and a garden party arranged. After visits to other churches, plans were accepted by the congregation in 1968 and the tender for building the church from Williamson Construction was accepted and work began. When the church opened in September 1970 by the Very Revd Dr J.S. Somerville, the financial cost came to $52,452 including a new Baldwin organ. The church, as it is today, seats about 250 people with another 30 seats in the upstairs gallery. Features include symbols on the life of St Paul shown on sandblasted panels and the 26 foot-high focal window, depicting Jesus as the Good Shepherd.

OXFORD STREET CHURCH STRENGTHENING
Challenges ahead W
ith parishioners back in their Oxford Street building after a four year upgrade, the church is now facing a future challenge. An anonymous author, writing in the latest parish bulletin, wrote these words last Sunday under the heading Moving Forward. “An advertisement that has been on TV recently lately always catches my eye. A father and his daughter are out driving and the young girl says: “Why is it that we can never see the future?” “How true and this is a good example relating to the Hakatere Parish. What is its future? We can’t all agree that Hakatere is an ageing congregation and allow it to dwindle out in number. So what is the parish’s future? Not a lot if we sit on our hands and do nothing. “There are endless opportunities in the
community that we could pursue – that is if we wanted to, accept the guidance and be prepared to carry them out. “Oxford Street Church is a good centre hub for many activities in the community with the local school nearby and a new subdivision in the making on the boundary of town with approximately 400 new houses being built. “The Oxford Street Church is able to adapt seating according to the various sizes required and to accommodate both large and smaller services and has always been regarded as a friendly church. “The church grounds have the scope to allow community events such as the annual fair and other church related activities. I challenge Parish Council to formalise one site by the end of 2022. “If you can’t think about the future, you cannot have one.”

OXFORD STREET CHURCH STRENGTHENING
Jenny Scott has been a pillar of Presbyterian pilgrimage F
or about 75 of her 83 years Jenny Scott has been a driving force at Hakatere Presbyterian’s Oxford Street Church. Jenny was at last Sunday’s service when parishioners celebrated their first service back after four years away, but she was also a member of the parish for many years before that. Her first memory was going to Sunday School in the 1940s in the church hall in Oxford Street. Hampstead was a growing suburb and the Presbyterian Church believed it needed a presence on the east side of Ashburton. “We wore our best clothes to Sunday School,” Jenny recalled. “Miss Cairns was my teacher. She might have had a first name, but she was Miss Cairns to all the children.” Jenny progressed through Sunday School to Bible Class and Girls’ Brigade and then chose teaching as her career. For about eight years she studied at Teachers’ College in Dunedin and taught around Ashburton, but then, when a property in Oxford Street was offered for sale, Jenny and her husband, Alf, bought it. The purchase renewed her interest in St Paul’s as it was then called. It wasn’t long before Jenny became Sunday School superintendent with well over 100 youngsters attending. Sunday School was held at 10am, then some of them stayed on for the 11am morning service. The parish was growing and deserved its own church building. Parishioners set to and raised the funding for its construction. Jenny recalls cake stalls in the arcade, bottle drives, pea straw sales, recipe book sales and the men grew and sold potatoes as well as firewood. One means of raising funds depended on the size of a woman’s waist. Jenny remembers them getting the measuring tape out and, depending on their contours, they gave money. If a woman’s waist measured 20 inches, they gave two pounds. If your waist was greater than that, you had to hand over larger amounts. “It was just a fun thing we did,” she said.
When the building finally opened on September 27, 1970, Jenny played a key role. She was Sunday School Superintendent, bulletin editor, a member of the Association of Presbyterian Women and today she’s a member of the Parish Council and serves on the property and finance committee. Jenny has one vivid memory of the church just before it opened in 1970. She had some curious children in the Sunday School and they wanted to see inside the building before it was dedicated. But the minister, Rev Haydn Pirie, wouldn’t let it happen. The church had to be consecrated first before anyone was allowed inside. Jenny’s two children, Richard and Alastair, were christened in the
church hall and grandchildren have been blessed in the church. The Presbyterian form of worship has always been familiar to Jenny. “It was something I grew up with, my friends are there and I got to know many of the ministers and their families who served at Hakatere Presbyterian’s two churches, at Oxford Street and Tinwald, over the years,” she said. With the church building closing four years ago to have its walls and ceiling strengthened, Jenny and many parishioners have longed to be back. Last Sunday they returned to their spiritual home. “It was nice to be back and to hear the music again. I felt I was coming home,” she said. “I’ve celebrated many of the church’s milestones over the years.” Worship is held at Oxford Street on the first and third Sundays of the month and at Tinwald on the
second and fourth Sundays. While Jenny Scott acknowledges the church has an ageing congregation, she wants it to remain the centre of worship in Hampstead.
