Ashburton College student pride group leaders were almost in tears when they were presented with a replacement rainbow community flag.“It means so much and the Pride group will see it as a sign of hope to look towards,” group leader Imogene Felton said. The Ashburton College Pride Group comprises 10 students, who hope to promote acceptance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI+) rainbow community in the school. But they became upset when their rainbow flag was stolen and burnt, apparently by other students. It had been hoisted up the flagpole at the college during June’s Pride month, which nationally is dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ communities all around the world. It was during that month that the flag was destroyed. Fortunately, a Guardian reader, who felt so aggrieved by reading the story of the burnt flag and what it represented, donated a new one. The flag and a letter was dropped into the Guardian office because the author wanted to encourage the group to “keep pushing for tolerance and acceptance’’. The donor emphasised the importance of never giving up in a letter they wrote. The flag, while being a symbol of what they represented, could always be replaced.

The race is on in the Ashburton Ward with the local voice of Mid Canterbury radio one of the latest people in the running for Ashburton District Council. Hokonui FM breakfast host Phill Hooper is running for a seat on the council and is joined by Carol Johns, the organiser of community events like the Santa Parade, Mid Town Mardi Gras and Waitangi onTheEast.other new candidates coming forward are Rob Mackle and Keith Townshend in the Eastern Ward. With Hooper, Johns, and sitting councillor Carolyn Cameron also expected to enter the race, there will be at least 10 candidates running for the five seats in the Ashburton Ward.

The nominations of Mackle and Townshend means there will be an election in the Eastern Ward, with sitting councillor Lynette Lovett and newcomer Richard Wilson, the son of retiring councillor Stuart Wilson already standing. The mayoralty remains a two-horse race between incumbent Neil Brown and local businessman Jeff Swindley. The West Ward currently has enough candidates to fill the vacancies without an election process. There will be no need for an expensive by-election for the Methven Community Board with the nominations of Allan Lock, Robin Jenkinson, and Megan Fitzgerald covering the fiveThevacancies.Braided Rivers Community Trust had only five nominations for its six vacancies.

Of those Cameron and Braam are the only current councillors standing again, Russell Ellis and Thelma Bell are former councillors and the other six candidates are newcomers.

The recent run of heavy rainfall has caused an estimated $1.5 million of damage to the Ashburton district’s already battered roading network. Ashburton District Council infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann informed the councillors yesterday that the expected cost of the past few weeks of heavy rainfall events has been initially estimated at $1.5m. As a comparison, McCann said the district had suffered around $5m worth of damage from the May 2021 flood event. “We currently are desperately trying to chase potholes,” McCann said. “We now have three teams out working on roads, tidying up and filling in potholes.”“Thistime of the year it’s really difficult to fix them. We can only temporarily fill until the weather gets better and we can do some decent repairs.” The council is preparing an application for emergency works funding to cover a large percentage of the damage bill, he Roadingsaid. manager, Mark Chamberlain, said the most damage has occurred in the high country – Double Hill Run Road, Ashburton Gorge Road, Hakatere Potts Road, Hakatere Heron Road and the roads affected by Dry Creek flooding again. The council added $300,000 to the previous financial year’s roading repair programme to bring in an extra stabilising machine to focus on potholes.

“A large proportion of that work has stood up really well. A few areas not as well.”Those failures are the responsibility of the contractors to repair at no extra cost to the council, McCann said. The council has included an extra $1.7m in the annual plan for major roadingSittingrepairs.Mayor Neil Brown said that potholes are not an issue unique to Ashburton, but all over New Zealand, and haven’t been helped by the reduced amount of funding coming from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to maintain roads.

“Underfunding over the years is starting to show up,” Brown said. “We have stretched the things out and sweated the asset and we are now paying for it from a lack of funding.”

Recent heavy rain fall has damaged roads across the district to the tune of an estimated $1.5 million including flooding on Muirheads Road, a major slip at McCracken Gully, and several instances of flooding along Thompsons Track.

He said the council applies for more money every year and Waka Kotahi wasn’t approving all of it, leaving a shortfall of funding. All local roads around the country are subject to the FAR (financial assistance rate) of around 51 per cent from Waka Kotahi and 49 per cent from the local council.Brown has raised the issue with the other Canterbury mayors at the regional transport committee, which he said is investigating the funding shortfall across the Canterbury region and will have a dollar figure at its next meeting.

Given the wild weather in the last few weeks, it’s a time ly reminder to drive to the conditions and take your time to make sure you get to your destination safely. There is a lot of water on the roads and snow in the higher parts of our region, this can make the roads quite hazardous, ice can cause your vehicle to lose trac tion, and standing water can cause aquaplaning. So always drive to the conditions, take your time and look out for road hazards. The Walnut Avenue construction area continues to cause accidents, my staff tell me. Just remember to slow down to the 30kph limit in the area and make sure the way is clear before entering the intersection. Given that it is State Highway One there are a lot of big vehicles that travel through the round about.Youare better to take safety first, so pull up and pause and make sure the way is clear before you head through.

The Bylaw also obtained a new name, after being previously known as the Mobile Shops, Stalls and Hawkers Bylaw. The Council agreed that the new title was clearer and better described its purpose.

New sites for public traders as bylaw adopted

Ashburton District Council Chief Executive Hamish Riach says the initiative is a great opportunity for artists to showcase their talents, and is encouraging people to make a submission.

“This is a chance not only to share your work with Mid Canterbury, but also much further afield. The programme is a real win-win for our community. We get to have fantastic artworks in our streetscape that celebrate our people and stories, and also provide work and promotion of our local Requestsartists."

The project was so successful last year, Chorus has partnered with Ashburton District Council again to turn some of their more frequently tagged cabinets into painted art works.

New permitted sites for mobile traders, including food caravans, have been established across the District after the Council adopted the Trading in Public Spaces Bylaw in late July.

The Chorus Cabinet Art Programme is back in Ashburton District and the call is out for design submissions from local artists across the district.

These cabinets become works of art in the street, often telling stories about the communities in which they are located and help to discourage tagging.

for designs are now open until 31 August. A Council panel will select the finalists before they are submitted to Chorus for final approval. The successful applicants will need to be able to complete the work by 30 March 2023.

All finished art will be included on the Chorus website and will be considered for the 2024 Chorus Cabinet Art calendar, copies of which are sent around the world.

“However, it needs be balanced against the needs of our existing businesses and well managed, so it doesn’t cause a nuisance for the public.”

Bring on Spring

The call is out for local artists in Ashburton District

Chorus Community Relations Manager Jo Seddon says that it makes sense to partner with local councils, as they know their communities best. “We are really pleased that Ashburton District Council wants to work with us again and we’re looking forward to seeing what local artists come up with.

The new locations include sites in Rakaia and Lake Hood; areas within the District that were previously missing permitted sites. The public was consulted on the draft Bylaw in June and the Council received 29 Groupsubmissions.Manager

When the daffodils start to pop up above ground and the Rhododendrons start budding, it’s a wonderful sign that Spring is just around the corner. In the Community Services group at Council, Spring is a time we look forward to.

It’s been another difficult winter with not so nice weather - the second wettest July on record for Ashburton. Our team have certainly been kept on our toes and on top of that, winter illnesses have not been kind. Some positive aspects over winter included a successful Glow in the Park community event to bring us all back together, and recent high levels of participation in our school holiday

“We had some outstanding cabinet murals completed in the region last year, two of which are contenders for the 2023 annual Chorus Cabinet Art Calendar.”

Ms Donaldson said much of the feedback centred around the permitted trading sites on Havelock Street next to Baring Square East and the temporary spots in front of the clock tower where food caravans had been located while the new Library and Civic building, Te Pātaka o kā Tuhituhi and Te Waharoa a Hine Paaka, was under Councillorsconstruction.opted to retain the Havelock St permitted site, and add new permitted sites on each side of the clock tower while keeping the area directly in front of the landmark clear for visitors and people stopping for photographs.

While Covid-19 cases are easing, we are not out of the woods yet. Like the rest of New Zealand Ashburton is short of GPs and it is not going to be an easy fix. Ashburton GP spokeswoman doctor Penny Holdaway has estimated that Ash burton needs at least five more GPs and 10 would be really good. “Our numbers are thinning. Our in come as GPs is far below compared to specialists, and you need to make deci sions much faster than in other speciali ties, so it is hard.”

Given that Ashburton doctors are work ing in a rural area also presents its own set of challenges because more people are seeking a good work-life balance. “Young people demand a work-life bal ance now, and it is harder to provide that in a rural setting.” “We are working above and beyond, it’s not nine till five, or nine till six even,” HoldawayHoldawaysaid.does not think the pandemic has caused the shortage, it has only high lighted a problem that already existed. “We had a big population increase post-earthquakes, and with our agricul ture industry bringing people in, the pop ulation has increased, but the number of GPsHoldawayhasn’t.” said that in rural areas people want their GP to be a doctor for everything, making their required medi cal scope very wide, and one of the hard est jobs in the medical field. “It’s another step in the right direc tion.”Meningitis Foundation spokesman, Gerard Rushton, from Ashburton, is pleased his submission to Parliament last year has now gone to the Health SelectWhileCommittee.he’sfrustrated with how slowly the wheels of democracy turn, he’s en couraged his submission, which calls for Pharmac to provide free meningo coccal vaccines for all college students, is “worthy of merit”. It was lodged with the Petitions Committee last year who then referred it to the Ministry of Health for an eval uation. In turn the ministry’s report “endorsed the basis of our submission and agreed with its intent and direc tion”, Rushton said. He acknowledged the Petitions Committee receives hundreds of sub missions and is grateful his has been sent to the Health Select Committee. The next step for the foundation is to lobby members of the committee to ensure they are informed before mak ing a “We’lldecision.alsotry and make an oral sub mission to them,” he said. Rushton is keen for the committee to support his petition and give direc tion to Pharmac to make vaccinations available to all students.

While Christchurch might not be ideal. That doesn’t mean the New Zealand cause should be lost.Atrans-Tasman bid was moot ed at one point, but with Victoria being given the green light for the 2026 instalment of the games, it would seem a return to Australia four years later is unlikely. As much as it is painful to suggest it, a North Island-based Games could be the best way for New Zealand to get their hands on the event – but only if it’s kept largely away from the concrete jungle of Auckland and based somewhere a bit more New Zea land-like.

Hamilton is a logical option. It’s close to the major centres in the North Island and has a num ber of world class facilities already at its disposal, and the financial input required to bring it over the required mark wouldn’t be as imposing as it would in many otherJustcentres.anhour down the road from Auckland, it does open a world of possibilities to our largest city to host some events within the games, and the adven ture playgrounds at the backdoor within just a few hours’ drive in either direction allows even more possibilities.Andwhile it might not yet be Christchurch’s time to host such an event, it shouldn’t stop the hopes and dreams of it returning at some point in the future. But the paper shuffling needs to stop and the work needs to begin before we can even consider it.

In theory the suggestion that Christchurch could hold the 2030 Commonwealth Games is wonderful.Thereality, however, isn’t quite soFormerpleasant.secretary general of the New Zealand Olympic commit tee, Barry Maister suggested Christchurch could be the logical option to host the Games should New Zealand make a bid in a story published earlier this week in the Guardian. It’sasolid suggestion and perhaps if the past decade had unfolded in a more timely and professional manner then Christchurch would be ready for something of that magnitude, but right now it’s not. And even with the advantage of another eight years under the belt, it is still seemingly unlikely. It’s been a long time since the Christchurch earthquakes, and while the fractured ground is slowly repairing and new advan tages to the South Island’s main centre are under development or in the pipeline, there’s so much still to do. The restrictions of bureaucrati cal red tape and political grandstanding are a significant hold-up, and one only needs to refer to the much-anticipated Christchurch stadium to understand that impact.Thework that would be re quired is significant. Specialised venues for some of the sports would need to be built from scratch, or at least developed further, and the already tightened purse strings of the ratepayers of the region would feel the strain even more as it happens. It has been suggested that Christchurch could be base camp for the games, utilising other world class facilities around the countries for other events such as what unfolded in Birmingham in the past few weeks, but would we really want the heart and soul of the Commonwealth Games to be somewhere where the heads are only just beginning, despite such a significant amount of time, to appear above the rubble?

MarkhamMatt As much as it is painful to suggest it, a North Island-based Games could be the best way for New Zealand to get their hands on the event “

Yanagida’s mother Kayano and younger sister Chiaki arrived in New Zealand from Japan last Friday to be by his“Taikiside. was an excellent jockey but more importantly an exceptional human being,” Yanagida’s manager Ted McLachlan said. “Everyone who knew Taiki loved him and respected him.”

Taiki Yanagida passed away in hospital this week following a race fall at Cambridge. The racing industry is in mourning following the death of popular jockey Taiki Yanagida, who passed away in Wai kato Hospital on Tuesday evening surrounded by friends andYanagidafamily. had been in intensive care with serious head and spinal injuries he suffered in a race fall at Cambridge lastTheWednesday.Japanese-born rider was aboard the Lance O’Sul livan and Andrew Scott-trained Te Atatu Pash when his mount was brought down with 250m left to run and land ed heavily. Knocked unconscious in the accident, Yanagi da was placed in an induced coma at the track before being transported to Waikato Hospital where he fought bravely over the ensuing six days.

Robert and Jenna Dunn unleash a powerful and strong attack on the race tomorrow night with Classie Bri gade and Steel The Show resuming, joining their already race-fit stable mates, Smiffy’s Terror and Heisen berg in the $15,000 event. Ricky May has made an early play for his potential drive in the Cup come November by teaming up with Brian O’Meara to take the drive on Di Caprio.Wearing the colours brought to fame by the great Christian Cullen, the showy pacer is on the comeback after an injury-plagued campaign last season but one in which he showed he’s still capable of footing it with some of the best in the business.

Industry mourns loss of jockey Cup build-up begins tomorrow night

The big guns start coming out to play at Addington Raceway this week as Cup Week and the plethora of riches that come with it begins to emerge on the horizon. The countdown to the second Tuesday in November begins tomor row night at Addington with the run ning of the time-honoured National Handicap, the first step on the path to the big dance in a few months. Many of the heavy-hitters are still to step out publicly, but there’s plenty of early birds looking to get a nibble at the worm before they do.

A universally-liked member of the racing community, nick-named Tiger, the 28-year-old had been riding in New Zealand for five seasons, indentured to O’Sullivan and Scott for the majority of that time. Yanagida made the transition to senior riding ranks earlier this year and finished the season with a total of 42 wins.

“Everyone says if you go, you’re better having a lead-up race there,” he“We’dsaid. look at something like the Ashburton race a couple of weeks before the Cup.” As well as the pacers tomorrow night, the trotters also step it up with the return of Oscar Bonavena in the feature trot on the card. He’s joined by wonderful cam paigner Majestic Man and a host of other good trotters who will have their eye on the first trotting feature of the season, the Banks Peninsula Trotters Cup next month. On the local front tomorrow night, Michael Heenan will be out to con tinue his good run of form early in the night with maiden pacer, Trouble Supreme. Second in both of his last two starts, the son of Prodigal Seel ster is banging on the door of success and gets a good opportunity tomor row night from a handy barrier draw with John Morrison to handle the driving duties.

The Cup itself gained a noted boost this week with the potential inclu sion of talented Australian pacer Lochinvar Art, with a visit to Ashbur ton high on the radar for his trainer and driver, David Moran. He’s in the care of Rodney Lakey at the moment while Moran serves out a suspension, and the Ashburton Fly ing Stakes is high on the agenda for when they arrive on Kiwi shores.

CLUB NEWS 19Ashburton Guardian Thursday, August 11, 2022 Ashburton Combined Friendship Club

■ Athletics Run and Walk Ashburton Gilbert Walk and Larkin Pace held Saturday 6th Au gust 2022 at Argyle Park, Ashburton. This event is normally an open handicap race where the competitors’ start is staggered, however a deci sion was made early due to the heavy rain forecast that the event would still be held but changed to a sealed handicap which meant all participants start ed on go to avoid standing around in the cold and 3kmwet.

The final game was the dogs’ for the taking with professional ring-in David Rush and the Flying Dutchman taking on young Mitch and the winless James, it was in the bag! Mitch jumped out to a quick lead, but David dragged him back to half the game and James managed to get his first win of the last two seasons over a gallant Gaby. The sight of young Jim running round the green, topless, waving his shirt around his head will stick with me for a long time. When the dust settled the pups held the Muttz Nuttz Trophy aloft for the first time with a 12:5 win. The old dogs still sit in the top 4, just, and the pups are sixth, so they both have a shot at making the finals, with the last round on Sunday week at Geraldine. Hope this week is better weather, catch you around the course. Good golfing. Ashburton Lions Club President Manny Sim welcomed every one to the meeting. The Club social event held recently at the Hot Rod Club was very successful and enjoyable for those in attendance. The local rock n roll group provided wonderful entertainment. Lions Charitable Trust is coming up to election time. Two positions will contin ue, two are up for election. Colin Morgan provided the Thought of the Day prior to dinner – When the el derly die, a library is lost and volumes of wisdom and knowledge are gone. Guest speaker Willy Leferink (President of Hinds Lions) discussed the 3000km cycle ride that he and fellow group mem bers did from Cape Reinga to Bluff. They raised money for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter – $50,000 was raised even before they started and they went on to reach a total of $103,319.95. They cycled down 90 Mile Beach at the start of the journey. There were some early setbacks with punctures, but they were deter mined to carry on, having some very tough days (and more punctures!) along the Theyway.encountered some amazing NZ scenery across a variety of terrain. They were able to link with existing well known cycle trails as well. The jet boat ride on the Whanganui River was an es pecially memorable part of the North Is land. 180km was the furthest they rode in a day – albeit on flat ground. From Picton they rode to Franz Josef, riding through some amazing country as they travelled on to Wanaka, the Crown Range and Queenstown before heading on to Bluff. 40 per cent of the journey was on as phalt. 30 per cent on gravel and 30 per cent on cycle tracks. The meeting continued with Tail Twisters – our monthly fines and then raffles be fore the evening was concluded.

The Warehouse sponsored Canterbury Doubles and Singles were held in terri ble conditions over the weekend. Wet weather gear was out in force but some of that was still not enough to keep players warm and dry. Hot soup and the warmth of the club rooms gave a brief respite, but we were soon out again. There was a break on Sunday morning when the sun was shining, but that soon changed with a cold and wet southerly blast. The first three places in the Dou bles were won by out-of-town teams, with Francie Osborn and Nicky Foden being Consolation runners-up. The Plate was won by Mavis Thompson and her Christchurch partner, with Chris Taylor and her Dunedin partner, Lani Taraunu and Jan Guilford Plate Consolation and runners-up respectively. The Bowl was won by Neville Bensdorp and his Dun edin partner. In the Singles our very own Adelys Taraunu was the victor, with Neville Bensdorp runner-up. The Plate runner up was Ruhal Beharry, and Nicky Foden was runner up to the Plate Conso lation. Congratulations to all our players who did so well in very trying condi tions. Once again, a successful tourna ment hosted by our club. Hopefully the weather allows us some lo cal play this week, but the following two weekends’ players are off to Dunedin for two Triples Tournaments. Remember we play Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday starting about 1pm at 115 Racecourse Road. Equipment and tuition are available.  Ashburton Writers’ Group

Our August meeting was held at Hotel Ashburton. Don and Valmai Kennedy were inducted into the club. Our mini speaker was isolating because of Cov id so we had a quiz compered by Errol.  This provided a light-hearted challenge with the top score sitting on 75%. Alan Andrews spoke about the trip he is organising 27 September to Oamaru and North Otago to raise a useful donation to the Cancer Society. He gave a personal account of the battles he and members of his family have had with cancer. He told us how it affected his family when his brother was diagnosed with cancer as a young man and of his own and his wife’s cancer journey. That is why he wants to pay back. For further information phone Alan on Our0272286290.mainspeaker was Jackie Girvan, chair of the Ashburton Housing Support Trust. Jackie worked with Presbyteri an Support for many years and finding suitable housing for people with limited assets was often a major problem. Presbyterian support helped set up the Ashburton Housing Support Trust and at the time units at Cameron Court be came available. The new trust was very successful in raising a considerable sum of money and some units were bought, refurbished, and are now let out as af fordable community housing. More of the Cameron Court units have since been acquired and eventually all the units will be available as community housing.   The Trust is now constructing 17 new units in Mona Square, on land leased from the council, and formerly occupied by 8 Council pensioner flats. The new units will be available to older people with limited assets at an affordable rent al. Already there are 25 people are on the wait list. The units will be mainly oc cupied by single people but there could be up to four occupied by couples. The Trust will own and manage the new units and will be responsible for selecting ten ants. The land and the units revert to the Council in 50 years. The project has been greatly helped by substantial private donations, communi ty grants, and support by local business es. When this project is finished the Trust hopes to be able to do similar projects on other council land. Meetings second Tuesday of month, 9.30am Hotel Ashburton. Visitors wel come. Phone Joe 0274 339 018. Ashburton Golf Club A wee bit of a washout last weekend. 15 hardy souls started out in the morning, but with no let-up in the rain, the course was deemed unplayable around 10am and closed. The DCL Cup, which was a three-round stroke game has now been made a tworound game with the final round a week on ThisSaturday.Saturday we are playing round five of the Club Champs qualifying, a stroke round off the blue tees. The grades have been set after round four. They should be posted very soon, so you know where you sit in your grade and what you need to do to either improve your seeding or get yourself into the top 16.

Vice President Julie welcomed members to the July meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group. The quotation was read by Stacey – “To write means more than pretty words on a page. The act is to share part of your soul with the world” The discussion point was from a book called The Writing Class – Story and plot are not synonymous. The story is the what, the plot is the how of the story. The assignment was “You wake up from a six month coma”.  Mem bers wrote of being groggy and hungov er, car accident, trickle of sobs, in limbo, lockdown – ultimate universe, stiletto heels and programme termination. The instant exercise was “I put my hand in the bag”. Members spoke of phone volume, cut hand, sharp knife, slimy chapstick and token. The August assignment is “Begin a Story with a character who has lost something important to them”. Visitors are welcome, please phone Rae at 308-8927.

Blind And Low Vision New Zealand –Ashburton This is the 60th year for our committee and members. When Covid allows us to, we do plan to celebrate this very special milestone. Once again it has curtailed our outings and meetings. We have held five Committee meetings for our year June 2021 – to July 2022 but only at two meetings were we able to have our members present. Fortunately, The Christmas Lunch did go ahead at our rooms at The Plains, where we are well looked after by Lorayne Oakley. The Rotary club of Ashburton did man age to put on their 59th concert for our members in July last year. If one of the players gets infected, they will hopefully, have a chance to get the game played on a dif ferent day before the next round. Round of 16 knockout games kick off on August 27 and play through September. Good Pennantsluck.was almost a full washout on Sunday, all the leagues cancelled with courses closed except for the big grudge clash at Rakaia, but we don’t want to talk about that, so that will do for this week! Ok, I will tell you. The game set off in beautiful sunshine with no wind, after 8 holes the southerly kicked in, then 2 holes later the rain and sleet was coming in sideways. Still the silly buggers played on. In the top game Blair and old Spud both jumped out to leads over Jordy and Tom, but the pups held their nerve and fought back well winning both the games on the 18th, with the old dogs taking the fourball so 4:1 to the pups. In game 2, Dylan took Paddy apart in the first 10 holes to be 6 up and Tim was just leading young Spud. When the rain and sleet started coming in sideways Paddy thought he was back home in Yorkshire and had a mini revival, but Dylan was too far ahead and took the game 3 and 2. Tim and Spud battled to the end with Timmy taking it on the 18th and the dogs snuck the fourball so 3:2 to the dogs 6:4 to the pups overall.

It’s the last chance saloon; do what’s required and return next week – don’t though, and your Mid Canterbury Netball Premier season is Tonight’sover.action marks the fi nal week of the pool-play stage of the championship round for this season and it’s all still to play for, in one way or another, across the board at the EA Networks Centre. For some sides, it’s a good week.Their final berth is booked, and it’s all about continuing to build momentum towards the knockouts. But for others, it’s an all-out race to the finish line to claim a top four Premierspot.1is all sorted; Celtic, United, Hampstead and Methven will return to the court next week, but tonight’s matches are still vitally important in finding out who will face who when the dust settles from the round. Almost unbelievably, given their dominance this year, Celt ic could be knocked off the top qualifier spot by United if they were to lose to them tonight. Now, Celtic haven’t lost all sea son, so it’s a long bow to draw, but if there’s been one team all year that at times has appeared capa ble of footing it with, and perhaps beating the title favourites then a full-strength and on-song United is it. A Celtic win would see them draw clear as top-qualifier, and leave the door open for Hamp stead to claim second spot if they can beat Methven. If they don’t, it will come down to goal differentials to determine where each team lands. Southern and Mt Somers open the night’s play in Premier 1, in a battle to see who elevates them selves off the bottom of the table to take fifth place in the standings in what should be an intriguing battle between two very evenly matchedPremiersides.2’spuzzle is just messy once you get past the high-flying Allenton, who are assured of top spot.Goal differentials could again come into play with the remain ing five teams all with at least an outside chance of sneaking into the top Celticfour.B, who currently hold down second, can secure their spot with a win against Ashbur ton College A tonight, but even the bottom-placed Methven could lift themselves off the can vas and get above Rakaia if they were to beat them tonight as well.Allenton will play Methven Shearmac in the other match, and even the side who lifted themselves from Premier 3 at the start of this round have a chance if they can topple the competi tion’s leaders in their match-up. In Premier 3, it’s a two-team race for the one remaining spot in the top Hampsteadfour.B and Hampstead Under 18 are assured, as are Ash burton College 10A, which leaves Methven Humm and Ashburton College B fighting for the fourth spot. The side from Methven has the tougher challenge, taking on Hampstead B in the opening game of the night, while Ash burton College B will be heavily favoured to sneak in with points from their match against United B. The Hampstead U18 and Ash burton College 10A match at the end of the night will prove a per fect taste-test, with the two sides looking likely, on form, to play each other again next week in the semi-finals.

Councillor Carolyn Cameron was the driver behind the sug gestion of a need for a steering group, citing the fact that a con siderable amount of time and money was invested into a strat egy, and it was too important to review it every five years without regular checks and updates along theCouncilway. chief executive, Hamish Riach, suggested that it was the role of the councillors to ensure that the strategy was meeting its targets along the way, and that at any point questions could be raised as to its progress with reports provided. The Ashburton District Council’s new Play, Active Recreation and Sport Strategy will focus on an ac tion plan to ensure that Mid Can tabrians enjoy inclusive avenues and have fun while being active. The strategy was adopted late last month by the Council and includes a number of different initiatives and ideas to further enhance sporting opportunities across the district. Input into the strategy was sought first from sporting organ isations from within the region and then from individuals before it was finalised and put in front of the council for adoption. Ashburton District Council community service group man ager, Steve Fabish said that feed back and input was invaluable in coming to reach the final strate gy.“Our community told us that 2022 poses a range of barriers that prevent participation in play, active recreation and sport, so we addressed those aspects when drafting the strategy,” he said. It’s been 12 years since the last strategy was adopted which focused largely on the develop ment and was a key part in the construction of the EA Networks Centre, which opened five years later. That strategy came four years after the first was developed in 2006.The EA Networks Centre fea tures heavily in the latest strat egy as well with the action plan outlining a multi-use sports field development in the area around the centre and also the develop ment of sand-based facilities for sports such as beach volleyball andOtherhandball.ideas also included look ing to piloting women-only swim and gym sessions and a stronger focus on playground accessibil ity.A new fee structure for the EA Networks Centre also featured in the“Keyplan.goals in the strategy are based around accessibility, par ticipation, a strong collaborative sector, and awareness,” Fabish said. The strategy also homed in on a number of issues that were hindering the recreational sector currently which included Cov id-19, Mid Canterbury’s ageing population and also its diverse population, the continued devel opment of digital transformation and the overall cost to participate in recreational and sporting op portunities.Theadoption of the strategy wasn’t without its battles around the council table, with some councillors adamant that in or der to seeing it through success fully a steering group was needed for accountability and to meas ure progress.

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Life often meets your expectation. This is why you avoid seeing things as dire or less than optimum. Truly, there is much to work with in your environment today. These strange conditions might even be ideal.
