“I’m very proud of our record and wonder if any other primary school in the country can match thatHe’snumber?”triedto find out by contacting the New Zealand Rugby Museum in Palmerston North, but was told their records only list secondary schools. If Jock wants to find out, he’d have to ring thousands of primary schools up and down New Zealand.

“In a provincial town we must be unique. We were just ordinary bloody kids who went to Borough up to standard four,” he said.

Jack Kelly Ross Smith Bruce McPhail

Ross had another reason why seven ABs should be featured. “By having my photo included I’m hoping it will inspire a boy or girl attending Borough to pursue a sporting career themselves,” he said.“The pursuit of excellence is something Jack Kelly talked about all those years ago.” Ross must have been tempted to include an eighth AB. Jock’s wife, Christine, is a former Silver Fern and their son, Isaac, currently playing in Japan, was an AB in 2009 and Maori AB from 2007-2010.Isaacwent to Lagmhor, a small country school, which is now affiliated to Borough. Sadly it was a stand-alone school when he attended. Jock will keep delving but, in the meantime, he’d like to hear if any other school can match Borough’s impressive record. He’s quietly hoping no school can.

record HopwoodMalcolm

“With only 1300 All Blacks ever, our record has to be unique.”

It started with five All Blacks, and has now grown to seven. About 20 years ago four former All Blacks attended a reunion at the Sinclair Centre, and realised they had something in common besides the black jersey. They’d all attended Borough School in Ashburton. In addition the widow of a fifth All Black, Alan Robilliard, was also in attendance. At the function, one of their number Jack Kelly, an All Black from 1949-54 and former principal of Takapuna Grammar, talked about the importance of team sport. Basking in reflected glory that they’d reached the summit of one of NZ’s major sports, they decided to pursue it further. Five ABs from one primary school had to be some sort of record and, one of their number, Bruce McPhail, a 1959 All Black, decided it was worth commemorating.Hequickly discovered a further AB had been overlooked. Ross Smith, stalwart of Canterbury’s Ranfurly Shield era and an All Black against Australia in 1955, also grew up in Ashburton and attended Borough. It brought the number to six. It was worth investigating further. Could they find another? Over several years McPhail kept inquiring but, when he fell ill, he handed the project over to Jock Ross, a 1981 All Black. Ross decided the best idea was to frame all six photos and hang them in a large billboard on the wall at Borough School’s reception. But then he was told of a further and more recent AB who’d attended. Adam Thomson, a 2008 to 2012 All Black, who helped to win the 2011 Rugby World Cup, was a former student. While Jock could keep on researching, enough was enough, and publicising the milestone might encourage someone else to uncover another elusive AB who won the silver fern. But, in Borough School’s 150th anniversary year, Jock wants to challenge New Zealand.

It’s time for college to go solar

“I think it is a worthy investment, es pecially with our world facing climate change, it can be an education opportunity to teach students about the environment and renewable source energy,” Lim said. Mount Hutt College principal Jack Sax on was really impressed in the work that the students were doing. “I was initially involved in the project, but stepped back because I wanted the students to drive it,” Saxon said. Saxon is not new to solar panels at schools, as his last school Kaitaia College had just installed the largest solar pan el installation for a New Zealand School when he was principal in 2019. Other Methven businesses have already made the switch to solar including Meth ven Motors and Opuke Hot Pools. Keeping the lights on: Mount Hutt College has begun fundraising to get the school on solar power and solar panel team member Jarne Lim wants the community to get on board.

Mount Hutt College will be going green as it begins to fundraise money to get the school solar powered. The entirely student-driven project has been two years in the making before be ing announced publicly as they begin the fundraising drive. Mount Hutt College head student and one of the solar team, Jarne Lim, said it will be a great opportunity for the com munity to get behind. “ We are looking to lower our carbon footprint and contribute to the communi ty. Any excess power will be sold back to the grid, and we can use that money with in education programmes.”

Don’t connect a portable generator to your mains switchboard, via wall outlet or by making illegal alterations to your house wiring. The metal surfaces in your home could become live or electricity could feed back into the network. Keep your family and our network safe - hire a registered electrician to install the correct power inlet. You may connect appliances via an extension cord through an open window or door to a safety protected multi box. Please don’t use the portable generator indoors. It may cause a fire and you risk carbon monoxide poisoning from the build-up of fumes. Call EA Networks on 0800 430 460 for help and advice.

The team has calculated that they would need 220 solar panels to power the school comfortably. Lim said there will be a tran sition period from their current system to solar“It will be a transition, we are still going to use our current provider for now. “This will just be the starting point,” Lim said.To help raise the $200,000 required to fund the project. The team are planning an auction for local businesses to buy naming rights for a solar panel in Septem ber.Lim thinks it is time for other schools to look at their own carbon footprint and what they can do to reduce it.

Councillors elected, not appointed

Te Ropu Tuia co-chair Liz Brown said the councillors will be appointed through a rigorous process designed to select the best candidates with the right skills and experience from more than 74,000 Ngai Tahu whanau members.Applications are already open to all whanau members aged 18 or older she said.

Calling all Hinds farmers: You’re invited to take some time away from the farm and lean on a gate.Next weekend Hinds Mechanical Services is hosting an event for locals with some help from Farming Families, an organisation which helps rural communities.FarmingFamilies spokesman Bruce Taylor, said they were approached by the Hinds Mechanical Services team some timeAndago.with help from Farming Families, the Hinds company will be putting on some much needed kai and a mental debrief for hard-working Hinds locals.

A former Environment Canterbury councillor maintains councillors should be elected, not appointed.Abillallowing Ngai Tahu to appoint two voting councillors to the Canterbury Regional Council was passed earlier this month. That means that while the election campaign has begun for candidates looking to fill 14 of the 16 vacancies on the council, the other two seats will be appointed by Ngai Tahu independently from ECan.Sitting Ashburton District councillor Angus McKay, also a former ECan councillor, supports the continuation of Ngai Tahu having a place at the table and having full voting rights. He just believes their representatives need to be elected democratically, not appointed. “They are probably going to be very good councillors. It is how they are getting there that is my problem,” McKay said.

Currently two Tumu Taiao (mana whenua experts) provide advice to council on behalf of mana whenua, but do not have voting rights. As of October 8, the two appointees will be fully fledged councillors which Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu Kaiwhakahaere Lisa Tumahai said will “only enhance the council’s decision making”.

Hinds Mechanical Services wanted to give back to the community who have been working really hard over the winter season, Taylor said. “We jumped at the chance,” heTaylorsaid. and the team will be taking their new trailer barbecue out to Hinds. They will be serving up burgers and drinks with some help from ANZCO, who have donated meat for the event.

Craig Wiggins (Wiggy), a rural health campaigner and farmer wellbeing spokesperson, will be putting on a smaller version of his workshop known as “Lean on a gate and talk to a mate”. But it will be more personable and intimate than his usual mental health workshop. And come rain or shine they will have the barbecue on. The event will be on from 11am to 2pm next Saturday at Hinds Mechanical Services.

An interview panel made up of mana whenua representatives from the 10 Waitaha (Canterbury) Papatipu Runanga will review the applications and interview a shortlist of potential candidates. Mana whenua will select their preferred candidates and Ngai Tahu will then notify ECan and publicly announce the two councillors once the process is complete.“The checks and balances we’ve put in place during this process will ensure the best people are appointed to the roles and they will take the responsibility and privilege of being a Ngai Tahu Environment Canterbury Councillor extremely seriously,” Brown said.

Just last week they received another new aircraft, a Strikemaster gifted by the New Zealand Air Force, which Moore said completed the set.

The museum has its 50 year anniversary at the end of 2024 so “it would be quite nice to have something, if not finished, at least started by then,” Moore said. The looming hurdle is finding the money, he said, and its major fundraiser will finally go ahead at Labour weekend with the Militaria and Aviation Extravaganza after previously being postponed due to Covid restrictions.Theexpansion is required as it is running out of space to house its growing number of aircraft, he said.

It’s nearly time to dust off your dancing shoes for this year’s biggest fundraising ball. This will be the Pretty in Pink committee’s third attempt to hold the ball, after Covid stuck its oar in the way, according to committee member, Carolyn Bond-Hood.Butthisyear’s ball, to be held on October 29 at Trott’s Garden, has been harder to sell.

“We currently have design plans drawn and a lot of the paperwork to get through. The plan is to turn it all into one big complex.”

Third time lucky for ball plans

“We now have one of every type of jet aircraft the New Zealand Air Force has ever owned.”Themuseum is a key drawcard to the site but for the council’s plan to come to fruition, that the airport pays its own way, it needs more.

“It would be nice to have a bit more traffic, a bit more stuff going on and gather a bit more in landing fees.”

“It’s always been really easy to sell tickets (in previous years),” Bond-Hood said. Bond-Hood is hoping the committee haven’t missed out on letting people know that the event is definitely going ahead this year, since they are selling the tickets online. So far three balls have been held, starting in 2016, with the $70,000 raised going to the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society and cancer research.

“The ball is a biennial event, with a smaller event like a high tea in intervening years,” Bond-Hood said. Due to the generosity of ticket buyers and sponsors from the 2020 ball, Pretty in Pink even raised $10,000 from the cancelled event. But this year’s ball has a lot to Theoffer.band the Bubblemen will be performing, and ticket holders will receive a hot meal, and ladies will be given a glass of bubbles on arrival. “It’s an opportunity to dress up and help look after our community.“Weallknow someone affected by cancer,” Bond-Hood said. The committee is hoping to raise around $20,000 from the ball.Tickets are $85 per person.

The museum has a planned $1.2 million project to build a new hangar complex which has been factored into the Ashburton District Council’s 30-year draft plan for theTheairport.plan is to develop the airport so that it can be financially independent and not require a ratepayer subsidy in the future.

Building committee chairman, Owen Moore, said that “from the museum perspective, we are comfortable with [the plan]”.Moore can see the positives in introducing more users to the site, making it even more of a destination.

The museum’s major project is in the paperwork stage, he said, which includes a feasibility study.

Owen Moore and David Welsh are looking forward to the Ashburton Aviation Museum’s planned expansion.

The council is planning to expand the number of recreational hangars, add more commercial hangars for the likes of skydiving and flight schools, aircraft.buildinglivewherehangar-homesandpeopleinthesameastheir

Their plans involve joining the museum’s existing buildings, adding another big building and a new reception area.

Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade member Sammy Ridge is facing what could be her biggest hurdle so far, her first Sky Tower Challenge, next week. Ridge and five other Methven volunteers are to race up the Sky Tower in full firefight ing gear to raise essential funds, and spread awareness for Leukaemia and Blood Can cer New Zealand (LBC). They have to run up 51 flights of stairs. “It’s pretty nerve-wracking, it is not your average challenge,” Ridge said. So far the team have raised nearly $5000, with Ridge raising over $2000 herself, but they are not done yet. This week Ridge and the brigade will be shaking buckets around the Methven dis trict in a last minute effort to raise more funds for next Saturday’s Sky Tower Chal lenge.OnWednesday Ridge, who has only been a volunteer firefighter for the past two years, took the fire truck and a red bucket down to Access Road. “I went to where Mr Whippy hangs out, and shook the bucket,” Ridge said. In an hour, the bucket was filled with $270.She has been training since November for the climb. “It’s good to get myself out of the norm,” Ridge said. She also performed a dance number with all her fire kit on, and raised $300 from do ing it. “I’m a bit of a looney, but it worked,” she said.Ridge is hoping to organise an open day for children to check out the Methven fire station next week, as another way to raise some money for the cause.

So suddenly the local body elections have got interest ing. Real interesting. From looking like it would be a bit of a yawn fest and a nonevent, a flurry of late nominations before yesterday’s deadline means the Ashburton District elections in October have sparked into life. That’s especially so in the Ash burton ward, with 12 candidates vying for five spots around the council table. And with existing councillors Stuart Wilson, Angus McKay, Dianne Rawlinson and John Fal loon all stepping down, there will be a new-look at city hall come OctoberHonestly,8. that’s not a bad thing. Fresh faces bring fresh views and thoughts, and Ashburton could certainly do with that to unlock the potential that clearly exists, but has yet to be realised. National attention will un doubtedly focus on the efforts of one half of New Zealand’s famous singing twin sisters, Dame Lynda Topp, who is standing in the West ern Ward against incumbents, deputy mayor Liz McMillan, and RodgerVenturingLetham.into politics is a mas sive challenge at the best of times but Dame Lynda’s decision to stand is even more so. Why? Be cause she and sister, Dame Jools, have both undergone months of gruelling treatment fighting breastRegardless, cancer.Dame Lynda seems certain to mount a serious challenge simply because of her telling public profile, which can be a built-in political advantage in any Prominentelection.Bluff-based broad caster Marcus Lush will be another hoping his profile and popularity will swing things his way when he contests what is looming as the most fascinating election nationally – that for the Invercargill mayoralty. Lush, who stepped into local body politics last year when he easily won a by-election for a spot on the Invercargill council, has joined eight other candidates standing for the top job. They include long-serving incumbent Sir Tim Shadbolt, who has been elected mayor of Invercargill for an almost hard to believe nine terms, but who is clearly not the force of old. And a profile of a different sort has spiced up the Auckland may oralty, with Hamilton adult entertainer Lisa Lewis making a saucy bid for the super city hot seat. With a campaign slogan, “Let’s Erect Auckland Together”, Lewis has already caught attention. He had a similar op portunity in the last test of 2021 against France in Paris when he was handed the No 10 jersey. What caught my eye this week

Another local punching above her weight: Often when I’m presenting the Young DJs with their Diplomas in Deejayology I’ll say something along the lines of: “If you want to be Prime Minister take this to Wellington and I’m sure doors will open”. Yesterday I had a former Young DJ back in the studio, she’s not entering the world of politics (you’d need to be a bit nuts to do that), but she’s off representing New Zealand on the world stage. Tayla Davidson is off to the Karate Commonwealth Champs in Birmingham next month. She is very hopeful of a spot on the podium.Thefirst fight she has is a financial one, as you can imagine it’s not a cheap exercise getting her over there next month. Where do you get awesome service in Mid Canty?”

A whole bunch of messages came flowing in and lots of awesome local businesses got a very deserving shout-out. Three messages stood out to me. Tracey – Well I would have to say, NEUMANN’S TYRES Methven, awesome guy, told me to go and get a coffee while he fixed my tyre, so jumped in my ute and oops I had no money, jumped out n told him, hang on, he said, he went n grabbed $10 and said, here take this. Wow, now that has never happened to me before. I had a lovely coffee n also, great service @ CAFE 131, then I finally found $10 in the bottom of my ashtray, so on my return I happily handed it back, such a great way to start your morning! Wow generosity and service up there – well done to Methven.

Geoffrey – After doing our fundraising, I would have to say any small business in Ashburton they all went out of their way to help Lisa – To be fair . . . almost every shop in Ashburton!

The Ashburton Aviation Museum, with its proud 50th anniversary looming in 2024, has plans for a large new development, more than doubling its existing superhangar footprint. How many people understand that as well as telling the important story of the airfield’s role during World War Two, that therein lies one of the most representative collections of early generation military jets to be found in the Southern Hemisphere?Ashburton is growing up. Fast.

Three years ago, August 2019, in this very column I floated the idea of Hangar Homes as part of the on-going development of Ashburton Airport.Iwaspleasantly surprised by the encouraging feedback at the time and am now particularly delighted that there are formal proposals for such a thing, and more!Ashburton Airport is an asset brimming with potential for our district. From its early beginnings, on through a full-blown training aerial camp as No 2 Elementary Flying Training School during World War Two, and beyond, it has been through periods of extreme activity and near dormancy, but since the 80s has continued to grow. It is home to long term tenant The Mid Canterbury Aero Club, is the base of the Ashburton Aviation Museum, (one of Australasia’s finest collections) and also a myriad of private hangar owners and even a licensed aircraft mechanical engineer. It is close to town, but not annoyingly so, is blessed with four runways offering eight options for take off and landing direction, and sits outside the busy controlled Christchurch airspace, but is entirely commutable.Inshort, Ashburton Airport offers simply the best airfield venue close to the South Island’s busiest city. Hands down. West Melton and Rangiora fall way short. One thing that has not been possible under existing regulations is the ability to live “onsite”.The thorough proposals that have been worked through by council staff have been worked up with continual consultation of existing and potential users, along with a careful consideration of residents in the adjoining area. The proposals allow for the construction of hangar homes in one precinct, a commercial precinct along Seafield Road, and further recreational hangars in an as-yet undeveloped area in the north-east airfield corner. Already of course, steady improvements to the asset have been happening with the successful relocation and repurposing of the former Information Centre building from the Ashburton CBD. This has now given the Mid Canterbury Aero Club a facility to be immensely proud of and sits alongside a recently completed new hangar for the aero club. The new clubrooms are also a defacto terminal if you like, an epicenter for the airfield. There has also been considerable investment in refuelling facilities with both AvGas and Jet A1 dispensed from a brand new facility.

By Malcolm Hopwood When Paul Hopwood and his sister, Trish, left Ashburton, they’d prepared for a lifetime of adventure. They enjoyed success working for others, but even more working for themselves.

“I’m in the personal development industry. It’s a business I can manage from six different locations.”Even Ashburton, and that means she can work from home more often.

From wealth to dependence, Trish changed her focus in 2009. For 10 years she worked as care manager for a home care agency.

The next 16 years was a life of movement, nursing, family and encountering Mid Cantabrians on their OEs. It was exciting but, by 2002, she wanted a new life and, with her children, found it in London.Asacare manager for an agency, her task was to send nurses out to private hospitals in the city or to wealthy clients around the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Trish often had to visit them to ensure her nurses were suitable. One of her favourites lived in a castle in Cornwall. “It was fun times learning about the rich and famous, with old and new money,” she“Whethersaid. they were Lord or Lady, our job was to give them a quality of life in later years. I often worked 60 hours a week but we’d learned a strong work ethic from dad. Hard work produces results.” She tells one story of a private client who commuted between New York and a London hotel. She fell ill in England and was denied a flight back to the US. Trish provided an escort who sailed with the client on the Queen Mary from Southampton to New York. “I then had to fly the nurse back,” she said. “My clients loved antipodean nurses, especially those from Australia and New Zealand. Others came from South Africa and were driven from the Ritz or Carlton to their destination.”

“I provide them with online business solutions that gives them the lifestyle, freedom and flexibility to start something new.

“It was really rewarding, caring for people at home. There are very few retirement homes in London and nursing homes are generally full,” she said. But it was tough work. “I managed an office staff of 60 with 450 care workers and 500 clients. We provided 12,000 hours of care a week.”

“I had to know where my workers were to fit a jigsaw of hours andButpeople.”ittook a toll on Trish’s life. She worked from 7am to 11pm, 365 days a year with one Christmas Day on and one off. Three years ago, while at the top of the agency, she resigned to have a gap year most people enjoy decades earlier.

He had to explain to staff that many artists didn’t want to talk to them so they needed to do their job and leave. But he found Adele different from most. By then he was General Manager, Hospitality for Western Australia, with the task of catering for 65,000 patrons. “She was amazing, very polite, generous and easy to look after,” he said. Paul recently decided to downsize. He’s started his own business as an event and hospitality consultant in Western Australia with key clients throughout the state. “I’ve been very lucky. I’ve had a privileged career,” he said. “But when you have an opportunity to give back, you do it.” That means being active in a number of charities, including a founding member of the Hawaiian Ride for Youth which has raised $30 million towards the prevention of self-harm and suicide. Paul, at 53, is a family man, married to Valerie, and very content with his life. “I’ve been very successful in business and in love,” he said. The sign on the bus said Perth and she hopped on it in Queensland. Sixty-seven hours later it arrived. “It was cheap, great fun and a party bus full of Kiwis and people from England and Canada,” she said. “It spurred on my love of travel and adventure.”

“My corporate days were over and my daughters were living in three different countries,” she said.Trish travelled to the Far East, Australia and New Zealand and only this year settled into her present position, one which lifts experiences from her previous life.

“I’m a digital marketing nomad,” she said with her laptop and cell on the table beside her. “I support women looking for an exit strategy from their corporate life.

While working as a chef in the Queensland mines, Jasmine met her now husband, Laurie. “I loved bringing all the classic Kiwi treats to the miners. “I wasn’t overly confident at the time,” she said. But after getting her adult braces off, she celebrated by heading to Townsville, where she had a pin-up photoshoot. “It made me feel like a million bucks,” Jasmine said. That moment was a game-changer.And18months later, the couple took a trip to Las Vegas and got married.Unfortunately there was no Elvis, but their ceremony had the Grand Canyon in the background.

Jasmine Aitken, aka Miss Jazzylicious, is bringing her love of anything and everything vintage to the wider South Island at the New Zealand Vintage Festival inBornSeptember.inAshburton, where her lifelong love of vintage fashion started to grow, she has been obsessed with anything vintage since she was able to walk. “It started when I was little. We would watch 1950s films featuring John Wayne, Elvis Presley, and Rita Hayward,” Jasmine said. Those classic Hollywood glamour films ignited her passion. Jasmine’s mother, a country singer and pianist, was heavily involved in the Mid Canterbury music scene when Jasmine was growing up and started watching more films featuring her favourite icon Marilyn Monroe. “I fell in love with Marilyn Monroe. And with her taking her ukuleleJasmineeverywhere.”grewupnext to the Plains Railway Museum, where her father worked for the Ashburton District Council. “I grew up next to the Tinwald Domain where the museum is now.”Asa youngster, she was introduced to op shopping by her mother as a way to make ends meet.“It’s funny, people used to look down on op shopping, but now it’s cool,” Jasmine said. She is now an avid bargain hunter herself, keeping an eye out for any vintage pieces, including, art, jewellery, homeware, clothes, shoes and fur coats. “Yet it’s funny, because I have always been a tom-boy at heart.” As Jasmine approached adulthood, she decided to make her money through her other passion, food. After studying to be a chef at Waikato Polytechnic in her late teens, Jasmine decided to take her skills over the ditch.

Jasmine’s mother was based in Nashville, Tennessee, at the time, and living her dreams up on stage in the birthplace of country music.In2017, after spending a few years in Australia and doing their fair share of travelling the globe, the couple decided it was time to comeTheyhome.nowlive on the family livestock farm on the outskirts of Mayfield in Ruapuna with their four-year-old daughter, Kacela. They decided to name her Kacela as the name means hunter and her dad is a passionate hunter. He has more hunting clothes than Jasmine has vintage shoes. Kacela may mean hunter, but she has already taken after her mother, and is collecting her own wardrobe pieces. A year-and-a-half ago Jasmine decided to up the ante and was dressing and being photographed as a ‘pin-up girl’, suspenders and all.“I had a vision and I went with it,” she said. And it has paid off. She won Miss Retro Classic at Muscle Car Madness in January, and this year was crowned Miss Pin Up New Zealand 2022, Jasmine all glammed up with her roller curls and one of her many vintage fur coats.

There will be three separate parts to the pageant, 10 contestants from all over the country will be performing throughout the event so they will present day wear, summer wear and evening wear. And the top two contestants get to go to Australia. “A lot of them will be sewing their own dresses. It inspires me to start sewing my own as well,” Jasmine said. Over the years, she has employed help from seamstress extraordinaire, Emma Brockhurst from Badger Hill in Ashburton, to make her custom Hollywood dresses to compete in. Last month, in preparation for the festival, Jasmine faced her fears and impersonated Marilyn Monroe, singing on stage with her ukulele in Geraldine at a mini version of Ukulele fest. There is no stopping Miss Jazzylicious now. One of Jasmines favourite pieces of jewellery that she found at an Ashburton op shop, which retails for $300 brand new.

WEEKEND FOCUS 17 only a month later. “To pay for my vintage style while I raise Kacela, I decorate cakes for friends on the side and help Laurie pluck and gut possums,” Jasmine said. She does this while also studying horticulture through the Open Polytechnic, and swapping her stilettos for gumboots and helping out on the farm. “It’s great, you just have to film your practical assignments and send them in,” Jasmine said. But Jasmine’s main project at the moment is helping promote the New Zealand Vintage Festival next month in Lincoln. “The pageant within the festival is called Miss Vintage Australasia.”

A day at the magistrate’s court back in 1878

“The police were sorry to have to use violence, but it was some times absolutely necessary.” It is hard to judge wheth er this was the case or not in this particular instance just by reading this newspaper report, but the fact that Mr. Wallace was released with a warning after claiming that he was unneces sarily attacked certainly raises a few questions Other offences

“Prisoner denied having been drunk, and accused the police of unnecessary violence when putting him in the cell.

Was the severity of each individual case judged on a subjective basis? It’s hard to say. Perhaps the sincerity of an offender’s apology factored into the equation, if any was given at Oneall. fellow by the name of James Main Wallace was report ed to have found himself in a spot of bother on the previous Sunday, when he was appre hended by the police for . . . you guessed it: Accordingdrunkenness!totheHerald, “the constable said the prisoner kicked like a maniac, and was ‘the most contrary man he has seen in his twenty-years’ experi ence as a policeman”.

Cox stated that he had “been in drink, had attacked Newman in a fit of temper, had never previously been before a Court of Justice, had borne a good character throughout a long service in a Regiment of Hussars, and hoped he would be leniently dealt with”. If it wasn’t already glaringly obvious that Cox had never been in trouble before his ludicrous character defence, then it defi nitely was afterwards!

“Two witnesses claimed that the man had only consumed one glass of brandy, surely not enough to intoxicate a man, but the police sergeant rebuked this by stating that ‘when he went into the lock-up, on hearing the noise made by the prisoner and the police, he felt satisfied that the prisoner was drunk’. “He was not anxious, however, for a conviction, and his worship dismissed the prisoner with an admonition.”Inreference to Mr. Wallace’s claim of unnecessary violence, one of the constables who apprehended him claimed that “many intoxicated prisoners struggled and fought, injuring themselves and being injured, and when sober accused the police of unnecessary violence.

By Connor Lysaght In previous heritage pages we have looked at historic crim inal cases ranging from petty theft to first degree murder and everything in between, focusing chiefly on the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s.The majority of cases which that were brought before Ashburton’s resident magistrate in the early days were tame and inconsequential, drunk-and-disorderlies,mainlyfines for stray animals, etcetera. However, the volume of crimi nal offences that were processed on any given day often rose to a surprising number, giving the impression that little old Ashburton was less peaceful than we think it was in the late nineteenth century. On Friday, March 22, 1878 an ordinary session of court was held and several cases were brought before the resident magistrate, Mr. A Le G. Camp bell. The results of the court proceedings were published in the Ashburton Herald, and this report gives us a good look at an interesting and busy day at the magistrate’s court.

Two men, James William Newman and Alfred Cox, were brought into court and accused of fighting in the street. New man’s charge was withdrawn, but Cox was also charged with being drunk-and-disorderly and using foul language, and he was fined 10 shillings.

One last and much more con cerning case was brought before the magistrate that day. A tall and “powerful” man by the name of Frederick Howard was charged with assaulting Agnes McLaughlan, a servant who was employed by New Inn proprietor Mr. J. F. Butler. Agnes was harrassed several times by Howard until she was forced to draw a knife and call Esther Butler, Mr. Butler’s wife, for“Estherprotection.Butler was also about, and had gone between prisoner and her mother, when he threat ened to put the old lady’s head through the board, and treated her to language which was not decent, and was the reverse of complimentary.”Youhavetogive the Herald credit for just how squeamishly they described Howard’s lan guage towards Esther. For his deplorable behaviour, Howard was given a choice of either paying £5 or spending two weeks in jail. Do you agree with some of the punishments doled out by the magistrate on March 22, 1878? Would you have taken a friend to court for stealing a mucky old jacket?Should Frederick Howard have had a harsher sentence? One Mr John Hurley was charged with stealing a coat, which was owned by a farmer from Wakanui by the name of Mr. David Wilson. The coat in question was of such poor quality that it was seen only of use as “a change to any of the men on the farm who got wet on a rainy day” and so the case was dismissed outright. It was also evident that the whole case was merely the result of a petty disagreement between theThetwo.Herald said regarding the debacle: “The whole case was a miserable affair, as shameful as it was malicious, and one that ought never to have been brought into Court. It was trivial in the extreme, for a man could not be found in that Court, he was sure, who would take the coat in a gift. His Worship dismissed the case, but refused counsel’s request for costs.”

FinalWhistle calling time on a week of sport The Guardian’s sports wrap After wondering whether he’d ever be able to play rugby again following a serious hand injury, Tyler Blackburn is back on the paddock and ready to rip into action for Mid Canterbury this year. FULL STORY: P21 Back in the game The semi-finalists P23 Games highlights P22 The North awaits P23 20 Ashburton Guardian Saturday, August 13, 2022

“Pete Manson came and had a chat to me after that game and it was from about then I started wondering if it might be possible.“Buteven then, I hadn’t been picked in the initial squad, or been a part of any of their trainings or sessions, so I wasn’t too worried.”Aninvitation to come along to a training to see what the squad was all about this year set the wheels in motion, and head coach John Sherratt recognised straight away that Blackburn was someone he wanted as part of his team this year.

Getting selected into the squad was one thing, but to see his name listed as co-captain alongside Adam Williamson was the biggest shock of all. “That one floored me a bit to be honest, I didn’t expect that. “I thought my days of that kind of stuff were over, you know. “I was in that spot a couple of years ago before my injury and I guess I’d just figured it was the end of it. “But to be a co-captain is a huge honour and to do it with Adam is cool too. He’s a man of very few words is Fridge, but he leads by example, and it’s going to be exciting to lead the team with him this year.” Blackburn was a part of the management team last season for the Heartland campaign, but is excited to get a little more involved this year with an almost new-look squad.“There’s a lot of new faces there, a lot. But some good experienced guys in the mix“It’stoo.pretty exciting, I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve.”

Hope is about the only thing Tyler Blackburn has lived off for the past few years. A debilitating injury, in which he tore all the muscle away from the bone on his wrist, had torn him away from playing the game he loved, and at more than one point along the journey, he wondered if he’d even ever be able to play again. Surgery was the first step, and it helped to repair the damage done. But that was only half the battle. The long road back in recovery was daunting, frustrating and at times mentally challenging. With hour upon hour spent working to rebuild the strength in his wrist and hand and plenty of time in the gym to maintain his overall fitness levels, there reached a point about two months ago where Blackburn felt like he was ready to see what his capabilities were. “Mentally and physically, I felt ready to go, but it was all up to the therapist and my surgeon as to whether or not it could happen,” he said. Still a part of the Methven senior set-up, just not as a player, Blackburn was intent on pushing his case with coaches Shane Enright and Jason Kjestrup, but even they seemed sceptical at times about his ability to “Gettingreturn. that news that I had the all-clear to play again was pretty satisfying; even if I didn’t get back on the paddock at that point, I was pretty stoked to at least know I could.”Fifteen minutes for the Methven Senior B side started the official journey back, but an outstanding 80-minute shift the following week against old foe Southern told the halfback all he needed to know.

The official road starts next week in Westport, but today it’s Canterbury B out at Hinds in the final pre-season where Blackburn will again direct the Hammers ship from halfback. A phrase not many, even the man himself, thought would be said this season – or perhaps ever again. Mid Canterbury coaches John Sherratt, Pete Manson and Grant Polson have rung the changes up front this week, ahead of their side’s final pre-season clash against Canterbury B this afternoon in Hinds. A number of changes have been made from the team who ran out onto the paddock last weekend against Ellesmere at Prebbleton, as the coaching trio look to finalise their game day 23 for the opening match of the Heartland Championship next week against Buller in Westport. Co-captain, Adam Williamson, returns this week and will pack down in the front row with Southern teammate Mason Briant and also Osea Baisagale.Watters Cup winning captain, Matt Stone has been called into the squad and will start at lock alongside the experienced Logan Bonnington, with the loose forward trio from last week remaining the same, with the exception of Lote Limadeni moving from lock to blindside flanker. Out in the backs, it’s a first-look at the new mid-field combination of international player Quinn Ngawati, who makes his debut for Mid Canterbury after arriving from America last weekend, and loan player Waitangi Tuisuga, who impressed last week against Ellesmere when given an opportunity.ElyhMcKibbin is the other change from last week, slotting onto the wing. With a 10-player strong bench at their disposal, the coaching trio will be keen to lock eyes on everyone this weekend as they take on a powerful side in Canterbury B. Today’s match kicks off at 2.30pm at the Hinds Domain, with the curtain raiser match between the Mid Canterbury Volts and the Canterbury Pasifika Colts at 12.45pm. The Mid Canterbury Development side will also step out today, but in Kaiapoi at 1pm, taking on North Canterbury.

“If the lungs were hurting, I didn’t feel it. I was bouncing around the place like a schoolkid I think. The thought of playing representative rugby wasn’t even considered until that day against Southern.

Six weeks ago, the prospect of just playing a game of rugby again seemed far-fetched for Tyler Blackburn. Fast forward to now, and he’s not only won a Watters Cup with Methven, he’s preparing for Heartland rugby duty with Mid Canterbury, whom he will co-captain this year. Matt Markham caught up with him to discuss the comeback.

“I think from the moment I met him; Tyler stood out,” Sherratt said. “He’s one of those players that team-mates seem to gravitate around; he’s a natural born leader and someone who is very well respected among his peers.”

Imogen Ayris I’ll admit, I didn’t know a thing about Imogen before the Birmingham Games. Watching her compete was an absolute treat; it’s always so good to see athletes enjoying themselves, and then the smile on her face when it was revealed she’d won a bronze medal for her country was awesome. And then, if watching a new star be born wasn’t enough, she went and revealed that she had competed with a fractured bone in her foot. Incredible stuff!

SPORT22 Ashburton Guardian Saturday, August 13, 2022

Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill Are we ready to declare these two as the Bash Brothers yet? Often it only takes a little competition to bring out the best in oneself, and these two clearly feed off challenging each other any time they step into the throwing ring. The Games offered yet another instalment of their great rivalry, but it was equally as heart-warming to see how close friends they are off the competition stage in the post-match interviews. Absolute stars, both of them. Selina Goddard I won’t lie here, overall, I was disappointed with the results from the Black Jacks and felt they should have achieved a lot more. But there was a shining light –the always-smiling Selina. When you learn the sport of bowls, the importance of having, or being, a good lead is drummed into you. Selina’s efforts over the games should be used as teaching aids for upand-coming players. A masterclass in draw bowls from start to finish. Joelle King and Paul Coll How good are they? Like really, how good? For Joelle to pick herself up after the singles and turn in two great performances to finish off the campaign was a true sign of a champion. Paul Coll is something else though, the way he gets around the court and puts his body on the line. Yet for all their bravado as winners, it’s perhaps the unseen benefits that make these two stand out. Given their ascension to the top of the pile in world squash, the sport is gaining fans across New Zealand that it wouldn’t have otherwise seen. That alone is success, right there. Hayley Whiting Sure, no medal – but how proud was Mid Canterbury of the dedication, effort and performance of one of our own. Seeing the literally hundreds of comments from people who were up at the crack of dawn to watch Hayley compete underlined just how much we value our sporting stars in Mid Canterbury. A mighty performance from Hayley, on a day where it just wasn’t meant to be.

Sophie Pascoe Sophie gets a lot of credit for her work in the pool, but it’s just so hard to ignore her sometimes. A humble and proud Kiwi, she wears her heart on her sleeve and races with real purpose. The dedication to her late grandmother after her gold medal swim just further underlined that. It can be easy to dismiss the talent Sophie has because we’re so used to her winning, but she is a truly great ambassador for our country.

Stars of the Games

Hamish Kerr We’ve long known New Zealanders can throw things pretty well, but jumping has always been a different kettle of fish when it’s come to the athletics arena. To see our first male high jumper claim Commonwealth Games gold in the manner in which Kerr did was incredible. With a clutch jump attempt failing by his Australian counterpart, the genuine shock, emotion and amazement on Kerr’s face was one of the moments of the Games from a Kiwi perspective, and it’s going to be exciting to see how far his story will go.

With an outstanding New Zealand performance at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games almost now becoming a fading memory, Matt Markham ponders his top-10 stars, in no particular order, from a golden time in Old Blighty. Gill

Aaron Gate Aaron is an ultimate sportsman, fiercely competitive, but a bit of a gentlemen with it once the business is over. His efforts at Birmingham to join a select group of athletes across the world as having won four gold medals at a Games was unbelievable to watch from the very start through to the finish. To transition from the velodrome to the road and continue that domination was a true mark of his class on the bike. Surely now, a Supreme Halberg Award is his for the taking. Ellesse Andrews Early doors at these Games, Andrews’ story looked like it was going to take a completely different path. Denied the chance to receive her silver medal from the Team Pursuit and fined for missing the medal ceremony, in order to prepare for her next event, she pushed any lingering demons aside and picked herself back up to cycle her way into the record books claiming three gold medals across the event – an achievement only bettered by one of her NZ Cycling team-mates in Aaron Gate. That good old Kiwi adage of getting up off the ground and getting stuck back into work rings true with this superstar. Lewis Clareburt If there’s not a picture of Lewis in the dictionary next to the word fish, then it must still be in production. We’ve known for a few years now that he’s one out of the box, but his efforts in the water at Birmingham again lifted him up another level. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a male swimmer who could win any number of events, but we’re finally back there now, and it’s going to be great to watch it all unfold.

Celtic finished top of the standings in Premier 1 netball at the completion of pool play in the Championship Round on Thursday night.

“They’re long matches, but it means if you have a couple of bad ends, you’re not out of it,” Wilson said.“I’m happy with where my bowls are at, I’ve felt pretty good – better than I have most of this season – recently, so hopefully that can translate onto the mat.”

The NBS Hockey Turf at the Ashburton Domain will be abuzz over the coming two Sundays as visiting clubs from the Canterbury region converge to celebrate junior hockey. Teams from Southern United, Hornby and also Temuka and Pleasant Point combined will trek to Ashburton to play across the next two weekends. The action will see players from Mini and Kiwi Sticks grades as well as players from the Year 7 & 8 age groups in action each week. Games begin at 9am tomorrow and will run through until 6pm in the evening. Football action After finally getting back on the pitches last weekend after a month-long hiatus, Mid Canterbury based senior football sides will be itching to get the momentum going again today when they head into Mainland Football action across the region. The Mid Canterbury Senior side head to Christchurch to tackle Burwood in an important match as they look to stay in the hunt in Division Two. The reserves side lead the Division Four competition and get home ground advantage today against Burwood while Methven, who are in Division 3 head north to Christchurch to take on St Alban’s Shirley. The Senior Women’s side are also in action taking on the Hornby Wildcats in the lower semi-final of the Division One women’s competition.

night’s final week of play in the Championship round before knockouts begin next week threw up few surprises across the board, but a drawn match and a noticeable swing in momentum in Premier 2 will make for an interesting two weeks on the court before winners are found in that division.

Bowlers out to end 18-year drought

Rowena Mackenzie will make her debut for the South Island Indoor Bowls team today in Upper Hutt.

The Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s Hockey side will be out to finish their normal season on a high today as the prepare for the semi-finals of Canterbury Hockey’s division one competition. The team take on Marist this afternoon at Christchurch’s Foster Park and while defeat won’t cost them their standing, the side will be keen to head forward with momentum as they eye the knockout stages of the competition next week.

Mackenzie will slot into the team as the lead in the Women’s Fours, her first appearance in the South Island side. Bassett, who is in red-hot form at the moment, will do the same. He teams up with a strong combination in the Men’s Fours and will be out to give his side solidarity off the front. Markham is also on debut, stepping in to lead the Men’s Triples, capping off some strong recent form on the mats. Play begins early this morning and is spread across three sessions with points accumulated from each victory, draw or defeat with the overall winner determined at the end of the day. Each discipline also carries its own Inter Island Medal for the team who gains ascendency over their rivals across the three matches.

It’s an all Ashburton College and Hampstead affair in the top four in Premier 3, with Hampstead B claiming the top billing at the end of pool play. They were dominant on Thursday night beating Methven Humm 37-18 in the opening match of the evening, but it wasn’t quite as happy hunting for the club’s Under 18 side, who fell to Ashburton College 10A 22-39 in the last match of the evening.Ashburton College B ensured they would be playing knockout netball with a strong 40-26 win over United in the other match. Hampstead B will take on Ashburton College B next week in one semi-final, with Ashburton College 10A and Hampstead U18 in the other.

Breaking an 18-year long drought is at the forefront of the minds of a group of local indoor bowlers as they trek to Wellington this weekend.Grant Wilson, Rowena Mackenzie, Mat Bassett and Jeremy Markham will all represent the South Island today in the annual Kevin Eddy Memorial clash between the North and South Island Indoor Bowls sides in Upper Hutt.Since 2004, the North Island have enjoyed a stranglehold on the annual fixture, with the South coming close on a number of occasions, but never quite doing enough to get their hands on the trophy once more. But today, they hope to change that.Under the guidance of manager, Michael Lawson, they’ll set about to get the job done over a long day of play which will be conducted over three sessions. And the Mid Canterbury contingent will play a big part.

The battle lines have been drawn, and it’s now a case of sink or swim in Mid Canterbury PremierThursdaynetball.

Celtic did what Celtic does in Premier 1 and won, accounting for United 56-24 with a bit of ease to qualify top of the pool. United were no match for their rivals, but will get a chance to prepare for another crack if they can topple Hampstead next week to advance through to the final. The defending champions consolidated their place as the No.2 ranked team in the competition with a hard-fought but well-taken victory over Methven on Thursday, coming from behind after trailing at the end of both the first and second quarters to win the match 44-35. Mt Somers lifted themselves off the bottom of the standings to overtake Southern in the other match in Premier 1, with the ladies from under the Mount claiming a 38-19 victory to cap a really strong season. The two sides will meet again next week in the fifth and sixth playoff.Celtic will face off with Methven in one match next week, while Hampstead and United will do battle in the other. In Premier 2, a 34-all draw between Rakaia and Methven B threw the cat among the pigeons in the overall standings, with Rakaia working their way into the top four with the result while Methven missed out completely on a top four berth. Ashburton College’s 34-22 victory over Celtic B showed they are on an upward trajectory heading into the knockout stage of the season, and will head in as the second to top qualifier in Premier 2 behind the rampant Allenton, who claimed a 27-15 win over Methven Shearmac on ThursdayAllentonnight.will now face Celtic B in one semi-final, while Ashburton College A and Rakaia will square off in the other.

Big cats on the prowl Be warned, watch out, a leap of big cats will be prowling around our town on Sunday, AugustThat’s21.when members of the Christchurch and Timaru Jaguar Drivers Clubs are going to pounce on us, and meet up with local owners of these magnificent vehicles.Alarge leap – one of the names for a group of Jaguars – is expected, and they’ll be assembled at the Plains Museum in Tinwald from around 10.00am, before prowling further afield. There’ll be a variety of models; some older cats, some cubs. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get up close to classic British sporting vehicles which are in a cat-egory of their own, and to chat with their keepers. And they’ll be almost next door to the Vintage Car Club. So how about starting out with a look at the Jaguars, before going to the Show and Shine – a purrfect way of seeing lots of inter esting cats, as well as a wide assortment of other vehicles. We cat-egorise this as an ab solute must see.

DriveThruAllthingsmotoringandotherwise with Bernard Egan Shine it, and show it Driving her beautiful Jaguar XK8 Coupe and meeting other en thusiasts – for Jenny Thompson that’s absolute purr-fection.

Jim Lawton - International gentleman The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand has designated Sunday August 21, 2022 as their national Daffodil Rally for CancerThroughoutday. New Zealand, club members will take to the roads in their vehicles, or arrange other events to raise funds for their local branch of the Cancer Society.

Back in 2005, Jim Lawton shared his interest in motoring with our readers and us. Motoring was definitely in Jim’s blood, and he followed a very successful career in the automotive industry, working on large machinery and specialising in hydraulics and balers and particularly the International brand, before becoming a vehicle inspector. When the 1956 International AR 110 truck provided as a work vehicle was up for replacement Jim purchased it, firstly for everyday transport, then later as a recreational vehicle. Jim joined – and became very involved with – the Ashburton Vintage Car Club serving in in various positions including chairman.Heenjoyed the Commercial Section of the club, and introduced the ever-popular monthly mid-week luncheons known as Jim’s Tucker Run. Not all of Jim’s classic motoring was in the International AR 110 truck, he had other vehicles and enjoyed riding a Honda CG 110 Commentingmotorcycle.onthe same model num ber, Jim joked he piloted a model 110 with either two or four wheels This writer had the pleasure of being Jim’s navigator on a Vintage Car Club New Year’s Day Rally. We were in the Interna tional truck and we had a great time. That Rally included a rural tour with an afternoon tea stop at Wakanui Beach. We didn’t get lost. Credit for that was mostly, actually all due to Jim, who knew local roads like the back of his hand. The Guardian Motoring Team have fond memories of Jim, and we offer our condolences to Alison, Roger and Jody and Aidan.

There was a light in the darkness… Transitional housing, budgeting advice, and food support provided the wind beneath Darren’s wings to help him back on to his feet in a time of need. Now, Darren’s family are enjoying the warmth and security of their own place and can look forward to a positive future. The Salvation Army wraparound services will warm the hearts of those needing support this winter, bringing about positive outcomes, like the hope given to Darren, Miriana and their children. But we can’t do it alone… Whatever amount you can manage, you can be sure that it will make a difference.

ELLIOTT, Jean Naomi –Murray, Sharron, Jane and families wish to sincerely thank those who supported us following the loss of our much loved Wife, Mum and Nana. Always in our thoughts and forever in our hearts.

A ridge of high pressure remains over most of the country this weekend. However, a front brushes up the eastern side of the country today in a cool south to southwest flow. A strong northerly flow develops on Monday ahead of a front approaching from the Tasman Sea, which moves over central New Zealand on Tuesday.
