A Methven teacher has developed an app that’s effective in address ing bullying in schools. Last year deputy principal at Mount Hutt College, Kaylib Gorrie, received a leadership scholarship from Advance Ashburton to fur ther develop an anti-bullying app that’s already in use at his school. The app is coded and available through Bully Free MHC (Mount Hutt College). It allows users to identify on the app where bullying or negative wellbeing occurs. If a student has a good day, they can map their experience. If their day is upsetting they also map that and seek help through tips and sugges tions built into the app. An example is to find a peer sup port team or seek an appointment with a counsellor, Gorrie said. “From a school management perspective we can pull up the screen and take a helicopter view of where the hotspots are in the school.“It’sgreat and allows us to allo cate additional staff and peer sup port to identify those spots and reduce the incidence.” Gorrie has sought the involve ment of Mount Hutt College staff and students and, so far this term, there’ve been 71 users. Rather than just adopting it as an efficient tool locally, he’s taking it further so it can become availa ble to all schools. “I’m looking at nationwide use of my wellbeing app based on the Mount Hutt model,” he said.

Grind café owner, Hannah Mentink, said the boil water notices “are a hassle for everyone, but it is what it is”.“It’s a bit of a pain but we can understand why they put them in place,” Mentink said.

Café 131 owner, Richard Toms, said it is an inconvenience that won’t be fixed overnight, but there was no point getting all riled up about it. “It is a pain because when we are busy you have to keep an eye on it all the time and we are really busy with ski season,” Toms said. “But there are worse places in the world and it’s not that bad we can’t manage it.”

Café 131 and Alpine Grind are lucky enough to be situated across the road from the tanker, but both said having a water tanker circulating businesses delivering water was a huge help.

Deputy mayor and Methven resident, Liz McMillan said in last week’s council activity briefing that the boil water notices have been a tiresome drain on the town. She said the community and the businesses are to be commended. “It’s been tough,” McMillan said. “We can’t wait until that membrane plant is in. It’s wearing people down.” An end is in sight with the Ashburton District Council’s $9.4 million Methven water supply upgrade under way that will put an end to boil water notices –but it will not be completed until mid2023.The council is aiming to have the first new reservoir tank commissioned by the end of the month, which has 840 cubic metres storage capacity, more than the existing concrete tank’s 700cm3.

Café 131 owner, Richard Toms, says the boil water notices “whenever it rains” in Methven are a manageable inconvenience.

A water tanker has become commonplace in their town centre, and Methven residents can’t wait for the town’s water supply upgrade to be complete. Methven has suffered through yet another boil water notice that was lifted on Monday morning, which meant another busy winter weekend in the tourist town sourcing clean water. For businesses trading in a booming winter period in the tourist town, the added stress of sourcing clean water hasn’t helped on top of staffing shortages while they are flat out with ski seasonAlpinetrade.

The recent 150kph winds damaged the second new tank to the point a full replacement is required, meaning a two-month delay waiting for new parts. Construction of the membrane plant is on schedule for February, dependent on supply chain issues and weather, which will be commissioned before next winter.

Signing off the second Ashburton bridge business case headlines a big day at the Ashburton District Council tomorrow. It is a jam-packed agenda for the sitting councillors to work through, which has the meeting starting two hours earlier. The second bridge is the big ticket item, but the councillors will also be looking at the Baring Square East landscape plans, where the $1.7m of extra road funding goes, the Lakes Camp and Clearwater 30-year Plan 2022, and plenty more. First up the council will be presented with proposed landscape plans for Baring Square East to be approved so they can go out for tender.Theproject is separate too, but in conjunction with, the construction of the new library and civicThen, centre.ater reviewing the findings of the 2021-22 annual residents’ survey, the council will be presented with a detailed business case for the second bridge. A report will also be tabled outlining options for the council around its current non-compliances on three water race intake consents regarding fish screens.

Zion Pilgrim wants Gloriavale to be a healthy and safe community.

Zion had a lifeline in Timaru and knew if he left, he had a house and former Gloriavale members to be reunited with. But was he apprehensive about departing?“No,”he said. “I was at peace. I knew God was good in case I had to leave. As a commercial pilot and leader of the hunting/guidance operation within Gloriavale, I was exposed to the outside world.”Zion is one of former Gloriavale members who’s mounting a ground-breaking legal case against the cult’s powerful leaders, detailed in the doco. “I have parents, brothers and sisters and extended family members still inside, and I want access to them and positive change for the community,” he said.Zion has a message for those still inside Gloriavale.

The council has budgeted to contribute $7.5m to the project and Waka Kotahi’s contribution is likely to be 62 per cent, leaving an estimated $36m shortfall which the council hopes the Government will cover.

Mullet sacrificed for Starship

After two years of growing, it only took half an hour for Charlie Quinlan to lose his mullet, but it was all for a good cause. Charlie raised $1200 for the Starship Children’s Hospital by getting his hair in front of the whole of Lauriston School. Charlie has no personal connection with the hospital, but wanted to support a charity that was for children. This was not the first fundraising he had done, last year he raised $300 for the Make A Wish Foundation, a charity that makes the wishes of critically ill children a reality.“Lastyear I did some baking for Make A Wish and I wanted to support another charity that helps children, so I chose Starship,” Charlie said.

Was Richard Pearse the first man ever to take flight? There’s conflicting accounts as to when he actually took flight.

“I will and I won’t miss it (the mullet),” Charlie said. The mullet took a lot of brushing and washing to maintain it. Doing the cutting was Clippers Hair Studio stylist, Livvy Barclay. In only her second year of hairdressing this was the most public haircut she’d ever done. “The pressure was on I didn’t want to mess up in front of everyone,” she Charlie’ssaid.mum Jacqui Quinlan couldn’t have been more proud with the amount raised. “We set out to raise $350, and we well and truly surpassed that.” Jacqui said. She was especially proud of the Lauriston School community that raised over $400 on the day. The school encourages its pupils to undertake fundraising events as an alternative to homework with its Ready Challenge. The programme teaches life skills to the kids and about giving back to the local community and exploring their region through a physical branch of the programme. An Ashburton woman, now deceased, could hold the key to an aviation puzzle that’s been circulating around New Zealand for over 100 years. Daisy McLean witnessed the first flight, or one of the earliest, that aviator, Richard Pearse, made near Temuka in 1903. While the Wright Brothers have been celebrated as the first men to fly, Pearse, a little known farmer, may have beaten them to it. The book, The Riddle of Richard Pearse, by Christchurch author, Gordon Ogilvie, isn’t definitive and Pearse himself claims his first powered flight occurred the following year, but there were enough eye-witness accounts of earlier uncontrolled flights in and around Waitohi Flats. One of them came from Daisy McLean (nee Crawford) who came to live in Ashburton. “I can remember it lifting up, coming down and veering towards the road where there was a gorse fence and landing on the hedge,” she said. She recalled the date being March 31, 1903, nine months before the Wright Brothers flew. In 1976, TVNZ filmed a docu-drama about Pearse and built a model of his aircraft. The replica toured New Zealand and received publicity on radio, TV and newspapers when it arrived in IChristchurch.wasayoungTV One journalist at the time and Daisy’s name was given to me as an eyewitness. My grandparents, on my mother’s side, lived in Temuka most of their lives, and I’m sure a relative passed on her name. By the 1970s, Daisy was a resident at Tuarangi Home and agreed to be interviewed. I volunteered and travelled to Ashburton to capture her account.Forty-five years later I remember most of it, including her description of a clear autumn day and Pearse’s plane landing in a hedge after a few hundred metres in Overflight.the decades the interview has stayed with me and recently I contacted TVNZ archives to request a copy. Their answer was they no longer kept it. It had been wiped.Myinterview was screened on the regional Christchurch programme, not the national news and records of The South Tonight, with Bryan Allpress and Rodney Bryant, weren’t stored for posterity, they claimed. There is one outlet remaining, Daisy’s family. Are there family members living in Mid Canterbury, do they recall the interview and even recorded it in some way? Even better, did she keep a diary or personal record of what she saw in March, 1903? If she did, the Ashburton Guardian would like to know and use her information to contest what could be one of the most celebrated pieces of misinformation. Richard Pearse can be more than a snapshot in history, an airport or a street name in Christchurch. He can be the founder of aviation.

Data from processors from October 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022 showed that the Southland region had one of the country’s lowest oc currences of sheep measles identified in car casses, despite sending the highest number of animals for processing. Of 1,919,242 sheep processed in the region, from 1510 farms, 1884 or 0.1 per cent of car casses were found to be affected. Buller and Westport had no affected car casses, processing just over 13,000 sheep in total. Most South Island districts recorded low proportions of affected carcasses, apart from Marlborough (0.9 per cent) and Kaikoura (1.0 per cent).

Ashburton region rated ‘medium’ for sheep measles

The Ashburton region is rated as a “medium” for the control of sheep measles – according to the latest analysis by the Ovis Manage ment programme. Of a survey done of 958,079 animals killed at the works, 3659, or 0.4 per cent were grad ed as infected. Neighbouring Selwyn district was rated as “high” with 479,203 animals killed, and 2420 infected, or 0.50 per cent. South Island farmers are currently achiev ing greater success in the management of sheep measles than those in the North Island according to the analysis. Sheep measles is caused by the T. ovis tape worm. Although it poses no risk to human health, it can cause blemishes in sheep meat, which is undesirable for consumers here and overseas.TheOvis programme works to promote the control of sheep measles through com munication and collaboration and by raising awareness of the importance of all dog own ers regularly treating their dogs for the tape worm.Michelle Simpson, Ovis Management pro ject manager, said controlling sheep measles was important for the primary sector. “While New Zealand currently has relative ly low levels of sheep measles, an outbreak can result in downgrading or condemnation of otherwise healthy animals. Only 20 per cent of affected carcasses are detected dur ing meat inspection at processing plants, therefore the higher the prevalence rate, the higher the risk of meat from affected animals reaching the market,” she said. “It costs farmers and processors a lot of money due to condemned stock. One con cern with Ovis is that if a farmer is not the one sending their lambs for processing, they may not know that they are passing the prob lem on.”

The pros and cons of different crop establishment techniques were on display at a Mid Canterbury field day run by a group of arable farmers looking to improve their soil quality.

The Eiffelton-based group was one of the first to be set up as part of the Foundation for Arable Research’s (FAR) Growers Leading Change (GLC) initiative, which encourages arable farmers to form groups to develop, test, and introduce new ideas, technologies and ways of working.

The cost of production was lower using no-till, while ploughing and minimum tillage had higher diesel and machinery costs.Itwas possible to tell the difference between the options when walking across the paddock, which also reflected the soil’s water-holding capacity. For years Lions, Rotary and other service clubs have been seen wearing flak jackets and directing traffic. They’ve painted fences, cleared rubbish and held a gold coin trail at Christmas. They are wonderful projects that benefit the commu nity but, in today’s busy, commercial world, unlikely to attract new membersSoBrian Sheehan responded with something different. Why don’t you do something that members are good at? “Go out there, talk to the com munity, find out what their issues are and, together with individu als or groups, advocate on their behalf,” he said.

He might have said it six weeks ago, but his an nouncement has serious repercussions for service clubs around the world.

The important words are “their behalf”. From time to time service clubs will present submissions to support their own projects. There’s nothing wrong with that, but Sheehan was taking the initia tive a step further.

He’s saying why don’t service or community groups champion the needs of their town or city or country.Whycan’t they mobilise their structure and influence to achieve a project that’s beyond the grasp of individuals or small groups? They don’t have to wear the flak jacket or pick up a painting brush to achieve it, just do what they’re good at. Of course Sheehan’s being cunning. By doing so, at a local, regional or national level, the ser vice group will receive the profile it’s been

They’llseeking.beseen as an important advocacy group that gets things done and is worth joining. It struck a chord with me. As a former service club member in the North Island, I’ve long been Rotary’s John the Baptist but re mained firmly in the wilderness. The clubs I’ve addressed haven’t wanted to change. Why should they? They’ve enjoyed their social gathering, their meal, their speak er and their $5 fine for raising their head above the parapet. But the world’s changing and discretionary time is becoming more difficult to find. Club mem bership is dwindling. So Sheehan isn’t just pointing to a new pathway, he’s recommend ing a blueprint for survival. And he’s also making another and more important point. He’s saying the community out there needs you, your input, your influ ence and your advocacy. When people look back on his term they might just remember him as the person who saved a global service club from extinc tion because he had an idea “whose time had come” just at the ideal moment.

Blueprint for service clubs’ survival

Brian Sheehan, recently anoint ed World President of Lions, chose New Zealand for his first overseas visit. The man from Minnesota came to Methven and opened an extension to its walkway. He was meant to chopper to Mount Hutt but the weather intervened and closed in. It was all deserving stuff, but then he said something that made him the John the Baptist for volunteers. He was asked by the Guardian what he was going to do to re-energise service clubs and make them relevant. In his answer, he looked outward, not inward. Instead of creating strategies to invite new members to join, he sought ways in which Lions Clubs could advo cate on behalf of the community.

Richie Mo’unga Don’t consider this a knock on Beauden Barrett, it’s hard to get a line on where he’s at given the state of play in front of him during the first few tests of the season. But with Richie at control in the 10 jersey on Sunday we looked a lot more attack-orientated, a lot more organised and while there were periods where he perhaps wasn’t at his best, his decision-making and kicking certainly played a massive impact in getting the All Blacks moving forward when it mattered most.

The big fella’s best game in the All Blacks jersey for quite some time. He was physical and demanding and asked constant questions of the Boks at key points in the game. It’s such a small change, but by reverting back into the engine room he looked much more comfortable about what his role was and then stepped out and delivered it very well alongside the mercurial, Sam Whitelock.

Can NZ Rugby enforce a change in the head coaching role post Sunday morning’s dramatic turnaround in form against South Africa? you believe that Ian Foster should be retained through until the World Cup, is this our last chance to bring in someone else to coach the side before it’s too late? your thoughts to editorial@ theguardian.co.nz

Wow, where do you start!Somuch going on around the All Blacks’ performance early on Sunday morning, so many permutations and so much at stake, for so many people. But let’s start with the action; with a group of slightly reshuffled All Blacks sent out into the cauldron of Ellis Park (you couldn’t hear the haka, even with the microphones shoved in their faces), the equivalent of our own EdenFacingPark.a team that only seven days ago had run over the top of them, and even though there were some odd selections in there as well, few pundits gave the men in black any show at all. But – it’s a funny old game.

Stars of Sunday’s Ellis Park Show Conference much ado about nothing

A first five who some claimed couldn’t quite bring his irresistible force to the very top level, the only change in a misfiring backline.

Shannon Frizell

Aaron Smith Sure, he might not be the best all-round halfback in the world any more, but that pass is without doubt the quickest and hardest in world rugby. Smith has probably been a little frustrated in the past few months, but when the pack in front of you is going backwards, it’s hard to make momentum, and I think he reminded a few on Sunday morning just how good he can be when the front foot is applied. Clean and crisp ball to a waiting and ready back line allowed for that key first moment in a sequence to get moving forward.

For a number of reasons, Frizell is a polarising player for New Zealand rugby fans. A lot of it is to do with things o the field, but you can’t deny that when on song, he’s a powerful player who creates a lot of havoc for rival teams. Not afraid to put his head down and get into the match in the physical space, he’s a strong ball carrier, but equally as good at the set piece too. A very strong game from him on the weekend.

Reiko Ioane I’ve long been a critic of the ideology that Ioane is a centre. One of the best wings in the world, yes – but in the midfield a little less convincing. On Sunday morning he changed my way of thinking. A standout performance full of brutal ball-running and decision making. Such was his power with ball in hand that it was his influence that often created space out wide by dragging defenders towards him and allowing the ball to move behind his back.

or

That lot couldn’t lower the colours of a rampant Bok outfit, couldWell, they?yes, they could. I’ve seen a vast amount of test rugby. The first proper memory is from 1971, when Ian Kirkpatrick grabbed the ball from a ruck inside his own half at Lancaster Park against the power-packed Lions, and made a beeline straight for us; my dad, at least one brother and a couple of uncles part of a 10,000-strong embankment crowd, and Kirky swatted off tacklers left right and centre as he dotted down right in front of us. That sort of thing tends to whet the appetite for more, and there’s been so many. Sean Fitzpatrick banging his fist into the turf when his team was the first to finally beat the Boks on their home soil; that was a goodie too. About the same year the ABs destroyed a handy Wallabies side at Athletic Park, in weather only Wellington can provide. Driving, freezing rain, and the All Blacks put on a handling clinic. Names like Cullen, Mehrtens, Lomu, Brooke and Marshall spring to mind. This one, though, considering the suffocating pressures on all involved, has to be right up there. The re-jigged pack (thank you Jason Ryan) improved dramatically on last week’s performance, which apparently was already the best for ages, and good ball from the forwards is always key. Suddenly the first-five has that extra half-second to work some magic, and that translates directly to the midfielders outside him, and the outside backs are looking to go forward, instead of constantly backpedalling, preparing to get into tackling duty already, even though it starts out as their ownEveryoneball. knew that the horsepower was there under the bonnet; it just needed a serious tune-up. It’s hard to draw any other conclusion that Ryan has had a major influence around thatAndtune-up.yet,there’s still actually no big answers from the powers that be, with a World Cup on the horizon; head coach Ian Foster’s job is safe, at least until the team gets home from South Africa. Social media will continue to be in ultra-overdrive for every hour until then. And what of Razor? Still sitting in the wings, waiting, waiting . . . His fairytale story would be to say sod it, and bugger off to Namibia for a year, take them to a stunning upset quarter-final spot in the World Cup, at the expense of, say, Scotland or Wales (or New Zealand) then come back with a clean slate, and a ton of clear air before the next big dance.

It was the ultimate masterclass in saying something while actually saying nothing. But if there was an underlying message from the botched-up press conference held by NZ Rugby boss Mark Robinson on Sunday night, it was that he, along with those who sit alongside him, still have no idea what the right way to move forward is in the wake of tumultuous few months for the national rugby side. No declaration of full faith in Ian Foster, nor a complete condemnation of him either. Admittedly, the latter would have been hard given what had unfolded at Ellis Park just a few hours earlier but still, it was the announcement about no“Atannouncement.thispointthe main priority is to get everyone home. We will then take stock, meet with management as soon as we reasonably can after getting home and debrief how the tour went and where we see things,” he said. Nothing ventured. Nothing gained. Just nothing, really. Perhaps there’s a slight inkling there, given that the NZ Rugby board will meet to discuss the tour, that there’s still a lot of unease about Foster being the right man for the job ahead of the World Cup.But again, he showed – in the most brutal and challenging of circumstances on Sunday morning – that he can prepare his side to play the brand of rugby that is expected and, most importantly win when the backs are against the wall. It’s going to be a tough few days wait for Foster, although his demeanour was pretty much unchanged as he prepared to hit the air for the return trip to New Zealand yesterday morning. “I’m about to hop on a plane and go home and mow the lawns around the pool. I’ll be given feedback, no doubt, but my expectations are I’m the All Blacks head coach and later in the week I’ll be going to Christchurch and assembling with the team until I’m told anything different,” he said. The drums are again beating with unconfirmed reports from around the globe that Scott Robertson is set to take over the role later this week. Given the outpouring of support from key members within the All Blacks squad for Foster, including Ardie Savea, there’s potential there for even further trouble to come if the change is made. Then again, those rumours and unconfirmed reports may well be just like Robinson’s press conference on Sunday night. Much ado, about absolutely nothing.

AB horsepower gets ultimate tune up

A couple of new-ish props to start, with a hooker who appears to have found his station in life – sandwiched between those monster men, and facing even bigger monster-men right in the ultimate rugby pressure point. What do you think?

I’m convinced he’s some form of demi-god. There are just things he does that seem almost impossible to the mere human on a rugby paddock. Power, strength and skill – and all three in spades, it’s quite clearly evident. Perhaps though, it’s more the thing you don’t easily see. His work at the breakdown, be it cleaning out or getting upright and over the ball looking for a turnover the work rate is just immense, and his team mates just seem to feed o his ability to alter the course of a match.

Rieko Ioane was just one of several All Blacks who found some top form on Sunday morning.

Mid Canterbury’s sole points came from winger, Raitube Vasurakuta, who managed to get over the line with Nathan McCloy adding the extra points. VACANT ACL are looking for a Water Maintenance Superstar to join our team. One of our long-term servicemen has decided to hang up his boots after 10 years of faultless service with his retirement imminent as of the Christmas break 2022. We are now actively advertising and searching to find their replacement The team wishes to fill this role as soon as possible, therefore giving us the ability to have an extended transition period where the new employee can be trained by the best. The role is based at the Ocean Farm tertiary wastewater treatment site – this is the end of the treatment process where the final effluent is irrigated to land. This position would suit someone who is physically fit and able to undertake routine inspections, repairs and cleaning of sprinklers – we have about 1400 of them. If you love working outdoors and can work unsupervised, ACL Water want to hear from you. A typical day would see you travel to site and undertake checks of the irrigation system and the farmlands where the pop-up sprinklers are located. We are interested in someone with a can-do attitude and hands-on experience of sprinkler repair or plumbing type works – this position includes a fair content of manual labour. The position is sole charge, meaning you will work alone for most of the time – reporting directly to the Treatment Plant operators, they will provide direction and monitor performance of the facility.
