Ashburton’s planned second bridge now faces its biggest hurdle, finding an extra $76 million than originally thought to pay for it. The Ashburton District Council approved the detailed business case (DBC) for the now $113.6 million second urban bridge project and it will now go to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to seek project approval. That process kick-starts the biggest and most important conversation –Councilfunding.chiefexecutive Hamish Riach said the DBC produces a compelling case for a nationally significant project to pursue Government funding. The council has budgeted $7.5m for the project in its longterm plan (LTP), but that was when the initial estimate was $37m.Itis now much more than just a bridge, and that comes with a bigger price tag, three times as much, to Whenmatch.Waka Kotahi considers the DBC it will confirm their contribution to the project, and then the council will engage with the Government to seek funding solutions to meet the shortfall. At the bare minimum of 51 per cent, Waka Kotahi would contributeThe$57.9m.DBC calculates that Waka Kotahi will contribute 62 per cent (an additional 7 per cent for the reduced crash risk for the state highway and 4 per cent for the wider GDP resilience benefits) which would be a $70.4m contribution. With the council’s current $7.5m, that leaves anywhere between $36m and $48m unaccounted for. In light of the DBC, and the significant increase in scope and construction costs, the council has said it will consider increasing its contribution in its next Annual Plan process 2023/24. Waka Kotahi is likely to respond with its decision, and what its contribution will be, in November. The Ashburton District Council will also likely be in discussion with the Government on funding options before it reconsiders its contribution.Councillors were adamant the DBC presented a compelling argument for the second bridge and chief executive Hamish Riach said it places the council in a strong position to seek funding from the government.Oncefunding is secured, the detailed engineering design is proposed for 2024/25 with construction planned to begin the followingPreparingyear.the DBC cost $1m, 51 per cent funded by Waka Kotahi and also included a $94,500 grant from the Provincial Growth Fund.

Funeral of Don Church held today

St Peter’s Anglican Church in Allenton is for sale by tender and, bishop’s warden, Roger Paterson, says it’s already attracted four groups of people looking to purchase either as a place of worship or to convert it as a private residence. “We’re selling because we haven’t had a service there for four years,” Paterson said. “We’ve had very loyal church members for many years but, in recent times, their number has dwindled.”Since 2018 it’s been booked by another church group, Allenton School and a Keep Fit class, but Paterson said there’s not enough use to keep it going. “It could remain as a church or be redeveloped as a residence. It’s in good going order, structurally sound and you could build two bedrooms on the mezzanine,” he said. The church, on the corner of Harrison Street and Allen’s Road, is 199 square metres, on an 869 square metreTenderssection.close on September 14 but, before then, the Bishop of Christchurch, Peter Carroll, will hold a service three days earlier to deconsecrate the building. A man who’s given outstanding service to Mid Canterbury as an accountant, director, property developer, husband and father will be remembered at a funeral service at Hotel Ashburton this afternoon.DonChurch died last week aged 84. He came to Ashburton from Christchurch at an early age and worked for the National Bank, then Brophy Knight as an accountant and partner. At 43 he retired from public practice to become a fulltime director and trustee. Don established Avon Properties Limited, initially purchasing and co-owning small shops and strip retail in Christchurch and, then with the development of malls, moved into industrial development in both Christchurch and Auckland.Hisother interests included the Lyttelton Port Company and directorships of Canterbury Roller Flour Mills, Mt Hutt Ski and Alpine Tourist Co Ltd, Electricity Ashburton and CBS Canterbury. Through Avon Properties Ltd and Crescent Investments Ltd, he bought 12 hectares in Wanaka and developed them into residential sections.

Most Ashburton residential properties for sale have three or four bedrooms, two lounges, a kitchen, an ensuite and a garage. A new listing has no bedrooms or garage, a kitchen, two offices, a hall, two toilets, a raised sanctuary and 52 chairs, yet it’s attracted immediate interest.

Don Church also gave back extensively to Mid Canterbury through Advance Ashburton, the Ashburton Branch of CCS, St David’s Church and as a trustee of the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation. In 2001 he began a 15-year association with Presbyterian Support which extended through the upper South Island.“Being charitable is important to me,” he said recently. He is survived by his wife Robyn, three children, grandchildren and extended family members.

It just goes to show why you should live in a place like Ashburton.”Theteam also wanted to thank the quick response by the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade who were quickly on scene to stop the fire

The formation of Mid Canterbury’s mountains is the favourite subject of a former Ashburton scientist. David Barrell, who graduated with a M.Sc from Canterbury University, was educated here in the 1970s. He’ll speak at U3A next Tuesday (August 30) on the formation and impacts of glaciation. His presentation will address how and when the mountains developed and how climatic cycles have shaped the Mid Canterbury hinterland through the advance and retreat of ice-age glaciers. Barrell is a senior scientist with GNS Science in Dunedin.

Chamberlain said there is 37km of rehabilitation work programmed in the next three years, and another 23kms after that so the additional $1.7m of funding is “a bit of a catch-up, but we still have a lot of work to do”.

Chamberlain said the decision on what sections to do first has been chosen based on “the engineer’s assessment of the network”. “Rehabs are the best solution to fixing our roads that have got problems at the end of their life and they create a long term solution.”The council approved the allocation of the $1.7m, but one councillor was not happy. Councillor Stuart Wilson again railed against money being poured into “that blasted Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road which is the bane of my life”. He believed the $1.7m was supposed to be spread around the district, not “up into that damn scenic highway”.

“A lot of the stock we had in the shop was supposed to arrive for summer (2021) but only arrived two months ago,” Monique said. Thankfully they did have some stock in storage off site. So they are back up in running in the old TAB building on Havelock Street.

“We are back on the tools and ready to take on any servicing. We have great staff and everyone has pulled together to make it happen.”

Police are seeking information after a person was hospitalised following an alleged attack in the early hours of Saturday morning. “Shortly before 3am on Saturday, 20th August police received a report of a grievous assault that had happened earlier outside a business premises in Tancred Street, Ashburton. Police and ambulance attended and one person was transported to Christchurch Hospital. Police enquiries into the incident are ongoing,” a police spokesperson said. The Stoked Cycles owners were on their first overseas holiday in two years when they had to sit idly by, unable to do anything, but watch their shop fill with fire and smoke. “We were having a nice lunch when we got the phone call. All we could do was watch the security cameras, and see it disappear in front of our eyes.” The fire was sparked by an e-bike battery that was charging. On the security camera footage fire can be seen shooting across the room, as the lithium cells combusted.

“The E-bike battery that caused the fire was a cheap import,” Monique said, adding that the shop was only repairing the bike because no-one else would.

Most of the product inside the store at the time will have to be thrown away, as the damage sustained was not worth repairing. Due to the current supply chain issues in the bike industry, the owners are concerned how long it will take for replacements to arrive.

Thespreading.bikethat caused the fire was in for service and not one that is sold at the cycle shop.

There is 72km of road that is in need of rehabilitation in the Ashburton District, and the council is currenlty able to do 8km per year with the funding available.

The Ashburton Guardian has sought an update on the condition of patients involved in the health shuttle crash on Friday, but due to privacy reasons there is nothing to share at this time. For now the Timaru health shuttle will be transporting patients from Ashburton.

Paul Brake’s recommendation was to buy reputable brands that have good customer support and that replacement parts can be sourced.Thestore will keep selling E-bikes, but they are yet to decide on any changes they make to avoid a similar incident.

Stoked Cycles co-owners Paul and Monique Brake have owned the shop since early 2020.

Experts say it will take nine years to repair the district’s roads at the current rate of funded work. There is an estimated 72km of sealed road in dire need of rehabilitation in the district and the Ashburton District Council is currently rehabilitating around 8km of it per year from its available funding.Thecouncil can’t simply repair all 72km in one year because they don’t have the money. “[We don’t have the] money or probably the resources to do that much in one year,” roading manager Mark Chamberlain said. “By the time we get that 70km done, there will no doubt be other sections that need the work done. “It’s just an ongoing thing on an ageing network getting used by traffic.”For the current financial year the council has budgeted $2,099,160 of subsidised rehabilitation work, which receives 51 per cent funding from Waka Kotahi NZTA, and that covers around 8km.The council has an additional $1.7m, reallocated from the forestry reserve, for unsubsidised road rehabilitation, which is a small dent, around 6km, but is addressing the worst areas. That gives the council a total of $3,799,160 for sealed road rehabilitation in 2022/23.

Controlling the spread of nassella tussock means regularly inspecting your property and taking appropriate action at the right time.Nassella tussock is spreading in Can terbury. The invasive grass already occu pies over 400,000 hectares in Canterbury across 1450 properties. While it looks similar to other tussock species, nassella tussock displaces oth er grasses leaving pasture unpalatable to stock. It can also spread rapidly when es tablished.Mature plants can produce up to 100,000 seeds, which are readily dispersed to neighbouring land by wind, water, stock, clothing, and machinery. Nassel la can cope with exposed dry conditions, which enable it to establish and thrive. There are almost certainly undiscovered infestations within Mid Canterbury, but these can be difficult to identify.

Getting ahead of nassella tussock spread

Environment Canterbury’s (ECan) bi osecurity team is working with landown ers to identify nassella tussock, control its spread and reduce impacts on the envi ronment.Controlling nassella and keeping it to manageable levels is a cost to landowners. Surveying your land and removing plants annually protects your assets as well as neighbouring properties. Canterbury land occupiers are required under the Canterbury Regional Pest Man agement Plan to control nassella annually before it seeds. Plants need to be removed by September 30 for most properties in Canterbury, or October 31 for high-density infestations in the Hurunui district. If you are using contractors to remove plants, ECan recommends contacting them early. Completing control work ear lier in the year, may help work around onfarm activities, such as lambing, which can clash with compliance dates in some areas.

As you will be aware there has been severe damage to some areas on the top of the South Island with major flooding, farms still under water and road closures pre venting outside assistance, deliveries, and pick-ups.“Additional stock food is likely to be required for farmers in these areas to get through winter and there have been many offers of assistance that Feds will be work ing through over the coming days,” Mid Canterbury provincial president David Acland said. “We know that time is very tight for everyone with calving and lambing, and many of you will find you’re having to bal ance your own feed needs. Please ensure you have enough feed for your own ani mals before offering to assist others.

“If you have surplus feed available or know someone else that does, this can be listed with the Feed Co-ordination Ser vice (on the Feds website) and matched with a willing buyer in need.

“Alternately you may have space for grazing which can be listed there. “If you are located in a flood-affected area and need assistance with sourcing feed please register here,” Acland said. “For those that have indicated you would like to offer a cash donation, The Farmers Adverse Events Trust will ensure your funds are spent wisely.”

Many were haemorrhaging after a two-year loss of revenue through Covid and the CBD up grade, and we made a point of telling their stories and remind ing the public how important they are to all of us. Because good papers do more than just report the news. Good papers stand up for their communities when it really matters. The Ashburton Guardian is a good paper. Wrong. It’s a bloody special little paper and all of you help make that possible with your support, feedback and your involvement. Because the Ashburton Guardian is as much your paper as it is ours. That’s why we made our mark in New Zealand journalism’s biggest night of the year on Sat urday. It was very much a team and community effort.

Proud. Bloody proud. That’s how Ashburton Guardian colleagues Simon Bell and Sonia Gill and I felt when our punch-aboveits-weight little paper hit new heights at the prestigious New Zealand journalism awards in Auckland on Saturday. Before 600 guests, all dressed in their finest, we were thrilled to represent the Guardian and Mid Canterbury and be there when it was named runner-up in the Community Newspaper of the Year category and also a finalist in the best campaign category at the Voyager Media Awards.Inthe campaign category, which recognised our resound ingly successful shop smart, shop local project, we rubbed shoulders with entries from media superpowers Stuff and NZME, with all their advantages in resources and personnel. Those big players predict ably dominated the black-tie function, but not before we made our mark, being the only community newspaper to make twoYes,finals.theonly one, which is no mean feat. The number of media onlook ers at Saturday’s function who congratulated us on our efforts –including, no less, than broad cast reporter of the year and media A-lister Tova O’Brien –showed just what wider impact that had on the most discerning of “Peopleaudiences.are talking about the Guardian. They know what it means for a small independent to do so well,’’ former Guardian editor and now Voyager judge, Coen Lammers, said at the function.Thosecomments illustrated, and reminded us, just what value we provide you, our read ers, and our ever-supportive advertisers.Yes,there are two community newspapers in Ashburton, but I don’t think there’s any doubt about the clear edge we have in quality and community connec tion, something which has been built up over 143 years. The New Zealand 2022 journalism award judges simply reinforced that belief.Ofparticular

There was no joy for Mid Canterbury born and raised multisport athlete Braden Currie in Slovakia. Currie was competing in the Col lins Cup – a new-look triathlon competition which held its second running during the early hours of Sunday morning – competing for Team International alongside 11 of his peers from all round the world. Three teams of 12, including Eu rope and the USA, took part in the 12 races, in which an athlete from each team was pitted against two others from the remaining teams in a 2km swim, an 80km bike and an 18km run.Currie lined up in the last of the 12 races with Team International very much still in the hunt when he dove into the water. By the time he jumped off the bike however, Europe had built an almost unassailable lead over their rivals. Currie came out of the water 42 seconds down on Europe’s Dan iel Baekkegard and looked in good shape heading into the bike. The Dane’s lead however got bigger and although he turned in some tidy sectionals, Currie was unable to pull back the margin over the final two legs, finishing second, eight minutes down on Baekkegard but well clear of American Chris Leiferman, who was third. In a completely dominant per formance, the European team won eight of the 12 races throughout the competition with the other four all going to Team International.

The USA had a horror day on the course, finishing last in seven of the races.Their effort was enough to see them take home the Broken Spokes title for the last placed team.

Currie will now turn his attention toward the second Ironman World Championships of the year in Kona, Hawaii on October 8.

The 2021 edition of the champi onships was held back in May after it was postponed last year due to Covid.Currie finished a creditable third in that event. Braden Currie finished second in his individual race at the Collins Cup on Sunday morning as Team Europe dominated the competition.

Linton Muir skipped his side to success in the final round of the Hunt Trophy at the Allenton Bowling Club.

sity reverberate back and forth down the valleys.TheIrish anthem just makes you want to be Irish, which works fine for me; a study of the old family tree reveals that the Devereuxs aren’t actually Irish-French at all, we’re Irish-Irish, and in fact used to own breweries in the Emerald Isle. That seems to fit the narrative ok too. All the Islanders’ anthems are so filled with joy and warmth, with just a hint of underlying fire and passion, and are wonderful to listen to, and some of the old European ones are plain dripping with history both dark and regal so heavy with meaning you can just about see it.

The Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s hockey side rounded out their season in Canterbury Hockey’s Division One competition with victory on Saturday, beating Hornby in the third and fourth playoff.Theside, who sat near the top of the standings throughout the entire 19week season, but couldn’t quite make back-to-back finals, registered a 1-0 win at Nga Puna Wai to secure their final standing for the season. From their 17 games throughout the year, the side only lost five matches, drawing one and winning the other 11. Scott Marshall finished the season as the competition’s leading goal scorer, landing 14 goals throughout the year while Hayden Sinclair (nine) and Tim Harford (eight) also featured in the top 10 scorers from the competition. It was Harford who sealed Mid Canterbury’s victory on Saturday, nabbing the goal that proved to be the difference between the two sides, in what was a very even encounter that could have gone either way. Also on Saturday, the Mid Canterbury Senior Women’s side were in action, taking part in the seventh and eighth playoff against HSOB Burnside. Despite landing three goals, it wasn’t enough to see the side home as they lost 3-4. It concludes a very encouraging debut season in the Canterbury Hockey Division One women’s competition for the side, with plenty of progress made and experience gained looking ahead to the coming years.

The United States of America anthem? It doesn’t do what it’s supposed to any more, in a country profoundly split on so many levels, and each faction claiming the anthem as their own. Brazil’s anthem speaks headily of conquistadors charging into battle; easy to see how it inspires their sporting hordes, especially on the football pitch.

folks that deep and meaningful lyrics such as ‘Na, na-na na-na-na-na, na-nana-na, Hey Jude’ are not only instantly recognised world-wide, they have made him a billionaire.

The anthem effect

Iwas listening to a group discuss our national anthem last week, and the tone of the conversation was disparaging, to say the least.

PHOTO HARNESS RACING NEW ZEALAND

Harrison and John Morrison hold off all challenges to win Sunday’s Kurow Cup at Oamaru.

“From there I thought if I go back I would have to around the lot of them at some stage, so we went forward and it worked out reallyHarrison, good.” who has battled a number of injuries in his career, has now won six of his 23 career starts with a further six minor placings for close to $50,000 in stakes. There’s a plethora of options available for the horse over the coming months, but Morrison is keen on taking a cautious approach and spacing out the sixyear-old’sHarrisonraces.wasn’t the only Mid Canterbury pacer in the winners’ circle on Sunday, with little marvel Sister’s Delight grabbing the eighth win of her career early in the day for trainer Michael Heenan and driver Gerard O’Reilly.Last on the home turn, the pint-sized pacer stormed down the outside to just get the judge’s call in a tight finish – giving cause for celebration for her owner, Viv Barrett who was on hand for the victory.Heenan went close on two other occasions during the day too. Maiden pacer Trouble Supreme looked to have the field covered early in the day but yielded late to finish third, and smart trotter Majestic Whisper turned in a huge performance to just miss in the intermediate grade trot, also coming from near last to finish second.

The New Zealand national anthem? It might indeed be an ugly duckling, but hey, it’s OUR ugly duckling, and for most folks it resonates with patriotism, even if some of the lyrics might be a bit gauche if you actually read them out loud, completely out of context with the job they’re actually doing. But, if Sir Paul McCartney was to enter the conversation at this point, he might remind

She was only a neck off the winner, Tyron Arohanui who is raced by Ashburton brothers, Alan and Ian Neumann.

There’s nothing better than watching a plan come off. Over a month ago, Ashburton horseman John Morrison was spruiking the chances of his star pacer Harrison in Sunday’s Kurow Cup at Oamaru. A long way out from the race itself, the young trainer had identified the rural feature as a race he was keen on getting his hands on. For a few reasons. A good stake and a nice stepping stone, the Kurow Cup has always been a race for good up and coming pacers, but the major factor was the connection to the Kurow region and the Kurow Harness Racing Club for the gelding’s owners, Cheryl and Ian Munro fromAndOtematata.onSunday, both Morrison and Harrison delivered on their plan with a strong front-running performance to hold off all challenges, after an early mistake nearly curtailed all their plans. “Once he put that bound in after the start, I wasn’t sure if he was going to come back down but thankfully, he did,” Morrison said.

So when the anthems were being played at Orangetheory Stadium on Saturday night, I got to thinking about the whole genre, and where they fit into the scheme of things. Those anthems; they’re funny things. You’ve got the Aussie one, which, if sung by someone young and enthusiastic, is exciting, invigorating and absolutely suits the look Australians are striving for.

Oh, and also, I’ve read all the nursery rhymes, and I know for a fact that the ugly duckling invariably grows up to be a beautiful swan.

If, somehow, you’ve missed every major sporting event in many years, every significant national social occasion, or any event where there’s hundreds of school children massed and doing the national anthem thing, you’ll be pleased to find that the anthem is now split into two parts. The English version, written in the 1870s by the redoubtable Mr Bracken, but only adopted as our anthem in 1976, is now preceded by a Te Reo Maori version, and there’s our truly beautiful swan right there.Ifasuperb rendition of that one, such as the version preceding the Black Ferns’ demolition of the Wallaroos in Christchurch on Saturday night doesn’t bring a tear or three to your eye, then you have a harder heart than I.

The Poms, of course, are singularly and totally focused on defending one person, and fair enough too. When the universally popular current monarch pops off, in ten or twenty years’ time, there’s going to be severely major changes in the old country, which will be felt all around the globe. The Saffas are big on emotion, which fairly reflects their deeply turmoiled recent history, while when you hear the Welsh get stuck into theirs, especially at Cardiff Arms Park, you can feel the inten-sionpas-and

Harrison pulls off perfect plan

Poor execution leads to opening round defeat

Mid Canterbury United’s 17th grade side picked up a strong win on Saturday, taking down Halswell United 3-2 to see them in fourth spot on the standings, not that far behind the competi tion

Mid Canterbury endured the start no-one wants in Heartland Rugby on the weekend, going down to a passionate Buller side in Westport on Saturday after noon 34-29. A first-round loss to open the season is never pleasant. And that much was evident on the bus ride back to Ashburton after the match. But not all is lost, and what didn’t work on Saturday is easily fixed according to head coach, John“We’reSherratt.deeply disappointed, it’s never how you want to start a campaign.“Butwe can put it down to a few little things; the execution of our game plan and a bit of our own individual performance. “Nothing major, but pretty im portant aspects if you’re going to winAftergames.”atough week of uncer tainty and unease on the West Coast due to the weather the lo cals came out of the blocks, as ex pected, firing. A try 11 minutes into the match put them out in front, but when Tom Reekie scored and convert ed his own try in the 30th minute, the Hammers took control at 107. Co-captain, Adam Williamson put his name on the score sheet to extend the lead, but a late try to Buller in the first half narrowed the gap and Mid Canterbury took a 17-14 lead into the break. The Westport crowd found full voice early in the second half when first-five Jack Parker scored and converted his own try, and when he added a penalty and his side scored another try the match threatened to get away from Mid Canterbury.TriestoAdam Williamson and then Michael Hennings brought Mid Canterbury back into the match, and with just under 10 minutes to play the game was an yone’s at 29-all. A 73rd minute try to Buller proved the pivotal point though, and they were able to hold on for the victory ending a 1043-day losing streak for the Union. “They let us know about that too,” Sherratt said. “There were a lot of points in that game where we were the better side, but then we would be our own worst enemy. “Like being hot on attack and then throwing an intercept, and conceding a try a few minutes later. Just little things, not major issues.”While there was overall dis appointment in the result, the chance to get away and spend a good chunk of time together as a squad was invaluable, and seeing the way the side is coming to gether is really encouraging for Sherratt and his co-coaches, Pete Manson and Grant Polson.

Theleaders.15th grade side are in a similar position, and they too were successful on Saturday with a comprehensive 5-2 win over Waimak United who sit just above them in the standings. Mid Canterbury’s 13th grade team were also on the right side of the ledger on the weekend with a 5-3 win over Selwyn. They sit second on their points table but share points with the competi tion leaders. They might be referred to as just the little things, but do them wrong and boy, it can hurt you.

Mid Canterbury were unable to stave off the challenge of a passionate Buller in Westport on the weekend losing their first Heartland match of the season.

“There’s real unity coming along there, it’s exciting to see.” The team will assemble again tonight in Ashburton to debrief and begin preparations for their first home game of the season this weekend against Ngati Porou East Coast at the Showgrounds. It’s likely they’ll be without the services of co-captain Tyler Blackburn, who went down with an ACL injury on Saturday which at this stage will have him out of action for at least a week.

Football sides hit their straps

As the business end of the Main land Football season rapidly ap proaches, some Mid Canterbury football sides are really starting to push their case for higher hon ours.A3-all draw with St Alban’s Shirley on Saturday after noon wasn’t enough to see the Mid Canterbury reserves side knocked off the top of their perch in Division 4. They hold a five-point lead on the competition and can actual ly extend that even further this weekend when they clash with the second placed side Universi ty of Canterbury Mavericks at the Ashburton Domain. The Mid Canterbury United Senior Men’s side match on Sat urday was cancelled, adding an other weekend to a frustrating past six weeks of little football beingMethven, played.who are playing in Division 3, kept their chances of finishing in the top four alive with a 2-1 win on the Methven Domain on Saturday against FC Twenty. They currently sit sixth on the standings but are just one point behind the fourth placed side.
