The Falcon, to this point, has large ly been driven by her father, Gerard, but his early season commitment to grand stayer Laver left a door open for his daughter to step in to fill the spot, which she has in a number of trials and workouts to ready the horse for thisTheweek.task won’t be easy though. just two trials under her belt.
The stable also has Campio nessa engaged in the race, with Courtney Barnes to ride.
Set to pick up where he left off
The build-up to Cup Week begins today with a handful of runners engaged on the syn thetic track at Riccarton, and Laking is in the saddle aboard two of them.
The mare is twice placed in a fresh state, so does race well on the fresh side and has won a trial on the synthetic track. She was good enough to run in the 1000 Guineas last season, finishing seventh behind The Perfect Pink, so her class should take her a long way today.
As well as the Te Akau pair, Laking also has rides today on leading prospect High land Fling in the second race on the programme for trainer Lance Robinson, and then he’s aboard Red Sunday for Paul Harris in the last race of the day.
After a standout time wearing the tangerine army colours last season, Mid Canterbury jockey Jason Laking will be hoping to pick up where he left off today at LakingRiccarton.produced some mag ic moments in the saddle last season, no more so than his Group One victory on Belle En Rouge in the New Zealand Oaks at Trentham earlier this year – and his significant con tribution to the South Island success of the powerhouse Te Akau establishment was ac cordingly acknowledged.

As well as the Maurice Holmes Vase, tomorrow night’s meeting also sees the Basil Dean for the trotters with a small field, headed by Majestic Man to line up, while the three-year-old fillies start to ramp things up with the first heat of the illustrious Nevele R Fillies Series being held.

And in so many ways it’s a test for both horse and driver, as they look to demand the right to earn a place in the great race later in the season.
But a good hit-out, that doesn’t nec essarily result in a win, will be all that’s required for the first pass mark as they look to build condition and head down the pathway toward qualifying for the Cup.

Publications include “In Search of Ancient New Zea land”, and the TV series “Coast New Zea land”, narrating the complex geological history of Zealandia’s land and seabed. The published 2017 ‘discovery’ of Zea landia had huge impact globally. It is now 95 per cent submerged: 5.1mill.sq. km in area, 0.5 billion years old, with New Zealand and New Caledonia the largest land area. It has a 20-35km crust, with diverse features, e.g., troughs (Hi kurangi Trough, Kermadec Trench), plate boundaries, plate collisions, younger grey wacke schist (Canterbury), volca noes, rift valleys. Continental geology is surrounded by oceanic crust. The Pacific Plate is the largest on Earth. The thin, dense Pacific plate moves down beneath the thicker, lighter Australian Plate, a process known as subduction. The aim was to give speakers who had not participated in a table topics contest before, a chance to have a practice run. The five test con tenders were David, Jamie, Robert, Nicole and Mike. The Grammarian’s report on word of the day usage was discussed by Nicole. The challenge here to all, is to use the chosen word in any speech frequently and in context. Pennants last Sunday had mixed results. Jeff and the scratch boys had two good wins and now head into the Holmes semi-finals. Robbie and the boys had a loss to a strong Timaru team but will fancy their chances in the Hayes Cup. In the Patterson grade both the old dogs and pups whimpered their way round Geraldine and laid on their backs for a tummy tickle, so no semi-finals to show there. Shane and the Alex boys had an other consistent season, so they have finished as well.

This Saturday we dive into Club Champs with the round of 16 knockouts in all four grades. The senior grade is littered with great golfers. Three previous champions and some up and coming guns. My two picks for top games will be pennants team-mates Hoppy against Hamish and big hitting Terry against Mr Consistent Robbie, two great games worth the en trance fee alone. The Inters is anyone’s guess, we have six or seven previous winners, chuck in four young pups and it would be a brave man to call a winner. Two games that caught my eye, exchamp and old dog Bruce will take in young Spud in a classic tortoise and hare game, and two steadies as you go veterans Pete Morrison and Arkright will have a ding dong battle. Gaby against Leaky will be a cracker in Junior A and Buffalo Bill will be looking to roll back the years when he takes on George in Junior B. Good luck to everyone playing in the Champs, I hope you all bring your “A” game.

United’s win last week against Hampstead was a team effort. But you couldn’t understate Chelsea’s work around the court, in particular the circle. Her long-range shooting when dialled in is almost flawless and the natural understanding she has with her team mates makes her a very dangerous prospect for Celtic to deal with.
Sammy needs no introduction, but she definitely needs a mention. Another standout season on the court for her where she’s caused trouble for oppo sition teams from the first whistle to the last. If she can get the confidence flowing early, she’ll have a

Olivia McLennan (right) will be a vital player for Celtic tonight if they’re to win the Premier 1 Grand Final.
Kelsey Hart has had a huge season for United and will be looking for one more big performance tonight.
They move the ball initially with confidence which allows their free-flowing players Re becca Cochrane, Liv Hutchinson and Shannon Stockdale a bit of freedom to really narrow in on their available players, and quite often that sees space for shooters Liv McLennan and Hayley Mur phy to do their thing.
A key link in the Celtic side this year, Shannon has led the charge when it comes to the midcourt transition, and she’s done it oh so well. That quick ball from one end of the court looks easy for Celtic, and Shannon has been a huge factor in it. She’ll be busy, relentless and clever tonight and
The Premier 1 final is the pin nacle of club netball in this re gion, and after a long season it comes down to one game to crown this year’s champions.
Couple that with a determined midcourt and a strong defensive end spearheaded by the incom parable Sammy Holden, with the talented Kelsey Hart and it’s the makings of a title-winning side if they can stem the Celtic charge.
“You can’t afford to get too far ahead of yourself. But the girls are ready for this week, as ready as we can Hampsteadbe.” are a very good side, but Celtic are a level above again, and Newton said just be ing able to match it with them
How it’s all set to unfold tonight at the EA Networks Centre.
Allenton will look to cap a re markable year in their return to Premier netball when they tackle Ashburton College A in the Pre mier 2 final, while Hampstead B and Ashburton College 10A will kick the night off in the final of the Premier 3 division.
What’s happened up until now on the netball court means very little because tonight, it’s all about the big moments.
United haven’t won the Pre mier 1 title since 2007, so it’s been a long time in between drinks, but irrelevant of what happens tonight there’s plenty to be proud of from the campaign. They’ll be without Charlotte Samson this week, but welcome Hayley Tallentire back into the side as cover, but other than that it’s a full-strength line-up.
The players who can make all the difference
Catherine Kuyf and Chel sea Corbett have formed a very strong combination in the shoot ing circle, and that trust they’ve built is what Newton is hoping to see more of tonight.
Shannon Stockdale
“I thought Catherine had her best game for us of the season last week; her shooting was very good and her and Chelsea have just grown as a combination.”
shown that we can shake that off.”United’s win last week was so much of what they’ve promised all season. A complete perfor mance from one end of the court to the other.
all but useless on more than one occasion. Unit ed will need to pull something out of the hat to get the better of her tonight.
“We had a good training on Monday night and the girls walked away very happy with where we are at.
Sammy Holden
To say they haven’t been chal lenged might be a little tough on their rival teams, but it’s actual ly all been relatively easy in the end.But for coach Angela Leadley, tonight is about respect.
“It’s the midcourt where they are most damaging, their abili ty to move the ball so quickly is their strongest asset and we’ve got to try and shut that down somehow this week.”
MarkhamMatt
Putting it all on the line, one last time
While the Premier 1 final will take a lot of the attention tonight, it’s just a small part of what is a huge night for Mid Canterbury Netball.
United will have to stand tall to stem the flow if she gets her groove on.
“I think we saw it last week in their semi-final; Methven were with them for the first half but then they just accelerated away from them in the second.
Her delivery into the circle and spatial awareness alongside sup port from Maddie Walker and Samantha Collins has at times made it look easy.
Two very good sides, set to bat tle it out in the hunt for glory.
“They’ve come a long way together,” Newton said of the shooting combo.
“It’s now just about getting out there and doing the job. This week you don’t get to the end of 40 minutes and say well we can improve on that next week.”

Titles aren’t won in the first, second or even ninth round of theThey’reseason.won in finals, and to night at the EA Networks Centre the form goes out the window and it’s game on, as Celtic A and United A square off for Mid Can terbury Netball supremacy.
So much has been said and written about their midcourt prowess, but the platform being set down by Gina Woodhouse and Anna Holland in the defen sive circle has been a huge cata lyst for that.
But getting back to ground zero this week has been the main focus.“We got together on Monday night, but it was straight back into work and starting afresh.
Celtic, the only unbeaten side across all competitions this sea son, are the deserved favourites.
“It’s nil-all as far as we’re con cerned.“I’vetold the girls they’ve got to treat this week different and give it the respect it deserves. I’ve seen many good sides dominate throughout a season and then fall over at the final hurdle.”
Finals in both the Premier 2 and Premier 3 competitions will be contested with the chance, early next season, for winners to advance up a grade in 2023, and third and fourth matches will also be held on a bumper evening at the EA Networks Centre.
Main6.35pmCourt;
We take a look through the season’s form and identify four key players for tonight’s Premier 1 Final.
Celtic
Final: Celtic A v United A (Umpires: Lydia Wilson and Kevin Opele. Reserve: Heath Lyttle.)

Also; Premier 1 3rd and 4th playoff: Methven A v Hampstead A (Umpires: Jan Lee and Renee McLeod. Standby: Wendy Hop wood).7.50pmMainCourt;
It’s a long wait until 7.50pm for the first centre pass for both sides, and there will be plenty of butterflies floating around throughout today, but when that first whistle blows, it’ll be all business and two very good netball sides will go to battle in the final act of what has been an outstanding Mid Canterbury Premier Netball season.
Gina Woodhouse
Rebecca Mountford has been critical in that combination too.
