Greenpeace has launched a petition asking the Government to help support farmers to make a switch to regenerative agriculture for good. They are asking the government to back a regenerative farming scheme. More than 30,000 people have signed the petition.

Now White, her husband of nine years, is crying out for help to meet ever-rising med ical costs and to bring some of Mary’s family from the Philip pines to Ashburton on a mercy dash.Mary has no immediate family in New Zealand and the couple originally planned to fly to the Philippines.“Maryhad a terrible night last night and I just can’t see her making the long haul to Ma nila and then Manila to Bicol (the largest island in the Philip pines),’’ he said.

A climate resilience plan has been adopted by the Ashburton District Council setting out the direction to implement its climate change policy. The plan provides framework to ensure the council takes the necessary action to meet the goals of the policy.

Some had a cheeky response, including Craig Snook. He wondered if the construction of the bridge would take as long as the road cone-splattered Walnut Street roundabout to finish.

The council’s been issued the warning from Environment Canterbury (ECan) for non-compliance in regards to fish screens, which are required whenever a water take and irrigation scheme could impact fish.

A formal warning has forced the Ashburton District Council’s hand towards potentially installing around $1 million of fish screens.

‘It’s not the Golden Gate Bridge’ Massive second Ashburton bridge cost ridiculed

But those figures have disappeared deep into the Ashburton River, with the council having this week approved a business case for the now $113.6 million second urban bridge project.

The council’s infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann said the detailed design would be undertaken in this financial year, but the council “has made no commitment to the construction of the fish screens,” yet.

Council forced to act on fish screens

Chief executive Hamish Riach said after many conversations with ECan about fish screens there has been a “hardening of attitude”.“Their attitude over fish screens was quite conciliatory and supportive of trying to work through not needing them despite the consent conditions, knowing full well that council’s overall long-term goal was to close as many races as possible and that the infrastructure was potentially an expensive waste of money,” Riach said.

“We are not building the Golden Gate Bridge, surely. This sounds a crazy amount for a twolaneThebridge.’’initial bridge cost was estimated at $37m and the Ashburton District Council had budgeted $7.5m for its contribution to the project in its long-term plan.

Maybe Ivan Phillips, perhaps with his tongue firmly in his gob, came up with the best way of meeting the extra funding needs.

“Crazy looking at this and knowing it is the only bridge on the main south state highway to get to Southland,’’ she said.

The council resolved to inform ECan of its plans for the probable closure of the Pudding Hill intake and retention of the other two intakes, and to begin work on detailed design.

“Public Interest Journalism funded through NZ On Air”

That all changed when ECan gave the council a deadline of September 1 to make a decision or risk further enforcement.

Revelations that Ashburton’s controversial second bridge would cost an additional $76 million has left one bemused reader comparing it to San Francisco’s iconic“$76structure.million,’’ queried Ashburton Guardian Facebook follower Lynne Bridge.

Last year’s flooding highlighted just how vulnerable the Ashburton River bridge really is.

The massive cost increase stirred reaction from a frustrated community on the Guardian’s Facebook page, with the project now going to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for approval. That would then kick-start the biggest and most important conversation –Guardianfunding.followers were left shaking their heads at the new cost for a bridge, which has been years in discussion.

“There are a couple of little detours, but in bad weather they are usually washed out. The last time people were stranded either

in shifting freight through the South Island, was highlighted in the devastating floods in May last year. Ashburton was cut off for a short time when the bridge had to be closed because of rising flood waters and safety concerns.

With an estimated cost of around $500,000 for fish screens on each of the three intakes, and concerns about spending money on infrastructure that could soon prove redundant, the council had deferred committing to installing them.

“Omg. Think of the cones that will be involved in building another bridge! Lol,’’ a cheeky Snook posted.

The fish screens for three stock water intakes – Brothers, Methven Auxiliary and Pudding Hill – were required to be operational in February 2015.

They’re designed to protect fish, including trout, salmon and native fish, by keeping them out of water takes.

Since our Kā Huru Manu exhibition opened, the team at Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum have been busy delivering programmes to all the schools who have brought their classes in to learn about the Ngāi Tahu history and place names of our region. Our programmes have been fo cused around the fascinating story of Noti Raureka to help kids understand the jour ney of Ngāi Tahu along this ara tawhito.

most of us today would travel from Hakatere across Kā Tir itiri-o-te-moana (the Southern Alps) to Te Tai Poutini (the West Coast) via Arthur’s Pass, one of the most significant traditional trails of Ngāi Tahu is the lesser known Noti Raureka (Browning Pass).

These routes were carefully selected to pass sites where food, water and shelter were always available and to negotiate the vast swamplands in the area.

Hakatere was traversed by ara tawhito (traditional trails) which served as main highways for tākata whenua, leading to and from Te Waiateruatī (later Arowhenua), Taumutu and kāika (settlements) further afield. The Hakatere, Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers were all traditional Māori trails to the Mid Canterbury foothills, which was an important source of mahika kai for local Kāi Tahu. There was a coastal route to and from the north of the Rakaia River and inland routes to the pounamu (greenstone) trails to Te Tai Poutini (West Coast).

This eventually led to a series of feuds, with Ngāi Tūhaitara soon defeating Kāti Wairaki. Ngāi Tahu gained manawhenua over Te Tai Poutini, and assumed control of the pounamu trade.

By Danielle Campbell

By creating their own pounamu trail board game, the classes have been learning about some of the challenges faced and important mahika kai along the way.

Surveyors Browning and Griffiths suc cessfully traced the route described on the map, and Browning’s name was given to theHowever, pass.

Here’s a snippet of the Noti Raureka story as told by Ngāi Tahu Archive:

From Te Tai Poutini, Raureka trav elled over the pass, down the Waitāwhiri, and then along the Rakaia River into the Arowhenua region. Here she came across a group of Ngāi Tūhaitara people. She showed them a pounamu toki (adze) which sparked their curiosity as to how she had travelled from Te Tai Poutini.

Browning Pass, watercolour by Julius von Haast, 1866. Alexander Turnbull Library, A-149-006.

The map showing the traditional travel route over Noti Raureka (Browning Pass) was drawn by an unidentified Ngāi Tahu informant for Reverend James West Stack in 1865. The map shows a large mountain and lake at the top of the pass, and a cave where Ngāi Tahu parties camped over night. The Provincial Government had asked Stack to seek information from Ngāi Tahu kaumātua (elders) about traditional travel routes through Kā Tiritiri-o-te-moana in the hope that this might assist with determining the best route for a road to link Canterbury with the newly discovered goldfields on Te Tai Poutini.

“There’ll be some real tears on stage. I’m hoping next Anzac Day and, in the days that follow, people will remember this show.”Butit’s not just a nostalgic production or a history lesson. It’s been a challenge and magnum opus for her students.

“It was such a good idea. I wanted to present it because the students’ work was so good,” she said.Big Little Theatre members, whose ages range from nine and 19, sought to pay tribute to both world wars, so they wrote and devised a show about a show.

There’s An Element of Risk is an amalgam of dance, theatre, poetry, monologues and letters and also features “some beautiful singing”, Jackie says. It takes place during a rehearsal where the cast of 23 are preparing for the big night ahead.

There’s even a moment on the Somme or Passchendaele when soldiers in the trenches prepare to go over the top.

Ruby performed with such luminaries as Hollywood heartthrob, Tony Curtis, Flanagan and Allen, Laurel and Hardy, Norman Wisdom and Tommy Handley from ITMA (It’s That Man Again). She was a member of a number of dance troupes and revues and appeared in four movies, two for Ealing Studios, the others for an Italian film company.

The show, devised in January, was intended for April, then Covid intervened but Jackie wasn’t going to postpone it forever.

When Jackie Heffernan started devising a summer school production for her Big Little Theatre Company earlier this year, her mother’s memories and experiences came flooding back. Jackie’s upbringing was enriched with wonderful stories about the time Ruby lifted the morale of troops, either home on leave or preparing for combat in various arenas of war.

Ashburton’s “oldest new law firm” has moved into new premises at the top of the Somerset building on the corner of Burnett and East Streets.Themove, on July 18, represents a major change in a three-year transformation of the law firm. The catalyst was partner, Tim Silva, joining Russell Moon and Fail in 2019. His colleagues soon followed, taking the total RMF Silva team to 30.It’s resulted in them outgrowing their o ces in Burnett Street and seeking larger premises, yet remaining true to their core values, their region and the type of relationships they believe their clients want.

RMF Silva has moved.

Their search saw them take a space in the Braided Rivers Community Trust’s Somerset building and, in doing so, providing the trust with another long-term tenant.

Tim, Chris and their team refer to RMF Silva as the region’s “oldest, new law firm” because of its rich history in Mid Canterbury law. Through the predecessor practices of John Moon and Gary Fail, along with the strong influence

“All this means our people are at their best for their work,” he said.

Chris Robertson emphasises that while client care is the law firm’s core value, “we know in order to be at the best for our clients, our own wellbeing and families must be in order.”Hesaid that means ensuring a good balance between home and work and being active in the community.Atany given time, a good proportion of RMF Silva’s team will have a particular sports goal on the go, including the Old Ghost Ultra Marathon for Christina Clarke this year and marathons for George Davidson, the law firm’s graduate lawyer.“Itmeans lots of work, fun and team activities such as netball, tennis, squash and running help to keep our work/play balance,” he said.“While the work we do is serious and, at times, stressful, we do it in the most enjoyable way we can.”

A trough of low pressure and associated fronts continue to move away to the east of the North Island during the weekend. A ridge of high pressure pushes onto the South Island during Saturday. The ridge gradually spreads onto the North Island on Sunday in the wake of the low. The ridge then spreads onto the rest of the country on Monday and Tuesday.

It has been one year since our dearly loved Mum passed. Due to the uncertainty of when the COVID 19 levels would have allowed unlimited numbers of attendees we had a private service to farewell her. We think Mum would have preferred this smaller gathering, as she was not one for being the centre of attention. In June we interred Mum and Dads ashes into their final resting place beside Paul at the Ashburton Cemetery. Mum, you are so deeply missed, and we wish that you were still here to talk to, ask advice of, and hug, but we have to be thankful for the years that we did have you here, and carry on with the knowledge and love that you have given us. Always in our thoughts and forever in our hearts. Nicola, Simon, and our families.
