‘Lake’ renders property
When Ian and Kaitlin Blakemore moved to Lake Hood they weren’t told about any flooding issues their proper ty Nowhad. any time it rains they are left with “Lake Blakemore” as they call it. The water has left a mess of their pad docks forcing them to move their hors es off the property due to health con cerns. Two horses remain on the property because they can’t be transported. “Ideally they (the horses) shouldn’t be here at all, it is too muddy and just cruel,” Kaitlin said. “We bought this property to live, build and run stock, we didn’t buy it to jet-ski.”“Wewould have never touched it with a ten foot pole if we knew about the flooding issues,” Ian said. They bought the lifestyle block sev en years ago, and it was not until 2017 when issues started to appear after a large amount of rain left the neigh bour’s property flooded, and water started causing damage to the road. A culvert was installed to help stop the neighbours’ flooding but the water was left with nowhere to go apart from onto the Blakemores’ lower lying prop erty. Something that happens at least three times a year. In the most recent rain water was bubbling up out of the culvert and will can like that for days. Kaitlin said it got so bad they had people coming in to tell them they had burst pipes. “I understand that is our issue be cause it is our property, but the issue I have is giving water to me that doesn’t belong to me,” Ian said. “If I put banks up, which I can do, it will just mean the water will flow onto the neighbours’ property, and I don’t want to be that guy.” The Blakemores believe the problem lies with the Lake Hood Extension de velopers who did the original drainage and are in charge of the area until they hand it over to the Ashburton District CouncilLakeHood Extension project direc tor, Gary Casey said he was aware of the issues that the Blackmores were facing, and was in talks with the family. “We are working with them to find a solution,” Casey said. Whatever the Blackmores decide to do it will be costly and may just force the water onto neighbouring proper ties. They had planned to subdivide the property, but don’t believe they can un til the drainage issues are sorted. Ian’s summer project will be bringing up the ground level to where the road sits with 400 tonnes of dirt and rebuild ing $40,000 worth of fencing all at his own cost.

Dianne Rawlinson is the latest councillor to announce her time at the council table will come to an end in October. Her announcement means there will be at least three new faces on the next 10-strong Ashburton District Council with Stuart Wilson and Angus McKay previously announcing they will not be re-standing.Rawlinson said after a lot of consideration and self-debate she made her decision to not stand for re-election and informed her fellow councillors of the decision on Sunday.“This has been a big decision for me, as I have really enjoyed almost six years of life as a councillor,” Rawlinson“However, said.there is quite a bucket list waiting for me to delve into and I don’t wish to wait another three years for this.” With Wilson, McKay, and now Rawlinson stepping aside there are three empty chairs to fill at the table meaning at least three new people will sit on the next council. One of those could be a returning face, with former two-term councillor Russell Ellis submitting his nomination – with time to spare.Ellis infamously missed out on standing for a seat on the council in the last election after a technicality in his nomination form was found after nominations had closed, ruling him out of the running. The only other incumbent councillor yet to determine if they will stand is John Falloon. Mayor Neil Brown is running for a second term, and there has been no speculation of him having an opponent to date. In the western Ward deputy mayor Liz McMillan and Rodger Letham have their nominations in.Ellis is currently the only nomination received for the Ashburton Ward, but Leen Braam and Caroline Cameron have already indicated they will be standing again. In the Eastern Ward, Lynette Lovett has stated she will be re-standing.Therehave been no nominations for the five vacancies on the Methven Community Board. Local rugby’s senior club showpiece, the Watters Cup, was the finale of the day, with Methven and Southern battling it out to get their name on the trophy. It was Methven who claimed honours, winning 45-18 with a dominant performance that featured six Hampsteadtries. claimed victory in the Senior B final, beating Methven 18-15, while there was double delight for Celtic as they claimed success in both the Colts and under-16 finals. In the under-14.5 final, the Mid Canterbury Plains side had a little too much gusto for the Mid Canterbury Alps, winning 31-0.The rugby focus then extended with the naming of the Mid Canterbury Heartland Squad for the 2022 campaign. ‘Councillors’ job’ to hold council to account
Councillor Carolyn Cameron was adamant the successful delivery of the Play, Active Recreation, and Sports Strategy required a steering group.
A councillor’s job is holding the council to account without the need for external steering groups, the Ashburton District Council chief executive says. The council circled around whether a steering group was required to monitor its delivery of the Play, Active Recreation, and Sports Strategy (PARSS) but chief executive Hamish Riach made it abundantly clear that accountability is firmly in the hands of the electedCouncillorcouncillors.Carolyn Cameron was adamant that for the successful delivery of the strategy, a steering group was needed for accountability and measurable progress. She said so much time and money is invested into a strategy it is “too important to review it every five years” without regular checkpoints along the way. Cameron cited the fact that the previous strategy had not achieved all its objectives and did not want a repeat in the new strategy with the solution being a steering group, made up of external parties and councillors, to provide oversight. Riach said that while the strategy can only be delivered in partnership with external parties, the monitoring role is that of councillors.“Inthe end it’s the councillors that hold council to account,” Riach said. “External parties have a key role to play in the delivery of the outcomes, but I’m not sure an external group of people is the appropriate mechanism. “I don’t think an external steering committee is a normal or appropriate way to hold council to account for its own strategy delivery. That’s the councillors’ job.” Councillors can “expect and demand reports and information” to show how council is delivering on any strategy Riach said which was the reason PARSS did not include a steering group. It was noted that there is a regular sports forum, led by Sport Canterbury, that can act as the external function in the strategy. Cameron pushed for the inclusion of a steering group, but only had the backing of Councillor Stuart Wilson.

As for last season, it was pretty poor, he said. “Below an average crop. That was on the clover. We had all the right weather conditions up until Christmas then it kept on raining throughout January.“We fared a little bit better than the cropping farmers, but not by much,” Hantz said. Hantz said he produced mainly clover although the last couple of years had done a bit of manuka up in Kaikoura. “This did quite well and was pleasing compared to how they went the year before. I think there was a pocket of manuka around Kaikoura that seemed to do quite well, but in other places like the West Coast manuka was pretty poorly,” Hantz said. OK, peeps. Let’s hear from all of you out there in keyboard warrior land who thought the Birmingham Commonwealth Games would be a flop. You’re the brigade who turned your noses up at the Games, suggesting it’s an out-of-date institutionalised event in decline and was nothing more than a reminder of appalling empire practices, like racism and slavery. Speak up my friends. Don’t be shy. Now’s your chance. But no. Just silence. Funny that. But I guess that’s what happens when New Zealand success, and raw athlete emotion, is captured so brilliantly on the tele in the heat of competition, as medals are won and lost, as dreams are shat tered or realised, and as anthems are played and flags raised. And we’ve seen that in droves since the Birmingham Games began, with our patriotic juices flowing after a fabulous New Zealand start. So many highlights. So many talking points. Where to start? You can’t go past so likeable New Zealand men’s individual sprint triathlete Hayden Wilde, a silver medal winner who may well have been robbed of gold after cruelly copping a draconian looking time penalty. Wilde, need we remind anyone, was controversially hampered by a 10-second time penalty re ceived for unfastening his helmet before he had parked his bike in the transition stage from cycle to run in his event on the opening day of the Games. He led from the start and was eventually beaten by 13 seconds by England’s Alex Yee before rightly protesting the decision, aiming to get the result changed so that he could share gold with his good mate. It could be weeks before a decision on the protest is known but the fact that triathlon event officials could not decide on the day after viewing and reviewing race footage for over an hour suggests it was a poor decision made by an overzealous official wanting to make his mark. That’s disappointing with a capital D, folks.Fortunately, there have been many feel-good stories, with Auckland teenage swimmer Cam eron Gray really standing out. Gray was a shock bronze medal list in the 50m butterfly final. The podium finish was such a surprise that it completely caught out Gray, who didn’t bother bringing his team medal ceremony tracksuit with him to the venue. So what did he do? He borrowed tracksuit pants off a Kiwi swimming colleague and the shirt off double gold medal winner Lewis Clareburt. “He brought all the wrong gear,” a smiling Clareburt said. For personal reasons, the upset men’s 15km scratch race gold medal win by Southlander Corbin Strong has also been an early highlight as part of a sensational display by the New Zealand team at the London velodrome. Strong was a neighbour in Ota tara, near Invercargill, and went to the same primary school as my boy where he said he “dreamed of a moment when they’d play the national anthem on a stage like this’’.He got his moment, but it came the hard way. The 22-year-old, whose older brother is also a professional road cyclist, had to overcome true adversity to reach the top. That happened a few years back when he crashed into a parked car on a training ride, breaking his spine in an incident that could’ve ended his career. It didn’t and he, his family and friends, and Cycling New Zealand, were no doubt thank ing their lucky stars about that on Sunday night when he won our sixth track-cycling gold in a record-equalling haul. And it’s a haul that’s shown without doubt that there’s still plenty of life in the Commonwealth Games yet. Long may it continue.

The Sapphires finished three spots below Mid Canterbury at the bottom of the table with two wins from their 11 matches, so Mid Canterbury will fancy their chances of getting back-to-back victories on the board again this weekend. Saturday wasn’t quite as happy hunting for the Mid Canterbury Senior men’s team however, as they suf fered a 1-3 loss to the table-topping Carlton Redcliffs side. The result potentially puts them in the danger ous position of being knocked out of the top three in the standings as they head into the bye round this week, ahead of the final round of the normal season on Saturday, August 13. They play Marist in the final round, a match they should win given their rivals are the bottom-ranked team in the competition, but a slip-up there and two wins for Hornby over the final two weeks would see the two sides locked together on competition points ahead of the playoffs. At St Bede’s College on Saturday, the men’s side were no match for the high-flying Carlton Redcliffs side, who scored three goals to run away comfortable win ners. Scott Marshall found the back of the goal for the Mid Canterbury side, but it wasn’t enough to repel the effort of the competition favourites.

Whiting steps up to the plate
Set your clocks Mid Canterbury, it’s Commonwealth Games time. After a frenetic opening first few days to the games in Birmingham in which Kiwis have been clouded in gold, silver and bronze along with a bit of controversy – Mid Canterbury gets its chance to get behind one of our own, early tomorrow morning.

Former Ashburton College student Hayley Whiting, who now resides in Mount Maunganui, takes her place in the Women’s 87kg + weightlifting class from 5.45am. Whiting heads into the event ranked fourth in the Commonwealth for her particular category, giving her a good chance of adding to New Zea land’s already impressive medal haul through the first five days of compe tition.Whiting’s selection to head to the games alone is a remarkable story of determination and dedication. She’s long been a noted weightlifter in the New Zealand ranks, after pick ing up the sport by chance at Otago University while studying. “I still need to stop and think about it sometimes, you know – it’s been a tough road to get to this point. “But to get the chance to go to the Commonwealth Games … I’m a girl from Ashburton, it’s not a big sport at home, so it’s pretty incredible,” she told the Guardian earlier this year. To qualify for the event, Whiting had to overcome New Zealand Olym pian, Kanah Andrews-Nahu at an International event to book her spot to Birmingham – lifting a clean and jerk weight of 123kg – five kilograms heavier than she’d ever lifted before to win – and set a New Zealand re cord in the process. Mid Cantabrians can catch Hay ley in action from 5.30am tomorrow morning on Sky Sport Channel 601. Hayley Whiting is in action tomorrow morning at the Commonwealth Games in Bir mingham.
In the face of adversity, Hamp stead stood tall and proud to claim Senior B rugby bragging rights on Saturday. Their epic final against Meth ven for the Second Grade Cup was the perfect taste-test for the Wat ters Cup later in the afternoon, with a little bit of everything on offer from start to finish. And in matches where perhaps the Hampstead of old might have crumbled and let go of the pow er struggle, on Saturday they in stead stood staunch and tall and fought right to the very end to claim an 18-15 win. The brutal match featured everything that is good about rugby – a titanic defensive strug gle from both sides, powerful ball-running antics across the paddock and a little bit of drama, with three yellow cards dished out during the match. After almost half an hour of smashing into each other at every opportunity, it was Meth ven who broke the deadlock and scored first. Winger Sam Peek found himself with a bit of room and plenty of work to do, but put his raw speed on display as he dashed around defenders to score untouched, with Louis Mc Donald adding the extras to put Methven in front 7-0. Hampstead had their own re sponse though, and Matthew Iakopo scored his side’s first points just minutes later, with Junior Esae’s boot bringing the scores level once again. Ease’s powerful boot was to the fore throughout the match, whether it was clearance kicks as his side scrambled through an other defensive phase, or from the tee with no fear in taking a shot from long range. He slotted two penalties early in the second half to put his side out to a six-point lead, but when Methven scored through Kurt Johnstone in the 74th minute, it looked like the tide might have beenInstead, turning.Hampstead respond ed automatically again, this time through Ben Faasavala and with just minutes remaining on the clock Hampstead were up 18-12. Methven threw all they had at the Hampstead defence which, despite at one stage being down to 13 men, was big and brave to the very end. A late penalty from Charlie Brown gave Methven a sniff at 1518 – but an opportunity to bring the scores level a few minutes lat er was turned down in favour of a kick for the corner, which Hamp stead negated and wound down the clock to seal a historic victory for the club. A victory which gave further justification to the club’s decision to step away from senior rugby this season and instead focus on building their Senior B scene. Hampstead 18 (Matt Iakopo, Ben Faasavala tries; Junior Esae 2 pen, conv) beat Methven 15 (Sam Peek, Kurt Johnstone tries; Louis McDonald conv, Charlie Brown pen).

Dominant Methven claim Watters Cup
In the search for perfection, Methven came close on Saturday as they marched to Watters Cup glory. A 20-minute period approaching the end of the first half aside, the Mallards – as they’ve chosen to be known – were all but flawless as they dismantled, and at times rendered ineffectual, a very good Southern side to claim the famed piece of silverware 45-18.Tradition might suggest that the Watters Cup is supposed to be a close-fought and down to the wire game of rugby, but Satur day bucked that trend. Two tries in the opening 15 minutes, as the Methven attack ran rampant, threat ened to see the match explode early. Livewire hooker Ben Bartlett burrowed his way over within the first two minutes as Methven piled on the pressure, and when Tyler Blackburn spotted a half-gap near to the line a little later and took it, they were all of a sudden 14-0 up. Southern were never going to take things lying down though. They stepped it up a notch as well and after an early jitter, Tom Middleton found his kicking boots and slotted back-to-back penalties, before the always-lurking Adam Williamson ran onto a ball close to the line and scored, which with the extras added saw the score move to a scarcely believable 14-13 in the space of eight minutes. Methven counter-reacted though before the halftime break, spearheaded by their excellent loose forward trio of Josh Hark ness, Harry Bonifant and the powerful Michael Hennings, and they soon found themselves back in attacking territory with Brenton Connell finding some room to move right on halftime to score. Tom Reekie, who was faultless through the first half of the game, added the ex tras and Methven went to the break up by eight,Southern’s21-13. reputation for being a good second-half team would have had the Methven camp cautious as they turned around, and for the first 15 minutes of the second half neither side gave an inch and the match looked destined to go the wire.
PHOTO
But then the floodgates opened. Hugh Griffiths started the charge, run ning through the Southern defence and taking four players over the line with him to score, before Reekie spotted a gap and darted through himself minutes later. By the time Hennings barged his way over at the 70-minute mark, the match had gone from being on tenterhooks at the halftime break to seeing Methven in cruise-control with time running down up 42-13.Southern weren’t finished though, and kept digging deep like any good side would, and they were rewarded with a late try to Jacob Pairama, but it was too little too late with the game well in the bag. Methven had something else to say too, and it came from one of the club’s favour ites, Reuben Early. With time up on the clock and a penalty awarded, the replace ment was given the ball to sign, seal and deliver the match from about 35 metres out and he duly delivered, sending it through the uprights to put a rubber stamp on the performance as the final whistle blew. An injury-ridden Southern side, despite being beaten, could still hold their heads high in the post-match after another great season on the paddock. Captain Hamish Mackenzie was im mense in the final performance, while mid-fielder James Hastings did a lot of the grunt work early doors with the ball in hand and helped get his side back into the match in the first half. Beaten finalists in the Watters Cup and beaten semi-finalists in the Combined competition will feel a little hollow, but giv en the nature of both beasts, there’s plenty to be proud of in the southern reaches of Mid Canterbury this year. To single out just a few of the Methven side from the match wouldn’t be doing jus tice to the team effort. Coaches Shane Enright, Jason Kjestrup and Alby Harkness have built a strong col lective unit this season – one which looks set to hit the ground running again in 2023 starting with the Combined Competition. But that’s for next year, right now it’s about the present and Methven being Wat ters Cup country, once more. Methven 42 (Ben Bartlett, Tyler Blackburn, Brenton Connell, Hugh Griffiths, Tom Reekie, Michael Hen nings tries; Reekie 6 conv, Reuben Early pen) beat Southern 18 (Adam Williamson, Jacob Pairama tries; Tom Middleton 2 pen, conv).
