Toby Lee returns to direct his own show
When Ashburton’s Toby Lee and Eli Davis discovered a Broadway song called Boys, they knew they’d found some thingTheyspecial.liked it, researched it further and discovered it came from a show entitled Glory Days that had a brief run on Broadway. “It was a four-man musical that appealed to us,” Toby Lee said.“The comedic bravado be tween characters had rele vance to our age group.” When the National Acade my of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA) in Christchurch introduced a project this year for third year students where they “could do anything of sig nificance”, Lee chose to direct, produce and tour Glory Days. “For me it was the most educational thing I could do about the industry and how everything functions,” he said. At midday today the show will be presented to sen ior students from Lee’s old school, Ashburton College, and will then run for two nights on Friday and Saturday in the Ashburton Event Cen tre. It has a further season at Christchurch, Greymouth and possibly Timaru. “The story line is about Will and captured the magic of his last year at high school as he struggles to face the con sequences of becoming an adult,” Lee explained. “The other characters in the musical are his final year col leagues at school who return after 12 months.” Lee said the music is beau tiful, the quality of singing will impress and “there’s some thing throughout the produc tion the audience will relate to.” However he warns the show contains profanity and is for a mature audience. Participation and partnership in local government
The Ashburton District Council is envisioning a more active and financially sustainable Ashburton Airport as it asks for community feedback on a new draft plan for its future.
Nominations are starting to roll in, as the lead-up to the local elections in October ramps up. To stand for election nominees only need to meet three requirements – to be aged over eighteen, a New Zealand Citizen, and enrolled to vote. In nearly three months’ time, a new Council and Methven Community Board will embark on another three years, making decisions on the economic, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing of this community.

Achieving these four aspects needs partnerships and community input. That is why we are asking the public to submit their thoughts on a draft 30-year Development Plan for the Ashburton Airport to become financially self-sufficient. groups that made it all happen. The Ashburton District Council was delighted to be involved in a free community event that celebrated EA Networks’ contribution to the community and also promoted the Tinwald Domain, Plains Vintage Railway and the spirit of collaboration. Another important way that Council partners to foster wellbeing is through providing community grants and funding. Community groups in the Ashburton District have the chance to apply for a range of different grants and funding rounds throughout August. Whether it is helping put on a threeday event, your vote in three months’ time, contributing to a 30-year plan, or your contribution in the next three years of Council – your efforts big and small are all valuable contributions. It is your vision and participation now that affects decisions made over the next many years. Now is as good a time as ever to participate in your community and your local government.
The draft Ashburton Airport Development Plan proposes development of three new hangar ‘precincts’ on the 100-hectare site, including a hangar-home precinct where people can live in the same building as their Chiefaircraft.Executive, Hamish Riach, said the growing popularity of the facility, increased interest in building new hangars and the Council’s desire to see the Airport become financially self-sufficient had highlighted the need to create a long-term strategy. “This draft Plan establishes an exciting 30-year vision for a thriving airport that contributes to our District’s social and economic well-being.”
The proposed commercial hangar precinct would allow for around eight hangars to be built along the boundary with Seafield Road, where a skydiving business is already located. Mr Riach says that there’s already been increased interest from commercial operators, with the Council recently approached by a company interested in “We’re still discussing the proposal, but it’s an example of the airport’s potential to contribute to our local economy and why it’s important that we get a good plan in Theplace.”draft was developed following meetings and surveys with airfield users and neighbouring residents. Last Wednesday July 27, Ashburton District Council adopted a new Play, Active Recreation and Sport Strategy. The strategy is formed around the vision of everybody included, having fun being active and includes an action plan to achieve this. The action plan includes a range of initiatives such as multi-use sport field development at EA Networks Centre and sand-based sport facilities for beach volleyball and handball. Other ideas that came from the community through consultation included piloting women’s only swim and gym sessions at the EA Networks Centre and a focus on playground accessibility. Sport participation for rangatahi (youth) was a focus and a new fee structure for the EA Networks Centre was also in the plan . “Our community told us that 2022 poses a range of barriers that prevent participation in play, active recreation and sport, so we addressed those aspects when drafting the strategy,” Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said. Main issues facing the sector included Covid-19, making sure we include ageing and diverse populations, digital transformation and the cost to participate.

It’s a peculiar feeling being able to remember something from your childhood so vividly when you sometimes struggle to remember what you had for din ner a few nights ago, isn’t it? Memories are wonderful things, what the brain stores away for safe keeping to think back and reminisce on is such an unmit igated process and triggering those memories can often come at the most random of occasions. A couple of newsy items struck those chords this week. One in print and one on social media. If you’re a follower of the Ash burton Guardian Facebook page, you’ll be well aware of the regular flashbacks and lookbacks that are posted frequently on the page. They’re a wonderful walk down memory lane for people each day and often attract plenty of traffic, with comments from people involved or indirectly involved in the subject Ashburtonmatter.Guardian sub-ed itor, Steve Devereux, who has been with the business since what seems like the beginning of time, is in charge of those delec table morsels, and on Tuesday he posted one that piqued the interest of many. It was an image of just one man, reading a children’s book to a classroom, but it struck home for so many people in this community, because they knew exactly who it was and what it wasTheabout.man pictured was pop ular local identity, Paul ‘Pup’ Chamberlain, making one of his many visits to schools around the community sharing a positive message to young minds. The book? Sam the Ram Goes to the Show. A staple in any child’s education at some point during their schooling years with Pup almost always the man behind the delivery. I know personally the vivid memories of seeing a policeman waltz into school for a visit and thinking someone must be only in trouble to soon be smiling and laughing as Pup went about his job in such a manner that left an indelible mark on a young mind.

MarkhamMatt They must have been very good at their jobs if this writer, with a memory like a sieve, can still picture their visits as though they were yesterday. “
The second newsy item came in Tuesday’s Guardian with news of the pending retirement of Life Education tutor, Jane Hooper. There were hundreds of interac tions to that piece of news with people from all around Mid Can terbury sharing their memories. In such a similar way to Pup and his school visits, the arrival of the Life Education truck at the schoolyard was always a moment of excitement – and from what I understand – even decades on from when I last visited Harold the Giraffe and his friends, it’s still very much the same now. So much of what we all learnt in the classrooms as youngsters has disappeared from our minds by now, but there’s those little morsels of information and mo ments from within our education that stick with us It could be a puppet giraffe talking about your gluteus maxi mus while you lie back in a trailer unit looking at an impressive light display that resembles the stars, or a colourful policeman spread ing a good message about safety around the community to an engaged classroom of youngsters. There really is no rhyme nor reason. What it means, it’s nice to be able to celebrate those moments in life and the people that had a part in making them. They must have been very good at their jobs if this writer, with a memory like a sieve, can still picture their visits as though they were yesterday.

Mid Canterbury Rural Women NZ Provincial As I write my Annual Report for Mid Canterbury RWNZ Provincial AGM, I re flect on what a caring community we have. From the Flood of ’21 effort, to the caring for others, who have challenged circumstances, be it from sickness, inju ry or surgery, our members have done so much to help others, especially with so much Covid about. Those who attended the Women’s Chainsaw Information Day, had a great time learning about safety, mainte nance and how to operate these ma chines. The Movie fundraiser was well patronised, and we thank you for your contribution, which will benefit Life Education and our Mid Canterbury RW Scholarship Programme. Having our RWNZ National Chair, Na tional Board Chair and National Finance Chair attend the Region 2 Conference was a privilege and I’m sure we all learnt something. Guest speakers, The Two Raw Sisters were delightful, and their demonstra tion made their Salad look so easy to Pleasemake.
Ashburton County Lions President Jeanette welcomed mem bers and one visitor to her first meeting as new ApologiesPresident.were received. Being the first meeting for the new Lions Year, we did not have a Guest speaker, allowing members plenty of time to enjoy each other’s company and discuss future ac tivities and domestic matters within the club for the incoming year. Each month we will have a secondhand book sale, members to bring along a book they no longer want and hopeful ly can find something interesting to buy to take home and read. We have lots of interesting projects and events planned for the next year. Our annual “Spud in a Bucket” com petition will be held again this year for those members wishing to reveal their gardening expertise. Members will provide some baking as required for the Daycare unit; Rugby Gatekeeping duties during August and September; the clubs annual raffle raising funds for Camp Quality in September; annual Toot for Tucker November 21; visits to other Lions clubs in our district; Meals on Wheels; The Festive Forest event in December; the sale of Lily Bulbs; one or two small catering functions; a Mah jong tournament next year; collection of Toiletries to donate to a local charity to celebrate Lions World Service day in October; ongoing collection of old or foreign coins for the national Heads up for Kids charity. Apart from the club projects, members enjoy time for some fun and fellow ship, a group of members going to see the show Jesus Christ Superstar; our monthly Friday luncheon is always a good chance for a catch up; a possible trip to the Wearable Art Show in Wel lington next year; a mystery bus trip coming up in October; regular monthly movie nights; and a Christmas party. This month “Birthday” girls were ac knowledged followed by the Tailtwist ers fining members for their misde meanours, concluding the evening on a happy note. Ashburton Golf Club A very cold Saturday, saw many golfers pick, staying home in front of the fire ahead of venturing onto the course, but over 50 hardy souls did turn up to play round 1 of the DCL Cup. Ron Carlson led the way with a superb net 68, just pipping Gerard Gallagher on countback. Gaby and Rob Pawsey had a 69 and George Brown was one shot further back on 70. The course was playing long, so well done to any one who shot their handicap or better. The starting on Saturday, with the frost delay, seemed to flow a lot smoother, just using the two-tee start, thanks to Terry’s organising. Hopefully the frosty mornings are numbered but please be patient, we are lucky to be out playing on such a beautiful course. This Saturday we have round 2 of the DCL Cup. This is also another counter for the RMF Silva Cup, so get your selves out into the fresh air and give it a Onnudge.Sunday we have three pennants’ games going on. Jeff and the scratch A team are heading down to North Otago take on a strong Gleniti side. Shane and the Alex boys will wind up their season at Mayfield against Point. Then all roads lead to Rakaia for the big Patterson grudge match. The old dogs sit fourth on the ladder with the pups yapping on the bottom rung trying to snap at the souls of the old fella’s golf Earlyshoes.team news is bad for the dogs. Ever-presents Bruce and Arkright are unavailable, but the flying Dutchman is back in. Honorary old dog Blair will lead the team out with Greig. Paddy and Tim will form the engine room. The number 5 spot is still to be final ised, hopefully some hero will step up and Gaby will bring them home at six. For the pups, self-appointed captain and local legend Jordy has picked himself at number one partnering Tommy at two. Dylan is hoping to get over a mega dose of covid, flu, monkey pox and mad cow disease so he can take his spot at three. Young Spud was down to play four, but now he knows he is playing Tim it could be a withdraw. Then Mitch and Jimmy will anchor the team. The Muttz Nutz trophy is up for grabs, points for the league on offer but more importantly, bragging rights for the rest of the Shouldyear.bea cracker. Results and stories next week. Till then good golfing. Ashburton MSA Petanque Club With the Canterbury Doubles and Sin gles Tournaments, kindly sponsored by The Warehouse, due to be held this coming weekend, more work is being done on the pistes. Colin has built more bench seats which are due to be set along the back fence, so our area is looking very smart. August is a busy month with players going to Dunedin to compete in differ ent Triples Tournaments two weekends in a row, then at the end of the month we are holding the Club Mixed Singles. Interclub also starts this month, which is held between Ascot, Papanui, Christchurch and Ashburton at the var ious grounds. A display board is being set up in the library next week, so take a look at that and it might just inspire you to join us. Remember we play Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday starting about 1pm at 115 Racecourse Road. Equipment and tui tion are available. Of course, with this Saturday being a Tournament Day, there will be no so cial play but you are most welcome to come and watch.

U3A Ashburton Kay Baird, founding member of Ash burton U3A in 2013, was made a Life AbbasMember.Nazari spoke of his experiences fleeing Afghanistan as a 9yr old child with his family, leaving the small Cen tral Highland village, Sungjoy, Bama yan province, similar to Central Otago. The family is Hazara, an ethic minority dating to Genghis Khan, who left “The Thousand” troops. A minority sect was dangerous when the Taliban (“People of the Book”) came back into power, precipitating the need to leave Afghanistan as refugees. After a clandestine lorry trip across country and into Pakistan, the family, and 480 others, boarded an overcrowded, un seaworthy fishing boat, for Christmas Island. Rescued by the container ship Tampa, they ran afoul of Australian pol itics around John Howard’s re-election bid. Iconic Grand National Carnival under threat
A lack of horses for jumping races at this year’s Grand National Carnival at Riccarton has many pundits wondering if the future of the iconic races within the week are better served further north.
The future of one of New Zea land’s most iconic weeks of rac ing is under threat. Saturday will mark the begin ning of the annual Grand Na tional Carnival at Riccarton Park – a three-day meeting across the space of week, which includes the running of both the Grand National Steeplechase and also Hurdles.Thecarnival also features the Winter Cup, a feature flat race and while its future in Canter bury, and indeed the South Is land, looks safe for the foreseea ble future, the features involving fences and jumps do not. A decision to remove jumps racing from the South Island by New Zealand Thoroughbred Rac ing last year has had a dramatic impact on the number of entries for this year’s jumping features, and that combined with recent wet weather leaving northern trainers hesitant to travel to race on a really wet track has left num bers very low. Two jumping races will be held on Saturday’s first day of the car nival with just 12 runners across both races, eight of which come from the stable of Kevin Myers – a frequent traveller to and support er of South Island racing. “There are a few factors caus ing the numbers shortage. Obvi ously, we don’t have local jump ers down here anymore, which even in recent years were good for one or two more horses per race,” Riccarton Park boss, Tim Mills said earlier this week. “And there has been a general shortage of horses in the open jumps races, which doesn’t help when they have to travel.” With numbers so light, NZTR will be forced to sit down and discuss with the Canterbury Jockey Club who host racing at Riccarton the viability of both Grand Nationals remaining in Christchurch into the future. It is understood that there is still interest in holding jumps races on the mainland from many trainers, but with a num ber of tracks earmarked for clo sure in the near future, if not doomed already there’s a lot of uncertainty as to where the leadup races to the carnival could be held.Aside from the jumping fea tures a strong card of action is set down for Saturday, with a full field set to contest the $100,000 Winter Cup in its 125th running.

Game of the night
PHOTO SUPPLIED Former Mid Cantabrian, Hayley Whiting can proudly add a fifth placing at the Commonwealth Games to her resumé after a brave performance in Birming ham yesterday morning. The New Zealand record hold ing weightlifter was unable to continue her heroics of the past 12 months and make the podi um of the event, but lost no fans with her beaming smile and true grit when up on the stage com peting. The Women’s 87kg+ compe tition started brightly for the former Ashburton College stu dent, as she appeared to breeze through her first attempt in the snatch discipline, comfortably lifting 93kg to put her right in contention.Buttwo mishits at her next two attempts were incomplete, falling well short of her personal best mark of 101kg and leaving Whiting with plenty of ground to make up on some heavy hit ters who registered big numbers during the first of the two events. Not out of the action but need ing to make up a lot of ground to be considered a medal contend er in the clean and jerk round, Whiting joined the party late in the round at 116kg, but ap peared to go light-headed as she went to complete in the jerk in her first attempt. She returned to the stage mo ments later and completed the first weight strongly, but was unable to push on in her final at tempt, faltering at 121kg. Whiting finished fifth overall in the competition, 16kg off the competition winner, Australian Eileen Cikamatana who claimed gold for the Commonwealth Games record, obliterating the rest of the field. Whiting wasn’t the only Mid Cantabrian in action overnight. Lawn bowls official Wendy Suttie also graced the screens during the live coverage, as she took control of the greens during the gold medal match between India and South Africa and the bronze medal match between New Zealand and Fiji in the Women’s Fours. Suttie was selected to officiate at the games earlier this year –continuing an impressive rise up the official ranks in both New Zealand and globally. The New Zealand women’s fours side won their match, claiming the bronze medal, in a comprehensive fashion.
A clash of the titans – titans of the local netball variety. Both Celtic A and Hampstead A will head into tonight’s round Mid Canterbury Netball’s pre mier competition with an un beaten record next to their name in the championship round. In what could well end up be ing a taste-tester to this year’s final, which is now only three weeks away, another encounter of the season’s two leading teams will again have those who trek to the EA Networks Centre on the edge of their seats, riding every pass and willing every shot on goal. With three-from-three records in the championship round thus far, a winning result tonight will all but ensure who takes out the all-important top spot heading into the final week of the normal season next week. So, despite both being teams assured of their place in the knockouts, there’s a lot riding on the match up in the middle game of the evening. But it’s not the only match of intrigue tonight, as the race to the finals heats right up. United can secure their place in the top three with victory to night over Mt Somers in the late game. They’re currently five points clear of the fourth placed Meth ven, so success will be enough to see them unpassable and avoid meeting the winner of tonight’s Celtic and Hampstead clash in the semi-finals in a fortnight. For Mt Somers, victory would likely lift them off the bottom of the standings and offer a small window in which they could sneak into the top four, should a few results go their way. It’s perhaps Methven who have the most to lose, however. Fourth, but only a solitary win clear of both Mt Somers and Southern, they can’t afford a de feat tonight with a final round clash against Hampstead next week. They take on Southern, who find themselves in a similar posi tion to Mt Somers, needing a win this week to stay in touch with the pack and potentially sneak in the back door to the playoffs. Down in Premier 2 another top of the table clash is set to take place.Allenton lead the group by three competition points, but could be overtaken by Celtic B tonight if they fall on the wrong side of the final score. Rakaia will be out to bounce back from their defeat to Allen ton last week when they play Ashburton College B in the first game of the evening, before a battle of Methven unfolds in the middleMethvengame.B and Methven Shearmac will go toe-to-toe, with the latter better poised to grab a semi-final spot should they be victorious.InPremier 3 the trend contin ues with the competition’s two top sides, Ashburton College 10A and Hampstead B set to battle it out on the court. The college team is the clear leader, but both Hampstead sides, B and U18 aren’t that far behind.TheUnder 18 side should get a win on the board in their match against United B, while the oth er game of the group, Methven Humm v Ashburton College B also has a lot riding on it,

In the first of a number of matches in the coming weeks and months, the side – many of whom harbour aspirations for playing for the Mid Canterbury Combined Schools 1st XV next year in the new-look UC Cup, claimed a 6210 win on the school’s back field. Under the tutelage of noted coaches James Roderick and also Todd Houston, the side were ex cellent from the moment they lined up to produce a rousing haka before the match right through until the final whistle at full time. Playing in tricky conditions with high wind and some moisture in the air, the Mount Hutt side took a 24-10 lead into the halftime break with tries coming from Soni Ahotaeiloa, Tom McKenzie, Zane Harmer and Isaiah Carter. Turning around with the wind at their backs, the team kicked on the afterburners and added another six tries to the scoreline without conceding a point, with Harmer picking up his second and then third try for the day. The side’s captain, Reuben Brown turned in a tidy perfor mance from the driver’s seat, dominating the breakdown and set piece while leading from the front defensively, with his troops rallying around him. The side is playing home and away fixtures against Kaiapoi but also St Kevin’s College and also Roncalli College before the cam paign comes to a close.

Hayley Whiting finished fifth in the Women’s 87kg weightlifting class at the Commonwealth Games yesterday.
Premier 1 – Celtic A v Hampstead A How could you not highlight this match-up. The two best form sides of Premier 1 this season, set to battle it out for the third time, with Hampstead hopeful of finally knocking the green machine over. That’s a task no one has managed this season, but if there’s a side to do it, then it has to be Hampstead. With strength across the court from both sides the individual battles will be just as exciting as the collective.
Table toppers set to battle it out Hampstead will be out to upset Celtic in Premier 1 netball action tonight at the EA Networks Centre.
