Maddison Gourlay It’s funny how things happen. Just ask the owners of the family-run Fat Albert Smokehouse near Carew. Farmers Juliet and Alasdair (known as Ju and Ali) McLeod were driving south by Fairlie one day when they saw a business for sale on the highway. “Ali was looking for a project for when he retires and saw that and thought it was perfect,” said Jennifer McLeod, a Fat Albert Smokehouse part owner, operator and daughter-in-law of Juliet and Alasdair. “But Ali hasn’t quite been ready to retire from the farm yet, so they brought myself and my husband Tom along to get it up and running. “I never expected to be smoking salmon.” And so, back in 2018, the Fat Albert Smokehouse artisan food business began, which for the McLeods included spending a month with the previous owners, who passed on tips around preparing and serving the freshest and most delicious traditionally smoked goods. “We rented a campervan and parked outside of his shop near Fairlie and we took turns living in it while he trained us,” McLeod said. “It was an intense month course.” The McLeods slowly began perfecting their craft with smoked salmon and duck breast. Now they’re looking at adding additional items, with cold smoked venison in development. And the pandemic hasn’t really hit the smokehouse too hard, because they also have a contract with High Country Salmon in the Mackenzie District. Before Covid-19 hit, they had also been supplying some local Ashburton

cafes, but that hasn’t resumed yet because of the stress on some of those small businesses. Fat Albert Smokehouse does a lot of their trading through their website, but in the summer months, Ju and Ali, can be found at farmers’ markets. They’re now in the early stages of rebranding and hope to have that completed by the beginning of February. “We are making it our own,” she said. “It feels like the right time.” Fat Albert Smokehouse also thinks it’s the perfect time for the Ashburton

Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local - Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign because, as a small business themselves, they know how much support local companies need. It’s that local feel that Jennifer loves so much. She moved from Canada to New Zealand in 2014, settling in Mayfield and has never left. With the Fat Albert Smokehouse humming, and two young children and the love of rural Mid Canterbury, you get the feeling that she and the family wouldn’t dream of leaving anytime soon.

Curves Gym – working it out Weigh to go for popular women’s gym

Fast facts

Maddison Gourlay Curves in Ashburton is more than a gym for owner Viv Williams. It’s also a community. Williams, who opened the Curves Ashburton branch way back in 2006, treats everyone that walks through the door as a close friend, because to her they are. Williams clearly enjoys the close relationships she and her team have with those clients at Curves in Ashburton, which is a women’s only gym catering for all fitness levels. “Our members are awesome in the true sense of the word,” Williams said. “Our numbers allow us to know our members well. “But they are amazing, when we do something for the community, like our current Christmas present gathering for the grandparents’ association, we had a massive response and our members have been so generous.” Williams is grateful her Curves move has been such a life-changing success. She moved to Ashburton from Hastings 15 years ago, wanting to relocate to Canterbury because she had grown up in Timaru. But before her Curves story began, Williams was intimidated by traditional gyms. She was

looking for a more rehabilitation focus and strength training. She stumbled upon Curves Hastings and never looked back. Moving to Ashburton, and not getting the job she had applied for, it was at that moment Williams thought: “I’ll open my own

Curves here.” Setting out to find a location, it took 20 minutes’ driving before she found the for-lease sign at 222 Havelock Street. “And the rest is history,” Williams said. Now, Williams can be found in

Curves 90 per cent of the time, always saying hello to members and happy to help. When asked how she feels about her job helping women get active and be there to see their journey, she said it was “tearful”. “It’s a huge privilege,” she said.

“It’s rewarding to create positive change and see women make that positive change in their lives. “I really enjoy being part of that.” Like any gym, it involves some hard work though. Curves is designed like a circuit, with equipment and cardio stations next to each other, but the machines work on hydraulics. “Nothing beats hydraulics. There is no need to lift heavy weights to prepare the machine,” she said. “The harder you push, the more resistance you feel.” Now, though, as gyms push their way through the challenges of the pandemic, Williams said she was right behind the Ashburton Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local - Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is community-boosting and business supportive campaign. “I am grateful to be a part of it,’’ she said. “(After) seeing too many businesses close due to lack of support, this campaign will make a lot of difference. “I could talk about this place (Curves) for a long time.”

Three Waters: Mayor calls process ‘farcical’ if decided back in June Adam Burns

Claims that the mandating of Three Waters was agreed to months ago has added further controversy to the contentious shake-up of local water infrastructure. Ashburton councillor Stuart Wilson has described the proposals as a farce, a view which has been echoed by district mayor Neil Brown “if found to be true”. Cabinet papers, revealed last week, indicate that the mandating of Three Waters was agreed to on June 14, which included a “staged approach to the release of information and policy announcements” and “[consideration] of a legislated ‘all in’ approach to reform”. National’s Local Government spokesperson Simon Watts believed this was enough to establish the process and mandate had been premeditated. Mayor Brown said if it had been decided back in June, then it made the proposals look farcical. “It wouldn’t go down well with anyone,

they were supposedly consulting and giving the option of opting in and opting out,” he said. “If they’ve made that decision way back

it just makes a farce of the whole process.” The Cabinet papers noted that communities achieving the full benefits of reform required “comprehensive participation by

local government, and there were risks to achieving the outcome under a voluntary ‘opt-out’ approach”. He said council staff had to put in “horrendously” long hours during the consultation process. “We lived up to our end of the bargain but if they had an ulterior motive the whole way through then it’s not a good look.” It was confirmed last week that legislation on the reforms would be delayed until the new year to provide more time for the working group to offer feedback. Councillor Wilson, who has been one of the district’s most outspoken critics of the Three Waters proposals, said he was surprised by the contents of the Cabinet documents. “I thought as time went on they might make it compulsory after so many councils came out against it,” he said. “But to hypocritically tell us straight out lies . . . it was straight untruth. “Complete waste of time, I wouldn’t trust them an inch now.” The Ashburton District Council has moved to join other councils around the country to oppose the Government’s planned reforms by proposing an alternative model.

The Ashburton Courthouse now comes under the Covid-19 protection framework. Courts and Tribunals Regional Service Delivery group manager, Jacquelyn Shannon, said the Ashburton District is classified as orange and came under the protection framework on December 6, continuing through to February 1, 2022. She said remote participation allows for video conferencing in some court proceedings where courts can contact directly with prisons and other video conferencing platforms but didn’t say whether remote attendance is an option for use in Ashburton. Shannon said Covid-19 restrictions continue to impact courts.

‘We should be in green’ Adam Burns Numerous calls for the South Island to be flicked down to green have gone unanswered. Yesterday, the Prime Minister Jacinda Adern announced regions currently in red would move to orange on December 30, with the next review to take place mid January. No changes were announced for the South Island. Opposition MPs and some Ashburton businesses have advocated for a lowering of the Traffic Light System from orange to geen, at least for the mainland. There are 33 active community cases of Covid-19 in the South Island, including 10 in the Canterbury region. Ashburton’s Kellys Irish Cafe and Bar believe the South Island should be in green and that the Traffic Light System felt strangely more restrictive than the alert level framework. Co-owner Cathy Trembath said with very few cases in the South Island, restrictions should be loosened. “I would totally understand being in orange and having restrictions if Covid was just coming in and we were riddled,” she said. She said it had been sad to not allow a handful of regulars who were not vaccinated. “I would have liked to have seen it stay the way that it was,” she said. “I understand the Traffic Light System and I respect it, but I’ve lost regulars because of it. “We have a few who would come down for a beer every single night who can’t now.” Without a few of the pub’s loyal clientele, Trembath said they may feel the pinch after the New Year break.

National Party’s Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg slammed the Government on her social media page last week, saying it was nonsensical that the South Island was stuck in orange. It followed revelations that preliminary advice from public health officials that was to have some regions, including the entire South Island, to start in the green setting. “We’ve gone and got vaccinated in record numbers, and vaccination is working,” she said. “When there is absolutely no health advice to support that decision (to be in orange) and given we clearly align with the criteria they set themselves for green. “This is just nuts and needs to be sorted out.” The National Party’s Matt Doocey told the Guardian there was a lack of transparency around the criteria of remaining in orange for the South Island. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been resolute in the view that nowhere in the country would move to green before mid-January. Owners of Ashburton hair salon Minx Hair Spa were hesitant about a move to green for the South Island, although it was dependent on the settings for Auckland. “I reckon we should stay in orange, even though I don’t want to,” owner Leanne Wills said. She said it would be hard if the South Island went to green too soon only to go back again. The salon had lost about 20 clients as a result of the vaccination requirements, Wills said. “It’s a really lousy thing to have to do and I’ve lost a lot of sleep over it. “The girls and I have worked really hard to build up a client base.”

To pass or not to pass . . . Jonathan Leask The Ashburton District Council is set to decide which of its facilities require My Vaccine Pass moving forward under the traffic light system. As it stands in the Ashburton District the EA Networks Centre is requiring vaccine passports, however, no concrete decisions have been made on other council operated sites throughout the district. That may change on Wednesday. While 91 per cent of the Ashburton District has had a second dose of the vaccination the council will consider if introducing the pass requirements will reduce the levels of service and access to members of the community who have elected to

remain unvaccinated. It is understood the council will take a “case by case” approach to deal with each site specifically. Under the “do some” option, the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre, Ashburton Public Library and Mt Hutt Memorial Hall are among the facilities most likely to see a pass requirement introduced. On Monday neighbouring Selwyn District Council announced that as of Friday vaccine passes will be required to enter all of its council staffed facilities. Selwyn council chief executive David Ward said the extension follows the introduction of vaccine pass requirement at several key facilities last week, and aims to provide maximum protection to the Selwyn community and council staff. He said Selwyn’s approach is to maintain access to council services for as many people as possible while keeping people safe, especially during the holi-

day period when some council facilities are likely to see higher numbers of visitors. “Requiring vaccination passes means we can continue to provide our full services to the maximum number of Selwyn residents with the least restrictions,” Ward said. Like Selwyn, most Christchurch City Council facilities, with the exception of transfer stations, require the vaccine pass. To the south, access to all Timaru District Council’s indoor facilities require a vaccination pass, and it is the same in the Mackenzie and Waimate districts. Like Ashburton, the Waimakariri District Council has partial implementation, but is also discussing its options on Wednesday. Not all councils were adopting the vaccine passport requirements as in Hurunui, a pass is only required to access the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools.

Grocery grab boost for successful vendors Jonathan Leask The promotion was for clients who listed with Ray White from October 1 and sell before December 31 to receive a two-minute shopping spree at Ashburton New World. “With the property market being so extremely busy we have a number of grocery grabs happening in the leadup to Christmas and there will be quite a number in January,” Ray White owner Kim Miller said. They held the first three at the weekend with each couple taking home close to $1000 in groceries, Miller said.

“We had three young families who have got their Christmas and New Year goodies all sorted courtesy of successfully selling their properties with Ray White.” There are a further eight this week and more the following week before taking a break over the festive period, and then more in January. “We have a few properties to confirm so there are likely to be a few more added to the list by the end of the month. “It has been an extremely busy three months in real estate. “But it’s been fabulous for us to give something back. “To be able add the cherry on the top at Christmas time in a year that hasn’t actually been great for a lot of people. “It’s been a really successful promotion for us,” Miller said.

Mark your things or lose them Malcolm Hopwood Neighbourhood Support has identified a solution to a spate of burglaries and thefts in Ashburton. It’s progressively distributing safety marking kits to its 165 street co-ordinators so residents in their areas can clearly or invisibly mark their belongings and attach a sticker to the window of their homes. They’re also working with Ashburton Men’s Shed to engrave or mark larger possessions such as cars, boats, caravans, trailers, sporting gear, and tradie’s tools. The initiative follows burglaries of building sites during Christmas and New Year last summer where thieves broke into lock-ups and removed a range of tools. District Neighbourhood Support co-ordinator, Sue Abel, said buildings sites were targeted with a high rate of theft, not just once but on several occasions. “They didn’t just do it once but returned six weeks later when new tools had been purchased and left overnight,” she said. Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins identified the issue and raised it with Neighbourhood Support earlier this year. “We saw the problem and

Zone committee gets to see if the grass really is greener Peering at a patch of grass might not be some people’s idea of fun, but the Ashburton Water Zone Committee members were fascinated by the variety of pasture on offer at a Westerfield dairy farm, as part of a recent field trip. The committee visited Align Clareview’s regenerative farm system, which aims to improve soil health, biodiversity and have less environmental impact. The farm’s head of environment and innovation, Clare Buchanan, is one of the committee’s new members and co-hosted the tour. When it comes to pasture, the cows in the regenerative system get to dine on a range of mixed and diverse species within one paddock, including chicory, plantain, clover, lucerne, and ryecorn. The animals graze the paddock to a much higher residual height than conventional grazing, to protect the soil and its root structure and reduce run-off to waterways. Align Farms chief executive Rhys Roberts said as well as offering the animals a more varied diet and boosting biodiversity, bringing back native bees, birds, and bugs, regenerative agriculture lowers reliance upon conventional synthetic inputs like fertiliser. “We’re proud to have a lower impact on our community and to be putting some more options out there in front of people in the industry,” Roberts said. “It’s all about finding a better balance – maintain a living, but lowering our impact.” Weekly data including supplements fed, milk production, and pasture growth, is uploaded on the farm’s website for all to view.

PHOTO ECAN

We’re happy to share what we’re learning as a working farm transitioning to more regenerative practices and we are definitely still learning in this area. “We’ve had 20 years of conventional farming experience and only about 20 minutes of regenerative farming,” Roberts said. Clareview’s transition to regenerative farming started in the 2019-20 season and, after encouraging results, Align decided to conduct a trial and put 50 per cent of the farm into regenerative pastures for comparison. Ashburton Water Zone Committee chair, William Thomas, said initiatives like those at Clareview Align, highlighted simple measures, like the introduction of diverse pasture species and increasing the grazing round length, that could collectively make a big difference

in the catchment if other farms got on board. “It’s so valuable to see what can be achieved on a commercial farm, rather than within a more traditional scientific setting. “Sharing their data, feedback and practices so openly with the farming community is just the attitude we need to get positive change happening.” The trip to Align was part of a full day outing to explore the challenges and opportunities for better water quality in the Ashburton district. A busy itinerary, which focused on some of the key issues the Ashburton Water Zone will be acting on next year, gave the members more detailed technical information as well as valuable first-hand insights from people in the community.

more vigilant, especially in the lead-up to Christmas,” Abel said. The campaign was accompanied by making available safety marking kits to street co-ordinators. They, in turn, will lend the kits, which comprise an invisible marker, torch, registration form so people can list their belongings and a sticker for the window, to nearby residents. People can also have their belongings engraved. “Currently when homes are burgled and police retrieve possessions, they don’t know who they belong to,” Abel said. “But, if they’re marked with a driver’s licence number or other identifiers, then police can return them to their owners.” More importantly Abel said burglars aren’t going to steal valuable possessions that are marked and can’t be passed on to second-hand dealers. “We have some initial data that shows our campaign has been valuable and we’re studying further analysis about its effect,” Abel said. “We’re a community organisation working with the community to set up prevention opportunities.” Neighbourhood Support is alerting people now with a recommendation that Christmas gifts should be identified so Ashburton can see a reduction in burglaries and become more educated and knowledgeable about theft prevention.

Dog owners urged to be wary of parvovirus Dog owners are being urged to make sure their pets are vaccinated, amid a reported rise in canine parvovirus cases in Christchurch. Ashburton District Council strategy and compliance group manager, Jane Donaldson, said parvovirus was a contagious illness and there were fears it could easily spread to wider Canterbury. “It’s really important our dog owners know about parvovirus and get their puppies and dogs vaccinated before going out and about,” Donaldson said. The vaccine costs about $40 to administer and most puppies are vaccinated against parvovirus at six weeks of age. A booster every three years is recommended. Parvovirus affects a dog’s gastrointestinal tract and initial symptoms include lethargy, lack of appetite, and fever. This usually progresses to vomiting and bloody diarrhoea and can be fatal. The SPCA in Christchurch has warned dog owners about a recent rise in parvovirus cases, prompting the warning to Ashburton District dog owners to be wary and take preventative measures. Donaldson said while the disease was highly contagious, it was preventable. “Vaccination is the key to preventing this disease and protecting dogs,” she said.

Keep irrigation water off roads Mid Canterbury farmers are being asked to take care where their irrigation water goes – and keep it off the roads this summer. Summer is now here and that means irrigation is getting under way across the region. Water is a precious resource and Environment Canterbury’s southern zone delivery lead Janine Holland said farmers should irrigate efficiently and keep the water off the road. “It’s vital irrigation systems only water within people’s property boundaries and not on the roads where it causes a hazard,” Holland said. “The most common reasons for water going over-boundary are the extra spray from end guns on pivot irrigators, and travelling irrigators getting too close to roads.” On hot, windy days, irrigation water drifts on to roads, where it can contribute to road deterioration and make the hot tar slippery. “These problems can be easily solved by checking that end guns are set and operating correctly and setting back travelling irrigators an adequate distance from the road,” Holland said. Anyone who notices irrigation spray on the road should contact ECan. If there is an immediate danger to road users, they should contact the police. Careful placement of irrigators is also needed during northwesterly wind conditions, to ensure irrigators aren’t knocked over. Water is a precious resource in the Ashburton, Orari Temuka Opihi Pareora, and Waitaki areas – particularly in dry periods like summer. It was important anyone carrying out irrigation ensures they keep up-to-date with the latest restrictions, Holland said. “These cover specific areas, which may relate to the consent you hold. Restrictions are put in

There’s plenty to celebrate David Clark

B

y all measures it has been one heck of a year for many of our community, particularly our farmers who were hit by the full force of the floods in May, statistically a once-in-a-lifetime scale event. Added to that we have all had the disruption of Covid-19 and its associated restrictions, a lack of staff across all sectors, the escalating costs of inputs and some folk still have mycoplasma bovis turning up in their herds. What we often don’t hear about is the positives of this district and the positives of the diverse agricultural sector in Mid Canterbury. We are now home to some of the highest performing dairy farms in the country; this district is the centre of the New Zealand arable industry with its production world-renown for seed quality and purity; our lamb finishing systems dovetailing into the arable rotation to provide integrated income streams, markets for store lambs and out-of-season production; and our foothills and high country sheep and beef farms producing much sought after store stock and fine wool. Along with this goes all of the service industries that have a symbiotic relationship with our farmers, inter-dependent on each other, resulting in prosperous businesses and near full employment across the county. I came to Mid Canterbury in 1994 and on reflection, this was an area still dusting itself off from the droughts and economic downturn of the 1980s. This was a district that our young people aspired to leave, now it is a place they yearn to stay or return to. There is no doubt that in some ways there has been over-reach, which is generally acknowledged. Key milestones in that jour-

Mid Canterbury is home to some of the highest performing dairy farms in the country. ney would be the Clean Streams Accord requiring the fencing of waterways in the dairy industry and the implementation of the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan (CLWRP) by the government appointed commissioners at Environment Canterbury.

It is much more politically expedient to shout that we are going to hell in a handcart. That’s not quite true. The same goes for Climate Change. The Paris Accord in Article Two specifically states – “Increasing the ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate

county is home to some of the “ This world’s best farmers and we are fortunate to live in a prosperous, diverse district

The CLWRP puts in place a set of targets for groundwater nitrate that will be difficult to achieve, but with changes to farm management systems, will be able to be met. You seldom hear commentators point out that the CLWRP sets a maximum nitrate level for all of Canterbury’s groundwater that is lower than the average nitrate level of the reticulated drinking water for the City of London.

change and foster climate resilience and low greenhouse gas emissions development, in a manner that does not threaten food production”. So why is that relevant for us? New Zealand farmers with their pastoral grazing production systems are world leaders in food production on the basis of GHG emissions per unit of food production. Any reduction in stock numbers or food production in New

Zealand will reduce the NZ emissions profile, but result in that food being produced elsewhere, arguably by less efficient producers thus resulting in a net increase in GHG per unit of food produced. Does that mean to say we shouldn’t strive to be even more efficient. Absolutely not, we are already on a path of constant improvement, which will only accelerate as technologies become available. The agricultural sector is the only sector of the New Zealand economy or society that is actually reducing GHG emissions, so if we are genuinely concerned about Climate Change, then we all have some changing to do. The point of this article is not to argue we don’t have things to improve on, nor is it to suggest the rate of change should be slowed. I am confident that farmers in this district are up for the challenge, and they only ask that the changes be fair, reasonable and correctly targeted. Unachievable targets seldom achieve anything.

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

In the last few years, what has been lost in the noise of political rhetoric is to stand back and reflect that this county is home to some of the world’s best farmers and we are fortunate to live in a prosperous, diverse district that offers social, recreational and employment opportunities to all. After the year we have had, and the damage caused to so many by the floods, I would like to acknowledge the gut-busting efforts of those affected, our council and social agencies, and the sports groups, clubs, friends, neighbours, family, and hundreds of volunteers who out-stretched a hand to lift our people up out of the mud. Thank you. In closing, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Be safe and have a wonderful time relaxing with your own special people. Exemptions welcomed, but migrant process complex Exemptions to allow more dairy farm assistants and heavy machinery operators into New Zealand have been welcomed, but agricultural sectors still face a complex and lengthy process to get overseas workers across the border. The Government has approved border class exceptions for key agricultural jobs including 200 mobile plant machinery operators, 40 shearers and 50 wool handlers. Changes have also been made to the dairy worker border exception, allowing more dairy farm assistants to meet the high demand for entry level staff. “We’ve approved these exceptions to support key autumn harvest requirements and relieve workforce pressures created by Covid-19,” Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor said. “We’ve also altered the existing class border exception for 200 dairy workers to remove the previous split of 150 assistant dairy farm managers and 50 dairy farm assistants. “There’s huge demand for dairy farm assistants, so we’re providing more flexibility for our dairy sector to fill jobs up to the maximum of 200 where they see the strongest need.” Dairy NZ said more workers are needed and it is continuing to push for another 1500 dairy international workers to be let into

Federated Farmers immigration spokesperson Chris Lewis said the border exceptions would allow approved workers to assist with the shearing and arable sectors over their peak busy period. the country for the 2022 dairy season. The workers will help alleviate crippling staff shortages that are having a serious impact on farmer wellbeing. Despite the border exemption, only three out of a potential 200 dairy workers had arrived in New Zealand by the start of November. Rural contractors last month said that the shortage of skilled agricultural machinery operators

was reaching a crisis point, with many unable to meet farmer requirements and increasing fears for their health and safety. O’Connor said the latest exceptions followed previous work to help the sector meet workforce needs. “Shearing is a skilled trade and while the sector is working hard to attract and train new people this will help get our quality wool to overseas markets.

“Mobile plant machinery operators use large high-tech vehicles and are vital for the arable and horticulture sectors to get harvests in. “I know there are still labour challenges across the sector and we will continue working with the sector to meet them where possible. “Taking into account our most recent decisions, the primary sector has received more than 5100 class exceptions since June 2020 – making it close to healthcare for the most industry exceptions. “Added to this we started oneway for quarantine-free travel for RSE workers in October. Combine that with the one-off pathway to residence now available to some 9000 migrants working in rural New Zealand and we’re making progress. “We’re continuing discussions with the meat sector on how to address their labour needs, particularly regarding halal slaughterers.” Federated Farmers immigration spokesperson Chris Lewis said the border exceptions would allow approved workers to assist with the shearing and arable sectors over their peak busy period. “For seasonal work such as shearing and the arable harvest it is essential that we bolster our local workforce with talent from overseas.”

“We are also pleased to see the settings are being changed for the dairy border exception. Farmers across the country are asking for boots on the ground to help milk and feed livestock and the dairy assistant is the right role for doing this.” The government’s exemption changes follow many meetings and many months of advocacy by Federated Farmers, DairyNZ, the Shearers Contractors Association, Rural Contractors NZ and Dairy Women’s Network to try and get an improved class exception process and staff on farm. “Last week we met twice with ministers to give this another push and get messages across,” Lewis said. While the border exceptions have been approved, employers and their workers are still faced with a complex and lengthy process to get employees into New Zealand and working on farms. “The border exception is just the first part of this process,” Lewis said. “Employers and their workers will need to work closely with their respective industry groups to sort MIQ, flights and all the associated paperwork. “This is not an easy or cheap task for either party, but with unemployment at such low levels this is really the only option for much of the primary industries at the moment.”

Fonterra should be able to ‘capitalise on opportunities’ RNZ Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor says some small tweaks still need to be made to Fonterra’s capital restructure but he will support the legislative change needed for it to go ahead. Shareholders overwhelming voted for a new capital structure for the dairy co-op last week. But for the changes to be made, the government needs to amend the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act.

O’Connor previously raised concerns over the proposal. But O’Connor has now said he was confident the government could work with Fonterra to get the change across the line. “It’s a very clear result and I’m pleased for Fonterra. It was really important that they get a clear mandate for change and there’s an indication that the farmers are behind the board. “There’s been a shift in focus for both the board and management over the last couple of years. This is an endorsement of

the direction of travel.” But there were still some issues that needed to be discussed, he said. “There were concerns around the possible consolidation of votes or the influence in the hands of some. It’s important [that] it’s easier for new farmers to get involved and this does that to some extent but we have to ensure that the companies working in their long term interests and future generations as well. “Making sure the milk price

settings are right to ensure there’s no gaming – that’s been one of the criticisms made by independent companies.” There were always issues around competition policy and law in New Zealand, making sure that a dominant player in any industry was not able to utilise excessive market power and those things needed to be worked through, O’Connor said. “In my perspective, I need to know that the people who are minority shareholders, they may only own a third of the shares

that they’re entitled to are being looked after and that those who own four times the shares that they might be entitled to that they aren’t dominating the proceedings at the board table.” He said there would not be drastic changes but it was important that if legislation were to be passed, it was done right. “We’ve committed to work with the board, this is our biggest and best company. We’ve got to make sure that it’s in the best position to capitalise on the opportunities into the future.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Inventory time. To know what you long for is a blessing that doesn’t feel like one. Better to have a specific want than the maddeningly vague sense that something’s off. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Are you tempted to blurt out what’s on your mind or flash a reckless reveal of heart? It’s truth you’re spilling, but beware: The truth evokes unpredictable responses – laughter, tears or anger. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): To take responsibility for your life is to realise that even though so much is out of your control, it is also true that you are here because of the choices you’ve made. You’ll celebrate and ponder the matter today. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Your personal rituals can be as expected or unexpected, regimented or elaborate, as you like. There’s a spot in your day that is devoid of vibrance, waiting for an infusion of your personality. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Good news: There’s a mutual attraction between you and the subject that fascinates you. You need more of the subject, and the subject needs more of you. Consider taking a class. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You don’t need to find a workaround for obtaining what you want. All you have to do is request it. Every time you ask for what you want, it gets a bit easier. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): What you do is not the same as who you are, and you’re wise not to confuse the two. Offer yourself some softness for the mistakes, and, for balance, temper your response to victories, too. Your efforts are well-intended. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It’s a strong day for your powers of visualisation, and you’ll see very clearly where you’re headed. The image of who you want to be is as clear to you as the person staring back from the mirror. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You want some sparkle and awe, and there are two ways to go about it: Follow your curiosity deeper and deeper until it leads you to wonderland, or create the marvel you wish to see. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Everything in this world was built by people who had ideas or fleshed out ideas that were in motion. You’re thinking about what you’ll contribute. Don’t hold back. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): While some consider being wrong a fate worse than a lightning strike to the skull, you don’t mind it at all. In fact, you don’t even take yourself seriously enough for wrongness to look bad on you. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Ultimately, the answer is to take action while thinking positive. You’ll skip the part where you discuss the issue with people who categorically can’t do anything about the situation at hand.

Tourism cash and Covid-19 H

ands up if you’re slightly anxious about what awaits from tomorrow? That’s when thousands of holiday-hungry Aucklanders will bring much needed dollars – and, sadly, Covid-19 – south for the holidays. From Wednesday, the fully vaccinated or those with proof of a recent negative Covid test, will be allowed to leave Auckland. You remember that place, our biggest city that’s been in lockdown since August. Well, not anymore, with the possibility that up to 4000 people a day could fly into Christchurch from Auckland in the 10 days leading up to Christmas. And Queenstown could have up to 10 flight arrivals daily from Auckland, peaking at 15 on Christmas Eve. Potentially, that’s a lot of travellers and that doesn’t include those heading our way on Cook Strait

Daryl Holden ferries. We all understand that the influx of Aucklanders, and their cash, will be vital to tourism hot spots in the South Island, which would include Methven’s flash new Opuke thermal pools and day spa. Aucklanders make up about 70 per cent of Queenstown’s domestic tourists for a start. We also know that the resort town, and nearby Wanaka, has literally been on its knees waiting for the arrival of the city of sails’ brigade. But – and it is a worrying and important but at that – we in the South Island should also be a tad

apprehensive about those travellers spreading the virus. Hold on. Wind back the tape. We should be a heck of a lot more than just a tad concerned.

figure, so it could be much, much worse. The Southern DHB will hope its numbers are not out of whack because, for one thing, it has only 20

all understand that the influx of “ We Aucklanders, and their cash, will be vital to tourism, but we should also be a tad apprehensive about those travellers spreading the virus.

Clearly, the Southern District Health Board is worried. Chief executive Chris Fleming has already been reported as saying that the arrival of Covid-19 in the region was inevitable. He’s said it’s possible they may have to deal with about 20 people a day in hospital. That’s a conservative planning

intensive care unit beds between Invercargill and Dunedin, and just 52 ventilators across the whole region. So that’s why it has locked in extra spaces – like motels and hotels – for Covid cases needing to self-isolate. They’re also setting up extra pandemic testing facilities in

Queenstown and Wanaka. So good on the Southern DHB for being proactive. It has to be, but make no mistake about the fact that we are entering dangerous times. No-one can convince me otherwise. Covid-19 cases would also add further stress and pressure to what is normally heavy summer workloads for doctors. Yes, millions of tourism dollars coming into popular South Island holiday spots would be such a relief for those under-pressure, near collapsed businesses. No question. But is it worth the risk of events and some of those areas suddenly becoming pandemic super spreaders? Is it worth the risk to our health? Is it worth the risk of having one death, five, or more? We all know the answer to that. Don’t we.

TAKING ISSUE 21

Things have certainly changed M

addison Hooper turns five years old tomorrow and in the weekend we had not one, but two parties for her. The first one was a family gathering on Saturday which morphed into a beer club. Beer club happens most Saturdays at either our place or at this time of the year, Rangitata Camping Ground. We try and sample some new craft beers each week. We started quite early with a barbecue lunch and had planned on an early night, so we were nice and fresh for the dozen or so little people firing around the place the next day. Best laid plans and all that, some of us got our second wind and we didn’t wind up until 11pm. I must confess, when Manda said we should get a bouncy castle for Maddy’s birthday a few weeks ago, I thought, jeez didn’t need bouncy castles back in my day. But when I woke up a bit dusty on Sunday morning, I muttered to myself, “Thank god for the bouncy castle”. Eighty-seven per cent of the kids’ time at the party was spent bouncing. Add in a game of pass the parcel, pin the nose on Olaf, afternoon tea and the Happy Birthday- blow out the candles and it was job done. Too easy! Pass the parcel went off without a hitch, thank God. I was a tad nervous beforehand and could picture two kids in a tug of war battle with the present. Or worse still an all-in maul with biting and eye gouging, akin to a good old fashioned test match against the French. The overall winner did a great job of retaining a hold of the present as the music stopped. Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR A less skilled player could well have let it go a second too early and knocked it on into the opposition’s lap. My favourite part of the day, apart from scoffing into the beautiful cake that my very clever wife created, was watching Maddy as we all sung happy birthday to her. She cast her eye around the room to make sure everyone was participating with a big satisfied grin on her face which said “Yeah that’s right, sing it up people, Princess Maddy is enjoying your efforts”. My least favourite part of the day was when the bouncy castle bloke said: “Kids only on this castle”. And gave me a look as if to say “Don’t even think about it fat boy”. Bugger! On a different note. My facebook feed has been loaded with posts about vaccine passports of late and then I hear reports of local businesses being on the receiving end of abuse for following the rules. We are on a bit of a knife-edge at the moment and all need to tread carefully, so here’s my thoughts on it. Whatever side of the vaccine fence you sit, you do you and don’t jam that down other people’s throats. Till next week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper Pass the parcel referee. The Covid Chat Red Card System – the cure to the Covid conversation By Matt Heath - NZME Coviding Verb 1. Engaging in long, tedious discussions about the Covid-19 virus.

N

ew Zealand was once the home of great chat. Nowadays, we just prattle on about Covid. The Covid Chat Red Card System offers Kiwis hope. It’s the key tool we have to protect people from the spread of boring Covid-19 conversations. Two years ago, the people of our great nation talked about cool stuff like weather, sport and what we were watching on Netflix. After a few drinks, things naturally turned towards sex, more weather and telling strangers at urinals “I really love you man, you’re my best mate”. Excellent topics, good times. Then out of the blue the bug hit

and entertaining conversations died. All discussions were instantly infected with the virus. The Covid Chat Red Card System (CCRCS) will slow that spread. What we put into our brains shapes what comes out. We talk a lot about Covid because we hear nothing else. New Zealand media is riddled with the virus. That’s the way it should be. They have key info to share, questions to ask and products to sell. When we’re not absorbing Covid from the news, it remains in the forefront of our minds thanks to QR codes, vaccine passports and border restrictions. Then there’s social media transmission. Unsurprisingly, online is a cesspit of Covid bollocks. There are people all over the country scoring own goals by Coviding away on Facebook,

Instagram, Reddit and Twitter. It’s a simple equation. If you feed on virus chat 24/7, it’s bound to come out both ends at Christmas dinner. The Red Card System is a Covid chat protection framework. A pathway to eliminating virus talk. The Red Card System empowers Kiwis to bring a yellow and a red card to all social occasions. If someone mentions Covid, show them the yellow. That’s a warning. If they do it again, it’s a red, and the guilty party must leave the room, yard, or beach for 10 minutes. It’s a clear message to Kiwis: bring up Covid and you’re outta here!. If we all do our part, we can return to a normal way of talking. The yellow card acknowledges that no-one is perfect. One slipup is understandable. Someone

might ask “what you have been up to?”. The knee-jerk answer for Aucklanders is “nothing, my whole city was locked down for four months”. That’s a yellow. You have accidentally mentioned a Covid-adjacent word: “lockdowns”. The yellow gives you a chance to learn, assess and adjust. If you mention Covid again, you are gone — 10 minutes on the bench, no sympathy. Egregious offending will earn a red card immediately. If, for example, you arrive at a barbecue and ask “how was your lockdown?”. You will be shown the red straight away. That is a cynical infraction. The following terms will earn you a card at all social occasions: Delta, Omicron, vax, anti-vax, team of five million, Bloomfield, Wiles, Baker, Hendy, modelling, the border, MIQ, alert level, breach, Hipkins, traffic light, Bri-

an, announcement, announcement of an announcement, Hannah and Tamaki. Use any of these words, and you are out. Covid restrictions have taken a lot from New Zealand. Let’s not lose our summer to Covid chat. It’s time Kiwis re-learnt the art of wide and varied conversation. Together we can enjoy each other’s company free from Coviding. It’s two cards for summer fam, two cards for long days and warm nights. Two cards is the key, two cards to gather whanau, two cards to share a feed. Two cards to have a sing-a-long, even two cards to do the deed. Stand up Aotearoa and find something more interesting to talk about than Covid. • I have red-carded myself for writing this article. Purdon masterstroke leads to Methven success Matt Markham Two important decisions, made more than an hour apart at Methven on Sunday, underlined just why Mark Purdon is regarded as one of the best in the business. And the first came when very few were watching. Purdon, who trains in partnership with Hayden Cullen at Rolleston, took his star trotter Oscar Bonavena – a short-priced favourite for the Trotters Green Mile – out onto the track a few races earlier to give him a quiet bowl around the track to get a feel for the surface, and to see whether or not the stallion would be able to handle the conditions. The second decision came halfway through the two minutes and six seconds it took to conduct the actual race, when he elected to stay on the fence and chance his arm at a bit of luck in the home straight. And both proved to be masterstrokes. Armed with the knowledge from his quiet bowl around a little earlier on in the day, Purdon summed up the race perfectly, knowing full well that working

hard and getting a little wider on the track would leave him susceptible late in the race, so he stayed boxed in and waited for the gap to come at the top of the straight. And when it did, Oscar Bonavena did the rest. “Once he saw daylight, he always felt like he was going to win,” Purdon said. “I could have come out down the back straight, but I didn’t want to be too wide on that last bend, so I took a chance and waited to have one go at them, and luckily it worked out perfectly. “He’s just a great horse with a wonderful temperament.” While Oscar was dominant, Purdon couldn’t quite make it double delight on Sunday by winning the Pacer Green Mile however with another favourite in It’s All About Faith. The Stonewall Stud-prepared Alta Wiseguy made the race his own in the hands of Tim Williams, sitting parked and dashing away from his rivals at the top of the straight to win from fast-finishing local, Cranbourne. After a wet weekend there were some fears on how the Mt Harding track would hold up on Sunday, but feedback from raceday drivers to the Methven club was really positive, and with close to $1.5 million set to have been in-

Brosnan turns back the clock 42 years with Maori Law BY MICHAEL GUERIN NZ HERALD

Looking back now over the 42-year-old gap between his Inter Dominion victories, Kiwi trainer Richard Brosnan realises how little he knew. Brosnan and his son Emmett trained Maori Law to win the $150,000 Trotting Final at Menangle on Saturday, beating fellow New Zealand horseman Anthony Butt driving Oamaru trotter Majestic Man. The win came 42 years after Brosnan trained and drove No Response to win the 1979 Inter Dominion Trotting Final at Addington, one of the most amazing come-from-last wins in New Zealand harness racing history. Back then, Brosnan was 30, and the prince of a golden era in New Zealand racing. Soon after he had champion pacer Bonnie’s Chance, who won a New Zealand Cup by seven lengths among a stable of stars. It was all so easy. Too easy to be true. A move north from his South Canterbury base to Auckland, a change of racing patterns, the rise of the all-conquering forces of trainers such as Mark Purdon and the reality of not having huge

Races this week

The Ashburton Racing Club will host their final meeting for 2021 this Thursday at the Ashburton Racecourse. With a busy period of racing ahead heading into the Christmas and New Year period, big numbers are expected for the mid-week meeting, where eight races have been initially programmed, with the prospect of a few more added if numbers are big enough.

Longshots galore The father-and-daughter driving combination of Gerard and Sarah O’Reilly rocked the punters at Addington on Friday when landing big-priced winners on the programme. Gerard started the ball rolling when he won with Reggie Golightly, who stormed up the inside to win at $73-to-one, and then Sarah delivered for former Mid Canterbury trainer, Colin Harrison in the last when Oliver North boomed home to win paying $32. Maori Law and Greg Sugar lead the Inter Dominion Trotters Grand Final with a lap to run on Saturday night. PHOTO SUPPLIED sums to play with at the yearling sales meant much of Brosnan’s next 30 years was spent working hard without getting close to the lofty peaks of the early 1980s again. “I was so young then, you think these things come easy, you almost take them for granted,” he said. “But I look back now and realise I was lucky to have a patch like that.

“A lot of better trainers than me train their whole lives and never have an open class horse, and I had five at the same time. “Which is one reason winning this final means so much, because now I know how rare these moments are. “The other reason is I get to do this with Emmett. “To train an Inter Dominion winner in partnership with your son is a dream.”

Brosnan moved to Australia five years ago to spend more time with his adult children, three of whom live there, but these days, training horses is more a hobby than a business. Then along came former age group star Maori Law, and the Brosnans worked together on his soundness issues and that, combined with a happy horse and a perfect run in the 3009m race, closed that gap of 42 years to provide another special chapter in Inter Dominion racing history.

Williams bags four Leading South Island jockey Kylie Williams moved to within 10 wins of 800 riding successes on Saturday when she bagged a quartet of wins at Invercargill. Williams was in sublime form winning with Humbucker, Demand Respect, Nomen Ludi and Robina Joy on the programme and looks odds on to reach the 800 mark over the coming six weeks with a busy racing schedule ahead of her.

2021 ends on a loss for Country Mid Canterbury Matt Markham Country Mid Canterbury will be pleased to see the back end of the first half of the 2021/2022 Tennis Canterbury Premier season, after they crashed to another defeat on the weekend in Christchurch. After losing four on the trot, the side trekked north on Saturday with high hopes of getting things back on track in their match with the similarly placed Bishopdale Te Kura Hagley Park side, but again left it off the court as they were humbled five matches to one in the encounter. Cameron McCracken again provided the only resistance for the side – winning his singles match 6-2, 6-3 – Country Mid Canterbury’s only win for the afternoon. Again, it was a case of what might have been, with three of the defeats going to a tie-break, only to fall on the wrong side for the Mid Canterbury team. Jack Tiller pushed hard to find some form again in his singles match, dropping the first set before bouncing back to win the second before losing the tiebreak 5-10. Nathan McKenzie also went to a third after winning the first 6-0

Sports cancelled

Most sport in the Mid Canterbury region was cancelled on Saturday as the rotten run of luck with the weather continued to impede on season progressions. Softball, tennis and cricket at all age groups and levels were cancelled due to the rain on the weekend, including the two senior club cricket matches in Timaru on Saturday afternoon. With most sports set to break for the year before returning early in 2022, the hope will be for brighter days once January rolls around.

Nationals coming The Waireka Croquet Club will host the best and biggest names in croquet in the country early next year. The NZ Golf Croquet Nationals will be held at the Ashburton Club beginning on January 16 and running through until January 23. The event sees the best players in the country competing in both doubles and singles across the seven-day event.

Finals re-introduced

before dropping the second 2-6. He lost his tie-break 7-10. In the doubles, Tiller and Ben Smith lost in straight sets while McCracken and McKenzie fought out a titanic battle. They won the first 6-2 before losing the second 0-6.

The tie-break was an all-consuming affair, but they came out on the wrong side of it losing 1113. With just one victory registered from their six matches thus far, it’s been a tough start to the campaign for last season’s

beaten finalists, and they’ll need to really turn things around in 2022. The side now get close to two months to dwell on it all before returning to the court on February 12, where they will take on Cashmere.

Semi-finals and finals will return to the Heartland Championship in 2022. After Covid saw a truncated season undertaken this year, normal service resumes next year. The shadow draw for the competition has been released, with Mid Canterbury gaining home games against South Canterbury, East Coast, West Coast and King Country, with away trips against Whanganui, North Otago, Horowhenua Kapiti and Buller. A start date for the competition is yet to be released by NZRU.

Rain sees Hawke Cup opener end in a draw Matt Markham The weekend’s wet weather across the South Island resulted in a drawn match for Mid Canterbury in their first Hawke Cup game of the season against South Canterbury in Timaru. Just 25 overs of play were conducted in the two-day match which began on Saturday, with the remainder of the weekend spent looking towards the sky for some clear air – which never came. Play got under way shortly after lunch on Saturday, with Mid Canterbury winning the toss and electing to bat first. They started strongly with Nick Gilbert and Angus Jemmett at the top of the order scoring 42 for the opening partnership. Gilbert fell for 25 first, and Jemmett followed 10 overs later for 34 – with just one over left to go in the day’s play. That left Devon Flannery and Des

Kruger in the middle at the end of a truncated Saturday’s play and Mid Canterbury at 78/2, with hopes of a good morning on Sunday to put a decent tally on the board. It never came though. Multiple pitch inspections were conducted over the morning, before the decision was made to call the match a draw and see points split between the two sides. Adding a little more insult to the frustration of not getting a game in was that Otago Country pinched a march on the standings by claiming first innings points in their match against North Otago, played in Alexandra. However, the result could have been a lot worse, with North Otago rolled for 118 in their first innings. They then took down the Otago Country line-up for 253 and batted out the remainder of the match to seal a draw, finishing at 306/5 when stumps were drawn. Mid Canterbury will have to wait until the middle of January now to get back out into the middle, when they travel south to play Southland in the second round of the competition on January 15 and 16.

Gail’s a volunteer of the highest order Matt Markham

The sport of netball might be so much about what happens on the court each week, but it’s what happens off the court that makes the sport tick over locally. And those who work tirelessly behind the scenes and ensure that the sport runs smoothly were recognised earlier this month at the Mid Canterbury Netball AGM, where a number of special awards were handed out to clubs and individuals for their efforts. At the meeting, tireless worker Gail Benseman was acknowledged for the hours of work she puts in to organising

Benseman was awarded the Sport Mid Canterbury Trophy for a volunteer. “Gail is just such an awesome and valued member of our Mid Canterbury Netball family, nothing is ever a bother for her,” Mid Canterbury Netball centre manager Erin Tasker said. Charged with ensuring that each week there are bench officials for matches, Benseman

was given extra responsibility this year with the addition of a new premier three grade – meaning more games and more officials to be found. “Gail has managed to recruit a really good team of bench officials over the years, and most weeks she manages to fill the spots on the benches.” As well as receiving her award, Benseman was also on hand to present one at the AGM as well. She handed out a new trophy, the Gail Benseman Tro-

phy, which is awarded to a bench official from during the season. This year was the second year it had been presented, and the 2020 recipient was Leonie Donald, who had come along each week and quietly helped out where needed, and even stepped further up the ranks by benching at games in Christchurch. The Elsie Adlam Memorial Trophy was also awarded at the AGM, to Nerida Jemmett for administrative excellence.

Valiant effort from the Aorangi ladies Matt Markham It was a week of narrow defeats and what might have been for the Aorangi side at the NZ Golf Women’s Interprovincial in Timaru last week. The experienced side endured a tough start to the week where they lost three consecutive matches 3-2 to open their campaign, before bouncing back in the second half of the tournament to post some good results. Losses to Bay Of Plenty, Canterbury and Waikato by the barest of margins unfolded in the opening two days of the week, before points were put on the board with a halved match against Hawkes Bay and Poverty Bay combined. That match featured a clutch effort from Catherine Knight, who had to land a 15-foot putt to halve her match and stop their rivals from taking the outright win. A tough loss to Taranaki on Friday morning put them out of contention for a semi-final spot, but the week did end on a high though, with victory on the final day of pool play where they beat Northland 3-2. Northland needed to win the overall match to push into the top four and shunt out Canterbury, but the Aorangi ladies stood tall and delivered in style with their most polished performance of the week. Wellington emerged victorious in the event, beating Canterbury in the final 3.5 to 1.5. They booked their spot by beating Manawatu and Wanganui in the morning, while Canterbury saw off Bay Of Plenty via a playoff hole after the sides couldn’t be split at the end of play. The tournament closed off a huge two weeks for the Aorangi region, with both the men’s and women’s events held here with great success.

Locals aiming for national glory Matt Markham There will be a strong Mid Canterbury presence in Christchurch early in the New Year, when the Bowls New Zealand nationals come to Canterbury. The annual event, which draws the attention of lawn bowlers from around the country, sees seven days of play in both singles and pairs, and the 2022 edition is to be hosted by Bowls Canterbury, with the world class Burnside Bowling Club main base for the week’s event. Entries for the event closed earlier this month, and the draws were released late last week for both men’s and women’s action, with plenty of local names featuring among the sections for the qualifying stages of the two events. Three-time national champion, Sandra Keith spearheads the local contingent. She’s the only Mid Canterbury player in

the women’s singles, as she looks to repeat her effort from the 2011-2012 season where she was victorious in the coveted event. She’ll also be in action in the pairs, combining with Canterbury’s Bev Morel to form a strong combination. Allenton’s Raylene Heads will also compete in the pairs as part of a composite team. In the men’s action eight players from our shores will do battle in the singles. Outstanding singles player Brentton Donaldson leads the local line-up, alongside noted players Craig Carter, Jeff Nowell, Rob Fensom and Richard Kane. In the pairs, which is held later in the week’s play, 10 pairings featuring local players will compete, including some who have joined forces with players from outside of Mid Canterbury. Carter and Fensom will prove a strong combination while Rodney Greaney will also be in action. Players will play in six matches through the section stage with qualifiers advancing to the knockout stages of the competition after those rounds have been completed.
