Murneys local love

‘Ashburton is such an exciting town’ Malcolm Hopwood The success of the Ashburton Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local campaign is through the people. That’s the view of Murney family trust chief executive Willie Murney, who said everyone goes above and beyond with the friendliness and service they provide in Ashburton. And the campaign had captured that. “It’s been a great campaign and shows Ashburton has some of the best shops providing the best service anywhere in New Zealand,” he said. And that includes, of course, the spectacular low-rise Murney Main-dubbed building on the corner of East and Burnett streets and which houses the Fine Lion restaurant and NBS. It is clearly the building jewel of Ashburton, sitting proudly as a beacon for the central business area, with stunning artwork and copper facade. When the trust built Murney Main, which celebrated its first anniversary this month, Murney said it had deliberately gone “local and engaged the best crafts and tradespeople that Ashburton could provide” to construct something special, which included the striking illuminated bird murals. “They had pride in their work and, together with us, have taken ownership of the building,’’ Murney said. “We used as much local labour as we could.” As Willie, his sister Jayne and mother Kate were talking to the Guardian, a photographer was taking shots of the exterior of Murney Main, which had been nominated for an architectural design award. “We called it Murney Main because it’s our main business and it’s on the main street of Ashburton,” he said. The family moved to Ashburton in 1975 to establish the successful RX Plas-

These days the family’s focus was on their property portfolio. They own a number of properties in Ashburton and others in both the North and South islands. lion at auction to keep it in local hands. “We’re still considering options for Tuarangi and intend to announce our decision in the new year,” Murney said. The family also regards supporting local charities as important. Their priority is health and a range of local causes. “Ashburton is such an exciting town,

there’s always something happening here that we can feed off.’’ But for Kate Murney, it’s the people that count. “Our family grew up here and the community has supported us,’’ she said. “When I return and park in the main street, it’s home.”

Guaranteed sweet, shiny finish from Espire groomers Lili Haydon Would that be milk with your coffee, sir? Okay, so that’s clearly not the usual sort of question you’d expect to get at a car wash and grooming business, but then Espire Detailing in Ashburton is far from normal. Because owner Eddie Dhanoa is all about going that extra kilometre or two for his customers, which is why every client gets the opportunity to enjoy a free coffee while they wait for their vehicle to be washed or groomed. Regardless of what service they booked in for, or how much they spent, each customer would receive a complimentary coffee voucher from Taste Café to redeem while they waited. It’s all about working with locals than against them, according to Dhanoa, who opened his car grooming business in Victoria Street in May. “I have been in the car business for 10 years and I wanted to move on and do something on my own,” Dhanoa said. A stint in Auckland was followed by a move to Christchurch for eight years and now Ashburton for the Punjab native from India. “I grew up on a farm, where we cultivated wheat and rice and did dairy farming,” he said, explaining that Ashburton, and its rural setting, reminded him a lot like home back in India. “I wanted to go back to my old (rural upbringing) roots.”

Fast facts Business: Espire Detailing car groomers Address: 85 Victoria Street, Ashburton Phone: 03 423 2139 Owner: Eddie Dhanoa. “Locals rely on locals as they spend within the community.’’ And those Ashburton roots suit him just fine. He has five staff in his car grooming business, but that does not include labradors, Charlie and Oscar. “(But) they come to work every day.” Though they say the first year in business is the hardest, and that’s without the once in a generation impact of a pandemic to contend with, Dhanoa said he had been lucky to have had the support of the community to keep him going. Espire Detailing was naturally a big supporter of the Guardian’s Shop Smart Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is Campaign, which is aimed to support and promote businesses and enterprises in the district. “Locals rely on locals as they spend within the community,” Dhanoa said. And this Christmas, Dhanoa is offering gift vouchers for those locals planning on road tripping in the summer and wanting to drive away in a sparkling clean, fresh smelling vehicle. All organised while enjoying a caffeine hit while they wait.

ACADS suggests that vaping is not fit for purpose Adam Burns

The move to ban the sale of tobacco to younger people has been welcomed by Ashburton health advocates, but they suggest more work needs to be done. Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall last week announced Auahi Kore Aotearoa Mahere Rautaki 2025, a response to the Government’s bid for the country to be smokefree by 2025. The plan includes measures that by the end of 2022, under 14-year-olds will not be able to legally purchase tobacco – and the age will rise each year so that younger generations will never have legal access to tobacco. The measures have been described as a world first. Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (ACADS) health promoter Andrae Gold said cutting off access to the younger generation was significant. “To have gone to the extent that they have and refusing access to a product . . . I just think it’s amazing,” she said. But she added that more work needed to be done on broader drug-related issues. “I would have liked to have seen decriminalisation of illicit drugs so that’s something we’re continuing to work on. “Certainly during Covid, that’s really shown, the stress and pressure of people who are vulnerable and marginalised in our community, there’s a lot of work to be done.” She said tobacco was one of the toughest drugs to give up. “We work with addiction right across

the board,” she said. “While we prefer people to use other quit smoking services, often it features in the work that we do with our people. “It can actually be one of the harder ones to let go of.” Off the back of Minister Verrall’s announcement, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described vaping as a successful alternative to help people stop smoking. However ACADS were not convinced, from their observations locally, that vap-

ing had been utilised for its intended use. “It’s been a shame that a tool such as vaping, that has been made available to assist people to stop people smoking cigarettes and then switch over to the vaping and gradually work on cutting out the nicotine, has become perhaps more of a trend within young people,” Gold said. She said broader education from a young age on both tobacco and alcohol still needed more work. “I can remember at 13, reading an arti-

cle on the effects of cannabis on the brain so that was really helpful for me. “I just wish it had strong messages around alcohol and tobacco – I would have made a lot of different decisions as a teenager.”

Lotteries snubs two local major projects Malcolm Hopwood Two major Mid Canterbury projects have been declined grants by the Lotteries Community Facilities Fund. The Mount Somers Walkway Society had hoped to receive $80,000 to continue work to restore access to Sharplin Falls after the track closed in 2015 when a large rockfall, generated by earthquakes, destroyed part of the entry. The society recently received approval from the Department of Conservation (DOC) to allow people back into the area along a new track which replaces the original walkway. Funding co-ordinator for the society, Jack Allan, is “hugely disappointed” with the decision and has contacted Internal Affairs to ask why their application was declined. “We felt we’d met the criteria,” he said. “The society deserves better than getting nothing.”

Allan said he’ll now look to other funders to see if the remaining amount can be raised so the walkway can reopen before winter next year. Trott’s Community Garden Charitable Trust has also had their application for a major grant declined. Trust chairman, Tony Todd, is dismayed their request to bring their national and internationally recognised garden into community ownership and repay the initial funders has been turned down. “The trust board is obviously disappointed, particularly as it received significant financial support locally from Mid and South Canterbury Community Trust, Lion Foundation, Advance Ashburton, the Rotary Club of Ashburton plus many personal gifts,” he said. He questioned the Lotteries decision, because local funders recognise Trott’s “is a vital cog in the tourism industry in attracting visitors to the district”. “The trustees are determined to continue their quest to bring this project to a positive conclusion to ensure it isn’t lost and we’re now actively pursuing alternative funding options,” he said.

Road works winding down Jonathan Leask Work on the Walnut Avenue intersections project will take a three-week break. Fulton Hogan will shut works down from December 22 until January 11, with traffic management reduced as much as possible during the summer holiday period to mitigate delays. The temporary roundabouts will be maintained with bollards as well as pedestrian refuge crossings on both East and

West streets, with designated pedestrian routes fenced off through the site. Cones will be pushed back as far as possible and removed from the central medians to open up the carriageway with fencing maintained along construction zones. Speed restrictions will be maintained at 30kph. When work restarts on January 11 Fulton Hogan will be completing the new stormwater basins, installing the traffic signal ducting across West Street, and continuing to construct the footpaths and wider pavement areas. From February, they will begin pavement construction on

East and West streets and begin installing the traffic lights. So far Fulton Hogan have cleared the site and removed the existing roundabouts, widened the road and constructed new footpaths. New kerbs and median islands have been poured and construction is under way on the new asphalt pavements of East and West Streets. They have installed and relocated stormwater and other services and started work on installing the new streetlights and traffic signals. The project, which started in August, is expected to take 18 months and be complete in late 2022.

Three Waters fight not over Ashburton joins Communities 4 Local Democracy campaign Jonathan Leask The Ashburton District Council is part of a newly formed and growing group of councils called Communities 4 Local Democracy that will take their concerns over the Three Waters reforms to Parliament. The 22 councils, a third of the 67 councils and representing more than a million people, will present their alternative ideas to Parliament so that $60 billion worth of assets aren’t taken off them. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown was not in Wellington with the other leaders to launch the campaign on Wednesday, but said he and the other local councillors fully support the campaign.

Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown The group was created in response to serious concerns about the Government’s Three Waters reforms, and numbers are growing as local councils consider the implications of the proposed legislation – in particular losing control of approximately $60 billion of community owned assets across the whole

country. “Like the Government, we want to ensure all New Zealanders have access to safe drinking water and we are committed to working with the Government to achieve that,” Mayor Brown said. “No-one disputes the need for investment, but there’s a better way to achieve the Government’s objectives and we want to work in partnership with them on that. “Our action group will introduce fresh ideas for better water. “But our fresh ideas will ensure that our local communities continue to have a say on how the assets that they have bought and paid for are used to achieve our health and environmental goals.” Brown said that by joining with others, councils hoped to generate enough political pressure on Government for it to consider altering its decision. “This is an inclusive campaign

– it’s about safe drinking water for all New Zealanders, whoever and wherever they are. “More meaningful Mana Whenua representation is an important part of that. “It’s also an apolitical campaign – we’re completely focused on the issue regardless of political affiliation. “We are the elected local voice of our communities – communities that are very clearly telling us that they don’t want control of the assets that generations of our ratepayers built up and paid for being snatched away from them as part of the Government’s plan. “We don’t believe that the best solution lies in putting our assets into what will be four of the largest companies in New Zealand – and then denying our communities their say in how those companies are run.” Communities 4 Local Democracy is taking a constructive ap-

proach to the situation by commissioning expert advice on alternative models that might achieve the objectives of Government and local communities. One of the alternatives is operating Three Waters in a similar fashion that Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency operates around roading. It will be sharing its findings when they are complete. The council coalition announcement follows in the revelations in Cabinet papers released last week that the mandating of Three Waters was agreed to on June 14, which included a “staged approach to the release of information and policy announcements” and “[consideration] of a legislated ‘all in’ approach to reform”. It was confirmed last week that legislation on the reforms would be delayed until the New Year to provide more time for the working group to offer feedback.

Council divided; more vaccine passes introduced Recipient Amy

Adam Burns More council facilities will be mandated to vaccine passport requirements after it was decided in chambers yesterday. Members of the public wanting to access facilities including the public library, the Art Gallery and the Heritage Centre and Methven’s Mt Hutt Memorial Hall will need to provide a My Vaccine Pass at each site under both the orange and red settings of the Government’s Traffic Light System. Other sites included the Ashburton District Council Chambers, the Ashburton Administration Building and the Ashburton Holiday Park are now subject to the same requirements. In one of the more uncomfortable decisions facing elected members, council was largely split in supporting the introduction of vac-

cine passports at facilities where the debate around public health and “freedom of choice” was a prevailing theme during debate. Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown admitted prior to discussion that it was not an easy decision with council chief executive Hamish Riach noting that all councils around the country “were wrestling with the matter”. Mayor Brown, who has been vocal during the district’s vaccination push, suggested the mandate would be unfair on the unvaccinated. “I’m not supporting the motion as it is … you can go to a supermarket, service station and you don’t need a vaccine pass. “If you go to schools, the doctors, the police station you don’t need to be vaccinated, but they do. “I do agree with keeping the public safe.” He was joined by councillors Angus McKay, Lynette Lovett, and Carolyn Cameron in opposing the move to introduce vaccine passes at facilities. McKay referred to vaccine passes not being required at supermarkets

which were frequented by more of the public than council facilities. “I do not agree with mandating vaccine passes to public services,” he said. “New Zealand is not a communist country … everyone is responsible for their own health.” Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan hoped it was a temporary measure and councillor Leen Braam said the virus was too unpredictable. “The best thing we can do for our community is to keep it as safe as we can.” Decisions around vaccine passports on club rooms and facilities, on council land, would be at the clubs’ discretion. The guidelines would be reviewed as “soon as practically possible” by the chief executive should the Covid-19 restrictions for the district ease.

House prices continue rise The facts

Jonathan Leask House prices in Ashburton have increased 23.9 per cent in the last 12 months according to the latest date from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). The median house price in the district in November was $477,000 compared to $385,000 in November 2020. However, it was down 4.6 per cent on October’s record of $500,000. There were 59 sales reported in November, down 23 per cent on the 77 sold in the same period last year. “There still aren’t enough houses on the market to keep up with demand,” Harcourts Ashburton business owner, Tammy McDougall, said. “Good quality, well presented and well marketed properties are selling well and for good prices. “Buyers across all ranges are struggling to find the right property for their preferred budget, often coming to the realisation after missing out on a few properties, that their budget can’t buy what they want as prices have moved upwards so rapidly. “We aren’t seeing a huge number of first home buyers actively shopping in this market, however, the higher end of the market remains strong.” Around 80 per cent of buyers were coming from out of town McDougall said. “We are seeing an increase in the number of New Zealand residents living overseas who are buying properties planning to return here to live in the future.

Median Prices in November District 2021 (2020) Ashburton $477,000 ($385,000) Christchurch City $700,500 ($545,000) Selwyn $870,000 ($576,000) Timaru $445,000 ($401,000) Waimakariri $732,000 ($520,000)

“Investors from the North Island are also very active. “Covid has created this trend and I think we will continue to see more people relocating to our area, which will continue to add pressure while there is not a lot of stock on the market.” Both trends, increasing prices and lower sales, were matched regionally with Canterbury recoding a record median price in November of $690,000 – up 31.4 per cent year-on-year – the region’s sixth consecutive record median. Selwyn remains the most expensive district with a record median of $870,000 (compared to $57,000 in November 2020). Christchurch City ($700,500), and Wai-

makariri District ($732,000) also recorded record medians. Reinz chief executive Jen Baird said the market in Canterbury has been steady despite a decrease in inventory levels of 18.7 per cent and listings of 1.3 per cent. The number of sales in the region in November were down 15.9 per cent, but the 1176 properties sold was the highest sales count since April 2021. “Buyer demand is strong, particularly for modern builds,” Baird said. “Investors have remained conservative but active – the change in Government regulations has shifted focus in this area. “Buyers are struggling to secure finance, which has resulted in more vendors look-

ing for cleaner offers through auctions instead of conditional offers.” The trend towards auctions continues with 40.9 per cent of sales in November coming through an auction compared to 22.3 per cent in November 2020. “Anecdotally, there was an increase in people downsizing and moving to outer suburbs as i n f ra s t r u c t u re and townships grow, offering outstanding lifestyle opportunities. Tammy McDougall Properties are selling fast she said with the median days to sell at 26 days – Canterbury’s lowest November median days to sell since 2006. Nationally, the median price hit a new record of $925,000, a 23.8 per cent increase from $747,000 in November 2020. See this week’s Guardian Property liftout

National honour for Winchmore woman Malcolm Hopwood For the last six months, Sandra Curd has co-ordinated a provincial Rural Women’s team who’ve dropped off hundreds of food parcels to farming families affected by the May floods throughout Ashburton District. It’s actions like those that’s seen her recognised for the highest national Rural Women’s honour for 2021. Last week she received the Olive Craig award for “long and outstanding service to Rural Women”. Following the floods in late May, Curd and other rural women saw the need to support farming families and their workers and organised a regular drop of food and provisions to people whose properties were damaged in the floods. The final distribution of Christmas goodies to 42 families was made on December 6. Curd, who had no idea of the honour, received it together with the member of excellence badge and the Olive Craig silver trophy at the Mid Canterbury Provincial Rural Women’s meeting in Ashburton last week. “My immediate reaction was disbelief, but I was very humbled,” she said. “I owe so much of my achievements to my husband, Rupert,

who died in 2019. “He supported me in all my work, both for rural women and other community activities.” Curd said the national award elevates the work that her organisation does in their capacity of strengthening, supporting and connecting with other rural women throughout New Zealand. She grew up on a farm in

Greenstreet until she met Rupert, a generational Winchmore farmer. “I’ve always been a rural girl. I love the space, being self-employed and working together as a team on the land,” she said. Curd became a Rural Women financial member 40 years ago and started attending Winchmore meetings in 1986. Her involvement has extended

from Winchmore branch to Mid Canterbury Provincial RWNZ, the Canterbury Area Committee and then nationally as conference secretary for the last three NZ conferences and conduit between the national board and Canterbury. Her citation lists the positions of responsibility she’s held, awards she’s received, initiatives and numerous involvements at

a branch, provincial and regional level. She was branch president when the Calendar Girls project was ratified which saw more than $26,000 donated to Breast Cancer research, she played a major role in the Safe Houses promotion for Women’s Refuge, knitted many hats and gloves for those in need and has been the RWNZ representative on the Kate Sheppard Memorial Trust. A particular cause has been highlighting mental health issues among the rural community compounded by Covid-19, mycoplasma bovis, flooding events, “government promises which aren’t forthcoming” and “the lack of maintenance and restoration work from ECan”. “In continuing to enforce regulations on the rural community, the government is contributing to an increase in mental health problems,” she said. “If we lose one person, it’s one person too many.” Curd has also been campaigning for motorists to reduce their speed to 20kph either way when passing a stationary school bus. “There’s been incidents of children killed when walking across the road from a school bus. We want motorists to slow down. “Buses that display a flashing light go some way to addressing the problem.” Now she’s received the award, she has no particular project she wants to dedicate it to, beyond “continuing the work she’s done and supporting Rural Women members”.

Sleigh bells ringing, and the choir singing Maddison Gourlay Ashburton Trust Event Centre general manager Roger Farr is excited to bring a Christmas event to the community. It is the first time Farr has organised a Christmas concert, which will be taking to the stage on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. The 17 Christmas song extravaganza aims to be the highlight of the holiday season and the last show of the year at the event centre. Due to Covid restrictions, many events in the community and at the event centre have been cancelled or postponed, so Farr decided that a concert for the community would be a great way to finish off 2021. “We put the word out and we ended up with 22 replies, with

people willing to give up their time to practice and perform as part of the concert,” Farr said. “We can’t thank them enough for coming on board and doing it. “It has kind of fallen into place from there really. “Most of the cast will be recognised, most of them were regular performers on stage from Variety Theatre Ashburton.” Some cast members are making their way back home to perform on stage for the Christmas concert, with a few travelling from Christchurch, Timaru, and one from Auckland. Covid restrictions will be in place at the event, with all patrons required to provide their vaccine passport which will be scanned by staff upon entry. Due to the venue making use of vaccine passports, it means they are able to cater for larger audiences for different acts and keep the community safe. It also means they are encouraging people to arrive earlier and be prepared with their vaccine pass to avoid delays.

Local shops – use them or lose them

S

hop Smart. Shop Local. Four words that you should have seen or read a lot of in the past six weeks. I’m referring to the Guardian’s community-boosting Shop Smart, Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign. The campaign started at the end of October and was supposed to be all over red rover about now. But it’s not. And it’s not because of the pleas from local businesses to keep it going but the generous support of the Ashburton District Council. The council, acknowledging the particular importance to the community of having a thriving and now picturesque CBD, has stepped up to offer commercial support to allow the Guardian to keep the campaign going until at least the end of December, but more likely into January as well. That’s fantastic news and a real thumbs-up to the team at the

Daryl Holden council. “We’re all in this together,’’ Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said. “This is an example of what a tight-knit community can do to help each other out.’’ And our close community have needed to combine forces because, without putting a fine point on it, some local businesses are close to going under after one of the worst trading periods in decades mostly because of the ongoing pandemic and now a world-wide goods’ supply issue. We’ve needed to promote their businesses, tell everyone what they do, who they are and why we should support them, and how

lucky we are to have them. The message is as simple as this: Use them or lose them. We don’t want to lose any of our local businesses – retailers or otherwise – so now it’s up to you and I and your mate down the road to go local, especially in the run-in to the big guy in red arriving. It sounds easy and it is easy. Let’s make it happen. Your community needs it.

And one more thing . . . Something to make you smile. This little yarn came my way at the weekend. Enjoy. Dear IT Support, Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend to Husband and noticed a distinct slowdown in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend. In addition, Husband unin-

stalled many other valuable programmes, such as Romance and Personal Attention and then installed undesirable programmes such as Cricket, Rugby, Golfing and Continuous TV. Conversation no longer runs and House Cleaning simply crashes the system. I’ve tried running Nagging to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do? Signed, Desperate Diana Dear Desperate Diana, First keep in mind that Boyfriend is an Entertainment Package, while Husband is an Operating System. Please enter the command: http: I Thought You Loved Me.html and try to download Tears. Don’t forget to install the Guilt update. If that application works as designed, Husband should then automatically run the applications Jewellery and Flowers, but remember that over-use of

the above application can cause Husband to default to Grumpy Silence, Garden Shed or Beer. Beer is a very bad programme that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta. Whatever you do, please DO NOT install mother-in-law (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources). Also, do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend programme. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband. In summary, Husband is a great system, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. It also tends to work better running one task at a time. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Food and Hot Lingerie. Good luck, IT Support

Looking to the future with some greater certainty Jo Luxton RANGITATA MP

I

t’s been a big year and, as 2021 winds to an end, it’s great to see people here in Ashburton enjoying the start to summer despite the cool weather! Thank you to everyone who’s helped to make our move into the framework smooth: business owners who’ve sorted their vaccine pass protocols, friends meeting up for a coffee with their passes in hand, and all those making sure to keep masking up and scanning in. It’s a testament to our community’s commitment to keep us all as safe as possible and with the new way of managing Covid we can look forward to a summer with fewer disruptions and more certainty. At Orange, vaccine passes mean restrictions like being seated and separated, or limiting the number of people able to enter, are no longer required in many places – if all customers and staff are fully vaccinated. In these settings, vaccine passes add an extra layer of protection for people who can’t be vaccinated, like young children. Thank you again to everyone here in Rangitata who has stepped up to get the vaccine. It’s brilliant that over 91 per cent of eligible people in Ashburton have received both doses, and it’s great news that the whole country is on track to reach the milestone of 90 per cent fully vaccinated very soon.

If you don’t have a My Vaccine Pass yet, I really encourage you to get yours sorted now to ensure you don’t miss out on the things you enjoy. If you’re fully vaccinated, you can request your pass by visiting mycovidrecord.nz or by calling 0800 222 478. If you’d like a hand downloading or printing your pass, feel free to get in touch and our team will be more than happy to help. Over the past couple of years, people across Aotearoa and the

district have worked hard to look out for each other. This has allowed us to enter this new phase better placed than many other countries, with fewer hospitalisations and deaths, a strong economy, and one of the highest vaccination rates in the world. Everyone in the Ashburton District has pulled together to contribute to this successful approach. Thank you, again, for keeping each other safe through the

pandemic. The work means we’re now able to look forward to another great Mid Canterbury summer, and more opportunities in 2022. Jo Luxton is a Labour MP. LETTERS Second bridge location The debate over the location of the second bridge for Ashburton is certainly not over. After reading in the Ashburton Guardian, November 20, that mayors throughout the country along with their councils and councillors are not happy because the government is not listening to local government and insisting on mandating of the Three Waters which is against all democratic rules. We understand this is a bigger issue than our second bridge, but the same can be said of our mayor and elected councillors over the location of the second Ashburton bridge. The mayor and councillors are not listening to the community. The community said no to the second bridge on Chalmers Avenue. You, as councillors, are representing us, so please listen to what we are asking for. We want a second bridge to be located on State Highway 1 on West Street over the river and it be fully funded by NZTA. Councillors are elected by the people to represent them and ensure that the wishes of the community are listened to.

Councillors are clutching at straws saying about the costings done etc, it’s the council’s job to work with NZTA and our council needs to be more assertive and stronger in their dealings with NZTA to ensure that the State Highway within our district is at a standard that our community would expect. NZTA have sat quietly in the background while our council and counillors keep quoting Chalmers Avenue for the second bridge. Chalmers Avenue is not a state

highway, it’s classed residential. We want the government to do their job and improve State Highway 1 through Ashburton. We want the second bridge now, not in 10 years’ time. They have funds to make this happen. It’s a State Highway and everyone deserves a safe State Highway. Bev Skates Ashburton District Council Chief Executive Hamish Riach responds: Councillors voted on October 6, 2021 to progress to the third and

final stage of a detailed business case for the second bridge. Chalmers Avenue was the preferred location then and the preferred location back in 2014, when council sought a Notice of Requirement for land that would be needed. Council consulted with the community then and considered feedback for the proposal. Our local community has told us that current delays and trouble accessing the State Highway is a big problem. A second bridge from Chalmers Avenue to Tinwald

would create safer passage for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists and achieve better connectivity for not only Ashburton, but the whole South Island, in the event the State Highway bridge was out of commission. The second stage of the threestep business case process confirmed the majority of journeys across the existing bridge were local, between Tinwald and Ashburton. The same report said Waka Kotahi considered a duplicate bridge at State Highway 1, but it would be technically more difficult and more expensive. The work has Waka Kotahi support so far and we look forward to the completion of the detailed business case.

Trophy won, now Mid Canterbury has to keep it in the cabinet Matt Markham The Mid Canterbury Tennis Centre has a new bit of bling sitting in its trophy cabinet, and the challenge is now to keep it there. The Mid Canterbury senior side are now the proud holders of the coveted Shirley Dalzell Memorial Trophy – a challenge trophy that has been on the line for more than 20 years between sub association senior sides from Mid Canterbury, Malvern, Ellesmere, North Canterbury and Christchurch City. And after beating Malvern on Sunday, its home for now – and

hopefully a lot longer – is Ashburton. The honour of having your name engraved on the trophy, however, only comes at the end of the season to the side who hold it through the winter months, something Mid Canterbury has never achieved, and they’re quite keen to alter that this season. They’ll put it on the line when they play Ellesmere early in February next year and then there’s one other clash late in the season. So, two fixtures to win and they can achieve what up until this point has proved impossible. On the weekend the 16-strong local side had to work hard to pick it up, but were able to stave off the Malvern challenge to win the overall tie 9-7 in matches. Playing mens, ladies and mixed doubles across the day, the two sides couldn’t be split after both the men’s and the ladies matches, winning four games each. Mid Canterbury claimed three wins in the men’s games while Malvern did the same in the ladies. As scores flowed in from the mixed doubles matches, the contest remained tight, but Mid Canterbury were able to claim victory by picking up five of the eight matches to get the victory and bring home the silverware.

CLUB NEWS Ashburton Bowling Club

At the Rakaia Fours half day on the 6th December, Ashburton’s team of Tony Blain, Doug Kinvig, Annette Blain, Russell Lowe (a family affair) came seconnd. The Ladies Championship Triples Final was washed out by rain on Tuesday but was successfully completed on Thursday. Before a very good gathering of onlookers, Heather Goodall’s team with Shirley Maw and Judie Ryk beat Diana King’s team with Alison Gibbs and Shirley Taylor in a tightly competed match. Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the losers. In MSA’s Friday triples (played at Ashburton BC), Ashburton’s Reg McGarry, as part of a composite team, came 1st. We wish the MSA Club all the best on being reunited with their repaired green in the New Year and thank them for their respectful use of Ashburton BC’s facilities. It has been a pleasure being able to assist them whilst the remedial work was carried at their club. Good luck gentlemen! Under grey skies, the Milsom Cup 2 bowl triples (men only), sponsored by Liquorland and Patersons Funeral Services, was successfully played on Sunday. The results are as follows: 1st C Moore, M Grice, N Atkinson – 3 wins, 31 ends, 46 pts, 2nd T Inwood, W McCarthy, A Huband – 3 wins, 30 ends, 64 pts, 3rd G Clarke, J Ford, D McEvedy – 3 wins, 25 ends, 40 pts, 4th M Anderson, M Quinn, R Gutberlet – 2 wins, 1 draw, 28 ends, 48 pts. Congratulations to all those placed, but especially Ashburton’s team who came fourth.

hand up. This will more than likely be my last blurb for the year, as after a bit of a wait, I will be getting my new bionic hip chucked in next week, so wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. Hopefully catch you around the course next year. Good golfing.

Before the break, we have the in-house Dorothy Cup at 5.30pm on Thursday, the Friday Triples on Friday and the Christmas Dinner in the Club Rooms on Saturday. From all of us at Ashburton Bowling Club, have a very happy and peaceful Christmas everyone! See you in the Summer!

The rain put a bit of a damper on the Radius Care Xmas Salvers last Saturday, but 40 hardy souls turned up to try and grab some Christmas cheer, and as Captain Tom had bought 45 prizes the odds seemed quite good. Sue Hastie led the way with a superb 41 points to grab the Ladies Salver and George Brown’s 37 points saw him pick up the men’s.

Other good scores on 36 points were Timmy Newton, Leaky Lambert and Bev Chinn, followed by Rob Pawsey, Pauly Greer, Brad Fallaver and President Bruce. Well done to all, even Daz Peace daring to put his card in, with only 15 points on it, still, a box of mince pies is not to be sniffed at. This round was also the first round of the Property Brokers Shootout qualifying, the club’s favourite tournament. I am not sure how many of these players put in for shootout, but I know that the usual suspects George and Bev will have. They always seem to rise up the charts when its shootout time, they are great supporters of the shoot out and no doubts they will be in the final again. Second qualifying round is this Saturday then with no golf on Christmas day

Gray ends year on winning note Kyle Gray played his cards early and it paid off handsomely when he lifted the Tinwald Cycling Club, NBS Ashburton, Club Champions title on Sunday. Raced around the Wakanui Beach block over 64km, the first split of the race came 10km

in, as the bunch creased the second rise. The break saw 9 riders go clear and settle into their work with the major prize in their sights. Fresh from claiming victory in the 5 Passes Tour, Gray attacked the group with 6km to go and backed his prolonged power to stay away. The chasing bunch gave nothing away, but Gray held on bravely to claim the win by one second on the line from the fast finishing Steve Hands. Gray rode the distance in 89.55. Larry Neal was in the thick of the finish to claim third. Fourth placegetter Tony Ward lifted the vet 3 ribbon. Cole Harris dug deep to secure the senior men’s title, while Michael Gallagher pro-

duced a top ride to claim the vet 2 spoils. Kristine Marriott laid down one of her trademark tough rides to get into the front break with her efforts earning the women’s Club Championship title. Monique Brake put in a solid day’s work in chasing group to claim the vet 1 women’s ribbon and second place overall. Sam Cuttle’s efforts saw him lift the first under 19 home cup and ribbon. In the closest contest of the day Don Morrison outsprinted John Doherty to claim the vet 4 ribbon. Paul Brake produced his best race of the season to claim the sealed handicap honours. Junior club titles were also up for grabs, with a good field of riders contesting the 16km course. Mitch Brookland made his last race as a junior one to remember taking out the under 17 champions title. Zoe Spillane continued her good season lifting the under 17 girls’ ribbon. Zac Brookland rounded out a great day for Team Brookland securing the under 15 boys’ title. Eliza McKenzie was rewarded for a great ride with the under 15 girls’ ribbon. Tom Reid pulled out all the stops to take the sealed handicap honours. Division 2 saw a close fought battle with Kerry Clough coming out on top, with Ross Templeton and Debbie Skinner filling the final podium spots.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Love fills your entire world because you see some version of it wherever your eyes land. Even the grass seems to sing love songs to the sun; the mountains give friendship to the sky. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You are discovering your inner rock star today, playing the scene like a power chord, right on time, with a charismatic attitude and the tone people need to hear. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): It is said that math is the language of the cosmos, but emotion will be the universal tongue you speak today, projecting feelings that resonate in the world to bring unanticipated outcomes to life. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It’s better not to assume the intentions of others, as many act unintentionally and many more have intentions you would never guess. Therefore, it would be pointless to waste thought on. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Because you’ve made a decision to be in control of your life, relationships and circumstances in opposition to your goal have come to a standstill. Lack of common interests will do that, and, in this case, it’s a welcome sign of progress. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): When you find yourself around people with the attributes you admire, it’s because you are either like this as well or developing in this direction. You were meant to be inspired and supported. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’re not trying to change anyone. True, it would rather convenient for you if they did change, but there are plenty of remarkably accessible people out there who already embody what you need. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Of course, you want to focus on what’s important, but today brings some confusion as to what fits the category. Hint: It’s small, emotional in nature and couldn’t happen on any other day. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): It is normal to, at times, feel uncomfortable, displaced or lost in the unfamiliar. These feelings accompany the passages of life you will one day be proud of. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): It is so hard for you to take a compliment, and yet it is so easy for you to believe someone’s unwanted critique. In general, this is a good day to ignore the opinions of others. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): An intriguing future is forming in your imagination. This is just one of many possibilities, so why are you already putting limits on it? Practice unbound visualisation and watch your reality free up. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There are people who make you feel good and people who don’t. To be with people in the latter category isn’t a waste; you often learn the most from them. That said, why make them your first choice?
