Letham ‘will be sorely missed’
The Ashburton District has lost a “big community man”.
Ashburton District Councillor Rodger Letham died at Ashburton Hospital on Saturday after he was admitted a week ago, suffering from a respiratory illness.
The 78-year-old was serving his second term on council and Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown expressed his sadness at the sudden loss.
Brown said Letham was a big community man, a strong and committed councillor, and he would be sorely missed.
“He has lived in this district for all his life and was a well-known farmer and then rural real estate agent before joining council,” Brown said.
“Rodger was a wise and experienced head around the council table and a respected colleague and friend.”
Former four-term councillor Stuart Wilson had known Letham, both Timaru Boys’ alumni, since they were in Young Farmers together 50 years ago.
Wilson also dealt with Letham in his real estate role where he was “someone I could trust implicitly”.
Prior to Letham standing for council, Wilson said they would often have debates about the district and council decisions.
As a Western ward councillor he also sat on the Methven Community Board and board chair Kelvin Holmes said Letham was “a good community-minded person”.
Letham was a real estate agent for 35 years with Property Brokers, selling rural property until
stepping down in 2021.
A former pilot, he was keenly interested in things aviation and used that knowledge as a member of the Ashburton Airport Authority.
He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Ashburton and the MSA Men’s Choir.
Letham’s family had been farming in the district for over 100 years and he worked the farm his parents Selwyn and Ida bought in 1951.
Selwyn was a long-serving Ashburton County Councillor before the county and borough councils merged, Brown said and “Rodger was proud that he was also able to serve his community in the same way as his father”.
“Rodger was a good man and he put his name forward for council because he wanted to give something back to a community that had served him well.
“Our thoughts are with his wife Yvonne, and his immediate family at this time.”
A service to celebrate Letham’s life will be held at the Ashburton Event Centre on Thursday at 2pm.
Letham’s death will require a by-election in the Western ward, the details of which will be confirmed in the new year.
In the recent election, Letham was successful in his bid for re-election, as was deputy mayor Liz McMillan, with Dame Lynda Topp the only other candidate.

Football World Cup final in Qatar with Argentina facing off against reigning champions France.
Argentina got off to good start scoring two goals in the first half.
“We were shouting and screaming when we scored the first two goals,” Gomez said.
There were tears, shouting and everything in between. That was the experience of one Argentinian family as they revelled in world cup glory.
Gaston Gomez and his family were up in the early hours of the morning for a 4am start to the FIFA
It wasn’t until the 79th minute that France scored their first goal, and levelling up the score two minutes later.
From there the match went into 30 minutes of extra time where each team scored another goal forcing the match into pen-

“We can relax now,” Gomez said.
“We were crying and shouting at the top of our voices.
“The end of the game with all the extra time and penalty shootout was so stressful to watch.”
The family joined millions of Argentinian fans rejoicing in a victory in the country’s most loved sport in 36 years, heading out for a special breakfast yesterday morning.
“Everyone in Argentina plays football, or at least knows the rules.
“This may be the last time in my lifetime I see them win, I hope not though,” Gomez said.
The football loving family chose Ashburton eight years ago when they moved from Argentina and have never looked backed.
“There is a big group of Argentines in Ashburton, I think we are the third biggest migrant community,” Gomez said.
“We are heading to Christ-
church tonight to celebrate with other fans.”
The family has one special player, Lionel Messi, who was one of the stars of the match, scoring two goals and then another in the penalty shootout.
“It was amazing to see him win the world cup,” said Gomez adding that at 35 this could be the last time he will contest a world cup.
“He is an amazing player on the pitch, but also off the pitch he is great with the fans and media. He’s really respectable.”
An inquiry next week into the death of apprentice jockey Megan Taylor at Ashburton is not expected to be completed until early next year.
The 26-year-old was killed when she fell from her ride in the second race of the day at last Thursday’s meeting on the Ashburton Racecourse and now local racing officials are preparing to honour the fallen jockey when racing returns there tomorrow.
An Ashburton Racing Club spokesperson confirmed to the Guardian that a minute’s silence would take place in the birdcage at 12.45pm tomorrow prior to the beginning of the club’s meeting – less than a week after the tragic fall. Similar events took place at race meetings across the country over the weekend.
“I’d love to think we could fill the birdcage,” they said.

Speaking at the weekend, John Oatham, who is a member of the Racing Integrity Board who oversee racing in New Zealand, said it was unclear when the inquiry would be completed.
With a busy racing schedule ahead, from tomorrow there are 12 race meetings across the country in the space of nine days of racing, and given the amount of shock and emotion following the tragedy, an inquiry timeline hadn’t been confirmed.
WorkSafe is also investigating the incident, while police have referred Taylor’s death to the coroner.
Friends of Sam Wynne, another jockey who was injured in the fall, confirmed over the weekend she had undergone surgery to repair her broken collarbone.
She also suffered broken ribs and a broken pelvis.
Eleven races will be held at tomorrow’s Ashburton meeting with the first race under way at 1.28pm.
2023 completion date for Chinese settlement
Malcolm HopwoodA major archaeological project that started in Ashburton in 2008 will finally be completed later next year.
Project manager for the Ng King Brothers Chinese Market Garden Settlement on Allens Road, Arlene Baird from Ero Consulting, said it’s been “a marathon, not a sprint” because of the organisations who’ve come together to fund the community facility.
This year has been spent stabilising the existing buildings by fitting a sub-roof under the original iron and lifting the structures to build a foundation. They’ve also been tidied both internally and externally.
The next stage of the settlement, which is listed as a category one historic place, will be to complete and install eight interpretive panels around the location.
These will tell people about the site, how the Chinese families came here, their social history and the different buildings used for cooking, eating, sleeping, office administration, education, laundry and sales.
“The Chinese Poll Tax Trust has paid $20,000 for the panels. We’re installing them in strategic locations on site during the first half of next year,” Baird said.
Drainage is being laid in January and February along the front and
back of the building and, once it’s completed, landscaping will begin. This involves shingling the area between the buildings, creating pathways and seating throughout the wider site.
“The pathways will form a figure of eight which is a Chinese lucky number. Other landscaping will depict Chinese planting with both native New Zealand and Chinese trees,” she said.
“It will be a nod to what the site
was used for.”
Once the landscaping is completed and the fence goes in, the settlement will be open to the public next year but no definite date has been confirmed, Baird said.
“Their families want to give it back to the community. They see it as preserving the heritage structures where people can come, relax and use it as a community facility,” she said.
Baird said it’s very significant
Chinese settlers came to Ashburton in the early 20th century to establish their market garden settlement and now 100 years later their descendants are working hard on its restoration to commemorate their elders.
“It will be a lasting memorial to the settlers. In terms of heritage we can’t emphasise enough how important this site is. It has the highest acknowledgement that Heritage NZ can give,” she said.
Baird
It’s the only known site of its type and era in New Zealand that remains in existence and has archaeological, cultural historical and social significance she said.
At its peak during the late 1940s and 50s the settlement had about 12 houses with as many as 80 people living and working there.
Cancer patients will welcome Keytruda
Malcolm HopwoodThe availability of Keytruda to lung cancer patients from April
1, 2023 will be welcomed by Ashburton people suffering from the illness.
The national president of the Cancer Society of New Zealand, Alister Argyle, is relieved Keytruda has finally been added to Pharmac’s list.
The “inhibitor will lead to massive improvements in cancer out-
comes for lung cancer patients,” he said.
“Its availability gives them an increased prospect of a positive outcome because, in many cases, it extends survival periods.”
Argyle said the Cancer Society has been pressuring Pharmac for the inclusion of Keytruda for some time.
“If you compare the five year survival outcomes for patients on Keytruda compared to those on currently funded chemotherapy treatments available here, twice as many lung cancer patients are still alive with Keytruda,” he said.
New Zealand will be the 60th in the world to fund Keytruda.
Argyle said that Keytruda will improve the rates of recovery for Maori cancer patients and reduce the imbalance in survival rates between Maori and other ethnicities.
Argyle, who is from Ashburton, has just begun the third year of a four-year term as national president.
Standing ovation for Simon O’Neill
Simon O’Neill was true to his word. When he won the classical Grammy as the voice on a recording of Mahler’s eighth symphony recording, he promised to bring it home.
On Sunday, to a near capacity audience in the Ashburton Event Centre, O’Neill did more than that.
Together with soprano, Olivia Pike, also from Ashburton, he showcased his brilliant voice in a menagerie of opera solos and duets, Christmas favourites and musical theatre.
Linking Puccini, Verdi, Wagner and others, O’Neill explained the story behind his selection and paid tribute to Ashburton as the inspiration for his singing.
Of the many highlights was Puccini’s Recondita armonia.
Wagner’s WIntersturme, Pike’s evocative I Know That My Redeemer Liveth and Richard Strauss Die Nacht.
Both are accomplished pianists and they accompanied each other, sometimes duetting from the piano stool.
O’Neill touched on emotion when playing Danny Boy as a tribute to Ashburton District councillor Roger Letham, who sadly passed away suddently on Saturday.

Hard work reaps rewards
After a decade of cadetship, a young St John cadet sergeant has been awarded for her efforts.
She’s 17-year-old Amelia Swan, and she was recently awarded the Young Totara Award by the Ashburton Plains Rotary Club.
“I didn’t even know I’d been nominated so when we got the phone call I was a bit surprised,” Swan said.
The Young Totara Award recognises the positive achievements of our young people, promotes sound role models for our youth and fosters responsible attitudes towards the community.
Swan has first started in St John when she was seven, in an effort to meet more people locally when her family moved to Ashburton.
Ten years later she has worked her way up the ranks in the cadet programme to take the leadership position as a cadet sergeant.
“As a sergeant I help lead the other younger kids.”
Along with being sergeant Swan has put in the hours to achieve the Grand Prior Award, the highest award that can be presented to youth members in St John. To achieve the Grand Prior Award she had to complete 12 badges and 100 hours of community service.
“Each badge has different requirements, they include first aid, arts, and also faith.”
“We learn quite a bit stuff, it is quite broad.”
A person very proud of her work was St John’s Elaine Vallender, who nominated Swan for the Totara award.
“Amelia has moved up the ranks of St John, from a very shy and junior member to an outstanding young woman who is already making a difference in the world,” Vallender said.
Right – As part of the Young Totara Award, Amelia Swan had a Totara planted in her honour at the Totara Grove on Smallbone Drive. Ashburton Plains Rotary Club director of Community Service committee John Duncan helps plant the tree.
Swan’s highlight was competing in the St John National Youth Festival in Wellington last year, which she had to be selected for.
“The South Island actually won, which was pretty cool,” Swan said.
Thanks for Santa’s Little Helper promotion
Thank you so much to the Ashburton Guardian for again organising such a positive Santa’s Little Helper promotion in Ashburton leading up to Christmas – and to Santa’s little helpers themselves.
The Ashburton Society of St Vincent de Paul cannot believe the generosity of gifts donated by the participating retailers and businesses.
Those gifts are, and will be, distributed to local families
in Mid Canterbury prior to Christmas.
You cannot underestimate the joy those gifts bring to the children who receive them and the thankfulness of their parents.
Thank you once again to our supportive local firms, especially in these tough times.
Yours sincerely, Evans Chibanguza, president Ashburton Society of St Vincent de Paul
Ruralco appoints Sir David Carter as new chair
The Ruralco Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Sir David Carter as its new chair following the decision by previous chair and director, Jessie Chan, to stand down from her role at last month’s annual general meeting.
David has served on the Ruralco Board since 2020. Prior to this, he competed a successful 26 year parliamentary career which saw him chair numerous select committees as a Member of Parliament before becoming a Senior Cabinet Minister from 2008 until 2012.
This included being Minister of Agriculture, Biosecurity, Economic Development, Forestry, and Primary Industries from 2008 to 2012 before being elected Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament at the start of 2013.
In December 2020 David was awarded a Knighthood recognising his 26 years of public service.
Though city born and bred, David’s passion was always to be a farmer and armed with a B.Agr.Sc
degree from Lincoln University, he started farming at West Melton and went on to establish New Zealand’s first commercial embryo transplant company to help introduce “exotic” cattle breeds to Australia and New Zealand.
As a sole trading farming enterprise, David has purchased, developed, farmed, and sold a number of farm properties over a 50 year farming career.
He currently farms 10,000 stock unit sheep and beef breeding and fattening operations, spread over three properties on Banks Peninsula and in North Canterbury.
Sir David Carter comments “I am honoured to be appointed by the board to the chair role. I am committed to supporting our CEO and executive team to continue the good work done to date by all of our people.”
David brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for agriculture to his new role and the Ruralco Board congratulates him on his
appointment and looks forward to continuing to grow the business under his leadership.
Rob Sharkie, Group CEO Ruralco says “David’s experience in both governance and farming has been valuable during his board tenure to date and with him now moving into the chair role we are looking forward to working together to build Ruralco into the partner of choice for rural New Zealand.”
Drenches – a sobering reality
BY PAT DEAVOLLSheep farmers are being asked to test the effectiveness of the drenches they are using in the wake of a sobering summary of drench resistance.
The report by national veterinary laboratory Gribbles Veterinary found 33 per cent of farms tested had trichosytrongylus worms that were resistant to triple combinations.
“In 2017, less than 7 per cent of the tests run showed triple combination resistance in any species and now 33 per cent of cases are showing up triple resistant trichostrongylus,” said Wormwise programme manager Ginny Dodunski.
“A combination (or triple) drench – most farmers will be using these – there are five main classes of drug that are used to treat internal parasites in sheep and cattle; combinations are a mix of two to three of these. The idea being that if a worm has the genetics to be resistant to one class of drug, it’s less likely to carry the genes for resistance to two or even three classes of drug,” Dodunski said.
“The use of combination drenches as a means to slow the development of drench resistance was advocated for situations where there was a low level of pre-existing resistance to the individual actives in the
drench, and where other known measures to delay drench resistance were also in place,” she said.
“Unfortunately, most farmers didn’t know their resistance status when they started using combos, and the other safety measures (such as not using long-acting treatments in ewes, and not wintering lambs in excess
of ewe replacements), have not been well understood or adopted.
Wormwise’s advice to sheep farmers was to ‘get tested yesterday’.
Many will be undertaking routine weaning drenches at the moment, Dodunski said.
“A great first step was to collect 10 fresh
faecal samples from lambs 10 days after you drenched them, and send them for a faecal egg count. If there were no eggs present after drenching, that’s great news, but if there were, that’s the start of a conversation with your animal health advisor.
“There are unlikely to be new sheep drenches released as sheep are such a small category globally for an ever-shrinking number of companies that develop farm animal health products.”
Farmers might take issue with the term ‘over-drenching’, Dodunski said, “but yes, in effect this has been one of the causes. I’d call it ‘farm systems that are heavily dependent on drench’.”
The best way forward for any farmer now is to ensure that their routine drench product/s are effective, she said.
“And secondly, look at ways they can manage their farm system to be less reliant on drench. A great place to start is the ewe flock – most of these should be able to be managed with no or minimal drench inputs with good feeding and attention to keeping ewes in good body condition,” Dodunski said.
Low methane emitting sheep show the way
By Pat DeavollLow methane-emitting sheep have made the headlines recently and one farm that has got on the bandwagon is Orari Gorge Station, just on the south side of the Rangitata River, near Peel Forest.
Owner Robert Peacock said he had been breeding for low methane-emitting sheep for three seasons now.
Orari Gorge had two studs, a romney and a romney-texel, and he was measuring both for low methane emissions.
AgResearch had a trailer that visited breeders with 12 Portable Accumulation Chambers (PAC) that could take one sheep at a time, he said.
Sheep went into the chamber for an hour and had their methane and CO2 emissions measured. They had to be well-fed beforehand with no change of diet for a few weeks.
Each animal was weighed on the day of the measurements and needed to be off-feed for at least an hour but no more than three hours before they went into the chamber.
This happened twice, at a 14-day interval. The resulting information was then used alongside other genetic information to calculate the methane value.
There was quite a bit of work involved, Peacock said.
“You have to measure a minimum of 12 progeny (six months or older) per sire that you want to calculate breeding values for. The more data, the more accurate the breeding values.
“AgResearch supplies the trailer and takes the measurements. The data is sent to Beef + Lamb Genetics to calculate the breeding values
through Sheep Improvement Limited (SIL) and nProve along with the other breeding values they calculate.”
Peacock said they measured many traits for their sheep – fertility, growth, survival, meat, wool, resistance, and resilience to worms and dags.
Methane was now another trait they could select for and it was up to them and the clients how much emphasis was put on methane versus the other traits.
Measuring methane in cattle was a lot harder as they were bigger, Peacock said.
“You can’t measure them until they are weaned and have a properly formed and functioning rumen.
“There is a lot of talk and thinking on how beef cattle can be measured but nothing is commercially available yet. For breeding values to be
calculated, there has to be consistent protocols around how the data is collected so that it is comparable,” Peacock said.
Last month B+LNZ welcomed an investment by the Government in a low-methane sheep genetics project to give more farmers access to animals to help reduce the production of methane from their farms.
The $4.2 million low methane sheep programme would use genetic selection to speed up the mix of low methane sheep among commercial farmers and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the New Zealand flock.
How to reduce nitrogen loss
Environment Canterbury (ECan) is suggesting some practices farmers can adopt to reduce nitrogen loss.
Canterbury’s surface water is connected to groundwater, so what farmers do on the land affects water quality. Nutrients and contaminants like nitrogen can take years to move into groundwater and this ‘lag effect’ means that farmers must make changes today
Science director Tim Davie said managing nitrogen loss was a crucial tool to reduce the impact on land and waterways.
“There is no doubt farmers need to reduce their nitrogen losses to achieve the environmental outcomes that our community wants,” Davie said.
“Finding new ways to reduce nitrogen loss from farms is an important focus for Canterbury farmers, especially in areas like Selwyn Waihora, which became subject to new nitrogen loss targets from January 2022.
“For several years we’ve been working on innovations that deliver nitrogen loss reductions, and we are now able to provide more heads up to farmers,” Davie said.
In 2021, ECan commissioned a project that considered four nitrogen loss mitigations as having a ‘four-star’ rating based on effectiveness and practicality:
■ Planting plantain in pasture.
■ Planting catch crops following winter grazing on forage crops.
■ Carrying out soil nitrogen testing.
■ Practicsng irrigation scheduling to maximise rainfall capture.
Each of these had been given the thumbs up by industry leaders and was recognised by ECan and Farm Environment Plan (FEP) auditors as able to help with farmers’ nitrogen loss programmes.
Leader of the DairyNZ-led Plantain Potency and Practice Programme Kate Fransen said modelling showed a dairy farm with 30 per cent of a plantain cultivar could reduce nitrogen leaching by between 7.5 and 25 per cent.
Plant and Food Researcher Brendon Malcolm also found catch crops could reduce nitrogen losses following winter forage crop grazing, and the sooner catch crops were in the ground, the better their effect, and the higher their yield potential.
Mike Beare from Plant and Food Research said that adopting the new guidelines for soil nitrogen testing could help farmers forecast how much nitrogen would be supplied by the soil and estimate how much additional fertiliser might be needed.
Irrigation New Zealand’s Stephen McNally said that irrigation in the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn should only be taking place when there was enough soil moisture deficit, and the decision to irrigate was supported by weather forecasts and data from soil moisture sensors.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): It’s not too much to ask for a bit of glamour out of life, your experiences, your environment. Although, in all likelihood, today you’ll end up creating it some way on your own.
TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Thoughts don’t drive the car. You’ll go where your body takes you. So how can you get your body to do the things your mind thinks are a good idea? Seek new techniques for wrangling your inner animal.
GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): If every human belief system is flawed, then it’s a waste of time to look for the one that isn’t. Find a good-enough fit, with ideas you can stand behind, and do the most good you possibly can from that place.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): People have a relationship with themselves like they do with others.
Acceptance is the main work in both cases. If you are having trouble accepting yourself, try accepting someone else – and vice versa.
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll go far with your project on this day, when your energy is steady and your focus is consistent. There will also be brief bursts of intense emotion to help you go at your purpose harder with brilliant results.
VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You don’t have to put your hands on anything to change it now. You can count on things to obey their nature to good effect. Like the moon, you will influence from afar just by making your regular rounds.
LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): People know you’re fair, but right now, you’re hoping you won’t have to be the judge. You’re powerful now, so even your most innocuous opinions could have unintended influence.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): If you feel distant from a person, you are less likely to care about whether or not your actions please them. Is it a consolation to you that it’s your closeness that makes you care?
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You’ll take a look around and realise that this isn’t quite what you had planned. On the other hand, some of it is much better. And of much of the rest, it could be said, “This is the good life.”
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ve been going at it too fast. Take it down 10 notches in the manner of someone walking onto the scene in that slow-motion effect that always makes people look so cool in the movies.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Whether driving, playing video games or navigating a fun night, you try not to grip the controls too hard, as it would limit your range and lengthen your response time. Stay flexible and ready.
PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Patterns establish. Experience is the best teacher in this regard. Most wouldn’t know how to get ahead of it, but you see options that allow you to figure out how you want it to go before it even starts.

Who’s the greatest; Messi, Maradona?
Daryl Holdenvery best, a legend and icon, who had his battles with drugs and alcohol and who died aged 60 in 2020.
Well, there’s certainly a strong case to call him that after the diminutive Messi inspired Argentina to its third World Cup title by beating France 4-2 in penalty shootout yesterday after the teams could not be separated at 3-all after extra time.
The 35-year-old Messi, nearing the end of his outstanding career, lifted in his final attempt at winning the World Cup by scoring two goals in a final that must rank with the tournament’s best in its 92-year history.
Winning his first World Cup completed Messi’s once-in-a-generation career, confirming his place in the pantheon of the game’s greats. He’ll rightly sit alongside Brazil’s Pele
– a record three-time World Cup champion – and Diego Maradona, the late Argentinian great, who drove his country to the 1996 win and with whom Messi was so regularly and naturally compared.
But does yesterday’s thrilling triumph, and an outstanding allround tournament performance, make Messi the greatest? Well, there can never be a definitive answer to that because comparing players of different eras in any sport is a fraught exercise.
In Argentina, most fans have always rated Maradona as the
Footballing experts will have their own views and they’ll be difficult to counter but for sheer skill I revert to a lovely Maradona story recounted many, many years ago by former England striker Gary Lineker. He was part of the England team beaten 2-1 by Maradona’s Argentina in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals. A year after the World Cup, he played alongside Maradona in a centenary game in London where Lineker said all the great players who played that day were totally in awe of Maradona.
Lineker was reported as saying that the first thing Maradona did that had everyone amazed was when the Argentinian was in the
dressing room before the game started. Sitting there in a pair of shorts, Maradona started juggling his rolled-up socks on his left foot for about five minutes.
Then he went out on the pitch and did something incredible, according to Lineker, who told the BBC that it “was one of the most unbelievable things I have even seen on a football pitch’’.
So what did Maradona do? Over to you Lineker.
“He juggled the ball all the way out to the centre circle. But when he got there, still juggling, he went ‘bang’ and kicked the ball up as high as he could, then waited,’’ Lineker told the reporter.
“It came down, then he went ‘bang’ and did it again.’’
Maradona did this without letting the ball bounce, striking the ball on the full, sending it
as high as you could into the heavens.
“He did it 13 times and the most he ever did was walk three paces to it (the ball to stop it hitting the ground).
“All of us were sitting there saying: ‘that is impossible’.’’
Now, understand that Lineker himself was one of the best players on the planet at that stage. He and his centenary game club teammates remembered getting back to training at Barcelona a few days later where they all tried to emulate Maradona’s feat.
“The best anyone did was three and they were all running to get the third one,’’ Lineker said.
Sound easy? Perhaps but give it a go over the Christmas break and let me know how you got on. The Maradona challenge is on.
So, is he the greatest of all time? Is Lionel Messi the best footballer the planet has seen?

Locals warm up for busy racing period
it’s been nothing like that with Jimmyray for Morrison and the horse’s owner, Trevor Cleave.
A rising six-year-old, the son of American Ideal has spent a lot of time in the paddock for various issues, but showed the wait had been worth it with a very good victory fresh-up for the first time in a year.
“There’s been a lot of work go into this horse,” Morrison said.
Emotions will understandably be high, but there’s work to be done and so the racing industry will get on with it tomorrow when racing returns to the Ashburton turf.
But before they even think about jumping on the back of a horse and racing, they’ll stop and pause for a minute to remember and honour their fallen friend, Megan Taylor.
A minute’s silence will be held in the birdcage prior to the start of the meeting – a chance for Taylor’s fellow jockeys, trainers, owners, horse attendants and race day officials to pay their respects.
It’s a somewhat cruel twist of fate to have two race meetings at Ashburton in such close proximity to each other.
life will return again and get out on the track and continue to do what they do best.
“It’s going to be a hard day,” leading South Island jockey, Jason Laking said last week.
“But I know for me personally, the one thing I want to do is just get back out there, it’s the best way to deal with it for me.
“I know it won’t be that way for some of the others though.”
Laking is set to be a busy man on his home track tomorrow afternoon, with a big book of rides and some very good each way chances.
His day should start early with a strong hope in Authority for Brian Court in the second race of the day. He was involved in the tragic accident last week when looking to get wound up and fought strongly to finish fourth.
Mid Canterbury harness stables showed they are on the right track for a busy period of racing ahead, with good success over the weekend’s racing action.
With the West Coast and Central Otago circuits only a week or two away and a plethora of racing more locally in Canterbury, there’s a lot to sink the teeth into, and the signs are looking good.
The weekend’s action kicked off at Addington on Friday night with two locally trained winners saluting.
Patrick O’Reilly combined with his niece, Sarah to win the junior drivers’ event with the ever-consistent Sonoma Tyron, and then John Morrison unleashed a promising pacer in Jimmyray in the very next race.
Sonoma Tyron is raced by brothers Alan and Ian Neumann and now has five wins next to her name, after a clever drive from Sarah found her in the right spot to unleash late and grab victory.
It was one of two winning drives for New Zealand’s leading junior driver as she combined with her former bosses, Cran and Chrissie Dalgety to win later in the programme with Invitation Only to bring up her 68th winner for the season in the sulky.
While it’s been rapid success for Sarah this year,
“But I’ve always quite liked him, and I think he’ll do a very good job; he’s only going to get better.”
Jimmyray will join a number of Morrison’s other horses when they trek down to Central Otago next week for the annual summer circuit, which takes in racing action from Cromwell, Roxburgh and Omakau early in the new year.
Also down there will be Lawrence McCormick, who produced an inch-perfect drive to get Missmollygoodgolly home in the last of the day at Rangiora on Sunday.
Back buried on the fence turning for home, McCormick found clear air with the Raewyn Lowtrained pacer to burst through and win by a narrow margin.
“There was a gap there, and we were just skinny enough to take it,” McCormick said.
“She’s a pretty under-rated horse when she gets the right kind of trip, and Raewyn has done a good job with her, her horses always look fantastic.”
While he won’t have Missmollygoodgolly to drive down south, McCormick will have a team of three of his own runners, including the promising Vertigo, at Central.
Traditionally a gap of at least a fortnight would go between meetings, but at this time of the year it’s negated, needing two meetings in six days at the venue.
And so, almost all of those jockeys who were on course last Thursday when Taylor lost her
Other hopes for Laking during the day include The Arctic Blast, Street Fightin Man and also Show Bazz, who looks a really big hope late in the day from a good draw.
Local trainers, Sarah and Matt Smith, also have a strong hand in the day’s meeting with a number of chances including Dayzee Dior, Lit’l Rock and also stayer, Vermont who all look strong each way hopes during the day.

Argentina on top of the world
RNZ
Argentina claimed the World Cup after beating defending champions France 4-2 on penalties, following a dramatic 3-3 draw after extra time in Doha.
Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez saved Kingsley Coman’s penalty and Aurelien Tchouameni fired wide to give Argentina their first world title since 1986, and third overall.
France had come from two goals down to level over 90 minutes with Kylian Mbappe netting twice in two minutes, including an 80th-minute penalty.
The France striker completed his hattrick in the 118th minute with another spot-kick after Argentina’s Lionel Messi had tapped in for a 3-2 lead in the 109th.
Argentina had gone 2-0 up in the first half with Messi making a record-breaking 26th World Cup appearance, converting a 23rd-minute penalty.
Matt MarkhamSmall in stature, but mighty in skill.
That’s the Ashburton MSA Petanque Club which is this week celebrating having three of its members selected in the New Zealand Petanque side.
Adelys and Lani Taraunu, along with Stephen Fitzgerald, were this week announced as team members to wear the Silver Fern when New Zealand takes on Australia in March of next year at Herne Bay in Auckland.
The club actually had six members in line for selection, but only three made the final cut for the international – but either way it is still a remarkable

It comes off the back of a huge year for the small club, which has put real emphasis into recruiting and bringing along new players and the arrival of the Taraunus from up north to the region has played a vital role in that.
Regarded among their peers across the country, the duo have been influential in helping to advance the game of local players since they shifted to Ashburton earlier in the year.
Fitzgerald is based in Christchurch, but plays out of the Ashburton club.
The club has finished operating for the 2022 calendar year, but is already planning a return to the terrains on January 10 next year where they will play each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at their venue on Racecourse Road, with preparations for each day beginning at 1pm.
They struck again with a sublime fourpass counter-attack as Alexis MacAllister’s cutback found Angel Di Maria, and he finished well.
Thousands of Argentina fans in blue and white outnumbered the handful of French supporters, creating an electric atmosphere and effectively converting the Lusail Stadium into a home game for Lionel Scaloni’s side.
Messi, 35, became the first man in World Cup history to score goals in the group stage, Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
Messi was named player of the tournament, while Mbappe won the golden boot with eight goals to Messi’s seven.
Argentina have now won six of their seven World Cup shootouts, including the quarter-final against the Netherlands a week ago when they also blew a 2-0 lead, while France have lost three of five, but with two of those defeats coming in finals.
It meant Messi finally claimed the trophy at his fifth world cup, lifting him up alongside Diego Maradona, the country’s first football God who carried them to their emotional second triumph in 1986 following their first in 1978.
It seems all the more incredible coming a month after his team began the tournament by suffering statistically the biggest upset in World Cup history when they were beaten by Saudi Arabia.
“I wanted to close my career with this, it was the one that was missing so I can no longer ask for anything else,” said Messi, who has played 172 times for his country.
“I was able to get the Copa America and now the World Cup that I had fought so hard for. I’ve got it at the end of my career. But I love football and I want to continue living a few more games being world champion.
“I cannot believe that we have suffered so much in a perfect game. Unbelievable, but this team responds to everything,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said.
“I am proud of the work they did. With the blows we received today.
“I want to tell people to enjoy, it’s a historic moment for our country.”

Mid Canterbury return from Southland without points
Canterbury the only team to register an outright victory thus far.
Southland won the toss on Saturday morning and asked their visitors to swing the willow.
Mid Canterbury will head into the Christmas break in this season’s Hawke Cup needing to completely reset before they return in 2023, after a fruitless sojourn into Southland on the weekend.
The senior cricket side returned home from Invercargill yesterday with no points to show for their drawn match against Southland at Queen’s Park over Saturday and Sunday – the only saving grace being the drawn match between North Otago and Otago Country meaning not much has changed on the overall standings.
Everyone is on the board in this year’s competition, and no-one has picked up two wins in the opening two rounds, with South
The early loss of Sam Clark and then Angus Jemmett put the Mid Canterbury side on shaky ground, before it became even more unstable when Devon Flannery and Ryan Bell were gone as well within the first 10 overs.
Des Kruger offered some resistance – batting for 58 deliveries and scoring 46 to keep the scoreboard ticking over, but when he fell in the 21st over Mid Canterbury were still sitting perilously at 79-5.
Matt Tait (34) and Satwant Singh (28) steadied things considerably though, adding 64 for the sixth-wicket to push the innings forward. Tait’s departure brought Will Southby to the middle, and he played a vital role as he scored 52 runs.
That in large was helped by
tail-ender Harry Jones, who batted for 74 deliveries for his 14 not out. He and Southby added 53 in a stoic ninth wicket stand, before Mid Canterbury were all out for 239.
With a total to defend and the chance of first innings points, Mid Canterbury settled into their work with the ball nicely.
Devon Flannery removed one of the Southland openers in the second over of the match and then Harry McMillan grabbed the other to have the hosts at 17-2 early doors.
A third wicket, to Singh, had the green and golds in the box seat, but a determined fourth-wicket stand of 126 changed the course of the match.
Southland went from being in trouble to just needing to keep their heads down and bat to grab those first innings points.
The big partnership was backed up with a 51-run stand for the fifth wicket as Southland posted 317 by Sunday afternoon before they were all out.
McMillan and Flannery bowled 34 overs between them, taking three wickets each while young Lachie Jemmett continued his incredible rise up the ranks with two wickets of his own.
With a result unlikely, Mid Canterbury walked back out into the middle and went about scoring some runs, with Flannery again to the fore with 51 not-out along-

Tweedy Cup terror for Mid Canterbury sides
overs while both Mana Singh and Kuljit Deol grabbed a brace each.
A tough weekend out in the middle for Mid Canterbury senior cricket sides was exacerbated by double defeat for the two local sides competing in South Canterbury’s Tweedy Cup.
Both Allenton and the Tech Stags fell to heavy defeats on Saturday in the final round of the year, with each side impacted by the absence of their representative players who were in Invercargill with the Hawke Cup team.
Allenton trekked to Timaru to take on the table-topping Celtic senior side, who are yet to taste defeat this season.
Bowling first after winning the toss, their rivals scored good runs up the top of the order as they worked through to 278, before they were all out in the 46th over.
Manish Rawat, who has been in good form for the team in recent weeks, was the chief destroyer, taking 3-37 from his 9.2
Given their woes with the bat this season, the big total was always going to be a tall order for the Allenton side, but they actually started with good intent with a 34-run opening stand.
But that would be almost it, unfortunately.
Five ducks feature in their innings as they were rolled for 73 inside 25 overs, with Rawat again providing the best resistance with 24 batting at four in the line-up.
Openers, Vikram Pelmahale (22) and Angrej Singh (15) were the only other batsmen to make it into double-figures.
In Ashburton, the Stags hosted Temuka on the domain, and did so without a number of their key figures who were wearing the green and gold down south.
Despite their absence, the defending champions still put together a strong XI for the match and would have fancied their chances.
The visitors won the toss and decided to bat, and may have been wondering about the decision when Alex Veint had the top
three of their batting order back in the shed quickly and the score at 15-3.
A revival in the middle order changed that though, as the Temuka players put their heads down and scored runs, working through to a scoreline that would have made Richie Benaud proud of 222.
Veint had a big innings out in the middle, finishing with 5-31 from his 8.3 overs, and he also claimed a run-out and took a catch.
Getting runs on the board early was always going to be key for the Stags if they were to chase down the decent target, and while a strong start unfolded, they were chasing for most of the innings.
Will McKee scored an important 38 at the top but other than a 30 from Tom Bell, everyone else either got starts and couldn’t push on or were removed cheaply as the Stags dipped and were all out for 153.
The competition now takes a break and returns again on January 14 – another date clash in which both sides will have to contend with
