Hunter Jayke takes top prize
Jayke Duncan – take a Christmas scavenger hunt bow.
The Methven eight-year-old is probably still grinning from ear-toear like the proverbial Cheshire moggy after walking away with a massive first prize win in the scavenger hunt organised by Ashburton law firm, Tavendale and Partners (TP).
The hunt, supported by 20 Ashburton CBD retailers who generously donated $1500 of prizes, involved participants answering Christmas-themed clues connected to each of the competing businesses.
And it was Jayke Duncan, who won the big one from about 200 entries.
The only challenge he had was collecting his near back-breaking firstplace hamper, containing $800 of prizes, his prize booty being almost too big for him to hold as he posed for a celebration photo.
Brothers Ryder and Brax Mills also picked up one of the three prize hampers, as did Austin Galletly.
All in all, the scavenger hunt was a massive success, according to TP’s senior associate Katrina Palmer.
“Thank you to all those who took part and got out there to support our local retailers and have a fun time while getting some Christmas shopping in,’’ Palmer said.
There was also a serious side to the scavenger hunt because one of the reasons why local firm TP set it up was to show support for Ashburton retailers.
They’ve had to try and make ends meet in a forever demanding Covid-19 world, with dire labour shortages, a cost-of-living crisis and an under-pressure goods’ supply chain that was still making product availability a nightmare.
Palmer said TP wanted to provide a boost for Ashburton businesses.
“We wanted to support them, but also just celebrate our great wee town.’’

Emissions
It has released its response to the more than 23,000 submissions to its plan, though final decisions will not be made until next year.
“After listening to farmers and growers through our recent consultation, and engaging over recent months with industry leaders, today we have taken the next steps in establishing a proposed farm-level emissions reduction system as an alternative to the ETS backstop,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.
Agriculture Minister Damien O’ Connor said the government understood the need for greater certainty for farmers and growers in their business planning.
“We have committed to a five-year price pathway for levy rates from 2025, giving farmers the price certainty they have asked for out to 2030,” he said.
The plan is similar to its initial proposal, with emissions counted at the individual farm level, and biogenic methane from animals and nitrous oxide from fertiliser priced separately.
Carbon dioxide from things like vehicles is not part of the pricing system.
changed
can be used to offset emissions.
The farming industry and Māori will be allowed to give input on setting the price of the levy.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said overseas customers want low-emissions products and without a credible plan to cut dangerous gases the future of New Zealand exports were at stake.
Ardern told media she always felt government and the industry had the same goals in mind, “that is to be the most sustainable food producers in the world”.
Initially, the government wanted to exclude scattered stands of trees and shelter belts, but there was pushback from farmers who objected to being charged for emissions without being recognised for the full range of sequestration efforts.
Last month the government announced it was having another look at the strategy, and later said it was working on a process to recognise stands of trees that can be quantified in a “scientifically robust” way.
However, a crucial difference is that instead of using the rising price of carbon to drive behavioural change, as the Climate Change Commission suggested, the gov-
ernment is now going to set the levy price as low as possible.
It will also increase what types of trees and vegetation on New Zealand farms
At a minimum it means that from 2025 management of indigenous vegetation and riparian margin planting done since 2008 will be eligible for offsets.
Initially the system will be managed in the pricing scheme, farmers will fill out a declaration about their eligible land at the same time as they report emissions data.
Payments would be available for the uptake of incentives and eligible sequestration.
Management of the system would transition to the ETS as soon as possible.
This ultimately means the trees and vegetation must be recognised by international methods of accounting for tree planting which counts towards New Zealand’s targets and emissions budgets, but for now that higher standard would not be required.
The report said the ETS was the most appropriate mechanism to reward all forms of eligible sequestration from vegetation. Having one system that recognises sequestration for all landowners in Aotearoa is a coherent, efficient and equitable approach.
The government is proposing to reform the Emissions Trading Scheme (NZ ETS) to encourage interested parties to invest in science and research, to include further categories in New Zealand’s emissions inventory and the emissions trading scheme.

World record –for two days
A Taihape teenager’s shearing world record has already been beaten, just 48 hours after it was set.
Nineteen-year-old Reuben Alabaster got the title for the highest number of strong wool lambs shorn over eight hours on December 20.
He is also the youngest to shear the world record.
But, just two days later, Te Kuiti’s Jack Fagan broke the same record.
At Puketiti Station in the Waitomo District, a packed shed watched on as Fagan tirelessly shore 754 lambs over eight hours – eight more than Alabaster.
Clay Wilson, who watched the event, said Fagan was already ahead of his rival by six before the final round.
“He’s managed to finish really strongly.
“Watching it there, [he] was just really cracking on in those last 10 minutes and big cheers from the crowd.
“It works out to about 95 lambs every hour, and one shorn every 37 or 38 seconds.
“He did his 754, and the buzzer went and he did one more just for good measure.”
Watching with the crowd was his dad, Sir David Fagan, who is a 16-time Golden Shears New Zealand Champion and held 10 world records.
“Also [it is] 30 years to the day when his dad broke the nine-hour record in Southland in 1992, so a bit of a nice symmetry there for this new world record for Jack Fagan,” Wilson said.

Farmers are being urged to ensure their hay is completely dry before it’s baled and stored over the holiday period.
Fire and Emergency national wildfire manager Tim Mitchell said some farms have had a very wet few weeks and conditions were not great for hay baling.
He said hay must be completely dry before its baled, stacked and stored for use as winter feed.
“There’s little bacteria that live or are within that grass or on that straw and if that moisture is still there when it gets baled, they continue to work, and during that process that builds up heat within the hay bale itself.
“If that heat can’t escape – which obviously if it’s compressed into a bale it’s really difficult – and then if you stack all those bales together it makes it even harder.
“What can happen is that the heat can build up to a point where it reaches ignition temperature and then it spontaneously combusts.
“Then not only do you lose the hay but, depending on where you’ve stored it, you could lose the hay, you could lose the hay barn, the shelter belt, the other things around it as well.”
Mitchell said every year Fire and Emergency was called out to fires started by hay bales which spontaneously combusted.
He said most hay bale fires started
between two and seven weeks after storage and farmers should be checking their bales during that time.
“Use a steel rod to check the hay is not overheating,” he said.
“Hay should be stacked loosely to improve airflow and keep the bales cool.
“Ideally store them away from things that could feed a fire after it starts –such as sheds, hedges and trees.”
Mitchell said there were also warning signs to keep an eye out for if hay is stored in a shed, such as steam condensation on the roof, mould growth on or inside bales, and acrid fumes or hot humid air at the top of the stack.
“It’s better not to get to that point,” he said.
“If everyone takes the extra time to dry the hay out properly, hopefully we’ll see far fewer haystack fires this summer.”
Mitchell urged farmers to avoid the pressure to get everything done before Christmas if the conditions were not right.
“I know it’s tempting at this time of year – we all want to get things squared away before Christmas,” he said.
“This can put pressure on people to get the work done quickly and miss some crucial steps.
“But getting bales into the shed before they’re completely dry is a recipe for all the bales going up in flames.”

Christmas wishes do (partly) come true
I
t was just a brief comment, but it meant so much and for so many reasons.
It came from Ashburton District Council deputy mayor Liz McMillan, who announced on her Facebook page her pleasure about the completion of what was an obvious and much needed Methven walkway to keep people safe.
But McMillan wasn’t just pleased for herself. Her delight was also on behalf of long-time Methven and district council political colleague and friend Rodger Letham, who died this month.
“We were told that the new shingle path going from Racecourse Avenue, up past the (Ōpuke Thermal) hot pools to the walkway would be in by Christmas. And it was!
“This was something that Rodger and I advocated for and it’s so good to see so many people
Daryl Holdenusing it,’’ McMillan said of a project they had been promoting for over a year.
McMillan’s delight is understandable because it means Methven residents now have safer access to key amenities in the northern corner of the township. So that’s part one of the project with a big tick.
Part two would follow when they make that stretch of road even safer by reducing the speed limit. Both the Methven Community Board and the council want that to happen, having suggested the speed be dropped to 50kph from Racecourse Road to the Methven walkway. Right now, it’s
at a still dangerous 100kph. The generally ice age-manoeuvring decision makers at the Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency have recognised the concern and have proposed reducing the speed limit from 100kph to 80kph.
Let’s just call that a good start, but it’s clearly not enough.
And one more thing . . .
It should be obvious, but in this day and age, where anything and everything seemingly goes, perhaps my advisory message that follows is not such a given.
So, in a tongue-in-cheek community service kind of way, please let me remind everyone
their car break down in the car park. The man told his wife to carry on with the shopping while he fixed the car.
The wife returned later to see a small group of people near the car. On closer inspection, she saw a pair of hairy legs protruding from under the chassis.
Although the man was in his shorts, his lack of underpants turned his private parts into glaringly public ones. Unable to stand the embarrassment, the wife dutifully stepped forward and quickly put her hand up his shorts and tucked everything back into place. “That’s better,’’ she thought to herself.
Rest assured, McMillan, with the presence of Letham always in her thoughts, will do whatever it takes to make them see light. It won’t be easy but it’s surprising what persistence and a commonsense approach can result in.

Crockery carrier will attempt to hold last of china (4)
They don't forget to help as net is thrown for them (9)
Where Venetian bathers have cover and nothing more (4)
ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): As empathic as you may be, your life can only be experienced from your own perspective. Even though you know you are not the centre of the universe, it's your responsibility to care for yourself as though you were.
TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Over 2,000 years ago, Socrates, who is regarded among the all-time great thinkers, said, "I know only one thing: that I know nothing." You may feel woefully uniformed today, but you will be in mighty fine company.
GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): This is not the kind of game you can win once and be a champion of forever. This is the kind of game in which you are judged by your last play and the one before that matters a lot less. Persist and try to better yourself.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You don't always realise when you are setting up a pattern that will repeat hundreds of times, but it's what is happening now. This can be a good thing if you make the action something you'd love to see repeated.
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Just because an opinion is unpopular doesn't mean it's incorrect. What if you're the only one who perceives the truth of the situation? Voice what you see, as you might just break the spell of a collective delusion.
VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Try to take a picture of the moon or a sunset and you'll realise life is better than the picture it. When filters and tricks are applied, things get interesting, and yet nothing compares to the flawed and sprawling reality.
LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You think ahead because imagining the future helps you avoid feeling purposeless. You want to know why you should show up before you do. Knowing the stakes in a situation will help you relax and play your best.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You'll accept the truth of a situation when you hear it, but you won't accept the first thing you hear as the truth. You'll go digging and digging until you get to the answer that resonates.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There are two ways to solve the problem: the simple way and the hard way. When you're relaxed, the simple way is easier to see and apply. In a nonrelaxed state, you'll notice only the hard way.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You're willing to bring your whole self to the scene and process your experience with a wide range of feeling. It's like you're emoting for the stoic types who feel they must, for whatever reason, hold back.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your expectations may conflict with reality, but not because you're unreasonable. It's likely many people don't do what they say they'll do. Don't lower your standards just because they go unmet.
PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Though you genuinely want to help, you do not yet understand enough about the situation to properly assist. Observe to find the questions you ask to get a comprehensive understanding of what's really going on.

Locals shine in pre-Christmas rush
Legendary horseman passes away
Revered thoroughbred trainer Colin Jillings passed away in Auckland last week, aged 91.
Jillings, who retired from training in 2005, had a lengthy and hugely successful career in racing, initially as a jockey and then as a trainer.
He never trained on a large scale, which made winning a premiership an unrealistic target, but from the outset displayed a rare ability to successfully target big races.
Three races into the Ashburton Trotting Club’s Christmas meeting last week and the locals were making a play for total domination.
Races one, two and three for the day had local connections in the winners’ circle, including a double to local driving legend Ricky May.
He kicked off the day by producing one of his trademark perfectly timed runs to get the Darryn Simpson-trained Fearless home by the barest of margins.
But May’s spot in the sulky wasn’t the only local aspect of the win.
Fearless is a son of the former Patrick O’Reilly-trained mare Never Fear, who was bred and raced by Michelle Baird, who also bred Fearless.
May was back in the action two races later, combining with good friend Laurence Hanrahan to win with maiden pacer Kalasa.
Quick away from the stand, the pair found the front and never looked back, clearing out for a comfortable win.
“I told Ricky not to be unlucky, and if he managed to get away quick enough to look to roll them along and be out in front and out of trouble, and it worked out well,” Hanrahan said.
Kalasa is owned by locals Margaret and Craig Ingold, and with win number one out of the way it won’t be long before win number two comes as well.
In between the May double, local trainers Brent and Tim White ended a huge run of frustration with the very talented Lone Wolf, who finally put it all together and produced a big run to win in the hands of Sarah O’Reilly.
The talented young horsewoman then kept her form up the following night at Addington, when she made it back-to-back wins with Invitation Only for Cran and Chrissie Dalgety.
Styxie for Trent Yesberg, and then managed to get his own runner Bettor Be Sharp home later in the night.
In between the May double, local trainers Brent and Tim White ended a huge run of frustration with the very talented Lone Wolf, who finally put it all together and produced a big run to win in the hands of Sarah O’Reilly.
John Morrison kicked off what will be a busy time of racing with two winners across the Ashburton and Addington meets – taking the honours in the last race on both occasions
He won the last event at Ashburton with Coachella for trainer Ken Barron, and then the last at Addington for Ken’s brother Tony with talented mare Life’s A Beach.
His ability to set a horse for a feature race and get it to the target in peak form and at the right weight – a key skill during the period when the richest races were mostly handicaps – was almost unmatched.
Underpinning his success was a strong work ethic and keen attention to detail, together with a genuine affection for horses. He believed that “every horse is an individual” and should be fed and worked accordingly.
Jillings was riding trackwork at Ellerslie as a 10-year-old and had his first race ride at 12. A fractured skull, suffered in a trackwork fall, sidelined him for 11 months but he still recorded his first win as a 13-year-old, when a pupil at St Peters College.
He was always going to get too big to remain a jockey for long but was the leading northern apprentice in the 1945-46 season and won the Railway at Ellerslie and finished third in an Auckland Cup before his riding career ended.
He later mentored many capable riders, among them Bob Vance, Mark Sweeney and Sam Spratt.
Jillings spent the bulk of his training career at Takanini and won more than 1300 races as a trainer in New Zealand.
His star performers included Uncle Remus, Stipulate, McGinty, Yeman, Sharivari, Tycoon Lil, Sedecrem and top jumper Brockton.
More than half of those wins came when in partnership with Richard Yuill, who became a training partner in 1987.
Jillings was 25 when he trained the first of his four Auckland Cup winners and was particularly proud of his Derby record at Ellerslie.
He won the Great Northern Derby with Lawful and Stipulate, and the NZ Derby, which replaced the Great Northern Derby in 1973, with Uncle Remus, I’m Henry and The Phantom Chance.
The four Auckland Cup wins – with Yeman, Stipulate, Perhaps and Irish Chance – were spread over 43 years, and there were victories in the New Zealand and Wellington Cups.
But it was O’Reilly’s father Gerard who was the star of the night, with a driving double including a training victory as well.
He won early in the night with Icee
A three-year-old by Bettor’s Delight, Bettor Be Sharp has become a model of consistency on the track, winning twice in 14 starts as well as picking up seven placings.
As well as the O’Reilly successes,
Morrison is likely to be a prominent figure on the Central Otago harness circuit which kicks into gear in the coming days, as well as trekking back to Canterbury for the popular meeting at Motukarara on Thursday.
Jillings did not take a lot of horses to Australia but one of the high points of his career came in Melbourne, when he won the 1993 Cox Plate with The Phantom Chance. McGinty (3) and Tycoon Lil were also Group One winners across the Tasman.
Jillings deserved a Cox Plate win. He had been unable to spare the time to accompany Yeman on a spring campaign in Australia in 1958 and the horse won the Cox Plate for Larry Wiggins.
A team with no name
It’s the rugby team with no name, or names, but we want to correct that.
Robin Meaclem contacted the Ashburton Guardian last week with this image that was located while clearing out a family member’s home recently.
The image comes with very little information, and Meaclem would like to try and learn as much about the photo as is possible.
“We have no knowledge of the photo or the players,” he said.
“We wish to know who the players are and their history – whatever happened to these guys.”
The image was taken in 1905 with the club name, H.F.C. engraved on the ball.
What leads to the belief that it is of an Ashburton-based rugby side is that the card around the image has Halma’s Studio Ashburton marked on it.
Meaclem contacted the New Zealand Rugby Museum to see if they were able to help with the quest.
They confirmed that in 1905 there were three clubs that began with the letter H – Hinds, Hampstead and Hakatere.
The Hakatere club, they were able to confirm through their records, was successful in winning a sub-union competition
around 1905 or 1906 leading to the understanding that the team pictured is most likely to have been of players from that club.
For no other reason than wanting to be able to understand the history of the image,
the club and the team the Meaclems are keen to try and get answers and we want to help find them.

Basketball – going from strength to strength
Maintaining and growing numbers in sport is becoming harder by the year.
People’s lives are much busier, their time much more valuable and with rising costs of everything else in day-to-day life there’s a lot that needs to be sacrificed.
And sadly, playing sport – particularly at the age group level, is one of the main sectors caught in the crossfire.
So, it’s surprisingly brilliant to see that basketball in Mid Canterbury is bucking the trend.
As another sporting year comes to an end there’s plenty to reflect on.
From victories at club level right through to international and national success Mid Canterbury has again produced the goods. Matt Markham works through 10 of his favourite story subjects in no particular order from 2022.
They’re growing exponentially, and there’s no sign of it stopping in the near future.
Popularity in the sport as a whole has risen in recent years. Young Kiwis are enamoured with what Steven Adams is doing in the NBA, but for parents the idea of taking your child to a sport that’s indoors, during the week and often at a decent hour is helping drive the rise too.
Basketball Mid Canterbury are onto a winner here, and for all the hard work, dedication and volunteer work that goes in across the region – they thoroughly deserve it.
We sang their praises a few weeks ago as their school age competitions for the year came to a close, and Basketball Mid Canterbury boss, Mark Douglas proudly told us of the fact they have welcomed more than 1000 players onto the courts around the district in the past 12 months – a significantly higher number than ever before.
With a real focus on introductions to the game, their programmes such as Girls Got Game and Hoops In Schools have opened the possibility of playing basketball to hundreds of school children around the district. And they’ve taken it up. Filling the courts during the week playing miniball and 3x3 basketball throughout the year.
The goal for 2023 is to see things grow even more, with another 20-30 per cent
increase in player numbers the target.
Lofty – but not inconceivable.
In one school this year which they ran programmes they grew the registered playing numbers within the school from 12 originally to more than 60 by the time the programme had finished.
But it’s not just the age group basketball that’s flourishing.
The popular men’s competition had another big year, with new names stepping
out onto the court to join those who have been there for years and the women’s competition also grew massively.
That led to a Mid Canterbury women’s basketball team being resurrected for the first time in no-one seems to know how long, and they went away and played tournament basketball late in the year.
For a long time, we’ve been known for producing good players and administrators.
There are national age group representatives out there and some current stars and rising stars of the future starting to make a big mark at senior levels.
It’s fast-making basketball in this district one of the most exciting and rapidly-expanding sports available and a true credit to all those behind the scenes who are making it happen.
