SHOP smart SHOP loca There’s many parts to Rosco’s Maddison Gourlay Rosco Auto Dismantlers has more to it than meets the eye, as part-owner Ben Fahey realised when he took over the business. Rosco’s, as it’s more widely known, dismantles vehicles and stocks new vehicle parts for most makes and models, specialising in Subaru, Hyundai and Nissan. It also has one of the biggest wrecking yards in the country. That was one of many things that surprised Fahey when he and his two brother-in-laws bought Rosco’s in 2018. “It’s a huge industry, which I didn’t realise how big it was until I came on board,” said Fahey, whose background was in the building industry. He returned home to Ashburton from Perth with wife Emily to have their first child when the Rosco’s opportunity emerged. “We usually purchase around 20 to 30 cars a week and they will be put into the yard and parts will be grabbed out of them until it’s no longer useful and then sent to the scrap man. “It is a well-oiled machine.” That machine was started by Ross Butterick in 1984 and moved to its current location 90 Robinson Street in the industrial estate near the Ashburton River in 1998. When Butterick was looking to retire, he sold it to Fahey and his two brother-inlaws. But with the brother-in-laws busy in their own work, it made sense that Fahey should take over day-to-day operations, and he’s thrilled he did. “I love it,” Fahey said. “When I came into the business, most of the staff had decades worth of experience already. “The staff really do make it.” Those staff members have a lot of var-

ied customer contact to handle, including a large number of foot traffic clients. Throw in local garages, sales for new and second-hand good quality tyres, and online selling via Trade Me, and the large mega parts database, which connects many second-hand car parts places in New Zealand together. “We might have a customer that needs a part and we don’t have it. We can look up if another wrecker has it and ring

them in the morning. We can often have it in the afternoon,” said Fahey, who remained grateful for the 30-plus years of hard work previous owner Butterick had put into the business and the community. “We have four couriers come each day. “We get a lot of support from other wreckers and the local garages. They are excellent. If they can get a part from here they will.’’ Fahey sees many locals throughout the

day and said that Ashburton knows how to shop local. That’s why he thinks the Ashburton Guardian’s shop local community boosting campaign was a winner. Though he wouldn’t say it, the campaign also recognised people like himself, who had taken a punt in a new business and had made a success of it. “You have to support local to keep businesses in the town,” he said.

Braided Rivers’ shop local unity ‘Guardian campaign is to be encouraged’ Malcolm Hopwood

The Braided Rivers Community Trust Ashburton and shop local talk the same language. The trust, reconstituted from the Ashburton Licensing Trust this year, has returned many millions of dollars to the community since it was established in 1949. CEO Rob Reid is proud it’s been Ashburton’s major funder for the past 70 years. And the secret? It is its community ownership, enabling a significant portion of its profits to be returned to Mid Canterbury organisations and people. “We’ve provided money to community, sports and cultural groups and individuals,” Reid said. He lists the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, EA Networks Sports Stadium, the tennis centre, domain hockey turf and the Oxford Street basketball stadium. “Over time, we’ve also provided facilities that Mid Canterbury wouldn’t have had otherwise.” In particular, that includes Hotel Ashburton and its function rooms, which attract a range of meetings, conferences, conventions, weddings, funerals and personal milestones in the lives of many local residents. And they all bring revenue to Ashburton and increase the economic benefits to the district. The trust has also owned the Devon, Speight’s Ale House, Braided Rivers Restaurant, The Somerset Grocer, Tinwald Tavern and Tinwald Motels, most of which have been on-sold or leased.

Braided Rivers Community Trust Ashburton chief executive officer Rob Reid: “The Guardian campaign is to be encouraged.” “These have happened because we saw the need in the community,” Reid said. “A lot of areas in New Zealand have never enjoyed the benefits that licensing trusts bring to a community.’’ While Braided Rivers had now moved out of hospitality, it retained a major property portfolio. “Renting commercial space in Ashburton is our most significant source of income and allows us to financially sup-

port local businesses and people,” Reid said. That was achieved by working in partnership with the Lion Foundation to ensure gaming machine money was distributed locally to benefit Mid Canterbury. Reid said future plans for the Braided Rivers Trust was to refine its investment and grants scheme so it could contribute more to Mid Canterbury and the economy.

That approach is one reason why Reid sees Braided Rivers as synonymous with the Ashburton Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local campaign. “The reason we’ve been so successful is that we support and have been supported by the community,” he said. “Shop local also encourages people to identify here and purchase goods and services from Ashburton businesses. “The Guardian campaign is to be encouraged.”

Dramatic increase in hospice client numbers Malcolm Hopwood

Hospice Mid Canterbury’s client numbers almost doubled during 2021. At the start of the year there were 60 people on their books, now client numbers have risen to 110. General manager, Debbie Mackle, attributes the increase to hospice “getting our message out to the community about how we can support them”. While the increase is a challenge, Mackle said hospice will keep building on what they can provide and enhance their access to those in the community with life-limiting conditions. “Hospice is free to them, their caregivers and their families,”

she said. Mackle is overwhelmed in receiving $15,000 in Community Trust Mid and South Canterbury’s December round of grants. “It’s absolutely fantastic. “We’re humbled by the support from the community trust,” she said. Over half a million was given to organisations in both Mid and South Canterbury. The other local recipient was the Staveley Hall Society which received $120,000 towards its Ice Rink Refrigeration Project. Mackle said hospice’s grant will go towards services and operational costs over the next 12 months. “Our services are therapeutic and educational, and activities include an exercise programme, art therapy, ‘catch-up cuppas’ and day games. “Everyone deserves support for their end-of-life journey,” she said.

Pool closures could put heat on Tinwald Jonathan Leask The Tinwald Pool could be overflowing this summer if the weather is hot. The EA Networks Centre will close its pools for three weeks in January for scheduled maintenance while the Hinds and Rakaia pools are also closed due to earthquake-prone changing rooms being demolished at both sites. The Tinwald pool will be open longer hours providing an alternative option in the Ashburton area. Ashburton District Council community services group manager,

Steve Fabish, said the pool closure at EA Networks Centre for maintenance work is normally scheduled during the summer months when other options are available. “Council has worked expeditiously to demolish the old changing rooms at both the Hinds and Rakaia pools to ensure they were ready for reopening this summer. “The demolishing works has been completed and signed off. “Health and safety requirements have also been reviewed, and feedback is back with the respective incorporated societies that manage each pool, to action and prepare for reopening sometime in January.” In the meantime he said the Tinwald pool hours have been extended, to 8am-8pm, during the EA Networks Centre pool shutdown to accommodate interested pool users.

Protests, parents and the phone call that changed her life

NEWS 5

– Dame Lynda Topp reflects NZ Herald Dear Lynda, It’s taken me 40-odd years to pen this letter, but I just wanted to let you know how proud of you I am. I know you spent a lot of your 20s fighting for things you believed in, and you made it so much easier for me and many other lesbian women in New Zealand to be accepted and proud to be gay. We also live in a nuclear-free country and I know that you and many other young people marched against American nuclear-powered warships entering our harbours. There was that historic moment in Hamilton when the All Blacks/Springboks test was called off due to anti-apartheid protesters on the field. I know that you and your twin sister were on the frontline with a dedicated bunch of committed protesters from the Patu Squad and, eventually, South Africa changed its ways and Nelson Mandala was freed. Then there was that time you and your sister lived out in the bush with no power. You had an old Holden station

Does wisdom really come with age? Six high achieving New Zealanders were asked to write a letter to their 25-year-old self. Methven-based entertainment legend Dame Lynda Topp was the first to do so. wagon, a couple of dogs and a guitar. You had no money and somehow ended up on Queen St busking to get enough money to buy some gas to get back home and you made enough money to buy a full tank of gas, some dog food, and a box of beer. After that night you busked in Queen St every Friday for a whole year till, finally, the crowd got so big you were arrested by the police and charged with obstructing the footpath. I know that you never thought that you would become entertainers, but a phone call to Mum and Dad changed your lives: “Hi Mum, it’s Lynda here. Jools and I would like to come home and take over the family farm.” It was what you had always wanted to do. It was Dad who replied. He must have taken the phone from Mum. I can still hear the reply today: “You girls go

and see the world. If you come back to the farm, you’ll be tied to it for the rest of your lives.” Looking back it was the greatest advice the old man ever gave you. The rest of your story, I suppose, is history. You stood up for the things you believed in, felt you could change the world, wrote songs to reflect those issues and guess what – you did help change New Zealand, and if you ever want to do it all again, I’ll be right there beside you. I’m happily married now. l live in the South Island, still have a couple of dogs, still singing, oh and I’m a Dame. Gotta go now, I’m off to plant some natives on a wetland I’m helping to restore. Love Lynda. PS: I’m 63 now – hope you’re proud of me, too.

The day a Fijian bowler claimed nine wickets for . . . 1 run

O

n top of the cricket world one week and down in the domestic doldrums the

next. That’s life for Black Caps’ hero Ajaz Patel, who was warmly welcomed back into the Central Districts fold against Auckland in a twenty20 game in Palmerston North yesterday. Left-arm spinner Patel, who became only the third player in test cricket history to take 10 wickets in an innings in New Zealand’s recent series loss to India, wasn’t selected to play Bangladesh in Mount Maunganui starting on Saturday. No surprise there, given our success at home with four quick bowlers, but it meant that if you

Daryl Holden want to watch our 10-wicket test hero play in New Zealand this summer then you might just have to head out to a Central Districts domestic match. Rest assured, Patel’s staggering test performance won’t ever be forgotten. In fact, it even resulted in Guardian reader and letter to the editor writer, Bruce Leighton, recalling an equally unbelievable bowling performance in a cricket competition final match he

played in Fiji many years ago. Bruce’s team, having finished at the top of the competition ladder, played the Fiji police in the final over two days. Apparently, Bruce wrote, that Fiji cricket was pretty good at that time. They were coached by an Englishman, who had played county cricket and their ability showed out when they toured New Zealand. But back to the final. Early on the second day, Bruce’s team needed to score 120 runs to win, with plenty of time to do so. Bruce then set the scene perfectly in his letter. “If you have ever been in the tropics on a day when it is threatening rain, you will know that

it almost feels as if the clouds are going come down on you, and the atmosphere is dense. I suppose, in other countries, they would not have played, but that was not the case in Fiji,’’ Bruce wrote. “Our innings started disastrously. Our opening batsman raised his bat above his shoulder, only to see the ball swing into him and was clean bowled first ball. “Number two suffered a similar fate. “Well, to cut a long story short, we were all out for three runs. Yes, only three runs. I contributed one third of this total. I played at one outside the off stump, missed it, and the wicketkeeper was so surprised

it missed the stumps (that) he missed it too and we ran a bye.’’ Bruce wrote that the bowling “destroyer’’ was a player by the name Wagabaca. “He was about 6 foot 6 and bowled just medium pace. But in the conditions on that day, he swung the ball a prodigious amount. His figures for the day: 9 wickets for 1 run. “Yes, I was top scorer with one run – not out. “I wonder if anyone can top that off?’’ We wonder, too, Bruce. If you can top that story, or have other weird and wonderful sporting yarns to share, then please get in touch. E:: daryl.h@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury’s 2021 sporting events in retrospect – April

Allenton’s Sandra Keith and Rachel Davies knocked over some strong combinations to win Bowls Canterbury’s Champion of Champion pairs title.

Club president Darion and husband KIeron Gray were leading the charge as Celtic organised their magnificent centennial year celebrations.

It was a tough opening month for the Mid Canterbury United side in Mainland Football, but they pushed some good sides close.

Mid Canterbury crowned a new golden girl with Hannah King’s success at the NZ Age Group Swimming champs in Wellington.

Some of the best shooters in the South Island converged on Mid Canterbury for the annual Target Shooting Mid Canterbury Championships.

They numbered large, and walked away with plenty of success – just another successful national championships for members of the Lake Hood Water Ski Club.

Food, fibre exports forecast to hit a record $50.8b Food and fibre export revenue is projected to surge to a record $50.8 billion in the year to June 30, 2022 – an increase of 6 per cent over the previous year. “This is the first time New Zealand’s annual food and fibre export revenue will crack $50 billion – a result we should all be very proud of, particularly as we navigate the challenges of Covid-19,” Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor said. “Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries (SOPI) forecasts healthy growth across the majority of our food and fibre exports, which shows that the future of the food and fibre sector is bright. “The performance reported in this latest SOPI is a testament to the sector’s huge efforts to keep the wheels of our national and local economies turning and supply essential products.” O’Connor said the sector was meeting strong demand as consumers around the world increasingly looked to healthier food and natural fibres with strong environmental credentials. “High demand for our dairy products combined with strong export prices are expected to deliver an estimated 10 per cent in-

Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor crease in dairy export revenue to $20.9 billion. “Meat export revenue is forecast to increase by 6 per cent to $11.1 billion, driven by recovering export prices and demand for our meat products that are helping to fill the global protein shortage.” O’Connor said horticulture export revenue was expected to increase as well.

“Consumers can’t get enough of our fresh fruit and wine with demand remaining strong. This is driving an expected increase in export revenue of 5 per cent to $6.9 billion,” O’Connor said. Forestry Minister Stuart Nash said the outlook for forestry exports was strong. seeing continued, “We’re strong demand for New Zealand logs from China and for sawn

timber from the United States. “Forestry exports are expected to reach $6.7 billion in the year to June 30, 2022, an increase of 3 percent on the previous year. This is only possible because of the resilience of our forestry businesses and their massive efforts to get back on track and tackle the challenges brought about by Covid-19,” Nash said. Oceans and Fisheries Minister David Parker said seafood exports were recovering from the challenges posed by Covid-19, such as the disruption to food service. “Seafood export revenue is forecast to rise 4 per cent to $1.9 billion in the year to June 30, 2022, as countries open up and food service resumes,” Parker said. “The growth forecast in this SOPI is promising, reflecting the seafood sector’s continuing success providing high-quality seafood to international markets.” O’Connor said the Government was backing projects and initiatives to drive more value, sustainability, and jobs in the food and fibre sector, to strengthen the foundations of New Zealand’s Covid-19 recovery. “Growing value, sustainability,

and jobs are central to our 10year food and fibre sector roadmap Fit for a Better World – Accelerating our Economic Potential,” O’Connor said. “We’re investing alongside the sector in innovative projects through our Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund and getting more Kiwis into jobs through like Opportunity initiatives Grows Here. “Reaching Agreement in Principle for the New Zealand – United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement in October will enable our exporters to compete on a level playing field in the UK market, and will open up valuable new opportunities for New Zealand exports.” O’Connor said it was important to acknowledge the hard work of rural New Zealand and to celebrate the performance and successes in the latest SOPI. “We’ve been very fortunate to have had an economy that’s kept ticking due to our health-focused Covid-19 response, which has been backed by New Zealanders. “Together we’ve kept ourselves safe so we can continue to do business, and this SOPI points to the benefit of these efforts,” O’Connor said.

Caution urged when baling hay this festive season Canterbury farmers are being asked to take all the correct steps when baling and storing hay, following a spate of shed and bale fires in the district. Over the last two weeks Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) has attended at least two fires relating to the baling of hay and its storage. “Due to the wet weather around Canterbury and other parts of the country, some land managers have been able to get three to four cuts of hay this spring/ summer,” FENZ group manager Al Hutt said.

“This can put pressure on them to get the work done quickly and miss some crucial steps, which has created the perfect storm in terms of fire risk with hay bales,” he said. “Hay bales contain moisture and sometimes that means they can self-combust. Hay bale fires can burn through farmland or the sheds the hay is stored in. “Then a fire that starts in a shed could spread to machinery stored there and to connecting buildings,” Hutt said. FENZ recommends land managers

take some important steps when baling hay and storing it. “It is important to provide air flow where possible. Allow the hay to breathe; Check bales using a moisture meter or a simple steel rod – if the rod is too hot to hold unstack the pile. “If the rod is very warm, regularly monitor your stack, and keep bales clear of other flammable objects like implement sheds, hedges and trees. “Rushing the job can easily cause costly and dangerous consequences,” Hutt said.

Animal ID compliance on the rise The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is warning against complacency as rates of compliance with the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) scheme continue to rise with compliance almost 90 per cent this year. The scheme, which maintains a national database of cattle and deer movements, is a critical part of New Zealand’s ability to

respond quickly to biosecurity threats, MPI national manager of animal welfare and NAIT compliance, Gray Harrison said. “We take non-compliance seriously because of the potentially devastating effect these threats can have on industry and communities. “Up to 2018, only about 60 per cent of tagged animals were being registered before first move-

ment. Since 2019, MPI and OSPRI, which maintains the NAIT database, have renewed efforts to improve compliance, and the compliance rate is up to 90 per cent this year. MPI prosecuted 18 people in charge of animals for failing to meet their obligations under the NAIT scheme in 2021. In addition, it issued 1782 in-

fringements, and 2372 written warnings. “It’s having the desired effect, but we can’t afford complacency. “Our message to people with animals which come under the NAIT scheme is that we all need to do our part to protect New Zealand. “For our part we will continue to keep a close eye on NAIT compliance.

Harrison said amendments to penalties in the NAIT Act, which increased the maximum penalty tenfold to $100,000 in late 2019, send a strong message – that people need to treat this scheme very seriously. “If you are unsure about what you need to do, please reach out. “There is plenty of information, advice and support available,” Harrison said.

Sporting year in review – The ABC of it all Matt Markham

J

unior drivers

As the curtain on 2021 starts to fall we take a look back through the months of sporting achievements, results and stories that shaped the year that was with an ABC of Mid Canterbury sport for the year.

It’s a well known fact that Mid Canterbury has been long regarded as a bit of a mecca when it comes to producing talent in the horse racing industry of New Zealand. Both equine and human, it’s been there for decades. But there was a time, not that long ago when the future was feared for. Youngsters coming through the ranks were few and far between, and the search for the next Ricky May or Jan Hay seemed fruitless. Right now though, it’s all about the region in the junior driving ranks. John Morrison picked up his third consecutive New Zealand premiership title back in July, and has elevated himself from the junior ranks to senior driver with aplomb and looks set to be one of New Zealand’s best for many seasons to come in the sulky. But he’s also passed on the baton to a fellow Mid Cantab, with Sarah O’Reilly assuming the mantle of the best young driver in the country. There’s a saying in racing that you can just tell if someone is a natural, and Sarah is it. Horses run for her and she consistently

produced the goods for trainers, owners, breeders and punters with excellent results. These two talents already have glittering lists of achievements next to their names, but there’s more in store, and it’s going to be fun to sit back and watch it all unfold in the coming years.

K

imberley Bird

What a year it’s been for Kimberley Bird. The equestrian dynamo shunted her name up into the brightest of lights during the year, showcasing her ability in the saddle at every opportunity she received. Her performance to win the New Zealand Premier Horse championships at McLean’s Island with her stunning grey Cera Cassina. Well-spoken, driven and passionate about her craft, Kimberley is set to embark on the next stage of her career as she prepares to embark on a shift to America to further herself, along with the mare she knows more affectionately as Beezie. Already on a rapid trajectory to being regarded as one of New Zealand’s best in the saddle, Kimberley has demanded the attention of everyone at any event she

Top equestrian Kimberley Bird in action with Cera Cassina. chooses to compete in during the past year, and it’s going to be exciting to track and watch her progress through 2022 as her stocks continue to rise in the tough and competitive world of equestrian.

L

uke Martin

Luke Martin might just be Mid Canterbury’s own version of Cristiano Ronaldo. A goal-scoring machine, but equally a powerful force in the promotion and development of the game as well. There’s no underselling the impact that Luke has on the Mid Canterbury football scene. He’s a tireless worker behind the scenes, and one of the key driving forces behind the success of the senior sides in the district. But get him out on a field and he plays like a man who thinks of little else than what happens on the paddock. It wasn’t the easiest of seasons for the Mid Canterbury United senior side; they came up against some tough opposition all season but toiled hard and picked up some good victories. Martin was at the centre of most of it too. He finished the season as the competition’s golden boot. Up against some really tough defensive lines, he managed to get the ball past the keeper on 16 occasions in the season, one of the highest tallies across all senior football within the Mainland Football catchment. Get the ball to him and he’ll more than likely deliver for you – a simple, yet effective game plan involving Mid Canterbury’s own Mr Football. Above left – Sarah O’Reilly and John Morrison are top harness racing drivers in New Zealand. Left – Luke Martin is a driving force on and off the field for Mid Canterbury football.

Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Courage doesn’t have to be in limited supply. Grow your own. Cultivate it through the magic of habit. Whatever you feel like shrinking from, move toward it. Do that over and over and suddenly, you’re brave. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The purity of your intention will be felt by all; the loveliness of it reads loud and clear. Because of this, you don’t have to say the perfect words or overthink your approach. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll be moved to do something unusual, outside the routine, maybe even against the social norms. This is a new day and a new chance for selfreinvention and discovery. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It’s coming easily to you today – charismatic communication flows. The more you use it, the stronger that flow becomes. You can share it by speaking on someone’s behalf or putting thoughts in writing. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll get two kinds of compliments today: compliments born of neediness (you pity the giver) and compliments that come from genuine appreciation (you love them back): VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Talking to a stranger is always a risk, one worth taking when you feel the friendly vibes flowing today. Regardless of what you learn, good or bad, it will be well worth the effort to get to know new people. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): When there is no one telling you what you must do to improve, you’ll take matters into your own hands. You’ll explore novel territory to stay ahead of the game. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Your process is more important than the end product. The product will be handed over in the end, but the process is yours. You can use your process over and over, reshaping to fit the problem at hand. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): As soon as you say what you want, the spirit of resistance perks up its ears and readies itself to take form – laziness, fear, fatigue... it has many shapes. You’re well-equipped to fight them all. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): As you repeat similar types of projects, you become proficient in identifying which actions lead to a desirable result. But it’s when you’re pushed outside your comfort zone that you really shine. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’re taking care of things that matter. Some of these you don’t recognise as crucial elements of your life, but the fact you tend to them tells the truer story. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’re figuring out what’s working for you. All you have to do now is more of it! Each time increases your confidence and competence further and eases your trepidation about scaling up.
