Not on your life, according to Robilliards Showcase Jewellers’ co-owner Mark Douglas. He’s been working in retail for 30 years and has loved every minute of it. And 14 years ago, Douglas and wife Jayne bought Robilliards Showcase Jewellers in Ashburton because they were in the right place at the right time, and open to a new challenge. “(Robilliards is a) pretty cool thing to be a part of,” Douglas said. “And seeing it into its 125th year is something pretty awesome. “I love talking and interacting with people. It is a fun industry to be a part of.” Mark and Jayne are Robilliards’ fifth owners since it opened in 1896, while the Arcade is its third location and it’s been in that same spot for the past 40 years. The business must be doing something right to have survived so long. Douglas credits the success to the team he has behind him. “I definitely believe in having fun,’’ he said. “When you have to go to work every day you have to enjoy it. “I am very lucky with the team. Some have been part of Robilliards for a long time.” But Douglas admits his time

al MID CANTERBURY ‘We must help each other’ Call for community to stick together Malcolm Hopwood Keeping it local is more important than ever. That’s the key message from Advance Ashburton trustee, Elizabeth Ashford, who said her organisation’s mission statement was synonymous with Ashburton Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local, campaign. “Communities must look to themselves and help each other,” Ashford said in an obvious reference to the pandemic that continued to hold the world to ransom. The Advance Ashburton Community Foundation certainly looks out for its district, with the registered trust having been set up to facilitate personal giving for the benefit of organisations and causes. Now in its 19th year, Advance Ashburton has $16.5 million invested of which the interest is progressively donated throughout the year. In the last financial year, $700,000 was distributed locally, with 32 scholarships awarded. “We are a significant force for good and will grow further with local support and funding,” Ashford said. “We hope the Guardian cam-

Advance Ashburton trustee, Elizabeth Ashford: “If you give local it stays local.” paign will direct people to advance Ashburton district and support foundations such as ours.” Over the past 12 months, Ashford can point to many projects that Advance Ashburton has funded. That includ-

ed Kai for Kids schools’ food programme, housing for the elderly, support for terminally ill through hospice, the mental health facility for young people at the former nurses’ home, social housing and funding for Ashburton Hospital.

Ashford is proud of a local group, headed by Jane Riach, who donate clothing to every baby born in the Ashburton district, and she is also thrilled about BOOST. That’s a literary programme for children between 7-9 years.

The BOOST programme, jointly funded by Advance Ashburton and Mackenzie Charitable Foundation, received $272,000 and was available in 20 schools, reaching 200 children with the help of 60 volunteers. “Volunteer tutors work oneon-one with children over a 30week period,” she said. Ashford said that donors contribute to the existing Advance Ashburton investment pool or they could create their own fund for specific use of their money. “They come to us and specify what they want done with their donations,” she said. “Other funders have supported talented and aspiring young people to seek further qualifications. Last year 32 scholarships were awarded, valued at $90,000. “If you give local it stays local.” Ashford said the foundation had also benefited from receiving funding from organisations such as Ashburton Jaycees and the benefit society, who’ve come to the end of their life. “They’ve come to Advance Ashburton and specified what they want their money to go towards,” she said. “I’d encourage more organisations to bring their money to us. “They can have input on where their money goes and their name can be associated with the fund.”

Abusive behaviour denounced Adam Burns

Cases of abuse directed to Ashburton business owners due to Covid-19 restrictions has angered the mayor. Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown has denounced the behaviour of those who have resorted to hositility when interacting with staff who are enforcing Covid and vaccination requirements. The traffic light system came into effect on Friday, replacing the alert level system with vaccine passports a key component within the new settings. Mr Man’s Bakery and Cafe was forced to call police on the first day of the Government’s traffic light system after staff asked to see a customer’s vaccine passport. Police confirmed on Friday it was making enquiries after an offender, who left on foot, was alleged to have caused wilful damage at the bakery. Mr Man’s owner Savonn Man, who was not present in the store at the time, was informed by his staff about the incident. “They started yelling and smashing the table,” he said. “I’m disappointed with these people because this is what the Government has said. “But it’s all fine now.” Man said people needed to understand what was expected of them.

“I don’t like people who try to break the rules.” Another bakery in Lincoln also reported a number of instances of people getting upset when they learned that only vaccinated people would be served on Friday. There has also been an unconfirmed report of abuse being directed to an owner at an Ashburton hairdressing salon in the past fortnight around vaccination status. Mayor Brown said abusing busi-

ness owners around the issue was “completely wrong”. “It’s not their right,” he said. “They’ve chosen not to be vaccinated and the Government have brought the regulations in that those businesses are adhering to.” Ashburton butchery Netherby Meats, who were not enforcing vaccine passports as it would require employing an additional person, issued a reminder last week on its social media page after a customer allegedly refused

to wear a mask and upset a staff member. “Please respect the rules, it’s there for all our staff and customers’ benefit and be nice there is no need to be abusive about it.” Owner/operator Mike Hanson said although there had been some pushback around mask wearing, most people had been understanding. “They’re pretty good,” he said. “We’re a small shop and can only fit five people at a time but

[customers] are fine with it.” Wider feedback from hospitality operators during the first weekend of the traffic light system indicated that the majority of customers were mostly complaisant with the “odd exception”. Cleavers Corner Gastro Pub co-owner Nikita Moore said most people had responded “pretty well overall” to vaccination passports. “It’s always going to be a niggly thing,” she said. “It was something that we as business owners never wanted to do and people seem to think you’ve got the choice, but when you’re running a business it’s obviously something you have to take into consideration.” In Methven, the Dubliner pub said it had very few issues and people were well prepared. “Most people were absolutely lovely about it, we had the odd one who was disgruntled or a bit impatient about it (the rules),” co-owner Karen Manning said. She said it did add to the workload of senior staff members who were managing the passport verification process. “It’s like a separate role where we have somebody come and meet them at the door so it is taking a little bit away from my job where I’m at the door dealing with that, as opposed to being on the job inside.”

Arsonist the grinch at the Christmas Market Jonathan Leask The Christmas Market was the first event in the district to operate under the new Orange restrictions. There was no animosity towards the use of vaccine passports, but there was a grinch in those responsible for the fire that put a literal dark cloud over the event.

The market was in full swing in Tinwald until a deliberately lit scrub fire next to the Tinwald end of the Ashburton River Bridge closed State Highway 1. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the scene at around 1.55pm and as the smoke billowed across the road, police were forced to close off SH1 with traffic being diverted inland to State Highway 72 through Ashburton Forks. Crews left the scene at 3.30pm and traffic started flowing again shortly after. A police spokeswoman confirmed the cause of the fire was

arson and they were making further inquiries. The fire stopped traffic and put a halt to what had been a bustling market day in Tinwald. “It was all going really well until the fire at the bridge stopped people coming over,” market organiser Carol Johns said. “All of sudden the place went quiet and I didn’t have my phone on me so I didn’t know what was happening when I said to one of the stallholders “it’s like someone has closed off the road”. Johns had initially planned to run the market on East Street in conjunction with the annual San-

ta parade along Cass Street, but Covid restrictions would have made it impossible, she said. Instead Johns moved the market to the Tinwald Recreation area, where she could have control over the entry points to comply with the Orange restrictions. As the first major event in the district to run under the new traffic light system, Johns said everything went well and without complaint. “The market side is considered retail so only required people to scan in and then we divided off the other area – the food, rides, father Christmas and other stuff-

so you needed to show a vaccine pass to enter. “We didn’t have any problems at all. “No-one got angry and we probably only had half a dozen that didn’t have a vaccine pass for various reasons. “Everything worked well and it’s just a real shame about the fire.” Before the fire things “were going gangbusters”, Johns said, but “certainly took a dive once the road had closed”. The stallholders had been kept busy and well over 800 kids passed on their Christmas wish list to Father Christmas, Johns said.

Joyce our Guardian ‘mother’ will be sorely missed Malcolm Hopwood One of the Ashburton Guardian’s identities, Joyce Bingham, retired on Friday after 22 years as distribution administrator, but it wasn’t a natural exit. Before she left, Joyce cleaned the Guardian car, filled it with petrol, stayed on duty until midday Saturday and helped out by delivering about 150 newspapers in the Allenton area. Then she stepped away from the job. At her farewell, Guardian owner, Bruce Bell, described Joyce as the “mother of the Guardian’’ for her 30-year involvement with the newspaper. “No-one else came a close second,” he said. In her early days, Joyce was “camp mother” to over 100 paper delivery boys and girls but, once appointed circulation manager, she took on a myriad of roles. “She never said no to anything asked of her and always said ‘not a problem’,’’ Bell said. “Subscribers would know Joyce better than anyone else. She was one of the kindest, most generous, big-hearted people I know.” In an article written about her at the time of the Guardian’s 140th anniversary, Joyce was described as the Guardian’s answer to a midwife, “but it wasn’t babies she delivered, it was newspapers”.

A happy Guardian stalwart Joyce Bingham with the paper’s owner Bruce Bell. Bingham has retired from the Guardian after 22 years’ service as the circulation manager. PHOTO MALCOLM HOPWOOD About 2am, six days a week, more recently three days, thousands of Guardians would arrive at the depot from the printer. Joyce’s responsibility was to organise the urban drivers to meet the delivery van. Most of the time it worked like clockwork but, when it didn’t, Joyce, tucked up in bed, would receive a call.

There was a breakdown at the printers, bundles were missing or the delivery truck was running late. Joyce would spring out of bed and handle the situation. Sometimes it was every other night, sometimes once a week and often she’d not get a good night’s sleep for days on end. What was important to her

was getting the Guardian to loyal subscribers. She prided herself on a faultless record but, on occasions, she’d get a grumpy call. Joyce recalled one occasion when a subscriber was so irate, she told him to calm down in case he had a heart attack. “He listened to me, settled down and was very appreciative when I delivered his paper,” she

Top IoD accolade for Kennedy An Ashburton business leader has been recognised with Institute of Directors’ highest accolade. Graham Kennedy MNZM has been named a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Directors (IoD) – the institute’s highest accolade. Kennedy received the honour alongside fellow Cantabrian Gill Cox. The pair are both chartered accountants with a long history of governance and business leadership of corporate and not-forprofit entities in Canterbury and nationally. The Distinguished Fellow Award is the IoD’s highest accolade and is awarded to IoD members who have had a prominent and distinguished career as a director and have contributed positively to business and society. Kennedy has been an active and respected member of the Canterbury business community since the 1970s. From 1977 to 2011 he was a director then chair of Ashburton-based accountancy firm Brophy Knight. During his tenure he provided business advice to numerous commercial enterprises, volun-

Ian Kennedy tary organisations, and individuals. Through BK Registries, an innovative share register working for several prominent NZX-listed companies, he helped innovate and set New Zealand-wide standards.

Kennedy is now an independent professional director and has been chair of private and large family companies, including property, tourism, agribusiness, transport, construction and professional services. He has held governance roles

in the building society sector since 1985, including leading consolidation of a number of enterprises and culminating in being a founding director of the NZX-listed Heartland Bank Ltd for more than nine years. He is a trustee of the Ashburton Aquatic Park Charitable Trust and was a driving force behind the establishment of Lake Hood development and the adjacent Ashburton Aquatic Park. In 2005, he was awarded a District of Ashburton Civic Honour for services to the establishment of Lake Hood. Kennedy has been involved at a governance level in a variety of community-based charitable organisations, including the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation. He has held various voluntary administrative positions in organisations, including serving as the branch treasurer of the New Zealand Red Cross for eight years. He was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Business in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours. Kennedy and Gill were recognised by the Canterbury branch at a dinner in Christchurch on Thursday.

said. Those calls were the exception because Guardian readers were very passionate about their newspaper, she said. “They wanted their daily fix with their breakfast. It’s life or death to them. “I was the fixer, the trouble shooter, the one who sorted things out.” Joyce will miss “my subscribers’’ and the people she’s helped over the years. “I felt if personally when subscribers shared their stories with me, stories of illness, death, success, babies, their lives,” she said. “It was very humbling.” She prided herself on delivering in snow, floods, wind, rain, all the elements. “It was very rare when I couldn’t get a newspaper through,” she said. Joyce would always go the extra mile and when an elderly subscriber in Reighton Drive couldn’t pick her newspaper up from the ground, Joyce would always place it on a garden pot so the woman wouldn’t have to bend down. And for Joyce it’s certainly been a family thing. Husband Derek and their children have all been involved in delivering Guardians. But now it’s over she wants to take an extended holiday to Christchurch, Auckland, and the Sunshine Coast. But first Joyce and Derek are heading to Lake Heron. The reason? There’s no cellphone coverage so no-one can ring her about the Guardian, a missed delivery or to cancel it over Christmas.

SHORT & SHARP Counterfeit notes Reports of counterfeit money circulating in Ashburton last week were proved false after police used ultra violet light to check the notes in question. On closer examination it was determined the notes were genuine, a police spokeswoman said.

Rivers in flood Canterbury’s alpine rivers were running high on Monday. The Rangitata flow peaked at just over 1000 cumecs at 1.30am Monday at the gorge recorder, but was receding at the gorge by mid-morning and the peak flows reached the river mouth by midday. Environment Canterbury staff were monitoring the river and had no signficant out of river flooding to report.

Ashburton 90 per cent The Ashburton district is more than 90 per cent fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Latest figures updated on Sunday has the eligible district at 90.5 per cent fully vaccinated and 5.8 per cent partially vaccinated. This amounts to just under 25,000 of Mid Canterbury residents. The wider Canterbury region hit the 90 per cent mark milestone on Friday.

Failed MSA restaurant leased out Noble 600 has been losing $30,000-plus a month Daryl Holden Crippling revenue losses has resulted in Ashburton’s embattled MSA club leasing out its failed fine dining restaurant to new managers. The Noble 600 Restaurant, which opened in June, will now be run by the owners of Ashburton’s Speight’s Ale House, Tony Potts and partner Wendy Ritchie, in a move that has been welcomed by all. Ashburton Club and Mutual School of Arts’ interim committee chairman, Mike Crequer, said it was a “magnificent’’ result because the restaurant had been losing in “excess of $30,000 a month’’ since opening. Crequer said the lease would be for 12 months with two annual right of renewal clauses. “But to us, it’s long term,’’ he said. “I can’t say we wouldn’t ever get back into the restaurant trade because it would be wrong of me to say that, but the plan is that it (the lease) would be ongoing.’’ Crequer said the Noble 600 Restaurant had failed in the eyes of most its members with its fine dining concept and steep prices.

Menu changes and alterations in prices had been adapted since its early days but it was still not attracting punters through the doors, which was why closing it completely was a consideration. The restaurant development, part of the club’s extensive rebuild project, had also contributed to a $2 million budget blowout, which had further jeopardised the club’s worrying financial position that had been compounded by Covid-19 restrictions. In the end, it also resulted in

a special general meeting being called where the club’s executive committee was ousted by unhappy members. “I announced the restaurant move to members the other night and there were cheers and clapping,’’ Crequer said. “They were very happy about it. “I think it had got around to them all just how much we were losing every month.’’ The restaurant’s six staff has also been retained by the new

managers, with tomorrow signalling the first day under their control. Crequer also said Timaru accountancy firm, Martin Wakefield, had been enlisted to provide full financial accounts for the entire MSA organisation for the past two years. He hoped that would be available before Christmas and that the Inland Revenue Department was involved. The IRD would then make a call on whether the club had to fork out long-stand-

ing penalty tax payments apparently totalling over $100,000. The financial statements would also confirm the status of the club’s Super Liquor Bottle Store and whether it was insolvent, as had been suggested. “Trading in the bottle store has picked up immensely,’’ Crequer said. “I honestly think it’s due to attracting back the former manager (Karen Leckie) back into the staff. “She has made a big difference. So we are working our way back.’’

Nitrogen loss project working Hinds and Selwyn dairy farmers are taking steps to reduce farm nitrogen loss, according to a recent DairyNZ survey. DairyNZ surveyed 235 of 450 Hinds and Selwyn dairy farms, with all reporting positive environmental changes on-farm including improved irrigation efficiency, fertiliser use and new technologies. “The survey shows Selwyn and Hinds farmers are working hard to reduce their footprint,” DairyNZ solutions and development lead advisor Virginia Serra said. “Taking steps now to reduce nitrogen losses will help improve water quality over time. We know it isn’t easy, but farmers are on the journey and support is available from DairyNZ, dairy companies and rural professionals.” The survey showed that 81 per cent of farmers have improved irrigation systems or management; more than 50 per cent have changed fertiliser use and improved effluent management; and some farmers have changed stocking rate, are using the grazing herb plantain which reduces nitrogen loss or have made other changes to benefit the environment. DairyNZ has been working with Selwyn and Hinds farmers for three years in a project to help farmers reduce nitrogen

loss, while optimising profit and resilience. The project, Meeting a Sustainable Future, is trialling options with 40 partner farms and shares the knowledge with local farmers through field days and events. The work is designed to help farmers meet Environment Canterbury and government rules, Serra said. Under ECan rules, Selwyn dairy farmers must reduce nitrogen losses by 30 per cent by 2022, compared to their baseline figure from 2009-2013. A farm’s baseline is its average annual nitrogen loss over those four years. In Hinds, farmers have to reduce nitrogen losses by 15 per cent by 2025, 25 per cent by 2030 and 36 per cent by 2035. In July, a new nationwide nitrogen cap took effect, capping synthetic nitrogen fertiliser applied to pasture at 190kg N/ ha/year. Farmers throughout the country are working hard to achieve this. As part of the Meeting a Sustainable Future project, DairyNZ and partner farmers have hosted more than 20 field days and events to discuss options. More than 500 farmers and employees attended one of these field days or events in the past year (90 per cent of Selwyn and Hinds dairy farms).

District home to some high producing herds Heather Chalmers The Ashburton District has some of New Zealand’s biggest and highest producing dairy herds, according to the latest dairy industry statistics. Mid Canterbury’s 415 herds have an average herd size of 884 cows, the second largest in New Zealand. The Mackenzie District has the highest average herd size with 980 cows, but this is based on only 16 herds. Southland has the most cows (443,678), followed by Ashburton (366,710). Nationally, Mackenzie had the highest average production per herd with 408,244 kilograms of milksolids, followed by Ashburton with 387,400kg/MS. Hurunui had the highest average milksolids per effective hectare with 1605kg, while Ashburton had the second highest (1561kg/ha). Hurunui also re-

DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle says farmers are focused on developing more productive and efficient cows and farming systems, with a lighter environmental footprint. PHOTO SUPPLIED corded the highest average production per cow (465kg of milksolids) compared with 438kg/ MS/cow in Mid Canterbury. Dairying covers 102,988 hectares of the Ashburton District, with an average effective hectare farm size of 248ha and an aver-

age stocking rate of 3.56 cows/ ha. Of the Ashburton district’s herds, 223 are run by owner-operators, 66 by contract milkers and 126 by sharemilkers. South Taranaki continues to be the district with the highest

number of herds (943) with an average herd size of 321 cows. The South Island has 42.1 per cent of the nation’s dairy cows, with 19.7 per cent in Canterbury. New Zealand dairy farmers hit a new high for milk production last season with fewer cows, showing that a focus on breeding higher performing cows is paying off. The annual New Zealand Dairy Statistics report, released by DairyNZ and Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC), shows that total milk volume, total milksolids and per cow production were the highest on record in the 2020-21 season. New Zealand has 4.9 million milking cows – down from 4.92 million the previous season, and they produced 1.95 billion kilograms of milksolids. DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle said it was great to see a continuation of the “more milk from fewer cows” trend because it shows a continuing focus on milking better cows and farming even more sustainably. “Farmers are focused on developing more productive and efficient cows and farming sys-

tems, with a lighter environmental footprint. They want to retain our unique pasture-based farming system and remain world leading.” Favourable weather conditions also contributed to good grass growth, while higher milk prices meant many farmers extended their milking season in 2020/21. The percentage of cows mated to artificial breeding rose to 71.3 per cent (up from 70.8 per cent in 2019/20), and the number of cows herd tested is the highest on record (3.735 million cows, or 76.2 per cent of the national herd). Herd testing enables farmers to monitor and improve the quality and productivity of their herds. Mackle said that dairy plays a really key role in New Zealand as the sector employs around 50,000 Kiwis and was estimated to contribute over $37 billion to the economy in 2020/21. “The latest Dairy Statistics report shows that despite a range of challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic and staff shortages, farmers are working hard to keep milk production flowing, and this benefits every Kiwi.”

M. bovis: local property cleaned, cleared A beef property in Mid Canterbury has been cleared of cattle disease mycoplasma bovis. The property has been cleared and cleaned, ready to resume normal farming activities. This brings the total active confirmed properties working through the eradication process down to three, all in Mid Canterbury. They are two dairy farms, both detected through August screening of Bulk Tank Milk (BTM), and

the long standing Five Star Beef feedlot case. The national surveillance tools developed by the M. bovis eradication programme, including BTM screening and beef surveillance continue to provide confidence M. bovis is not widespread, a Ministry for Primary Industries spokeswoman said. “These tools play an important role in looking for infection outside the tracing network. They’ll also play a significant

part in providing the confidence needed to declare New Zealand M. bovis free.” The BTM screening programme takes samples each month at the point of collection as part of the normal milk collection process. Samples are screened for M. bovis antibodies and indicates where a closer look is needed. October and November screening is now complete, with the programme testing samples

from over 10,700 farms each month. There were zero detect results from both monthly screenings compared to nine detect results in October 2020 and three in November 2020. “As BTM screens milk samples monthly, from all milk suppliers, it is a powerful tool with results giving us confidence that M. bovis is not widespread in the dairy sector.” The beef surveillance pro-

gramme screens beef cattle not connected to the known network of infected properties. As at November 30, more than 546,200 animals have been sampled by the beef surveillance programme from over 17,500 farms. “There have been no infected farms found from the beef surveillance programme to date, giving us increasing confidence that M. bovis is not widespread in the beef sector.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’ll help someone and it helps you twice as much. Giving your love brings a similar outcome. If your aim is selfless service, then you’re out of luck. Every generous act will enrich and benefit you! TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): There are no perfect pairings, but there are more or less compatible people. You’re in luck. Life will show you who fits into which category. You’re in the mood for a smooth ride and that’s what you’ll get. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Some things are worth doing even though they might be difficult, and some things are worth doing because they’re sure to be difficult. No one ever got strong lifting feathers. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): An ambitious mood strikes. Ambition requires you to take risks, and risks come with fear, and fear feeds into thrills, which can be addictive. This is only the start of the excitement. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): When your gift doesn’t make the impression you wanted it to, this is nothing to take personally. People receive when they are ready to receive. Let time do its part. Anyway, you’re richer for giving. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your smile creates community wherever it goes. Your smile says, “this is a good place to be” and it also says, “I’m glad to be here with you.” Your smile makes others share that gladness. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): A tangent will turn into a main focus, mainly because you keep getting attention, money and props for it. This is actually starting to feel like a calling, if not an obsession. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Good questions get direct answers. Rewrite your question until it rings true, ask your heart for answers and write down what it says. Move your hand across the page unthinkingly; the words will come. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You say “thank you” in many ways. Your enjoyment, the time you spend lingering with a person or an idea and your willingness to help are all expressions of gratitude heard loud and clear. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll dance with a deal – not because the deal asked you to dance but because you were already on the dance floor together. Keep dancing and see what else comes. There’s soon to be a crowd. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Don’t let the ideal in your head block the reality in front of your nose. There is something very useful close at hand. You can do amazing thing with this scene exactly the way it is. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Do you feel there’s someone out there waiting for someone like you? The more outreach you do, the faster the match can get made.

Perfect 10 for cricket obsessed F

amily and staff would probably look at me weirdly if I said a perfect day was watching eight hours of test cricket – for five days in a row. Nothing better. I wouldn’t expect them all to understand. After all, cricket is a game of tactics. A game of the mind. That rules out most of them for a start. Joking, of course. But the beauty of test cricket, apart from the fact that it goes for longer than other sports, is that it has the capacity to throw up unique performances every session of every day. It can grip you like no other and is able to provide quite the rollercoaster of emotions. We saw that again at the weekend when Black Cap Ajaz Patel, a left-arm spin bowler of modest

Daryl Holden international standing, spun his way into the cricket history books with a scarcely believable 10-wicket haul against India in Mumbai. The 33-year-old captured 10119 off 47.5 overs, becoming just the third person in test cricket’s 144-year history to dismiss a whole side on their own. Patel joined England’s Jim Laker (10-53 against Australia in Manchester in 1956) and India’s Anil Kumble (10-74 against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999) as the only players to have achieved the

perfect 10 in what is the 2438th match in test cricket. Unfortunately, Patel’s likely to be the only one of the three to be on the losing side, with the Black Caps unlikely to take the match into the fifth and final day at the time of print. Still, in no way should that rob Patel of his sensational moment in the blazing sun where the quality of his bowling was top notch, his endurance in stifling heat quite remarkable. What made it even more special was that Patel lived in Mumbai, formerly Bombay, until he was eight when his family emigrated to New Zealand. His story gets better because Patel used to be a quick bowler when he started playing seriously in New Zealand before he switched to spin bowling. He of-

ten used to bowl quick and spin in the same innings in his early experimental days and had to move from Auckland to Central Districts to get more first-class play. And now he’s among the pantheons of test bowling’s greats for a single performance that must rank as New Zealand test cricket’s greatest individual showing. Better than Brendon McCullum’s 302 against India in 2014? Yep, I reckon. Better, too, than Sir Richard Hadlee’s 9-52 in a rare away win over Australia in 1985. It also surpassed Nathan Astle’s world fastest double century (a destructive 222 from 167 balls) in a losing test to England in Christchurch in 2002. And, yes, it was also better than Mark Greatbatch’s unbeat-

en and heroic game-saving 146, from nearly 14 hours’ batting, in a drawn test against the Aussies in Perth in 1989. And what made Patel’s performance even more special was the way the crowd and players got into the moment and appreciated and saluted what had just unfolded before them. Even hardened cynics and the fiercest of Indian opposition players – and no doubt those who watch the game for a living and have seen it and, in many cases, done it all – broke with habit, rose to their feet and applauded. And so they should have had. It was one of those moments that defines test cricket as the game of all games. Ajaz Patel proved that yet again in a life-changing performance.

Matthew’s our number one fan

M

atthew Seymour is Hokonui’s biggest fan by far! Matthew is one of the reasons I still get a kick out of this radio gig. He pops into the studio for an hour once a month. Matthew loves coming into the radio. He told me yesterday that talking on the radio is lots of fun. He loves it when people say: “I heard you on the radio Matthew” when he is busy collecting shopping trolleys at Countdown North. He loves it even more when his girlfriend says she heard him on the radio. Matthew loves coming in this month especially, he is a big fan of Christmas songs especially Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer. It is also his birthday month which he reminded me four times about yesterday morning. Maybe Manda has told him about my failing memory. Yesterday when we were chatting about him enjoying talking on the radio, he said that he’d be happy to fill in for me if I’m ever away on holiday, although he would have to do a recorded show from 8am on Wednesdays as he has to get to Walking Netball at the EA Networks Centre by 8.30am. Matthew did give me a bit of a dressing down yesterday though as I had forgotten to have a talk with Mayor Neil Brown about the trains moving out of town to Fairton in the future. Matthew is not happy about this plan one little bit, he LOVES watching the trains and you’ll often see him parked up on his scooter giving them the once over.

OFF THE AIR

If you do your shopping at Countdown North, I’d love it if you could say to Matthew he’s doing a great job on the radio, when you see him gathering the trolleys. It would absolutely make his day. On a different note. For all those of my vintage and older, how cool would these items look in your Mancave or Sheshed? Happy Days TV star Henry Winkler is auctioning some of the iconic props used in his role as The Fonz for charity. It includes the leather jacket he wore, as well as The Fonz silver Triumph motorcycle, which could fetch $120,000 US dollars. Winkler also saved scripts, photos and other memorable props and costumes worn during the show which will also be auctioned off. The proceeds will benefit a non-profit venture his daughter Zoe started that helps separated migrant families at the US border. Straight to the pool room? ‘Exactamundo’ Till Next Week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper More like Potsy Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. Luxon has to exorcise ghosts of leaders past By Heather du Plessis-Allan

A

s far as first weeks in the job go, Chris Luxon’s actually had a tough start. He’s getting no honeymoon period. Some in the media have grilled him like his last name’s Muller or Collins. Instead of kicking off the job with a blank slate, he seems to have started with one blotted by the leaders before him. He’s obviously going to have to first prove he’s not just another failed National leader before he gets the benefit of the doubt. Fortunately for him, what members of the media think and what voters think are not always the same. Few outside the beltway probably care if a leader of such a short term can correctly pick the living

wage. Hardly anyone has last election term’s abortion laws on their list of the top 10 priorities right now. Even the criticism of him owning seven properties probably won’t hurt much. Aspirational voters will likely respond with a “good on him” and the hope they too might one day attain similar success. The politics of envy often plays out worse for those throwing around the “rich prick” label than those being labelled with it, especially if punters haven’t enough time to judge whether the person in question actually is a prick. But, tough as it’s been, it’s also been a good week for him. There is a discernible sense of relief among centre-right voters. Luxon was spontaneously applauded by members of the

public after an outdoors press conference in Tauranga. He was congratulated by punters during a walkabout in Auckland’s viaduct. That’s a marked contrast from the heckling the PM currently experiences in some public experiences. Some of that response is a reaction to his key messages. They’re catnip to centre-right votes: “our farmers are not villains”, “good intentions don’t pay the rent”, “I believe in a New Zealand that while small in size is large in ambition”. Some of the public’s response is driven by the expectation they have attached to the man anointed by Sir John Key. And some of it is relief that National has a leader who looks the part. He’s projected confidence in his press conferences and easily batted off criticism in his inter-

We have had a wedge push by government to racial divide us, no mention of this in the last election. South Island people think differently to the Aucklanders who are running the country, so yes let’s try and do something about it. Robert Spencer

* * * I agree with Lindsay a 100 per cent. The South Island has been shafted totally by the present government. The sooner the South Island becomes a separate state the better. Mick Hooper

views. Neither necessarily come naturally to new leaders. Case in point, Todd Muller’s wooden first press conference. But he’s also taken positions that present a clear contrast to some of the more frustrating positions held by the Government. He’s labelled the controversial iwi checkpoints as “nuts”. Labour tolerates them. Worse, Labour’s even passed legislation to allow the threatened Northland checkpoints this summer. Luxon’s called for Auckland to be moved to the green light setting. Labour plans to keep the city in red, despite Covid case numbers seemingly trending down, no pressure on hospitals and the city’s vaccination rates being some of the highest in the world. The timing is right for Luxon,

which is why he’s taken the job. Polls in recent weeks – even the Roy Morgan offering on Friday – show an ongoing decline in support for Labour. There’s diminishing public respect for decisions that no longer make sense. Like barring returning Kiwis from coming home easily before Christmas. It makes no sense to have them wait until January 17. If Luxon can make it through the next two weeks in Parliament’s calendar, he’ll send centre-right and frustrated swing voters off to their summer barbecues with something to talk about. And if the next set of polls show the expected bump up for the National Party that matches anywhere near the relief those voters are showing, he might yet get his (delayed) honeymoon period.

Mid Canterbury trotter ninth million dollar earner

Australian trainer Andy Gath praised Tornado Valley’s “Kiwi connections” after the champion became just the ninth Australasian trotter to top $1 million in career earnings with his victory at Melton on the weekend. Gath was adamant the patience and development work Mid Canterbury’s Terry McMillan and Petina Gaugler put into Tornado Valley before he left NZ to join Gath’s stable helped make Tornado Valley and give the rising 10-year-old his longevity. “They gave him every chance, really took their time with him and didn’t over-race him before he came across to us. We’re really appreciative of that,” Gath said. “We’re still in touch with them and I’m sure they’ll get a huge thrill from tonight as well.” Tornado Valley headed to Melton assured of topping the million, but it was only fitting he did it with a runaway win in quick time and in a feature race, the Group 3 Freestone Trotters’ Cup. Tornado Valley’s win was his 39th from 108 starts with another 31 placings. He’s won 10 Group 1 races, including an Inter Dominion and two Great Southern Stars. Saturday night’s purse took his career earnings to $1,013,477. And there’s more to come. “There’s still a bit of life in him yet,” Kate Gath said.

SHORT & SHARP

Laking does it again

For the second time in a month, Mid Canterbury hoop Jason Laking watched one of his rides get away from him before the start, only to resaddle and go out and win again. During Cup Week, one of Laking’s rides escaped from him in the stalls only to be recaptured and then go on and win, and on Friday it happened again. Riding Fastmosa for good friend Jamie Bullard, Laking was tossed out of the saddle on the way to the start, but got back on the gelding, and they delivered a telling blow to win late in the day. He is now just five wins away from 400 career wins.

O’Reilly grabs a double Rakaia horseman Leo O’Reilly picked up a winning double at Sunday’s Akaroa meeting. The astute horseman produced a perfectly timed drive on board Little Gee to win during the middle stages of the big programme for trainer Chris McDowell, then a few races later trained and drove Maren Franco to victory for the longstanding Strappers Syndicate.

Andy Gath added: “With respect to the horses he beat tonight, if he didn’t beat them then it probably would have been the end, but he didn’t just beat them, he won easily. “We’ll know when it’s time to retire him, he’ll tell us, but it’s not yet, not on how he won tonight. “The win proved he’s still got

plenty left, and he loves being in work and around the stables. “You think about another go at the Great Southern Star with him, it’s not that far away, but he’ll tell us if we give it another go or not.” Tornado Valley left New Zealand as the winner of seven races and more than $70,000 in stake earnings, but quickly stamped

his mark on the Australian scene, and has since won a further 32 races, including the 10 Group One victories. He joined I Can Doosit, Sundons Gift, Speeding Spur, Take A Moment, Stent, Keystone Del and One Over Kenny as the only Australasian trotters so far to reach the magical million-dollar mark.

Talented young horsewoman Sarah O’Reilly wasted no time in getting back into the winning groove after an injury enforced layoff. Early in November, the leading junior driver in NZ suffered a burst appendix, which outed her from racing for a number of weeks. She returned on Friday at Wingatui and picked up where she left off reining $48-toone shot Proviseur to success for Michael House. O’Reilly is back in action today at Manawatu where she has a full book of drives.

Heartland XV fall to Barbarians Matt Markham The New Zealand Heartland XV fell short of their goal to knock over the NZ Barbarians on Sunday afternoon, but their effort wasn’t without merit, as they pushed their rivals close in a bruising 80-minute encounter. The Heartland side, which featured five Mid Canterbury players; Seta Koroitamana, Nick Foxley, Raitube Vasurakuta, Callum Burrell and Manasa Bari, lost the match 36-24, but did have the BaaBaas on the ropes for most of the first half. It was a Mid Canterbury start to the match, with Foxley scoring the opening try of the game after just five minutes. Following a good string of play, including some powerful work by the forwards, including Koroitamana, Foxley got the ball with plenty of work to do, but bounced off defenders to score and put his side in front. The Barbarians bounced back to level the score before a penalty and then a second try for the Heartland side saw them up 17-7.

Locals leave their mark on epic clash

A yellow card, just before halftime changed the match though, with the Barbarians bouncing back to score two quick tries before the break to grab a 19-17 lead. The second half saw the Barbarians take control, and they raced out to a 36-17 lead before a late try gave the Heartland side something to smile about – but it wasn’t enough to see them home. Momentarily though it looked

The 2021 NZ Heartland XV squad and management featuring locals; Seta Koroitamana, Nick Foxley, Callum Burrell, Manasa Bari, Raitube Vasuraktua and Tony Harrison. like they had worked their way back into the match, when Vasurakuta made one of his trademark dashing runs down the sideline and placed the ball on the ground for one of his team-mates to scoop up and score. But television replays of the play saw the ball moving forward

upon the winger’s placement, and the try was overruled by the television match official. All five Mid Canterbury players gained time on the paddock, with Korotimana his usual busy self while Burrell was really productive when he came onto the paddock.

The match on Sunday capped a week-long camp for the Heartland side, and is the only match they play this year. As well as the five local players, the day was also a big occasion for Mid Canterbury manager, Tony Harrison, who was in charge of the national side.

Taranaki claim glory in Interprovincial Matt Markham There was no fairytale appearance at on the final day of the Golf NZ Men’s Interprovincial tournament held in Ashburton last week, but the visiting teams all knew the locals were there. The side finished seventh overall on the standings – missing out on playing in the top four on Saturday – by a solitary victory, and went within one head-to-head battle of beating the tournament’s champions Taranaki with the same result against the event’s runners-up, Hawke’s Bay as well. Aorangi played both teams during the course of the round robin and lost both matches by just one match, with the game against Taranaki seeing two of the side’s match play results going right down to the wire, with possible victories just eluding the local side.

Aorangi team 1: Angela Gerken (Timaru) 2: Lynda Brown (Timaru) 3: Catherine Knight (Methven) 4: Ginny Bolderston (Geraldine) 5: Judith Yates (North Otago) 6: Brittney Haugh (Kurow) Manager: Angela Mowbray

From their six matches across the four days of play, the Aorangi side grabbed two victories and two drawn matches to see them settle in the middle of the standings at the end of a big week of play. They registered wins against Poverty Bay East Coast and Tasman, while they also drew fixtures with Bay Of Plenty and Southland, with their two losses coming against the two finalists on the Ashburton Golf Course on Saturday. Timaru’s Tim Leonard ended the week as Aorangi’s best performer, with four wins and a draw from his six matches, while Cameron Grant picked up three wins and two draws from his games to record a tidy week of play. The attention today turns to the female equivalent of the event. The Golf NZ Women’s Interprovincial kicks off this morning at the Timaru Golf Club, where Aorangi will be out to produce another good result against many of New Zealand’s best. The side feature’s Methven’s Catherine Knight as the only Mid Canterbury-based player, but Angela Mowbray will also be at the helm of the team as manager. The team kicks off this morning against Bay Of Plenty in the first round, before a grudge match against neighbours Canterbury this afternoon. Wednesday will see a match against Waikato in the morning before the bye in the second round of the day. On Thursday they play Hawkes Bay Poverty Bay and then on Friday it’s Taranaki in the morning with Northland in the afternoon, with the top four teams going through to finals day on Saturday.

Allenton grab first win

Sporting their new uniforms, Allenton were able to celebrate in style on Saturday grabbing their first win of the season.

Matt Markham Allenton are finally on the board in South Canterbury Cricket’s Tweedy Cup, and they’ve got Satwant Singh to thank for it. Nine weeks into this season’s competition and the newcomers to the fold in 2021 picked up their first victory on the weekend, when they beat Timaru-based side Star, on the Ashburton Domain. And if it hadn’t been for Singh, victory would still to this day be eluding them. The talented all-rounder saved the day with the bat, as an almost entire batting line-up collapse unfolded in front of his eyes, and he then turned around with the ball while trying to defend a small total and tore through the Star batting line-up on his way to six wickets. So, it wasn’t pretty. But it’s a win all the same, and Allenton have now pushed the monkey off their shoulders and can launch into the rest of the season without the winless tag hanging over them. After losing the toss, life didn’t

Satwant Singh heroics lead side to victory look so rosy early on in their batting innings. The two openers both fell without scoring, but a fightback of sorts saw them through to 3-67 after 24 overs. However, in an innings which featured four ducks, two of them golden, and all-counted eight batsmen who failed to reach double-figures – a big score was never going to happen, with Singh providing the only real resistance. Batting at four, he lasted for 83 deliveries in an hour and a half at the crease to score 35. He was the ninth batsman to fall, and watched on as six of his team-mates fell in front of him. Fifteen runs from both Sanjay Undre and also Muhammad Ateeq were the only other valuable contributions, as the Allenton side limped through to 111 all out

in the 32nd over of the match. And, in any other circumstance, that would have spelt defeat. With the ball, Allenton made the perfect start. Kulvinder Kirk had one of Star’s two openers caught behind in the first ball of the innings for a golden royal duck, but two partnerships of 30 and 23 for the second and third wickets respectively saw the match drifting out of Allenton’s reach. Singh was thrown the ball though, and proceeded to go about decimating the Star lineup. He claimed six wickets from his almost 10 overs and conceded just 21 runs. Four of his wickets were cleanbowled deliveries another an lbw, and the sixth a caught behind by the keeper underlining the near

perfect lines he was bowling on. He ensured no solid partnerships were formed late in the innings for Star to pull off a victory, and cleaned up the tail quickly to get the win, with Star reaching 98 before they were all out. Kirk picked up two wickets while Satveer Singh did the same. But the day belonged to Satwant. The win lifted Allenton off the bottom of the table and ahead of Star, but they are still three wins behind the fourth placed Temuka side, leaving a lot of work to do if they want to play knockout cricket late in the season. Meanwhile, the Tech Stags were left to rue another missed opportunity to topple competition leaders Pleasant Point on Saturday. Second on the standings and only beaten by the defending champions this season, the Tech lads did a fantastic job with the ball after losing the toss to restrict them to just 202/5 off their 50 overs. Richard Print was again mercurial, with his 10 overs seeing him grab three wickets while only conceding 29 runs, as all six of the bowlers used by the side kept runs tight and hard to come by. With a modest target to run

down, the Stags fancied their chances of getting the job done – but the bat let them down as they were rolled for 165 with 10 overs of batting still in front of them. Jason Morrison fell in the first over, and then Callum Gallagher was back in the sheds three balls later with both failing to get a run on the board. A steady partnership between Sam Clark (31) and Des Kruger (22) solidified things a bit, but while both made starts, they were unable to push on and grab the big total that was required. Some late flurries from Harry Jones (35) and Morgan Gallagher (37) produced a bit of hope in the camp, but too many wickets fell cheaply, and Tech were unable to get close to reaching the required 202. Pleasant Point are now two wins clear on the standings with an unbeaten record – but again Tech will feel like they are quite capable of beating them, having had two good opportunities this season. Two rounds remain in the competition before the Christmas break, with both sides away from home this weekend. Tech will take on Celtic in Timaru while Allenton get a trip out to Pleasant Point.

Local bowlers dominate Timaru tournament Matt Markham Mid Canterbury indoor bowling names dominated proceedings at the annual Timaru Christmas tournament at the South Canterbury Indoor Bowls stadium on the weekend. The annual event, in which a number of local players travel south to compete, saw 18 teams take to the mats in the off season for the last official act of the year, and it was an Ashburton domination. Playing three rounds of fours in the morning and then a further three games in the afternoon, the tournament was won by Martin and Jenny Nordqvist along with Rowena Mackenzie and Louise Mason. The quartet won all six of their games

during the day and were the only team not to taste defeat. Second placing went to Grant Wilson, Maureen Eaden, Joyce Cleghorn and Helen Rennie who finished the day with five wins from their six matches. The indoor bowls season was cut short due to the Covid lockdown in August, with many major events on the calendar either cancelled or postponed. At the New Zealand Indoor Bowls AGM on the weekend, it was decided that the pinnacle of the sport at a representative level, the Welch Trophy – which Ashburton qualified to attend – will be held next season. Ashburton won their way through to the event by winning the zone playoff for the Paterson trophy against Canterbury, Golden Bay Motueka, Marlborough, Nelson and the West Coast in Nelson in July. The event was originally set to be held in Westport, but players arrived to a state of emergency due to flooding, and the event was postponed.
