SHOP smart SHOP loca Weaving their own magic Malcolm Hopwood If you’re looking for an inspiring Mid Canterbury business success story, and a local family company taking on the world, then look no further than Ashford Handicrafts. Founded in 1934, Ashford’s has become a world leader in the manufacture of quality spinning wheels, weaving looms and textile equipment Incredibly, their loyal team have produced more than 900,000 wheels and looms and they’ve done it from little old Ashburton, with a retail craft shop and factory on its site and another mill in Milton, South Otago. The Ashford’s crew certainly know the value of local support and having a community behind them. That’s why Ashford’s director James Ashford, who with his husband David Lester, bought the business last year off his parents Elizabeth and Richard Ashford, is a big supporter of the Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign. The campaign aims to get more locals to shop in Ashburton to help keep those businesses going after a horror 12 to 24-month trading period because of Covid-19 and CBD development work. But the campaign also aims to promote all the great things about living and working in Ashburton and to show anything was possible. And Lester knows there’s much to celebrate in Ashburton, especially with its unique blend of local businesses and national chains, which were the lifeblood of the town. Lester and his team were also
Ashford Handcrafts’ directors James Ashford (left) and David Lester. “We’re delighted our products are contributing to people’s creative outlets.’’ living proof that challenges were actually opportunities for locally-based firms. While many Mid Canterbury businesses have been rationalising staff and reducing production during the never ending Covid-19 pandemic, Ashford’s has been bucking the trend. Lester said more people had become engaged in hobby crafts while stuck at home both in New Zealand and overseas during lockdown and restricted movement periods. “People are using their spare time creatively and we’re noticing a younger demographic coming to purchase,” Lester said. “We’re delighted our products are contributing to people’s cre-

ative outlets.’’ That uptake in hobby crafts work had resulted in a greater demand for wool, weaving looms and spinning wheels. The United States was Ashford’s biggest market, selling product to about 450 independent retailers. Since the pandemic began, the number of outlets has risen to over 520. “Every week I get a new store applying to stock our merchandise and, if they meet our criteria, we approve,” he said. “We’re delighted to be busy. It’s a good problem to have.” In recent months, Ashford’s has partnered with new retailers in Portugal, Lithuania, Spain, Slovakia, Poland and Israel. “Currently our production is
fully booked until March 2022. That means product we sell out of today will not be made and available again until March,” he said. To meet demand, Ashford’s has installed three additional CNC routers (computer-controlled woodworking machines) and have ordered a fourth from Italy. The machines make all the loom and spinning wheel components, which are then flatpacked and sent overseas. “They increase our capacity and allow for improved efficiency,” said Lester, who added that Ashford’s had also increased staff numbers by five to 45. “Currently we’re as busy as we’ve ever been.”
Like many businesses, coping with goods and product supply issues has been a challenge. Components for weaving looms and beach hardwood for manufacture have been delayed for upwards of two months and exports can double the time to reach their destination. But, like everything, the Ashford’s team is approaching that challenge with the same frame of mind that has helped the business be such a success. “It’s hectic trying to keep everyone happy and we’re increasing production as much as we can,” Lester said. “Our whole staff is working hard to meet demand for our spinning and weaving equipment around the world.”

The shows will go on
From the stage to the backroom for Farr Maddison Gourlay It started with a love and appreciation for the performing arts and now it’s become a fulltime management career. That’s the way it’s been for Roger Farr, who has managed the Ashburton Trust Event Centre for the past 13 years. The opportunity to do so emerged when the event centre building was built in 2008. Farr, who was part of the committee, decided to take on the challenge of running the centre.
“
“Long may it continue.” One of the big performances that Farr has enjoyed the most was Les Misérables, one of the world’s best-loved pieces of musical theatre. Farr is very involved with the behind-the-scenes operation of shows, including working lighting and sound. Farr’s family have always been connected with the event centre too, with his children performing on stage in their younger years growing up in Ashburton. “In a small town like this, we all rely on each other,” Farr said. “The fact this is a multi-purpose building, and not just a theatre, has been good for the community. “It brings more events, and
We have had some big acts come here, but it is amazing to see the amazing talent that we have in this town. Long may it continue.
Now, over a decade later, Farr has shown no signs of stopping. “I have always been involved in theatre growing up. I was in my first show when I was nine,” Farr said. “The Ashburton Trust Event Centre brings a lot to this district being a multi-purpose building, not just a theatre.” Before Covid-19 hit, the event centre hosted many international and national acts, but a highlight for Farr has always been the local talent. “We have had some big acts come here, but it is amazing to see the amazing talent that we have in this town,” he said.
events help other businesses.” Covid has put stress on many businesses like the event centre, which has not been able to rely on as many international gigs. Fortunately, local theatre companies have supported the venue. And that’s why Farr loves the Ashburton Guardian’s community boosting-campaign Shop Smart Shop Local Put your $ Where your Heart Is campaign. Because, he said, it was important for locals to support locals. The success and reliance on local support for the Ashburton Trust Event Centre is well and truly evidence of that.

Methven growth plans doubted proach, has been largely slated as a failure with more than halfa-million New Zealanders failing to complete the census. Council incorporated other figures around historical trends, resource consent numbers and “factors that affect population change such as suburb life cycle” into its population modelling. Millions of dollars are being spent by council on upgrading the area’s water infrastructure. “Council is spending a reasonable amount of money up in Methven and if the numbers aren’t right . . . they’ll be corrected as time goes on,” Mayor Brown said. “In two years’ time when we do the [Long Term Plan].” The Methven population is currently estimated at 1941 according to council.
Adam Burns Methven’s population is climbing at an extraordinary rate and is expected to exceed a target more than 25 years ahead of what had previously been predicted by the Ashburton District Council. The development boom has wormed into the alpine town with more than 300 residential sections snapped up in recent times, across a total of five developments. Of the 314 sections developed over the past few years, only eight are available. “She’s all go up there,” Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown said. The Methven Community Board made a presentation to councillors last week around activity in the town. Although sections had sold quickly, many landowners were
struggling to find builders. Council had forecast Methven’s population to climb to 2411 by 2048 in its latest long-term plan unveiled earlier this year. Community board chairman Dan McLaughlin believed it was
set to reach this number by 2023. For this year’s 2021-31 longterm plan, council utilised data from 2013 due to delays from Stats NZ with the 2018 data. “Anyone who has used that data (census), it’s frustrating, it’s
so wrong,” he said. “This was the concern for the people in Methven, if you’re using this data for your infrastructure for the next 27 years.” The 2018 Census, the first time Stats NZ used a digital-first ap-

Presents are being accepted up until 3pm on Friday, December 24. Methven Summer School confirms 2022 courses Malcolm Hopwood Artisan bread making is in, but building a rotating compost bin is out. The Methven Summer School confirmed its courses this week for its annual event from January 5-10 next year. Co-ordinator, Julia Papek, said the majority of last year’s popular courses are returning, but four have been cancelled due to insufficient numbers. They are building a rotating compost bin, glass fusing, preparing and cooking fish and singing for everybody. Those courses that have had a positive response includes cheese, sausage and bread making, upholstery, photography, painting, golf with a professional instructor and instant journalism. So far 165 people are attending the summer school, but Papek will receive enrolments up until the day before the school starts. She said numbers are slightly down on previous years due to Covid uncertainty but are picking up now and “we’re happy with the way enrolments are trending”. “We’re looking forward to another successful, inspiring and educational event,” she said. She said that because the summer school takes place at Mount Hutt College, all participants, tutors, committee members, and volunteers must have vaccination passes. “Anyone entering Mount Hutt College is required to have a vaccination passport,” she said.

Free hotel mini-break for health workers Terrace Downs Resort is one of 140 hotels around New Zealand offering health workers a free mini-break. The Hotel Council Aotearoa (HCA) has launched a Gift A Room campaign which is rewarding health workers helping to keep Kiwis safe during New Zealand’s Covid-19 recovery. HCA has partnered with the New Zealand Nurses’ Organisation (NZNO) and is gifting more than 300 room nights to members comprising nurses, health care assistants, kamahi hauora (Maori health workers) and midwives. HCA’s strategic director, James Doolan, said health workers have been in the frontline and done the hard yards during the Covid pandemic.
“Our Gift A Room campaign is a way for HCA to support those in other sectors who’ve been working timelessly and deserve as much-needed break,” he said. NZNO acting chief executive, Mairi Lucas said the past two years have taken a toll and “come at a close personal cost to many of our members, so it’s heart-warming to be able to give some of them a well-deserved break”. The hotel stays will be awarded through a competition-based draw. Winning NZSO members can choose which destination and hotel they’d like for their nights away between January 1 and June 30 next year, excluding public holidays.

Second bridge ‘urgent’ Adam Burns Recovery managers for the historic Canterbury floods believe a second bridge over the Ashburton River is critical and is now pressing the Government for the matter to be taken seriously. A Civil Defence management committee, made up of several mayors throughout Canterbury, is urging for planning and construction on a second bridge over the Ashburton River to be incorporated immediately into Waka Kotahi’s upcoming roading programmes and that it receives the “appropriate funding”. A report by Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) regional emergency principal advisor Robert Rouse was presented at a recent committee meeting, advocating for resolution to “strategic issues” arising from the May floods. The “fragility and vulnerability” of both the State Highway 1 corridor and bridge, alongside inland detours warranted an urgent resolution, the report said. “The recovery team has identified either the replacement of the existing SH1 bridge across the Ashburton River or the construction of a second bridge as an urgent and critical project reducing
Civil Defence recovery managers believe a second State Highway bridge over the Ashburton River is urgent. the threats and consequences arising from inevitable future extreme weather and flooding events”. The vulnerabilities also extended to inland detour routes and the strain on a local network to provide a reliable and available alternative to state highways during and after an extreme weather event. “Local roads and bridges are not able to operate at the same level as a state highway and are not maintained or upgraded to the same
standard as the state highway.” The matters have now been raised by both recovery managers and committee chairperson Lianne Dalziel with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Transport Minister Michael Wood and NZTA chief executive Nicole Rosie. The report recommendations were initally raised with both NZTA and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), but Rouse said they received “lightweight” responses.

The May 30-31 flood event wreaked havoc throughout Canterbury and also caused foundational damage to the 90-year-old Ashburton Bridge. The State Highway 1 overpass was closed for two days in the aftermath of the event, effectively cutting off access between the upper and lower South Island. It prompted appeals from Mid Canterbury’s community leaders to expedite plans for a second bridge and for the Government
to provide a significant portion of funding on the stuttering project. The Ashburton District Council has been in the process of preparing a strategic business case on a second urban bridge to be presented to NZTA.

People's Choice finalists revealed The five finalists in the ANZ Business of the Year Awards People's Choice in Retail category have been announced.
Just over 500 votes were cast when the voting period ended on 30 November and the top five (in no particular order) are The Stork Network, Big Al’s, Stoked Cycles, Hyundai Mid Canterbury and Garage Gym.
The Ministry of Health has information on the Unite against Covid-19 website to help families plan for covid in their household and it includes a planning checklist, similar to other personal emergency plans.
Ashburton District Council is partnering with ANZ and Ri Ra Events to host the inaugural awards, which aim to recognise and promote local business excellence.
“It has been great to see people voting for their favourite business or outlet and it turned out to be as close as it can get. “There were 11 businesses in the category and they were a real variety, all with good voting support. We look forward to honouring the finalists and winners of all the different categories at the awards evening next year.” The ANZ Business of the Year Awards also feature an award for a future business leader and categories for primary industries, export, tourism, manufacturing, not-for-profit and technology and innovation. A supreme winner will be decided by Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown. Mayor Brown said the district’s business community had dealt with a lot in the past two years.

Council Strategy and Compliance Group Manager Jane Donaldson said everyone, whether they were vaccinated or unvaccinated, should prepare for what they needed if they contracted Covid-19. “Covid has had quite an impact and forced many to rethink how they connect with customers. “It is only a matter of time before a positive case of Covid-19 is in our community. Most people will have a mild to moderate illness, and will fully recover in their own home. For those who need help, the healthcare system will always be available. “Being ready for getting Covid-19 is about making sure you and your household have a plan and know what to do. Joining the Three Waters group action Ashburton District Council has decided to join other councils around the country to oppose the Government’s planned Three Waters Reform – we are also suggesting an alternative.
councils in a campaign to make the Government change its mind. The cost of this action will be $15,000 for us, but it will be money well spent as we have deep concerns about the reforms. We know the people who live in this district also have concerns.
We all agree that there are challenges facing drinking water, wastewater and stormwater and most councils could do better in that space.
The effect of the Government’s decision to mandate the reforms has essentially prevented our community from providing formal feedback to Council and influencing any decision to opt out or not. It is a loss of local democracy.
But we don’t believe in what the Government has planned. It wants to go ahead with legislation that will compel councils to transfer their Three Waters assets into the ownership and/ or operational control of four separate water entities. Ashburton’s assets would go to an entity covering most of the South Island. So we are joining a large group of 1

We have put a number of questions to the Government, as it asked us to do, but we have heard nothing back. We are worried about the financial assumptions and data used by the people who have penned the reforms. By joining with other councils, we hope to generate enough political pressure on the Government for it to
consider altering its decision. There is a precedent for a reversal – remember the cycle bridge over Auckland harbour? One possible course of action is an application to the High Court for a declaratory judgement which sets out the ownership of water infrastructure assets and what rights and privileges go with that ownership. Government says councils will still own their Three Waters assets, even though they will be transferred to the new entities and we will have none of the rights you would expect an owner to have. While Government has set up a Working Group to consider the way accountability, representation and transparency are set up in the new structure, there is no certainty of significant alteration to the reform proposals and Council wants to do all it can in the meantime.
We believe an alternative could be a regulatory framework designed to incentivise change led by asset owners, to meet regulatory outcomes. This is the usual approach in the utilities sector. A second alternative could be to promote the same approach as we have for roading, which is a local Government/central Government partnership … like the Waka Kotahi NZTA model, where council manages the assets with funding support from the Crown and investment decided on the merits of various business cases. Fence your swimming pool Parking spaces being monitored Ashburton District Council is reminding pool owners to check gate latches and compliance with fencing rules ahead of summer.
The CBD’s new in-ground parking sensors might be stuck in Auckland, but Ashburton District Council parking wardens are still making sure motorists are abiding by parking limits, especially in the busy lead-up to Christmas.
The fencing rules apply to permanent and portable or temporary swimming pools, capable of holding water more than 40cm deep. Council has 558 registered pools on its books and inspects them once every three years. Strategy and Compliance Group Manager Jane Donaldson said there was generally good compliance, with just the odd bit of maintenance required on the gate latch or self-closer. “An interesting thing that sometimes catches people out is that any unclimbable shrubs or trees that were beside a fence three years ago may have grown to be climbable, so young children have a means of getting into a pool area. “Portable or temporary swimming pools or paddling pools are a separate concern because the people who buy them or use them may not realise they also have to comply with fencing requirements.” If you’re buying a portable pool, it has to comply with exactly the same rules as a permanent pool if it can hold more than 40cm deep of water. Even if you only partially fill it, that doesn’t make it compliant. Pool retailers are legally required to inform
the purchaser that fencing is required and generally this is printed on the pool or pool packaging. Ms Donaldson said the fencing rules were for safety reasons and to prevent accidental drowning. “Under the Building (Pools) Amendment Act that came into effect on 1 January 2017, portable pools are treated in the same way as other residential pools. They must have barriers to stop children under five from accessing them. “We don’t want the tragedy of a child being lost because of an unfenced pool.” Find out more about swimming and spa pool safety at Council's website, ashburtondc.govt.nz.
Strategy and Compliance Group Manager Jane Donaldson said people’s usual parking habits had been disrupted by CBD streetscape work over the past 24 months, but now that the project is nearly finished, the parking limit signs were back up. “There was some all-day overstaying during the redevelopment, mainly due to the lack of signage, but that has lessened. There is still an issue with motorists generally overstaying their limit though.” Parking wardens are paying attention to all areas of the CBD that have timed parking and issuing infringements where necessary. Motorists are allowed one-hour free parking in most of the CBD, while the outer edges vary from 60 to 120 minutes. Fines for those caught overstaying range from $12 to $42, depending on how long the vehicle has overstayed. Motorists parking illegally at a bus stop can expect a $40 fine, while those illegally in a mobility park face a $150 fine.

Ya-Yas serenade street with Sweet Caroline Malcolm Hopwood
Ashburton women’s group, the Ya-Yas, challenged themselves this week before going to Christmas dinner. The Ya-Yas, inspired by the book, the Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, decided to learn to sing as their activity before rewarding themselves with dinner and drinks. They set two hours aside to learn to breathe, move, exercise, harmonise and sing Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline. Singing teacher, Kathi Craig MNZM, created Waiata and Wine and put them through their paces before rewarding them all with a certificate and a glass of bubbly. The Ya-Yas were established in 2000 as an opportunity for Ashburton women to meet monthly, share books and socially catch up. “It was great fun, we had no inhibitions,” said organiser and foundation member, Jenny McDonald. “We’ll be going viral on YouTube with Sweet Caroline shortly.”
SHORT & SHARP Meningitis petition The meningitis petition fronted by Ashburton couple, Claire and Gerard Rushton, won’t be presented to parliament until next year. National’s spokesperson for health, Dr Shane Reti, intended to present it this year, but now believes it will get “better profile in the new year”. He also considers there’s too many distractions in parliament at the moment. The petition, which received 6357 signatures, calls for vaccination against all types of meningococcal disease.
Post deadline The NZ Post cut-off dates for sending Christmas presents domestically are fast approaching, with deadlines for parcels sent Economy by Thursday, December 16, and parcels sent by Courier by Monday, December 20. North Island bias doesn’t sit well
H
ouston, we have a problem. Actually, newly elected National Party leader Christopher Luxon has the problem. Already, you say? Absolutely, though it’s certainly not anything as serious, or related to that popular but erroneous quotation from radio communications between an Apollo 13 astronaut and the NASA Mission Control Centre (in Houston), when an explosion crippled their spacecraft a tick over 50 years ago. Luxon’s spacecraft hasn’t even got out of the garage and his problem is part inherited, part his own doing. I’m talking about his first reshuffle of the National Party caucus and the glaringly obvious big geographical black hole. That black hole is more commonly known as the South Island.
Daryl Holden Because the apparent lack of South Island talent has been well and truly illustrated in Luxon’s caucus selections, with only four from the mainland in that top 20. Apart from Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey, who is now ranked eighth, the others only just sneak inside the top 20. Dunedin list MP Michael Woodhouse, one of the biggest losers from the reshuffle, is the sole representative from Otago and Southland and is ranked 18th after plummeting from fourth spot. The other southern members
are Kaikoura’s Stuart Smith and Christchurch list MP Gerry Brownlee, ranked 16th and 17th respectively.
he has only technically ranked 20 of his MPs – his shadow Cabinet, if you like – saying the other 13 were floating around unranked
is a smart man and will be well “ Luxon aware of the geographic disparity of his
shadow cabinet. As it stands, it has a clear North Island bias, which does him, his party and probably the country no good whatsoever.
Just missing out on the top 20 by one position is Waitaki’s Jacqui Dean, who, as we know, was connected to the Judith Collins’ leadership debacle that ended with Luxon in charge. Luxon has quite cleverly said
but listed in order of seniority. And that’s why you should probably not read too much into the fact that fellow South Island MPs Nicola Grigg, Joseph Mooney and Penny Simmonds have been listed in spots 30 to 32
in his 33-strong team. But, seriously, Luxon’s selections are obviously a consequence of the way the country voted at the last election when National got caned in the South Island, failing to win enough seats. Luxon is a smart man and will be well aware of the geographic disparity of his shadow cabinet. As it stands, it has a clear North Island bias, which does him, his party and probably the country no good whatsoever. So what to do now? Quite clearly one of the many challenges facing Luxon is the rather urgent need to identify and develop South Island talent before the 2023 election. He needs it and so, too, does the South Island. Let’s hope the message gets through, Houston.

Luxon’s election National’s reset Nicola Grigg SELWYN MP
I
t has been such a thrill to see my friend and class of 2020 colleague, Christopher Luxon, elected as the new leader of the National Party. I know Chris to be a man of deep integrity, enormous intelligence, drive and discipline. He is also warm, engaging and kind. He is genuinely interested in people and has spent years thinking about the levers government can pull to make real change to improve lives. Like me, Chris was elected after one of the National Party’s worst results ever. It was a tough campaign, to say the least. But his election – as well as that of deputy leader, Nicola Willis – is our reset. As he said in his first speech to media last week, we are drawing a line under the events of the last four years, and we are putting them behind us. Because we must. New Zealand needs a high functioning National Party. The more time I spend in this job, meeting families and businesses across mid Canterbury, the more I see and hear how much people want the National Party to do well. New Zealand is at a critical cross-roads as we grapple with – and emerge from – a global pandemic. You’ll have noticed that we are paying more at the checkout and the petrol pump, house
Chris Luxon and Nicola Willis pushing National’s reset button. prices are rising faster than anyone predicted, someone you love might not be home for Christmas because they’re one of a million New Zealanders stranded offshore, you might resent vaccination mandates forced on you because the Government’s slow response to Covid has left us with little other choice. You may have lost your job and can’t find another, or you
may own a business and can’t find staff. Whatever your frustration, I can assure you, hundreds of thousands of others are feeling the same. So, it seems to me that the choice for New Zealanders is to either continue to pursue the pathway of mediocrity that we are on, or, we can choose to build a more confident, aspirational and prosperous future.
Your say Now, more than ever, New Zealand needs the National Party to offer them hope, ambition and drive to meet the challenges of the coming decade. If you are one of the 413,000 voters who moved away from us in the 2020 election, watch this space – National is back. National’s Nicola Grigg grew up in Mt Somers and is currently the Selwyn MP.
Do you agree with the view of National’s Nicola Grigg? Be part of the debate. Have your say. Tell us what you think in less than 200 words by emailing: editor@ theguardian.co.nz

Legends to come together for unique race meeting Matt Markham With close to 10,000 wins among them, they are three of the biggest names in harness racing. And the Methven Trotting Club is bringing them all together. Tony Herlihy, Maurice McKendry and Ricky May are the three most successful harness racing drivers in New Zealand of all time, and early next year all
three will come to Mid Canterbury to compete at a special race meeting to celebrate the three legends of the sulky. The club will host all three drivers at their meeting on January 30, with six carded races to see them all competing on the three highest rated horses in each race across the day’s programme. Points will be handed out from each race in the series, with the driver obtaining the most points crowned the champion of the day. “It’s different,
but it’s going to be some battle and a bit of fun,” Methven Trotting Club committee member and driver, May said of the upcoming series. Herlihy is closing in on 3600 wins in the sulky, McKendry has racked up more than 3300, and May reached the magic mark earlier this year. The idea was first mooted by Michael Heenan, and it’s gained traction since, with Harness Racing New Zealand getting on board to see the day go ahead.
For McKendry and May it’s very much a home town affair, as both are Methven boys, with May still residing in the area and McKendry now based in the North Island, but Herlihy is no stranger to the Mt Harding track either, having driven there on a number of occasions. A decade ago, the Methven club established that Herlihy had never driven a winner on the Methven track, so they invited him down as a guest driver for two years to try and break that anomaly. He eventually gained success
with Jackaroo Bromac for Mark Jones. Methven Trotting Club president, Carl Markham, said the idea was all about bringing something extra to the meeting. “It’s going to be quite exciting; we are all about thinking outside the square, and anything that can create some interest and turnover has to be a good thing.” It is hoped the TAB bookmakers will come on board and offer up some unique betting options for the day to help entice further interest and support for the initiative.
Legends of the harness racing game in New Zealand, Tony Herlihy, Ricky May and Maurice McKendry will be gracing the Methven track at a special meeting early next year.

Ashburton Bowling Club is very pleased to report that the registration of players’ Vaccine Passes before play began at our Friday Triples on the 3rd, went off like clockwork! Thank you to all our visitors to the Club for their efficient co-operation in having the information required readily to hand. We started on time seamlessly! Ashburton Golf Club
Well, what an amazing week we just had, the golf club was buzzing and I do not think it could have gone any better. Well perhaps with a home team victory. The weather was perfect for golf every day. The course was in its “best ever” condition. NZ Golf and the players could not speak any higher about it. Our volunteers performed with superhuman abilities, well above and beyond what was expected. The talk from NZ Golf beforehand was this was going to be the last visit to a “rural” setting, but I seriously believe they will have to re-assess after the tournament that was put on. I will attempt to do a few thank you’s; there are so many, so please do not think badly if I miss some. Firstly Ben, Josh, Dave, Neil and all their helpers for putting out such a beautiful course. Gaby and Brent for their work with the scoreboards, Robbie, Peter and Rosco for their sterling efforts on the driving range. Kevin, Bunge and Barry on trundler and club storage. Buck and his army of scorers, Marilyn and Paul for keeping everyone fed, Sonia for keeping them watered. All of the ball spotters. Karen and Hamish for the very useful welcome packs that were well received. Jacquie for her great work around the cocktail evening that, sadly, had to be cancelled due to restrictions. Then finally, Mr perpetual motion Bruce Day. I don’t think Bruce sat down at all last week, arriving at 6.30 every morning and usually the last to leave. Thank you one and all, you did yourselves, your golf club and your town, proud.
We are looking forward to hosting the Club’s 10th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday March 27, so if you have been part of the Club in the last decade please keep this date free. More information will be available early next year. The Club winds up the year with games and afternoon tea on Sunday 12 December. Our games will start again at 1pm on Tuesday January 11, at 115 Racecourse Road. In closing we wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and best wishes for a safe New Year.

Ashburton Inner Wheel
Many members and some partners enjoyed a delicious meal on a beautiful evening, in the exquisite grounds of Carol and Gary Haskett’s garden, the evening before the rain started. As members arrived we were given a warm welcome with a pre-dinner drink meeting up with friends with lots of chatter. The sight outside of tables set under the trees with starched white cloths certainly indicated the importance of the Christmas dinner, which when served proved to be absolutely delicious. In between courses the Ukelele group entertained us with a few Christmas songs, which certainly had been practised to perfection. This group has only been going for a year and have certainly worked hard to present such a polished performance. Santa made a surprise appearance wishing everyone a happy Christmas before our President Carolyn thanked the Hasketts for their hospitality and wished everyone the blessings of the season.
Ashburton MSA Petanque
Despite the pandemic, we have had a very busy year of tournaments both in town and further afield with a lot of success. The last one of the year was the Tristar held in Wellington recently, where the Southern Region were victorious, Canterbury a close second, and the hosts Wellington third and fourth respectively. The Canterbury team consisted of three of our players, Neville and Karen Bensdorp and Richard Browne, along with three others from Christchurch. Players are selected to be in these teams which involves a lot of commitment to the game. The Club have recently produced a booklet with a calendar of events for 2022 for its members, and also a pamphlet which you will find in various places around town soon. Please pick one up and make it your New Year resolution to try something different, you’ll enjoy the game and the friendly atmosphere.

Coast to Coast training working
Brad O’Brien’s Coast to Coast training programme paid dividends on Sunday, when he took the victory laurels in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s, McIntosh Group, 57km handicap event around the Blackbridge block. It was a hard fought win, decided on the line after a tight bunch sprint to the finish. O’Brien’s victory saw him lift the Eddie Ward Shield. Doug Coley will be happy with his day’s work, putting in a solid effort to secure the second place spoils. Roger Wilson was rewarded for his recent hard work as well, stepping up onto the final podium position. Don Morrison was in the thick of the finish to claim fourth spot. Jono Nelson took fifth place, with sixth placegetter Tesh McIntosh awarded the Chris Ward Cup for first lady home. Craig Domigan continued his strong season securing
fastest time honours, riding the course in 79.31. Co-markers Kyle Gray and Glen Gould took second and third time. The juniors and division 2 contested a 19km handicap event. Back marker Mitch Brookland produced a great ride to get through the field and take the win, and in doing also lifted fastest time honours, covering the distance in 27.09. Lochlan Hall found the line strongly to take the second place spoils, with Olivia Ewing producing a strong effort in third place. Leah Reid, Charlotte Neal, and Isabella Inglis filled the top half dozen places. Alan Johns took the division 2 spoils from Ross Templeton, and Kerry Clough. Next week club titles will be up for grabs, raced over 64km around the Wakanui Beach block.

Lake Hood Slalom
Lake Hood Water Ski Club kick into full gear this weekend with the holding of the Lake Hood Slalom event. The tournament kicks off at 8am on Saturday morning, where some of the best on the water from here and afar will be in action as they look to work towards a big season. Entries for the event closed on Wednesday night, but anyone interested in learning more about the club and what it offers can pop on down during the course of the tournament on the eastern edges of Lake Hood.
Country MC win again Country Mid Canterbury’s Division One tennis side kept their unbeaten run in Tennis Canterbury’s competition intact on the weekend with a four matches to two win over Edgeware on Sunday. Three singles victories and a doubles success kept the side’s hopes of pushing for top spot alive, as the season rapidly approaches the Christmas and New Year break.
Hawke Cup opener Mid Canterbury will begin their bid for one of New Zealand cricket’s greatest prizes, the Hawke Cup, this weekend. The side will travel to Timaru to take on South Canterbury in the first of four clashes for the season. The side have the advantage of having already beaten their neighbours this season in a pre-season clash for the Ron Biggar Memorial. After this weekend’s clash the side doesn’t play again until January 15, when they host Southland in Ashburton. Their third match is against Otago Country in Alexandra and then the fourth against North Otago at home – both matches are in February.

Holly-Jayne Feutz took out the 16/18 Girls’ title at the Mid Canterbury Junior Age Group Championships.
The cream rose to the top of the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on the weekend in the annual Mid Canterbury Junior Age Group Championships for this season. Close to 50 local players took to the courts over both Friday afternoon and Saturday for the event, with 14 separate titles competed for and won. A closed association tournament for just Mid Canterbury registered players, the numbers for this year’s tournament were up slightly on those who played last season – a strong nod towards the work being done by Mid Canterbury tennis to keep young players out on the court and playing the game. The weekend’s fixtures ran as close to as could be expected in terms of results, with many of the frequent and regular names on results sheets from across all forms of competition showing their wares in a highly-competitive arena against their peers. In singles action, three players made it back-to-back titles with Riley Breen, Holly-Jayne Feutz and Tyler Leonard all picking up victories to follow on from last year while in the doubles Breen, Josh Gilbert, Jake Parsons, Feutz and Christine Van Rooyen also grabbed success, the same as 12 months ago.
Breen and Gilbert, who were recently crowned South Island schools’ champions picked up separate singles titles. Josh won the 12 and Under Boys’ title while Riley won the next grade up. They combined last year to win the 12 and Under doubles, but despite being in separate grades this year, still managed to each win. Josh won with Jamie King in the 12 and Under category, while Riley won with Ashton Cromie in the next level up. The Feutz family had plenty to smile about too, with a singles double courtesy of Libby and Holly-Jayne in the 14 and Under and 16/18 singles respectively. Libby made it double delight by also adding a doubles title in her age group, which she won with Ashleigh Houston. No.1 seed in the 16/18 singles, Tyler Leonard was successful for the second year running. He beat Jake Parsons in a redhot field of players that also included Lachlan Adam and Oliver Bubb. He had to yield in the doubles however, with Adam and Parsons getting the wood over he and Bubb in an intriguing final. In youngsters matches, new names emerged with Raymond Yan winning the 9 and Under Boys’ Title, and Fraser Ellis the 10 and Under Prize.
Above right – Jake Parsons, along with Lachlan Adam, won the 16-18 Boys’ Doubles.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You have a strong sense for other people’s feelings, and it’s taxing for you to inhabit highly emotional environments. Even so, the rollercoaster beats being bored every time! TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’ll need to pick up a skill to resolve today’s problem. You learn fast, perhaps because the emotional stakes are high. These new abilities contribute to your awesomeness. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): It’s as though there’s a plot inside the plot. You not only understand the action; you understand what’s going on under the action, and that’s the level to engage with. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Your only opponent today is inside you – a persistent and unhelpful voice. Acknowledge it and set it free like an unqualified job applicant. “Thank you for applying. We’re going a different direction...” LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’re in an imaginative mood, and you will apply creativity to your love life. The one who is really in tune with you is practically a mind reader, and it’s nice that you don’t have to overstate things. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The right amount of space – that’s the magic ingredient that makes the dance of relationships work. Negotiating that space is best done through movement and tuning in to subtle cues (not words): LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): The attributes you want to infuse your life with exist in the people you adore, admire and study. You have the same qualities, though some have been muted. You’ll unmute and amplify them today. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Limiting beliefs are like tinted glasses that colour your whole view. Looking for the culprits “out there” won’t work. The light will pour in once you reach up and pull the problem from your own head. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The muscle of willpower is like other muscles. It needs a warmup, and there’s a period of peak performance before it gets fatigued. It would be silly to blame yourself for not having more of a finite quantity. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll make mischief, though not out of a desire for rebellion. You like to lighten the mood with playfulness that is the very effervescence of life. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Those who are not selfaware are also not going to be aware of you, and you are wise to set your expectations accordingly. At the art of calibrating your expectations, you are becoming an aficionado. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): An acute and nostalgic pang will accompany your thoughts about the gathering aspects of life, and you’ll spend time making grand plans for better eras.

Rural Content Editor The Ashburton Guardian, in association with NZ on Air, has an exciting unique new role for a reporter with a passion for agricultural issues and cultural engagement. The hours are fulltime for two years. Your focus would be covering farming issues in the wider Mid Canterbury region, supplying copy, photographs and, from time to time, video.
