Farmers ignore Covid-19 rules “Farmers can’t afford to get caught up in this. “It’s a huge impediment for farmers who have a harvest to do, milking to do, livestock to look after.” Clark also had a crack at Omicron epidemiology case modelling experts, which included a prediction of 50,000 cases daily. Those numbers, if they had eventuated, would have had damaging effects on all businesses, not just the agriculture sector. Clark said the modelling forecast was “just nuts’’. “If they’d got anywhere near the number of cases they were predicting, after a couple of weeks there wouldn’t be anyone at work. It is painfully obvious that this is all just being made up on the fly. “So, it’s a complete and utter shambles. Our isolation rules are far more draconian than Australia and even the Ministry of Health is saying that once cases get into the thousands, they will change the rules so you don’t have to isolate. “So, I completely understand why farmers will be doing everything they can, not to be tested.”

Pat Deavoll A Mid Canterbury agricultural leader says he “completely understands’’ farmers asking staff to deliberately avoid Covid-19 tests, even if they have symptoms. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president David Clark said he knew many farmers were actively encouraging staff not to get Covid tested if they showed signs of having the virus to avoid a potential stint in isolation that would put their working operations at risk. That same approach has reportedly emerged in Southland and Otago, where many farmers had even stopped contact tracing just in case they visited somewhere that had been exposed to the virus and would need to get tested and be unable to work. “I think this is irresponsible, but I can understand why they are doing this,” Clark said. “The reality is that there were

Their advice is about this mindset amongst quite vague and Dairy NZ’s advice is also vague. They are saying just farmers.’’ Clark said conflicting health take precautions and stay away advice was also confusing and from other staff. “The problem is if a farmer innot helping. “MPI is saying if you are feeling terprets the rules according to

avoidance is irresponsible, but underMPI and Dairy NZ, and someone from the Ministry of Health interprets them differently, a farmer could find themselves frogmarched off into MIQ for weeks.’’ Farming businesses would be severely compromised if staff had to self-isolate for 10 or 14 days, Clark said.

Reti challenges Govt on foreign doctors Malcolm Hopwood The Government is pre-occupied while 150 foreign doctors can’t find a position in New Zealand hospitals or private practice, claims National’s health spokesman, Dr Shane Reti. Dr Reti, in responding to problems encountered by Ashburton doctor, Tamryn Lindeboom, who’s being denied the opportunity to practise here, said, instead

of focusing on light rail and cycle bridges, the government should “wake up to the shortage of health workers in New Zealand”. Dr Reti held a Zoom meeting with 50 of the foreign doctors last Friday and addressed a range of their concerns. “I’m totally sympathetic to her (Dr Lindeboom’s) situation and I’m working with the collective of foreign doctors to address the problems she’s currently facing,” he said. “I don’t believe DHBs in New Zealand are fully staffed and there should be opportunities for foreign doctors who, like Dr Lindeboom, have passed their

exams and are available to practise here.” He explains New Zealand graduates receive funding from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) which helps their employment as post-graduate, year one doctors, and the same funding should be made available to foreign doctors. “This would financially assist DHBs to employ them,” he said. Qualified foreign doctors must first complete a post-graduate year in a New Zealand hospital but there are no jobs available. That means they can’t fill vacancies in GP practices around New Zealand.

Dr Reti said there used to be a general practice pathway within the post-graduate year, but that has been removed which prevents them working under supervision as GPs in private practice. He is arguing with the government that the pathway should be reinstated. “The government is now allowing essential workers to enter New Zealand to fill positions yet they have 150 doctors here that should be onboard first,” he said. Dr Reti is having on-going Zoom meetings with the collective and recommends Dr Lindeboom should join them to advance her case.

SHOP smart SHOP local MID CANTERBURY Where sugar meets creativity Sophie Cullen

Lili Haydon Sophie Cullen has always been a Canterbury girl but now she is known as the Mid Canterbury cake lady. From various Ashburton primary schools, to Geraldine for her secondary school education, Cullen has now settled in Mount Somers. She lives on a dairy farm with her partner, all while gaining a reputation for her delicious cake creations. Cullen’s main occupation is a teacher at Mount Hutt College, working in the technology department, specialising in graphics and architecture. “This is definitely a juggle for me as after work I am usually back at home in the kitchen baking and decorating cakes into the early hours of the morning,” Cullen said. About a year ago, Cullen decided to start sharing her beautiful cake designs on her Instagram account Alpine Cakes. The Instagram account has become a creative platform where she documents her artistic progression. “So many people have followed and supported the journey. Often offering advice, feedback and ordering cakes,” she said. Cullen has been interested in cake decorating ever since she was a teenager. “I always wanted to create something special for my friends.” The feeling of giving cakes to

friends and family and seeing their reactions was enough for Cullen to keep pursuing her passion in cake decorating. This is why Cullen jumped at the opportunity to further her cake mastery at the Methven Summer School cake course in 2020. The course helped strengthen her cake stacking and icing skills. Cullen has come a long way since then, and is taking it a little more seriously from just using colleagues and friends to taste test on. “I’ve made at least 10 wedding cakes now, which still blows my mind when I say that out loud.”

Cullen believes wedding cakes are special for more reasons than one. “Not only because they have such a wow factor, but also just the additional opportunities it gives you. I’ve been lucky enough to see plenty of beautiful venue locations, collaborate with local florists and use other NZ-owned businesses to design custom cake toppers,” Cullen said. Wedding cakes have come a long way from those traditional fruit mince and fondant covered designs. Cullen thinks this could have something to do with the growing online presence and acces-

sibility to knowledge around cake decorating from tutorials on YouTube to more and more television shows that specialise in the art of cake making. This year Cullen predicts there will be more alternative shapes in the base (bottom tier) such as hexagon shapes and that there will be more real florals incorporated into wedding cakes rather than the handmade fondant flowers that used to be so predominant. But Cullen knows there is some traditions you can’t beat. “I’ve always been a sucker for chocolate so will never go past a classic chocolate cake with some maple flavoured b u t t e rc re a m and chocolate ganache!” A relatively new trend which has been causing a stir in the cake industry has been Covid. Covid has made the job a little trickier due to people having to reschedule their weddings. That, in turn,

has increased demand in other months of the year which have not typically been as busy for Cullen. So you better get in line if you want one of Cullen’s famous Mid Canterbury cakes!

Toe-tally worried after wet tiles fall Maddison Gourlay

Ashburton’s multi-million dollar CBD upgrade may need a slippery when wet sign over new tiles after a local woman suffered a nasty fall. Kirsty McGregor was left with a horrid-looking purple and black toe after her fall, which could easily have been much worse. Now she’s warning others, especially older residents, to be careful when walking on the new, smooth tiles when it’s wet. And the Ashburton District Council has also admitted it would investigate what could be done to reduce the slipping risk. “I was walking, carrying things from the car park and then across the road (Burnett Street), and the tiles were slippery from the rain,” McGregor said. “I had a major slip and banged my toe against the curb.” McGregor, who works for an aged care facility, said her profession prompted her to let the public know. “I am just putting it out there to warn people. “Don’t get me wrong, I think the new CBD upgrade looks great.”

A smile but with a warning: Kirsty McGregor in the spot on Burnett Street where she slipped. PHOTO MADDISON GOURLAY McGregor’s concerns were matched by other members of the public, who have vented their worries. “I nearly went for a skate too a few weeks ago in the rain,” Jo Dickson said on Facebook.

Kim Watts said she was grateful for her son being there to save her. “Yes I slipped the other day. Lucky my giant son was there to catch me. They are very dangerous in the rain,” Watts said.

Another local woman, Tania Hooper, said she had slipped twice on the tiles after rain, but said “luckily I did not fall’’. “I emailed the council about the tiles being slippery after the rain, also with the concern of

older people. The reply was they were all up to standard,” Hooper said. Ashburton District Council’s infrastructure services group manager, Neil McCann, said they had received two complaints about tiles becoming slippery when wet. “One, near the waterfall, and the other one, near the public toilets on East Street,’’ he said. “Although these particular tiles are commonly used in other similar environments in New Zealand towns, such as Christchurch and Dunedin, we are investigating what we can do to reduce the slipping risk when wet.’’

CBD redevelopment ‘on time, on budget’ Jonathan Leask Ashburton’s CBD redevelopment project will be completed on time and on budget. That being the new time and new budget. At last week’s Council Activity Briefings, councillor Angus McKay congratulated the infrastructure services team for delivering the project on time and on budget. However, councillor John Falloon queried that assessment as he said the original budget for the redevelopment was $15 million plus a contingency sum of 10 per cent.

“That would take the value of the project to $16.5m,” Falloon said. “Now we are at a financial completion of 95 per cent and so far we have spent $17,126,641.” He said the other five per cent will take the total project cost over $18m. Infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann said that during the course of the project, the council had approved additional contingency to a total of 20 per cent “to accommodate all those extra costs” from scope changes and delays. “We have maintained total expenditure of the contract under the approved contingency amount which is around about the $18m figure.” McCann said once the costs are finalised upon full completion he

would present that to council in March, but was adamant it would be under budget. “It will be under the total approved budget, including the contingencies that took into account those extra scope changes and delays due to Covid. The overall project has been completed, in November, except for the installation of the parking sensors, which are expected to be installed by March. A snag list has been prepared detailing the minor repairs that are required by the contractors, Tru-Line Civil, that are being addressed this month.

Bald Barber, the private society Maddison Gourlay

An Ashburton businessman, frustrated by Covid-19 restrictions, is threatening to take the New Zealand Government to court for $5 million. Jeff Swindley, who owns the Bald Barber hairdressing business in Ashburton, told the Guardian he has three lawyers working on his case. He was not prepared to be interviewed fully by the Guardian, but in a letter to the editor in an Allied Press publication he wrote that he had now set up his business as a private society in which customers would be known as members. It was not known if the Government’s vaccination and facemask-wearing requirements for close proximity businesses were being followed. Swindley wrote that he had been forced into operating under the Government’s traffic light system, “which I refuse to be part of”. “It is unlawful.” He confirmed he had been visited by the police and WorkSafe, who warned an infringement notice may be coming. But Swindley said the visits happened because of “unfounded complaints laid against me for perceived breaches’’. “WorkSafe were going back to their legal team to get further advice,’’ Swindley said. “I myself have sought both legal and wise counsel and have come to the decision that any infringement notice that has been given is unlawful and amounts to extortion.’’ He said he would seek damages of $5

That is one dollar for every New Zealander that has been deceived under this legislation. This is a public declaration of my intent,” Swindley said.

The Guardian wanted to ask how he would serve notice to the Government – given that it was highly unusual. But he did not take up multiple interview opportunities to share his full story and concerns with the community. WorkSafe has confirmed they have been in touch with Swindley and that his Bald Barber business still had regulatory

Velvet season goes well Pat Deavoll The velvet season has gone well for brothers Simon and Hamish Guild of High Peak Station in the head of the Selwyn River. Hamish Guild said the season had been “pretty solid” despite Covid disruptions. “The weighted average has probably increased throughout the season and is above our budgeted expectations,” he said. “And I guess that budget was potentially predicting a fair bit of variability.” Deer Industry New Zealand (DINZ) CEO Innes Moffat said the velveting season had gone “pretty well” although there were concerns for Mid Canterbury farmers coming out of the floods with a squeeze on feed. “But across Mid Canterbury production has gone well with feed being adequate,” he said.

Simon (left) and Hamish Guild of High Peak Station have had a blinder of a velvet season with prices above budgeted expectations. PHOTO HIGH PEAK STATION The velvet sector is reliant on sales to the Republic of Korea and Mainland China. “We entered the year with trepidation as to how those economies were impacted by Covid and around the logistics of shipping of goods to those economies,” Moffat said.

“But demand from both countries has been very strong. The prices our buyers have offered farmers have steadily improved over the course of the season from initially being on par with last year and ending the year 15 to 20 per cent above.” The price of velvet depended on

grade, but farmers producing Super-A grade were getting $120 to $130 a kilogram. “The exporters are certainly experiencing disruption getting containers booked onto ships and the product already exported getting clearance into Mainland China with a couple of the main sea-

ports being shut down because of Covid restrictions,” Moffat said. “But buyers have been happy to secure supplies from farmers and then deal with the logistics as they can.” “Velvet antler is a remarkable thing. Its growth is stimulated by the amount of sunshine in a day,” Moffat said. “The velvet growing season has pretty much finished now. You don’t want to be handling stags as they enter the roar. They are competing against each other as they come into the mating season – the antlers harden off and become pretty dangerous weapons.” Predictions for next year? The people who are buying our velvet want more of it. There is a growing demand for natural medicine in China and Korea, Moffat said. It’s seen as preventative medicine, to boost the immune system and promote health. “Whilst DINZ has not been making any claims for the efficacy against Covid, deer velvet has been pretty popular in these countries.”

Giant fish screen nearing completion Pat Deavoll A giant state-of-the-art fish screen near the Rangitata River will be finished soon as part of an $18 million project to protect salmon, trout, and native fish in the river.

The fish screen was commissioned by Mid Canterbury’s largest water supply company Rangitata Diversion Race Management Ltd (RDRML) and the mechanical screen was built in stages in Australia. Ashburton company Grant Hood Contracting was responsible for the construction. RDRML CEO Tony McCormick said the construction had gone very well and that site activity was expected to finish by the end of this month.

The state-of-the-art fish screen was built in Australia and costs $18m.

The screen has been built outside of the canal and will be connected to the main race in May.

“But because we have built the screen outside of the canal, we have to connect it to the main race and we are scheduled to do that in May,” he said. “That is the end of the irrigation season, and we always schedule major shutdowns between the irrigation and generation (of power) seasons. “At the moment there will be a two-week outage to connect in the canal.” Now the construction company was focusing on fences, roads, and completing the electricity needs, he said. The fish screen was the biggest in the country and amongst the top 10 biggest in the world for that type of facility, McCormick said. “The screens were manufactured in Victoria and really well managed despite the impact of Covid,” he said.

RDRML CEO Tony McCormick “Their delivery schedule was unimpeded which was pretty impressive.” McCormick said that come the end of May RDRML will start “watering up and wet-commissioning” the scheme. They will

then start testing to make sure the screen performs. “It has also been built to meet consent conditions, so we have to do some measurements to ensure it meets these for ECan,” McCormick said. “We have NIWA on board to help with the testing.” Come September RDRML will be conducting some live fish trials to ensure the fish can get safely through the screen and back to the river. RDRML intended to run several public days to give people a chance to look through the construction before it goes underwater. Even local schools might find this interesting from a science perspective, McCormick said. “It’s an opportunity to show people just what we have done up here.”

High cost of fertiliser likely to have a trickledown effect Pat Deavoll The skyrocketing cost of fertiliser doesn’t seem to have affected topdressing operators – but it’s just a matter of time. Topdressing pilot Duncan Hart of Skyfarmers, Methven said it was probably a bit early to tell if there would be a tail-off in fertiliser demand because of the high price – this would become apparent in the autumn which, along with spring, was the main season for topdressing. “Then I imagine it will have a trickledown effect,” he said. “I’m sure it will have an impact on everyone and everything – not just the topdressing companies.” The international prices for urea and DAP – the product that combined nitrogen and phosphate for fertiliser – had increased astronomically over the past few months. At the beginning of December urea was priced at about $1200/ tonne. A year earlier it was under $350/t and as recently as September 2021 was $590/t. At the start of the year, farmers paid $5.50 for one litre of glypho-

sate; now it was $13 and percentage-wise that increase was huge. Bulk fertilsers like superphosphate – the prices haven’t gone up much, Hart said. “What has gone up is the high analysis fertilisers used on crops and we do quite a lot of this – that’s special mixes on potatoes and specialist crops. “Some of the cropping-ground

farmers don’t have a choice but to put urea and DAP on and this will be eating into their bottom margin.” But eventually, it will impact everyone and everything, he said. “What has had a greater effect on us is the good (growth) season – when there is a lot of grass around farmers don’t tend to put fertiliser on,” said Bill Byrch of

Let’s find a better solution to the ETS

Motunau-Ag Air. A worry for both Hart and Byrch was recent competition from Super Air (owned by Ballance Agri-nutrients) which had established itself in Canterbury and which was actively gunning for work. “The South Island is well serviced with (topdressing) aircraft. Super Air is putting pressure

on independent operators who must be profitable. Super Air doesn’t have to be profitable – they can run at a loss if they need to,” Byrch said. “As far as their technology (like variable rate application) goes, we all have it. Some farmers are right into it and others just want you to chuck the fertiliser on as cheap as possible.”

The Government has legislated that agriculture greenhouse gas emissions will be priced by 2025 to meet emission reduction targets. The agriculture sector is already committed to playing its part in reducing emissions, and we know there is a better solution than the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). That’s why DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb New Zealand are industry partners of the Primary Sector Climate Action Partnership – He Waka Eke Noa. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Take a step back, remember why you wanted to do a thing. Much has happened since; your purpose has evolved to fit the circumstances. But that initial kernel of intention is still the heart of this venture. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Confident in your abilities and choices, you’ll find it unnecessary to compare and contrast with what others are doing. The habit of minding your own business will benefit 20 different ways today. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): People will pick up on things that you’re dwelling on, which is why you’ll consciously steer yourself to dwell on the things that you’ll be happy for them to know about you. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Whether consciously or unconsciously, you keep placing yourself on the path of self-discovery. The respect and love you gather up is a natural byproduct you’ve earned along the way. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Egos are like those pot-bellied pigs sold as “miniature”. Those pigs can grow to any size, according to their feeding. Attention is the food of the ego. A small ego is the result of a restricted-attention diet. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): As much as you try to live in the moment, something keeps pulling you back. These memories are worth investigating. They hold the key to unlocking a fuller experience of the present. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Amusingly, attractions and aversions can sometimes be obvious to everyone around except the person in the thick of the spell. In such a case, the value of honest friends becomes apparent. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Every face has a default position, a latent pose that reveals the median mood of a person. You can’t go wrong if by steering toward those with a pleasant resting face. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You don’t have to like the same things to like the person, but there’s magic in common ground. Where your taste intersects with someone is not only a confluence of aesthetics; it’s a soul connection. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The volume with which people comfortably express themselves can vary widely between individuals. It’s a thing to be aware of as you match and mirror your way into establishing trust and connection. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): When loved ones want your assistance, your response is automatic. Today’s situation warrants a contemplative pause. Consider that, sometimes, the very best way to help is by not helping. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Today’s plot is a swirl of complexity. Before you reward the hero of the day, just make sure this person didn’t actually cause the problem to begin with.

Worth her wait in gold

he’s the sweet smiling, chilled out middle child, who always dodged the dishes. Now she’s a snowboarding global superstar. She is, of course, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, who won New Zealand’s first Winter Olympic gold in the women’s slopestyle event in Beijing a week ago. Tonight, the Wanaka lass continues her bid for a second gold in her favoured big air event, a discipline she won bronze in the 2018 Olympics when she was just 16. And it’s also an event that she won at the annual extreme X Games a month ago So, quite incredibly after no golds since New Zealand’s first involvement at the Winter Olympics in 1952 in Oslo, Norway, Sadowski-Synnott is favoured to finish with two in

Daryl Holden nine days. That’s not bad going at all for the youngster, who was born in Sydney to an American mother and New Zealand father, and who moved to Wanaka when she was six. Her star is very much on the rise, placing her in rarefied air and an enviable position for a Kiwi snowboarder, or, in fact, any athlete from our shores. How good could she be? How many other titles could come her way? Goodness only knows, but still being young, even in snowboarding terms where

teenagers often dominate, Sadowski-Synnott could be the best the sport has ever seen. And with that success will come equally unprecedented commercial, sponsorship and career opportunities. Given the amount of time she spends competing and training in the Northern Hemisphere, Sadowski-Synnott already appeals as someone who could partner with Air New Zealand. She could be the fresh-faced frontperson they need to launch the return of international travel, whenever that may be. I mean, who can’t see her being a hit with the airline’s successful and trademark safety videos? She’s already a social media star – with 128,000 followers on Instagram alone – which must open up a plethora of options

for new sponsors and endorsements. So it’s easy to see why many are suggesting she could become the queen of global snowboarding, the female rival of American superstar Shaun White. Nicknamed the “flying tomato’’, due to his red hair, White is a three-time Olympic gold medallist and a former professional skateboarder. He’s the biggest name in snowboarding, but is nearing the end of a fabulous career. A new star is needed and there’s no reason why our girl couldn’t reach those dizzy heights, because she has a spark about her and an unbridled passion for her sport and for having fun. That was highlighted after

her historic gold medal breakthrough in Beijing. It was warmly received everywhere, even by the opposition, who swamped her at the end to share the joy of a special triumph. It was one of the highlights of the Games, as was her response to getting a congratulatory message from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. “Honestly, the reaction has been absolutely insane,’’ she told reporters. “I haven’t been able to keep up with all the support and love that I’ve got, and then I got a shout-out from Jacinda.’’ A shout-out from the PM. Who else would call it that? Marketing gold is our Sadowski-Synnott. New Zealand, and snowboarding, are lucky to have her.

Dress-ups and sledging C

ongratulations to the Ashburton Golf Club on another excellent tournament at the weekend in what was very trying conditions. So much so that play on the second day had to be cancelled. Terry, Paddy and all the others who organise the tournament deserve a real pat on the back. They have turned what was a dying event into a fun, not to be missed weekend of golf. The change of format has proved to be a real winner. It gives my regular partner for that tournament Jason Mactier and I a perfect opportunity to sledge each other flat out for two days. And that started earlier than usual this year when Jason deserted the ‘team’ before he played his second shot on hole number one. Over a couple of beers last year, where all the good decisions are made, we decided it would be good to wear matching

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR shirts and hats the following year. For some reason we decided it would be a great idea to get the ugliest examples of these possible. A couple of weeks after last year’s event, Jason messaged me and said I have a couple hats coming from Wish for us. They are hideous. He wasn’t exaggerating. A few weeks after that I spotted a couple of horrendous looking shirts on the ‘crap we haven’t been able to sell’ rack in a menswear store. I remember the ‘what the hell are you doing buying TWO of these shirts?’ look the shop assistant gave me as I was handing over $10 for both of them.

With some of the greens under water, Sunday’s play had to be abandoned

“Ugly shirts for a golf tournament” I told her. “Aaaah, I did wonder,” she replied. Back to Saturday and we received a number of comments about our attire on the practice green, only one of those was positive and I have passed on that lady’s details to Specsavers. As I was lining up my second shot on hole one, I noticed my partner moving around awkwardly out of the corner of my eye. I instantly wondered if he was having some kind of seizure. But no, he was removing the shirt and replacing it with his regular golfing shirt. “What the blimmin’ heck (or words similar to that) are you doing?” I enquired. “It’s too tight, I can’t swing properly in it. It’s because I have such broad shoulders,” he said. Once I got back up again and stopped laughing I said “What about the team, the partnership?” I replied. “Bugger that,” he said. As you can imagine the sledging went straight into overdrive and pretty much didn’t let up. It intensified somewhat on the 18th fairway, when he put his ugly shirt back on; I guess he was fearful of the sledges that may come his way from the outside bar beside the green. Somehow, we managed to gel okay and finished with an Ambrose score of nett 66.25. We sat back watching the afternoon players get soaked and thought there probably wouldn’t be too many good scores in the worsening rain. As it turned out the weather continued to worsen overnight and the pin was pulled on the second round when some of the greens were found to be under water early on Sunday. We finished 9th and won a golf shop voucher, unfortunately not a menswear voucher and we also secured the inaugural ‘Best Dressed’ prize, which was a leftover prize thanks to no second round. Hopefully it’s the start of an annual prize and it would be good to see some more pairs willing to look like plonkers in the name of togetherness and bonding. Well, for a couple of holes anyway. Just make sure it’s not too snug a fit, if your partner is a former Mr Universe, like mine.

The team uniform earned a Best Dressed prize. I think they missed a trick at yesterday’s Super Bowl.

Mixed reaction to minimum wage rise in 2021, or 7.8 per cent of all wage earners. That was compared to 3.5 per cent on the minimum wage in 2018. But the idea was hardly endorsed by some Guardian Facebook followers, who were asked if a minimum wage rise was a good thing “Reducing tax would be better for this pay bracket,” Lynne Bridge said. Jody Binnie expressed frustration from the perspective of tertiary graduates.

Lauren Pattemore An Ashburton employer has called the minimum wage increase ridiculous. The minimum wage, currently set at $20 an hour, will rise to $21.20 an hour from April 1, with the 6 per cent increase being just above the annual rate of inflation recorded in the December quarter. But business owners and employers, like Ashburton Holiday Park contract manager, Nadine Pink, are not impressed. “It’s absolutely ridiculous. As an employer, the wages we pay have gone up 25 per cent in just over two years,’’ she said. “Businesses won’t be able to afford to have staff.’’ Pink said the wage increase was just one of many extra costs that have hit businesses impacted by the pandemic. She said Covid-19 had significantly increased the holiday park’s expenditure, with extra cleaning protocols and equipment need-

“Now all costs will go up to cover this so inflation will continue to rise. The only people rubbing their hands together is the Government,” she said. Another pointed to a potential solution from over the Tasman, saying: “In Australia, there is a taxfree threshold of $18,000,’’ Catherine Jemma said. “Folks on much lower-range wages end up with much more in their pocket.” But Brendon Argyle thought there were obvious spinoffs to the

absolutely ridiculous. As an employer, “ It’s the wages we pay have gone up 25 per Business owner Bob McDonald felt a fuel tax initiative would have been better than a minimum wage increase. ed, but their revenue returns had dropped because of a loss in patronage caused by border closures, lockdowns, and the existing red light traffic settings. Long-time Ashburton business owner, Bob McDonald, was equally concerned and felt a fuel tax initiative could have been a better solution to meet the rising cost of living.

“If they want to give people more money, instead of doing it through businesses, cut some of the fuel tax down,” said McDonald, who has owned the Health2000 shop in the Ashburton Arcade since 1994. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) justified the move, saying there were about 160,600 people aged 16 to 64 paid the minimum wage

cent in just over two years.

“Minimum wage keeps going up, but those of us who have paid thousands for student loans and worked many years in our careers struggle to get pay rises,” Binnie said. Kylie Marriott commented on the effects the increase would have on the New Zealand economy.

April 1 increase. “Every penny earned by a minimum wage worker tends to go in the economy, so it will be better for all in the long term,” he said. Greg McGee believed the wage increase was unavoidable. “All wages must go up every year, it’s a given. It doesn’t raise the cost of bugger all.”

TakingIssue Some sports opinions you don’t want to miss

with Matt Markham

Todd lets himself and those who look up to him down Matt Markham

I

t’s said you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink. However, in the case of Sir Mark Todd, it’s a case of not being able to make them jump. If you missed it over the weekend, historic video footage emerged from two years ago of the equestrian legend striking a horse with significant force in the UK as it wouldn’t approach a water section of what appears to be a cross country course. The five-time Olympic medal winner is observed to walk forward and strike the horse on multiple occasions with a stick in an effort to get the horse and rider to go forward. Eventually the horse does move, but the manner in which Todd approaches the situation and handles himself is far from becoming of a man awarded multiple titles for

his services to equestrian. Watching the footage on Sunday morning, I felt sick and disappointed that a person whom I have for so long looked up to would allow it to happen. Yes, Todd’s past is chequered – but one thing that I never questioned was his horsemanship. His natural affinity with a horse and an ability to get one to move and do things that seemed beyond normal human control was mind-boggling, and images in my mind as a youngster watching him and his famed horse Charisma do their thing will always remain. Some people just have a knack for working with a horse. A natural kindness and understanding that means that the two can become one, and go on and do great things. Having been around horses all my life, I know this to be true. Often, you’ll get a horse who is a little resistant to training, one who is cantankerous and stubborn. But there’s usually always a way around it. Some kind and gentle cajoling, or a little forceful pressure and you

can get the best result. What Todd was recorded doing to this particular horse, however, was none of the above. It was abusive, and there’s no place for that sort of behaviour when training horses, irrelevant of the situation. So much pressure is placed by activists on the supposed way that horses are treated by trainers in the racing realm and in the sport horse arena as well, and instances like this do nothing to help with the battle to show that so much of what is said by those people is untrue. Todd has publicly apologised for what unfolded on the video, and investigations are under way by the relevant authorities – as they should be – but this will do far more damage to the image and standing of one of our greatest ever Olympians than he could imagine. Because while I’m just one person left feeling let down by a childhood idol, I can guarantee there are hundreds, if not thousands, more people like me out there who know and love horses who will be just as disappointed.

Sir Mark Todd in happier times.

Rain becomes winner in club cricket yet again Tech draw first blood in Mid Canterbury T20 competition Matt Markham Rain was again the winner in cricket action over the weekend, with all cricket across the region cancelled, but the South Canterbury T20 competition did manage to get the first of two rounds scheduled for the weekend played on Thursday night. It was final contenders in the longer format competition, Tech Stags, who drew first blood, beating Mid Canterbury bedfellows Allenton by five wickets on the Ashburton Domain Oval on Thursday evening. The switch to the shorter format comes just for a week before two days of finals this weekend in the Tweedy Cup, with the weather again looking a little dicey for play, especially on Saturday afternoon in Timaru. It comes after the first round of the finals a week ago were also put to the side, with sodden grounds ruining any chance of play – a major factor in this sea-

Matt Tait showed his all-round abilities on Thursday night. son’s play with a number of weekends cancelled. On Thursday night however,

Allenton captain Karmjeet Singh won the toss and elected for his side to take the bat for the first

innings – a decision he may have been left to rue after he lost his first batsmen two balls into the match, and then another five balls later. Ryan Bell claimed the first wicket when opening the bowling, and then Alex Hooper struck early in his first over of the match to put Tech right in the driver’s seat. Gurmeet Singh and Harpreet Dhami came together in the middle, and they put on a 60run third wicket stand to place their side in a good position, but the introduction of Matt Tait to the bowling attack changed the course of the match. On his way to the tidy figures of 4-15 from his four overs of bowling, Tait tore his way through the Allenton middle order, with Hooper also playing an integral role with three wickets of his own, while Harry Jones claimed two. Allenton were rolled in the 18th over for 92. Dhami top scored for his side with 42, but Singh’s 15 was the only other score to reach double figures. With a small target to chase and a powerful batting line-up,

Tech looked warm favourites to win the game, but the early loss of Jason Morrison in the third over and then James Fitch being clean-bowled the next ball had them in a little trouble. It went from bad to worse when Des Kruger fell in the next over, and all of a sudden Tech were three down and needed to dig in. The perfect man for the occasion came forward, and just as he did with the ball, Tait took control with the bat on his way to an unbeaten 42 to see his side home. He combined with Sam Clark (23) to put the match beyond doubt with a 39-run partnership, and then helped guide his side to victory with five wickets remaining after 14 overs of play. It was a strong start from the Tech side, who would have been keen to make it two-from-two against Star/Celtic on Saturday before the rain ruined those plans. They’ll now turn their attention to the major semi-final in the Tweedy Cup on Saturday against Temuka, with the chance of taking on Pleasant Point in the final on Sunday in the offering. Both matches will be played in Timaru.

Classic cancelled after first day Matt Markham Initially it didn’t look as though the weekend’s wet weather was going to get the better of them, but by Sunday morning the more than 200 golfers who were set to take part in the second day of the Harvey Norman Classic

had to admit defeat. The Ashburton Golf Club’s marquee event for the year, the Classic, is attended and competed for by golfers from all around the district and from further afield – but despite a rather wet, but enjoyable day on Saturday, there was no option come Sunday morning when those arriving at the course were greeted to flooded greens and fairways from the deluge. “We are very disappointed that

we can’t have today’s play, but are left with no option,” match convenor, Terry Kingsbury told entrants. “We are gutted; if it’s not Covid trying to stop things it’s mother nature.” The two-day event which runs an overall competition as well as men’s, women’s and mixed competitions had drawn a field of 224 players, competing in teams of two and while the final round on Sunday was completed, winners were found from Saturday’s play. A reduced prizegiving was held on Sunday afternoon in the Ashburton Golf Club clubrooms, with only 100 people able to be in the facility due to the outside areas also being under water. Chris Helem and Symon Restieaux were crowned overall champions with their score of 62 to take the major prize. Barry Jury and Paul Stoddart recorded a first-round score of 63 which was enough to see them crowned men’s winners, while Jennifer Shepherd and Tonee Hurley won the women’s title with a score of 68.75. The mixed title went to Dave and Dinielle King, who carded 65.25 on Saturday. In closing the tournament officially, Kingsbury pledged that the 2023 edition would be bigger and better than ever before.

A wet weekend saw the Harvey Norman Classic cancelled after one day of play due to flooding at the Ashburton Golf Course.

Currie conquers the Coast to Coast again Matt Markham A last-minute decision to throw his hat into the ring and have a crack at another version of the race that started it all paid dividends for Braden Currie on the weekend, as he won his fourth Coast to Coast Longest Day title. The now Wanaka based, but Methven born and raised, Currie, announced on Friday morning that he would take his place in the event after his next major goal, the New Zealand Ironman was postponed until later in the year, leaving the professional athlete with no serious competition in his homeland. And the decision turned out to be the right one, as he waltzed his way to victory in his first appearance in over five years at the event. Currie crushed the amended course, and left some of the world’s best multisport racers in his wake. For the first time since 2010, the traditional course was unable to be used due to the high river levels through the Waimakariri Gorge, with the competition’s B Course put in its place. That meant rather than paddling the traditional 70km through the gorge, athletes bypassed it on bikes – an increase from the normal 17km bike ride from Mt White Bridge through to 112km ride, which brought them out on the lower reaches of the Waimakariri for a 30km kayak before a 12km sprint on wheels again to the finish line. That played into Currie’s hands significantly. He hadn’t been in his boat for years. But the bike has become a strong point thanks to his Ironman work, and his running ability, well – it was good when he last won the Coast to Coast – but perhaps even better now. But with little time to prepare, Currie admitted postrace that his plan for the race was to have no plan, but instead just go out and have some fun. “A race like this is incredibly hard to plan for, so it was about having some fun,” he said. “On the run, I actually remember the exact root that tripped my brother up a few years ago and caused some pretty solid damage to his knee – that kept me amused for a while.” Currie was heard on video footage throughout the race chatting with spectators as he ran or biked past them, and his

Braden Currie celebrates winning his fourth Coast to Coast longest day title. general demeanour certainly highlighted the enjoyment he was getting from being back out on the course that started it all for him. “It was amazing to be back racing in the natural environment, and the course is a favourite. “To go back to where it all started and have an experience like this feels incredible, it means a lot to me.” Kicking off at Kumara Beach on Saturday morning, Currie found himself in a bunch of athletes throughout most of the first 55km bike ride, jumping off with a slender lead heading into the 30.5km run over Goats Pass. In previous efforts, the mountain run had been Currie’s strong point, and although time has gone on nothing changed as he leaped his way over the hills to come out on the other side with a sizeable lead on the pack – one he never relinquished. By the time he entered the water, his lead was 20 minutes, and it never changed from that as he powered down the Waimakariri before jumping on the bike to the finish line.

A race like this is incredibly hard to plan for, so it was about having some fun

Currie with his brother, race director Glenn Currie.

“Obviously, I haven’t been on the course at all, or in my boat for years, and haven’t done any real mountain trail running, but once you’re in that race mode, you just do what you’ve trained to do in that environment. “I had a great day – a good run, bike and paddle. “I knew the river would be high so as long as I stayed in the fast water and kept my boat up the right way, I hoped I wouldn’t lose too much time – luckily that happened.” Currie completed the course in a time of nine hours, 45 minutes, and 23 seconds –

more than 20 minutes ahead of his nearest rival, defending champion and close mate, Dougall Allan. His win added to his titles won in 2013, 2014 and 2015 which kickstarted his career in multisport, and led to him become New Zealand’s current Ironman champion after a switch to the sport in 2016. With Ironman New Zealand in March officially cancelled and shifted to December, Currie will now turn his attention overseas with his next port of call, Utah in the United States, where he will compete in the Ironman World Championships in May.

MID CANTERBURY’S FINEST

Locals dig in and produce the results A strong contingent of locals took to the starting line for Saturday’s Coast to Coast in various categories across the competition with one effort in particular shining bright – outside the efforts of Longest Day champion, Braden Currie. Samuel Clements-Stewart, a regular starter in the race each year, produced a standout effort to make his way on to the podium by finishing second in the 18-39 men’s age group and in 14th place overall. Clements-Stewart was only three minutes behind the winner of the agegroup category, Hamish Sadler, with the only difference between the pair being Sadler’s work over Goats Pass on the run. with Clements-Stewart making up plenty of time on both bike and in the kayak. Methven’s Jarrod Coutts, who switched from the two-day team event last year to

the one-day challenge, was 11th in the same age group, and the 25th male past the finishing line in a great effort for his first look at the one-day event. Mark Summerfield and Allan Broomhall also featured, finishing 15th and 16th overall in the 18-39 group and 36th and 39th overall respectively, while Mick OConnor and Simon Chapman competed in the 40-49 age group. Mid Canterbury’s sole entrant in the one-day event in the women’s category – Vicky Jones – also had plenty of reasons to smile. Jones completed the course to much fanfare as the last person to reach the finish line, just before 9pm on Saturday night. Her effort, highlighted on the social media channels of the Coast to Coast, was described as the epitome of what the race is all about.

Sport and Rec Strategy survey set to close

Weather has major impact on sports Matt Markham

Matt Markham Sporting clubs and recreation groups from around the district have until Friday to have their say, in a new initiative to support wellbeing within the Ashburton District. The Ashburton District Council are working toward a new Sport and Recreation Strategy to replace the previous one set in 2010 around the opening of the EA Networks Centre, and they’re calling on those involved at the ground floor in sport around Mid Canterbury to have their say. A survey is available on the Ashburton District Council website and social me-

The new Sport and Recreation Strategy will better help the Ashburton District Council support sport in the district. dia channels for groups to undertake, but it officially closes this week on Friday, February 18. Ashburton District Council’s Community Services manager, Steve Fabish said that they were keen to work with and hear from local groups and organisations to help develop a new game plan going forward. “These organisations play a vital role in support our community’s wellbeing through access to active recreation, so it’s essential that we gather their ideas on how the Council can best provide support,” he said. The survey is expected to also help understand issues and problems that

local sporting groups and clubs might be facing, with questions covering topics such as availability of volunteers, ease of fundraising and the impact Covid-19 is having on the local sporting scene. “We think these groups will also have a good grasp on the opportunities that might be available to us, so their input will be invaluable as we get the ball rolling on the refreshed strategy.” While the survey is open only to groups and organisations that fit the bill – individuals will get their chance to give feedback and suggestions when the policy is released for public feedback later in the year.

Mid Canterbury tennis players will have to wait another week to get back into the swing of interclub. All senior interclub tennis across Canterbury was called off on the weekend adding a delay to the return to play for the new year for teams. The weekend was set to be the first round of the year for the local A Grade and A Reserve tennis competition, as well as Tennis Canterbury’s Premier and Sunday Division matches. With water pooling on courts, decisions were left as late as possible for a potential break in the weather, but it never eventuated, with calls made around lunchtime to abandon all play for the weekend. The weather also took control of the Tinwald Cycling Club on Sunday, with their race also put to the side. Bowls did, however, go ahead on Saturday, with the Gala Cup and Prestige Trophy as well as the Premier Trophy and Challenge Cup competed for. At Ashburton, Allenton prevailed in the Gala Cup, beating Ashburton MSA 22-7 in the final, with Methven taking out the Plate event over Rakaia. In the Women’s Prestige, Allenton and Ashburton both recorded wins in the first two rounds of the morning, but their match was stopped after nine ends due to the rain with the score at 7-all. The match will be completed on a date in the near future. At Allenton, Ashburton overcame Allenton to win the ladies Premier Trophy in a tight match that ended 12-11 and Ashburton won the Men’s Challenge Trophy with four wins and a draw over Hampstead.

Robertson ‘not concerned’ Matt Markham Crusaders coach, Scott Robertson perhaps best summed up the art that is pre-season rugby on the weekend after his side fell to a second consecutive last-minute loss in Queenstown against the Hurricances. Faced with the question of whether or not perhaps the aura around the red and blacks would have faded with their losses to the Highlanders in Oamaru and then the Canes on Saturday, Robertson was abrupt in his response. “Things change pretty quickly when there’s points on the ladder,” he said. The Hurricanes scored four second half tires in the match to come from 10-24 down to win in the 83rd minute of the match 2724, setting up a mouth-watering clash between the two sides when they meet again this week in the opening round of Super Rugby Pacific. But while a loss is a loss, Robertson was overall very happy with the hit-out, and thinks his side is right where they need to be ahead of the competition beginning.

“We created a hell of a lot of opportunities, which we could quite take, but it was a good contest for us. “It just shows, the Hurricanes can score from anywhere. It’s a good reminder a week out from the comp.”

Results Hurricanes 27 (Salesi Rayasi, Julian Savea, Billy Proctor, Alex Fidow, Aidan Morgan tries; Morgan con) Crusaders 24 (Dallas McLeod, Abraham Pole, Macca Springer, Isaiah Punivai tries; Fergus Burke con; Simon Hickey con). HT: 5-12. Game of three halves: Chiefs 14 (Emoni Narawa, Pita Gus Sowakula tries; Bryn Gatland 2 con) Highlanders 5 (Scott Gregory try) Chiefs 17 (Jonah Lowe 2, Tyrone Thompson tries; Josh Ioane con) Blues 7 (Taniela Tela’a try; Harry Plummer con) Highlanders 21 (Marino MikaeleTu’u, Vereniki Tikoisolomone, Folau Fakatava tries; Marty Banks 3 con) Blues 19 (Vaiolini Ekuasi, Josh Goodhue, Taine Plumtree tries, Stephen Perofeta 2 cons).

The Crusaders welcome back some heavy artillery for the match with Joe Moody, Scott Barrett, Braydon Ennor and George Bridge all getting some time on the paddock and for the first 40 minutes were in complete control. They scored twice in the first half – once through Mid Canterbury’s own Dallas McLeod, who made it back-to-back tries in preseason matches, to lead 12-5 at the break before extending that out to 24-10 heading into the final quarter. The Hurricanes hit their straps though, and with time up on the clock went to a Hail Mary play which saw them go from one end of the field to the other to score and win the match. With the competition’s new side, Moana Pasifika out of action due to a number of players in the team contracting Covid, which has resulted in their opening game against the Blues being postponed, the remaining teams in the competition took on a game of three halves for their final hit out. The Chiefs beat the Highlanders 14-5 in the first match, before backing that up with a three-try effort to beat the Blues in the next, and then the Highlanders looked sharp with a 21-19 victory over the Blues to round out the preseason.
