Vick Singh has come from a city of over a million to a town of just a thousand. Four years ago, Singh moved from Auckland to Southbridge. Singh came down south to help out his cousin Harry Singh, owner of the Southbridge Hotel, as co-owner of the Railway Tavern. “Auckland is totally different, so fast and busy. Rakaia, is relaxing, I love it. It’s so much better. This is my home”, Singh said. Singh decided to put his business management qualification from Auckland to the test, and just needed some front of house experience to get a hands on insight into how to run a county pub successfully. “I worked at the pub for six months for some experience. I wanted to (eventually) buy a country pub,” Singh said. His dream became a reality, when he and Harry bought the Railway Tavern after his six month stint at the Southbridge Hotel. The Railway Tavern has a history of its own, built in 1873, the place has character, just like Singh does. When asked what the most popular beverage sold is, he replied: “It’s Speights of course, pride of the south.” Singh and his staff of six are planning an event to celebrate

It’s all good in the Hood Lili Haydon

Grant Hood and Carolyn Bond-Hood have been in the earthmoving game since 2002. Their company completes work from Mt Hutt all the way up to the Rakaia Huts. “I grew up in the industry,”Grant said. Grant’s father Doug, who Lake Hood was named after, had his own earthmoving company. Grant didn’t stay put though, he and his wife Carolyn decided to head over the ditch and ended up spending nine years working in Australia, mainly in Western Australia in the mining industry. After that the couple decided it was time to come home with their children in tow and another on the way. Their children Leighton, Olivia and Joshua have all grown up now. Olivia and Joshua both work for the family company, an even Leighton helps out when he can but, “building is his love,” Carolyn said. Coming back to Ashburton allowed their children the opportunity to compete nationally and to represent Ashburton in sport competitions, “(They were) big fish, in a small pond. If we lived in Christchurch, they may have not had the same opportunities,” Carolyn said. A favourite pastime for the family was heading to Mt Hutt in spring and then going water skiing at Lake Hood later in the afternoon. The family had the best of both worlds. The family’s passion for sports has not stopped. The couple now sponsor the Allenton Rugby Club and the Lake Hood Water Ski Club. The couple have expanded the family

Carolyn and Grant Hood standing in front of their handy Volvo earthmover. even more by employing a team of 25 locals, which they count as family. And were pleased to be able to keep everyone on through Covid. “(We) punch above our weight,” Carolyn said. They must because their team have just been given the contract to help complete the $17m fish screen development for the Rangitata Diversion Race. The team will be “doing the bulk of the

earth and concrete structures,” Grant said. According to Grant it will be the biggest fish screen in the southern hemisphere. The diversion race is an irrigation and power generation scheme which diverts water from the Rangitata River to irrigate more than 100,000 hectares of farmland in Mid Canterbury. “Mid Canterbury wouldn’t be what it is without it,” Grant said.

That isn’t the only new venture, the couple recently became grandparents, and “no-one’s allowed to leave if you have a child,” Carolyn chuckles. And why would they, the company puts family first, “family time is important, we always shut down to do a reset for 10 days over the festive season,” Carolyn said. And, as the saying goes, a family that plays together, stays together.

Braided Rivers Community Trust continues its rebranding Malcolm Hopwood When the Gala Cup, a major tennis tournament, was held at the weekend, Rob Reid was proud of the branding. Reid is CEO of the Ashburton Braided Rivers Community Trust, which is progressively rebranding its venues around Mid Canterbury, and the Gala Cup was staged at the newly unveiled Braided Rivers Community Trust Tennis Centre. The trust’s association with tennis is into its third decade, with the trust providing $5500 towards maintaining the tennis facilities in Oak Grove and providing a further $5000 plus for two annual tournaments. “We have a longstanding relationship with tennis which we intend to continue,” Reid said. “It’s an example of our ongoing commitment to sport in Mid Canterbury.” A major challenge for the tennis centre is its court resurfacing programme. The plexipave court surface has a limited life and, at a cost of $8500 per court each time, represents a major commitment for the centre to maintain the complex. The latest resurfacing has been completed in blue with Braided Rivers contributing to part of the cost. The trust’s next major project is

month. “It will be our most visible rebranding,” Reid said.

The first round of the Braided Rivers Community Trust grants closes today and will be announced

in mid-February. Up to $20,000 will be allocated to community organisations.

Local tourism projects get a trust boost List of recipients:

Jonathan Leask Ashburton’s Braided Rivers Community Trust grants totalling $457,919 will boost 14 organisations in Mid Canterbury including two audacious community-driven tourism projects. The trust, in association with the Lion Foundation, has allocated $150,000 to the Staveley Hall Society’s $1.12 million refrigeration project that will future-proof the historic skating rink. Right next door to the ice rink, the Mt Somers Walkway Society received $75,000 towards its plans to reinstate walking access to Sharplin Falls. Trust chief executive Rob Reid said the two tourism projects were great ones for the trust to get behind. “The ice rink is going to be a huge project for the district,” Reid said. The redevelopment project will provide the necessary infrastructure to be capable of delivering a guaranteed three-month opening for the ice skating and curling rink annually by refrigerating the main rink. Project spokeswoman Claire

The Staveley Hall Society was the big winner in the recent grants round by the Braided Rivers Community Trust for its project that will future-proof the historic skating rink. Harden said the trust grant brings the project’s fundraising total to $753,352. “We are not far off now,” Harden said. They have three more grant applications coming in the next six months, she said. Most of the work on the staged project will begin after this year’s ice skating season – if the weather allows, Harden said. The project is planned to be completed in time for the 2023 season.

Right next to the rink is the currently inaccessible Sharplin Falls, but the local walkway group plan to change that. Rock falls on the track during and after the 2011 earthquakes meant that DOC closed the track due to safety concerns. Following extensive consultation with DOC and geologists, the Mt Somers Walkways Society has undertaken to build a new track themselves. Society fundraising co-ordinator, Jack Allan, said the $75,000 grant from the trust keeps them

on target and was a great boost to start the new year after a series of setbacks at the end of last year with other grants being declined. The project is estimated to cost around $470,000, but Allan said that may increase due to rising costs of steel, with the major cost of the project being two new 30m long bridges. The other complicating factor Allan said was a number of events that were to benefit the project have had to be postponed or cancelled.

Family hopes to adopt some grandparents Maddison Gourlay Covid has made it very hard for families to be together. Ashburton single mum of two, from South Africa Rochelle Van Wyk, is looking for adoptive grandparents for her children. Van Wyk posted on social media to see if anyone in Ashburton was in the same position as them. “There are heaps of grandparents that can’t see their grandkids due to Covid,” Van Wyk said. “I thought it would be great to try to meet someone with grandkids overseas, as my kids have their grandparents overseas. Van Wyk’s children have grandparents located in South Africa, Australia, and Samoa. “It would be great to have that positive influence taking them for a walk in the gardens, teaching them how to bake and teaching them valuable life lessons,” she said.

Van Wyk said that if there was an adoptive grandparent group in Ashburton it would be a blessing for single parents with no family around. “A lot of single parents want a bit of support, it would be great to have the additional support,” she said. “It’s hard not having family around as a parent.” She was aware of a grandparent mentor group existing in Ashburton years ago. She decided to try to find something similar. On her social media post, she gained a lot of positive support from the public. “Great idea, children need a community to raise them,” Petra Reynolds said. “This is a lovely idea, my kids have been without their grandparents for two years because of the borders, maybe this is a good option,” Priscilla Gomez said. A member of the public has reached out to Van Wyk on social media after the post, and they are meeting for coffee this week. Van Wyk said she hopes that an adoptive grandparent service starts up in Ashburton again, as it would be valuable for both the children and people that don’t have a grandchild or can’t see their grandchildren.

Ashburton Swap Meet cancelled Maddison Gourlay Due to Covid restrictions, the annual Ashburton Vintage Car Club Swap Meet has been cancelled. The event, which has taken place for over 40 years, was scheduled for May 7 this year, with an average of 5000 attendees over the day in previous years. Due to Red Traffic Light rules, the committee decided to cancel this year’s event. “With this number, it would be impossible to operate under the traffic light system,”

Terry Bingham at last year’s Swap Meet buying a lamp for his house truck. Ashburton Vintage Car Club secretary Colin Sweetman said.

“We will be contacting all stallholders over the current week.”

The Swap Meet started as a small event for car enthusiasts to network, sell and buy car parts. Over time it became a key part of the yearly motoring calendar and has become the perfect start to Wheels Week Plus. Currently, there has been no decision made to cancel the annual Wheels Week Plus event. “We haven’t made any decision to cancel Wheels Week this year,” Wheels Week Plus secretary Peter Jacobs said. “We work with a lot of clubs that organise events and will work with them. “We have months yet to find out and to see what restrictions we will be under,” he said.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president David Clark says “there is massive pressure on everybody” this harvest season in the absence of the skilled overseas workers.

Labour shortage hits harvest Jonathan Leask It’s known as the breadbasket of New Zealand, but Mid Canterbury is facing a worker burnout to complete this year’s harvest. The issue is a worker shortage due to delays in skilled overseas workers getting into the country. The Government announced changes in December to the class exemption scheme and securing more visas for overseas workers, but the amendment was only actioned last Friday. Ashburton Mayor and farmer Neil Brown said there is likely to be a worker burn-out to get this year’s harvest completed. “I’m reasonably certain the harvest will be done but what it’s doing is the farm staff and contractors that are available are working harder and longer and they will burn out. “[The harvest] is a farmer’s, so they will do everything they can to get it on time and beat the weather.” Consumers will be hoping they do or they will face further price spikes.

The disappointing factor for Brown is that the visa issue has been an ongoing discussion with the Government for two years. “And it hasn’t been remedied.” Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president David Clark said there wasn’t a lot farmers and contractors could do other than get on with the job. “Regardless of the political ineptitude we’ll get through. We always do,” Clark said. “But we are all working long hours and if the weather turns against us in the harvest it’s going to be a massive problem. “Contractors are profoundly short of staff and there is massive pressure on everybody. “Everyone is on farm now doing the essential work and everything else is not getting done.” Methven-based May Brothers Contracting managing director and harvesting manager, Phil May, said the delays in getting overseas workers is going to have a massive impact. “We are having to train and upskill people but you can only do so much and that takes time.” Pre-Covid he said they were usually getting in around 25 workers in a normal season. This season he said they were around 10 staff short, making some long hours for the staff they

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president David Clark. did have. “It’s not ideal and frustrating as you feel for the staff you do have, but harvest doesn’t stop for anyone.” Clark said with the government being aware of the issue and its continued mishandling was an-

other slap in the face for the primary industry. “The agriculture minister needs to be the minister of primary industry and actually go into bat for us. “If it wasn’t for the primary sector in New Zealand this country

would be hanging up the in receivership sign.” The continued delays in the process means the much needed workers will not arrive until it is probably too late, if they come at all. Clark said it boiled down to “the ineptitude of this MIQ system and a philosophical view of this Government that they don’t want short term staff coming in from overseas. “[The Government] seem to think we will just magic up some locals to do this work.” The issue is it’s seasonal work, providing jobs for 3-5 months, he said. “You can’t offer someone a full time permanent position. You need a big peak workforce.” Prior to Covid restricted travel, northern hemisphere workers readily arrived here for harvest, and New Zealand workers reciprocated by heading north in winter. This summer, farmers and contractors are having to make do with the local staff at their disposal.

Pool reopens after revamp Maddison Gourlay Water splashing and children’s laughter are all people will hear from the Mayfield community pool for the rest of summer. The important community asset was built in the 1950s and had been leaking since the Christchurch earthquakes. “This has been a long time coming,” Mayfield Pool committee member Allison Fleming said. “There has been a lot of hard work put into this [project].” Repairs on the pool started in November last year, with digging up the pool sides and digging trenches to lay new pipes. Then new concrete was put around parts of the pool, and a fresh coat of paint was one of the last finishing touches. Over 100 hours of work was put in over three months to get the pool in working order, ready for the end of the school holidays. The funds to upgrade the pool came from Ashburton District Council, and the Mt Somers Community Board. And the muscle for the large undertaking was supplied by local volunteers and various local businesses.

Pool charges Keys can be purchased from Mayfield Café during shop hours. - Per swim $5 and $5 returnable deposit for the key, to be returned the same day. - For the season $40 and $10 returnable deposit for the key. “This pool is a perfect community meeting place,” Fleming said. More than ten local businesses as well as the Mayfield Volunteer Fire Brigade helped by donating time or equipment for the pool renovation. There are still a few things the committee wants to do, such as heating, lining, and covering the pool, as final touches and to future proof the community asset. The pool committee is thrilled to have their community pool back in tip-top shape for the beginning of the school term. And for local children and families to use for as long as the hot weather stays around. “May it be a long hot summer starting from now,” Fleming said.

Pat returns to her first love Malcolm Hopwood Decades of dedicating farming, rural reporting, maintaining the environment and climbing some of the world’s great peaks has seen Pat Deavoll accept a position as rural content editor with the Ashburton Guardian. Deavoll, who started with the newspaper yesterday, has returned to an area she’s familiar with. She was born in North Canterbury and worked on the family farm at Motunau while attending St Margaret’s College. “I loved farming because there was a mix of everything. “I was involved with animals, genetics, conservation, producing for the overseas market and the science of farming,” she said. “I helped out with hay making, mustering, crutching and working in the yard.” Farming led to writing about it. Initially she wrote rural copy for Waterford Press, then there were years of honing her skills

Pat Deavoll with the Wanaka Star, Timaru Herald, Stuff publications and being the communications face of the NZ Alpine Club. But between times she studied journalism and English, always looking to improve herself. Deavoll completed a BA in English and Russian at the University of Canterbury

in the early 1980s, a diploma in journalism at the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) at Invercargill and a Masters in Information Design at CIT in Christchurch. After several years overseas she returned to the editor’s position with the Wanaka Star. “It was a demanding job working for a newspaper that didn’t have the resources to serve a busy community,” she said. The newly created position with the Ashburton Guardian appealed and has enabled her to return to her first love of rural reporting. However, farming and journalism are only part of an active outdoor life. For a couple of years Deavoll worked for the Mount Cook National Park managing its pristine environment and maintaining the huts and walking tracks. However, there’s another passion that played an important role in her life. For as long as she can remember, she’s wanted to climb mountains. St Margaret’s had an active tramping club and she recalls the exhilaration of tramping to the top of peaks around Arthur’s Pass and completion of the traverses. She climbed the 10,000 foot peaks

along the Southern Alps, all 27 of them and then attempted many of the big challenges in Nepal, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. “I’ve been climbing all my life. The buzz is getting to the top, the travel, the people you meet and the sense of achievement,” she said. In New Zealand you could climb a peak in one day. Overseas it took multi-days, lugging equipment and confronting the effects of altitude. She recalls the apprehension of knowing what could happen in mountains and the knowledge she was living in a dangerous world. The memory of spending five days stuck behind the Afghan border is still vivid in her mind. In the end Pat and her brother, Bill Byrch, had to grease the hands of border guards with $100 bills to get to the former Russian state of Tajikistan. With an ankle, knee and hip replacement, her active days of climbing are over and instead she’s an adventure motorcyclist. She knows most of the tracks and gravel roads of Mid Canterbury but, if there’re any more she’s yet to conquer, she’d love to know.

Fickle weather brings harvest hiccups By Pat Deavoll

If the escalating cost of fuel and fertiliser isn’t problem enough for Mid Canterbury farmers, they are now grappling with a poor start to the annual grain and seed harvest. January’s weather had been cantankerous, so the harvest has been very slow to kick off, said Federated Farmers provincial president for Mid Canterbury David Clark. “The weather was very wet and cloudy during December, and this had a real impact on the flowering of the crops.” And there is an “atrocious” weather forecast for the end of the week. Every cropping farmer in the district is just crossing their fingers it doesn’t eventuate, he said.

“There is a bit of harvest being done but there is a long way to go.” Clark said early yield results had been disappointing, particularly the early grass seeds. Peas were also disappointing. There has been virtually no cereal done yet except for some winter barley and that was equally as disappointing, he said. “They are having the same problem in South Canterbury – they have a lot to do down there.” But it’s early days, he said, and the harvest may well improve with the later crops that flowered during the good run of weather over Christmas and New Year. The poor start to harvest is not helped by some fertiliser products having gone up 300 per cent in the

last 15 months – this is having a massive flow-on effect to on-farm cost structures. The inflationary pressure coming to New Zealand is massive, Clark said. Harvest goes on until mid-March ending with the later flowering specialist crops. According to NIWA, La Niña conditions will continue to affect Canterbury for the next three months with temperatures likely to be above average – good news for harvesters. Rainfall is predicted to be near normal and long periods of higher-than-normal air pressure will result in long dry spells. Soil moisture levels are most likely to be near normal. “It’s just a matter of us cracking on,” Clark said.

Urgent action needed to stop carbon rort

F

ederated Farmers is calling on the government to live up to its pledge and review the Overseas Investment Act ‘special forestry test’ and be fair to sheep and beef farmers We understand that Forestry Minister Stuart Nash and Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor have been lobbying for this fair and sensible step but Cabinet is dithering, and this is profoundly impacting our rural communities. It’s well past time for action. This is hurting rural people in Aotearoa New Zealand. There are multiple factors driving the alarming and accelerating trend of productive sheep and beef farmland being sold for pine tree carbon farming, and a multitude of changes government must make to restore balance to land use policy. Sorting the special forestry test is straight-forward. Overseas investors buying farmed land in New Zealand need the permission of the Overseas Investment Office and are required to demonstrate

William Beetham FROM THE FARM

a significant benefit over and above that which would occur if the land was sold to a domestic purchaser (e.g. creation of more jobs, export earnings, introduction of new technology). But under the Special Forestry Test, if the overseas purchaser intends to convert the farm to forestry, this benefit requirement is waived. This policy makes it much easier for foreign investors to purchase New Zealand farms to convert to trees, and is one of many distortionary policies that are advantaging carbon farming over other land uses such as sheep and beef farming. The recent spike in the afforestation of sheep and beef farms is not the result of consumer driven demand, but heavy-handed and short-term Government policies designed to incentivize more

trees, regardless of whether or not they are the right tree in the right place. Technically, the forestry test indicates that the planted trees eventually be logged “but there is no mechanism to ensure this actually happens, nor even any rules to ensure that pruning or pest control is done. That’s not fair even to our responsible New Zealand foresters. Overseas Investors can simply plant pine trees, claim the credits, sell them and take the huge profits overseas, while New Zealanders carry the consequences now and into the future. The price of carbon under the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) has hit a record $68 per unit – well over double what it was a year earlier. That trajectory is predicted to continue. Polluting industries looking to offset their greenhouse gas emissions are behind big increases in the value of land used for raising sheep and beef cattle. Quite simply, those wanting to use land to continue farming for the future prosperity of Aotearoa

New Zealand are being out-bid. There is little benefit but a huge cost to future generations. Other than when the trees are first planted for carbon credits, there’s little or no employment benefit. That means rural families move out, school rolls fall, meat processing plants close, downstream industries suffer and it becomes a vicious cycle of rural downturn – never mind the loss of export earnings from meat and wool. But an overseas investor walks away with big profits. A report commissioned by Beef+Lamb NZ from Wairarapa-based BakerAg last year found that between 2017 and 2020 some 24,956 hectares of land were approved for sale to overseas buyers under the special forestry test. More recent data shows another 40 consents were granted under the special forestry test to a foreign applicant between July 2020 and August 2021. It has been claimed that the forestry expansion is happening on lowest land classes. But the BakerAg research found that 64

per cent of the planting is on low-erosion or moderate erosion land, which is often highly productive hill country. Federated Farmers is certainly not arguing against planting trees to sequester greenhouse gas emissions. But we need to be strategic about it, and consider the long-term picture not just short-term mindless profit – especially when that profit accrues to overseas buyers with little or no benefit to New Zealand. Feds is advocating for the restoration of policy settings that are agnostic toward land use and allow overseas investment through a smooth efficient system. Reviewing the special forestry test is a logical and increasingly urgent first step towards restoring fairness, while the wider sector and government work together urgently to develop sustainable solutions to best transition Aotearoa New Zealand towards a warming neutral nation. William Beetham is the Federated Farmers Meat & Wool chairperson

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): It won’t take you long to subtly establish your influence. If you were to exert your influence more obviously, you would be met with a resistance that would take forever to overcome. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): When you were younger you heard that life isn’t fair, though many of your experiences of late have shown evidence to the contrary. For instance, today’s bit of poetic justice is nothing short of delicious. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): A few people will make a decision and many will uncritically accept it. You, however, will push pause and do your own evaluation. You can’t personally examine everything, but this is within your realm. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The more they need you, the better you perform. You don’t worry or think about it; you just do it. Something about people depending on you makes it easier, not harder. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Your wisdom shines through your choice of what to get involved with and when. Trust those initial prescient instincts, even when (especially when!) you can’t reason them out. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You don’t like to tell others what to do. You prefer to do it yourself, and you’ll make it look so cool in the process that you attract helpers, fans and partners of all kinds. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You know how to work sequentially and get results. But the point of arrival is when everything happens at once. This will occur when it’s supposed to. Keep doing what you’re doing. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): According to your innate sense of fairness rewards will correlate to efforts and accomplishments – as it should be. Since it isn’t always so, you greatly appreciate the justice served today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): No one likes to have to work to understand something they are not interested in to begin with. But today, there’s a complexity at hand that needs to be dealt with and you’re ready to do what it takes. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Even though most of the jobs your team will do are not difficult, the possibilities will broaden in the future. So you’ll work to expand the outer edges of your capabilities and inspire others to do the same. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Knowing that someone will only remember two or three things you talk about, you pick the most important topics and find an artful and memorable way to put those ideas across. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’ll take your own desire into account, though, ultimately, much of what you do with your day will depend on what the people around you need and want. Doing things together will bring the most joy.

OUR VIEW

Nadal one of tennis’ true warriors S

o maybe I’ve got it wrong. Maybe Rafael “Rafa’’ Nadal is actually tennis’ ultimate GOAT – and one of world sport’s true warriors. Because for now, at least, especially in terms of men’s major titles, Nadal is the Greatest Of All Time. He reached that tennis immortality status in the early hours of yesterday morning when he somehow picked himself up off the Rod Laver Arena court in Melbourne to outlast Russia’s Daniil Medvedev to win his second Australian open in an epic, brutal contest, lasting just a tick under five and a-half hours. The 35-year-old Spaniard should have been beaten in straight sets, but refused to give in. He kept believing. He kept fighting. That belief means he

Daryl Holden has now won a record 21 grand slam singles titles, which is one more than long-time rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Nadal, of course, was the only one of the aptly dubbed Big Three who had a chance to claim the record solo in Australia, and that needs to be remembered. Federer is still recovering from knee surgery and Djokovic was sensationally denied the chance to defend his crown when he was deported from Australia on the tournament’s eve in the now infamous visa row.

To be honest, I’ve always rated Djokovic as the greatest of them all. He’s certainly been the best returner and his physical prowess and mental toughness have allowed him to win matches he should not have. Federer has always had the grace and class, and has made the game look so easy, but he’s 40 now and his chances of ever winning another slam seem remote. And that brings us to Nadal, who has often been referred to as the king of clay because 13 of his 21 slam wins have been at the French Open. Nadal’s dominance on clay is also highlighted by him winning 62 of his 89 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles titles. His 81 consecutive wins on clay is also the longest single-surface win streak in the open era.

But don’t be wooed by that stat alone because there’s so much more to Nadal than his clay-slaying ways. Perhaps former champion, Germany’s Boris Becker, is right when he says that we’re all making a mistake if we look solely at Nadal’s clay court dominance when evaluating his overall standing in the game. It’s easy to forget that Nadal has actually won on every surface, becoming just the fourth man in history to win all four of the sport’s major titles at least twice. He’s resilient without a doubt and he’s always been a fan favourite. Yes, he has his odd on court rituals, including the positioning of items, and he really does need to buy some shorts that fit him, so often is he adjusting and

fiddling with them. But his manner and professionalism cannot be faulted. He’s never, not once, broken a racket with anger in a match. Why? Because he’s said his family wouldn’t approve and doing so would mean he wouldn’t be in control of his emotions. Bravo to that. We should also remember that it all started here in New Zealand. Yes, that’s true. I remember watching a then 17-year-old Nadal reach his first ATP tour final in Auckland in 2004. At the time I thought he looked a pretty good player for a teenager, but a future great? No way. Get outta here. Now, nearly 20 years later, he’s shown how good – how great – he really is. Tennis’ GOAT? Perhaps he really is.

The Tap Dance Brewery

In fact, their response was quite blunt involving sex and travel. And now for something a little different. This week’s Top 5 list.

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR

Random thoughts in the doctor’s waiting room

I

have a messenger group that is made up of my two brothers, father and uncle in America. It’s an easy way for us all to keep in touch. My youngest brother Mark posted on it last week with a tag for middle brother Greg. The post suggested Greg should purchase the just listed The Brewery just outside Geraldine. It’s an ideal spot, on the Fairlie side of Geraldine, I have made the minivan stop there on several occasions while en route to the Fairlie 500 Golf Tournament. Most of the lads in the minivan are not fans of craft beer, but they humour me and stop there anyway. They have a nice range of beers on tap there and I particularly enjoyed their wheat beer. They have a nice restaurant there also. It would be a lovely spot to front up to every day. Don’t tell him I said so, but Greg is a very good beer brewer. The fact that he lives in Australia initiated his brewing passion, let’s face it, Aussie beers are rubbish! He has won several Queensland home brewing awards and got a silver in the Australian awards a few years back.

5. Why did that contagious-looking guy have to sit next to me? 4. Why do they call it a “practice” anyway? 3. It’s great to see what magazines everyone was reading in 2006. 2. I wonder what he’s here for. I wonder what she’s here for . . . 1. I hope it’s OK that I’ve already taken my pants off . . . Geraldine brewery owner Philip Olde-Olthof. I thought I’d hop on board and offer Mark some support for his post. “Great idea Mark, you could be the master brewer Greg, you could look after the gardens Mark (he’s an arborist) and I could do all the marketing.” I possibly should have left it

there, but my mind ran away on me. “We could call it The Tap Dance Brewery,” I commented. “Come and have a dance around the taps at The Tap Dance Brewery” could be our slogan. We could have the Shuffle One

Longer Grammy wait for Simon O’Neill Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton international tenor, Simon O’Neill, will have to wait until April 5 to see if the recording he features in will receive a Grammy award. Initially the Grammys were to be announced in a glittering ceremony in Los Angeles late last month but were delayed due to Covid. Now O’Neill has been told they’ll be staged in Las Vegas early in April. “Sadly because of MIQ I can’t attend the event,” he said. The album of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony – the symphony of a thousand – showcases O’Neill as Dr Marianus plus seven other soloists, a large orchestra and massed choirs. The recording, featuring 345 musicians in all, was made at Walt Disney Concert Hall in May and June 2019. The album has been nominated for Best Choral Performance and Best Engineering Album, Classical. “I’m really thrilled and proud to be part of the recording. It was great waking up to the news when the Grammys

were announced last month,” O’Neill said. “The Mahler Symphony is massive and I was honoured to be part of the amazing soundscape that was captured by Deutsche Grammophon.” O’Neill, who turned 50 in December, is considered New Zealand’s most internationally recognised opera singer since Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Sir Donald McIntyre. He’s described by the international press as “the best heroic Wagnerian tenor to emerge over the last decade.” He leaves this month to take a masterclass of young operatic singers in Melbourne and then heads to Leipzig in Germany to perform the role of Siegmund in Wagner’s The Valkyrie. However, before he goes, he’s planning to visit Ashburton to see his mother and stay the night. “If you see me strolling down East Street, I’ve arrived,” he said. From Leipzig, O’Neill returns for the world premiere of The Requiem by New Zealander, Victoria Kelly, in Auckland and then heads overseas again for concerts and operas in Germany, France, Britain and United States. He’ll be away for eight months until November. But for 36 hours he’s be back in Ashburton this month where his musical career began 35 years ago.

Right – Simon O’Neill relaxes in Ashburton during a visit last year.

Two Hazy Pale Ale. The Heel Down Pilsener. The Fred Astaire IPA. Maybe I oversold the idea or maybe the tap-dancing flashbacks were too gruesome and therefore both Greg and Mark did not share my enthusiasm for the idea.

One Apollo signs off a winner Matt Markham

Vertigo makes them dizzy The locals didn’t have to wait long to make their mark at Methven on Sunday. The closed-doors meeting at the Mt Harding track saw a strong 12-race card programme with only owners, sponsors, licensed persons and a small number of the general public in segregated pods of 100 on course for the day. And they opened their account with a local success when Vertigo broke through for a maiden victory in the first race of the day for trainer and driver, Lawrence McCormick. The showy chestnut had produced some strong recent results after being purchased by McCormick as an unraced horse last year, and with a sweet trip in the trail was always going to be hard to beat. “She’s a nice wee horse, there’s a lot of high speed there – it’s just taken a while to get her sorted,” McCormick said. “But she should do a good job over time, I think. There’s a bit of improvement left in her.”

Vertigo is raced by McCormick, his fiancé, Melissa Barwell, father David McCormick, Craig and Sam Ingold, Morgan Gallagher, Jason Morrison, Andy Morrison, Dave Harvey and Alan Harvey. Sunday’s win came at start 10 for the daughter of Peak, with three minor placings and already $10,000 in stakes. Vertigo’s win was the only local-trained success of the day, but birthday boy Ricky May made his way into the winner’s circle on his home track when he reined home $30-to-one shot, Ruby’s A Delight, during the middle of the day. The day’s feature race, the Little Green Jug was taken out by the very promising filly, Aardie’s Express. Trained by the Stonewall Stud team, who now have a base in Canterbury as well as in the North Island, it was only the filly’s second start at the races, and she delivered a bold display to remain unbeaten for trainers Steve and Amanda Telfer and driver Tim Williams.

The final New Zealand start for one of Ashburton’s better trotters of the past decade ended on a winning note on Saturday when One Apollo was victorious at Invercargill. The Brent White-trained gelding went out on a winning note, as his connections relocate him to Australia where he will link up with the Trevor Munday stable in Sydney – which also happens to be the home of a former White-trained runner, Jazzy Star. White and Munday are good friends, and the decision to move One Apollo appears to be a wise one with a serious pool of trotting talent here in New Zealand to compete with. On Saturday however, that didn’t matter. One Apollo – with Matty Williamson in the bike – found the front and never looked back, winning with plenty in store following a bold, front-running performance. “His work had been good before he came down for the race and Matty did a good job, rolling along and taking the speed out of the others,” White said. Saturday’s win was the 10th of One Apollo’s 55-start career and the victory bumped him up to nearly $200,000 in stakes.

Tech prepare for prelim final Matt Markham

Allenton put runs on the board

Now it’s time to get serious. Another victory on the weekend might have kept the buoyant mood flowing in the Technical Cricket Club, but it’ll be a completely different feel in there this week as the Stags prepare for a showdown with Pleasant Point this weekend. The two sides will meet in the Tweedy Cup preliminary final, with the winner advancing straight through to the season finale, while the other will have to take on the winner of the third and fourth match between Temuka and Celtic. Neither outcome will be of major concern for the Stags but getting a straight run into the final would be advantageous on more than one front. Victory this week would see them having beaten Pleasant Point twice in the space of a month, a huge tactical advantage for any side without taking into account that to this stage, the defending champions have only been beaten once this season. On Saturday, with a huge number of players out of action due to representative requirements and personal reasons, the Stags took a rather new-looking side out into the middle to face Celtic on the Ashburton Domain. But it didn’t change the result with a 34run victory recorded. Batting first, Tech’s openers Jason Morrison and Richard Print put the foot down. After three overs they had 31 runs on the board. Print fell a few balls later, but when Morrison went at the end of the eighth over, there were 75 runs on the board. Late cameos from Bevan Richan (37) and

Bevan Ravenscroft (28) helped lift the tally to 155 by the time they were all out. The Celtic response with the bat was minimal. Two players made it into double figures as Alex Veint and Matt Pawsey ripped through the line-up. Veint, in his first game for the side this season, took an impressive 5-35 from his nine overs in a solid return while Pawsey took 4-23 from his eight. The honour of the last wicket of the day was taken by young Ryan Richan, who stepped into help with numbers for the match. Over on the Ashburton Domain Oval, Allenton took on Pleasant Point. After a frustrating few weeks of cricket the Allenton side put a performance together to be proud of, as they gave themselves a chance with the bat when trying to run down the 227 set by the visitors. Sanjay Undrey and Satveer Singh were the chief destroyers with the ball, taking three wickets each, while Satwant Singh also claimed two as they put a bit of a squeeze on the competition leaders. After struggling to get past 100 against lesser sides over the past month or so, the Allenton batting line-up put the head down and went for 47 overs in response before they were all out. Ranpreet Pannu scored 48 at the top of the order while Satwant Singh put together a well-compiled 58 from 107 balls to give his side a chance. He eventually ran out of partners, however, as his side was all out for 171. It’s a good turn in form for the Allenton side though, with the T20 competition set Tech’s opening batsmen Jason Morrison (left) and Richard Print had plenty to be happy about as they went at a 10-an-over run rate on Saturday. Cameron McCracken and Tessa McCann have been crowned as champions of the Ashburton tennis turf. The duo won their respective Mid Canterbury Tennis Gala Cup singles titles on the weekend adding their name to a long list of former champions in the pinnacle of tennis locally. As part of a huge weekend of play on the newly minted Braided Rivers Community Trust Tennis Centre, the singles champions were crowned as well as doubles and mixed double winners. The weekend began with the mixed doubles on Friday, with eight pairings taking to the court. The father and daughter combination of Neil and Tessa McCann emerged victorious in the event, overcoming siblings, Tyler and Ashleigh Leonard, in the final, winning 9-4. On Saturday the attention turned to singles with some huge matchups on the court from the very first round in the morning. The Women’s A Grade singles was held as a

round robin, with McCann winning all three of her matches to take the title ahead of Ashleigh Leonard. The men’s competition was fierce from the outset. From 12 entrants, Jack Tiller and McCracken worked their way down to the final. Tiller had to work hard to beat Gala Cup king, Rhys Cromie, in the semi-final, while McCracken was forced to dig equally as deep to beat Tyler Leonard. The final proved to be a classic match. McCracken took the first set 6-4, but Tiller fought back to take the match to a decider by winning the second 7-5. In the tie-break, the pair went at each other for 18 points with McCracken emerging victorious 10-8. Tiller got his victory later in the weekend though, when he and Cromie combined to win the Men’s A Grade Doubles. They beat Peter and Tyler Leonard in straight sets in the final on Sunday afternoon. In the Women’s A Grade Doubles, Tessa McCann and Ashleigh Leonard combined to make a formidable pairing and duly delivered beating Jade Brosnahan and Isabella Van Dooren in straight sets. The only other event of the weekend was the A Reserve Men’s singles with Arlo Parsons claiming the title over Sam Kingsbury.

Another weekend, another draw for Mid Canterbury Matt Markham Not quite good enough, but not far off either. That’s probably the best summation of a frustrating weekend of cricket for Mid Canterbury, who came home from Alexandra on Sunday with another draw next to their name in this season’s Hawke Cup. The green and golds were unable to get anything of great value out of their match with Otago Country at Molyneux Park, as their hosts walked away with first innings points in a match which was declared over early on Sunday afternoon. With just one match remaining before the zone playoff, Mid Canterbury are now behind the eight-ball, with Otago Country and Southland setting the pace ahead of North Otago and then

neighbours Mid and South Canterbury. A win on the weekend, or at least first innings points, would have given them a sniff, but they’ll now have to focus on finishing on a high note later this month when they play North Otago in Ashburton. The weekend’s match was one where Mid Canterbury just couldn’t quite get on top. They won the toss and sent Otago Country in to bat, and while wickets came and went the runs kept piling on as the Country batsmen put their heads down and eked out innings after innings. Seven of their batsmen made it past the 20-run mark, and four went above 30 – nothing huge from anyone in particular, but just an abundance of valuable contributions as they worked their way through to 308 before they declared from 85-odd overs out in the middle. Opening bowler Alex Hooper had to wait until late in the innings to get himself on the scoresheet, but did so with gusto, working through the tail end of the Otago Country line-up to take 3-41 from his 11 overs. Spinners Angus Jemmett and Ryan Bell were left to do the majority of the donkey work with the ball, producing almost half of the overs bowled by Mid Canterbury between them. Bell was particularly tough for the Country batsmen to deal with. While he only claimed one wicket from his 22 overs, his 132 balls delivered resulted in 97 dot balls. Jemmett claimed two good scalps near the top of the or-

der on his way to 2-58 off 17 overs, while James Southby also grabbed a brace with two for 33 from his 10 overs. With a big target in front of them and a few hours of play left on Saturday, the Mid Canterbury lads set about trying to build themselves a total and stay in the match. The loss of William Southby and Angus Jemmett within the first 10 overs didn’t help the cause, but strong contributions from Devon Flannery (52) and Des Kruger (45), who combined for an 86 run third-wicket stand, produced hope in the camp. At 155-4 when they were both gone, there was still a chance to try and grab a first innings lead and some valuable competition points, but the Otago Country bowlers put the squeeze on, and Mid Canterbury were all out for 231 on Sunday morning before lunch. With points on the board and the game in their control, the Otago Country batsmen picked up where they left off after lunch, returning out to the middle and playing with freedom, while Mid Canterbury had no answers. A 113-run first wicket partnership rubbed salt into the wound as Country added 208 to their total before the match was officially declared a draw between the two sides. After three matches of the competition, Mid Canterbury are yet to lose a game, but they’re well behind the competition leaders, and not even an outright victory against North Otago in Ashburton later this month will help lift them up into the fold for a playoff spot.

High Country classic hailed a winner Matt Markham Not even the arrival of a red traffic light setting was going to stop the annual High Country Golf Classic from going ahead on the weekend. One hundred players from as far north as Auckland and as deep in the south as Cromwell came to Mid Canterbury for the annual golfing feature, which is held at the scenic Terrace Downs course and also under the mountains at Methven. With 50 teams engaged, tournament organisers were able to keep to the restrictions in place under the red traffic light settings, and while some aspects of the weekend’s tournament were adjusted or removed, everything went off without a hitch. “You couldn’t have asked for a better weekend for it to be honest,” Methven Golf Club co-ordinator, Bruce Dickson said. “The weather was fantastic and there was some very good play out there on both days.” All counted, 19 different golf clubs were

represented at the event, with many wanting to bring more teams and more players to the event in the future. “There’s a really strong demand from our visiting players especially.

“One entrant from Auckland brought down three or four teams and he wants to bring even more in the future. “So the popularity for the event is still there, and we’ve had the good news al-

ready that Terrace Downs have booked us in again for next year, so that’s great.” Play began on Saturday under a stableford format at Terrace Downs for a full round, with entrants split into two pods of 50 across both the front and back nine of the course. Then, on Sunday it was down to Methven for the same again. The father and son combination of Alton Fletcher and Bailey Fletcher-Young emerged victorious, with a combined 154 points for the weekend. The youngest player in the field, Bailey was in good form off his handicap and played a pivotal role in securing the success. For the locals, third was the best result with Wanda Campbell and Hiromi Ikehata producing 142 for the weekend to see them clear in third place. Methven locals, Ross Breach and Mark Breach, were awarded the most honest team award for their efforts. The weekend featured a hole-in-one, with visiting player Tony Carroll landing an ace on the 16th hole at Terrace Downs on Saturday, while local boy AJ Kerr produced one of the holes of the weekend, coming up with an eagle at Methven on Sunday.
