Loving living in Ashburton Daryl Holden

Respected real estate professional Clark McLeod doesn’t want to show his age, but he remembers when house auctions were almost a community event. “I recall when Hastings McLeod Real Estate had regular Saturday morning auctions, moving around from property to property, and whole neighbourhoods would turn up to see what price a property would fetch in their neighbourhood,’’ McLeod said. “Sales data used to be very limited and all sales were published on a microfilm machine, which was mainly used by valuers. The best description of this machine would be like what schools used to use, a backlit overhead projector. I also remember holding a tape measure for dad to measure up buildings for valuation.’’ And dad, as Clark touched on, was his late father Colin McLeod, an inspiring figure, who was something of a real estate pioneer in these parts. He helped found Hastings McLeod Real Estate in the early 1970s and at its peak it operated branches in Timaru, Waimate, Geraldine, Rangiora, Rolleston, Leeston and Oamaru, with the main office in Ashburton. Colin passed away in 2002 when Clark was just 26, but sage advice from his father still rings true today.

Clark, a loose forward, was a member of the 1998 and 1999 Super Rugby-winning Canterbury Crusaders teams and his final professional contract was with Suntory in Japan. Now he owns McLeod Real Estate in Ashburton, a business that turns three in October and which, he admits, has not been without its challenges. “The first house we signed

“My father was strong on principles and values, and full of advice,’’ Clark said. “I did miss not having him around when I was developing into a young adult as he would always have the answers. Sometimes things are not easy, and I guess you just have to figure those things out.’’ Clark had to figure them out a bit earlier than planned, the loss of his father resulting in him retiring from professional rugby to return home and make the most of his univer-

have some of these great people working in our business.’’ Clark also knows they’re fortunate to work and live in a tightknit community. “The town has really great people,’’ said Clark, who’s married to Susie, with children Tom, 10, and Sylvie, 7. “It is nice that there are so many familiar faces everywhere you go. We are very much a trusted community and it is easy doing business with the district based on those trusted relationships.’’ A key spinoff from those close relationships was that there’s always been a willingness to help each other out. It’s what makes Ashburton a little bit special. And that’s party why Clark thinks the Ashburton Guardian’s promotional shop and love local community campaign has been so important. It’s come at a time when the region needed a bit of a pick me up and a reminder about all the good things it has going for it. “It is very important that locals support locals,’’ he said. “Local businesses provide employment for local people, which generates more business in the district. The more business that is done within the district, the better off we all are. When our community supports local business this creates employment and more spending within the district.’’ Not surprisingly, McLeod Real Estate was “100 per cent local’’, according to Clark. And you just know that’s exactly how Colin McLeod would have wanted it to be all those years ago.

Protest: Stop the mandates Cover story

Daryl Holden A Rakaia woman, part of New Zealand’s self-described freedom convoy, says the protest is all about maintaining the right to have a say. Kristen Hammerich supported the convoy on foot as a large fleet of all types of vehicles, many emblazoned with signs blasting the Government and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, crawled through Ashburton late on Sunday afternoon. The convoy was so long that it took an hour to get from Tinwald and past the Walnut Avenue intersection, with hundreds lining the streets in support and many probably as interested observers. Hammerich was proudly there, displaying her signs that read: “Is this the future you want for your kids? And: “We stand with frontline personnel.’’ “It’s just to stop the mandates,’’ Hammerich said of the protest’s aim, which included protecting and maintaining our human rights. “And to let everybody have freedom of choice without any consequences.’’ Vehicles, from trucks to cars to campervans and motorbikes, set out from Cape Reinga in the North Island and from Bluff in the south, starting about 6.30am on Sunday. They’re travelling the length of the country to meet in Wellington today in protest against Covid-19 vaccine rules and public health measures, and other Government decisions and what they have termed censorship. Convoy 2022 NZ, as Sunday’s movement was officially known, followed similar gatherings overseas. In Canada, more than 200 trucks and other vehicles blockaded downtown roads in central

York Times has reported that more than 4.83 billion people worldwide have received a dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, equal to about 63 per cent of the world’s population. “It is because it (vaccine) is still an experimental drug,’’ Hammerich said. “I want to see the results of the experiment before allowing myself to be vaccinated.’’

And Hammerich didn’t have any issue with the use of some very young children to hold placards and show their support for Sunday’s protest through Ashburton. Some of the placards contained inappropriate or obscene language. “I think most of them have probably had their parents talk to them,’’ she said. “I don’t have kids myself.’’

Long wait for Covid booster shots Worth the wait: Some Ashburtonians had to wait for an hour or more, such was the demand at Eastfield Health’s Covid-19 walk-in vaccination clinic on Saturday morning. Surprisingly, it was the only walk-in clinic in operation in Ashburton over the long weekend, with queues out the door at the site in the former Noel Leeming shop in Tancred Street. Some walk-in sites throughout Canterbury reportedly had to turn away people, who have tried to get a drop-in jab since boosters became available to one million more Kiwis. The Government last week announced a reduced interval for the booster shot of three months, down from four months, as it accelerated its vaccine roll-out in response to rising cases of the Omicron variant. The Canterbury District Health Board has now urged people to make an appointment to get their booster.

More disruption at Walnut Ave Malcolm Hopwood There’ll be 24-hour disruption to the planned state highway upgrade at the Walnut Avenue/East and West Street intersection. From this week, Waka Kotahi (NZTA) has started four weeks of night work with a second shift starting at 7pm and ending at

6am. Project manager, Albert Chan, said the night shift will shorten the time it takes to complete the work which is expected to last until November. “We’re undertaking the night work to increase safety for the work crews and minimise the disruption along and close to the state highway,” he said. “Two way traffic will be maintained during the day. At night there’ll be some lane closures, but a stop/go traffic management system will be in place to allow traffic to get through.”

Footpath access around the work site will be maintained, he said. Chan requests drivers, especially local motorists, to be on the lookout for changes in traffic management and follow the signs. He has alerted nearby residents and warns there’ll be noise from trucks, machinery and the crew working overnight and extra light shining from the work site. “Access to properties will be maintained although crews may

need to work in front of driveways from time to time,” he said. Cr Carolyn Cameron, who criticised the way NZTA left the site over Christmas and New Year, is delighted with the decision to double shift. “It’s wonderful if it helps to speed things up and gets us back to normal,” she said. She’s aware some businesses and residents might be disturbed by the evening shift, but points out they’ll be pleased the completion date could be brought forward.

SHORT & SHARP ANZCO fire An electric motor fault at ANZCO on Seafield Road caused a minor fire yesterday morning. The fire, in a by-product room, was extinguished by the company’s sprinkler system. Two fire engines and two tankers from the Ashburton Fire Brigade were called at 6.48am and checked the building, its structure and the electric motor which will require repairs.

Porter’s relief for family reunion Jonathan Leask Caitlin Porter chose to stay abroad during the Covid pandemic, but says she never expected to be not allowed to come home to Ashburton. But now the Porter family were among those globally-distanced families ecstatic with the announcement the borders will be reopening. Caitlin, 29, has been living and working in Vancouver, Canada since 2017 and was thrilled at the early morning message from her mother, Debbie, letting her know the borders were reopening. “I don’t think I’ve ever had mum send me quite so many emojis in one text message, the excitement level in the family chat was wild,” Caitlin said. “To say I am stoked is an understatement.” The last time Caitlin, a former Ashburton Guardian reporter, was home was for a friend’s wedding in January 2020. She said it was her choice to remain living overseas at the outbreak of the pandemic, but as a New Zealand citizen she didn’t expect it to be such a difficult process to return, essentially being locked out of coming home. “I absolutely made the choice to live abroad, for sure, but not being allowed to return home was not something I was prepared for. “Before anyone says ‘you could have or should have packed up everything and returned home in March 2020’, as

idyllic as that sounds that was not feasible for me. “Like so many others I’ve missed a fair few things in the last couple years – funerals, weddings, babies, that I otherwise would have absolutely made the trip home for.” She has been in contact with other stranded Kiwis all excited they will finally have the freedom to come home. Caitlin’s sister Stephanie is also abroad, nursing in Tasmania. Caitlin said the plan was already made for “both of us to hit the homeland this May”. Her parents, Debbie and Grant, were, like most, anxious for the opportunity to see their daughters again and were relieved to hear the border news this week. “Over the last two years, the uncertainty of when you can see your daughters again and having that choice taken away from you, has been heartbreaking. “We are over the moon to know this will be actually happening soon. “There will be lots of hugs and tears, that’s for sure.” And what’ll Caitlin do first when she arrives back in Ashburton? “The first things on my to-do list is squish my family, dig into mum’s baking and eat a Sims’ pie.” There may be more than one pie consumed, but Caitlin said she still plans to return to her life in Canada, working in brand marketing for global cosmetics brand Lush, with a permanent move home possible in the future.

Caitlin Porter is looking forward to a family reunion later this year after it was announced the borders would be reopening, paving the way for a return from her current home away from home in Canada.

Peeti’s antics a massive hit Daryl Holden

Everyone, it seems loves Peeti, the rainbow lorikeet from Allenton. Our Saturday cover story about

the cheeky parrot, who deliberately poops on the family dog and then laughs from his cage, has been a massive winner online. A short video on the Guardian’s Facebook page of Peeti, showing her eating out of the same bowl with the family cat, and then getting pretty excited about it, reached more than 5000 viewers, not to mention the numerous loves, likes and funny

emoji reactions. The story also thrilled Peeti’s owner Kirstin Morgan, who went out and bought 10 copies of the Weekend Guardian as a keepsake. Online, we challenged Ashburtonians to share any funny photos or videos of their pet’s antics. Amy Stringer posted a cute video of her chatty lorikeet, while the photos on this page also caught our eye.

Helping Tonga ‘the right thing to do’ SHOW YOU CARE

Daryl Holden An Ashburton woman co-ordinating a fundraising BBQ for Tongans reeling in the disaster-hit country says it’s simply the “right thing to do’’. Kirsty Naish believed all of Ashburton should care about the devastation in Tonga following last month’s catastrophic volcanic eruption and tsunami that wiped out villages, left thick ash covering rooftops and vegetation, and resulted in three deaths. That’s why she gladly agreed to help out, running a Tongan relief fundraiser involving a BBQ, baking and music at the Ashburton Farmers’ Market this Saturday from 9am until midday. “All funds donated will be used to ship donated supplies to Tonga,’’ Naish said. “The public have been so generous with donating baking and Anzco Foods are lending us their BBQ and have kindly donated meat. “We have been flooded with donations, it’s amazing. Now we just need Ashburtonians to come down to support on Saturday.’’ Ironically, Naish does not have a direct connection to Tonga, but she lived at nearby Samoa for three years. She said Ashburton friends Ana Taufa, originally from Tonga, and Rasela Sa, Samoa, were the key event co-ordinators for Saturday’s fundraiser, arranging all the supplies and shipping to Tonga. “The Kingdom of Tonga is a beautiful island and as neighbours we need to support our Tongan friends,’’ Naish said.

“We have an amazing Tongan community here in Ashburton, and in New Zealand, and they need to know they have our love and support. Especially now more than ever.’’ That help was gaining momentum in Ashburton, with the local Rotary club meeting the cost of two emergency relief kits for Tonga The kits, which cost $600 each, were plastic boxes that contained essential household cooking,

eating, cleaning and clothing items, tarpaulin, tools, toilet and emergency medicines. The boxes could also be used to hold water or food and they would be part of a shipment of 500 being funded by New Zealand Rotary clubs. Roberts wins prestigious award By Pat Deavoll Westerfield dairy farmer Rhys Roberts has won the prestigious 2022 New Zealand Zanda McDonald Award. The chief executive of Align Farms won the award over three other finalists, Katie Vickers, Olivia Weatherburn and Adam Thompson, of whom he said were “all fantastic leaders and people and I hope together they keep chasing their dreams”. The annual award recognises and supports talented young individuals in the agriculture industry from across Australia and New Zealand. Roberts, 34, operates five farms and a market garden for the Align Farms Group. He is currently running a regenerative agriculture project trial, to monitor farm productivity, animal health, human health, and environmental outcomes. His focus on building a “future workplace” has resulted in creating a market garden that feeds his team. All of the team are on fully flexible rosters and can manage their own schedules, choosing shifts that suit them. This frees them up of about 1000 hours combined per year, which they reinvest into the community. Roberts was “very privileged and grate-

ful” to be named the 2022 winner. “It’s a great day for Mid Canterbury agriculture, we’ve got such great leaders throughout our community. They inspire me,” he said on receiving the award. “I didn’t go through the tertiary education system. I went to Telford then share milking and then into management the old-fashioned way. “I guess I had nothing to lose – I don’t have a university education or a family handout,” he said. “It’s good to know that it’s not just mum who thinks I’ve got potential, to be fair,” he said of the win. This year Covid restrictions disrupted the judging process, with the red traffic light announcement moving the award interviews and presentation online, instead of being held in Martinborough. The Zanda McDonald award was launched in 2014 in memory of Australian beef industry leader Zanda McDonald, who died aged 41 after an accident at his Queensland property in 2013. The award comes with a significant prize package that puts the winner in contact with some of the biggest and best agriculture operators in Australasia. It is open to anyone aged 21 to 35 years who lives and works in the agriculture sector in Australia or New Zealand.

Stepping down from Ruralco board BY PAT DEAVOLL After nine years of service Chertsey farmer Gabrielle Thompson has stepped down as director of Ruralco. “I’ve given what I have to give, so it’s time for someone else, with different experiences, to have the opportunity to share,” Thompson said. Elected as the first ever female director, Thompson had witnessed much change within the board. However, it wasn’t about gender, she said. It was about knowledge and perspective. “The board has rotated to achieve diversity, attracting people with different farming backgrounds”. Originally from the North Island, Thompson didn’t grow up on a farm. However, an interest in animals led her to studying veterinary science and she enjoyed success as a vet becoming the owner of a small practice just four years after graduating from Massey. The establishment of a partnership saw the practice expand to five clinics. But eventually, in 2015, she made the decision to sell the business to VetEnt. Selling the clinics meant that she and her husband could concentrate on their farming properties in Dorie, and nearby Chertsey. Thompson was a fierce advocate for the agriculture industry. “New Zealand has a great story to tell. Our farmers understand

sustainability better than anyone because their livelihood, and their intergenerational land, depends on it,” she said. Recently, the Government announced a free trade deal giving New Zealand a head-start in the post-Brexit British market. Thompson hoped that the marketing effort focused strongly on the quality of New Zealand’s farming practices. “We’re leading the way in rotational grazing and water conservation through variable irrigation and the use of tools like moisture probes,” she said. Thompson felt that water schemes had encouraged more progressive farming practices in Canterbury. “We’re probably a long way ahead with our environmental planning, benefiting from 10 years of learning as a region,” she said. As far as a career in agriculture you need to be on your game, she said. “Selling my vet practice to pursue farming was not a step down. Farming takes intellect, talent, and experience. Our mortgages can be huge, with little room for error.” Thompson, who remembered her first board meeting well, said Ruralco continued to mature, exploring a wide variety of opportunities allowing the Ashburton Trading Society to expand beyond market perceptions. So, what next for Thompson? Firstly, she remained a director

Unused water to boost MAR Jonathan Leask Unused water from the Rangitata Diversion Race is planned to be used to boost the Hinds managed aquifer recharge (MAR) project. The Rangitata Diversion Race Management Ltd (RDRML) has been granted initial approval from the Ashburton District Council to reallocate approximately 3 cumecs of unused ‘constrained’ water to the managed aquifer recharge (MAR) project over a three year trial period. The proposal requires a variation to the water supply agreements that RDRML have with irrigation companies MHV Water and Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation Ltd, Trustpower and the council. RDRML will enter into a commercial contract with the Hekeao-Hinds Water Enhancement Trust to supply the constrained water to that Trust for their MAR programme. The original design capacity of the RDR is 28 cumecs, with the size of the eight syphons under the rivers and streams that the RDR crosses being the limiting feature. However there is additional capacity in the first section of the RDR which can convey around 31 cumecs, up to the first syphon at the South Hinds River. That means in the power generation season and when there is low irrigation demand, only 28 cumecs can be conveyed for hydrogeneration leaving around 3 cumecs of RDRML’s consent allocation not utilised. This under-utilised portion is referred to as ‘constrained water’ which Trustpower have first rights to if it can be used for generation which is not possible because of the capacity limit of the RDR. RDRML propose to reallocate the constrained water to the MAR project via the Mayfield Hinds

scheme and the South Hinds MAR site, delivering some to the MAR sites and leaving 28 cumecs

going down to the power station for generation. Trustpower support the con-

strained water being reassigned to MAR for a three year trial. RDRML still need agreement from all of its shareholders to seek a variation to the Water Supply Agreement with Trustpower. Since RDRML’s existing water take consent only provides for stockwater, irrigation and hydrogeneration use, it requires a supplementary use consent to

use the unused water for MAR. A consent application is currently with Environment Canterbury for this supplementary use.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You choose arrangements that serve common interests and friendships with people who have complementary qualities. And you choose your passions based on... the methodology is mysterious, even to you. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): To know requires being open to knowing. You cannot shun, ignore, negate, reject or protect yourself against that you are in the process of understanding. Awareness, by its very nature, is a welcoming state. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): All those things that happened before were happening right now. All the things that haven’t happened yet will also occur right now. To live right now is to live in the only time. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It would seem that we have to fight against the situations we don’t approve of, but to do so only creates more conflict and holds negative feelings in place. What are you willing to understand about it? This is the key. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Social media posts give the impression that everyone is coping beautifully, working efficiently, radiating confidence and living their best life. You know better, and you’ll lead with awareness and compassion. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): No one makes you feel love, annoyance or anything else. Those feelings are a reaction to your thoughts about people. You’ll examine and change your thoughts to cultivate a better mood. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Thoughts cause feelings, and feelings cause thoughts, and then the cycle rolls along. Is it exhilarating? Does it go where you want? Much depends on whether you know how to balance and steer. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You learn much about yourself by interacting with the ones who are attracted to you. Your repeat customers resonate with you for reasons that will be a delight to discover. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): It’s fun to save the day, and you’ll be in just the right place and time with all the right stuff (willingness, awareness, kindness) to do this for someone. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You say yes to what is happening, and that will turn out to be the only word you need. “Yes” will affirm the present, add energy and open the gates to the route of ease. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): It’s believed animals lack rich interior lives, but the time you’ve spent with them has convinced you otherwise. You’ll be favourably impacted by a member of the animal kingdom today. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Silent strangers put you in touch with your expectation and fantasies in a way that relationships with talking people cannot. Magic question: What did you want before you heard what the other person wanted?

NZTA double shifts into next gear W

aka Kotahi (NZTA) probably won’t admit it, but they’ve been listening to local concerns. From this week, they’ve started four weeks of night work to speed up the state highway completion which encompasses Walnut Avenue and East and West Streets. That means a double shift for the next month. For some that’s progress, for others it’s 24 hours of disruption. If you regard it as positive, it could mean the upgrade will be completed by the end of the year. That’s significant for people living in Ashburton and also important for passing motorists who must amount to thousands daily. At the end of last year, Cr Carolyn Cameron expressed disappointment at the eyesore left

Malcolm Hopwood over Christmas and New Year. She hoped NZTA would have scheduled the upgrade better and completed a stage by Christmas. Instead, they were shovel unready and the intersection was left with single lanes, road cones and traffic queues. Cr Cameron pointed to Ashburton’s image suffering. It became the place where motorists snarled to a stop and, instead of enjoying a coffee and admiring the completed CDB and the Christmas lights, they emerged from the other end intent on making up time.

So what’s the message from the second shift? It’s likely to mean NZTA felt the vibes and listened to the discontent. The double shift is one way of saying “we heard you” and we’re as keen to finish it as you are. NZTA has

a reputation to uphold. The other reality is they can’t let it linger through another Christmas/New Year. They’ll earn the anger of passing motorists and daily users such as big rigs and feel the exasperation of

local drivers. What comes between the Rakaia and the Rangitata? Road cones. Ashburton is a place where you break your journey and visit the domain and, if you inquire further, stop for a couple of nights. It won’t happen if the proposed upgrade is still a Transmission Gully away. Neither will it happen when there’s no welcome sign to East Street at either end, offering an alternative exit when you’ve done your retail therapy. Ashburton residents will join NZTA in watching progress with interest over the next four weeks. If there’s little to be seen, then the second shift need to be repeated again over autumn and, if great strides are made, then the end could be seen in the distance and there’s no reason to ease off.

Hooper milestones as Manda said “Time flies when you’re having fun”.

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR

I

t’s been a week of milestones in the Hooper household. Maddy Hooper had her first day of school on Monday and to say she handled it like a boss would be an understatement. She had already been on a school visit and met her teacher, with her Preschool and her teacher had even popped into Preschool on her final week, to make sure she was still all good with the step up the following week. How cool is that! On Sunday we popped into the school, so Maddy could show me the ‘little kids’ playground and her classroom. I did a bit of recording prior to my show on Monday so I could meet Manda and Maddy at Tinwald School for the big occasion and I’m so glad I was there to witness it. She proudly showed me around her classroom and I got to meet her lovely teacher. Shortly after that she gave Manda and I a look as if to say, “what are you still doing here, I got this”. It would be fair to say Mum had more butterflies than child did. That afternoon she arrived home with a new book from Mr Livingstone and a couple of masterpieces she’d whipped up during the day. She was absolutely buggered! She ran over to me, gave me a huge cuddle and said “Did you miss me today when I was at school, Dad? Did you cry?”. I told her, that I did indeed miss her and I may have cried just a wee bit. The other major milestone happened last Thursday and for the record I had remembered before I got a Facebook message from our photographer Toni Sweetman wishing us a happy wedding anniversary. Four years I have been batting out of my league and

Now for something different! The Pillow Fighting Championship crowned its first ever champions Saturday night in Florida, as the children’s pastime was turned into a professional combat sport. The pay-per-view event saw 16 men and 8 women, most experienced in MMA or boxing, but this time competing using a specialised pillow, advance through a bracket style competition. On the women’s side it was Brazilian Istela Nunes who emerged as champion, and the men’s final saw American Hauley Tillman defeat countryman Marcus Brimage. Each winner earned a title belt and $5000. (Feather-weight champs?). And finally. In an attempt to keep you hip, trendy and right up to speed with the cool kids, this week’s top 5 list will hopefully help you on the road to understand abbreviations.

The top 5 incorrect abbreviations 5 WTF: Where’s the Fries 4 TMI: Too Many Idiots 3 ASAP: Add Salt And Pepper 2 MILF: Man I Love Fridays 1 FWB: Fresh White Bait Hope that helps. Morrison rules the roost at Addington Matt Markham

There was a distinct Mid Canterbury flavour to harness racing action at Addington on Friday night. Spearheaded by a four-win haul from John Morrison, seven of the winners at the meeting had a Mid Canterbury connection, including three locally trained winners in Sonoma Tyron, Cranbourne and Franco Josiah. Morrison ruled proceedings across the meeting, with two of his victories coming on board Tony Barron-trained runners. One of Morrison’s biggest supporters, Barron prepared Classy Dancer and the very smart mare Life’s A Beach to win. Life’s A Beach will now head towards the Group One New Zealand Breeders Stakes on Friday night where she will lock horns with class mares Bettor Twist, Belle Of Montana, Darling Me, Need You Now and Allamericanlover.

The win of Boudica during the middle of the night was a dual-role victory for Morrison, who has been caretaker trainer of the mare for Blenheim’s Tony Thomas. He also teamed up with Ashburton trainer, Ben Waldron, to

grab an upset victory with the free-wheeling Franco Josiah. The talented but enigmatic trotter found the front early, and never looked back. “He loves being in front and bowling along, and he’s also a big fan when it’s wet too.

“He just rolls through it,” Morrison said. Earlier in the night, Ricky May made the most of a rare opportunity to sit behind one of the best trotters in New Zealand a winning one, when he guided Muscle Mountain to success for Greg and Nina Hope. Regular driver, Ben Hope, was on the sidelines due to suspension so May stepped in to fill the void and the big trotter rolled past his stablemate, Midnight Dash in the straight to win with authority. Meanwhile, Patrick O’Reilly made his way into the winners’ circle as well when underrated trotting mare Sonoma Tyron led all the way in the junior drivers’ event. In what would have normally been a real family win with niece Sarah in the bike, Ellie Barron played the role of pinch-hitter with Sarah up at Hawera driving there on Friday. Barron pressed the button early and found the front and the pair never looked back winning strongly. It was the third win from 28 starts for the mare, owned by brothers Alan and Ian Neumann.

Where to next for smart pacer Cranbourne Proud Ashburton trainer Brent White will focus on a smaller target before worrying about the obvious bigger one with brave Addington winner Cranbourne. White’s tough pacer led most of the way, even from his 25m handicap to win the Commodore Hotel Pace, the main handicap at Addington on Friday night. To do so he not only had to work early but fend off a spirited mid-race challenge from Classie Brigade that left him a sitting

M8

duck, but at the line Cranbourne was going away from Above N Beyond to win in a slick 3:13.7 for the 2600m stand on a wet track. It was his 10th career success, and first since the Methven Cup in October, as Cranbourne continues to find his way in the open class ranks. Soon trainer White and his owners will need to start making some decisions about when and if they start booking tickets

north, where the real money is in the autumn. “We have had a talk about it briefly and we are not sure,” he says about an Auckland Cup campaign in May. “Part of me thinks hanging around down here and then trying all that stuff next year might not be a bad idea, but then one of the owners points out that when you have a good horse racing well you never know if they will still be next year.”

While he mulls over those options White will instead lower his sights, with Cranbourne still eligible for an up to Rating 90 race at Addington next week, with a free-for-all programmed for his home track at Ashburton later in the month. Cranbourne’s win was White’s third in a week, and second in 30 hours, as Better’s Tart won at Winton on Thursday and One Apollo took the chocolates last Saturday at Invercargill.

SHORT & SHARP

O’Reilly in form

Sarah O’Reilly was in good form on the first day of the Hawera meeting on Friday winning two races and picking up two placings. The talented horsewoman saluted with double-figure priced winner Santanna Mach during the middle of the day and then won the next with Boulton Home. She was set for more success on Day Two of the meeting on Sunday, but racing was abandoned after heavy rainfall in the area over the weekend.

Wet Wingatui Saturday’s feature race meeting at Wingatui was impacted heavily by the wet conditions with a large number of scratchings across the programme. Local hoop, Jason Laking lost three of his rides due to the track conditions including Camino Rocoso in the $100,000 White Robe Lodge. The race was won by the talented Hasabro and jockey Jacob Lowry for former Ashburton based trainer, Andrew Carston.

Spellbound casts magic Nathan Purdon honoured the passing of his legendary grandfather Roy last week with Group One success at Melton on Saturday night. The young horseman prepared Spellbound, who has Mid Canterbury owners in her large syndicate, to win the feature mares’ race of the night with an all the way victory. Purdon’s grandfather – a legend of harness racing – passed away late last week aged 94.

Weight in numbers Warren Stapleton could have a big part to play in tomorrow’s Oamaru Harness Racing club meeting. He’ll line up five runners at the mid-week meeting including the very much in-form Kyran who is knocking on the door of another success. The stable has two talented maiden trotters engaged early in the day with first-starter Notasbadasilook and Superfast Whizz. Tennis action returns to the courts this weekend Matt Markham It’s been a long summer break, but Mid Canterbury tennis kicks back into full gear this week, finally. After the last round of play in 2021 on the weekend of December 11 and 12, tennis went on the back burner, with tournaments and other events held during the down time, but it’s full swing back into interclub this week. Mid Canterbury’s three sides who compete in Tennis Canterbury’s interclub competitions are back on court – although one is officially not in action due to the bye – and Mid Canterbury Tennis interclub on Saturday afternoons is back as well. For the Premier side, who last season made it to the final, it’s a chance to start again. They had a horror start to the season, with the opening six rounds netting just the one victory in a string of frustrating losses that left the team’s leader, Jack Tiller taking on the brunt of the responsibility. “I just wasn’t hitting it right, and that flowed down through the team – I took a lot of the responsibility,” he said. “But we’ve had a good break – we’ve refreshed and refocused and I’ve been hitting balls as much as I can and we’re looking

Fresh start for Premier side in 2022 forward to getting back into the swing of it again.” The side takes on the second-placed Cashmere team this weekend in the opening round for the year. It will be a tough challenge. Cashmere have lost two matches thus far from their six games and look title contenders, but with a complete performance there’s enough encouraging signs there. Team member Cameron McCracken will hit the ground running fresh off his Gala Cup singles win, while Tiller finished runner-up to him in the same tournament. The Mid Canterbury Division One side also get back into action on Sunday this week. They sit second in their competition having lost just the one game from five rounds of play with two of their matches also abandoned due to rain. They’ve shown they are right in the hunt for a title shot too, and on form they should start on the right foot this weekend against Te Kura Hagley, who are yet to get a win on the board. The Division Two side who endured a tough start to the season, winning just one of their first six matches, will sit out the opening round of the year with the bye.

Meanwhile, back on home soil at Walnut Avenue, it’s all on for young and old in the Mid Canterbury competitions.

A Grade returns with the competition leaders Team Head taking on Team Yonex, and the second placed Team Babolat playing

the winless Team Wilson side. The weekend also sees the return of A Reserve action, and also Junior Interclub.

Bowls action ramps up as season end nears Matt Markham

As the business end of the lawn bowls season fast approaches, a number of major events on the annual calendar are set to kick into gear in the coming weeks – including the most prestigious of them all. This weekend clubs from around the district will send forth the best of their best to compete in the Gala and Challenge Cups as well as a the Premier and Prestige events – the pinnacles of interclub rivalry in Mid Canterbury. Played across two greens on Saturday players will be in action in both events which are looked upon by clubs and players as the main titles to win each bowling season. Then on Sunday, it’s the qualifying stage of the prestigious Lowry Cup singles for the men. Mid Canterbury’s major singles event each season, the Lowry Cup brings together the best players in the district as they strive to qualify for the post-section stage of the competition. Two-time winner Brentton

Donaldson will be back to defend his title after he was victorious last year against club-mate John Kewish in a great final at Methven. Post-section play this year is at Methven and Allenton. The women’s version of the Lowry Cup, the Nan Marsh Ladies Singles has also returned to the calendar after a number of years’ absence. Qualifying for that event will be held at both Rakaia and Ashburton with the finals set to be held later in the month. Meanwhile, the qualifiers for the Mid Canterbury Junior Singles have been found, with the post section for the event still to be determined. Twenty-four players from across the region stepped on to the greens to compete in four rounds of qualifying matches, with nine players advancing through to the next stage. Craig Kellett, Cory O’Connor, Gus Horrell, Mick Buchanan, Donalda Watson, Liam O’Connor, Kelvyn O’Connor and Wayne McCarthy did the necessary to qualify. The Mid Canterbury Sub Centre are set to advise of a date for the post section and finals in the coming weeks.

The women’s version of the Lowry Cup, the Nan Marsh Ladies Singles has also returned to the calendar after a number of years’ absence.

6-Hour race canned

Mountain Bike Ashburton confirmed late last week that their annual 6-Hour Mountain Bike race, held on the Ashburton Bike track near the river has been cancelled for this year. After a tough 12 months for the club following the massive clean-up job after the floods as well as the other issues and restrictions around the country currently, the decision was made to take the event off the calendar and point would-be competitors towards starting their training early for the 2023 event which could end up being one of the biggest yet.

Footballers wanted The Mid Canterbury United Football Club have put the call out for more female players to come and give the game a go. The club’s senior women’s team are on the look out for new players to join them for the 2022 season and aren’t worried about any levels of experience, just players who are keen to play. The team meets each Wednesday at Argyle Park from 6.30pm.

Centennial cancelled

Craig Kellett was one of nine players to qualify for this year’s Mid Canterbury Junior singles.

The Lauriston Cricket Club were forced to postpone their centennial celebrations for this year in the wake of the restrictions put in place due to Covid. The historic club was set to celebrate 100 years over the long weekend with a feature invitational T20 match on Friday night, before an official event at the Hotel Ashburton on Saturday evening with Sir Richard Hadlee as the guest speaker, followed by a Family Fun Day at the club on Sunday. A new date for the celebrations is yet to be confirmed.

Wet weather halts weekend’s Tech Stags to play major cricketing action semi-final against Temuka Matt Markham The weekend’s rain was the only winner in cricket action, with not a single ball bowled. All age group cricket, which was set to restart for the new year, in Mid Canterbury was cancelled on Friday afternoon due to ground conditions, and late on Friday the South Canterbury Cricket Association pulled the pin on Saturday’s senior cricket. In what was supposed to be a huge day for the Tech Stags as they took on defending champions Pleasant Point in the preliminary final, which would have seen the winner advance straight to the final in a fortnight – the Stags instead stayed at home and will now prepare for a major semi-final in a fortnight. “After further inspections of pitches, outfields and potential artificial pitches it has been decided to can this weekend’s senior matches,” SCCA said on Friday evening. It means that the next phase of the playoffs in the Tweedy Cup are

determined by points earned during the regular season. As top qualifiers Pleasant Point will advance straight to the grand final while the Stags will meet Temuka, who finished third, in the major semi-final. Both the major semi-final and the final are set down for the weekend of February 19 and 20. The Stags and Temuka will play on Timaru’s Aorangi Oval with the final at the same venue the next day – potentially meaning a return trip to South Canterbury for the local side. The 50-over format takes a break this week with the competition’s senior sides turning to the T20 format of the game for two rounds. Mid Canterbury-based sides Tech and Allenton will lock horns at the Ashburton Domain on Thursday night and then they’ll both travel to Timaru on Saturday to play. Allenton will take on Temuka while Tech will play Star/Celtic in another match. The competition resumes after the final of the Tweedy Cup with another four rounds which will be played on both Thursday nights and Saturdays before the finals early in March.

McLeod features in narrow pre-season Crusaders loss Matt Markham Mid Canterbury’s Dallas McLeod made a strong showing in his first appearance for the Crusaders this year, during their annual pre-season hit-out against the Highlanders in Oamaru last week. McLeod was named in the starting 15 for the first half of the match, with an entirely new team stepping onto the paddock in the second. The Highlanders won the match with a late penalty goal to Marty Banks which put them in front 20-19, after the Crusaders had fought back from a 7-17 deficit at the halftime break. McLeod was prominent in the first half, and provided the only moment of joy for the red and blacks. In horrific playing conditions due to the weather, the forward packs were the dominant forces in the match, but McLeod bucked the trend late in the game’s first half, exposing a weakness in the Highlanders

defensive line to burst through a gap and run 30 metres to score, with Fergus Burke adding the extras. The Highlanders scored points in the first half through Mosese Dawai and Liam Coltman with Mitch Hunt in good nick with the boot landing two conversions and a penalty. A Crusaders penalty try early in the second half tightened the scoreline and then a try to Simon Hickey put them in front 19-17. After looking unlikely to score for most of the second half, the Highlanders got into the Crusaders territory and managed to work up a penalty, which Banks calmly slotted through the posts to put them in front again, from where they were able to round out the match. The Crusaders will play their second pre-season match this weekend against the Hurricanes at Blenheim’s Lansdowne Park on Friday night. In other pre-season clashes over the weekend the Chiefs looked in good early form beating Moana Pasifika 61-7, while the Blues were able to get on top of the Hurricanes, winning 2821.

Wanaka’s flying Olympic Kiwi History making Zoi Sadowski-Synnott believes momentum can take her to a second Winter Olympic gold medal, but only if she can come down from winning the first. New Zealand’s first Winter Olympics gold-medal winner said she will need to regather herself for the big air competition, the event she won bronze in at the 2018 Games. But she sounded confident of landing another gold medal early next week after her slopestyle triumph in Beijing. “I feel like I’m a bit of a momentum competitor – every season where I start well, it carries through,” she said. “Hopefully I can take that into the big air. But this will be a hectic come down – I hope I can keep my head in it.” Sadowski-Synnott’s growing world star-status has seen her Instagram followers jump from about 84,000 to 113,000 in a day. The newly-crowned Olympic slopestyle champion is hoping to inspire another generation of snow athletes, but she says the sport could be very different by the time they get to the top. Sadowski-Synnott could feel the “waves of support” coming from New Zealand and the Wanaka star was flattered at being called the ‘Flying Kiwi’ on social media. The 20-year-old knew she had made history from the moment of landing her third and final run in Beijing. “I knew if I landed that run I’d come away with gold.

“It was complete elation because it took so much to put that last one down,” she said. It propelled her past the United States’ Julia Marino and into the Kiwi sports pantheon, but at the age of just 20 she obvi-

ously has a long way to go. And so does a sport that she is playing a huge part in re-shaping with more extreme moves. “When I was younger I looked up to the female snowboard Olympians before me, and now I hope to have that same impact

“There’s no limit at the moment.” On hearing that she was being dubbed the Flying Kiwi the Wanaka wonder said: “I’m pretty flattered – that sounds pretty sick. “I don’t even know how to describe it ... like throwing a Kiwi across the room. I’m pretty stoked. “Honestly, I’d dreamt about it before coming and words can’t really describe the huge proudness to represent New Zealand and wear the fern. “I’m just stoked how it went today. “I knew if I landed that run I would be in the top spot. After falling on the third feature of my second run I definitely felt frustrated. “But I had a third run and that’s all I needed – I only needed two to do it. “I spoke to my family and they’re pretty stoked ... they had a couple of drinks to celebrate.” Sadowski-Synnott hopes the process takes care of her big air gold medal hopes. “I’m just hoping to land the Sadowski-Synnott said: “It’s come pretty tricks I’ve set out to do,” she said. “I’ll soak it all in for the next day or two far and it’s exciting to be part of it. “Every single event I feel every girl is get- then get back into competition mode ... ting pushed harder and harder, aiding the and maybe get back training on the 11th (Friday). progression. “Actually, I’ve got no idea. “It’s exciting to see where the next few “I just go where I’m told.” years takes us.
