John has been needing life-saving heart surgery since March. Now enough is enough and Carol has begun protesting outside hospitals in the hope of being heard and saving her husband.

While dairy farmers Geoff and Robyn Baker bought hens as an environmentally-friendly solution to their grass grub problem, the recent nationwide egg shortage has seen the chickens looked at in a new light.

Until buying Mountain View Eggs in June last year, the Bakers knew little about the chicken industry and selling eggs.

They mostly planned on using the hens as part of their regenerative farming solution.

“They blend in quite well with the farm,” Baker said.

“We are trying to run our farm in a regenerative model, and it fitted in quite well, to clean up a few bugs, and put a bit of fertility into the ground,” he said.

One of the bugs that Geoff is trying to remove is the grass grub which has plagued some of the fields.

“Hopefully we will work on the grass grub, we have quite a grass grub problem. We have tried sprays in the past, but we found it didn’t work.”

He said they had been thinking about hens for some time, but had to wait for the opportunity to buy an established business.

“That was probably where we started thinking about hens, doing something different thinking outside the box and giving something a go.”

Baker wants the farm, which produces 4000 free-range pasture eggs every day, from his 5000 hens, to operate as a standalone business.

“A lot of the hens are new so we are averaging 80 per cent output, 2000 of the hens are new, so in about three weeks will be at that 5000 number.”

Six months on, Baker’s goal for this year is to break into the supermarket business, having just

done local supplies up until now.

“We’ll start getting into that, at the moment it has just been cafes and locals.

“We are a supplier to Bidfood now and have done so for six weeks.”

For Baker, he has chosen the right time to head into the supermarket business with supermarkets looking for more farm fresh eggs following a ban on battery cage eggs coming into force.

Along with the ban, Foodstuffs, which operates a range of supermarket brands including New World and Pak ‘n Save, are planning to go completely cage-free by 2027.

“We have to make money out of it, but who knows what will happen in the future,” Baker said.

“We are at 5000 (hens) now and we will go with that for another six months.”

Anxious long wait for surgery

For one Ashburton couple, every day is filled with stress and anxiety as they wait for urgent heart surgery.

Carol Bryan now gets anxious every day wondering if her husband John will even make it to the heart operation.

“He’s only 73, and if he gets this sorted he should be able to enjoy many more years to come,” Carol said.

“The way he is now I’m just unsure whether he’ll make it to the operation.”

He’s only 73, and if he gets this sorted he should be able to enjoy many more years to come. The way he is now I’m just unsure whether he’ll make it to the operation.

To help spread the message Carol has started to protest outside Christchurch and Ashburton hospitals on behalf of her husband who was diagnosed with aortic stenosis in March last year, with the doctors pushing for an immediate operation then.

“I’m out here because he can’t be,” Carol said as she spent the day outside Ashburton Hospital.

“He had been having issues since 2014 but was officially di-

agnosed in March and the doctors pushed for surgery to happen, but it was declined.”

Now Carol and John have been left waiting until at least June as the health system continues to grapple with staffing shortages.

As each day passes John’s condition worsens with him often

in and out of the hospital in Ashburton and Christchurch, with him suffering dizziness and fainting among other debilitating symptoms.

“We go to A&E often, so we are overnight and then get told to go home the next day with no solution.”

“Since March his condition

has declined rapidly and now he spends a lot of time in bed and struggles to do much.”

While outside Ashburton Hospital Carol has had multiple nurses come and say hi on their way past, sharing her concerns.

“I really do feel for the doctors and nurses working in the hospital who can’t complete oper-

ations because they don’t have the staff or the resources.

Even when June comes around they have not got a confirmed date for the operation, which has Carol concerned that it may get pushed again.

“They’ve got no money, no staff, and no beds, so who knows how long it will be.”

Pothole patches double

in May and June 2021.

The high number of pothole fixes should serve as reassurance to the community that the council is actively tackling the problem – the district’s biggest problem according to the annual resident survey results.

5917 in 2021 and then doubled in 2022.

Almost as many potholes were filled in 2022 as in the previous three years in the Ashburton District.

The Ashburton District Council filled 12,074 potholes in 2022, twice as many as the 5917 in 2021, and only just under the combined 13,775 from 2019 to 2021.

Council infrastructure and open spaces group manager, Neil McCann, said the higher figure reflected a significant increase in potholes following the significant rainfall and flooding

“Council put all the extra money in to do exactly that and hopefully people can see the results.”

McCann said the colder and wetter months, typically June to August, usually have the highest spikes in pothole counts as the weather conditions are not favourable for permanent pothole repairs.

That was highlighted following the one-in-200-year rain event that ravaged the district’s roading network.

The number of pothole repairs jumped from 3985 in 2020 to

There is likely some variance in the way the pothole fixes were recorded with a change of contractor, McCann said, with Fulton Hogan replaced in 2020 by HEB Construction who was awarded the council’s $30m five-year road maintenance and operations contract.

McCann said that the temporary pothole repairs made, the holding patch until a major crew can come in and fix it, cost

around $125,000 a year.

“This is part of the $1.65 million for sealed road repairs, including more permanent repairs such as dig-outs and cement stabilisations.”

The council only pays for the temporary pothole repair in the first instance, and any repeat temporary fix is at the contractor’s cost.

McCann said in the current financial year there is also $2.7m for resealing to prevent potholes from occurring, with 58 per cent ($1,566,000) completed by mid-December.

Then there is the $3.75m for complete road reconstruction, which McCann said includes the extra $1.7m the council put in to address the roading issues, with 51 per cent ($1,900,000) completed by mid-December.

Huge network

The Ashburton District has the fifth largest roading network in the country with 2619 km of roads, made up of 1518 km of sealed and 1102 km of unsealed road, as well as 185 bridges and 254 km of footpaths.

He said the contractors are busy working on the summer reseal and reconstruction programme, which will be completed by March.

Pool maintenance under way at EANC

EA Networks Centre enters its annual maintenance phase, with work starting on the splash deck today.

The splash deck area of the leisure pool would be closed for a few days while water toys and features were replaced, Ashburton District Council’s people and facilities group manager, Sarah Mosley, said.

The leisure pool itself, the lap pool, and toddler pools will all remain open.

“We’ll have the splash deck area fenced off for about a week and we’ll be fitting some very cool new water equipment,” Mosley said.

The road and drop-off area directly in front of the centre’s main doors and the café’s outdoor entrance will also be closed for two weeks from January 16, while contractors make safety improvements to the kerbing after trip hazards were identified.

The driveway off River Terrace

and the car park area are not affected.

“We are also putting in new

bollards, but there will still be pedestrian access through the work area at all times for people

who are using the centre.”

The stadium area will then close temporarily for full floor

resanding from January 23.

Mosley said the stadium was a high-use part of the facility and the floor would be sanded to remove marks and scratches, and lines will be restored.

“This work will take two weeks, so we expect to have the courts open again on February 7.

“The stadium is a pretty busy space when it comes to organised sport, so we have chosen to do this work at the quietest time.”

Those playing summer league netball will be amongst the first on the new surface when their competition starts mid-February.

The centre’s holiday programme for 5-13 year olds begins on January 9, and staff are also supervising activities and swimmers at the Tinwald outdoor pool, which is open from noon until 7pm daily throughout January.

Challenge for drama students

Danny and the Divas turn it on

Blue skies, after miserable weather, greeted the performance by Danny and the Divas on Sunday.

American tenor, Daniel Rodriguez, and family members, Marla Kavanaugh and Kathi Craig, presented a programme of opera, musical theatre and popular song to an audience of more than 100 people who sat outdoors among the vines to enjoy the event, held at Terrace Croft.

Rodriguez is known as America’s Beloved Tenor, and Kavanaugh recently performed in the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo, which has been featured on TV and in cinemas.

Craig has starred in operas and recitals in both New Zealand and the United States.

Rural

Sponsor a School Programme that granted more than $140,000 nationwide last year.

ANZCO Foods works with local dairy farming families who nominate a rural primary school to receive a donation from the company that is linked to supply.

In Mid Canterbury, Dorie School and Carew Peel Forest School were donation recipients.

Dorie School used their $5500 to purchase literacy resources which will be used by both students and teachers that principal Anthony Dorreen said will make a huge difference to their school programme.

“We have been able to purchase additional classroom resources to support our structured literacy approach,” Dorreen said.

“This includes decodable readers and story books that reflect the phonic letter sequences taught, as well as additional resources to support our teachers.”

At the other end of the district, Carew Peel Forest School received $5300 which will be used to fund upgrades to the school swimming pool.

Principal Craig Sedgwick said the pool becomes the hub of the rural community during the summer months.

“We open the pool to the locals during summer and it becomes a community meeting spot and gathering space so it’s great that we’re able to refurbish the facil-

“Many

grant families who haven’t had a chance to learn to swim previously, so it is a hugely important facility.

“With the national drowning statistics continuing to increase each year it’s important that all kids learn how to swim and it’s also important that locals have a fun place to gather together during the holidays.”

This year’s sponsorship means ANZCO has now contributed more than $1.3m to rural schools since the programme started in 2011.

ANZCO Foods head of livestock Shannon Parnham said the company gets a huge amount of satisfaction from the annual Sponsor a School Programme.

“We always get a buzz to see how the schools use the funding as each school makes their own decisions regarding how the money will be spent.

“It’s great to see rural schools, in the regions where we operate, receiving money to purchase school items that might otherwise not be available.

“We hear from the schools that many of the projects funded are used by the wider rural community during summer months, so the sponsorship also benefits a wider group than school pupils,” Parnham said.

Doing the sun dance

Mid Canterbury farmers are doing a sun dance as they prepare for the harvest.

One of those farmers is Federated Farmers arable chair Darrell Hydes, who began his harvest on Friday.

“We just started with the rapeseed today after waiting for the moisture to come down to 9 per cent,” Hydes said.

He said farmers are looking for a good year this year, after a difficult season last year due to rain disrupting harvest, delaying getting the crops out of the ground, and reducing the yield.

“We need some good fine settled weather, most of the crops are at the stage where they don’t need any more rain.

“Last year was disastrous with all the rain.”

One crop that has suffered is the white clover, which struggles with the rain as leaves keep growing, and the flowers get trapped under the leaf.

Along with a rough 2022, Hydes said that like many industries farmers are also battling with rising costs.

“A big issue for arable farmers is the rising costs, everything has got more expensive, seed fertilisers, diesel, rates, but the sale price for crops has stayed the same,” Hydes said.

While Hydes had got his harvest under way, Mount Somers arable farmer David Clark still had some waiting to do.

“We are still about 10 days away from getting under way,” Clark said on Friday, adding that it will depend on the weather.

Along with Hydes Clark is hoping for some good Canterbury sunshine.

“We need to go back to a traditional Canterbury hot, dry summer.

“Otherwise, it will start to have an impact on yield,” Clark said.

“Potentially harvest looks promising, but it’s never a good harvest until it’s in the bag.

“A good harvest has to be harvested.”

“If this weather pattern (wet, humid conditions) was to carry on, we would have a major problem.”

Clark said conditions this season have been particularly wet.

“We haven’t had to irrigate since November.”

Clark has range of crops in the ground many of which will head offshore.

“The peas go to Asia to be eaten as a snack food, the canola goes to Europe, the radish goes to the northern hemisphere.

Despite all the exports some of Clark’s crops do stay in New Zealand, with all the grain staying in the country.

But before Clark can think about where the crops are going they need to come out of the paddock first.

Road toll figures horrifying reading

Let’s start with quite a big number – 378 to be precise.

That’s how many people died on New Zealand roads last year, which was the highest national road fatality rate since 2018. That 2022 toll was 60 more than the previous year.

Three of those 2022 fatalities happened on Mid Canterbury roads in separate single death crashes.

Whatever way you want to look at it, and regardless of how you spin the numbers and the annual comparisons to suit, this is grim reading. It says that more than one person died on average every day for the whole of 2022. Read that again because it has to sink in.

Yes, that seems such a number to get your head around so, to help with that, imagine all the people shopping at a couple of our supermarkets all together at the busiest time, and then add

some more, and you might go close to that number. Now imagine they’re all dead. That’s the grim reality of it all.

The fatalities rightly capture all the attention, but the number of people who survived car crashes is just as alarming.

Those 2022 crash survival numbers aren’t out yet but in 2021 it was a staggering 48,000, according to the Accident Compensation Corporation. And the cost of repairing and rehabilitating those 48,000 people was over $560 million. That’s horrifying with a capital H, so what are the powers-that-be going to do about this?

The Government, through the Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency and the police, are banking on the successful delivery of its road to zero strategy to drop annual road fatalities. They aim to have small annual reductions, leading up to a 40 per cent drop in death and serious injuries by 2030. By 2050, the

of installing more median barriers, reducing speed limits and increasing safety cameras and police officers on the road.

Though a 40 per cent reduction sounds impressive, it would still leave us with 226 people dead, based on the 378 from last year. And, sorry, but that’s still way too high. And isn’t the road to zero

let’s not immediately focus on new drivers as the target group in all of this. What about the millions of already licensed drivers on the roads, annoying tailgaters, slow drivers, those non-indicators, older folk carrying out painfully slow U-turns without checking if the road is clear or those who simply don’t bother indicating at all.

In Ashburton, we’ve got all of those and it’s nothing short of a miracle that more deaths have not resulted in our district.

plan hopes that nobody would be killed on our roads.

Well, I think we can dismiss the 2050 plan as nonsensical and simply unobtainable, so let’s focus firstly on the 2030 target. Experts tell us that would be achieved through a combination

implementation missing a key factor, that of driver education and developing better behaviour behind the wheel?

Because the threat of enforcement has never been enough of a deterrent, so we must improve our driving habits and skills. And

We can’t forget that stupidity and negligence aren’t age restricted and that driver education and training shouldn’t end after being issued a driving licence.

That, as far as I can see, is probably one of the biggest problems that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, in a year’s time we’ll again be talking about another uncomfortable and harrowing national road toll figure.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The silliness of life will be apparent to you. You will feel that you are in your most natural state when you are playfully interacting with the inherently nonsensical aspects of daily life.

TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Even though you get an immediate feeling about your next move, you still take the time to think things through. Assumptions are the downfall of smooth operations. Ask questions.

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Things look different in a rearview mirror. Some things look better back there and others look worse. Memory is a story we tell ourselves, and it doesn't always serve the facts.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Hunger is a powerful driver that can sharpen and power us to do things we wouldn't typically think to do under more satiated circumstances. You might be surprised at what you're hungry for today.

LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You'll turn sadness into joy. It's not a pancake-flip move that happens all at once and you're suddenly on the other side. This is the slow but sure cake bake. Give it time and all will rise, lighter and sweeter.

VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): While it would be convenient to give everyone the same automatic responses, it's almost impossible to do this. You care too much. You see people as individuals, each with a unique need deserving of personal attention.

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Oscar Wilde said that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught. Surely, it depends on the lesson, the teacher and the student. Today, you'll be keenly aware of how learning styles, like values, vary widely.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Offense will be forgiven, injury pardoned, wrongs made right. You don't have to agree on things to make them better. Silence is the perfect expression for a multitude of messages today.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Make sure everyone has the same information. Let the doubters try and poke holes in the plan. The plan can only get stronger for having been put to the group mind. The best groups are respectful and diverse.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): As you go about your duty, you leave room for life to take things in a different direction. Your open spirit changes the plot. There's no such thing as too many supporters, pick them up everywhere you go.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Lovely things are made better through the people who can see and celebrate them. Nothing is inherently beautiful, it's made that way in the mind of a person who experiences it as such. You are such a person.

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The people who happen to be around you now are there for a reason. Some of them are attracted to the same things, or could be responding to the pull of your energy. You're all in it together.

Speed targets ahead for Better’s Tart

Double continues strong start to the year

A tilt at the Southern Belle Speed series awaits talented Mid Canterbury pacing mare, Better’s Tart.

An emphatic winner of the Roxburgh Cup last week, the Brent and Tim White-trained mare has remained in the deep south and will head to this week’s Northern Southland meeting to try and qualify for the rich series final which finishes in April.

The series is open to all four-year-old and older mares up to Rating 70 as at January 2022, with points accumulated through the heats to determine the make-up of the final field which will race for the $30,000 final at Winton.

Last week’s Roxburgh win was the sixth of the mare’s career so far, and co-trainer Tim White said his father deserved a lot of the credit for her development and the way she’s been racing.

“Dad has placed her a treat and been really patient with her,” Tim White said.

“The owners have been super to deal with; we decided to take out time with her.”

Stable employee Kimberly Butt handled the driving duties last week, settling the mare off the pace before launching on the final bend to run down the pacemaking Mach Quillan, who looked to have the field in trouble turning for home.

“It was one of those races where she was about five back on the fence, and I was think-

ing do I, or don’t I, come out.

“I thought we have come all of this way – and Tim and Brent have done a super job with her

burgh was just one leg of a successful trip south for many harness racing locals for the annual Central Otago circuit.

I thought we have come all of this way – and Tim and Brent have done a super job with her – so I thought we would get out and see if someone comes around – and they did

Ricky May (Man United) and Sarah O’Reilly (Mixed Faith) both picked up driving wins at

the Central Otago meeting at Omakau, while John Morrison both trained and drove Jimmyray to win on the same day.

At Cromwell on the grass last Friday, trainer/ driver Lawrence McCormick grabbed a winner on his annual pilgrimage, winning with Vertigo for a big group of local owners, while May grabbed another win for the week with Jimmy James Maguire.

Dave Mitchell finished the circuit with success when Asian Elvis was an impressive winner of the last of the day.

Ricky May kept up a strong start to the new racing season with a winning double on Sunday at Motukarara.

After picking up a brace of winners and multiple placings on the Central Otago circuit, May returned to Canterbury on the weekend, and was straight back to work with two winners on Sunday.

He’s now claimed four wins for the season, and all four have come courtesy of good friend, Brendon Hill.

Sunday’s winners were Sargent Best and Matador, with the former impressing May after coming from near last on the home bend to win by a small margin.

“It was a good effort,” May told HRNZ.

“Any horse that’s come from last at Motukarara has done a good job.”

Matador was a slightly easier watch for punters, clearing wheels at the right time and charging through to pick up a much-overdue maiden success.

“He’s a funny horse but he felt good and sprinted well once the gap opened for him.

“I thought he was a bit overdue.”

As well as his two winners, May also picked up three other placings during the day’s racing.

He wasn’t the only local in the winners’ circle at The Mot on Sunday either.

Gerard O’Reilly picked up a win in the sulky on the Geoff and James Dunn-trained Topaz, and Simon Adlam claimed victory with his five-yearold mare, Itz Magical Meg.

Driven by Tim Williams, the mare capped off some strong recent form to scoot along the inside and win strongly – the second win of her career.

Waite shines in 2023 opener

Emma Waite kicked the year off in the best possible fashion, claiming victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, 36km handicap event around the Winchmore Church block on Sunday.

Waite and her co-markers worked hard to find the front and stay away from the chasing bunch that got within a second of them on the finish line.

Michelle Knight will be rapt with her first-up ride for the season, finishing strongly to secure the second place spoils.

Nigel Chatterton and Mark Smitheram carried on their good run of form with solid third and fourth places respectively.

Gary Weston led the chasing group in with his trademark sprint to claim fifth, with Nick Grijns rounding out the top six.

Back marker Michael Audeau rode the course in 47.40 to lift fastest time honours.

Kyle Gray and Thomas Audeau recorded second and third time.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 18km handicap event.

Louie Audeau made it a great day for Team Audeau, producing his best race of the season to record the victory and in doing so he also lifted fastest time honours.

Ryan Gallagher ensured a grandstand finish, pushing Louie right to the line with a strong sprint to take second place.

Honor Bradford was in the thick of the finish to take third place with Thomas Stevenson and Charlotte Neil filling the top five.

Brian Ellis claimed division 2 honours, getting up over Allan Johns on the line.

Next week the club will contest a 45km handicap event on the Christies Road block.

The image was taken in 1905 with the club name, H.F.C engraved on the ball.

The search is still on for the local rugby team with no name, or names.

Late last year the Ashburton Guardian first published a photo, discovered by Robin Meaclem when clearing out a family member’s home.

The image came with no information, or no clues as to its origin or what it actually details.

And Meaclem wants to rectify that.

So, we’re sharing the image again today in the hope that one of the Guardian family may know a little more about the image, or any of the history behind the team or individuals depicted in it.

“We have no knowledge of the photo or the players,” Meaclem said.

“We wish to know who the

What leads to the belief that it is of an Ashburton-based rugby side is that the card around the image has Halma’s Studio Ashburton marked on it.

Meaclem contacted the New Zealand Rugby Museum to see if they were able to help with the quest.

They confirmed that in 1905 there were three clubs that began with the letter H – Hinds, Hampstead and Hakatere.

The Hakatere club, they were able to confirm through their records, was successful in winning in a sub-union competition around 1905 or 1906, leading to the understanding that the team pictured is most likely to have been of players from that club.

Do you know anything about this image?

National glory elusive for local bowlers

In the pairs, Allenton’s Les Fickling teamed up with Shane Bell of Christchurch, and the duo worked their way through the last 64 before they were exited from the tournament by Black Jack, Mike Kernaghan and his partner.

Bracewell returns to Black Caps fray

ready have in the squads for Pakistan and India.

Pace-bowling all-rounder Doug Bracewell has been called up to replace the injured Matt Henry in the Black Caps one-day squads for Pakistan and India.

Henry was ruled out of the tour with an abdominal strain sustained on the final day of the drawn second test in Karachi, with the injury requiring two to four weeks of rest and rehabilitation.

Bracewell, who has 68 international caps to his name, most recently featured in the Black Caps’ home ODI series against Netherlands last April.

The 32-year-old has been in good form with bat and ball on the domestic scene for the Central Stags, starting the season as one of the leading wicket takers in the Plunket Shield and more recently showing his ability with the bat, making key contributions for the Stags in the Dream11 Super Smash.

Coach Gary Stead confirmed Bracewell would arrive in Karachi tomorrow local time, meaning he missed the opening ODI against Pakistan.

Stead said Bracewell was a natural replacement for Henry in the ODI squad.

“Doug is a quality bowler with a lot of experience, and we feel his skills best complement the bowling mix we al-

“He has experience across all three formats at international level, has experience in the subcontinent, and has already shown his range of skills this season.”

Stead expressed sympathy for Henry, who picked up the injury on the final day of a hard fought test in Karachi.

“Matt has been one of the leaders of our ODI attack for a number of years and I know he’s disappointed to be missing out because of injury.

“With important home series coming up, it’s vital he has time to recover properly over the coming weeks.”

Otago Volts bowler Jacob Duffy will replace Tim Southee in the ODI squad in India but was unavailable to travel any earlier as a replacement for Henry, as he is recovering from Covid-19.

Auckland Aces bowler Kyle Jamieson (back) and Wellington Firebirds bowlers Adam Milne (side) and Ben Sears (back) were also unavailable for selection as they continue to recover from or manage injuries.

The ODI series against Pakistan started in Karachi last night, while the ODI series against India starts on Wednesday January 18 in Hyderabad.

There were no major prizes, but solid efforts all round still from a small contingent of local bowlers who trekked north last week to take part in the Bowls New Zealand national singles and pairs.

Three local players qualified in the men’s singles event, but all dipped out at the same stage, ending their national glory hopes.

Alan Hill, Richard Kane and Nicholas Andrew gathered the required amount of wins through a tough qualifying stage to advance, but were all knocked out in the round of 128.

There was no title defence for Sandra Keith in the pairs after winning the title last year.

She and her playing partner, Bev Morel failed to make it through the qualifying stage of the tournament, which was set to be completed yesterday.

Both did qualify in the singles however last week, but a cruel twist of fate had them matched up against each other in the last 64 of the tournament. Morel got the better of her pairs partner to advance, but was also knocked out in the following round.

ther down the order than he’s used to lining up in the local and college versions of the game, where he traditionally opens.

Rising Mid Canterbury cricket star, Devon Flannery has made a strong start in his bid to help the Canterbury Under 19 men’s side to national glory.

The noted Ashburton College student was selected in the Canterbury side prior to Christmas for the national under 19 men’s tournament which began in Lincoln on the weekend, and while rain kept play at bay on day one on Saturday, the tournament officially began on Sunday.

Canterbury kicked off their title tilt with a 46-run victory over Otago in their competition opener, with Flannery doing his part with the bat.

He scored 20, batting at No.6 in the red-and-black line-up, a lot fur-

In the middle for 32 minutes, he helped push the middle order through after two quick wickets fell and their first-innings batting effort looked to be in jeopardy.

Flannery’s stay lasted 20 deliveries and featured one four as Canterbury worked through to 257/9 in their 50 overs.

Otago’s run chase started well as all of their top five batsmen made solid starts, but it crumbled late as they were eventually all out for 211, well short of their target.

Canterbury were back in action yesterday, taking on Auckland on Bert Sutcliffe Oval before a match on Wednesday against Central Districts. Thursday has them taking on Wellington and then Friday it’s Northern Districts.

Matches each day begin at 10am on either the Lincoln Green or Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

Canterbury kicked off their title tilt with a 46-run victory over Otago in their competition opener, with Flannery doing his part with the bat.
