SHOP smart SHOP loca Game on in Ashburton Virtual success from day one for five mates Maddison Gourlay Five friends are on a mission to change the perception of entertainment in Ashburton with their one-of-a-kind virtual reality arcade. The quintet, with a vision to bring something new to Ashburton, saw an opportunity to bring their passion for virtual reality gaming to the community. And in August it happened, with Virtual & Retro Arcade opening on Tancred Street. “You often hear, ‘there is nothing to do in Ashburton’. We decided to change that by creating Virtual & Retro,’’ director Andy McKee said. “Think of virtual and retro like the early internet cafes, a lot of people went there to get used to the technology in a controlled environment. We are just the same, just with virtual reality.” Virtual reality (VR) gaming is interactive computer-generated experiences in big roomscaled settings. It creates environments that could be similar to the real world or something completely foreign. Players could face their fear of heights by jumping off a building with no consequences, or stare into the bloodthirsty eyes of crazed zombies without panic. Customers hire virtual reality VR headsets or try their luck in car simulators or a flying simulator, and there are screens for non-participants to watch the action. And lots of people have

And getting the dad and his

boy playing together was the ultimate result, according to McKee. “It was perfect because we don’t want the parents to think it’s just for kids, we have a large variety of games and things for all ages to have a go with virtual reality,” McKee said. “We want to see everyone have a go.” The virtual and retro team, having taken a punt to open a

new business in trying times, were determined to be a permanent Ashburton entertainment fixture. Planning wise, they hoped their growth would continue so much that they could be forced to move to newer and bigger premises before their existing lease expired in 18 months. Not surprisingly, they were also 100 per cent behind the Ashburton Guardian’s shop local

Everything to do with treating yourself Maddison Gourlay

It just took a gentle push of encouragement from her husband for Emma Haskett to take the leap of owning a business. She is glad she listened as she is now looking back on five years as a successful business owner. Haskett owns Bellissimo Day Spa on Moore Street, which helps people feel good about themselves by offering a variety of treatments from “brow to toe”. “Everyone leaves (Bellissimo) feeling lovely and nice,” Haskett said. “We have everything to do with treating yourself and a solution to anything.” Seeing her business grow since she took over in 2017 has been a heartwarming thing to look back on, but Haskett will always remember the hard work she had to put in at the start. Haskett and her family moved to Ashburton when she was seven years old. In her teenage years she started her first job in fast food restaurant KFC. She said it taught her how to talk to customers and was also where she met her husband. She credits the time she spent working at KFC as a key reason she gained the confidence to start training to be a beauty therapist. Eventually she landed a job and down the line started a family and switched from practising to teaching beauty therapy. Haskett then decided, after her youngest child was born, that she wanted to go back to work. However, her husband

Locals jumping on booster train

Left – Phillip and Marilyn Coster still smiling even though they couldn’t get vaccinated early yesterday morning.

Lili Haydon An Ashburton couple had a greatgranddaughter on their minds when they lined up for their Covid booster jab. Phillip and Marilyn Coster are desperately hoping they’ll soon be able to see their precious new family member and other whanau in Australia when travel restrictions ease, having aimed to receive their third Covid-19 vaccination at the Life Pharmacy on East Street yesterday. “We have a great granddaughter we haven’t even met yet, she was born last March,” Marilyn Coster said after queuing for her booster jab. Both, with children living in Brisbane, were quick to get in line for their booster shots, being in a queue yesterday morning even before the pharmacy opened “Covid, it’s a bad thing and it’s not going anywhere soon,” he said. The Costers and about a dozen

others turned up at 8.30am yesterday but were told to come back after 10am. That was when the vaccinations were to be dropped off, allowing the Life Pharmacy team to resume offering the walk-in vaccination clinic.

Life Pharmacy co-owner Rachel Eaton was not surprised by the early-morning queues, having completed over 200 vaccinations by the end of the day last Wednesday when hundreds of Mid Cantabrians first became eli-

gible for their booster shots earlier than originally expected. That earlier timeframe was because of the national booster change policy. From January 5, those aged 18 and over were eligible for booster shots if there

was a four-month gap to when they received their second dose instead of a six month wait. Director-general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield has said the booster vacations will be vital in fighting against New Zealand’s response to omicron. That booster shot change has seen interest right across Mid Canterbury from locals keen to get in quick and not just through making a booking. Rakaia Medical Centre doctor Sue Fowlie said people who were opting to have a walk-in vaccination could do so, but must be patient. “We are encouraging people to get the vaccine. Covid-19 will be in the community, it’s the inevitable,” Fowlie said. Fowler also said this was a perfect time for people still uncertain about getting the vaccine. “Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have concerns about the vaccine.”

Methven Summer School runs at a loss Malcolm Hopwood A lack of vaccination passes affected attendance at Methven’s Summer School this year. Several tutors from outside the Ashburton district cancelled classes because they didn’t have vaccination passes while others had to fill in at work instead because colleagues weren’t vaccinated. Several students also cancelled because of vaccination issues. The Methven Summer School, which ran from January 5-9, only found out about cancellations in December but decided to go ahead with the courses and stu-

dents available. About 120 students attended as opposed to more than 200 in previous years. Methven Summer School president, Sandy Redmond, said this year’s school ran at a loss and the committee will evaluate the financial situation in a few days’ time. “We’ve built up a contingency fund over the years and this will meet the deficit,” she said. “While we can’t determine the future, we intend to find a way through so we can organise a more expansive school next year.” Redmond said the summer school has put Methven on the map for more than 35 years and she doesn’t want it to end. “At our next meeting we’ll start looking at courses for 2023 and engage tutors who are appropriately vaccinated,” Redmond said.

A passion for gemstones

NEWS 5

Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton’s Malcolm Luxton is going to be busy sorting through his gemstones. Luxton, the president of the Canterbury Mineral and Lapidary Club, has 4000 gemstones in his collection, but now he’s starting his preparation to decide which ones he will display in the National Gem Show in Christchurch later this year. “It’s the one opportunity for the top rock-hounds to either display their gems, crystals, fossils and minerals or compete nationally for trophies and certificates,” he said. The show is being organised by Luxton’s club and it’s a big deal, having not been held for the past two years. But Luxton is confident it’ll go ahead in 2022 and he’s expecting between 60 to 80 fossil and mineral collectors to attend the event at the Woolston Club from October 14-16. It should be an exciting time for Luxton, 74, who has a mini gemstone museum in Tinwald. He’s also a national authority on agates, which are especially found in Mid Canterbury, and six years ago he wrote the Agate Bible. He’s sold nearly 1000 copies and hopes the few remaining books will sell like hot stones early this year. He’s starting to research a sec-

Luxton’s specialty is agates, formed out of volcanic rock when volcanos erupted about 90 million years ago. “There are pockets of andesite volcanoes (a grey to black volcanic rock that is mostly silica) in the Mid Canterbury foothills and,

over centuries, agate stones tumbled down the rivers to the sea,” he said. “Our local region has some of the most unique agate in the world. The colours and minerals form unusual characteristics which make them distinctive.” Though Luxton has been collecting for more than 50 years, his focus now was on cutting and

polishing agate – the art of lapidary – for other enthusiasts. But he hasn’t entirely stopped collecting or exhibiting and is considering pieces of agate he’s picked up from a Mayfield farm for the Gem Show. “I would spend more than 20 hours a week on commissions. They send me rough stone to cut and polish,” he said.

Police are seeking help from the public following a burglary at Farmlands in Ashburton. The burglary happened on just before 1am on January 5 at Farmlands West Street premises. Police said that four offenders were involved, two of whom entered the building and took multiple items. One of the offenders, who was caught on security camera, was wearing a distinctive hoodie with an emblem on the front and back. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Police on 105 and quote file number 220105/0173. People can also contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Going swimmingly: surviving the floods A free-stall barn has helped a Mid Canterbury family re-angle its dairy business and sustain production through some of the worst flooding their region had been exposed to in more than 100 years. When the Stewart family first invested in their imposing 140 metre by 75m barn back in 2013, the subsequently falling milk price turned it into a bold move that raised some eyebrows. However, with some resilient thinking, this family – anchored by David and Maree Stewart – weathered the challenge. The barn has now become a central part of the family’s ability to harness premium winter milk contracts, as they move towards 70 per cent autumn-calving pattern on their 550-cow herd. It also helped them traverse the region’s flood disaster in late May, which has forever buried 14.5 hectares of their farm under riverbed rubble. This is the first season that David and Maree’s sons TJ and Mark, together with Mark’s wife Stacey, have taken over leasing the operation. Barwell Farm at Greenstreet is sandwiched between the north and south banks of the Ashburton River, making it one of the worst-af- Continued P7 fected areas.

Brothers Mark (left) and TJ Stewart flank Mark’s wife, Stacey, in the barn that has allowed them to remain on track with their production this season despite the crippling floods which forever buried 14.5 hectares of their Mid Canterbury farm under riverbed rubble last May.

Community flood support ‘critical’ The flood’s calling card also included deep layers of silt, trees and stones on another 20ha of the pastures around the dairy, which will take time to bring back into full production. In all, 50ha was impacted and 15km of fencing was wiped out. The late, cold spring compounded feed shortages for many, and ravaged other winter-milk production across the region. Yet, Barwell Farm’s production is up 3.3 per cent in the year to date, with the operation managing to stay within its pre-flood feed budget. Because they could use the barn, damaged pasture has had time to recover, meaning the pasture that needs more work hasn’t hurt production by being out of a grazing rotation. The autumn calvers that went through the flood are still on target to produce more than 650kg milk solids per cow in 280 days. Their winter contract was 600kg/MS per day. Stacey Stewart said production sat at 700kg/MS per day all winter. “I think this is the best the cows have looked this winter compared to previous years.” Barwell Farm didn’t lose any stock, but they were scrambling, and the milking herd spent 20 hours standing in the dairy yard without feed, water or milking after their owners were evacuated. David and Maree’s home was flood damaged leading to their evacuation, with photos of the family’s 10-year-old fox terrier, Max, making national news as he was loaded to leave. Before they were evacuated, the Stewarts rescued their dry cows – who were up to their hocks in water by the time the family reached them. They then walked the animals to Glenalla and Snowfed Farms, owned by the Gilbert family, which gave the Stewarts free grazing for 180 head. Ealing dairy farmer Duncan Barr, who has experience of working with government agencies as a result of the mycoplasma bovis

outbreak, visited and helped the family devise a plan. Federated Farmers’ flood recovery co-ordinator Angela Cushnie was also active in the conversations. The Stewarts, who will have to climb over some $150,000 to $200,000 in flood-damage costs, said community support was critical in the aftermath, and the continuing solidarity remains a high point in the horrifying experience. Assisting the family to sustain their business and production is MilkMaP’s senior farm business consultant Cameron Burton. Having helped balance cow nutrition with profitability for the last three years, Burton has now helped them work through postflood feed budgets, strategies to sustain production, submitting insurance claims, and righting the cows’ ship in general. His work has allowed the Stewarts to sustain cashflow.

TJ Stewart said they have been pushed and tested as they work to bring the pastures back into line, but the way the cows had coped had been incredible. With Synlait paying up to $13kg/MS (for winter milk) the Lead with Pride producers are relieved that they have kept their production on-track. The barn had been pulling its weight for several years, but really came into its own this season, he said. “The carryover and autumn-calving cows are usually in the barn from late April to early May for one feed a day and overnight. They are then in the barn 24/7 from late May to mid to late September. “By late October, we would usually shut it down until the next autumn calving – unless the season was dry in late summer. “What the barn does is give us options to sustain production and maintain cow comfort.

Above – An example of the devastation which is too final to ever be pulled back into production. Below – The autumn calvers that went through the flood.

“It’s been a great add-on to the farm, and we wouldn’t farm without it now.” Burton said refining the business has positioned the family to make the most of its natural advantages. “I think the big game-changers come down a few things: probably largely around how they have set up their business by including the winter milk and reducing feed costs and including a better diet formulation to increase per cow production”. It has added to the overall economics of the farm. The family has been able to easily complete their flood-insurance claims with Burton’s support. “I was able to model the impact of the loss of land and infrastructure, which quantified the additional feed we could expect to buy or claim,” Burton said. Stacey Stewart said the final wash-up has proven to them how much resilience they have, and they remain optimistic about the industry. “This year when we took over the farm was supposed to be ‘our year’. Then the floods came, and we instead started to think, ‘Maybe next year will be our year’. “But, no. Actually, we are now back to thinking this year can still be our year.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): After an interaction, you feel charged, drained or neutral. Whether you decide to keep moving forward with a person has a lot to do with which category you most consistently fall into after being around them. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The person who asks terrific questions and helps you along can also miss your point from time to time and/or be unavailable when you need them. It’s why you need people on your team. Keep adding. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Embrace your inner juvenile delinquent. And if you don’t think such a person exists, all the more reason to discover and celebrate that naive rebel who holds the key to your creative genius. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You are still discovering how to best project your talents. Right now, this is not about trying new things out. Rather, it’s a process of stripping away the excess to reveal the pure essence of what you do. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Crude resources and tools will force you to reckon with the soundness of an idea. The concept will have to be strong to shine through, when you have a wonderful idea, it doesn’t take much to convey it. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The important thing sticks. You may not know why it’s important, but the picture that lingers in your mind after the situation has long passed is there for a reason. All will be revealed in time. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): While it is pleasant to spend time with that cheerful and even-tempered someone, you must admit the troublemaker in your life has a role. To interact with both people in the same day is heavenly! SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): There’s a danger of getting too stuffy in your approach. What if you were to take things in a casual, whimsical and anti-intellectual direction? Weirdly, the scene can be elevated by the seemingly low brow. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You’re not always in an environment conducive to influence, so don’t expect yourself to just know what’s current. Observation and research will freshen your view... get you thinking ahead of the curve. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Relationships aren’t always about the sort of connections that can be fallen into. Often these bonds must be created. Though instinct helps, right now it’s a downright intellectual enterprise. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Today holds all the fluid fun and challenge of a line drawing where you’re not allowed to take your pen off the paper for the entirety of the sketch. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There are so many worlds inside this world that it would be impossible to reflect on rules that apply to all. You’ve a gift for visiting other worlds with openness and yet sticking to your own rules.

Don’t despair, this story’s a hoot

I

t’s that special time of the year, a time when we publish heart-warming, humaninterest stories designed to make you feel better after running up a holiday and Christmas-induced level of debut normally associated with Mexico. I have such a story, which was sent to me many years ago by a friend in London. It’s a story which at the time convinced me to never again whistle to the singing birds in the splendid native bush, which surrounded my former castle in Otatara, near Invercargill. The story, which I am not making up, concerns a man named Neil, from Devon, England, and how he discovered an owl nesting in his garden. Each night, Neil would go out-

Daryl Holden side and hoot to the owl. To his delight, he would hear a hoot in reply, then he would hoot some more. This went on night after night, month after month. Neil even kept a log of his conversations, if you like, with the owl. Then one day Neil’s wife got to talking about this with a neighbour, who said her husband, whose name was Fred, had also been going out every night to hoot to the owl. At this point the proverbial penny dropped. The women real-

ised their husbands had spent an entire year hooting to each other. The owl was not involved at all. The owl was probably inviting his owl friends over to drink owl beer and listen to those hooting twits and laugh and laugh and laugh until they fell off their branches. Okay, so I must admit that this heart-warning story is not really a serious opinion piece that you would expect to find here, but doesn’t it make you feel better about yourself? At least you could say to yourself: “Okay, maybe it will take me years to pay off that holiday, or that flash new phone, or that super-duper train set I bought little Tommy, but at least I won’t be spending my evenings in a cold, damp English garden exchanging owl hoots with a man named

Fred.’’

On a serious note thing… Bluff has never seen anything like it. Not long before midnight on Friday, and on an unusually calm night, about 40 vehicles were parked up, their lights on full and focused on the Stirling Point signpost so that Emma Timmis could see her way through the darkness to the finish line of a remarkable feat. And then, at 11.18pm, she did it, setting a Guinness World Record for running the 2100km length of New Zealand in just 21 days. The Kaiapoi artist had somehow broken through the pain barrier day after day to set a record for running from Cape Reinga

to Bluff in 20 days, 17 hours and 17 minutes – the previous record of 35 days having been well and truly obliterated. A superhuman effort by a woman with an endurance running pedigree but whose performance this time wasn’t just about setting records. Her goal, to raise money and greater awareness for mental health in New Zealand and England, where she is from, was the driving force in an effort that really was out of this world. An effort that, of course, included running through Ashburton. Timmis and partner will be back through Ashburton this week but this time in a campervan. Much more sensible, I’m sure you’d agree.

Holiday flies by Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR

A

s we were packing up our caravan at Rangi on Thursday morning last week, the comment was made about how quickly these Christmas holidays had passed us by. Twelve nights had absolutely flown by. I think the main reason was an investment the father-in-law made a few months ago. A couple of us enjoy fishing in the sea, but were getting frustrated with how hard it had become to catch a nice elephant fish, sentiment shared by those who chase salmon and trout at the mouth, I’m sure. Robin forked out some of his hard earned and purchased a Contiki on Trade Me for the family to have some fun with. That’s exactly what it has provided, up with Family Fun. I wouldn’t say we are a well-oiled machine as yet, but we are learning every time we launch the thing. We all have our wee jobs to do, and most of the time things go pretty much to plan. Although we did get the Contiki snagged one afternoon, which took two hours to retrieve. So far, we’ve had a pretty good strike rate with the Contiki, including one run where we had four very nice elephant fish on the hooks.

By the time you do a couple of runs it burns up two to three hours, then add on some filleting time plus some beer-batter preparation, cooking and eating, and you’ve chewed through a fair chunk of time each day. And of course, like any good fishing story, there is always time spent with a cold one discussing the catch and how we can do things better next time. My job is Fish Removal. I get the fish off the hooks. Put them out of their misery and gut them, unless they are too small or dogfish, which are unhooked and re-united with the sea. The latter earned me the nickname ‘Steve’ for my ability to get stabbed in the hand from the nasty wee spike the doggies have on their back. They really are the squirmy wee buggars of the sea. My other job is Cook. This is a much less painful role, unless some of the hot oil splatters and you’ve got your stubbies on. This year I made one adjustment to my cooking routine, and it was an absolute winner. After the fish fillets have been chilled, I dusted them in flour before dunking in the beer batter and cooking. It helps even a light and runny batter stick to the fish. Right, I’m out of here before this turns into a cooking column. Hoo Roo Phill “Crikey” Hooper

Mid Canterbury’s horse and dog racing action

Camino Rocoso claims Nuggets

Laking produces masterly winning ride Enigmatic performer Camino Rocoso shrugged off a narrow defeat in the Greymouth Cup early last week to turn the tables on his conqueror that day in Bully Boy, as he took out the coveted Kumara Gold Nuggets on Saturday. The John & Karen Parsons-trained son of Shocking, who started his career in the stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, had been painfully out of form during his spring and early summer campaign but looked to have turned a corner when he charged home at Greymouth to be beaten by just half a head. Given an economical run in midfield this time by rider Jason Laking, Camino Rocoso hugged the rail throughout before angling into the clear approaching the home turn. Laking set out after Bully Boy, who had taken the lead at that point, before Camino Rocoso surged to the front at the 150m, racing clear for a three and a half-length victory over Bully Boy with Mama Sans battling on gamely for third. Karen Parsons, who has been battling a bout of ill health lately, watched on with her husband John from their Balcairn living room, with the pair cheering enthusiastically throughout the contest. “That is just such a thrill for us both,” she said. “We were up early to get all the horses worked and get the team ready to travel today. “Our foreman Jason Barber and his partner Jess, along with our float driver Gary Mitchell, have been taking the horses back and forward and they were away early to make what is a pretty long trip. “John and I thought he could go well

today as he had been very unlucky last time. “I started yelling and John told me to pipe down and then he couldn’t help himself, so he started yelling as well, so there was plenty of noise coming from the lounge. “To get that win is just amazing and a great tonic for both of us. “The phone has run red hot with congratulations since the race finished which is very special for us both.” Parsons was quick to pay tribute to the ride of Jason Laking who had been aboard the horse for the first time at Greymouth.

“Jason Laking rode him outstandingly well,” she said. “He has two rides now and he has been superb both times. “The horse has his quirks, but when he is on his game, he is very hard to beat. “He seems to go his best races at this time of the year, and two years ago he won the Trentham Stakes in January. “That’s where we are aiming him again, as long as we can get the transport sorted out.” The victory made it thirteen wins from 65 starts for Camino Rocoso and took his career prizemoney past the $350,000 mark.

Swift Guy leads local contingent at local meeting Matt Markham The locals may have the most to say when racing returns to Mid Canterbury for the new year today. A nine-race card at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting this afternoon is the first meeting in the region for 2022, and there’s a plethora of local hopes who will be out to try and claim success on one of their local tracks. And the best of them comes early in the day. Astute horseman, Kerry O’Reilly and his brother Leo will combine in the third race on the card with the promising maiden pacer, Swift Guy. Twice second in three starts to the races, the robust pacer looks primed to end his time in the maiden ranks today as he switches to the all weather surface after racing on the grass for all of his career to date. That won’t be a problem, however, with the son of Gold Ace, who is raced by Kerry and longtime stable owner Vic Lamb, having done all his workout and trials on the Ashburton surface. A bold second behind the talented Onedin Miki at his last start, Swift Guy is likely to start a dominant favourite in what is a very even looking maiden field. Also primed and seemingly ready to put the hoof in the till at the moment is the Raewyn Low-trained Missmollygoodgolly. The consistent pacer has been excellent in all five starts back this campaign from a spell, never finishing furth back than fourth, with two third and a second alongside two fourths. Drawn well this afternoon, driver Lawrence McCormick will be out to use the gelding’s noted stand start speed to land in a forward position from which to attack when the race gets serious. Race eight on the card today will see a strong contingent of local trotters engaged, including the talented Samantha’s Moon who resumes for Brent White, alongside Navara for the Ford family, Rogie Falls, who is also trained by White, and last start winner, DD’s Super Stuart for Carl Markham.

TAKING ISSUE 21

Ashburton Guardian Tuesday, January 11, 2022

Tough start to the new year for local sides Matt Markham The New Year’s hangover worked against Mid Canterbury’s two senior cricket sides on the weekend, as the South Canterbury senior competition kicked back into gear for the second half of the season. And now the pressure is firmly on both Allenton and the Tech Stags to get some momentum back quickly, or risk being left behind by other teams in the competition. Both were soundly beaten on the weekend, after their rivals put together imposing targets to try and run down with the bat, and while Tech got within a sniff of theirs, Allenton were never a chance as they crumbled for under 100. But there was a highlight for the Indian side though – a hat-trick to Kulvinder Kirk on the last three balls of the innings offered reason for a small smile as they walked off the middle at the end of the Celtic innings. It was small smiles only though, as their rivals had amassed an impressive 354 for nine from their 50 overs in the middle and Allenton were forced to watch on as they top order effectively batted them out of the match. A 168 run second-wicket partnership was followed by a 99 run third-wicket effort, and after 43 overs Celtic were 302-3 and in with a chance of getting close to 400. Kirk put a stop to that though, as he ripped through the Celtic lower order on his way to 5-66 from his eight overs. In reply, Allenton never looked comfortable with the bat. A 31-run stand that lasted eight overs at the top of the innings was the highlight as wickets fell at a frequent rate, and the Allenton side were eventually rolled for 97 in the 26th over. Sanjay Undre top scored with 28, but only

Short scoreboards Temuka 229/8 – (Alex Hooper 3-24, Alex Keenan 3-40) Tech Stags 178 (Alex Hooper 53 no, Jason Morrison 38, Ryan Bell 36) Celtic 354-9 (Kulvinder Kirk 5-66) Allenton 97 (Sanjay Undre 28)

There wasn’t a whole lot to smile about for the Tech Stags on the weekend as they went down to Temuka in South Canterbury Senior Cricket PHOTO ADAM BURNS 280121-AB three other batsmen managed to make it into double figures. Meanwhile, a little further up the road in Temuka, the Tech Stags also had a battle on their hands. And it was one they were unable to come out on top of. Bowling first against a side who hadn’t troubled them through the first half of the season, the Stags did a handy job with the ball restricting their hosts to 229/8 from their 50 overs. It was the Alex show, with Alex Hooper and Alex Keenan both grabbing three wickets each. The score would have looked achievable for the second-placed Stags, and even more so after a couple of handy partnerships at the top of the order had them in good stead. However, despite a number of starts, the Temuka bowlers put the squeeze on, and

Tech were never able to eat into the target, and their last four wickets fell for 14 runs as they were all out in the 45th over, 51 runs short of their target. Hooper backed up his effort with the ball scoring 53 not out with the bat, but outside of a 38 from Jason Morrison and 36 from Ryan Bell, there was little resistance from the remainder of line up. The result sees Celtic join Tech in second on the same amount of points, with just three rounds to play. Tech have a tough run home with Star this week, but then Pleasant Point and Celtic in the final round – the match which could determine the final standings. Allenton are in a race of their own for the final playoff spot. Tied with Star on the standings they play Temuka this week, then Star and finish the round robin with a match against the table-topping Pleasant Point.

Rodney Greaney kept the smiles flowing at the Allenton Bowling Club late into last week as he went deep into the knockout stages of the New Zealand Men’s Pairs at the Bowls New Zealand Championships in Christchurch. Greaney, who is a clubmate of Sandra Keith, who claimed national glory earlier in the week when winning the women’s pairs with Bev Morel, made it down to the last eight in a hotly contest men’s pairs competition. Playing alongside Paul Matheson from Christchurch, Greaney was eventually eliminated in the quarter final by Andrew Kelly and Seamus Curtin, who went onto win the event, beating Gary Lawson and Tony Grantham in the final. Greaney was joined in the knockout stage of the pairs by fellow locals Craig Carter and Rob Fensom and also John Drayton and Neil Atkinson. Both of those pairings received a bye through to the round of 64 but were knocked out of the competition in that round. After het pairs win earlier in the week, Keith was out to repeat the effort in the singles. Qualifying the hard way with success on the second day of qualifying, she tumbled out of the tournament in the last 64.
