Electrifying the industry Doing the hard yards pays off for young family Maddison Gourlay The Husband family knows all about hard work. Andrew and Theresa Husband, the co-owners of Aotea Electric Ashburton, remember quite clearly some of the challenges they overcame when first starting out in the electrical trade 11 years ago. That’s when they started Direct

Electrical out of their Kermode Street home, with children Holly, now 14, and Riley, 11, in tow. “Back when it was just the two of us, Andy would be working all day on the tools and then we would put the kids to bed about 7 at night and we would be in the office until about midnight doing the paperwork,” Theresa said. “We did five years as Direct Electrical and then Aotea (Electric) asked if we wanted to go under their umbrella and we said yes. “It was a great opportunity to join them and become part of

their nationwide group. We have been doing that for six years now and it has been awesome.” Their Ashburton branch is one of 25 Aotea Electric businesses in New Zealand and the Husbands love being part of the national set-up because it meant they could talk to other people in the industry. Annually, directors of each Aotea Electric branch come together and bounce ideas off each other, as well as offer support. The business had also expanded for the Husbands since being part of the Aotea company. They’ve got eight staff and the

couple have just moved premises to Grahams Road where the business would sit behind their new house, but on the same land. Outside of all things electrical, the Husbands are heavily involved in sports. They support their teenage children in their sports, but also give back to the community by helping provide teams with hoodies and offering sponsorship opportunities. Their community support continued during the most recent lockdown last May, the Husbands donating coffee vouchers for the Guardian to distribute as

part of its Covid Champions series to acknowledge people doing great things for the community in trying times And that synergy was perfect for Aotea Electric Ashburton, which has always been about the community. That was just one reason why they support the Ashburton Guardian’s shop local community boosting campaign because without the support of locals, business wouldn’t be the same. “We love the Ashburton community,” Theresa said. “Especially in this climate, supporting local is important.”

Martins’ staff are busy bees Malcolm Hopwood

Reagan Martin has 30 million staff members. He’s probably one of the biggest employers locally and his team works from 500 locations established on farms around Mid Canterbury. They’re called hives and from there millions of bees gather the pollen or nectar from flowers which, in turn, is converted into honey by indoor bees in the hive. The bees are living examples of Shop Smart, Shop Local as they’re dedicated to producing the best honeydew, rata and clover honey in the district from local produce. Martin’s business, The Little Honey Company, was established in July and sells its honey from The Hive in King Street to Ashburton customers. But Martin’s empire does more than that. On Tuesdays and Fridays, they produce icecreams made from real fruit, topped with honey and bee pollen. They’ve been operating their King Street outlet for a fortnight now and are already receiving a steady stream of customers. Reagan runs the business with wife, Sarah, who said the honey is a sweetener which freezes on the icecream, becomes like hard caramel and produces a distinctive taste. Martin knew that, when he started his business in the middle of a global pandemic, he had to be enterprising. It’s been a slow season so far and needs good weather for the bees to gather the pollen from the hives. “Beekeeping is massively weather dependent,” he said. So, as an outlet, he’s selling the icecreams topped with honey and also offering beekeeping experiences for both adults and children. During these experiences, people come to one of their working apiary sites, dress in a bee suit and get close up and personal

They also offer two beekeeping programmes in primary schools. The first includes a bee talk, where the Martins take a working hive to the school and teach students about bees and the importance they play in the ecosystem. The second involves leaving the hives in the school grounds

for the season and, with their supervision, selecting students to look after them and learning all the basics of beekeeping. “They get to produce honey from scratch and then market it

and sell it from the school as a fundraiser,” Sarah said. Reagan has been a beekeeper for 10 years, the last six years working for Midlands in Ashburton.

“We always wanted to establish ourselves and our own brand of honey. “We are an important part of the Mid Canterbury food chain,” he said.

Retro rock revival ready Malcolm Hopwood

“It’s crazy but it works.” Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School director, Jo Castelow, faces the challenge of moulding 100 distinctive voices into a tight vocal ensemble by the end of this week. The students, from throughout Canterbury, came together on Monday, and by tomorrow they’ll be rehearsed and ready to deliver their first performance in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. “The expectation is high among the students. They were sent the music last month and they arrived on Monday ready to sing,” Castelow said. “However, it’s very challenging, and when they confront a U2 number they have to focus and concentrate. I aim for a high quality production each year. This year’s theme is Retro, Rock and Revival, with music ranging from Woodstock to U2 plus selections from The Peanuts movie, Disney villains, a Green Day montage and 1980s music. Many of the students, aged between 9 and 22, have been returning for years, with a number using the opportunity to advance themselves at a local level or in professional theatre. This year Castelow is assisted by Megan Wilson, a former Mount Hutt College and Nasda graduate. House fire Christchurch driver Multiple fire crews attended a rural property on Ashburton Staveley Road on Tuesday night. The fire was reported at around 6.30pm. Methven and Alford Forest volunteer fire brigades arrived to find the 900 square metre home on Ashburton Staveley Road “totally involved”, Fenz spokesperson Simon Lyford said In total two appliances from Methven, an appliance from Alford Forest, and a tanker from Methven attended the scene. Lyford said that everyone was out of the house by the time the crews showed up, and the fire was extinguished before crews left the scene by 9.27pm after they were satisfied with the cooling down of any hotspots. The fire was not being treated as suspicious, he said.

jailed over crash death of Ashburton sisters

Ashburton Guardian and NZ Herald The father of two teenage Ashburton girls killed in a fiery crash on Christchurch’s Port Hills says he would have forgiven the driver if it was an accident – but it was “an act of pure stupidity”. Levi Phillip Fiddymont, 21, was sentenced to two years and four months’ imprisonment by the Christchurch District Court yesterday on two charges of dangerous driving causing the deaths of teenage sisters Tayla and Sunmara Alexander. He was also sentenced on one count of dangerous driving causing injury to a third passenger in the car and driving without an appropriate licence the night of the crash on November 27, 2019. Tayla and Sunmara’s father, Jason Alexander, said in his victim impact statement that his daughters were “special young women”, who loved life. He said Tayla, 17, who died at the scene and was a “kindred spirit” with a heart of gold, always put others before herself. He said Sunmara was “a fun-loving kid” with a strong will and strong mind, who loved her friends and family. Sunmara spent more than two weeks in the critical care unit of Middlemore Hospital where she underwent several skin grafts and battled an infection before succumbing to her injuries on the day of her 16th birthday. Alexander also spoke of the trauma of losing his daughters, which left him una-

Jason Alexander. ble to work for a year. “I could and would forgive you if this was just an accident. “But this was not an accident, it was an act of pure stupidity,” he told Fiddymont. A close family friend’s victim impact statement, which was read by Crown prosecutor Sophia Bicknell, said Fiddymont’s denial of responsibility and decision to go to trial before changing his mind halfway through, caused unnecessary pain and trauma for the girls’ loved ones. “That alone shows me there is no re-

morse, no respect for Jason, Lisa and their family.” Fiddymont’s lawyer, Andrew McCormick, said his client had wanted to apologise to the victims’ family, but was advised by family and friends to be careful of what he said while police were investigating. After he was charged, bail conditions prevented him from contacting the victims’ family. Fiddymont, who was 19 at the time of the crash, was charged several months after it happened.

Major Mill Creek clean-up under way Contractors ACL have begun a major clean-up of the banks and stream bed of Mill Creek, from Argyle Park to Braebrook.

Thursday, 13 January 2022 | ISSUE 61

HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES Summer Youth Reading Challenges, Ashburton Library Choose a reading activity, complete it and earn points to go into a draw to win.

The work is expected to take until the end of March to complete. Starting from the Farm Road end of Argyle Park on 5 January, ACL staff have been using weedeaters, big forks and rakes to remove unwanted grass and weeds from the bank and in the creek.

On until 21 January

School Holiday Programme,

EA Networks Centre

Council Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann said the clean-up crew was making its way along the length of the creek as part of the operation. Weeds pulled from the creek were left to dry on the bank before being picked up to dispose of.

Activities include swimming, basketball, day trips, giant inflatables, and arts & craft! Book online at eanetworkscentre.co.nz

“The crew have reported plenty of positive comments from Argyle Park users about how good the creek is looking and it appears that a number of canines are happier padding in the cleared areas of the creek.”

The Great Santa Hunt,

Water in Mill Creek is mostly stockwater, though the creek also conveys stormwater as needed.

On until 13 February

The clean-up crew say they have seen a lot of cockabullies and some small fish. Watercress is also in the creek, though it has flowered and is past its best for picking. Mr McCann said regular maintenance will keep the creek in good condition. “The creek is also an important feature of Argyle Park, which is really popular with ratepayers, whether they are walking, biking, running or exercising the dog.” Mill Creek underwent major stabilisation

and enhancement works between 2009 and 2017, when retaining walls and rock banks were created along its length through Ashburton town. The banks were also planted. The waterway has had a long history in the Ashburton township and surrounds, and served several functions (as a water source for use at a flour mill and stockwater race).

The creek has been managed for flood control and drainage since the late 1970s.

There were issues with flood and erosion of the banks before the stabilisation and enhancement work, which was designed to contain a 50-year flood. The creek remains a part of the rural stockwater and urban stormwater network. Summertime Trail activity

Business rolls on, budgets up first A new year begins, with hopes that 2022 will be better than the last and that covid’s sticky tentacles are loosening up and the recovery from last winter’s floods continues.

Thompsons Track and Ashburton Staveley Road has been completed, with sections of Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road, Valetta Westerfield Road, Forks Road and Christys Road and another section of Ashburton Staveley Road planned over the next four months.

For Council, it is another busy year ahead and we are halfway through the 2021-22 financial year. Some projects have been ticked off already, like the upgrade of the CBD streetscape, and others are nearing completion, like the Ashburton Relief Sewer.

We are also almost finished unplanned emergency repairs that resulted from the big rain event at the end of last May. It’s been a big achievement to effect the repairs on top of the ongoing routine work necessary on the network.

It is also the busiest time of the year for our roading team and contractors, as they finish repairs and undertake resealing work only possible in the warmer months. Council spends about $3 million a year resealing roads and another $2 million on rehabilitation work in a normal year.

Financial decisions around other projects were confirmed in the Long Term Plan adopted last year and they include spending on water management, like upgrades for Methven’s drinking water treatment system, and money to progress the last stage of the business case for the second bridge.

Rehabilitation work on parts of 1

Thursday, 13 January 2022 | ISSUE 61

We will soon be consulting the community on its views for a 30-year development plan at Lakes Camp and Clearwater and also reviewing other policies and strategies, like the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan. Later in the year, there will also be the three-yearly local body elections. One of the first jobs for Council this year is a two-day budget workshop. The Long Term Plan shows a rate increase of 7.8 per cent for the next financial year but with inflation rising higher than forecast when the Long Term Plan was finalised, there will be a discussion about whether the forecast rate rise is realistic, given the current economic environment. Inflation has been rising since 30 June 2020 and the annual inflation rate (the difference between the September 2020 quarter and the September 2021

quarter) was 4.9 per cent. The Reserve Bank is predicting further increases, driven by a worldwide supply chain breakdown resulting in shortages of goods that is pushing prices up. At the budget workshop, Councillors will be discussing operational and capital spending for the new financial year – it is a critical piece of work that defines the detail of Council activity for the 12 months to 30 June 2023. We are all set for another busy and productive year and we look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. ashburtondc.govt.nz

Tinwald pool open longer, water's great! Tinwald pool is opening at 8am to accommodate lane swimmers while the EA Networks Centre’s main pools are shut for scheduled maintenance.

The pools are operated by the Ashburton District Council and Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said the Tinwald pool was opening earlier at 8am so lane swimmers could continue to enjoy their fitness time in the water. “Then we will have our swim school and swim squad sessions, and in the afternoon members of the public can enjoy their time. PROPOSED ROAD CLOSURE

Ashburton District Council gives public notice of a proposal to temporarily close roads to ordinary vehicle traffic to enable the holding of a community event –

The Tinwald outdoor pool will be open for lane swimmers from 8am until 9.30am, daily. Swim school holiday programme swimmers and squad swimmers will use the pool from 9.30am to 12.30pm and then it will be open to the public until 8pm. The main pools at the EA Networks Centre closed on Monday for three weeks so tiles can be replaced in the swimming and changing areas, and for other important maintenance work.

These past hot days have resulted in lots of people heading over for a swim, which is great.” A My Vaccine Pass is not needed at the Tinwald pool. The Tinwald facility has two pools – one 25 metres long and 1.2 metres deep, and a smaller shallower pool about 13 metres

long for smaller children to play in. A wall in the middle divides the two pools. While the pools are shut at the EA Networks Centre, the gymnasium and stadium remain open for use. “We have to drain the main pool to repair and replace broken tiles, and we will be replacing the tiled flooring in the men’s and disabled changing rooms. There is also important maintenance to do on the pumps and filters that handle water in all the centre’s pools.”

The pour will involve 13 concrete trucks, moving to and from the site between 4am and 9am.

The vehicles will enter the construction site by the Baring Square gate on Havelock Street and exit via the Methodist Church site onto Cameron Street. The main contractor, Naylor Love Canterbury, says traffic is not expected to be affected, with any waiting trucks parking within the site or well away from the immediate CBD area.

This proposed closure is made under the Local Government Act 1974 – Schedule 10 (11 (e) and will be considered at the next Council meeting on 16 February 2022.

Any person objecting to the proposal should lodge notice of their objection and grounds for their objection in writing by post or email to the Council, 5 Baring Square West, Ashburton by 4.00 pm, Friday 28 January 2022.

NZ’s hottest year on record Niwa report highlights wild 2021 weather Jonathan Leask Niwa has confirmed 2021 was the warmest year on record and Ashburton registered the highest temperature. Niwa released its annual report of weather and climate activity across the country which showed last year was the warmest year since records began back in 1908, with the previous hottest year being 2016. The nationwide average temperature was 13.6°C, almost 1°C

above the annual average set between 1981 and 2010. The hottest spell of the year took hold over New Zealand from January 25-28, with several locations observing record or near-record temperatures but the highest temperature of 2021 was recorded on January 26 at Ashburton hitting 39.4°C – New Zealand’s second hottest January temperature on record. Niwa climate scientist Nava Fedaeff said the winter of 2021 was also the warmest one on record, beating the previous record set in 2020. “2016 recorded an average temperature of 13.45°C or 0.84°C above average which was New Zealand’s warmest year on record

at the time,” Fedaeff said. “However, in 2021 we finished with an average temperature of 13.56°C which was 0.95°C above average and became New Zealand’s new warmest year on record.” During 2021 there were no months that experienced below average temperatures. Seven of the past nine years have been amongst New Zealand’s warmest on record a trend Fedaeff said was consistent with global warming patterns. Ashburton’s annual rainfall was recorded at 801mm and there were 21,997 sunshine hours. The report also touched on the May rainfall event, which had Winchmore record 77mm of rain

on May 29 establishing a new record for its highest one-day rainfall total in May. However, the next day the record was superseded as Winchmore recorded 78mm of rain on May 30. Winchmore also records its lowest ever February temperature of 1.6°C on February 17. Ashburton was one of several locations nationwide that record a record low of 19.5°C on April 5. Five locations had their highest ever daily rainfall in the month of May with Rakaia 108mm, Mt Somers 163mm, Lyndhurst 93mm, Winchmore 78mm, and Coldstream 80mm. Mt Somers then had another record for June, receiving a fur-

ther 110mm on June 1. Following the storm at the end of May Mount Hutt Ski Area reported snow depths of four metres at the summit (2080 metres above sea level), tapering to 3040cm at the base area (1610m), and to just 5cm at the bottom of their triple chair (1440). On September 10, the first in a series of strong cold fronts hit the South Island causing widespread gusts over 100kph, including 150kph gust at Upper Rakaia, and 113km at Methven. Then days later on September 13, another powerful cold front hit the South Island, causing gusts over 138kph at Upper Rakaia West, 116kph at Winchmore, and 104kph at Methven.

Bank warns to watch out for local scammers Malcolm Hopwood Local scammers offering goods and services are active in Mid Canterbury. Senior partner at BNZ in Ashburton, Karen Burrowes, has received calls from clients who’ve paid for goods on Marketplace but then find the local addresses to pick up their purchases don’t exist. While she’s only received two or three calls, she believes a lot more people will have been caught by the scam but have stayed quiet

about it. “We advise people to do their checking first and not pay for goods upfront before receiving them,” she said. “It concerns me that it’s happening locally.” Burrowes said scammers don’t take a break over Christmas and the holiday period, in fact it’s their busiest time, she said. “People making more online purchases over Christmas and the New Year are targeted by scammers,” she said. “They use a range of tactics to secure money.” While there are the usual scams where people are rung, fraudulently from Spark, and told there’s something wrong with their computer or courier companies are holding parcels which will be

delivered when payment is made, Burrowes is aware of a new SMS phishing campaign in recent days. She said the format informs people “a payment was attempted from a new device today at 12.11, 06Jan22 (or a variety of times). If this was not you, urgently visit a website and follow the security prompts”. The people that do are asked to give personal details which the fraudsters then use to access credit cards or bank accounts. “Locally, I’ve received daily calls from customers telling me about this new scam,” she said. “It’s happening because people have purchased or received new cellphones, computers, tablets or I-pads as gifts and are getting

used to them, so they are easy targets.” She said if people receive scams, ignore them, block them or alert their local bank. “We can reassure them and check it out to see if it’s legitimate.” Nationally, Burrowes said millions of dollars were fraudulently taken last year and scams will continue into 2022. “Make sure you have a strong password that can’t be accessed and change it frequently and have a lock on your device so noone can use it,” she said. “Neither should you save your password or credit card details on your device. “If it’s too good to be true, it’s too good to be true.”

OUR VIEW

Hagley Oval NZ’s secret weapon

I

t was a perfect test cricket return – runs, milestones, wickets, a great atmosphere and a touch of emotion. But I’m not just talking about the Black Caps, especially captain Tom Latham and his majestic 252 that set up such a dominant second test win against Bangladesh in Christchurch. I’m also referring to my personal Hagley experience on Monday, day two of a test that was over inside three days. It was my spectator debut at the Hagley Oval ground, which became New Zealand’s eighth test cricket venue in 2014. It was also my return to international cricket full stop in the garden city. I used to report on cricket in all forms and at all levels for

Daryl Holden many years, but for the life of me I simply can’t remember the last time I covered international play in Christchurch. I guess it’s no surprise that my memory has failed me. After all, even on the best of days it can be as useless as windscreen wipers on a submarine. But Monday was special, a last-minute decision to shoot up the road with the boy to enjoy what loomed as a historic day for New Zealand being just too

good to resist. And it was worth it. Devon Conway continued to emphasise his class by bringing up his third test century, Latham did his thing in such style, Ross Taylor walked out to a touching guard of honour – and then back off not long after – as a New Zealand test cricket batsman for the final time in a fabulous career. And then, in the final over of the second day, Trent Boult became just the fourth New Zealander to reach 300 test wickets when he grabbed a five-wicket haul to help roll the Tigers for 126 in reply to New Zealand’s 521-6 declared. What a day. What an occasion. And Hagley Oval lived up to its reputation as being a spectator-friendly boutique venue,

perfect for viewing on the grassy banks. The food and drink options were generally pretty good and the Hadlee pavilion looked stylish but not out of place. But it’s a venue that’s not just top-notch for fans and families because it also quite clearly suits the Black Caps, with the heavily grassed pitch and fast playing conditions so conducive to our bowling attack. The Black Caps must certainly see the ground as something of a safe haven, being able to point to an impressive record of seven wins from nine tests, with one draw. And that got me wondering why New Zealand Cricket doesn’t get a little more hard-nosed about that obvious backyard ad-

vantage by always starting home test series at Hagley Oval. Doing so would surely give us our best chance of starting a home test series well and then moving on to perhaps the second test at the Bay Oval at Mt Maunganui. For years, Australia has scheduled its home test series with that very approach in mind by using the pacey, bouncy pitch conditions at the Gabba in Brisbane – conditions so foreign to all touring teams – to give their side the best chance of a winning start to the summer, and it nearly always works. It could also work in New Zealand, where Hagley Oval is without doubt a priceless little venue, but it could also be more of a weapon than we realise.

There’s nothing like the arrival of a new year to make us decide on what the next chapter in our book of life is going to be. Sahera Laing has been trying out a few new chapters, not all of them a raging success, but she’s out there giving it a go.

A comedy spiced with adventure Sahera Laing LIFE COACH

W

ell, the past two years have been a bit of flop. Normal life is a thing of the past and the future is turning into a science fiction thriller. And as much as I enjoy a good thriller, I think, perhaps, in this case we need to draft a different story. I’m certainly up for a bit of a comedy, a drop of adventure and

a few plot twists. Let’s set the scene: Setting aside the dreams of international travel, I turn to my backyard. Canterbury. Isn’t this place beautiful? We get to be by the sea, with fresh air, clean water and the hills. We are in such a lovely part of the country and it’s not overcrowded. As for the comedy and adventure – I’m beginning to grow my own food. I’m seriously not a gardener. Plants often kill themselves when they see me coming, it’s far less painful! I’ve tried setting

up a vege patch which is now full of herbs (and weeds – how does one get rid of clover?). I’m growing tomatoes in buckets; silverbeet in boxes. It’s frustratingly hysterical how illequipped I am with nature. I’m not going to the gym. So … I’m looking a little rounder. I’m not getting caught up in the change of texture, just rolling with it (pun intended). I fixed up my daughter’s bike and might just get on it this coming week. I haven’t been biking in 20 odd years. I think I’ll sneak out at the

crack of dawn and hopefully avoid spectators until I learn to ride again. I think I’ll feel safer on a tricycle (red, with tassels and a bell please). I’m learning to surf! Well, I’m not confident enough to call what I do surfing yet, but with all the plot twists, I am the queen of wipe-outs and I won’t need to season my food until 2025. (I am sure there is a column or two based on my surfing experiences to date). I guess I am working to rewrite the sci-fi thriller into something more charming and enjoyable for myself.

I don’t see it as new year resolutions, I see it as my next evolution, the next chapter in my book of life, where I get to change the plot. What’s your next chapter going to be? Good golly, Miss Molly dashes past them at Ashburton Matt Markham There were few more fitting or deserving winners at Ashburton on Tuesday than Missmollygoodgolly. After a string of excellent efforts since resuming from a spell late in 2021, the Raewyn Low-trained mare broke through for success on Tuesday – grabbing the second win of her career. The six-year-old mare is starting to fashion a tidy record on the track, with her two wins complemented by 10 minor placings from just 27 career starts. And the fun is a long way from over yet. Driven confidently early by regular pilot, Lawrence McCormick, Missmollygoodgolly found the front before yielding to take a trail. That became three-back on the fence at the winning post with a lap left to run, and McCormick admitted to being a little concerned for a moment as they rounded the final bend. “We didn’t have a lot of clear air to work with, but she was travelling so good,” he said.

“But when I looked across and saw everything outside me was off the bit, I knew we just needed that little bit of luck, and we would be right.” That luck came, and when the gap opened up Missmollygoodgolly did the rest – bursting through before holding off the late challenge of Somedreamsomewhere in the run to the line to win with a bit in store. “She did it quite easy in the end, she can be a little bit funny and pull up on you at times, but when the other horse came at her today, she lifted.” McCormick was full of praise for Low and her right-hand man Mike Sandrey for the job they’ve done with the mare, and said her form line this time in is a credit to their work with her. “They’ve handled her and placed her really well, I just get to jump in the cart and drive her but she’s ready to go, they’ve done a great job.” Missmollygoodgolly is raced by Low and the estate of her late husband Derek, with the pair also having bred the mare. The win continued a strong start to the year for McCormick, who has a win and two placings next to his name from six drives within the first two weeks of racing courtesy of two excellent ef-

only local success at Tuesday’s Ashburton meeting, with Midfrew Luisianabeau also breaking through for a nice victory for Brent White.

The big, robust pacer found the front early in his race and never looked back, winning with plenty in store in the hands of Stephen McNally.

Hendrickson returns from injury in fine fettle Jelle Hendrickson’s comeback from injury is well on track, if his efforts in taking victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, On Your Bike Hire, 35km handicap event around the Winchmore Church block on Sunday is anything to go by. Hendrickson and his co-markers worked hard to find the front in the second half of the race. In the four-up sprint to the line, Hendrickson had the final say to the win and lift the Blackburn Cup. Isabella Inglis ensured her first start in senior ranks was a memorable one, riding strongly to secure the second place spoils. Charlotte Cox produced a top ride to charge into third place. Christchurch visitor Simon White was in the thick of finish to take fourth place.

The evergreen Paul Williams and Don Morrison fought out the finish for the top six, with Williams getting the nod by the barest of margins to take fifth place, with Morrison in sixth. Scratch marker Kyle Gray rode the course in a quick 47.28 to secure fastest time honours. Steve Hands and Tony Ward were in the thick of the finish to claim second and third time. The juniors and Division 2 contested a 18km handicap event. Back marker Zoe Spillane produced a top shelf ride to take both the victory and fastest time honours. Zoe covered the distance in 29.21. Sarah Gould kicked the year off in great fashion, securing the second place spoils. Zac Brookland ensured his trip north was worth it, getting up on the line in a hard-fought sprint to take third place. Ryan Gallagher continued his string of good results with fourth place. Laughlin Hall and Copper Spillane rounded out the top six. A good field of division 2 riders went to the line. Kenny Johnston had the best of the bunch sprint to take the win, and in doing so secured fastest time, from Andy Skinner and Brian Ellis. Next week the club will contest a 45km handicap event around the Christies Road block.

Captain back for Cup clash Matt Markham Mid Canterbury will return to the Hawke Cup fold this weekend as they host Southland in Ashburton. The baggy green and golds will take to the middle for the second game of the competition with their first match played out as a draw due to the weather when they took on South Canterbury prior to Christmas. The selectors have opted for a largely known side for the match, which will be played over both Saturday and Sunday on the Ashburton Domain Oval, with two changes from the team that played South Canterbury. Captain William Southby returns to the mix and will lead the side while the talented all-rounder Ryan Bell also comes back into the team after missing the first clash. It’s a strong Mid Canterbury line-up, with a number of in-form players stepping into the mix including Alex Hooper, who was in devastating form with both the bat and the ball last weekend for the Tech Stags. Hooper will be expected to lead the charge with the ball ,where he is likely to be joined at the top of the pace attack by Harry McMillan. The side is: William Southby ©, Ryan Bell, Sam Clark, Devon Flannery, Nick Gilbert, Alex Hooper, Tom Innes, Angus Jemmett, Des Kruger, Harry McMillan and James Southby.

Details of re-arrangements will be advised when known. Unfortunately the Cotula Cup Holiday Classic tournament, held at Ashburton on the 27th and 28th December, was affected by the weather, and the second day was cancelled due to its inclemency. The winners of the first day were declared the tournament winners. Sincere thanks are recorded to club members and officials for all their work and efforts that made the staging of the tournament possible. And all during the holiday break! Thank you everyone! The Jolly Potter fours tournament was played at Temuka Bowling Club over the weekend of January 8 and 9, and was won by Ashburton’s Gavin Eder, Mike Quinn, Murray Anderson, Gordon Sparks. A beautiful sunny Saturday saw a big crowd head down to the Brandon, with many of them setting their sights on a big round to get themselves into the Property Brokers Shootout Final. It was round 4 out of 5 and 63 players were trying to grab one of 19 places. Top score of the day however went to someone who is away when the final is on, Peter Walker shot 2 under par gross for a nett 65 and 43 points, great shooting Peter. We had 3 more players on 41 points, well done to Bruce Day, Wendy Parr and George Brown. How does that leave the Shootout table, I hear you ask? Well with one qualifying round to go Big Bad Bruce sits on the top with 78 points, closely followed by Chris Lovelock on 77 then Bev Chinn and

Dave Robertson looking safe on 76. Heading down the list to 19th spot we find Pauly Greer sitting on 70 points, so by my reckoning as long as you have got at least one round in so far you should head down to the course on Saturday, chuck in a 40 plus pointer and take your place in the final. After Saturday’s game we will know the finalists, a form guide may well be written and posted. An auction to sell the runners will be held and the big race will kick off on Sunday January 30 at 10am. This is always a great spectacle, well supported by big crowds and at the end of the day Bruce will win another club sub thanks to the great gang at Property Brokers. In other news the Harvey Norman Classic is filling up fast. Remember we can only guarantee entry to the first 100 fully paid up pairs. The Classic is on February 12 and 13, but don’t hang around, it will fill up, it will be an amazing two days, make sure you are part of it. That will do for now, good golfing.
