SHOP smart SHOP loca ‘Ashburton’s a place you can trust’ Lili Haydon Sam Millar has hammered in as many nails as his dad, but that’s probably one of the few things that’s stayed constant for the family building business. Because much has certainly changed in the past 40 years for Ashburton building firm, Des Millar Construction. Sam’s father, Des Millar, started the business in 1980 when he decided to go out on his own with just a hammer and one employee. Fast forward to now, the company has 11 staff, including Sam’s wife, Sarah Millar, who runs the show behind the scenes. And it’s quite some show, with Sam, now the company managing director, having joined the business in 2004. They build residential homes and complete renovations and have worked on a vast range of construction projects throughout Mid Canterbury, from minor repair work, right through to high end architectural homes. Importantly, they live by their motto when it comes to building. “Honesty and quality. They are our priorities,” he said. Another priority is their local focus. Millar buys all his building materials locally and employs locals, two of whom are apprentices. “Ninety per cent (of their work) comes through Ashburton shops and 80 per cent is still driven by farming,” Millar said. And now is a busy time to be a builder with demand for hous-

issues during the height of the pandemic. “We just have to make sure we order in advance, rather than a month out like we used to.” Millar also has his hands full at home, with children, Archie, 5, and Charlie, 3, keeping him busy. “When I go to work – it’s like

a day off,” Miller said with a chuckle. After spending some of his summer break in Christchurch, he was still pleased to get back home. “Ashburton is a place you can trust, it is safe. “People care about you – you are not just another person

From small beginnings: The Stable Door Equine owner, Sonia Waddell: “It all started with just a trestle table.’’

Waddell – From back door to full-on store Lili Haydon Talk about an eye for an opportunity. Sonia Waddell has just that, having converted her garage at the back of her property into The Stable Door Equine in Ashburton when she saw a gap in the equestrian market. “I had to go out of town to get supplies to either Christchurch or South Canterbury, and sometimes, I even had to buy from

overseas,” she said. So four years ago, Waddell started selling horse supplements from her garage. “It all started with just a trestle table.” Now the renovated garage is a full-blown converted shop, filled with horse supplements, feed, dressage, tote bags and masks with horses on them. Waddell even has stuff for dogs, too. You name it, she has it in her business in Hepburns Road, Allenton. Her love and passion for horses never stops and through Covid-19 Waddell was lucky to be able to operate as an essential service. “We did contactless (selling),’’ she said.

“People could go do their groceries and then swing through and pick up their orders.’’ And the devotion does not stop at one Waddell, with horses in the family blood. “Mum, myself and the girls ride,” Waddell said. Her daughters, Charlotte and Natasha Waddell, are the fourth generation of women in the family to compete professionally. Natasha also has an equestrian school at the back of the property as well. “She breaks in people’s horses and schools them,” Waddell said. Now her operation has expanded into selling all kinds of products; from as far away

as Australia, the UK and even America. But that does not mean she leaves the locals out of the mix. Before Christmas, Waddell organised local businesses to join forces, such as Trains N Models and Beez Kneez to sell at the shop in the lead-up to the festive season. A one-stop shop for all. Waddell also sponsors various A&P shows, like the Mayfield and Methven shows by donating vouchers, gifts and garlands. “I support local events because they bring outsiders to events, so then they can spend their money here (Ashburton),” she said.

The Waddell family also travel up and down the country for various equestrian events. “We are right in the middle (of the South Island) so for getting to events, it’s perfect,” she said. The Stable Door Equine, being 100 per cent locally-owned, was one of the reasons why Waddell supported the Guardian’s Shop Smart Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is Campaign, which is aimed to support and promote businesses and enterprises in the district. “The people in this town are so diverse,’’ she said. “There is so much on our doorstep. That’s why we have never left.”

Pleased to be receiving tourists again Malcolm Hopwood

Former Ashburton residents Anna and Rob Aitken are delighted to see the first plane load of tourists arrive in the Cook Islands. The Aitkens own the Rarotonga Daydreamers Resort and, like all tourism operators, they’re relieved that quarantine-free travel (QFT) between New Zealand and the Cook Islands has resumed. It’s been more than five months since the Cooks Islands Government barred all tourist flights into Rarotonga after the Delta outbreak began in Auckland Before then, the Cook Islands and New Zealand QFT had been in place for three months after the pandemic-enforced 15-month border closure. The Aitkens say bookings are much slower than last year when the borders opened in May. They have a few Christchurch travellers arriving in the next few weeks but expect an influx of visitors over the first term break in April. They’d especially like to welcome any New Zealanders,

especially those from Mid Canterbury, but it comes with Covid conditions. All tourists from New Zealand must be double vaccinated, have been living here for the past 10 days, be over 12 years of age and have had a negative PCR Covid test within 48 hours of boarding. “It’s probable that under 12-yearolds will be allowed entry once five to 11-year-olds are vaccinated in the Cook Islands, which we believe could be as early as February,” Rob said. “Most shops require masks to be worn in store with some places only allowing entry to double vaccinated people.” They’ve been assured by the Cook Islands Government that the border will stay open and any Covid outbreak would be managed by their Ministry of Health. “Accommodators and other tourist and service operators are being trained to administer antigen tests to anyone who might show symptoms of Covid,” Rob said. “They’ll be asked to self-isolate at their accommodation and Te Marae Ora (Ministry of Health) will be notified.’’ Unfortunately, about 300 workers have left the Cook Islands to fill jobs in New Zealand, which Rob said could result in some “services might initially be limited due to staff shortages”.

Head our way: Former Mid Cantabrians Rob and Anna Aitken are welcoming New Zealanders back to the Cook Islands, especially their own resort, now that quarantine-free travel has resumed.

Blooming marvellous donation by youngster Maddison Gourlay Young sunflower entrepreneur Angus Laing has finally made his donation to St John Ambulance Ashburton. Little Angus, 6, had been selling sunflower seedlings at his front gate in Allenton for four months, with half the profits going to St John Ashburton. Angus was able to donate $303, along with a bunch of sunflowers, and he was thrilled to get a special tour around the ambulances and station by St John emergency medical technician Geoffrey Barr, who accepted the donation on behalf of the organisation. “Thanks, everyone for buying my sunflowers,” said Angus, whose favourite part of his visit to the station and donating the money was having the honour of turning on the siren.

Angus’ mum, Charlotte Riley, said that St John meant a lot to her family as they have recently relied on their service. “Angus lost both his grandfathers here in Ashburton since we started this sunflower project late last year and St John was a mighty help with both these special men,” Riley said. “Very sad but (it) made us all the more grateful to have the service and wonderful officers caring for our loved ones.” Riley said she was also thankful for how supportive the community had been towards the sunflower sale. “One man gave a whopping $100 donation and others have been generous too,” Riley said. “People have dropped off containers and one kind man dropped in a handmade wooden tray for Angus to carry his sunflowers to the gate with.” Angus and his mum were excited to keep selling sunflowers this year and making a donation to another important organisation. And Angus promised even more, saying it would be “bigger and brighter”.

Calling all the cuties Daryl Holden Cuteness here, there and everywhere. Babies, I’m talking about. Mid Canterbury babies, at that. We’ve been thrilled by the entries for Mid Canterbury’s 2021 Cutest Baby of the Year promotion. It’s not really a competition, as such, because all babies are cute and should be cherished. But this is a chance for proud parents, guardians and even grandparents to show off their pride and joy and share it with the community. The promotion is open to all Mid Canterbury babies born in 2021, which, to be clear, is anywhere from January 1 through to December 31 last year. You can enter on Facebook or by emailing: editor@theguardian.co.nz Include the baby’s full name, date of birth, where the baby was born and the names of the parents or guardians. And please tell us why the baby’s arrival was just so special. Entries close on Monday, January 24, and one of the many to admire is smiley Fox Christopher Mitchell, who was born on January 27 in Ashburton Hospital. Fox was actually due on February 14, which is the anniversary of parents Riki-lee Marshall and Tyler Mitchell. “But Fox had other plans and decided he couldn’t wait to come out and meet everyone,’’ Riki-lee Marshall said. When he arrived at 7.34am, a full set of red hair was hard to miss. “We had picked the name before we saw his red hair, but he definitely suits it!,’’ she said. “And now he is nearly one and has been the most rewarding, fulfilling year full of so much love with our wee man.’’

A couple of heroes stepped up when it mattered in another nasty car accident in Ashburton. A two-car, head-on crash on State Highway 1 in Tinwald late on Sunday afternoon resulted in three people suffering moderate injuries, while another was in a serious condition, a police spokeswoman said. An Ashburton Guardian follower remembered hearing the noise from the crash. He also paid tribute to off-duty heroes making a difference. “The one in Tinwald was pretty nasty, heard a hell of a bang,” Mike Sheehan said. “Plenty of people helping out, including an off-duty doctor and a policeman.” Emergency services were called to the scene at around 4.50pm and the road was opened again shortly after 6pm. That was the second of two nasty accidents in the region on Sunday. The first involved two motorbikes and a car, leaving one person with serious injuries and one with moderate injuries. The accident happened near the Rakaia overbridge in Bankside at 2.50pm. Guardian Facebook follower Natasha Oliver described what she thought it was like having to drive on those roads. “I drive between Rakaia and Rolleston almost every day and it’s crazy every day,” she said.

Anger at pool shut out

Council defends decision to allow outsiders to train in centre Maddison Gourlay Ashburton locals aren’t happy at being shut out of the water at the EA Networks Centre while a visiting Christchurch swim team was allowed to train there. The aquatic centre has been closed to the public for scheduled maintenance since January 10 and expects to reopen on January 31. But the Christchurch-based Jasi Swim Club was still able to train in the water last week, while locals had to head to the Tinwald pool for a swim. But they could only have a dip in Tinwald after 12.30pm as the Ashburton swim club had booked the pool until then. Guardian Facebook follower Kelli Foster called the EA Networks Centre’s pool decision elitist as she fired up at the Ashburton District Council’s decision to allow a Christchurch club to train ahead of locals. “So, it’s okay to let the elite use the pool, but locals who pay rates aren’t entitled because of a so called three-week clean?,” Foster said. “Seems like the council is more than happy to stop the fun for the holidays.” The council’s community services group manager, Steve Fabish, explained the situation in a story on Saturday, saying the Jasi Swim Club had a long-standing relationship with EA Networks Centre and booked every January. “We were able to work with the swim club to ensure they were thoroughly inducted to be in the pool space, although contractors were completing maintenance,” Fabish said. They were not able to use the pool changing rooms because they were fully under construction, with flooring removed, painting, and the showers upgraded. “We have worked with the swim club to swim in the specific hours that other pools could be worked on, leaving the main pool maintenance to be commenced as soon as the swimmers completed their swim.” But that reasoning didn’t wash with upset locals.

Swim time Where and when: EA Networks Centre: Closed to the public for maintenance until January 31. Tinwald Pool: The Tinwald outdoor pool has been opened for lane swimmers from 8am until 9.30am daily. The school holiday programme and the Ashburton Swim Club use it from 9.30am to 12.30pm. It then reopens to the public until 8pm. Rakaia Pool: Open for key holders only as of Monday January 17. Open 9am - 9pm, 7 days a week. Mount Somers Pool: Visit the Mount Somers store or the Mt Somers Holiday Park to pay and collect your entry code. Open 9am-8pm, 7 days a week “While this is the best time for the council to close it as so many people are away, it’s so unfair for the people who are in town,” Janet Hadley said. “Tinwald pool is amazing, but it’s too small to accommodate lessons and the town over the school holidays. Poor kids.” Nicola Fielding questioned who the council should support. “(They) look after (an) outside community swim team but don’t worry about the locals that support them the rest of the year and pay rates.’’ Trish Heney’s views may have captured that of many. “The pools are either closed for maintenance or not,’’ she said. “How can a swim team be allowed to use the facilities if the public can’t?’’ Letters to the editor, page 21.

No MIQ space for contractors Stressed rural contractors, told in mid-December they could bring in 200 more skilled machinery operators, have not yet seen a single arrival given any MIQ space. Rural Contractors NZ chief executive Andrew Olsen said that despite the best efforts of Ministry for Primary Industries’ staff to help find MIQ beds for the

approved operators, the indications are that few, if any, would be available until March at the earliest for rural contractors. “This will mean many of them will pass on the option to bring workers in. It’s just too late, too hard and too stressful for contractors who are working their guts out trying to help farmers get in crops and ensure animals

can be fed.” Olsen said that his organisation and Federated Farmers, supported by MPI, have done everything they could to help contractors meet a crushing labour shortage. “We understand and respect that the resurgence of another Covid-19 variant and border entry changes have put the squeeze

on MIQ,’’ he said. “That said, those risks would have been part of the assessment when we had ministerial approval just on a month ago to bring in the desperately needed 200 machinery operators. “Now, rural contractors whose work is essential to food production and our export economy, find themselves towards the

back of the MIQ queue.” Olsen said getting MIQ space was like peeling an onion. “It’s layer after layer and it brings tears of frustration for our members who are already working impossibly long hours and as yet have not even been able to lodge Expressions of Interest for staff positions which ministers had approved to come in.”

Wet spell may dent early crop yields Heather Chalmers Mid Canterbury arable farmers are counting the cost of an extended spell of wet weather in early December which may have dented yields in early seed crops. As the harvest gears up, the impacts of the unseasonal wet weather are becoming apparent. Ashburton received 143mm of rain in December compared with the historic average of 67mm for the month. This included 93mm from December 15 to 17. Methven mixed cropping farmer John McCaw said he had cut some brassica and had just cut his first ryegrass and cocksfoot crops this harvest. “I expect the early ryegrass will be a disappointment as it was trying to flower and pollinate during that 10-day wet spell in December. A lack of sunshine and heat and pollination will take its toll. “It is too early to really tell. They are quite heavy crops, but heavy with regrowth. “Later flowering varieties have had a much easier time and are looking promising,” McCaw said. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury arable chairman Darrell Hydes said the wet weather had resulted in a lot of late season disease on autumn wheat. He had harvested an early ryegrass crop which recorded average yields. “Most of the crops are looking good, but

Methven mixed cropping farmer John McCaw. Wet weather during pollination looks to have dented the yields of some early seed crops. we won’t really know until we get the header into it.” Hydes has both irrigated and dryland

crops on his farm near Methven and expects there won’t be too much yield difference between the two this harvest, unlike

in dry years. Arable farmers are now hoping for hot, dry, settled weather, he said.

Gilberts without prize ayrshire cow for dairy show Heather Chalmers Mid Canterbury’s Gilbert family are again making the long journey to exhibit at the New Zealand Dairy Event at Feilding later this month but without their champion ayrshire cow. In the 2020-21 showing season, the Gilberts won an unprecedented clean sweep of dairy titles at showing events with their ayrshire, Pukekaraka Elle Delilah, including the all breeds supreme exhibit at the 2021 NZDE. It was the first time an ayrshire had won supreme exhibit over the bigger numbers of jersey and holstein friesian cows on show. The six-year-old proved untouchable every time she stepped out last season – crossing the Cook Strait four times. She is not included in this year’s team. The Gilbert family will have the biggest team from its Glenalla and Snowfed farms and the longest trip to NZDE. It will truck 33-head for six exhibitors across the Cook Strait. The family, led by Peter and Anne Gilbert, have two dairy farms, at Winchmore and Rakaia milking a total of 1200 cows. The couple, along with their sons Nick and Michael and Luke, all have a strong interest in pedigree cattle and run three registered pedigree herds – jersey, holstein friesian and ayrshire. Glenalla and Snowfed will have the toughest recovery to settle their team after 14 hours of trucking. The Gilbert family is also offering its whole team for sale in a “sell the show string” tag sale. This excludes their clients’ animals who either board at their farm, or who are showing in their team. The tag sale format they are using is new for New Zealand, but is common throughout the world. It involves Glenalla and Snowfed pricing their animals during the week.

The 2021 supreme champion, Pukekaraka Elle Delilah, owned by the Gilbert family in Mid Canterbury will sit this year out. If the price works for buyers, they will sell them. “We felt it was time we had a sale and the tag format has been successful in other countries, so we thought we’d try it there,” Peter Gilbert said.

Organisers have reported an exciting bounce-back after being forced to cancel New Zealand’s premier dairy show event two of the last three years. It was cancelled in 2019 and 2020 because of cattle disease mycoplasma bovis and since then organisers have been navigating Covid-19. At NZDE’s 10th anniversary show in 2018 there were 389head entries tabled. Last year 267 animals were entered, and this year there are 70 additional animals catalogued – 337 (92

jerseys from 32 exhibitors, 46 combined breeds from 20 exhibitors, 75 ayrshire from 34 exhibitors and 124 holstein friesian from 49 exhibitors). The main change to the NZDE this year is that it will be a vaccine-certificated event, which will be policed by security guards. However, that has not put off exhibitors who are hungry to get back into the ring with their best cows. The event’s “Summer Sensation Sale” on Wednesday, January 26 starts from 6pm, in addition to Glenalla and Snowfed’s “sell the show string” tag sale which will be running through the week.

Crusaders coach tackles well-being with farmers

Make sure you have someone to talk to when life gets tough. That was the key message from Crusaders’ coach Scott Robertson and a variety of rural mental health advocates at a packed gathering of the Ellesmere farming community. Ellesmere Sustainable Agriculture Inc (ESAI), with support from the Ministry for Primary Industries, invited its members and community to listen to four speakers sharing their experiences around leadership, stress, anxiety and depression and the strategies to cope with the pressures life creates in rural communities. A capacity crowd of nearly 100 farmers, their families and their neighbours were captivated by Robertson sharing some of the secrets of the culture that created the Crusaders dynasty, including their methods to handle setbacks and stress, which according to the master coach could apply to both the rugby field as well as the farm. Robertson explained how he built his coaching career on doing the hard yards, learning from others who have gone before him and building a support group he could lean back on. He said that earlier in his career he used former Canterbury coach Rob Penney as his sounding board and these days gets on the phone with former Crusaders coach Robbie Deans for mentoring. “You always need to have a plan or a person to call when things get difficult,” Robertson told the audience at the Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall near Leeston. He explained that each person responded differently to adversity. “Some players get angry, some get quiet and some withdraw,” said Robertson, who stressed how important it was for all of us to recognise and understand how we react to stress and respond accordingly. “Instead of withdrawing or getting angry, it is better to take action. Talk to someone, get a team around you, stay connected. If you stay connected, you can stay on course.” After answering questions about rugby as well as mental health, the coach handed the floor to three other speakers, who each support the rural community and their mental health. of withdrawing or getting angry, it is better to take “ Instead action. Talk to someone, get a team around you, stay

connected. If you stay connected, you can stay on course.

High-profile rural sports MC and commentator Craig ‘Wiggy’ Wiggins, from Ashburton, spoke about the unexpected demand for a weekly drop-in Zoom call he started for farmers during the first Covid lockdown. “Lockdown shut the front gate and anxiety levels went through the roof,” Wiggins said. He said that when people got down, they struggled to remember the good times.

Elle Perriam spoke about her personal journey of depression after her partner took his own life, and trying everything “to get rid of the pain”. She explained how the depression eventually helped her to understand the mindset of people considering taking their own lives and helped to create Will To Live New Zealand (www.willtolivenz.com), which helps farmers with their mental health struggles. Perriam, who grew up in Haast, but now

Scott Robertson lives in Leeston, has reached over 15,000 farmers through her rural change programme in recent months and has raised funding for farmers to access private counselling, instead of waiting for months through the public health system. She encouraged all farmers to reach out if they wanted to improve their well-being, even those who don’t have urgent challenges.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You, like the other animals, respond and adapt to your environment. The people, things and routines that rule your days have a stronger effect than willpower. Changing your lifestyle changes your habits. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): One approach to the problem at hand is to starve it out. Don’t give it the fuel that your attention so readily provides. Ignore, neglect and shun the thing until it goes away. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You can’t help the affinity you feel for those who need your help. You’ll like them more because of your investment in them. They don’t need to pay you back. Connecting with you is payment enough. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’ve unhooked yourself from dozens of expectations you had of someone. Now you’re able to experience the person as they are instead of as you hoped they would be. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): An unwanted behaviour will help you give up the fight. Once you stop, you free yourself up to pursue an understanding of these coping mechanisms. You cannot influence that which you don’t understand. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): There is satisfaction to be mined from small gains if you’re willing to accept the gift. Such acceptance will include a pause while you check out the features and offer a gratitude most sincere and specific. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): The places that used to energise you have gone stale or no longer exist. “New environments” can be taken as a metaphor. Go out in search of that very alive feeling. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Improvement is practically effortless today because it comes with a cosmic assist. You happen to want the thing that also is in the highest and best interest of yourself and many others. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): People think they know what’s real but there are so many tricks. Nature, light, fog, memory... the tricks of the digital age are endless. You’ll know what’s real today because you’ll feel it. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You need to be your own advocate, and you will fulfil the role once you embrace it. Do you think you deserve an advocate? That’s the first block to get over. Hint: You do. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): It’s odd, but people who are on top of the world and experiencing high-flying success may not be half as happy as those who are struggling. Embrace these days as though they were the good ole days. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Someone asking for your service is, in a way, a compliment. It says that they trust you, and makes you want to rise to meet their expectation and then soar beyond it.

Djokovic saga an avoidable mess

S

o that’s it then. The Novak Djokovic circus is over. The tennis superstar, the world No. 1, and arguably the greatest player ever to pick up a racquet, is gone. On a plane back to nowhere, licking his wounds after being deported from Melbourne on the eve of the Australian Open that he was a strong chance to win for a 10th time to claim a record 21st men’s grand slam in the process to confirm his immortality status. Who would have thought the Australian Government, and three judges, would stand in his way of greatness? Not Djokovic, that’s for sure. But that’s exactly what’s happened, with the full bench panel of the Federal Court of Australia ruling in in favour of the Immigration Minister Alex Hawke’s decision to cancel his visa and send Djokovic packing.

Daryl Holden Their decision was unanimous but, oddly, they didn’t provide reasons, explaining that they would do so in the coming days. Whatever their rationale, you could rightly argue that Djokovic in many ways only had himself to blame. After all, this was a player who tested positive for Covid a second time last month but still turned up for a promotional photo-shoot and interview the next day, posing for pictures without a mask. This was also a man who blamed one of his assistants for concealing, or conveniently forgetting, the number of countries

he’d visited in the build-up to his arrival in Melbourne. He probably should have taken responsibility for filling in, or at least overseeing, his immigration forms himself.

in those of need, also needs to be considered. The “Joker’’ has personally donated millions of dollars to hospitals and causes struggling under the burden of Covid-19 in

didn’t really want him “ Australia in Melbourne and should have made that clear to the man, and Tennis Australia, a long time ago.

That doesn’t make good reading but, on the flip side, not for one moment do I believe he actively promotes anti-vax views, as Minister Hawke was so concerned about. For a start, Djokovic has openly said his children get various vaccines and his extremely generous philanthropic ways, and support

Serbia, Spain and Italy. Apparently, he even set up and paid for free vaccinations at two ATP and one WTA professional tournament on his Belgrade property so that players and coaches could be double vaccinated. If he was an anti-vaxxer, why would he do that if, indeed, that was correct?

In the end, the whole issue was clearly an avoidable mess. Australia didn’t really want him in Melbourne and should have made that clear to the man, and Tennis Australia, a long time ago. Instead, what did the hosts do? They granted him a visa and, almost immediately, regretted it. Clearly, it hasn’t been a great week for governance, from the borders to the ministry and, eventually, the Government itself. So where to now for Djokovic? Will he change his Covid-19 vaccination stance? I doubt it. Now he also has to consider the very real threat of not being allowed back in Australia for three years as part of the deportation ruling. Three years? It might as well be for life for the 34-year-old because why on earth would he ever want to come back anyway? I certainly wouldn’t.

hat is an agate? Agate is a common rock formation, consisting of chalcedony and quartz as its primary components, with a wide variety of colours. Its IMA symbol is Aga. Agates are primarily formed within volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Why are agates so special? The stone itself is distinguished by impressive shades of natural colours and contrast in the band patterns it contains. The characteristic band patterns – which begin at the centre of the rock and move outwards like the rings on a tree – are visually dynamic. It would appear Maddy Hooper has the Hall family ‘Rock Hound’ gene and her grandfather will be very relieved about that. A big part of our trips to Rangi are agate hunts. Although I appreciate the beauty of some of the agates, they don’t really spin my tyres. I’m guessing that is the main reason why I am completely hopeless at finding them. In all honesty it’s just my competitive nature that keeps me searching for them. What’s competitive about finding agates I hear you ask. All agates found are presented to the agate master aka father-in-law Robin

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR Hall, who is an agate legend around these parts. All agates are initially placed into two categories, ‘keepers’ or ‘over the shoulder’. The latter are named after an action from the agate master when a non-agate is presented on the beach. The agate master will throw the non-agate over his shoulder onto the beach with a scientific explanation as to why it didn’t make the keepers’ group like “nope”. All keepers are judged, while at Rangi, and one is named agate of the trip. All of the keepers are then sorted through and the good ones will be cut and polished by the agate master. After this process, the agate of the trip title can change hands. To date I have found three ‘keepers’ and 4709 ‘non-agates’. Maddy has picked up the agate and run with it. She loves hunting for agates. Initially I think the agate master placed Maddy in a similar category as her

A few of the ‘keepers’.

father but on her second agate hunt, she showed that she may have the ‘force’. The third rock she picked up and presented to the agate master was a “beauty”. This is a technical term for an agate that goes straight to the top of the agate of the trip leaderboard. Is it wrong that I scoffed to myself and thought, what a complete fluke?

LETTERS Swimming pool decision irks The comments from Ashburton District Council’s community services group manager, Steve Fabish, regarding the EA Networks Centre Pool being closed to locals, but open to a Christchurch swim team appear arrogant and dismissive of local swimmers. A Jasi Swim Club team have the choice of multiple swim facilities in Christchurch, including their three-pool Jellie Park complex. To give them sole use of a closed pool, while locals are shut out, is unacceptable. Pools are not only for youngsters in swim teams, but for all the community of adults from 20 to 80-years plus, and younger non-competitive swimmers. Adults swim for health, recreational, rehab and training reasons. Each to their own. Some masters’ swimmers are training for the New Zea-

land Masters’ Games in Dunedin in three weeks. However, this point appears to be lost on Mr Fabish. I have seen very few adults at Tinwald pool in contrast to the usual dozens that swim mornings at EA Networks’ pool. Local adults pay for our local pool, so should have priority. Alison Fleming

SHORT & SHARP Laking on song Mid Canterbury jockey, Jason Laking’s bid to reach 400 career winners drew closer at the weekend. Laking, who has been in sublime form in recent weeks in the saddle, had to wait until the last race at Saturday’s Wingatui meeting to get on the board, but moved to 398 career riding wins when he did. Laking produced a peach of a ride to win on the Jamie Richards trained Zouluminous in the last, sitting just off the speed before unleashing around the final bend with the gelding winning comfortably. He gets a chance to keep the winning groove going this week with meetings at Riccarton and Gore.

Morrison double John Morrison made his trip to Blenheim over the weekend a successful one with a winning double on Sunday. The in-form driver picked up victory early in the day with Barnstormer for Dean Taylor, before also saluting on the evergreen Take After Me late in the day. It’s been a steady opening two weeks of the new season for Morrison with four winners and 10 placings from his 35 drives.

Nationals under way The Mid Canterbury sunshine turned it on for visiting players to Ashburton on Sunday for the first day of the Croquet New Zealand Golf Croquet Nationals which are being held at the Waireka Croquet Club. Hosted by the South Canterbury Croquet Association, but held here in Ashburton, the event lasts for the course of this week. Eight combinations took to the greens on Sunday to begin the pairs which will be played through until today with the finals set for this afternoon. With no time limit on matches, a number of the games went right to the depths as players analysed and decided on how to best play the match with some very close encounters unfolding during Sunday’s opening day of play. Once the doubles are finished players will tomorrow turn their attention toward the singles. Fourteen players are entered to compete in the singles event which will run through until Saturday when the finals will be held. Players have come from far and wide for the event with six associations from across New Zealand having players competing. Play begins each morning at 8.30am with spectators welcome to head along to the Phillip Street venue to take in the action. PHOTO MATT MARKHAM 160122-MM-003

After a busy week at Argyle Park, the South Island Clubs’ Under 15 softball tournament finished up on Sunday under perfect blue skies. The Guardian popped along to capture local side, Fairfield in action in their final match of the tournament on Sunday morning.

Three wise men The Methven Trotting Club’s special promotion for their race meeting next week is locked and loaded. The three members of the Harness Racing New Zealand 3000 win club; Tony Herlihy, Maurice McKendry and Ricky May will all be guest drivers at the club’s meeting – picking up drives in a number of races on the programme where they will battle it out against each other for overall supremacy. The three will get randomly allocated one of the top three rated horses in selected races on the programme with the TAB expected to come on board and provide some additional promotional bet options for the day.

Mid Canterbury etches out draw Matt Markham A drawn encounter on the Ashburton Domain Oval has kept Mid Canterbury’s chances of a shot at Hawke Cup glory in their zone alive, but it’s going to take some big results to get it over the line with two matches remaining. The Mid Canterbury side etched out a dour draw with Southland over two days of enthralling cricket at the domain, including a spell of play where they had to put their heads down and fight hard to stay in the match late on the second day. The locals won the toss on Saturday morning and on a pitch that looked like it would do a bit after a few hours of the hot Canterbury Plains sun beating down on it, decided to bat first. A shaky start saw Angus Jemmett back in the shed after just four overs when he was given out LBW, but those around him put their heads down and looked to build a bit of an innings. Nick Gilbert was on the front foot and scored 28 while Devon Flannery came within two of a half century before he was removed. He combined with Des Kruger (35) for a crucial 60 run partnership which set a nice platform while James Southby contributed with a solid 26. Three quick wickets saw the side in trouble though as they went from 3-112 to 5-116, but luckily there was a bit of a wag to the Mid Canterbury tail. Tech Stag teammates, Alex Hooper (34) and Ryan Bell (29) batting well down the order, put together a 49 run eighth wicket stand to see Mid Canterbury over

the 200-run mark before they were all out for 218 after 74 overs. It was a sub-par score, but still something to defend and Mid Canterbury walked out into the field keen to see a first innings lead in their hands late on Saturday afternoon. Two LBW shouts early to Hooper with the ball went his way and the home side were off to the best possible start with Southland in trouble at 2-11 after six but a 118run third wicket stand steadied the ship well into the second day of play. The pitch started to offer a lot more to the medium pace and spin bowlers and after an hour of play on Sunday, Mid Canterbury had their breakthrough with a Ryan Bell run out. That set the wheels in motion and Bell then removed the other batsmen on his way to taking 3-53 from a big

32 over spell. Southland managed to work their way through to 257 before they were all out and with 108 overs faced in the middle by the visitors, it was going to take something pretty special to see a result out of the match. While Bell was effective with the ball, Hooper once again showed his worth claiming 4-71 off an impressive 25 overs in the heat. Walking back out to bat for the second time, Mid Canterbury had a choice to put the foot down and try and build a lead and get on top of the match in a short period of time or, put the heads down and bat for time to try and play for the draw. The Southland bowlers made the decision for them though. They tore through the Mid Canterbury top order and af-

ter 10 overs Gilbert, Kruger and Flannery were all back in the pavilion after having used barely any ink on the scoresheet. Three for 35 pretty quickly became 5-65 when Jemmett, who dug in for 38, was removed but the clock was against Southland and the match was declared a draw with Mid Canterbury on 89-6. With two non-results from their first two matches, but points on the board all the same Mid Canterbury will now need to chase victories against both Otago Country and North Otago in their two remaining matches if they are to force their way into the zone play-off. They head to Alexandra on January 29 to play Otago Country and will then host North Otago at home in what could be a crucial match late in February.

Short scoreboard Mid Canterbury 218 (Devon Flannery 48, Des Kruger 35, Alex Hooper 34, Ryan Bell 29, Nick Gilbert 28, James Southby 26) Southland (257 (Alex Hooper 4-71, Ryan Bell 3-53, Tom Innes 1-36, James Southby 1-50) Second Innings Mid Canterbury 89-6 (Angus Jemmett 38, William Southby 22)

It’s one of New Zealand’s most elite club level bowls tournaments that attracts the best of the best from around the country – and yesterday afternoon as the finals loomed for the Stu Buttar Invitation Pairs, an almost all Mid Canterbury final looked on the cards. The three-day event, which sees players playing Australian Pairs (four bowls per player in a 2x2x2x2 format) is one of the most hotly contested tournaments each bowls season at the Burnside Bowling Club. Forty-eight combinations came to play in the event with the top two teams from each of the eight sections played for on Friday and Saturday making it through to the top division. And when the dust had settled on Saturday morning both Rodney Greaney and his Christchurch playing partner Paul Matheson and the Methven combo of Craig Carter and Jeff Nowell found themselves up with the big boys and girls in the top division. Greaney and Matheson breezed through the first stage of post section with two wins and a draw from their three games while Carter and Nowell managed to sneak

through to the semi-finals with two wins, including victory over the multiple world champions, Jo Edwards and Val Smith. That set them up with a semi-final clash against current Black Jack starts, Tony Grantham and Mike Kernaghan for a shot to play in the final. The Methven duo played their hearts out against their elite rivals and with three ends to go looked to be in control of the match before a disastrous end saw them drop a six to lose the lead and leave them trailing by four shots with two ends to play. They narrowed down to three and Carter looked to have played the near perfect bowl to at least get a draw with his final bowl of the match, but just missed the intended target and they lost 16-18 to finish third equal. Greaney and Matheson were playing on the rink next to them in the semi-finals, taking on Canterbury’s Matt and Mike Small and they too found themselves in a tight spot late in the match with the scores level. They managed to get over the line though to set up a final clash with Kernaghan and Grantham. But it wasn’t to be for the Allenton bowler as the class of the international pairing shone through and they won the final 18-6. The result continued a good two weeks for Greaney and Matheson who also made it down to the last eight in the Bowls New Zealand National Pairs a week earlier.

Matt Markham The chance to showcase the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre to some of the elite in tennis circles around New Zealand and further afield over the course of last week is being marked as a huge success. Mid Canterbury hosted a J4 tournament for the International Tennis Federation, featuring some of the most exciting up and coming players in the land, including some local and wellknown names, last week and the feedback has been all positive. Patrick O’Rourke, who controlled the tournament for the ITF, said the week had gone smoothly. “It’s been a great week, and this is a fantastic venue for tennis,” he said. For many out-of-town players, coaches and supporters it was a good opportunity to understand the purpose-built facility’s possibilities as a future venue and the hope is that it will only enhance the standing of Mid Canterbury for future events of the same nature. More than 50 players stepped onto the newly refurbished front courts of the tennis centre for the tournament to play singles with 23 entries also included in the doubles matches across the week as well.

And in the boys’ event, a wellknown name to Mid Canterbury tennis prevailed. Former local and rising star, Diego Quispe-Kim returned to his old stomping ground and walked away with success claiming the doubles title alongside playing partner, Duncan McCall with a dominant performance across the course of the event. Quispe-Kim couldn’t quite make it a double for the week though and was knocked out in

the semi-finals of the singles of which the finals were played on Saturday morning. The boys’ singles featured a number of local players including Ryan Watt, Jake Parsons and Ben Smith with Smith the only one to advance through the first round of play. The boys’ singles were won by Whangarei tennis prodigy Daniel Hammond who beat Auckland’s Matthew Browning in the final. The girls’ singles, which were

also completed on Saturday morning, saw local player Jess Aldridge in action and she won her way through to the second round before she exited the tournament. The final was a gripping encounter between two Auckland players, Renee Zhang and Shona Nakano. Nakano emerged victorious in the match, winning 6-2, 6-4 with some excellent tennis being produced by the pair.

Ravenscroft destroys Star The Tech Stags got back into the winning groove on the weekend as they look to consolidate their standing in South Canterbury Cricket’s Tweedy Cup. Seven days after a shock loss to Temuka to open their 2022 account, the Stags made short work of their challenge against Star on the Technical wicket, cruising to a seven-wicket victory. Star won the toss and chose to bat first at the Ashburton Domain – a decision they would come to rue as the Tech openers set about taking them to task. At 31-4 after eight overs, they needed a partnership and got one, worth almost 60 runs which suggested that a fightback was on the cards – but the final five wickets fell pretty quickly after that as the visitors were restricted to 108 all out in the 24th over. Bevan Ravenscroft was the chief destroyer in red and black claiming an impressive five wickets on his way to the damaging figures of 5-7 off his 6.3 overs. Harry Jones was also excellent with the ball in hand taking 3-16 from the top of the bowling attack. With 108 to chase, the Tech mantra was always going to be fast runs as they looked to maintain their net run rate which could be crucial when it comes to play-off time, but it the rapid action didn’t look to great early on the run chase. Jason Morrison and Ben Niles both fell with in the first three overs and when Kieran Hunt fell a few overs later Tech were 37-3.

Bevan Ravenscroft took five wickets as Tech crushed Star by seven wickets on Saturday.

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

It required some steady heads and Will McKee (43) and Matt Tait (32) were up to the task as they put their heads down and guided their side home with 22 overs to spare. The win consolidates Tech in

second on the standings, helped by the loss of Celtic on the weekend, but there’s a big match looming this weekend against the table-topping Pleasant Point at home. They’ll welcome back their rep-

resentative players for the clash which will be a big help and after looking likely to beat the competition leaders twice this season, the Tech lads will be keen to actually make it happen this weekend. Meanwhile, the weekend’s re-

sults weren’t quite so good for fellow local side, Allenton. They crumbled to defeat against Temuka, again failing to reach 100 runs with the bat, in a match which saw their outside chance of sneaking into the top four slip out of their grasp. Playing at the Temuka Oval, Temuka won the toss and elected to bat and compiled a decent, if not spectacular 208 before they were all out in the 50th over. Bowling honours were shared among the Allenton players with Hasdeep Singh, Manpreet Hakkla, Satveer Singh and Vijay Kambooy each grabbing a brace of wickets. The score looked achievable if the Allenton batsmen could get a bit of momentum and spend some time out in the middle, but like the previous week where they lost wickets too regularly, they found themselves in trouble early. With three men back in the sheds and only seven runs on the board, the task was always going to be difficult, and it proved as such with only four players reaching double figures and Kambooj scoring the highest total of 18 as the Allenton side were eventually rolled for just 81. With a play-off spot now out of the equation, the side can focus on building some form over the final two weeks of the normal season and then looking to prepare themselves for the T20 competition which will round out the season at the completion of the Tweedy Cup.
