Ashburton College principal Ross Preece: “It’s particularly important to learn locally because it allows parents to be involved in the upbringing of their children.’’
Preece advocates shopping local Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton College principal Ross Preece is delighted students are what he calls “shopping locally” and attending secondary school here. By shopping locally, he means learning locally instead of receiving their education outside the district. When students return to college on February 3, Preece estimates an increased roll of 1250,
up from 1225 at the start of 2021, with 200 Year 13 and 280 Year nine students expected. Staffing has also risen to 90, with five vacancies still to fill by the start of the first term. He’s lost five staff members, who’ve failed to meet the ministry’s vaccination mandate. “I’m looking forward to this year after having a disruptive 2021 due to Covid but, with the possibility of Omicron, we must be flexible,” he said. For example, the college’s leadership camp is going ahead in February involving 60 students, staff and facilitators, but could be curtailed if the Government’s traffic light system turns to red.

“We’re encouraging vaccination but don’t have the authority to ask students to disclose their status. “However, if they’re not vaccinated, they can’t compete in school sporting activities.” And Preece supports the Ashburton Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local campaign because he can see the synergy with local education. “It’s particularly important to learn locally because it allows parents to be involved in the upbringing of their children,” he said. “With the challenge of puberty during teenage years, it’s important they can parent their chil-
dren during that time. “There’s also a significant saving to parents in terms of cost.” With teenagers learning locally, the college could also offer a comprehensive range of subjects for purely academic students to those who are strongly vocational. “A bigger school allows us to offer a broader range of subjects and staff to teach them,” he said. “We also offer all manner of sporting and cultural activities and compete in the Christchurch competitions in rugby, netball, basketball, cricket and rowing.” Preece makes the point if people don’t support local retailers, then shops and businesses close.
“I could drive to Christchurch and purchase from a bigger version of Mitre 10 but it could hasten the day when the local branch closes,” he said. “If teenagers are sent to schools outside Mid Canterbury, it limits the ability of local schools to offer such a broad curriculum.” Preece also has another incentive for youngsters to attend Ashburton College. “In the years ahead, we’re excited about having a fit for purpose modern classroom space,” he said. “I’m confident we’ll have a new 32-classroom block in place for the start of the 2024 year.”

The right fit for Stacey
No time to waste for multitasking gym owner Daryl Holden You’ve got to be quick and organised to pin Stacey McKerchar down. Time is precious and limited for the super busy Ashburton businesswoman, Olympian, wife and mum. McKerchar, 37, is the owner-operator of the successful F45 Gym in Tancred Street, just a stone’s throw away from Cleavers Corner Gastro Pub. She brought the 45-minute high-intensity interval workout gym to Ashburton three years ago but she also works for the family firm, agribusiness powerhouse, Carrfields. If that wasn’t enough, McKerchar also has four kids to take care of – aged 7, 5, 3 and 20 months. “She’s busy,’’ McKerchar said, in her understated way. “Two are at school and two go to pre-school. “Between my husband (Charlie) and I, we manage it. “He has also got his own business.’’ Let’s call McKerchar versatile, which is particularly apt. She was like that in an illustrious hockey career, which saw the then Stacey Carr play 127 games for the New Zealand Black Sticks over eight years. She retired in 2011 after appearing in two Olympic Games and two Commonwealth Games for our high-profile women’s national hockey team. A cherished silver medal in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, in 2010 being the best result for an all-rounder, who was used as a defender, midfielder and striker. “Versatile,’’ a smiling McKerchar said, that word appearing again.
Cover story
Ashburton’s F45 gym owner-operator Stacey McKerchar: “We do have a very good business and community bond.” You could maybe throw in determined and tough, too. She showed that after rupturing an anterior cruciate knee ligament in 2007, building back up to full strength only to rupture it again in late 2009. So perhaps it’s no surprise that a former elite athlete and someone who knows what it is like to come back from two serious injuries, has turned to the health and fitness sector to make a living. Her F45 gym certainly seems to be thriving and there’s a lot to like about it. It’s clean, inviting and one of the biggest F45s in the country. McKerchar loves seeing what her fitness classes do for people, their health and lifestyles, espe-
cially those who naturally feel a little daunted and nervous at the beginning. “Even though you are in a room with 30 or so other people, you work at your own pace and your own ability,’’ she said. “You don’t notice what anyone else is doing and you get comfort out of that. When they leave, they may think, ‘well, actually, no-one was watching me’. That’s because you do just focus on yourself. “And it’s pretty cool just seeing people when they first start, and not being able to do a hell of a lot, but then give them eight weeks or so and they are moving quite well in here.’’ The gym game, of course, is tough, with numerous options
on offer for customers and it hasn’t been without major challenges in recent times. Covid-19 lockdowns since 2020 and alert level restrictions forced McKerchar to tweak her business and shut the doors temporarily until the pandemic pressure eased and improved. McKerchar and her team – she has 12 staff now – offered gym classes online. But now her clients are back onsite, pushing tin, throwing medicine balls, improving their cardio capacity in every way possible all in 45-minute time slots. McKerchar was indebted to those clients who have stuck by her business and new ones who continue to walk through the

door. She was also grateful for ongoing business and community support, the kind that the Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local campaign has promoted and encouraged in the past three months. “We do a lot with a lot of businesses,’’ she said. “For all of our (special eightweek fitness and weight loss) challenges, we have got about 15 local businesses from around town onboard and supporting it. “They donate prizes for the challenges, like vouchers, and in return we give it back to them in memberships and discounts. “We do have a very good business and community bond. It’s really quite good.’’

Ashburton part of meeting with minister ‘Our democracy has been removed’ Malcolm Hopwood
Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown is participating in a zoom meeting to determine the shape of a joint council submission to the Government’s proposed Three Waters model. The Ashburton District Council is a member of Communities 4 Local Democracy He hapori mo Manapori (C4LD), which is a local government action group representing more than a million New Zealanders. The 24 partner councils are shaping a submission to challenge the Government’s water reform plans, which takes responsibility away from local councils and gives it to four publicly-owned entities across New Zealand. A deputation of council members is meeting the Minister of Local Government, Nanaia Mahuta, later this month and Brown said the zoom meeting would discuss and approve the action group’s approach. “We’re developing options at the moment and want to confirm a proposal that suits us all,” he said. “The Government’s proposal doesn’t feel right. Our democracy has been removed by the minister.” Brown acknowledges there should be changes to the way the Three Waters (wastewater, stormwater and drinking water) plans are adminis-
tered. “But there must be local input in the scheme. “Instead, there’s a lot of governance from head office which we’re not happy with. “We want the minister to listen to our proposal and give it the credibility it deserves.” While he believes Mahuta won’t back down, they still have goals to achieve. “We want to get some tweaks from the meeting with her.” C4LD chairperson and Manawatu District Mayor, Helen Worboys, said the Government’s proposal falls well short on several fronts. “We’ll present them with straightforward and workable alternatives that deliver on all of their requirements, while preserving local res p o n s i ve n e s s and accountability,” she said. “We want to make a constructive contribution to the model that is finally adopted
by the Government.” Brown said the 24 members represented a minority number of the 67 local authorities but partner councils were keen to persuade others to join. “We don’t want a situation where councils such as Ashburton’s, that have upgraded their Three Waters, subsidise others that haven’t,” he said. Tough time for judges
Talk about a tough time narrowing it down to the finalists. That’s what the judges of the Zonta Ashburton Female Art Awards had to contend with when confirming those in the running for the event at the Ashburton Art Gallery for the sixth year. With 74 entries, judges have whittled it down to 37 finalists to be included in the awards exhibition. Of those, 24 have qualified for the premier award, with an additional 13 eligible for the young generation award for female artists between 16 and 20 years of age. The award winners would be announced at the exhibition opening on Friday, March 18, at 7pm at the Ashburton Art Gallery. Coinciding with the awards ceremony would be the opening of Pork Chop Express, a solo exhibition by Jacquelyn Greenbank, who won the 2021 Zonta premier award. A People’s Choice Award would also be open to visitors to vote for their favourite work throughout the duration of the exhibition. Zonta Ashburton Female Art Awards finalists for 2022 are: Bridgit Anderson, Audrey Baldwin, Amie Blackwell, Karen Boyce, Coral Broughton, Sarah Brown, Kara Burrowes, Kate Cairns, Robbi Carvalho, Sandrine Castel, Conor Clarke, Esther Deans, Edwards + Johann, Charrette van Eekelen, Karen Greenslade, Alice Jones, Vic Mangan, Jen McBride, Louise Palmer, Megan Prendergast, Rachel Sleigh, Rebecca Thomson, Akky van der Velde, and Jenny Wilson. Ski Awards – and they’ve done it for the seventh year in succession. The world awards conducted a virtual ceremony because of Covid-19 challenges and Mt Hutt’s win probably came as no surprise to those in the know.
The award is decided by customer votes over a three-month period and Mt Hutt’s success capped another super year, highlighted by the installation of a state-of-the-art new 8-seater express chairlift.

f you want to see Adolf Hitler’s 1939 Mercedes tour wagon close up, then the Ashburton Vintage Car Club Museum has taken possession. Sort of. Hitler’s staff vehicle is among a valuable collection of 1100 model cars and horse drawn vehicles from the 19th century to the year 2000 that have been donated to the Ashburton Vintage Car Club. Retired farmer, Ted Allen, one of the club’s oldest members, and his family own the collection but have donated it to the museum so the community can enjoy models of some of the world’s most famous cars. In addition to Hitler’s staff car, there’s a James Bond Aston Martin, Alain Prost’s Ferrari and the Queen’s coronation coach. Ashburton Vintage Car Club chairman, Peter Jacob, was thrilled by the donation of the collection. “It’s a privilege to be offered such a collection and now we have the opportunity to make it available to Mid Canterbury people. “It’s such a special collection

Prepare for covid in our community Building
activity still at high level
It’s only a matter of time before a positive case of covid is in our community, says the Ministry of Health. The health care system will be there for those who need help but most people who contract covid will not need to go to hospital and will be able to isolate safely at home.
Council issued 234 building consents for new homes in 2021, nearly 100 more than the previous year.
Everyone who tests positive for covid and their household needs to stay at home and avoid contact with others, according to the ministry's guidelines.
Walk in, Book My Vaccine online or phone 0800 282926
Being ready is about people, conversations, connections and knowing what to do. The Ministry of Health is also encouraging everyone aged 18 and over who has been fully vaccinated for at least four months to get a free booster now. Speeding up the booster rollout is one of several ways to protect yourself, your family and the community from Omicron.
community can help each other if needed.
To get your booster, you can visit a walk-in vaccination centre, or book online through Book My Vaccine or over the phone on 0800 282926.
Are there people in your household who need additional care or support?
This week has also seen the start of vaccinations for 5 to 11-year-olds. The covid vaccine used for these tamariki has a lower dose and a smaller volume than the adult vaccine and is administered using a smaller needle. To be fully immunised against Covid-19 a child needs to get two doses of the vaccine, usually given at least eight weeks apart. The child Pfizer vaccine is available at many walk-ins, community pharmacies and general practices. Being ready will mean your family and
Make a plan Identify people outside of your home who could help if your family is isolating, for example by dropping off food or supplies or for social support.
Work out how to let people know your household is isolating – put up a sign on your front door or fence. Think and talk about how you can reduce the chances of spreading covid across your household. Can you reduce shared spaces, or increase cleaning? Have what you need Make a list of family information – include everyone’s names, ages, national health index numbers, medical conditions and medication they normally take or medical supplies each person will need. Include emergency contact information, like your doctor’s clinic.
Prepare a wellness kit that could include masks, gloves, tissues, hand sanitiser, rubbish bags and cleaning products. Make sure you have things to deal with a sore throat, fever and aches – things like lozenges, vapour rub, paracetamol. Gather things you enjoy, and that might help stop boredom if you are isolating at home. Know and share your plan Make sure everyone in the house knows the plan and share it with wider family and neighbours. Stay connected, catch up with others online or by phone. Staying mentally well is also important so don’t be afraid to reach out. For support with anxiety, distress or mental wellbeing, you can call or text 1737 to talk with a trained counsellor for free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Check out more information and advice at www.covid19.govt.nz
The consents for new houses had an estimated cost of $101,257,697 – that compares to 138 new build consents worth $56,121,077 in 2020. In total, 722 building consents were issued in 2021 for a range of projects, including farm buildings, educational buildings, office and retail buildings and re-sited houses. The combined value was $223,569,575. In 2020, a total of 585 buildings consents were issued, for a combined value of $106,529,995. Strategy and Compliance Group Manager Jane Donaldson said the continued high level of building activity had translated into pressure on Council’s building team, who were doing their best to process consents and carry out building inspections within expected timeframes. “The trend nationwide is also for smaller houses, but we are seeing the opposite in the Ashburton district, with homes that are larger and more complex.” Advice for those applying for consents and wait times is being regularly updated on Council’s website. “We urge people to be patient, we are doing the best we can to process consents as quickly as possible and we will keep them informed,” she said.
Neil Brown, Mayor
Navigating Omicron and Three Waters It seems we are all on tenterhooks waiting for Omicron to explode around the country, and that can be an exhausting and frustrating state of play.
services and health people are not swamped.
One thing we can do to prepare is to make sure we get our vaccine booster and vaccinate our 5 to 11-year-olds. Already at least 95 per cent of our district is fully vaccinated, and these extra precautions are encouraged.
Another storm to be navigated is the Government’s proposed Three Waters reform model – the Ashburton District is part of a group of local authorities who have formed an action group to bring fresh ideas to the Three Waters debate. At last count, the group had 24 partner councils, representing more than a million New Zealanders.
We can also plan for what happens when covid inevitably comes to town – by having essentials on hand at home and knowing what to do and who to contact should you need help. Watching how Omicron has panned out in Australia has given us some clues about what to expect, and it’s not pretty. But it has also given us valuable time to plan and to ensure our health 1
Thursday, 20 January 2022 | ISSUE 62
Yes, uncertainty remains, but we are better placed than most to weather the Omicron storm.
We wanted to present constructive alternatives to the Government’s proposed model, which has four entities running the drinking water, wastewater and stormwater assets of 67 councils. We think Government's model is
overly complex and sets impossible objectives. It adds a complex management layer on top of what is already in place. Our action group has made a submission to Government about a straightforward and workable alternative that we think will get water safely into homes, businesses and everywhere else. Our ideas are not complicated, they’re just ways of improving on what has been done successfully for decades. While we have some challenges ahead in our own district, we are also confident we have historically made wise investments in the pipe networks that handle all our water and we have planned for both growth and maintenance over the next 30 years. We want to keep local infrastructure in
direct ownership of local communities and protect it against privatisation. Councillors will meet next week for the first time in 2022 when we begin looking at the budget for the 2022-23 financial year, which begins in June. The global covid pandemic will cast a long shadow on this work as we balance needs and wants against rates that are realistic. Our thoughts are also with the local Tongan community as they await news of family and friends impacted by the undersea volcanic eruption.

Grant rounds coming up; $245,000 to give Community groups and individuals are being encouraged to start thinking now about projects that could qualify for financial help from various funds administered by the Ashburton District Council, which has $245,000 to distribute.
UPCOMING MEETINGS Meetings are at Council Chambers, 137 Havelock Street, unless specified Draft Budget Workshop, Wednesday 26 January, 10.30am and Thursday 27 January, 9am (start time may be subject to change)
Funding applications open in February for nine different pools of money.
Methven Community Board meeting, Monday 31 January, 10.30am at Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, Methven
Applications will also be accepted during the month of March for a new walking and cycling trail maintenance fund, the Sport New Zealand rural travel fund, and the Creative Communities Scheme fund. Application forms will soon be on Council’s website and people will be able to submit applications online, within the advertised time frames. The first group of funds, which opens for applications on 1 February, is for: Community project – grants will assist projects that maintain and/or enhance residents’ quality of life in the district. Community events – grants will support new events and/or build capacity of existing events. Events must be smokefree, sun-smart and work towards zero waste. Biodiversity – grants are for projects that aim to protect, maintain or restore biodiversity. Heritage – grants are for buildings or items listed in the District Plan and funding must be used for specialised maintenance, such as replacing cladding or fittings that preserve or restore the heritage state of the building. Community development (infrastructure) - for the development or maintenance of memorial and community halls and reserve board infrastructure.
Ashburton District Road Safety Co-ordinating Committee meeting, Tuesday 1 February, 9.30am
Community development (agency) grant is for community organisations to contribute towards operational costs, including rent or salaries. Examples of agencies that have been successful in the past include support services for singleparent families, exercise classes for the elderly, training and support services including specific youth support and health services.
“We have $245,000 to give out in grants, and that’s money that could really boost some local projects, programmes and ideas.”
Community libraries – this grant supports the district’s independently operated community libraries that provide their residents with information, education, economic regeneration, culture, diversity and recreation.
The purpose of the Sport New Zealand rural travel fund is to help subsidise travel for junior sports teams taking part in sport competitions. Sports clubs and school teams with young people aged between 5 and 19 can apply.
School holiday programmes - in the past this has been used by groups such as Mid Canterbury Rural Women to provide healthy cooking classes to youth, and for activities such as kite-making and other art and craft projects for children at the South Rakaia settlement.
Individuals and groups can apply for Creative Communities Scheme funding towards their art projects. This includes projects that relate to craft or object art, literature, murals, visual arts, dance, music, film, theatre, Ngā toi Māori, and Pacific arts. The project can be in the form of an exhibition, performance, workshop or simply about creation.
Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said groups should be doing their homework now to see if any projects in the next six months might qualify for funding help.
Council has introduced a wheelie bin tag system that will alert residents when their recycling is not up to scratch.
Three more funds open for applications on 1 March. The new walking and cycling trail maintenance fund is to assist projects that maintain tracks in the district.

emptied during the next collection run. Mr McCann said wheelie bins had been audited ahead of collection for over a year now, to help lower contamination rates. Persistent offenders could have their recycling bins confiscated; with bins being returned after an education session.
The tags are attached to wheelie bin handles by the auditors checking bins ahead of kerbside collection. The tags indicate why bins have not been emptied.
The yellow recycling bin is for hard plastics 1, 2 and 5, as well as aluminium cans and metal tins, clean cardboard and newspapers. Plastics numbered 1 includes soft drink bottles, 2 includes milk bottles and 5 includes yoghurt and ice cream containers.
Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann said 46 bins were tagged on one collection day in Allenton recently, which is disappointing given the improvement in recycling behaviour last year.
“Common offending items in recycling bins include lids, tetra packs, and soft plastics.“ Residents whose bins have been tagged are requested to sort through their recycling, remove the unwanted items, and put it back out for collection again in two weeks.

Recycling can also be taken to any of the Council’s resource recovery parks if people still want to get rid of it before the next collection day.
Clean glass, such as clear and coloured glass bottles or jars go in the green crate.
Unwanted recycling can contaminate whole truck-loads and result in it being rejected by the facility that sorts Council's recycling. Rejected loads must be sent to landfill, creating more cost for ratepayers at an average of $2,000 per load.
Lids, of all shapes and sizes, unfortunately, cannot be recycled in yellow wheelie bins as part of the kerbside collection. However Council does provide a drop-off station at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park for plastic bottle tops (eg milk/soft drinks), bread bag-type tags, aluminium can tabs and metal wine bottle tops. These are sent to TidyKiwiNZ where they are recycled.
The tags can be removed and recycled once bins have been correctly sorted and
A battery drop-off station is also operating at the Ashburton facility for dead batteries.

Reach. It’s the key word for companies and businesses wanting to promote their services, make more money and engage with customers. And no-one has a greater reach and connection with online audiences in Ashburton than the Guardian.
The figures don’t lie. We are streets ahead of the opposition. That’s why you should be talking to us about using that reach, our superior content creation skills and our undeniable standing as Mid Canterbury’s only locally owned newspaper, and most well-read publication at that, to make your business hum even more.

Get your advice from an expert
R
ight, stick with me folks as I walk you through a simple life lesson that may help some of you navigate the Covid-19 vaccination debate. If I want my car fixed, I take it to a mechanic. If I want my house painted, I’ll call up a painter. If I want to waste money, I’ll book an appointment with my lawyer (just joking legal friends). And if I want medical advice, I’ll listen and talk to medical experts, like doctors perhaps. I must point out that does not include Doctor Google or Doctor S. Media. Seeking professional medical advice from those you respect and trust, especially when it comes to the pandemic, is important and sensible. Right now, it’s even more timely to consider doing just that with the childhood Covid-19 vaccine roll-out
Daryl Holden under way. Day one of the rollout was on Monday when more than 14,000 child doses were given to five to 11-year-olds throughout New Zealand. There’s an estimated 500,000 children in the age group, according to the Ministry of Health, and in the wider Canterbury area, clinics delivered a tick over 1000 doses of the paediatric vaccine. Mid Canterbury kids have also lined up to get their jabs to be immunised against the virus. Of course, children being able to get vaccinated for the pandemic
has caused predictable reaction from the anti-vaxxers, or those who are not necessarily opposed to other types of vaccines, but who seriously question the merit and even safety of the Covid-19 jab for our youngest. Some of the reaction has been hostile and downright nasty, especially on social media. Protesters in Auckland have also been reported as attending sites, shouting into megaphones and handing out pamphlets with warnings widely dismissed by the scientific community. So, what to do? Who to believe? Well, remembering what I said about listening to an expert, please step on up Starship Children’s Hospital paediatric consultant, Dr Jin Russell, who’s been involved in providing independent expert advice on
protecting children from Covid-19 to the Ministry of Health. Over to you, Doc ... “We now have real-world safety data from over 8 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered to children aged 5-11 years in the United States. I have confidence the Pfizer vaccine is very safe for children,” she has said. Very safe, she says. Very safe, people. This, from a highly respected paediatrician, who also didn’t skip mentioning possible side-effects by acknowledging that children “may have a sore arm, fever, headache or feel tired” after receiving the vaccine. “A key thing is to tell them why they are going to be vaccinated,’’ Dr Jin said. “I say to my boys, ‘you are going to be vaccinated to pro-
tect yourself against Covid-19, and to protect our family, your grandparents, our community, and other kids at school who may be more at risk from Covid-19 if they catch it’.” Dr Jin is most definitely not a Lone Ranger promoting the safety of the paediatric version of the Pfizer vaccine. Likewise, there will be doctors and their followers who will oppose it. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, regardless of what you think about her and the Government’s overall performance, has also urged parents to reach out to medical professionals they trust. And that is the key message. Go to experts you trust. Make your decision based on that and your own research. It’s what parents do every day. This is no different.

Got an event happening? Invite us along: editorial@theguardian.co.nz
With only a few weeks left of the school holidays, EA Networks and Southern Huskies NZ came to the rescue with the promise of cute dogs and fun activities and boy did they deliver. Maddison Gourlay headed along to see some of the action and pat a few Huskies.
Parent Ben Gilmour wasn’t not too far behind in the game, although I think half of his team are looking at the competition.
Harrison Green (left) Colleen Bolton, and Margo Green were excited to get their photo with Harry the Husky at the end of the Southern Huskies activity.
It was a close game of the parents putting on the clothes. Team one are desperate for team member Deborah Anderson to run back for the win.
There’s nothing like spending the school holidays doing activities with your best friend. Jade Robin (left) Indie Cavill can attest to that.
Jameson Harrison had his creative side out with some Arrie Burger and Mum Marlene Burger had a lot of fun being pulled of the Southern Huskies NZ activities of a model dog by two huskies around a small course. sled scene.
To finish off the session Leon Stephen and mum Hayley Penman were busy doing an Antarctic related crossword puzzle.
Rikki Kingsford was proud of her dog sledding model, as she should be.

interesting cards, and this deal is definitely one of them. Dealer, West passes, as do North and East, leaving South to decide how to open this 27-point hand. He knows he needs to be in a Heart contract, but 6 or 7? Depending on the partnership agreement, there are a number of options available, but whichever one is chosen, it must force North to make a reply. Of course, should 6 Hearts be the opening bid, which will be passed out, and North puts down the Diamond K plus other Diamonds, then the opportunity of a Grand Slam, 13 tricks, has been missed. So, declarer, South is playing in 6 Hearts, needing 12 tricks – what should West lead? The most neutral lead he can find is a Spade – it gives away nothing. A Club is also acceptable because declarer can pitch only 1 Diamond from dummy on that lead, and still has to take the Diamond finesse.
What West must do is lead away from his Diamond K, or he gifts South two Diamond tricks where there should be only one. Two rounds of Hearts from his hand, then declarer needs to cash the A and K or Clubs and ruff the Club 10 in dummy with the Heart 10. It cannot be over-ruffed by East even if he held only two Clubs! Now for the Diamond finesse, which as the cards lie, will lose to West’s K. Declarer ruffs whatever suit is returned, either over-ruffing East’s Heart 9, or drawing it out – whatever is required.
Ashburton Inner Wheel
Many members attended the International Inner Wheel day on 10th January 2022 with a delicious breakfast at the Hotel Ashburton. Many people may wonder why in the middle of the summer holidays in the southern hemisphere we celebrate this day.
At an inaugural meeting held on 15th November 1923 the wives of the Rotary Club of Manchester were encouraged to consider forming a club for all wives of Rotarians and by 10th January 1924 they had raised 11 Pounds Sterling as well as sending 80 woollen garments to St Mary’s Hospital in time for Christmas. The first President was Mrs Margarette Golding accompanied by Mrs Mabel Nixon Secretary/Treasurer with the name of the club to be “Inner Wheel” This is now a worldwide occasion. The first Inner Wheel Club in New Zealand was formed in Napier on 27th November 1936. In 2022 we commemorate 98 years of Inner Wheel. We are still strong and have an exciting and inspiring future ahead of us as we continue to strive to follow the three objects of Inner Wheel which are 1. True Friendship, 2. Personal Service and 3. International Understanding.

SHORT & SHARP
Gala Cup entry deadline looms
Winners found
The first round of winners for the week have been found at the Waireka Croquet Club. The club is hosting the Croquet New Zealand Golf Croquet National Championships all of this week with doubles action wrapping up on Tuesday. It took seven matches in total across the three days of play to find a winner, but the young Christchurch pairing of Levi Franks and Josh Winter emerged victorious beating fellow Cantab, Paul Kaiser who combined with Manawatu/ Whanganui’s Joel Steele to finish second. A plate event was also held with South Canterbury’s Jason Hodgett and Nelson’s Michael Lauer taking out the prize. Fourteen players kicked into gear yesterday for the singles into gear for the singles which run through until Saturday.
Codes combine
Tessa McCann will shoot for her seventh straight women’s Gala Cup singles title next week.
Matt Markham Mid Canterbury Tennis is gearing up for one of its biggest weekends of the year. This year’s Gala Cup will be held next week, beginning on Friday, January 20 and running through until Sunday, January 30 with a strong field of players in each category expected to take their place in the line-up. The premier and historic
championships of the Mid Canterbury court, the Gala Cup is one of the must compete events for all aspiring players in the region, with victory a feather in the cap of any player in any of the events. Manual entries for this year’s event close at 9am, Friday January 21 with online entries accepted up to 11.59pm on Sunday, January 23. The tournament is open to all affiliated players from A Grade and A Reserve tennis here in Mid Canterbury as well as non-affiliated players who compete in either Twilight Tennis or Sunset Doubles
during the week at the Tennis Centre. Competitions available across the A Grade and A Reserve divisions include singles and doubles for both men and women as well as mixed doubles in each category. One big question heading into this year’s event will be whether or not Rhys Cromie – who last year won his 10th Gala Cup singles title, will be able to defend his crown. The most decorated player in the history of the Gala Cup, Cromie will face off against a strong line up of players in the men’s A Grade singles event.
CYCLING
Simon in white hot form on the bike Simon White built on last week’s good ride to achieve the best possible outcome when he took victory in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Wylie Family, Shona McGrath Mystery Teams event raced over 45km around the Christies Road block on Sunday. White’s efforts saw him lift the Alan Wylie Memorial Cup. White found the front late in the race and was able to jump clear of his bunch to go to the line uncontested. Behind him a good battle was on to see who filled the final podium spots.
Ross Templeton had the best of the finish to take a second place, with first time starter Allan Broomhall producing a top effort to secure third place. Scratch marker Larry Neal claimed fastest time honours riding the course in 63.40. Co-markers Kyle Gray and Tony Ward recorded second and third times. The juniors and division 2 contested an 18km handicap event. First time starter Kaidyn Broomhall ensured the Broomhall family had a day to remember, riding a great race
to take the winner’s flag. Second placegetter Charlotte Neal equalled her father’s efforts by taking fastest time honours, riding the distance in 42.15. Thomas Stevenson dug deep to secure the final podium position. Division 2 saw a bunch finish, with Janette Hooper getting the nod on the line to take the win from Kerry Clough, and Brian Ellis. Roger Wilson secured time honours. Next week the club will travel to Methven to contest a 45km handicap event.

Also shooting for history will be Tessa McCann. The talented player, who is based in Christchurch, has won the past six editions of the women’s open singles – but needs to achieve three more to draw level with Heather Jamieson (nee Bruce) who won nine titles. Victory this year, however, would draw McCann level with the record for most consecutive titles if she can manage to win her seventh straight. The final line-up of entrants for the tournament and the all-important draw is expected to be released early next week.
The preseason slog is never much fun, but Mid Canterbury Netball are trying to make it so, and they are introducing another sport to their programmes to try and encourage more people to take part. The call has gone out to all netball and basketball players, umpires and referees to take part in their Get Fit bootcamps to help ensure they hit the court in good shape for the coming season. The bootcamp will consist of four weeks of one-hour sessions, starting on Thursday, February 3 through to Thursday, February 24 at the EA Networks Centre with sessions for the Year 7-9 juniors late in the afternoon and then one-and-a-half hour sessions for those Year 10 and older in the early evening. With limited spaces, MCN are calling for registrations through their website.
Currie tackles Tauranga Mid Canterbury born and raised athlete, Braden Currie will kick off his 2022 campaign with the Tauranga Half Ironman this weekend. Twice a winner of the event in 2016 and 2017 and a former race record holder, Currie heads into the event having not competed since finishing fifth in the Challenge Salou in Spain back in October. He will take his place on the starting line this weekend alongside defending champion, Kyle Smith. The pair finished first and second in the event last year and will be out to repeat the dose again in 2022 with Currie keen on turning the tables on one of his greatest rivals.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There’s no need to hurry. As counterintuitive as it may seem, you’ll get there sooner if you slow down. Fast action is unnecessary; it would likely produce timeconsuming mistakes. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Being fantastic at a job is one thing. People knowing you’re fantastic at it is different and important now. Think of this publicity as a job within your job, thus requiring its own skills and systems. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Happy days will return, but the happiness will be different, as happiness, just like fashion, is contextual – a reflection of the times, always updating, never the same twice. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): There are environments more and less conducive to your health, and you’re very good at projecting which way it will go for you. The trick is in taking that moment to reflect and make a conscious decision. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You don’t feel prepared to go to the next level, and yet the door opens and the brave thing to do is step through – no, jump through – before it slides back closed and the train takes off. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Today is a little like a field trip to a theme park in which everyone in the party is wearing the same shirt. You can tell who is in your group right away, and you’ll keep tabs accordingly. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Authenticity and transparency have been buzzwords for years now, but you’re starting to doubt anyone who uses them too much. It’s similar to how you’ve learned not to trust people who say, “Trust me.” SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Responsibility doesn’t burden you today. In fact, you have become so strong through your various roles that you hardly notice the weighty load you regularly carry. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You can feel free and simultaneously follow a schedule. In fact, if you didn’t schedule your free time, you’d either have far too much of it or none of it, both unfavourable and unliberated states. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’re so attractive when you’re doing your thing, and the deeper you get into it, the more attractive you become. You wear your passions like a well-styled, custom look. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Sometimes, people who think they are offering you their support actually seem to make things more difficult than when you were doing it all on your own. Watch out for that dynamic today. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You want to please others and ease their burdens. The best way to do this now is to please yourself. There will be some investigation involved in knowing your own preferences.
