SHOP smart SHOP loca Everything fine at The Fine Lion Maddison Gourlay Matt and Belinda Fine have made their restaurant and bar an epicentre of local produce. But a play on their name situation has landed them in a strange place with potential patrons. “We are casual relaxed dining, we often get told that people don’t come here because they think it’s a fine dining restaurant,” Belinda said. “The name comes from our last name, and the Lion was inspired by the Murney family crest. “There is no fancy dress code to dine here, we want to see families, we want to see everyone.” The Fines have been in the restaurant and bar business for over a decade now, co-owning Robbies in 2006, selling up in 2014. They then took over ownership of Kelly’s Irish Cafe and Bar five years ago but at the end of 2020, the right opportunity presented itself for the couple when the Murney building was erected. “We approached the Murneys as we could see potential in the space,” Matt said. They had been thinking of expanding Kelly’s, but due to logistics, at the time it was not an option. The new space in the Murney building seemed like a perfect fit for what they were wanting to do at Kelly’s, adapting to have the bar and restaurant. “We wanted to bring a bit of Christchurch to Ashburton,”
Matt said. Fine Lion opened in November 2020 and they sold Kelly’s at the end of 2021. The Ashburton Guardian shop local community boosting campaign to get Ashburton to love and shop local is a familiar concept to The Fine Lion, who source locally and take the phrase from paddock to plate seriously. “We try to get as much Mid Canterbury produce as we can, from our meat, quinoa, eggs, and alcohol,” Matt said. The Fines said that some days it feels like a country market. “Farmers are walking up those stairs, day in and day out, dropping products off,” Matt said. “Our egg supplier does take the elevator though. “It’s quite amazing what you can get in Mid Canterbury.” The Fines can look through their menu and point out what ingredients of a dish are locally sourced and exactly where they are from. The recent Ashburton CBD upgrade posed challenges for the local producers and their general suppliers bringing in stock, but they made it work. “There were no parks close by, which was frustrating as a lot of farmers would have to park down by the fire station and walk up,” Mark said. “We are glad that it’s over, and it does look great.” The Fines are thankful for the community’s support during the CBD upgrade and Covid lockdowns. “For us, the CBD upgrade hit us worse than Covid. “The community has supported us through our first year, and hopefully many more,” Matt said.

Providing power to the people Malcolm Hopwood
Four years ago, Pete and Emma Summerfield accepted the biggest challenge of their lives. Pete, a local electrician, had been investigating the opportunity to become a power retailer. It was confusing in a complex industry but he wanted to break down the barriers and offer Mid Canterbury people a local retailer. Pete and Emma had experienced automated phone bots who told them they were sixth in a queue and their wait was 15 minutes before they could talk to someone about their power usage. “We wanted to provide a service where a customer didn’t have to ring a call centre somewhere in the world and speak to an artificial voice,” Emma said. “Our goal was to establish a business where we answered the phone and people could come and see us.” Plains Power was established in 2018, it now has 550 consumers and is growing every month. “When we explored the situation, we discovered the big corporates that supply power are mostly based in the North Island. “There was no-one representing Mid Canterbury interests.” Today, they have a growing number of consumers that range from farmers to commercial and industrial users to private households. “We’re competitive and provide each with an individualised package that is specific to their requirements,” Emma said. The supply of power can be bewildering and to break it down she said “power comes from the national grid and we purchase what we need on behalf of our customers”.
Plains Power directors, Emma and Pete Summerfield have succeeded in their business through local support. In turn, EA Networks is a company that manages the power network, the infrastructure, and Plains Power is a retailer that sells it to clients.

Mid Canty crime in decline Reported crimes drop for second straight year Jonathan Leask The number of people who were victims of crime continues to decrease in the Ashburton District. According to police crime statistics, there was a 27 per cent reduction in crime in 2021. From January to December there were 614 crimes reported in the district, down 227 from 2020. The 2020 figure of 841 was a 15 per cent drop from the 992 in 2019, which in turn was a 16 per cent drop on 2018 (1187). Aoraki area commander, Inspector Dave Gaskin, is pleased to see that crime in the Ashburton District continues to fall. “This is largely down to the positive, proactive police work by local officers, all of whom live in our district and are valued members of our wonderful, close-knit community. “Given that crime has fallen in our district overall, police are more able to focus on prevention activities which limit crime happening in the first place. “This includes things like proactive patrols and being visible in our community.” The impacts of Covid-19 alert

level restrictions have certainly impacted crime figures across the country over the past couple of years, he said, and Ashburton is no different. In 2021 there were 258 burglaries in the district, but well down on the 357 in 2020 and thefts were also significantly lower with
287 reported, compared to 363 in the previous 12 months. The number of assaults halved, from 100 in 2020 to 54 last year, while there were eight sexual assaults. Gaskin said the reduction in assaults is consistent with the overall drop in crime during Covid
alert levels. “A number of licensed premises in the town limiting the hours they are serving alcohol has also likely contributed to this – we know that alcohol consumption has a direct correlation to instances of assault and disorder.” The only increase was one
more robbery, with seven reported last year. There were no abductions with two recorded in 2020. This year Gaskin said Ashburton police will continue to focus on bringing the crime rate down and “ensuring that our people are safe and feel safe”. “In order to do this, we rely on our community to play their part – we need people to report instances of crime and suspicious activity to us, so we can do something about it. “Every little piece of information helps us deploy to areas of demand. We will assess the information received and respond appropriately,” Gaskin said.

Life in red – events industry devastated again Red Light
Maddison Gourlay It’s business almost as usual for some, but the events industry are among those devastated by the change to the red light Covid-19 setting Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the change on Sunday after the nine Covid-19 cases in Nelson were confirmed as the Omicron variant. The announcement was a disappointing outcome for event businesses such as the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, which has moved around their show Jesus Christ Superstar once before. The original date for Jesus Christ Superstar was August 2021, but due to last year’s lockdown restrictions they rescheduled for March this year. Now with the Omicron outbreak in Auckland and Nelson regions, all of New Zealand has been moved to red on the traffic light system. “And just like that, the event industry is thrown in the air again.” Ashburton Trust Event Centre manager Roger Farr said. “With a reduction to 100 people under a red traffic light, and being a passport compliant venue, few events will proceed.” Farr could not comment on the fate of the Jesus Christ Superstar show yesterday as they were having a meeting last night to discuss their options.

Farr said that the announcement was not good news and disappointing and that they are not the only industry that will be feeling the blow of the new restrictions under the red traffic light. For the hospitality industry, the first day under the red light was optimistic for many business owners, as at this stage the doors haven’t shut.
“Not being totally closed down is a massive relief,” Speights Ale House and Noble 600 owner Tony Potts said. “Lunch [yesterday] was a bit slow, but we are looking hopeful for our evening bookings.” Potts said not much has changed under the red traffic light. Staff will still be wearing masks and keeping up hygiene
efforts, but the main difference is patrons will be a bit more spread out he said. “Talk to me at the end of the week, then we will see how exactly the red traffic light has affected us,” he said. “We expected it to go a bit quieter as people are always worried about change. “It is a wait-and-see situation,” Potts said.
Cafes and bars can operate with limits of up to 100 people based on 1-metre distancing, and only those with vaccine passes are able to visit. Hospitality businesses that choose not to check vaccination status will have to be contactless. Clubs and bars are similarly able to open but patrons must be seated and separated — no mixing, mingling and dancing allowed. Retail businesses remain open, but customers must be wearing face coverings, and shops can choose to require vaccine passes if they wish People must wear a face covering indoors, and outside when it’s difficult to keep your distance and are advised to take their vaccine pass, scan in or keep a record of everywhere you go. Anyone can travel around the country in the red setting for any reason.
Council going straight to the horse’s mouth Local sports clubs and recreation groups are being asked for input on the updating of the district’s Sport and Recreation Strategy Clubs and organisations are being asked to complete a short survey as the Ashburton District Council begins to work on a new strategy to help support wellbeing within the District. The previous Sport and Rec-
reation Strategy was adopted in 2010 and was primarily focused around the development of the EA Networks Centre. Council community services group manager, Steve Fabish, said that with the facility opening over six years ago, it was time to work with local groups on a fresh game plan. “These organisations play a vital role in supporting our com-
munity’s wellbeing through access to active recreation, so it’s essential that we gather their ideas on how the council can best provide support,” Fabish said. It’s hoped that the results of the survey will also help the Council understand the current issues that local clubs face. The survey questions cover topics such as the availability of
volunteers, ease of fundraising and the impacts of Covid. “We think these groups will also have a good grasp on the opportunities that might be available to us, so their input will be invaluable as we get the ball rolling on the refreshed strategy,” Fabish said. Residents will then have their chance to pitch in once the draft Sport and Recreation Strategy is
released for public feedback later this year, “In the meantime, if you play sport as part of a club or are connected with an organisation that provides active recreation, please check they’re aware of the survey and encourage them to take part.” Groups have until Friday, February 18 to complete the survey online.

Vaccination surge expected
Lions Market Day Ashburton Pakeke Lions have decided to postpone its Market Day and Charity Garage Sale set for this weekend because of the increase of Omicron in the community and all of New Zealand now being on Red. A Lions spokesman said the risks of Omicron increasing during the week and making the sale impossible meant they had to make a decision on Monday before any more setup work was done. “Even if the outbreak is still under control by next weekend the requirements at Red would have made the sale very challenging to manage,” he said. They intend to organise a replacement event later this year.
Lili Haydon Health officials are urging people to get their booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine as the Omicron variant is now circulating in the community. Demand for vaccinations is expected to ramp up this week as Omicron case numbers increase, with 25 new cases of Covid-19 in the community and the Omicron cluster growing to 19 yesterday. The increased demand was evident in Ashburton as Life Pharmacy’s Mia Christie described what was a crazy busy day for its vaccination facilities. She said they had a big increase in walk-ins, and when the doors opened there was a line of people waiting outside for their vaccinations. The line for the walk-in vaccinations didn’t stop there. People were still lining up mid-morning and throughout the afternoon. The pharmacy is currently unable to give under 12-yearolds vaccinations due to the small space they have which means they cannot meet requirements, Christie said. Eastfield Health business manager Tony Dann said there has been an increase in vaccinations in the past few weeks with the majority being chil-

dren under 12 and people getting their booster shots. Eastfield Health will continue their vaccination clinic at the former Noel Leeming Store on Tancred Street until demand slows down, Dann said, although he isn’t expecting that anytime soon. He said it was great to see people doing their bit and that
he expects an increase in the respiratory area at their doctors’ office due to an increase in Covid testing. Moore Street Medical Centre were also busy yesterday but for other reasons, practice manager Kanwal Shah said the team were flat out due to carrying out “a lot” of Covid tests. Shah was pleased with the
response from the Ashburton community. “Higher immunity means the community is safer. It’s not about the individual anymore,” Shah said. Boosters can be booked over the phone: 0800 28 29 26 and online through Book My Vaccine, or you can visit a walk-in vaccination centre.
The Red light has stopped the Ashburton Vintage Car Club rally. Members made the executive decision to cancel their upcoming rally which was scheduled for this weekend. Due to the uncertainty of how long New Zealand is going to be in Red, the decision was made not to reschedule. Ashburton Vintage Car Club secretary Colin Sweetman said: “Due to other events coming up and our last year’s spring rally being rescheduled to New Year’s Day this year, we felt the best decision was to cancel it for this year.”
Multi Cultural Bite The annual Multi Cultural Bite at Waitangi weekend has been cancelled due to the change to red in the Covid traffic light system. Due to the complexity of protocols and organisers making sure the public and staff are protected, led to the decision to cancel the event this year. The event was due to take place on February 5. Organisers hope it will go ahead next year.

Talks to boost farmer resilience Three of New Zealand’s foremost motivational speakers on resilience and mental wellbeing will offer tips for farmers and growers in a series of free online lunchtime talks. Isolation and the sometimes stressful nature of agriculture, with severe weather and volatile trading conditions out of their control, puts pressure on rural families. “The added restrictions, health risks and supply chain issues of Covid-19 have added another significant layer to that stress burden,” Federated Farmers’ employment spokesman Chris Lewis said. That’s why the federation, along with the Dairy Women’s Network and DairyNZ, were delighted when a bid for funding from Worksafe’s Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund was successful. The funding underpins the Federated Farmers speaker and Q&A series featuring Dr Lucy Hone (today), Dr Paul Wood (February 1) and Dr Tom Mulholland (February 8), and follow-up workshops hosted by the Dairy Women’s Network and DairyNZ. “It would be hard to find a more downto-earth, practical and inspiring line-up of speakers on the topic of handling adversity than these three,” Lewis said “They speak from the heart, from personal experience and from sound knowl-

Omicron is upon us; prepare David Clark
H
appy New Year to you all, or at least that is the intent of the wish! As we turn the page to 2022, we would all hope that we can screw up the last two pages that have been dominated with Covid-19. But not so it seems. At the time of writing, New Zealand is going to red in the traffic light system. Now what exactly red means and how red will slow the community spread of Omicron versus the orange setting, I’m not exactly sure. I guess in the next few weeks we will see if the whole thing is effective, or a nonsense dreamed up on the fly. Once again, we here in New Zealand have had the privilege of time to observe, given our 4000km moat. What will be laid bare over the next few weeks is whether the leadership of this country and of the pandemic response used that time to prepare, or whether they went to the beach for a spot of sunbathing. It is a very busy time on farms, particularly for the arable sector with the culmination of a year’s work and expenditure to be harvested over the next six weeks. On Friday afternoon, requirements for isolation were quietly introduced. Many folk do not yet fully understand the impact these restrictions will have at the time of local community transmission. My understanding is that if you are a close contact of a positive case, you will be required to isolate in your home for 10 days and return at least one negative test. If you test positive during this time, you will then be required to isolate in your home for 14 days minimum and return at least one clear test at the end. Your period of isolation will extend until your test is clear.
When you test positive for Omicron, your household and close community contacts begin their own 10-day isolation and the process rolls on. This could drag on for weeks for a family or a workplace. I understand that the bureaucracy of Government believe that the neighbours and support agencies will rock up to run your farm for you. That may be a stretch if a neighbourhood is widely impacted by Covid-19 infection. So, my clear message is spend some time planning a contingency if your family or business came in contact with a positive case or had a positive case within your tight circle. This is not intended to be scaremongering or over-stated. If Omicron behaves in New
Zealand like it has in New South Wales and Victoria, it will blow through whole communities and workplaces.
with the realities of rural New Zealand and farm responsibilities. My recommendation is to
clear message is spend some time “ My planning a contingency if your family or
business came in contact with a positive case or had a positive case within your tight circle.
Whilst I accept that Covid-19 is a serious health risk, albeit hopefully somewhat diminished with the Omicron variant, the sheer numbers of infections will potentially overwhelm our health system rapidly. However, I’m not convinced that the new rules for isolation are in touch
close your circle down very tightly now. Do not go out to social events, or other gatherings, limit the people coming onto farm and encourage your team to keep to themselves. Remember that one positive case interaction will tip your family life and business on its head for a month.
Give serious consideration to having a booster shot of the vaccine. Keep in touch with neighbours to see how they are going; this may be a very stressful time over the next few weeks. Do anything you can to protect your family and your business. Equally we need to hope that the same isolation disruption doesn’t occur in meat works, dairy factories or seed stores over the next few weeks. Hopefully after this we will be able to kick Covid-19 in the backside and put all this rubbish behind us. As for the planning versus sunbathing, I guess time will tell. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’d love not to think of yourself – to be unselfconsciously immersed in a state of flow as you execute the various activities of your day. Isn’t that what true confidence is? You’ll attain it for brief moments. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Even though it’s easier to think things through than it is to carry them out in practice, you’re in a mood to skip the plan and get right into action. It’s an instinct that won’t let you down. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You are thoughtful and will focus on what fits a situation instead of on all the things you could possibly bring to the table. This shift of focus is what sets you apart as a mature and effective leader. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It is good to feel the yearning. Otherwise, how would you know what you deeply want? But once you realise just what that is, you’d do well to shift to a more active method of making things happen. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): In critical moments, your private self and public self will be equal. You will make the same choice alone that you would make if millions of people were watching. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’ve done things for other people that you wouldn’t allow them to do for you. There’s an adjustment to make in this regard because relationships will thrive best on a two-way street. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Worry is a product of time travel. Jumping to the future prematurely causes worry and dwelling on the past does, too. In the operative moment – this one here – there is no room for worry, only action. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You’re getting so used to finding something to like in those lessthan-ideal situations that your thoughts automatically gravitate to the positive things, the advantages and your points of leverage. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The answers don’t always have to come from you. Try a proven strategy from a friend/mentor/book/ programme. You’ll find that you have a knack for duplicating success formulas. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Different brains have different styles of thought. Some have an audible running narrative and others just feel the impulse and move. You’ll enjoy working with those whose style is diverse from yours. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): The laws of leaning suggest that laying your weight into things that you have no control of puts you at risk for a fall. How can you emotionally, physically or financially prop yourself up better? PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): When you do what you enjoy, highlight the parts you love and revel in what you find exciting, you won’t have to wonder if the others are digging it, too. They will follow your lead.

ike the unwanted party guest you knew was going to turn up anyway, Omicron is here. It is as expected, as by all accounts it’s a highly infectious strain so it was inevitable it would breach the border somehow. It has, it’s here, and life goes on under a red light. The change in alert level is not a lockdown, it appears to be more of a tightening of restrictions. I remember Aucklanders celebrating the move from the old alert level system to a red light as a freedom day. Fast forward a few weeks and as Omicron starts to spread, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern put the country in the red and you would think it was a return to lockdowns. But try telling that to the few who still haven’t learned you don’t need to hoard toilet paper. It still puzzles me why toilet paper is the go to option for panic buyers.
Jonathan Leask Bread and milk, other such staples I can understand, but you can’t eat toilet paper, and the virus doesn’t have symptoms that require a year’s worth of toilet paper use in a few weeks. Unless there is some medicinal quality or special recipe requiring that much toilet paper, I remain – two years on – at a loss to why people raid the toilet paper. The change to red light is an inconvenience sure, and people have a right to feel anxious, but a bit of perspective, nay retrospective is required. The shelves got a bit barren at times, caused by panic buyers, but supermarkets didn’t run dry in the two actu-
al lockdowns, they won’t this time. Then there is the border. Those with pre-existing MIQ slots are still free to return home, under restrictions, but the hundreds of Kiwis still overseas are locked out indefinitely. Even if they are tested and proven Covid free, they can’t return to an MIQ slot as they are all on hold. However, if you contract Covid in the community you can just isolate at home. There appears to be some disparity. How long do we lock New Zealanders out as a precaution of avoiding Omicron coming in when it’s already here? Some would argue they left at their own risk or ask why has it taken them this long to want to come home but as citizens, they are within their rights to come, and go, as they please – as long as they follow adequate border controls.

Eastfield Health Walk-in Covid Vaccination Clinics at the former Noel Leeming shop, opposite Briscoes Phill’s find in the weekend, a jasper agate.
Poor service, an agate find and some facts
I
t’s time for my annual bitch about service in town, let’s get it out of the way nice and early in the year! The last two weeks I have popped into a local business that shall remain anonymous. At the counter the following happened. Shop Assistant: “Hello, how are you doing today?” Me: “I’m all good today, how are you doing?” SA: “I’m okay, would you like a bag for these items?” Me: “No thanks, I’ll save a dolphin.” SA: Blank stare, probably thinking, that’s not funny you dork. After an awkward couple of seconds. SA: “Would you like your receipt?” Me: “Yes please.” SA: Handing me the receipt, “there you go.” Me: “Thanks” and I walk out of the store. WHERE IS MY THANK YOU? I have just forked out some of my hard-earned folding stuff to you. I know you don’t own the store, but that money goes to the person who does and they pay your wages, so you should be thankful. I’m not having a go at the Shop Assistant, more at the person responsible for training them. Although one would have thought that manners is something taught at home. It may not be the most glamorous role in the world, but why not do it to the best of your ability, it doesn’t hurt to be polite and it doesn’t cost you anything, but it may just impress the right person at the right time, who has a better job offer for you.
On a different note I have had a bit of feedback on last week’s column and getting shown up by my daughter when it comes to finding agates at Rangi. I would like it noted that I found a “Yeah that’s pretty good” (direct quote from the Agate Master) jasper agate in

OFF THE AIR the weekend. Much to my surprise the Agate Master does not wish to take a slice for his collection so I will be getting one face of it polished up and leaving the rock as a whole for my growing collection.
And finally Some things I’ve learnt in the last week. ~ Filthy air kills 3.3 million people a year. (And that’s not even counting the poor souls who are unfortunate enough to wander by this studio the day after curry night …) ~ South Carolina once named a road after singer Darius Rucker from Hootie & the Blowfish. (The strip of road starts off in a vaguely rocky area, and then goes straight into the country, then back to more rock …) ~ Colorado scientists say their research suggests snake venom could cure cancer. (Well, there’s some science not to be hissed at ...) ~ Did you Know: 4.8 billion people own mobile phones, whereas only 4.2 billion own a toothbrush. (I’m smelling a new invention: The iBrush! Who’s on board?) Till next week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper Agate Finder Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. Shift to red setting has huge impact on Methven meeting Matt Markham A season of torment for the Methven Trotting Club has taken another turn this week. Sunday’s announcement of a move for New Zealand into the red setting under the traffic light framework has cost the club one of its biggest days of the year – the Clubs of New Zealand Race Day. The meeting, set to be held this Sunday at the Mt Harding Racecourse, will still go ahead under the settings, but with some heavy restrictions in place which limits what the club can do in terms of hosting people on course for the meeting. As part of the Clubs Day, more than 600 people were set to be on course for a private function from various workingmen’s clubs and the like from around the Canterbury region. But Harness Racing New Zealand’s rules around the red setting mean that pods of up to 100 people are allowed in various areas on the course, but must be kept separate and have their own hospitality services. Those pods also can’t mix with others.
The news has also brought about the demise of another special aspect of the day with Maurice McKendry, Tony Herlihy and Ricky May all set to compete at the meeting as the three members of the New Zealand 3000win club. A decision was made on Sunday to cancel plans for the three drivers to be there with McKendry and Herlihy having to travel from the North Island to compete. It follows on from a horror first half of the season for the club which was forced to move two of its meetings away from their home venue in September and October after high winds shifted a huge amount of soil and debris onto the grass track, rendering it unusable. The Methven Cup meeting in October was held at Orari behind closed doors due to the government alert levels at the time, as was their September meeting which was held at Ashburton. Despite the interruptions off the track, the day is still set to see some quality harness racing action with big fields expected and the second instalment of the Little Green Jug – a $20,000 race for three-year-olds. Fields for the meeting are expected to be released tomorrow afternoon.
The three wise men, Maurice McKendry (left), Tony Herlihy and Ricky May were set to drive at Methven this weekend as part of a special series, but it has had to be cancelled with the move to the red traffic light setting. PHOTO SUPPLIED

Currie conquers the Mount
Omicron’s arrival throws season plans up in the air Matt Markham Victory is always sweet, but winning the Tauranga Half Ironman at the weekend meant a little more than usual for champion Ironman athlete, Braden Currie. And as he stood on the podium in Tauranga, celebrating his success, the former Mid Cantabrian who is now based in Wanaka, soaked up every facet of winning on home soil. Because for this year, at least, it will more than likely be his last. Speaking after his success and prior to the government’s shift on Sunday to the red traffic light setting, Currie said that during the middle of last week it became apparent that the weekend’s race might be his first and only in New Zealand for 2022. “This race meant a lot, New Zealand is my favourite place to race and it my be the last time I stand on the start-line here for a while,” he said. “Once Omicron is in the community – many events will need to cancel, so I wanted to make the most of today and really enjoy it.” Currie had intended to race in the NZ Ironman Championships in Taupo in a few months, but the weekend’s developments will most likely cause a rethink and a replan with the Ironman World Championship in Utah later on the year one of three main races in the pipeline for the former Mount Hutt College student. He also hopes to return to the Collins Cup after winning his race in the inaugural edition of the competition last year and then it’s onto the Ironman World Championships at Kona, in Hawaii later in the year. But, the weekend, was all about the then and not so much the now, with Currie clearly in a good headspace and fantastic physical condition as he smashed the clock and the Tauranga course. First out of the water, Currie stalked the speed on the bike leg
Braden Currie emerges from the swim leg in first place at the Tauranga Half Marathon at the weekend. and then turned to his trusted run to get him over the line first, claiming his third success in the race – five years after his second with wins in 2016 and 2017. “It was a good day – I don’t feel as tired as I normally would. I had a great swim – it’s not often I get away from those guys in the swim, so it was nice to get clear which meant I could do my own
thing for the first hour at least until Mike Phillips caught me on the bike. “I knew Mike would ride well, but I knew as long as I stuck with him, I was confident my run would take me where I wanted to be. “It’s a good start to the season and I really appreciate everyone’s support – it was awesome out
there.” Established in 1990, the Tauranga half marathon has been part of the Mount Manganui summer ever since and it is one of New Zealand’s long-running and most popular triathlon events. As well as winning, Currie was also crowned 2022 Long Distance Triathlon Champion. But he wasn’t the only family

member to stand on the podium during the day. His son, Tarn, made his debut at the Mount in the 10 to 19-yearold 5km run where he finished third. “He’s determined, but I’m trying to tell him to do something more exciting, like mountain biking, but he’s a pretty talented runner, so who knows.”
COAST TO COAST
Two-day event cancelled due to red light setting
The two-day events in this year’s Coast to Coast have been cancelled following the move to the red traffic light settings at the weekend. It is hoped the one-day events will still be able to be run.
Athletes competing in the twoday events aligned with the annual Coast to Coast received the news they were dreading yesterday morning with that aspect of the event cancelled for 2022. The management team behind the hugely successful event which traverses through the Southern Alps from Kumara Beach to New Brighton informed athletes with an entry to any of the two-day competitions that they had made the tough call to scrap them from the event following a shift to the red traffic light setting on Sunday. “Unfortunately, it is with real disappointment that we have to announce that it is not possible
to host these events under the traffic light red guidelines,” they said. “Therefore, we have been forced to cancel the 2 Day event.” After working through the latest information and the Government’s Covid-19 protection framework with the latest information available, the Coast to Coast team however do see potential for the one-day events which includes the elite longest day competition, to be run. “From the information we have currently there is some potential for us to operate these events on Saturday, February 12 utilising a pod and wave situation.
“However, we need further time to explore the feasibility from both an operation and safety perspective.” If successful in their bid to host the one-day event, the annual Mountain Run, which is usually held on the Friday would be shifted to the Saturday as well, although more information is being sought in regards to that as well. As it stands the hope is that the longest day, longest day age groups, 1-day three person teams and mountain run events may still be held. But the 2-Day individual, the two and three person relay teams and tandem teams events are gone for this year.

Stags topple the previously undefeated Pleasant Point Short scoreboards
Matt Markham Consider the statement of intent to have been officially issued. Saturday’s penultimate round of South Canterbury Cricket’s Tweedy Cup was a big one for Ashburton based side, the Tech Stags. Up against the unbeaten defending champions, Pleasant Point and needing to find some momentum heading into the business end of the season, a victory wasn’t just required, it was demanded by the team’s leadership group. Two frustrating losses to the competition’s high-flyers had highlighted that a complete performance would go close to securing success, Tech needed to put it all out in the middle – and on Saturday they did as they toppled Pleasant Point by a commanding 125 runs. And in doing say they not only confirmed that the competition isn’t the lay down misère it might have seemed but also created that little element of doubt in the back in the minds of the Point team with a preliminary final between the pair already locked and loaded for Saturday, February 5. The winner of that match will receive a pass straight through to the grand final while the loser will take on the winner of the other semi-final match in the major semi. So, there was plenty achieved from Saturday’s win by the Tech lads. Surprisingly, at the weekend, Pleasant Point – who had beat-
Tech Stags 285/8 (Sam Clark 60, Jason Morrison 44, Harry Jones 32, Des Kruger 31, Ryan Bell 30) Pleasant Point 158/10 (Bevan Ravenscroft 4-14, Richard Print 3-29, Ryan Bell 2-14) Allenton 69 (Karmjeet Singh 17) Star 70/4 (Kulvinder Kirk 2-23, Hasdeep Singh 1-15, Ravinder Singh 1-6)
Richard Print (bowling) proved a pivotal cog in the success of the Tech Stags at the weekend. en the Stags during the season by batting first and then rolling them with the ball – won the toss and elected to take to the field first on the Technical wicket. Jason Morrison (44) and Sam Clark (60) set about their work with freedom and worked through the first 10 overs at a decent rate before Morrison fell with 81 runs on the board. Clark went six overs later, but another 40 runs had been added in that time and at 120-2 after 18 overs, Tech were in a good place. Strong contributions throughout the winnings from Ryan Bell (3), Des Kruger (31), Matt Tait (29) and Harry Jones (32) kept
the runs ticking over nicely and at the completion of their 50 overs, Tech had secured a more than competitive 283 for eight. One of Tech’s greatest strengths this season has been its opening bowlers. They’ve frequently put pressure on batting line-ups early and claimed wickets to put their side in a good position. On Saturday it wasn’t the case. With a total to chase in front of them, Pleasant Point set out at a frenetic pace and took to the Tech bowlers early. At the start of the eighth over, they’d scored 90 runs and yet another match looked destined to slip from Tech’s grasp.

Ryan Bell was brought into the attack early though and almost instantly made a difference. He removed the powerful Will Harvey and soon after had the even more dangerous Adam Beck back in the sheds too. When the third wicket fell the match still sat on tenterhooks at 126-3 after just 17 overs, Pleasant Point still looked well on track. The wheels fell off though. Richard Print and Bevan Ravenscroft bowled in tandem and tore through the middle order to leave their rivals reeling, they went from 126-3 to all out for 158 in the space of 11 overs as Tech claimed success.
Daily Diary
For the second week in a row, Ravenscroft was the key figure in the bowling line-up. He took 4-14 from his 6.2 overs in a masterful display of bowling while Print ended up with 3-29 from his 6 overs. Tech get a chance to further build on their momentum this week when they take on Celtic in the last round of the normal season. Meanwhile, Allenton’s horror run with the bat continued on Saturday. Batting first against Star, they were rolled for a paltry 69 – their third straight under 100 run innings. Karmjeet Singh’s 17 was the only score in double figures outside of the extras which accounted for 15. In reply. Star overcame a shaky start to run down the total comfortably and win by six wickets.
