Methven balloon pilot seriously injured Graeme Church

Malcolm Hopwood It’s been an awful start to 2022 for hot air balloon pilot Graeme Church.

On Christmas Eve he got engaged to Methven local, Michaele Hofler, and on Saturday morning, January 1, the balloon he was piloting was involved in an accident near Lauriston.

Church, the owner and chief pilot of Methven-based Adventure Balloons New Zealand, was thrown from the balloon’s basket. He was caught in a rope and dragged in a rough landing and is now in Christchurch Hospital

being treated for what have been reported as serious injuries.

It was also reported that eight people were reportedly on board at the time of the accident, but the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) was not aware of further injuries.

Wreckage from the hot air balloon accident has been removed from the scene, but TAIC has continued its appeal to witnesses, who may have seen the balloon in flight or the landing itself.

TAIC is asking people who saw or videoed the flight to contact it at: www.taic.org.nz/contact-us.

TAIC chief investigator of accidents, Harald Hendel, confirmed the serious nature of the accident.

“The balloon pilot was ejected

from the basket during the rough landing, caught in a rope and dragged some way before the balloon came to rest and the basket tipped over.”

The commission’s investigators have largely completed their examination of the accident scene and removed the balloon envelope, basket and other wreckage to a secure site for further examination.

They conducted initial interviews with the occupants and the balloon ground support team on Sunday and hoped to complete all interviews and collect key documents from the operator by last night.

the cause of the accident but the broad circumstances of how it occurred.”

Investigations could take 18 months to two years because components of the balloon were manufactured in several countries. The information would be analysed, with a draft report completed before the end of the year and the final report due in 2023, Pleasants said.

Adventure Balloons New Zealand offers scenic flights across the Canterbury Plains, as well as private charter flights. Theirs was not the first hot air balloon accident in New Zealand in recent times. In July last year, 11 people were injured – two seriously – in a crash near Arrowtown.

Just 2100km in 21 days Closing in on world record length of NZ run Cover story

Daryl Holden Emma Timmis didn’t even have time to stop for a chat. Fair enough, I suppose.

After all, it was just after 8am when she came through Ashburton yesterday and the 37-yearold running machine and artist from Kaiapoi was locked into a world record-chasing deadline.

There was no time to spare because she needed to arrive at a certain signpost at the very bottom of the South Island in just a few days.

That’s in Bluff, of course, where State Highway 1 ends with the much-photographed Stirling Point signpost. Timmis wants to reach that, and get her photo taken no doubt, by Friday.

Do that and she would have set a new Guinness World Record for running the 2100km length of New Zealand in just 21 days – obliterating the record of 35 days set by Welsh runner Menna Evans in 2020. It would be a mind-boggling feat, which started in Cape Reinga on December 18 and has seen Timmis run about 100km over 12 to 16 hours every day.

Guinness World Record conditions meant she was allowed to cross the islands by ferry in what has been inspirational if perhaps a touch concerning effort to watch close-up for partner and main support person, Tristan Phipps.

“Some days she is tired,’’ Phipps said.

“But some days she is not.

“It was very hot and hilly at the top of the North Island and hot again through Canterbury.

Incredible just doesn’t seem to cut it as an adjective. It’s simply superhuman for a woman, who was motivated by something very personal.

It wasn’t that long ago that Timmis battled depression and severe mental challenges for about three years after an undiagnosed leg injury threatened to end her running passion.

But a year ago, and almost miraculously, she was given the OK to get back to her endurance running dream. Suddenly plans three years in the making to run the length of New Zealand were back on track.

Remembering those lows, and a desire to help others, has seen her run also become a mental health fundraiser. Timmis hoped to raise $21,000 each for Youth-

Before that, she became the first woman to run the 2400km Freedom Trail across South Africa in 2011.

“But this is more than just running,’’ Phipps said.

“This is about people in communities helping each other out.

“Along the way, we have had a lot of cool people do cool stuff for us to help get us where we have got to today.

“There are nice people out there. We need to remember that.

Those nice people included physios they’ve called on to tend to Timmis on the side of the road or in the campervan at night where she slept before starting all over again at five or earlier each morning.

“She went through a struggle herself with depression so that is why she is raising the money,’’ Phipps said.

“She knows what it’s personally like to struggle and how you need people to help you.

“That’s why this means a lot.’’

And if anyone was ever going to do it then it was certainly Timmis, because it’s not the first time the Derby-born athlete has challenged herself physically.

In 2015, she and a friend roller-skated across the Netherlands.

A year earlier, to raise money for the RSPCA in the United Kingdom, she ran across Africa — the 3974km distance equivalent to 94 marathons — in just 89 days.

That resulted in her writing her first kids’ book, The Girl Who Ran Across Africa, detailing her ad-

cling in different towns to offer encouragement like Emma Roche, from Leeston, did yesterday through Ashburton.

“But I’m not running the whole way,’’ she joked.

And Phipps, especially, would never forget those nice folk at Taupo Hospital. They patched him up, and performed x-rays, after he was accidentally knocked off the support bike on Christmas Day by a passing motorist.

He suffered severe bruising but escaped serious injury and broken bones when a car’s wing mirror caught his arm and sent him flying, nearly ending the run and the dream then and there.

It cost them half a day in time but, really, it just provided more motivation for the pair, especially Timmis, who has had to abide by Guinness World Record rules for her challenge to be official. Those rules included providing witness statements while on the road, wearing a trackable GPS watch, filling in a logbook and completing a 10-minute daily video to authenticate her record attempt.

The timing of her run also meant that they couldn’t enjoy Christmas or any of the usual festive celebrations.

But perhaps some delayed festive celebrations could take part in Bluff at the weekend when she arrives to smash the record and achieve her mental health fundraising mission.

“Oh, we’re not sure yet,’’ Phipps said.

“We’re just keen to get there.

“She’s just said, ‘I just want to get to Bluff’.’’

Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum visitor engagement co-ordinator, Martine Tait, admires the Under the Big Top exhibition.

Under the Big Top, but in miniature Malcolm Hopwood Circuses can’t get much smaller than the exhibition at Ashburton Museum.

As part of the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum’s summer holiday programme, there’s an historic photo exhibition entitled Under the Big Top. It’s where local

photographers over the past 100 years have recorded visits by travelling circuses to Ashburton.

Alongside the photos, are miniatures of circus activities for kids to enjoy, all crafted by Ashburton’s Rex Hockings.

Later in the month, Christchurch Circus holds a skills workshop on Tuesday, January 25 at EA Networks and a make a circus ride toy at Ashburton Museum on Thursday, January 27.

The museum is also hosting a Christmas crafts and magic crafts programme until January 15 and

February 13 respectively, and the Great Santa Hunt, where 30 Santa are partly hidden around the museum.

But the major attraction at the art gallery is two workshops based on books and images from Ashburton children’s author and illustrator, David Elliot, on January 25.

Elliot has received many awards for books and illustrations and has collaborated with authors Margaret Mahy, Janet Frame, Joy Cowley and Jack Lasenby.

To prepare for the workshops, images from his books festoon

the gallery’s Narrative Nook and children are invited to create their own illustration from the quotes on the walls alongside the images.

David will judge them and award a $25 Warehouse voucher to the winners of each age category.

They’re also asked to create a story from a famous illustration from his award-winning book The Moon and Farmer McPhee.

Winners in each category will also receive a $25 voucher from Paper Plus.

“David is very important to Ashburton people and his characters are known to many local children who read his books,” Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum visitor engagement co-ordinator, Martine Tait, said.

“David is also a great supporter of the gallery and a valuable contributor to our art collection.”

Luxon’s inspiring email message was then interrupted by a phone call from his real estate agent. He confirmed that Luxon’s bid to buy his eighth house was successful.

“This will show my followers that life is about having more than you actually need,’’ Luxon continued with his resolution.

“There is no one more in tune with struggling Kiwis than I am.’’

Sweating PR The Royal Family’s public relations team woke up on New Year’s Day and made a resolution: “We’ll issue a press release today that will once and for all

clear Prince Andrew of the horrid accusations of sexual abuse of a minor made against him more than 20 years ago.

“We’ve already explained that not only does the duke suffer from a peculiar medical condition that means he doesn’t sweat – so it can’t have been the prince who acted inappropriately because the blonde accuser recalled him ‘profusely sweating’.

“Now we’ll send out a new release that’ll explain that the duke, as everyone in the party scene remembers, was never into teenage blondes. Redheads and brunettes maybe but never blondes.’’

The PR team then finished their media release and sent it off, sweating on its success, even if Prince Andrew couldn’t.

Try-hard Patel Black Caps’ history-making spin bowler Ajaz Patel woke up on New Year’s Day and made a resolution: “I will keep working hard and do whatever it takes to improve my game to play more cricket

When burn-offs go wrong

That was the toll from rural fires in New Zealand 2016-2020 for FMG. Bear in mind that FMG has around 52 per cent of the rural market, and also, as the company’s head of client strategy and advice services Stephen Cantwell pointed out, that was only what could be claimed on.

“There’s a lot more out there as well in terms of damage to land and the risk to human health and lives.”

When farmers do a controlled burn-off, or weigh up risks when they use a chainsaw or other machinery that can cause a spark in the height of summer, they need to realise it isn’t just their own property at risk. Damage done to neighbouring properties and equipment can very quickly add up, Cantwell pointed out.

These liability claims comprised 52 per cent of the cost of

rural claims between 2016 and 2020, with building claims making up 27 per cent and contents 15 per cent.

FMG paid out $1.7 million on 120 liability fire claims in rural areas in the four year period, at an average of $14,000 a claim. One

incident alone cost $250,000.

“When you look around, it’s not hard to see some really significant things that could burn if a fire got out of control … .maybe a big forestry block next door, a new lifestyle subdivision with million dollar houses that weren’t

there in years past.”

News to no-one was that there was a definite ‘seasonality’ to rural fires, and we’re on the cusp of the machinery and hay barn fire risk period now. Some two-thirds of agriculture-related fires occur January-March.

FENZ and FMG statistics machinery use is high on the list for starting blazes in summer, whether that’s from exhaust sparks or metal implements striking rocks.

Bird nests in the exhaust of tractors and harvesters or under the cowling/bonnet are always a big risk.

“We see it with utes and quads as well,” Cantwell said. The ‘stop and pop’ [the hood] message remains as strong and relevant as ever.

FENZ recognises controlled burn-offs as an essential and useful land management tool. But there is plenty that needs to be done to reduce risks.

First port of call should be the checkitsalright.nz website to find

out whether a restricted or prohibited fire season has been declared in your district.

The website www.fireweather. niwa.co.nz has in-depth and localised weather information.

Pre-planning can head off a lot of trouble, as can having extinguishers and other dousing equipment close to where you’re working. FENZ fire officers are always happy to offer advice for anyone who feels they lack the experience or knowledge to tackle burning a wind row or stubble.

Fire danger is generally lower in the morning. In daylight saving time it’s often around noon1pm that wind patterns change and pick up.

Another thing when you’re doing a burn is to identify those areas that could be most at risk from an outbreak. In other words the pinch areas, the places and situations that are difficult to manage.

They’re the areas you want to start from, rather than let the flames build up in intensity before they hit those pinch areas.

Does improved water quality increase milk production?

A recent trial did not confirm anecdotal evidence that cows will produce more milk when they drink high-quality town supply water, writes Tony Benny for Our Land and Water National Science Challenge.

When LIC national FarmWise manager Edward Hardie heard about a Northland farmer who reported he’d increased milk production simply by upgrading his stock water, he was interested and believed it would be worth doing a scientific trial to test the concept.

“They filtered the water and used some chlorine tablets to get rid of the pathogens, and they understood they had an increase in production as a result,” Hardie said.

He researched the scientific literature, and although there were some indications that better quality water would increase production with meat breeds, there was little research to indicate the same was true for milk production.

With support from the Our Land and Water Rural Professional Fund, he set up a trial on DairyNZ’s Lye research farm in Hamilton, with research support from AgResearch, led by Karin Schutz.

The aim of the project was to investigate if providing chlorinated town supply water would improve the milk yield of cows, compared to drinking unfiltered bore water that contained high concentrations of iron and manganese.

Four groups of cows (50 cows/

group), managed on pasture, were offered either town supply water or unfiltered bore water for two weeks, before changing the water treatment for another two weeks in a cross-over design.

Two water treatments The water from the research farm’s bore is discoloured and, to human beings at least, is far less attractive than the sparkling clean town supply.

“We thought, physically, this is fantastic, you can see the difference here,” Hardie said.

“The bore water was high in iron and manganese and you could smell it, it was pretty strong. I wouldn’t be keen on the bore water, it can taste a bit irony, whereas the town water is clear and looks and tastes good.”

Milk production for each cow was recorded daily and milk composition was analysed at the start and end of each treatment period.

At the end of the four-week

trial, there was virtually no difference in milk production between cows drinking bore water or clean town supply water (see graph below left).

A small preference study undertaken after the four-week initial trial, where two groups of 20 cows were offered both water sources simultaneously, showed they preferred the unfiltered water over the town supply.

It is thought that the cows’ familiarity with drinking the unfiltered bore water influenced the results, as this was the main source of drinking water on the farm.

It is also possible that the cows’ perceptions of palatability differed between the two water sources.

The town supply was chlorinated, so they may have found this taste or smell aversive compared to the bore water to which they were accustomed.

Hardie said it was known that cows will refuse to drink water

dosed with zinc to prevent eczema unless it’s added gradually over time to get them used to it.

Studies have also shown that cows are extremely sensitive to manure contamination in their drinking water and can detect and avoid concentrations as low as 0.005 per cent.

Next steps Although the trial results didn’t show that milk production would increase if cows drink better quality water, Hardie believed it would be worth doing another trial – this time finding a way to overcome their distaste for the chlorinated town supply water.

A different experimental design could be to get the cows accustomed to the town water before the trial or, alternatively, to use non-chlorinated filtered water.

“We had considered just using filtered water in setting up the trial, but the cost was too much,” Hardie said.

Hospital escape already planned

By Michael Guerin Two broken bones in her lower leg don’t seem to have reduced champion jockey Danielle Johnson’s energy levels much.

The premiership winner was already planning her escape from Auckland Hospital just hours after suffering the injuries in a shocking home-stretch fall at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Johnson was dislodged from hot favourite Gold Watch in the closing stages of the Rich Hill Mile, with her actual fall looking no worse than many other raciang incidents but the shock value coming in the loss soon after of Gold Watch.

But the angle Johnson landed on at speed saw her suffer two breaks in her right lower leg.

She was taken by ambulance to Auckland Hospital where her leg was placed in a cast until she could be examined by a bone specialist late on Saturday night, and she had surgery on Sunday morning.

“We think she has had a rod inserted in the bone and maybe even a plate, but we will know a lot more when she comes out of recovery,” said Johnson’s mother Annabelle from the hospital.

“So it looks like she will be in here for a few more days, which she won’t like.

“She rang her father Peter at 9.30pm on Saturday night and was trying to tell him she would be going home that night.

“And then today she was trying to tell Jamie (Richards, Danielle’s partner) and me she would only be in for one more day.

“So not much has changed with her apart from her having a broken leg.”

Johnson is no stranger to the danger of race riding, having spent months on the sideline after a much worse fall at Ruakaka on November 2018.

That left her with three fractures in her collarbone but she fought back to win the national jockey’s premiership last season by a remarkable 60 victories, riding 151 winners for the season.

She was a close third on the premiership before Saturday’s accident, which brings into question whether she will ride here again before a proposed move to Hong Kong with Richards over the winter.

Stipendiary stewards found no jockey was at fault in the incident, as while Gold Watch had come together with a rival at the 250m mark that is not deemed to have been a factor in his breaking down. Danielle Johnson takes a serious tumble during the Rich Hill Mile on Saturday.

Sporting year in review – The ABC of it all Matt Markham

As the curtain on 2021 starts to fall we take a look back through the months of sporting achievements, results and stories that shaped the year that was with an ABC of Mid Canterbury sport for the year.

History will show that winning the Combined Country Rugby competition is no mean feat. Very few Mid Canterbury sides have achieved it.

There’s been many finals, but few great successes to talk about when taking on the neighbours from the other side of the Rakaia River and further yonder towards the north.

Southern’s achievement this year to obtain the most sought-after piece of silverware in country rugby, was nothing short of remarkable.

They were, in every sense of the term, a traditional country rugby side. Some remarkable untapped talents mixed together with the traditional grafters – the guys who have been there for years and just show up each week and get the job done.

They faced many a good side, winning against almost all of them, and went into the final at Hinds against competition heavyweights, Southbridge, perhaps as underdogs.

But it didn’t matter. They did what they’d done all season and lifted when the moment called for it.

They played great, controlled rugby and were able to lift the trophy at the end of the match as 22-18 winners, writing their name in a storied history book of teams to have won the competition.

arget shooting

If there’s one thing in Mid Canterbury sport that is a given, it’s that we are right on target.

The region has become a breeding ground for talent with a gun in the hand, producing national champions, representatives and major competition winners all around the country and Australasia.

And 2021 was no different.

Our shooting fraternity, across all facets of gun sports were again outstanding in their fields.

We’ve got many of the best in the country walking among us, and there’s some

really exciting things on the horizon.

Our own golden girl, Shania Harrison-Lee has had an interrupted season with injury, but her results when she was on the range were to the highest of standards and a New Zealand call-up for the big time appears to be just lurking around the corner.

With real passion and drive to see their sport succeed, the hours put in to developing and nurturing newcomers is one of the major reasons behind all the success and with that continued focus, there’s a lot more to come in the future too.

U

ltimate uppercut

Each year at the annual Mid Canterbury Sports Awards, a local sporting legend is honoured with the Robilliard Trophy acknowledging the indelible mark they have left on sport in the district.

It’s a much-discussed piece of silverware, reserved for the great servants of sport. In 2021, the trophy was given to boxing legend, Les Leath for his decades of service to sport in the ring.

A competitive boxer in his early days, he hung up his boxing gloves at the age of 22, with a record that at the time was all but unparalleled and saw him ranked as one of the best – if not the best – in New Zealand.

He gave up competitive boxing to focus on his young family, but continued to be involved for many years to come in the sport as a coach, committee man, volunteer and jack-of-all-trades.

One of the true heart and souls of the boxing world within our boundaries, Les Leath, was the perfect recipient for such a time-honoured award.

2022’s sporting winners and losers From the Fifa World Cup to the fate of the Warriors, Chris Rattue predicts the sporting outcomes for the next 12 months.

Eddie Jones will talk up a storm England may not be New Zealand’s greatest rugby rivals, but they are the most bitter ones. Kiwi fans just hate losing to England.

All rugby roads lead to Twickenham this year, with the All Blacks set to play England for the first time since their coach Jones masterminded the incredible 2019 World Cup semi-final demolition job.

At this point, I’m picking an England victory.

Neither team will unveil all their tricks a year out from the World Cup, but that won’t stop the manipulative Jones trying to get in the All Blacks’ heads.

Remember that stupid spying claim trick he pulled at the World Cup.

The Birmingham Commonwealth Games will be a fizzer Yes, we’ll all talk it up with lots of patriotic chest-beating.

And the old guard, who hold the sports funding purse strings, keep the thing trundling along.

But the Commonwealth Games is a tired old warhorse which just doesn’t cut the mustard any more because a lot of the competition is second rate.

And why exactly are we celebrating the colonialist Commonwealth?

It’s time to pour our energy and money into something far more relevant, like rapidly rising basketball.

Which would be great for tennis, after the mental health issues which played out quite publicly as the 2021 season progressed.

Osaka is an interesting character, who seems to be one of those sports people never too far away from a headline.

A new era of women’s tennis is bubbling away, with other plot lines in the offing.

They include the potential rise – or maybe struggles – of shock teenage US Open winner Emma Raducanu, and the possibility of Serena Williams equalling Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles victories.

Lydia Ko will mount a challenge to Nelly Korda Korda is golf’s great new superstar, revealing an unflappable nature in her rise to the top of golf’s rankings.

But world number three Ko has slowly pieced a new A-game together – it shapes as a pivotal year for the Kiwi if she is to make a claim for the top spot again.

It’s hard to see Korda – a golf veteran at the age of 23 – relinquishing the number one ranking just yet, although Korea’s Jinyong Ko is snapping at her heels.

Watching how far Ko’s second wind will take her is sure to be a fascinating part of the 2022 sports scene.

Much loved Brazil make the FIFA World Cup final, but …

It’s a long way out to make predictions in a such a packed field, but we’ll have a go.

Crowd favourites Brazil can base their campaign around some fine central defenders, and it gives them a great chance of winning the trophy for a sixth time, and first in 20 years.

If France find their spirit they will be dangerous, but there are hints that they aren’t handling the champions tag brilliantly.

Germany, with new life in the post-Joachim Löw era, are my early hunch to win the final over Brazil.

They will be ultra-de-

Even Formula One is fast-tracking towards using sustainable fuel.

Devon Conway to shine New Zealand needs a big new cricket batting star, with Ross Taylor’s career on the wane.

The flamboyant Conway has the goods and some ideal early opportunities with high profile tests against South Africa and England, and ODIs against the Aussies.

It is Conway’s time, and he has already started the year against Bangladesh in the glamour number three batting position due to Kane Williamson’s injury, producing a fine century.

A tough home ODI World Cup for the White Ferns New Zealand won the tournament it hosted in 2000, so you could say the form book is very good.

But the current predictions aren’t so promising.

The arrival of Argentinian loose forward Pablo Matero is a crucial factor.

Moana Pasifika to face tough times I fear for the new Super Rugby team, with a thrown-together squad and new coaching combo leaping into a pool full of well-established opponents.

More a lament than a prediction…

Rather than having bold hopes any more, it’s time for their fans to good-naturedly embrace the club for being what it is.

Put it this way: When an old New York Jets football fan passed away last year, his family placed an obituary suggesting he had taken his last breath rather than watch another Jets game. That’s the sort of humour I’m talking about.

FARRELL Karin Joanne – Passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021, at Terrace View, Ashburton, after a wonderful Christmas Day spent at home with her sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. Aged 68 years. Loved mother and mother-in-law, and Granny/Gran of Sam, Sarah, Fletcher, Georgie, and Matt, Anya, Mason, and Hadlee.
