‘It just feels nice’ Smart moves pay off for mobile device expert Daryl Holden Jaswinder Singh loves his job and feels right at home in Ashburton. Singh has been in Ashburton only four weeks, having moved up the road from Oamaru where for nine months he worked for a Smart Mobile device repair and accessories shop in the penguin-popular township. Singh now looks after all the IT and repair work for the company’s two stores in Ashburton, the original one in East Street and the newer shop in Burnett Street by Somerset House. Already, he and his Indian partner feel right at home. The community-boosting shop and love local campaign is one that sits easily with them. “It just feels nicer,’’ he said. “It’s a good community and good chances to meet and know each other. “The people from New Zealand are very good people. “It is just like our own country. We really like it here.’’ Well, Ashburton is probably not like India, or even his home province of Punjab in the northern part of the country, but you understand what Singh is saying. He and his partner, also originally from Punjab, feel comfortable and happy in Ashburton, as they did in Oamaru. They’re two small regional South Island towns but with a real community feel where even the weather meets his approval.
“I have some family members living in Canada, but I don’t like the weather in Canada,’’ he said. “It’s too harsh in the winter there. “So I choose New Zealand to make my home.’’ He’s been in New Zealand four years, having spent most of that time in Christchurch. He enjoys working for the Smart Mobile business, which is ever growing with 16 shops nationwide. They deal with all types of mobile phone, laptop, computer, iPad devices and the like, offering top notch repair work and the latest accessories. “We do all kind of repairs at this store,’’ he said. “It’s quite a big job and quite a lot of responsibility “You can get a lot of damage to devices and those devices are very important to people. They are working devices for their business.’’ And it’s repair or screen replacement work that’s their most common job from customers. On average, they repair or change about three broken phone screens every day. “Some are new but most of them are old phones.’’ Outside of keeping our phones going and screens protected, Singh, like many Indians, enjoys his cricket. “I love cricket, but I haven’t had a chance to play it here. “I’m quite busy in my work.’’ But who does he support? India or the Black Caps now that he’s an adopted Kiwi? He laughs, then plays a politically correct straight bat reply. “For now, the Black Caps. “But it’s only a game. “We always support all sports teams.’’
Right – Jaswinder Singh: “It’s a good community and good chances to meet and know each other.’’

Putting their best foot forward Frontrunner’s people-first approach pays off Left – Frontrunner Ashburton co-owner Donna Mealings: “I definitely like to help people and retail gives you that chance.’’
Daryl Holden It doesn’t take long for Donna Mealings to explain what the Frontrunner Ashburton store really means to her and husband Stephen. “It’s our baby.’’ In many ways it is, with the couple having introduced the Frontrunner sports footwear, clothing and accessories franchise to Ashburton in 2005. Back then, the original store was located on East Street where the Somerset House building now sits. It eventually outgrew those premises, resulting in a shift across town to what was a newly built retail complex on Moore Street. That’s where it remains as a thriving family business headed by innovative owners, who thought they could make a go of it all those years ago. “We owned Caltex Service Station at the time and were both right into running, and Stephen was very involved in triathlons,’’ said Mealings, who also has a long association as a Mid Canterbury hockey coach. “But there was just nothing here in Ashburton when it came to footwear and getting that right sports shoe. “We thought that could do really well in Ashburton.’’ And it has done well, with the addition of the Frontrunner sports massage business next door a clever development. “It’s good because it drives customers through the store,’’ Mealings said. “Their customers become our customers and vice versa.’’ The key word there is customers. Dealing with people and pro-
viding them with a quality service is Mealings’ sweet spot. It’s why she would rather be on the shop front floor, leaving hubby Stephen to take care of the administration management side of the business. It’s a successful double act. “I definitely like to help peo-
ple and retail gives you that chance to be helpful and to care about what you do. To me, that’s really important. “A lot of great careers start at coalface services like retail. I look at what (young) staff we have had come through the business and I just know that
we have helped set them up with life skills and communication skills that are so important, whether they go on to be a doctor or lawyer. “If you have developed life skills from retail, and can talk to people, then you are going to go along way.
“You can’t learn that out of a book.’’ And perhaps that empathy for people and her clients is why the Mealings have such a loyal customer base. That loyalty’s been obvious many times, but especially through the challenges of Covid-19 restrictions, especially the initial two-month national lockdown sprung on the country in late March 2020. “It was such a shock but when we came back (and people could shop again) it felt like we had big Christmas spending weeks for weeks and weeks,’’ she said. “It was just crazy. It was quite humbling to think that you had that so much loyal support behind a wee business like ours.’’ And that is why Mealings thought the Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign was a real winner. It was a must for the community, which perhaps sometimes needed reminding of what a unique blend of small and big businesses they have to choose from and all owned, managed and staffed by locals. “It is just reminding people that we are here and what we do because a lot of the retailers in town have been doing it for an awful long time,’’ she said. “An important part of where we live is that we are also very agriculturally based in Mid Canterbury. That’s our backbone. “If you look at it, most families in our district are only once removed from someone who works in that industry. That’s what makes our wee town thrive. I am very thankful for that.’’

‘Arty farty’ courses feature at Methven Summer School
Susie Millichamp is teaching brush mileage at the Methven Summer School. Susie tutors Watercolour Wellness as part of the “arty farty” course, and emphasises that, if students want to have a career in art, they must put in the hours. Her two-day programme teaches the art of water colour landscapes from people’s own imagination. They can bring their own photographic images, or be inspired by examples of Millichamp’s work. “It lifts me up to teach and share the joy of painting,” she said. She hopes, at the end of two days, students will improve their skills, believe in themselves and feel well about what they’re doing. Susie and her husband, John, from Staveley, are opening a shop called Art and Baskets, in Methven next month, to sell their goods and provide a studio where people can practise watercolour painting and basket making.

Millichamp is one of 25 tutors who’ll teach a range of subjects in the five-day school, which started yesterday at Mount Hutt College and ends on Sunday. Summer School President Sandy Redmond said 121 students are attending, a drop from previous years, but the courses have had to abide by restrictions imposed by Covid-19. “We’re fortunate to run at all, with some students and tutors dropping out because of passport requirements,” she said. Students are attending from Wellington to Dunedin, with most coming from Mid Canterbury. Courses on upholstery, collage, photography, basket weaving, watercolour, artisan breadmaking and photography were scheduled for the first day. Breadmaking, improving your golf swing and five separate art courses have traditionally been the most popular Redmond said. Ashburton art tutor, Jenny Thompson, told her class “there’s no right or wrong in collage making. It’s all in the eye of the creator”, while Judith Sommerville hoped her students would walk away with baskets made from cabbage tree leaves.

J
oy and Murray Hydes have often relied on each other to overcome life’s challenges. The 2021 late May floods, which battered the Canterbury region and still leaves the Ashburton Forks couple in temporary accommodation, is just another major hurdle the pair are slowly prevailing over. Together. They acknowledge their lifelong union and a “resilient, pioneering spirit” have been key along the journey. But extensive community
support has not been taken for granted as they recall how they tackled the “terrifying” flood waters, which bore down on them back in May last year, forcing them to evacuate from their beloved home. “It’s been very stressful,” Murray said. “We really needed to let people know that we really appreciated the help we had.” Heavy rain was forecast the weekend of May 29-30 but even for the couple, who have “seen it
all” as far as Mid Canterbury weather goes, the speed of which the situation escalated caught them by surprise. “We’ve seen some things – snow, rain, hail, drought, the full nine yards – through our life,” Joy said. “It was just one of the biggies, like the 1945 snowstorm.” Situated near Digbys Bridge in Greenstreet, silty floodwaters enveloped their five-hectare property on May 30. “Our wet and bedraggled neighbour came over and said, ‘the
water is coming’,” Joy said. The pair began to dig trenches out the back of their section, unbeknownst that water was rapidly approaching from the front. “It came up to the verandah and then it started seeping into the house,” Joy said. “It was very frightening, but I thought to myself ‘we can survive upstairs’.” Making things even more awkward, the pair were both not at their agile best. Joy was recovering from a
hip replacement, while Murray shifted stock and pumped water on a dodgy knee, which has only recently been reconstructed. “The water was like glue (due to the silt),” Murray said. “Out the back of the house, it was up to my knees and you couldn’t see through it.” Battling the elements on the ground, Murray took the first of two tumbles when his shoe got stuck in some weed mat, which had got tangled, landing face first in the water.

He later took another fall on his side against a concrete pad near his shed, his brother-in-law on hand to rescue him out of the raging waters. “I was stuck,” Murray said. “It just showed how quickly these situations could arise.” Suddenly a bit of rain was turning into a critical situation for the couple. A local fire volunteer arrived at their home to help before he quickly realised the pair needed to evacuate promptly. “He came to the window and asked how many sandbags we needed and I said: ‘it’s a bit late for that’,” Murray recalls, with a chuckle. Joy said they just rung 111 and as the surging water bled into the bottom floor of their home, she was forced to turn the electricity off to their home as water levels climbed towards the power points.
“By then, the bottom floor was floating,” she said. Quigley Contracting staff then arrived at the property with two tractors in tow, which had been situated at the nearby bridge site. Murray recalls the impact of the tractor tyres through deep floodwater caused a swell against his shed. “It bent the doors and I was like ‘holy hell’,” he said. “It was really like standing in the middle of a raging riverbed by the time we evacuated,” Joy said. Four of their cats were left to fend for themselves on the top floor amid the chaos as their owners were suddenly hauled on to the tractors around 5pm that day. “We had to leave the house, in the dark, with four terrified cats upstairs, we couldn’t take them anywhere,” Joy said. The felines were uninjured and retrieved the next morning before
being taken to a local cattery. They have since joined the Hydes at their temporary home. Bounded by the north and south branches of the Ashburton River, the Greenstreet area copped a hiding during the floods. “There’s a lot more people who were way worse than us,” Murray said. Joy and Murray were fortunate enough to know a family friend, who had an empty property about six kilometres north of Ashburton. “We were so lucky to get the space there,” Joy said. Murray recalls the event with a hint of humour, which both he and Joy later suggest is important in navigating what they describe as a “big long nightmare”. The floods were only the latest event for the couple, who have not had it easy. Joy and Murray tragically lost their 21-year-old daughter in 1994
in a car crash. Murray, himself, was later involved in a vehicle accident, the trauma of the incident leading him into a dark depression he thought he would never come out of. “After you’ve been through those things, another blow knocks you around a bit,” Joy said. To their credit, the pair have brushed themselves off and soldiered on. And they put it down to a few key ingredients. “We’ve worked together,” Joy said. “We are [a team].” Murray adds having a sense of humour and determination had steeled them for everything that has been thrown at them. “The attitude that ‘this is not going to beat me’.” During the immediate clean-up, a simple gesture like a hug from
one of the neighbours also seemed to make the world of difference. “I was helping the builders clean out the shed and was water blasting and a lady, my neighbour, grabbed me from behind and gave me a big hug. “She said: ‘I just came over to give you a hug to help you get through the day’.” After several months of acclimatising to their new abode and slowly restoring their existing one, after the bottom floor received about $150,000 worth of damage, the Hydes are eager to return home early in the New Year, positivity and perspective still intact. “There’s so many weird emotions we’ve gone through,” Joy said. “But I still feel like we’ve still got a fair bit of pioneering spirit left in us.” “Life is a challenge and it would be boring if it wasn’t.”

OUR VIEW
Kaipara hoping others will follow
P
erhaps it’s a sign of our growing maturity as a nation and greater acceptance of all things Maori. Perhaps it’s also because we’re so accustomed to seeing tattoos of all shapes and sizes and on all body parts. Whatever it is, no-one here seemed to blink an eyelid or make any racially implied fuss on social media or elsewhere when Oriini Kaipara read the primetime news on Newshub over the festive break. For those that prefer 1 News, and thus missed the Newshub moment, Kaipara became our first newsreader with a face tattoo to anchor a prime time 6pm bulletin. Now she hopes other Maori women follow in her footsteps – and so do I. Kaipara, who has had her
Daryl Holden traditional lower chin tattoo for nearly three years, has been filling in on Newshub at 6pm and the importance and significance of becoming the first wahine with a moko kauae to present prime time news was not lost on the Auckland mother of four. It even attracted global headlines. “‘It’s breaking new ground for us as Maori, but also for people of colour,’’ said Kaipara, who grew up speaking te reo and is fully bilingual. Hear, hear to that. Not surprisingly, Kaipara is committed to
the revitalisation of te reo and Maori customs. As is now the norm for all of our prime time newsreaders, Kaipara uses bilingual place names, like Tamaki Makaurau for Auckland and Te Waipounamu for the South Island, and subtly integrates Maori into everyday sentences or repeats the phrase in English so that no one is left confused. So, whether she wanted it or not, Kaipara is a trailblazer. No matter how temporary her existing gig is, she could be the first of what may well be a long line of Maori newsreading women on TV with traditional family heritage tattoos. But the past two weeks were not completely new territory. Kaipara made headlines in 2019 when she also became the first person with face tatts to
present mainstream news when filling in for TZNZ’s midday broadcast. Interestingly, that followed a culturally ground-breaking decision by Air New Zealand a few months earlier when they reversed their policy previously disallowing employees from showing their te moko while at work. All of those changes are further signals as to just how far society has come in terms of accepting expressions of culture and the normalising of te reo. Not everyone is a fan of that change, especially among the oldest sector, and that view has to be respected, but it isn’t going away anywhere soon. If anything, it will continue to become more prominent in our private and business lives. One thing we should never lose sight of though is that people in all
jobs, and not just on television, should still be judged on their ability and not their looks or culture. Kaipara would know that better than most. To some, she may appear to be something of a novelty, but those that have really listened to her read the news and who have enjoyed her pitch-perfect pronunciation of Maori words, and her general all-round delivery, will know that she is certainly not a lightweight. She has presence. She has talent. She has substance. And her achievement, and acceptance of it, shows how far we’ve come as a nation because it’s signified a very real accomplishment on behalf of her culture. It is a moment we should all acknowledge and feel good about.

Sporting year in review – The ABC of it all Matt Markham
V
ictory No.10
They say that to win a Gala Cup singles title it takes something special. Well, how about Rhys Cromie? Back in March he not only won the coveted Mid Canterbury men’s singles title, but did it for the tenth title making him the most successful player in the history of the event. It’s a remarkable feat. Cromie’s 10 wins have come within 16 years of the first.
As the curtain on 2021 starts to fall we take a look back through the months of sporting achievements, results and stories that shaped the year that was with an ABC of Mid Canterbury sport for the year. And while he might have started as the rising young talent when he claimed his first, in more recent times he’s had to stave off the challenge of the younger brigade who have arrived on the scene much in the same way he did. All counted, Cromie now has 19 Gala Cup titles, his singles victories joined by a solitary mixed doubles win and eight victories in the men’s doubles. A great ambassador for the sport of tennis in Mid Canterbury and a wonderful role model for the next generation of players, Cromie is far from finished either. He’s still got that desire to succeed which will see him a permanent fixture on the courts for many years to come and who knows, another Gala Cup singles title or two may still be in the reckoning.

The Lake Hood Waterski Club has again enjoyed a successful 12 months on the water, despite many of their major events falling to the wayside thanks to the Covid-19 situation across New Zealand and further afield. But that hasn’t stopped the results from flowing in. A really strong nationals for the club highlighted the year but one major development has been the rise and rise of the younger stock of skiers from within the club to compliment the existing champions already walking among them. Names like Quinn and Jet Hansen, Emily Milner, Cameron Hill, Katrina and Genevieve Wallis are all names for the future, and for some already they find themselves up in shining lights with the likes of Hugh and George Donaldson.
Special mention too for Gavin Green, who not long after setting a new New Zealand record claimed the Men’s Over 65 champion status at the nationals to cap off an incredible week. With a number of young skiers already named in national teams for 2022 and the promise of more and more success coming, it’s already exciting to think about what might be able to be achieved by the club during this year.

avier Bartlett
Remember him? That youngster from Allenton who carved up the entire Methven Senior B defensive line in the final of the Second Grade Cup back in July, scoring 25 points? What a talent. A gifted first-five, Bartlett ran the cutter for the Allenton side with aplomb all season, looking like a player who would slot straight into any of the district’s senior teams without too much problem. Just pure born natural talent. Then, just for good measure – the following week he stepped out onto the court in the Mid Canterbury Basketball Men’s A Grade final and put on a masterclass as well, scoring points and controlling the match for his Wildlife side as they tore down competition favourites, Checkers, in the grand final to register an impressive win. Mid Canterbury is full of sporting all-rounders, but there’s few as naturally gifted at whatever sport they choose to put their mind too compared to Bartlett, and it will be interesting, after an impressive 2021 on the sporting field, just what he can do in 2022. We can’t wait to find out.
Left – Rhys Cromie is the undisputed Gala Cup champion. Right – Xavier Bartlett had a sporting year to remember. Below – The Lake Hood watersking fraternity are an extremely talented bunch.

Shooters chase national glory Matt Markham A host of Ashburton-based shooters will feature in selected South Island teams at the National Championships in Trentham, which begin tomorrow. A nine-strong group from the Ashburton District Rifle Club will head to Wellington to be a part of the weeklong championships, which include
the historic and much-famed Ballinger Belt, which is the oldest sporting trophy competed for in New Zealand. While individual and team glory will be high on the agenda for the local contingent, some will also be representing the mainland in the annual North Island versus South Island grudge match on Monday, as part of the week’s events. In the traditional prone classification, Martin Fleming and Commonwealth Games competitor, John Snowden, both feature, with Snowden
also listed as the team’s coach for the event. In the F-Class classification, Coby Snowden, Mike Chui, Murray Cook, David Smith and Brian Graystone will represent the South Island. Joining the group on the trip up north to compete in other events across the week from the Ashburton District Rifle Club are John Fleming and Gareth Miller. The official championships begin today, with competition every day right through until next Saturday.

■■ Golf
Happy 2022 to all. We were not really sure if doing organised golf on New Year’s Day would take off but with it being a Property Brokers qualifier, we should not have worried. A big field turned up to try and secure a place in the final shootout. Scoring has not been great recently what with the punishing rough and slick greens but that was turned on its head on Saturday. Kevin Smith won the day with a superb 43 points, just pipping Dave Robertson on 42. Chris Lovelock came in third with 40 points and if you didn’t manage to shoot your handicap for 36 points then no prizes for you. After 3 qualifying rounds the scores on the board are a lot lower than previous years. Kev Smith and the ever-present Bev Chinn sit top on 74 points with Chris Lovelock and Leaky Lambert just behind on 73. At the moment 65 points gets you into the top 19, obviously that will go up but it does show that with two qualifying rounds to go anyone can make a late charge to get themselves in the big race and pick up a 2022 club sub, thanks to Hamish and Karen and the great gang at Property Brokers. Round 4 this Saturday pop along and give it a go. In other news the Harvey Norman Classic entries are now open. This is on 12th and 13th of February and after seeing the “full” signs go up last year you will need to get in quick this year. To make sure that you don’t miss out get a form from the club or off the website, fill it in and get it back to the club with full payment. We can only guarantee entry to the first 100 fully paid pairs. Don’t miss out. Good golfing.

Ashburton MSA Bowling Club
After a long time on the sidelines the Ashburton MSA Bowling Club were able to get back on home territory last week for the first time this season. The club officially kicked off proceedings on their home turf with a Tuesday afternoon roll up this week where 19 club members turned out to enjoy the day.
Sandra Keith has added another national title to her already glowing lawn bowls record. The Allenton Bowling Club product yesterday won the coveted national women’s pairs title at the famed Burnside Bowling Club, teaming up with noted Christchurch player, Bev Morel, to deliver a commanding victory in the 18-end final. The duo made light work of the early stages of the competition to breeze through qualifying and into the final 32, and then worked their way down to the semi-finals yesterday morning. They won that match comfortably to set up a final with Clare Hendra and Tayla Bruce – both of whom Keith knows well, having finished second in the national fours with them last year in Central Otago. From almost the outset, the match was a foregone conclusion. With Morel playing like a women possessed off the front and constantly delivering class lead bowls, Keith turned into a converter as the pair raced Sandra Keith away to a massive lead through the first two thirds of the match, and heading into the final stages led by a margin of 16-2 at one stage before rounding out the match to win 19-9. It’s the fourth national title for Keith, and comes ten years after her first when she won the singles. She claimed the pairs with Serena Matthews the following year and won the national fours in 2020 with Hendra, Selina Smith and Tayla Bruce. Keith’s form in recent years looks worthy enough of a potential recall into the national side at some stage, should she wish to wear the silver fern. She’ll get a chance to further that over the coming days when attention turns to the women’s singles event. In the men’s singles, which also finished yesterday – the best results for locals came from both Rob Fensom and Richard Kane who qualified and made it through to the second stage of knockout play before they were beaten. The men begin their pairs quests today, with a number of local combinations in action.
MSA Bowling Club members were happy to get back on their own green.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Living the same day on repeat requires no creativity. You crave a different experience. Where there’s friction, there are sparks... just what your imagination needs to light up. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): When you were small, you sometimes found the talents of others a threat to the attention and resources you needed. Today you welcome inspiration and thrive as you work with equal talents to your own. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The day is cosmically aligned for strategising. Think ahead. Imagine what you are likely to encounter, and then brainstorm how you might handle these variables. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Over time, you’ve put up with a lot of guff from authority. Now that you’ve earned a key place, haven’t you also earned the right to decline participation in particular annoyances? It’s a good day to test the theory. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): In one sense, you know where you are... in some ways, you feel completely lost. Rid yourself of doubt. Affirm your position by noticing where it’s not. Think in terms of opposites. All positioning is relational. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You find it interesting to think about other people’s experience of you. Most will not consider interactions from multiple viewpoints, your skill for perspective hopping will give you many advantages. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Though wary of getting dragged into a drama, you still hear people out. The benefits of doing so outweigh the dangers. Staying open makes you rich in compassion, knowledge and adventures. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Remember when it seemed you would never have a role like the one you have today? But it’s as though all arrows were pointing to where you are now with eyes on a new prize. You’ll get there soon enough! SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Even though you’re in love with some of your current theories, you leave room for doubt. This won’t diminish your confidence; rather, it’s the element of realism that keeps you constantly improving. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Future projections factor into your agenda. Something to keep in mind: The question of what’s possible from a real-world standpoint will be answered very differently five years from now. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): There was a time you felt unheard. Now people are listening, and you’re not always sure what to say. While some would take the opportunity to say all, you’re strategic. What’s will help? Start with that. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The child says it’s too hot. The customer says it’s too heavy. The boss says it’s too loud. You’ll stay nimble in the face of the shifting needs and fickle interests of those you aim to serve.
