College Pride

To Ashburton College’s Imogene Felton (left) and Emily Greer it’s much more than just a flag. It’s their gay pride flag, which is recognised internationally as a symbol for the LGBTQI+ rainbow community. But not everyone was happy about it being raised at the college. It was stolen and burned but the school’s small pride group are boxing on and next year that’ll see the college ditch gendered leadership titles to become more READ MORE P2 inclusive to all students.

Proudly waving the Pride flag LGBTQ+ communities all around the world. The group wants to put the flag incident behind them and focus on their main goal to provide a safe space for the Rainbow community at the college, while also making changes to school policy to make it more inclusive. Next year, that would be seen with Ashburton College no longer having a head girl and boy. Instead, they would have head students to be more gender inclusive. “Our goal is to have a legacy for students to feel comfortable and safe here,” Greer said. For now, though, the group would continue to make their voice heard in the community and to be accepted, according to fellow group co-leader Imogene Felton. “Our group, and other groups like (us), have to work towards getting a greater visibility and tolerance towards our culture and our people here at college,’’ Felton said. “Because, quite frankly at the moment, there is not that acceptance or tolerance.’’

Daniel Alvey Ashburton College’s Pride group leader says having their Rainbow community flag stolen and destroyed “hurt a lot’’ but they’re forging ahead with their inclusivity message. Emily Greer said her small group of 10 Pride students, who hope to promote acceptance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI+) Rainbow community, were upset when the flag was stolen and burnt by yet-to-be confirmed perpetrators. “It’s a big thing having a flag up and it’s a really big thing taking it down,’’ Greer said. “Even if they thought it was funny at the time, it hurt a lot. It really sucked.’’ The Rainbow flag was raised at school during June’s Pride month, which nationally is dedicated to celebrating the

Study could reignite plans for Ashburton sports hub Jonathan Leask A study into the district’s sports facilities could renew the plans for a sports hub centred around the EA Networks Centre. Ashburton’s Sport Canterbury regional manager, Jan Cochrane, said with the Ashburton District Council and sporting bodies looking at planning ahead, it could be time to revisit the green field development at the EA Networks Centre, but any decisions will depend on the findings in the utilisation study. “It’s the time for everyone to collaborate, look at what the vision is and how sports are currently situated,” Cochrane said. Council’s community services group manager, Steve Fabish, said the utilisation study of the EA Networks Centre and district sports fields will take place later this year. “The utilisation study is about identifying the current usage of the activities within the EA Networks Centre and, where we have issues with peak periods and times of low usage, where there are other opportunities to increase the usage,” Fabish said. “A similar study will analyse usage of our district’s existing developed sports fields.

“All of the information will be of high value in supporting any council decisions in the upcoming 2024/2034 long-term plan, with regards to any expansion of the EA Networks Centre and development of additional sports fields.” The council owns a large tract of land, around 15 hectares, to the west of the sports centre. Securing additional land to futureproof the stadium site by providing room for the stadium to be extended and space for a variety of outdoor sports to become part of the sports hub, was critical for the council when it signed off the project. “When the site was chosen that EA Networks Centre is now built on, the land surrounding it was identified as a vision for it to be-

come a sports hub in the future,” Cochrane said. Whether that time was now will be determined by the findings of the council study, she said.

Other councils in Canterbury have established sports hubs, such as the Selwyn District’s Foster Park in Rolleston and Waimakariri setting up a sports hub in

Rangiora next to Mainpower Oval. “We have seen in other regions the positive benefits of having a sports hub in one place,” Cochrane said.

The Ashburton clock is an ideal venue for the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar to gather. It’s ticking down on the third attempt to present the award-winning Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical, but this time they all believe it will happen.

Third time the charm? Third time lucky. Last week the trio of director Roger Farr, musical director Jo Castelow and choreographer, Julia Bell, started putting the jigsaw back together again so Jesus Christ Superstar could be staged in Ashburton. The cast came together on Sunday to start rehearsals for the October show in the Ashburton Event Centre. The rehearsal period for the Andrew

Lloyd Webber musical will be the longest in Ashburton musical history. They began two years ago but, with the August 2020 and March 2021 productions cancelled because of Covid restrictions, the mostly original cast has finally assembled this year, determined to perform the show. “With every cloud there’s a silver lining and the cast is already delivering some amazing work,” Roger Farr said. “I couldn’t be happier with where we are.”

The trio has gathered a cast and band of 46 on stage with a further 35 working behind the scenes. “There’s a huge amount of determination to get this one across the line from everyone involved,” Farr said. Tickets for Jesus Christ Superstar go on sale this Friday with limited earlybird options available. The production runs from October 1-8 at the Ashburton Event Centre.

The Hakatere Multi-Cultural Council is the big winner in the latest Community Trust Mid and South Canterbury grants, receiving $15,000. The trust has dished out $2.5 million to community groups in its latest round of grants. Hakatere multi-cultural council co-ordinator, Mercedes Walkham, said the money will be going towards operational costs for the business, “running the office, and covering petrol”. Due to rising inflation, Walkham said the timing of the grant was opportune. The money will help relieve some financial pressure which will help the team focus on helping the community. The organisation holds regular events such as cooking classes, dancing lessons, parent groups, and meeting groups, to help mainly migrants and promote multi-ethnic activities in the district. The council’s latest event is free dancing lessons at Armadillos every Thursday night with dance teachers Lyn and Richard George, teaching participants the salsa. “They are very passionate about salsa,” Walkham said. And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, the next cooking class will be learning how to make Japanese sushi cakes and mochi ice cream by local Chiyo Hunt at the end of the month. Farmers focused on wintering well Farmers Ewen Mathieson and Ben Tosswill are working hard to protect their stock and the environment, by wintering well during the coldest months of the year. Traditionally, July brings chilly temperatures, wet weather, and an increased risk of snow. To help farmers stay on top of these challenging conditions, Southland dairy farmer Mathieson and Hawke’s Bay sheep farmer Tosswill are sharing their experiences of managing winter grazing. Speaking on a DairyNZ podcast, both Mathieson and Tosswill agree that planning ahead, developing contingency plans, and carrying out daily checks are key to providing good animal care, protecting the environment, and minimising stress for people and animals over winter. “Having a wintering plan helps identify risks like slopes, water sources, and different soil types which helps us to plan our winter grazing to reduce the risk of contaminant and sediment runoff,” Mathieson said. “Planning allows us to think through the different scenarios that could occur over winter and prepare for them. It helps reduce stress and allows you to get a better night’s sleep,” Tosswill said. Mathieson has developed small sawdust pads on his farm to provide cows with a comfortable space to move to and lie on in bad weather. “Cows need to be able to lie down while they are digesting feed,” Mathieson explained. “They need to express their natural behaviours and lying down is an important part of this.

Ben Tosswill: With the new regulations coming in next winter, North Island farmers also need to have a wintering plan and understand how practices affect the environment. PHOTO SUPPLIED

“With the new regulations coming in next winter, North Island farmers also need to have a wintering plan and understand how practices affect the environment. We developed our plan for this year and are still learning about our impact,” Toswill said. Mathieson said a particular focus on his farm was checking animals regularly – once or even twice daily. “This helps us catch issues early so that small issues don’t escalate into bigger problems.” DairyNZ’s head of the South Island, Tony Finch, said during July and August the weather could be very cold and unpredictable, and farmers needed to

keep up their focus on caring for stock right to the end of winter. Last winter, 89 per cent of farmers developed a contingency plan to protect their animals and the environment in bad weather. Finch said it’s not too late for farmers to develop a Plan B if adverse weather strikes, using DairyNZ’s template. “If you do have a Plan B, check your team understand when to action it.” Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s environmental policy manager Heather McKay said the wintering grazing module in Beef +Lamb NZ’s farm plan would help farmers identify risks and take action to mitigate them.

Spreading the security word A series of rural security workshops in Canterbury provided an opportunity to spread the word about the New Zealand Police’s new trial rural crime prevention. Hosted by FMG and supported by Federated Farmers and New Zealand Police, these regular workshops aimed to educate and engage the rural community around security issues and solutions and encourage social connections over shared kai. At events in Amberley, Oxford, Culverden and Cheviot, senior constable Tony Maw and New Zealand Police project manager Lisa May presented the latest crime statistics and trends and provided an update on the North Canterbury Rural Crime Prevention trial. Local police staff also attended. Maw said the main message was report, report, report. “Crime is like a squeaky wheel – if we can’t hear it, we can’t fix it,” he said. “In our most recent Rural Crime Survey, 31 per cent who experienced an incident said they didn’t report it to police and, disappointingly, 47 per cent didn’t improve security after the incident. Maw and May also used the workshops to promote Rural Lookout, the crime prevention app being trialled in Waimakariri and Hurunui. Since its launch on May 4, Rural Lookout has been downloaded over 2300 times and more than 80 reports have been made. So far, suspicious persons or vehicles have made up the majority of the reports, as well as anti-social road use, wilful damage, and drones. May said these are exactly the types of activities they want to see being reported. “These are the sorts of things that wouldn’t normally be reported,” said May, “but they add to a bigger picture”. “In one instance, we were able to identify a stolen and abandoned vehicle on a remote rural road before it was even reported stolen.”

Ellis Lea sells for $70 million Pat Deavoll Ellis Lea, a substantial South Canterbury dairy farm portfolio, has been acquired by an undisclosed New Zealand based investor in one of the country’s largest ever rural transactions. The offering comprised two dairy farms, Grandview and Lamorna, together with support block Collett Farm. The transaction, negotiated by Colliers rural advisor George Morris and Mark Parry, was the most significant land sale seen in the Canterbury dairy market for some time, totalling more than $70 million as a going concern. Collectively they produced an impressive 1,789,898kgMS in the 2020/21 season, equating to 465kgMS per cow or 1896 kgMS per effective hectare, with only 692kgDM of introduced feed fed per cow. Morris said the impressive production was underpinned by an equally impressive financial performance. Grandview Farm, in Old Main South Road, Orton, covers 420ha while nearby Lamorna, at Chalmers Road, spans 524ha. The 249ha Collett run-off is approximately 30 minutes from the farms. The scale of the offering, sold as one portfolio, meant the buyer was unlikely to be local, Morris said. “We were confident the likely buyer was going to come from a group of parties active in the market – including, corporates, institutional funds, and large-scale families who we knew were genuine and qualified. “Given the complexity of the transaction, and the due diligence required, it

Leadership award Aorangi regional chair for Young Farmers James Hurst has been awarded 2021’s leadership award for demonstrating the core values of Young Farmers and leading the Aorangi region to success. Nominated by a friend, Hurst was described as hard-working and a great role model. Hurst was thrown in the deep end when elected as Aorangi regional chair with a few clubs struggling to get members and at risk of folding. He held the role for three years and in that time, increased membership of those clubs and provided guidance to address their problems. He reimplemented the region’s two districts to bring clubs together and encouraged one person from each club to be part of the

regional executive team so that their needs were represented. He also focused on succession in the region by involving the vice-chairs in his role to ease the step up to chair. It was noted the structure Hurst created for Aorangi would have flow-on effects that would benefit the club moving into the future. Hurst was also described as incredibly giving, always having time to help others, sharing his knowledge and experience, and often leant a helping hand to other members facing challenges. “He is relatable and easy to get on with, James has a great passion for the NZYF organisation and has had a significant role in the success of this region,” said a nominator.

Holden for All Blacks’ coaching role

D

ear New Zealand Rugby chief executive officer Mark Robinson. I feel your pain. I sense your frustration. Fortunately, relief is here. Because this is a quick note to advise you that, after watching that bumbling, ill-disciplined, poorly selected All Blacks team get so outplayed by Ireland in Dunedin on Saturday, that I’ve decided to step up for the country. I’ve decided to immediately make myself available to take over as head coach through to the Rugby World Cup next year. Yes, I know you somehow thought Ian Foster was the man for the job in 2019, and that he’s signed as head coach until after the world cup. But honestly, I think we both now realise that Fossie as a head coach is as useful as a handbrake on a canoe or windscreen wipers on a submarine. So, why me for the ABs’ top

Daryl Holden coaching job? Well, to be fair, it’s not necessarily because of my rugby coaching experience, unless you count my player-coaching days for the Clarendon Primary School’s top team in Invercargill when, my superior coin tossing skills and ability to slice the halftime oranges to perfection, was enough for the lads to let me call the shots. Anyway, coaching experience shouldn’t matter because cynics, and, yes, perhaps at times that has included yours truly, have for years said that anyone could coach an All Blacks’ team to victory. They’ve said it’s just a matter of making sure all the players get

on the bus to the ground, and that the bus doesn’t crash. And to a certain extent, that’s true. I think you and I both know that an All Black side coached by United States’ President Joe Biden would probably win 50 per cent of their matches, and he gives the impression he couldn’t coach sheep to eat grass.

what he’s doing or can’t inspire his players to do the right thing. Let’s start with the big boys up front, the props. The non-selection of Highlanders’ bookend Ethan de Groot was as weird as the hairstyle of halfback Folau Fakatava. You’ll remember that Fossie justified it by saying de Groot wasn’t

I think we both now realise that Fossie as a head coach is as useful as a handbrake on a canoe or windscreen wipers on a submarine.

I don’t want to come down too hard on Fossie, but some of his decisions, and the inconsistent performances of his team and their ill-disciplined red and yellow card ways, give the distinct impression that he has no idea

fit enough to be picked, but two weeks before that first ABs squad selection for 2022, the 23-yearold had scrummaged veteran All Black tighthead Ofa Tuungafasi off the park in a Super Rugby Pacific quarter-final. Then, to confound

it further, Fossie named Blues’ prop Karl Tu’inukuafe instead, even though he’s off to play in France at the end of the year. The reasoning? Tu’inukuafe is apparently rated the best loosehead scrummager in the country. Fair enough maybe, and we presume that’s why Tu’inukuafe played in the first test against Ireland in Auckland, but in the second test in Dunedin he couldn’t even make the match day squad. Can someone please explain that? How is his selection, and then non-selection, getting us ready for the world cup? It’s the sort of selection fiasco that makes you wonder if Fossie and company know an international prop from a plate of broccoli. Harsh, maybe. But Robo, it’s time to act. Do the right thing. Just give me the keys to that All Black bus. I can’t possibly do any worse.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’ll be the one who brings everyone together. Does knowing they will influence one another for better and worse make you reconsider your guest list? TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Trials are your best teachers. You’ll meet challenges that affirm your strength and resourcefulness. Fellow earth signs Virgo and Capricorn prove worthy team members. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Nonproductive stretches can be uncomfortable or even alarming for movers like you. Don’t fight it; ride it. Something excellent will come out of the break, and it actually won’t put you behind at all. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Not all boundaries are meant to keep others out. Often the fences and limits provide a much-needed sense of order. Lay down a few rules to give structure to today’s uncharted territory. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Everyone falls. Whether you fall down, fall short or fall for the tricks and traps of a wild world, there’s only one thing to do – pick yourself up and walk on with the lesson in your pocket. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): “Just be yourself,” they say. Meanwhile, “yourself” isn’t the easiest person to “just be,” when you’re exploring and becoming. So instead, experiment and be whoever you want to be in the moment. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You cultivate an atmosphere of emotional safety around you. People sense you’ll take care of them and make their lives a little easier, maybe even momentarily delightful. No wonder you’re popular. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It requires courage to take a chance. Give yourself credit for assuming a risk, carrying it and being big enough to accept the consequences, whatever they may be. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Maybe the mystics and geniuses are right about life being an illusion. The question is what to do about it. Can you dream differently? What would it take to pierce the perception that entraps you? CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Stimulating environments engage the mind, but when they go on too long, imagination suffers. Creativity needs breathing room that only boredom can provide. A dull stretch is the precursor to inspiration. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Boasting, posing and posturing is the behaviour of insecurity and under-confidence. You get the best out of yourself and others by offering the remedy of kind attention and acceptance. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The relationships you cherish the most will be the ones that demand something of you and afford you the opportunity to emotionally expand. When it comes to love, you get what you put in.

Impasse in the mud Steve Devereux Treacherously muddy underfoot, impossible to make the merest of moves safely, freezing cold hands unable to hold on to anything in the bone-chilling wind and rain – and that was just the spectators. Mid-winter rugby arrived with a bang at Celtic Park on Saturday, when Methven came to play on the back of a couple of good wins in recent weeks. With the sharp end of the competition looming, results are vital for every side, and a loss for the green machine would have been a serious blow for their Watters Cup hopes, so there was no shortage of motivation for the players bearing the brunt of conditions that were, simply, horrendous. For the vast majority of the first half, play was a seriously mud-spattered battle of attrition in between the 22 metre lines, with both sides hoisting aerial bombs at every opportunity to try and force the mistake that would give them the advantage. To the admirable credit of both sides’ back threes, almost every single high kick was fielded with aplomb, despite the ball quickly resembling a greasy cake of soap, and returned with interest, or run back into the heavy

Short and sharp Celtic 13 (Raitube

Vasurakuta try, Nathan McCloy 2 pen, conv.) Methven 13 (Matthew Groom, Ben Bartlett tries, Tom Reekie pen).

Celtic’s Max Stapleton throws in to a short lineout in the mud at Celtic Park on Saturday. traffic to set up another attack. Celtic first five Nathan McCloy opened the scoring with a penalty early on, and the centre-field slog-fest continued unabated for half an hour after that. Referee Nathan Forbes was blowing his whistle probably more than he would have wanted, but that too was dictated by the dreadful conditions, with players understandably making more mistakes under pressure, and another penalty came with halftime not far off. Side-line pundits didn’t give the longish-range attempt much chance given the conditions, but McCloy nailed it, and Celtic went into the break with a 6-0 buffer. The second half was, comparatively, much more open, with both sides seeking to give their outside men at least a chance to use the possession that was extremely hard-earned by the efforts of the big guys grinding it out in the sodden, muddy middle. Tom Reekie opened Methven’s

account with a penalty, followed five minutes later with a try to Ben Bartlett. Much of the tactical kicking had changed to an along-theground approach, which was proving effective both ways as well. Raitube Vasurakuta finally managed to hold on to the ball long enough to crash over, with McCloy converting, and the home side led 13-8, with 15 minutes left on the clock to hold out. Another long grubber kick eluded the hands and feet of Celtic defenders wary of the easy knock-on, and Methven mounted a strong assault on the line, with desperate tacklers repeatedly hurling themselves into the fray, but eventually the pressure

was too much, and Matt Groom was the man with ball in hand as they finally smashed their way over. The conversion missed, and a tense final few minutes ensued with the scores level, and both sides launching everything they had left in the tank. McCloy had one final opportunity, with a penalty attempt just shy of the halfway mark, but it would have been in the miracle category under the prevailing climate, and the 13-13 score line went in the book. Two points each from the match was probably a very fair result, which both camps would quickly want to move on from, with big games coming up next week.

Southern go back on top Southern are back on top of the Watters Cup standings this week after a hard-fought victory over Rakaia at Hinds on Friday night. The two sides headed into the match coming off very different weeks after Southern were beaten by Methven and Rakaia came from behind to beat Celtic the weekend prior, and for the majority of the first half it was tit-for-tat under the lights. Southern opened the scoring with a try to second-five Hugo Monie after 15 minutes, with Thomas Middleton adding the extras. Rakaia bounced back quickly with their opening try of the match though, through Lote Limadeni, and for the game looked set to go into the break locked at 7-all. A late try by Middleton in the first half gave Southern some breathing room though, and when he added the extras, they took a seven-point lead into the sheds for a spot of warming up and to plan for the second half. The discussions in the Southern shed proved spot on, as they continued their record of strong second halves to completely shut out Rakaia and extend their lead. Middleton added a penalty early on in proceedings before Makasiale Kauvanua scored his side’s third try of the night. Middleton added the extras to complete a 16-point haul for the evening and to guide his team to success. The win pushes Southern onepoint clear of Methven on the overall standings and puts them in a good position if they can beat Celtic this weekend in what will be a vital match heading into the final week of pool play. Rakaia will need to pull off two miracles to get back in on the Watters Cup action by beating Methven this weekend, and then turn the tables on Southern in the final week of pool play.

Farewell to an old friend Matt Markham

T

oday we remember fondly an old friend, rugby – as we knew it. Encaptivating, entertaining, and exciting. All you could ask for in sporting viewing, and often at times, so much more. Collectively, we’ve sat on the edge of our seats. Yelled at television sets and from the chill of the seat at a stadium as she’s unfolded in front of our eyes. Knowing that while brutal in its existence, rugby offered a form of contact sport that few else could rival. But on Saturday night, across two countries – and perhaps over the past 12 months, at least – that world came crumbling down. Demolished into a shadow of its former self. A game now fraught with perils at every cor-

ner. A game that’s lost its spark. A new kind of new rugby still exists. But whether it’s what was required, or wanted, is very much up for debate. And debate, the rugby-loving world is. Ruled by the mighty whistle, rugby, as a match, is now but a pawn in the referee’s game. It’s not so much about the players anymore, it’s about what the referee and those assisting interpret the laws to be, and at every nook and cranny there’s investigation into foul play, be it intentional or be it without malice. And it’s ruined the spectacle. From Australian winger Izaia Perese’s yellow card for an attempted intercept gone bad to the ridiculous scenes under the roof in Dunedin in the first half between the All Blacks and the Irish, all the proof is there that rugby is now but a shadow of itself, if not even a completely new game in which everyone is struggling to adapt and accept. Yes, players need to adapt. Yes, there needs to be a better

All Blacks captain, Sam Cane walks away while referee Jaco Peyper shows Angus Ta’avao red during the second test against Ireland on Saturday night. understanding of the rules, but World Rugby needs to take an uppercut on the chin here too. Their message of intent around new rulings and ways in which the game should be played have stymied all the progress that’s been made over decades of the

game being played. It’s not now about who can outscore the other team as much as it is about who can remain with 15 men, or women, on the paddock for the longest. That in itself is often the main catalyst behind a final match

result. On Saturday night, the All Blacks well and truly lost that particular battle. Cards everywhere, some deserved, but others more than a little contentious. And what should have been an incredible match between two great rugby sides was reduced to nothing more than fodder for rival sporting codes to sit back and laugh at. How do we fix it? A revisit of the rules around the contact area would be a good start. During the Angus Ta’avao incident on Saturday night, a list appeared on the screen indicating that one of the factors taken into account in handing out a penalty or a card for such an incident needed to be proof that the contact was either foul play, or intentional. Foul or intentional play should be the only factor in dishing out a red card. End of story. As for the All Blacks’ performance itself? Well, that’s a completely different novel that needs to be dissected.

Busy weekend on the mats

SPORT 21 SHORT & SHARP

Football postponed

Mainland Football matches across the Canterbury region were postponed on the weekend due to the wet weather which struck over Friday and Saturday morning. In an effort to maintain playing fields the call was made on Friday night to postpone football across all grades with matches to be caught up at a later stage in the season.

Hockey defeat

Matt Markham While the rain fell down relentlessly outside, Ashburton’s indoor bowls community was busy across the weekend. A double-representative fixture on Saturday across Ashburton and Timaru was concluded by the annual Husband and Wife and Jack and Jill Pairs at the stadium on Sunday afternoon. Five teams lined up in each of the pairs competitions on Sunday, with good competitive bowls played across both. Due to the low numbers, both events were played as round robin competitions with each team playing in four games throughout the afternoon. Kevin and Gaylene Smith emerged victorious in the husband-and-wife pairs event, just edging past Murray and Lynette Bassett who claimed the runner-up prize. Their son, Mat, continued his good run of recent form with another victory, taking out the jackand-jill event with Becky Mavor finishing ahead of the motherand-son duo of Jacqui and Colin Gilbert. Sunday’s play followed on from a busy Saturday in which two representative teams competed. Eight players travelled to Timaru to take on South Canterbury in the annual Prattley Trophy – a final hit-out for both sides ahead of this weekend’s Paterson Trophy playoffs. South Canterbury lifted the trophy for the first time since its inception five years ago with a 39-32 scoreline. They also brought back to their home base the annual Triangular trophy between themselves, Ashburton and North Otago after winning that at the McNally Street Stadium on the same afternoon.

The Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s hockey side’s bid for the top spot in Division One of Canterbury Hockey struck a snag on Saturday when they were beaten by Southern Sluggers 1-4. In a grudge match after Mid Canterbury handed out a similar hiding early on in the season, Southern proved too strong for the green and golds with a goal to Scott Marshall the only resistance in the match. The Senior Women’s side is on a two week break and returns to play on July 23.

Maui wins again Mid Canterbury trotter, Maui, picked up his second win of his current campaign on Friday night – continuing an excellent run of form for the fouryear-old. Driven by Lawrence McCormick for his father, David who does the training, Maui secured the trail early and held too many guns for his rivals up the straight to pick up the sixth win of his career. Both Ricky May and Gerard O’Reilly claimed driving wins over the weekend. O’Reilly saluted about Beach Hopper on Friday night while May was successful with Westar Lad on Sunday.

Tight encounters Close matches were the order of the weekend in Mid Canterbury Senior B rugby on the weekend as the business end of the season looms. Hampstead picked up an all-important win against Methven to go clear in the Centennial Mug competition for the second round, winning 21-17 while Mt Somers kept in touch with a 17-7 win over Collegiate. Celtic were too strong for Allenton winning 24-16 in the other match with Southern and Rakaia’s clash ending in a win by default for Southern.

Husband and Wife pairs winners, Gaylene and Kevin Smith.
