Love my new wheels The smile says it all from Ashburton youngster Rebecca Oakley, proudly taking her new scooter for a whirl at the skate park. The scooter was gifted to Rebecca by a 91-yearold Ashburton man, who was horrified to read in the Guardian what the 12-year-old endured in a nasty incident at the skate park. Rebecca was verbally abused, threatened, and had her scooter forcibly taken from her, and later found destroyed.

Gift brings back the smiles Cameras on the agenda for skate park

Daniel Alvey Thanks to a very kind donation from a Guardian reader, 12-yearold Rebecca Oakley is able to get back to learning her tricks on the scooter, after hers was stolen last week. The donor, who the Guardian agreed not to name, didn’t want publicity for his good deed, said he thought of his own grandchildren and how upset they would be if this happened to them. “When I read the story, I thought of my grandchildren. I wanted to get her (Rebecca) back on her scooter again,” the donor said.

you so “ Thank much, all I want

to do is give you a big hug.

Rebecca was surprised with her new scooter delivered to her at the skate park and she jumped on the scooter and immediately got back to practising her tricks. Rebecca had a message for the for the kind donor: “Thank you so much, all I want to do is give you a big hug.” Rebecca’s father, Laurence Oakley, was surprised with the extremely generous donation. “I didn’t expect anything like that. “It’s good to see that there are still some good people out there,” he said. Rebecca had her scooter stolen at the park last week when she was involved in an altercation with some other young children. While the stolen scooter was eventually found, it was in an irreparable state with the handle bars bent down and brake cut. Laurence said that from now on Rebecca would always be going to the skate park with adult supervision.

A welcome surprise: The Oakley family (from left) Laurence, Rebecca, and David were very happy with the generous donation.

The Ashburton District Council is now looking at installing cameras that cover the skate park area. After the recent incidents which included Rebecca Oakley and her grandmother sworn at and her scooter taken from her the next day, as well as another incident on Monday between different youth, the council confirmed it would look at installing cameras in the area. “In response to the recent interest in safety at the park, council is undertaking some preliminary investigation into the cost of installing CCTV in the area,” Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said. Father of the girl involved in the incident, Laurence Oakley said the addition of the cameras “was a step in the right direction” because in future there could be video evidence of any incidents. The skate park sits between State Highway One and the rail tracks, a location which Riach said was chosen deliberately. “The location of the skate park was deliberately chosen when it was developed, as it was a highly-visible site with lighting. It is popular and safely used by most users; a Youth Council audit of 33 young people last year found 94 per cent felt safe there.” Riach said that any public safety concerns should be reported to the police.

Weather brings mixed blessings

SHORT & SHARP

Daniel Alvey Throughout Tuesday the whole district was battered with rain and snow, bringing good news for some and bad news for others. Mt Hutt Ski Area reported half a metre of snow after the storm had passed, shutting the skifield yesterday as crews worked to complete storm clean-up and vital avalanche control on the slopes. Ski area manager James McKenzie said the storm had provided a well needed topup to the upper mountain to open more terrain, as wind had meant much of the snow before the storm had settled on the lower mountain. While it was happy snow dances on the skifield, Methven

residents were left to boil water once again, with the Ashburton District Council sending a water tanker to the township to help provide clean water. Infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann said the tanker would also be visiting businesses and cafes in the town to refill water containers. “Council recognises that it’s harder for local businesses to operate under the boil water notice, and we want to support them. The tanker will check in on them daily until the boil water notice is lifted.” State Highway 77 reopened yesterday after flood waters made it impassable, highway users were still advised to travel with caution. While all the main arterial highways in Mid Canterbury are open some smaller roads remain closed due to flood waters, it is advised to check Waka Kotahi website and the Ashburton District Council website for the latest road closures.

Ashburton’s first primary school, Ashburton Borough, will celebrate its 150th anniversary on November 25 and 26. The school first opened in February 1872 on a site now occupied by St Stephen’s Church parish centre. Today the school has a roll of 340 students from new entrants through to Year 8. Further details are on its Facebook page (Ashburton Borough 150th celebration) or by emailing ashborough150@ gmail.com

Holiday activity Pop Up Playground has bought some inflatable fun to keep the kids and the big kids happy these school holidays. Local Amber Kohalmi, along with her mother Claire Kohalmi, and her partner Shane Scarth, decided to start the business after the first lockdown in 2020. The pop up playground is a collection of different inflatable themed playgrounds which will be set up in the Sports Hall until Friday.

Two local arrests linked to shooting Police arrested two people in Ashburton in relation to the shooting in Rolleston. Two search warrants were executed in Ashburton on Monday after a man was shot on Maddisons Road and is in hospital in a stable condition. One address searched in Ashburton is asso-

ciated with the Mongols Motorcycle Club. A 31-year-old Mongols affiliate has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and unlawful possession of a firearm. He appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody.

Borough anniversary

A 32-year-old patched Mongols member was also arrested and charged with drug related offences and will appear in the Ashburton District Court. Police believe a number of other people were involved in the incident and are following several strong leads, with further arrests likely.

Three Waters matters We all depend on having safe, affordable drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services.

The Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury has made grants totalling $154,500 for its round one distribution for 2022. It was incorrectly reported that the trust distributed $2.5 million to community groups in its most recent round of grants. The $2.5 million figure was the total amount granted for the whole of the trust’s 2021 financial year.

Have Your Say

There’s reform underway to ensure New Zealand’s three waters system meets the needs of today, and the growing challenges of population growth and climate change, and potential natural disasters. A key focus is on creating the scale and structural changes that will enable the significant investment required to upgrade water pipes and build new treatment plants across the country. This will come at a high cost, beyond what councils and ratepayers can afford. The Water Services Entities Bill will shift water services from 67 councils to four new water service entities owned by each region’s councils on behalf of their local communities. While councils will own the entities on behalf of their communities, the entities will operate independently, enabling strategic long-term investment without being subject to competing demands. It’s important to get this right so that all New Zealanders can continue to have confidence in our three waters system into the future, so we encourage you to contribute by making a select committee submission, an important part of the parliamentary process. You can find out more about the Water Services Entities Bill at www.dia.govt.nz/Three-Waters-Reform-Programme and have your say by making a submission to the select committee through the Parliament website: bit.ly/3W-WSEB.

Submissions open until Friday, 22 July 2022.

Former Ashburton woman receives Queen’s gong Malcolm Hopwood A commitment to zoos and conservation has seen a former Ashburton woman receive the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) from the Governor General. Chief executive of Orana Wildlife Park, Lynn Anderson, received the Queen’s award from Dame Cindy Kiro at an investiture ceremony in Christchurch last Friday. Anderson told the Ashburton Guardian, the honour “was a complete surprise, and I felt extremely humbled”. “Conservation is what gets me out of bed in the morning,” she said. As a small child in Ashburton she was “mad on horses and loved my pets”. It wasn’t surprising she accepted the position of Orana’s Park manager 26 years ago and became its CEO within 12 months. In the 1990s, she brought it back from financial difficulty, and has now turned Orana into a globally recognised zoo that makes a significant contribution to conservation. She said Orana has “taken incredible steps towards preserving New Zealand’s most threatened species”. In particular, she referred to Canterbury’s only parakeet, the kakariki karaka, of which there

With the death of Orana’s

40-year-old breeding bull three weeks ago, Anderson and her team are bringing 15 white rhinos from South Africa to Christchurch within six months and are currently extending the sanctuary for them. “White rhinos are reducing in number due to poachers and more than half of those coming here are orphans,” she said.

Anderson has held numerous governance roles with the zoo industry over the last 20 years including New Zealand representation on the Zoo and Aquarium Association Australasia (ZAA) Board, a member of ZAA New Zealand management committee for 21 years and the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce for sev-

4WD thefts Last week we had four cars taken, this week we haven’t had the same, but just a bit of a trend with four-wheel-drives being the

flavour of the month, but here are some simple things that can be done to keep them safe. These include always locking your vehicle when you leave it. Close all windows, including sunroofs. Park in well-lit areas if possible. Try not to leave valuables in your car. Thieves will break in for something as small as loose change. If you have to leave valuables in your car, make sure they

are out of sight, but remember hiding them is not as safe as removing them. Don’t leave documents with personal information or keys to your house, business, and boat in your vehicle. Final resting place of Moriori bones is the Chathams Malcolm Hopwood The return of more than 100 Moriori remains to New Zealand can only be completed when they’re buried on The Chathams. Ashburton’s Ray Solomon, grandson of the last full-blooded Moriori, Tommy Solomon, attended the ceremony at Te Papa last Friday when 111 sketetal remains were brought back, and said the bones must be repatriated to their homeland Rekohu (Chatham Islands). Solomon was one of 150 Moriori members who travelled to Wellington to attend the ceremony. He said the return of the 111 skeleton remains from London’s Natural History Museum was the largest repatriation of bones any iwi has received. Inside the boxes, presented at Te Papa by descendants, were skulls, mandibles, other bones and a small number of complete skeletons. “It was a very moving ceremony,” Solomon said. “To exhibit the remains overseas was one of the biggest upsets we’ve endured. Robbing them from graves was sacrilege.” “They are very sacred to Moriori.” Solomon said it was hard to identify who the ancestors they were. Some were buried in sand dunes, making them easy to rob. To him, the importance of the ceremony

Inset – Ray Solomon. was the repatriation of the bones and the powhiri to welcome them back. “There was no justification in removing them and, as part of the hui, representatives from museums apologised for keeping them for themselves.” Moriori Trust chair, Maui Solomon, a

cousin of Ray’s, called the return of the skeletal remains as “a significant milestone for my people. They were taken by bone collectors whose only interest was trading, selling and researching and they’ve ended up in museums,” he said. While at Te Papa, they won’t be dis-

played. “That’s insulting and an affront to us,” he said. Solomon said they’ll be in Te Papa’s care only temporarily and he’s working to move them back to the Chathams, a decision supported by his cousin. “When they’re finally buried, I’d like to be there,” Ray Solomon said.

Funding Pharmac’s wonder drugs is ‘well overdue’ Malcolm Hopwood An Ashburton man who spent more than $120,000 on unsubsidised drugs welcomes Pharmac’s decision to consider funding new lung cancer medications. Three years ago Andre van Rooyen was given three to six months to live. Conventional chemotherapy might’ve extended his life, but an unfunded drug Crizotinib had the potential to treat his rare form of lung cancer. At the time Andre and his wife, Debbie, said they’d “take a step in faith and give it a go”. Over the next 12 months Andre’s health gradually improved as the drug was able to shrink the lung cancer growth, but at a cost to the van Rooyens’ savings. At about $10,000 a month, they paid over $120,000 with the community funding about half of that. Due to pressure from the family’s Christchurch oncologist and constant calls from the van Rooyens, drug company Pfizer, put Andre on the trial drug, Lorlatinib, an upgraded version of Crizotinib. “We were a pain in the neck of the drug company until they agreed to trial us on the drug at no cost,” Andre said. “It’s a new version. The nuts and

bolts of the initial drug are the same. “It’s my understanding I’m the only person in Australasia on Lorlatinib.” While Andre may have early onset arthritis and a high cholesterol level, he can now coach tennis, play golf and devote as much time as he can to the community. The van Rooyens support Pharmac’s willingness to consider more lung cancer medications, including the wonder drug, Keytruda. “It’s well overdue. A lot of people who haven’t had the funds to pay for medication have missed out,” Debbie van Rooyen said. “Andre wouldn’t have been with us if we didn’t use our savings. “We’re excited Pharmac is able to consider making those life-saving drugs available to the community.” The Cancer Society of New Zealand has been part of advocating for lung cancer medications, including Keytruda, for the past five years. National president, Alister Argyle from Ashburton, said if it’s publicly funded it “will make a significant difference to more than 20 lung cancer patients across New Zealand weekly”. He expressed disbelief it’s available in almost every OECD country, but only used in New Zealand for melanoma sufferers. “We want Pharmac to fast-track their decision as soon as possible,” he said.

Right – Andre van Rooyen, pictured with son, Sebastian, has made great progress on a trial drug, in the last few months.

Decision day for Christchurch stadium Jonathan Leask Neighbouring councils have been briefed by the Christchurch City Council on its proposed multi-use arena, Te Kaha, ahead of a landmark decision on its future today. The city council will vote on whether to proceed with the 30,000-seat covered arena that is currently forecast to cost $683 million after a $150m cost blowout.

There has been suggestions that its neighbouring Canterbury councils could help foot the bill, but when the city council sat down with its neighbours recently it didn’t pass the hat around or even broach the subject. “The city council gave us and some other Canterbury councils an update briefing last week – focused on the arena design and the process the council is following,” Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said. “The briefing made no general or specific request of us at all, it was simply an update on where the city council is at.”

The funding request conversation may still come after today’s decision. Te Kaha Project Delivery Limited (TKPDL) has succeeded in negotiating a fixed price for the multi-use arena with its lead contractor BESIX Watpac, and the city council will consider that offer today. TKPDL chair, Barry Bragg, said that they are confident the arena can be delivered for a total project cost of $683 million, which includes sufficient contingency to cover any issues that might possibly emerge during the build. It has been estimated that $30

million would be spent on review and redesign, which would push out the completion date by nine to 12 months to 2027. Venues Otautahi, who will operate the arena, will also update the council on the key design features, economic impacts, and the lifecycle costs of the multi-use arena. The city council received around 30,000 submissions on the possibility of increasing the budget for the multi-use arena and 77 per cent were in support of putting more money into the project. Research analyst Aimee Martin said only eight per cent of the

submitters indicated they want the project paused and re-evaluated, while 15 per cent want it stopped completely. The city council meeting begins at 10am and will be livestreamed.

LETTERS TO EDITOR Disgusting rugby Watching the rugby over the weekend, I was disgusted at the way the game has developed. Endless stoppages for foul play, and the frequent issuing of yellow or red cards. Sometimes quite justified, but almost as often, in my opinion, not justified. These cards are, of course, issued against the tackler, but what about the ball carrier? As often as not, he comes in with arm braced across his chest, and/or knee raised to ‘assault’ the tackler, who is

quite often left stunned on the turf. No penalty though against the ball carrier. Sadly, as I have said, this is the way the game has developed, and it is not pretty to watch. I am just one of many armchair critics, but am rapidly loosing my desire to even watch the game. What is the answer? Remember those great running games we used to see? Bruce Leighton

Library drops overdue book fines The Ashburton Public Library is hoping to see more users now it has scrapped fines for overdue books.

The library dropped fines for overdue books borrowed from the children’s library in 2019 and this month it dropped overdue fines for the adult library. Council Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said overdue fines had been reducing in recent years as more borrowers took advantage of online services.

“But this is more about removing barriers for some users. Nervousness about incurring fines has been keeping some people away, especially when they are busy and with the cost of living rising, as it is now.”

“Library fines particularly affect those who cannot afford to pay and then those people stop using the library. We’re hoping that by removing fines, we’re removing a barrier to using our libraries,” Mr Fabish said. “We are looking forward to welcoming back anyone who has stopped using the library because of the fear of accumulating fines.” He said income from fines was not significant.

Ash trees coming down on East St

Eight unhealthy Ash trees on the East Street green opposite Farmers will be carefully removed by contractors on Thursday 21 July.

“Council was happy to drop the overdue fines, as members can easily renew a book online now anyway to avoid fines.

The decision to remove the overdue fines was made by Council as part of setting the Annual Plan for 2022-23. It brings the Ashburton Public Library into line with many other libraries around New Zealand and the world, which have become fines free.

Thursday, 14 July 2022 | ISSUE 87

The trees to be removed are between the footpath and the paved shared path for pedestrians and cyclists. A line of older Ash trees on the western side of the shared path will remain. Library manager Jill Watson returns books to the shelves in the now fines-free library.

“When you put it against the whole library budget and the investment that council makes, it’s a small amount of money really, and staff no longer have to have those negative and often time-consuming conversations with members.” Borrowers who do not return overdue books will be sent an account for items lost. If books are not returned, then Council will seek to recover the amount owing. “Borrowers will receive email reminders well before this happens and should renew their books when prompted by email.” The library is asking that members ensure their email addresses are up to date, and advise of any changes. Details can be

updated by emailing library@adc.govt. nz, with name/s, borrower number/s, and email. Among those that have also removed overdue fines are Auckland Libraries, Central Hawkes Bay District Libraries, Rangitikei District Council Libraries, Masterton District Library, Upper Hutt Libraries, Selwyn District Libraries, Nelson Public Libraries, Waimakariri Libraries, Timaru District Libraries and Ōpotiki Libraries. The new policy for the Ashburton library took effect on 1 July, so fines outstanding prior to that date will remain on borrowers’ accounts and need to be paid.

Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said the trees had been a lovely feature of the green for years, but had been deteriorating. “Our specialist tree staff have nurtured them for as long as we can but the trees look noticeably poorly and it’s time for them to go. They’ve had a long life and been enjoyed by visitors and locals alike, either walking along the green or seeking shade while having lunch. “We will replace them with a species of Oak trees called Quercus ellipsoidalis.” Contractors are aiming to remove the trees in a day, and will be managing traffic on East Street while work is in progress. Parking along the western side of East Street in the area will also be affected. The felled trees will be taken away for disposal.

Neil McCann, Infrastructure Services Group Manager

Keeping our essential services in shape Our infrastructure teams were on alert this week when MetService issued orange heavy rain warnings for parts of the district. When notified about such events, council staff and contractors immediately prepare by clearing drains and sumps at known flooding spots, and reducing flow in stockwater races. During the event we closely monitor our water, wastewater, stormwater and stockwater networks and respond to issues as they develop, which can sometimes be overwhelming in severe rain events, as in May 2021. The Council Infrastructure Services Group is responsible for the management of drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, stockwater, roads and waste minimisation (rubbish and recycling). 1

Thursday, 14 July 2022 | ISSUE 87

This past year, we have ticked off some significant projects for the district. The CBD upgrade, at around $18 million, started just before covid struck and despite some pretty big challenges, including two lockdowns and maintaining access for businesses and their customers, the project finished on time and within budget. The only outstanding issue is the installation of the parking sensors, as they are currently held up overseas due to supply chain disruptions. The upgrade was important as a vibrant CBD is essential for the town and Council is doing its part alongside building owners and businesses to encourage more people into the CBD. The $10m Ashburton Relief Sewer project was completed recently, and is already taking wastewater (sewage and grey water) from the eastern area of

Ashburton under the Ashburton River to the pump station and treatment facility at Wilkins Road. This kind of infrastructure will help Ashburton town cope with the anticipated population growth over the next 50 years, and if the demand for more development continues, we will certainly need it. Our roads continue to be a big focus with an extra $1.7m put into this year’s budget for improvements. Water is the enemy of roads, and last year’s big flood and rain like this week can lead to more potholes and failures of the road surface. When potholes open up at this time of the year, we temporarily repair them until we can permanently repair them in the warmer months. As a result of consultation on our Annual Plan, Council added some new footpaths to the roading programme.

One is a grit path alongside State Highway 77 from Methven to the new Opuke hot pools, and the other is a grit path on Racecourse Road, from Charlesworth Drive to Allens Road. This latter path won’t be sealed until EA Networks has completed undergrounding their electricity network in the area, but will provide safer passage for pedestrians in the meantime. Key projects for us in the water space include the Methven and Methven Springfield combined water treatment plant, the Mount Somers water treatment plant, a second bore for Rakaia, and a host of sewer main renewals and relining work. ashburtondc.govt.nz

Excitement grows for Glow in the Park

PUBLIC NOTICES

A tethered hot air balloon will add to the atmosphere at Glow in the Park at Tinwald later this month.

ALCOHOL LICENCES

Methven’s Graeme Church from Adventure Balloons will be inflating a hot air balloon on the Saturday night of the three-night lighting event, which is being held to celebrate 100 years of EA Networks providing power to the district.

The applications may be inspected at the office of the Ashburton District Licensing Committee at 5 Baring Square West, Ashburton. Objections must be notified to The Secretary, Ashburton District Licensing Committee, PO Box 94, Ashburton by the date specified.

Ashburton District Council is partnering with the electricity lines company to host the activity, which will feature a trail of special effects light installations around the Tinwald Domain and the Plains Vintage and Railway Museum. The show will run on 22, 23 and 24 July, beginning at 5.30pm. Council Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said there was high excitement about the event, which was supposed to have been held last year but was postponed by covid. “We’re hoping to see hundreds of families walking around the open space at Tinwald and enjoying some pretty special lighting effects.

Council has received the following applications for new alcohol licences.

No objection to the renewal of a licence may be made in relation to a matter other than a matter specified in Section 131 of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012. A hot air balloon from Adventure Balloons will join the Glow in the Park celebration.

“The hot air balloon, on Saturday, will bring a different sort of glow and we’re thrilled to add Adventure Balloons to the line-up.” The trail of lights will include interactive displays and there will be places for selfies. Information panels will also tell EA Networks’ story, from its beginnings as the Ashburton Electric Power Board to

the present day as a provider of electricity lines and fibre-optic cables for internet. Food trucks will also be onsite. Mr Fabish said that the event was timed to coincide with the last weekend of the July school holidays and with a start time of 5.30pm, it would be dark enough for the lights to be at their best but not too late for young children to be out and about.

New garden under way at Ashburton Domain Regular visitors to the Ashburton Domain will have noticed a new garden under construction. A 70-metre strip along on the eastern edge of a path from the water feature to the domain playing fields has been dug up, composted, and rotary hoed ready for planting. The garden will mirror plantings on the western side of the path and serve to create an avenue entrance into this area of the domain. Buxus, hydrangeas, dahlias and delphiniums will be planted.

The picnic area and tables adjacent to the path is referred to as the Royal Lawn and is well used throughout the year, with access from the carpark, or via the domain’s path network. The area features a Tillia (European Lime) tree, planted on 4 August 2000 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The domain itself was planned when Ashburton was first laid out in 1864 and over the years it has been developed into a beautiful open space, accommodating trees and gardens, as well as swimming pools and a multitude of sports.

Get ready to have your say Mid Canty W

e’ve all got a lot to say when it comes to what’s happening in and around our district. And in a lot of cases, some of us have plenty to say. But perhaps the most important decision we make as Mid Cantabrians is now looming large as we rapidly approach local government elections later this year. And so, it’s critically important that the process is followed, and we get to the booths and make our voices heard. And that starts with the enrolment phase, which has begun over the past month. Take a gander around social media channels, discussions over a pint at the pub on a Friday night or even on the side of the street on any given day of the week and you’ll find commentary about the work of the

Matt Markham Ashburton District Council and what it’s doing for this district. As the saying goes, you traditionally only ever hear about the negative and right now it seems like the parlance coming from members of the community is stronger than ever. It’s an unfair sample of opinion at times, because behind all the frustration and disappointment from locals, there’s a lot of great work that’s done to ensure our community keeps ticking along day-to-day. In 2019, the Ashburton District had an overall voter turnout of just a tick over 55 per cent. At

face value that probably felt a little low at the time for such an expansive district with clearly a lot of opinions and thoughts and feelings on how things should be run.

Getting to the polling booths and ensuring the right people are there to do the job and help Ashburton, as a district, flourish is paramount.

That ranked us in the top 15 for turnout across New Zealand though – not a bad result given that there are 78 local authorities across the country. But surely, we can do better. If we want this district which we call home to continue to be a thriving, progressive region with opportunities at every corner then getting to the polling

from the woodwork, some we will know well, some we will need to get to know and understand. And just who puts their hand up and seeks election is always an interesting development in itself. There’s a lot set to happen over the coming three years as the district continues to expand and welcome new opportuni-

ties and having a driving force behind that who are dedicated to ensuring the best for the everyday Mid Cantabrian is key to it all being successful. So, grab that enrolment pack that’s been sitting on the bench since it arrived in the mail unopened, take out the pen and fill it out to ensure you get the chance to have your say on what’s happening in Mid Canterbury. It’s all well and good to sit back from the comfort of your home and fire pot shots left, right and centre and criticise at every turn, but you really only deserve that right if you’re willing to put pen to paper and have your say in shaping this district. Fifty-five point four per cent in 2019. Let’s shoot for the stars and aim for a 60 per cent turnout in 2022.

Suspension for Ta’avao All Blacks prop Angus Ta’avao has been suspended for three weeks after he was shown a red card in their second test loss to Ireland at the weekend. Ta’avao was sent off in the first half of the match, which All Blacks lost 23-12 in Dunedin, when he clattered head-first into Ireland centre Garry Ringrose’s face. World Rugby said the sanction could be reduced to two weeks if Ta’avao completes the governing body’s coaching intervention programme. Ta’avao admitted that he committed an act of foul play but maintained that a red card was not warranted due to the presence of mitigating factors. Having reviewed all the evidence, the committee applied the Head Contact Process and upheld the red card. On that basis, the committee deemed the act of foul play merited

a mid-range entry point of six weeks given the direction by World Rugby that “any act of foul play which results in contact with the head and/or the neck shall result in at least a midrange sanction.” Taking into account Ta’avao’s excellent disciplinary record and the mitigating factors under Regulation 17, the committee granted full mitigation of 50 per cent to three weeks, resulting in a sanction of three weeks. The committee also approved the player’s application under the Head Contact Process – Coaching Intervention Programme. If the coaching application is approved, the player’s sanction could be reduced by one week. Ta’avao has the right of appeal within 48 hours of the issuing of the full written decision. The All Blacks are due to face Ireland in the series decider on Saturday in Wellington.

Angus Ta’avao goes off due to injury and was red-carded at the same time.

Altrusa Club

Seventeen Altrusan members spent a day on the “Days for Girls”, an on-going New Zealand-wide Altrusa project. 211 shields were meticulously sewn, ready for sanitary products. These will be sent mostly to the Islands, but also to be distributed in New Zealand. As a social event we had an informative and enjoyable evening at the Ashburton Art Gallery, and Ashburton Museum, with thanks to Danielle and James, concluding with a convivial meal at Noble 600. We are financially supporting Breast Cancer Foundation Christchurch, as Ashburton women also regularly use this service. The June Foot Clinic had 29 clients plus a new client. There will be another clinic in July. Nola prepared a display of Royal memorabilia, magazines and knitted toys to celebrate the 70th Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth. Around thirty bags of much-appreciated books are exchanged fortnightly to Ashburton residents for Books on Wheels, working with the Ashburton Public Library.

end, but one game did go ahead. Jordy talked Paddy into playing the President Plate Final early morning, to get ahead of the weather. Jordy knew he was onto a good thing when the big fella turned up blurry-eyed and still wearing his PJs. A great game was played. Paddy turned one up after 9. Then Jordy went on a scoring spree, shooting 1 under for the next 6 holes and took the game on the 15th. A good fun game, only the last 3 holes were damp, and the best player won. Well done. Shortly after that game finished the course was closed for waterlogged greens so the rest of the day was a bit of a washout. This Saturday we have club champs qualifying round number 4. Stroke off the Blue tees. This is the round when the grades are set for the Champs, whatever your handicap is on Sunday morning is where you will be for the knockout rounds. Good luck to all. On Sunday we have a few pennants games. Shane and the Alex boys are at Rakaia against Tinwald. The Scratch games are at Temuka. The A team have a bye and the B team lock horns with Tinwald B. Also, at Temuka are the Patterson Boys. The pups are trying desperately to halt their slide and may have a good chance against Highfield. The old dogs are having to play without their Dutch talisman, but are hoping to wheel out a top gun reserve for their game against Tinwald. Have fun boys and behave! One story I forgot last week was from a couple of Brandon chaps who headed over for a game at Clearwater recently. We will change names to save modesty let’s just say Richie and Greig. No that’s too easy, let’s go for Mr M and Mr S. They played the first 9 very average, to say the least. Then on the par three 11th Mr S smashed his driver 147 metres and stuck it two foot from the pin. Wrote his name on the nearest the pin sheet and tapped in his two. Into the club for the presentations. The prize for the “LADIES” nearest the pin on 11 goes to “Miss” G S. After bit of rules searching and an impassioned speech on gender equality working all ways. Mr S is now the proud owner of a beautiful Yves Saint Lauren make up bag. Wonderful. That will do for now good golfing.

The various Club committees had brief meetings and then we had a few reminders of existing services; bottle tops and wine tops can be taken by Tony Adams and used spectacles by Roger Paterson rather than be wasted. And with a lot of covid and flu circulating right now, if anyone hears that a club member is unwell, please contact Robert Keeley so his team can reach out to them and see if they need help. President Manny Sim awarded ex-President Roger with a Resting Lion award, which is given to past presidents for the service – normally for the preceding year, but Roger stood for three years in total.

The meeting opened with the first welcome from our new President, Manny Sim. Ex-President Roger Paterson spoke about 2024 when it is hoped that we can host the District Convention as a fitting celebration of the Club’s 60th year. Roger is also investigating possible club project option/s to mark the 60th year. This month we had no guest speaker, and instead had two three-minute speeches from our members. Firstly, Ian Moore gave us a potted history of his brief stint in teaching followed by thirty years of dairy farming in South Taranaki; having to pull down a rotten house in Akaroa and rebuilding with lots

There was great excitement on the pistes this week with the team of 12 still abuzz from their win in Christchurch. At training Adelys remarked on the improvement he has seen with our players and is happy his advice is paying off. There is a lot more confidence in our members at having a go at shots they wouldn’t normally try. With the heavy rain in town on Saturday no-one turned up to play, but sometimes we are challenged with such weather during tournaments, let’s hope the weather gods look after us over the next few weeks. Next Sunday will see some of our members competing for the Bastille Day Trophy in Christchurch, and then we have the Club Singles the following week. August is busy with Canterbury Singles and Doubles hosted by our Club, and then a few members are going to Dunedin two weekends in a row for two separate Triples Tournaments. On Sunday morning, there was a break in the weather and we were able to have a working bee at the pistes with a good turnout of members. We spent two hours having a general clean-up, inside and out and then a few of us had a quick game, never let a chance go by! We welcome you to join us on Tuesday, Thursday and/or Saturday at 1pm, at 115 Racecourse Road. Equipment and tuition are available. (July school holidays). Ryan Gallagher (right) with his bronze medal for his effort in the Under 13 Boys’ Road Race at the South Island Schools’ Cycling event at the weekend.

Cyclists shine at South Island Schools’ event Matt Markham Cycling in Mid Canterbury continues to look in good hands for the future, following another round of excellent results from the South Island Schools’ Road Cycling Championships last weekend. More than 150 cyclists from around the mainland, representing more than 40 schools, made their way to the famed Ruapuna Motorsport Park on Saturday and Sunday for two days of competition. Cyclists competed in individual time trials, team time trials and the illustrious road race. And Mid Canterbury worked its way onto the podium during the course of the weekend. Hot-shot cyclist Maddi Lowry added another title to her already impressive list of achievements

There’s still everything to play for across all grades of Mid Canterbury Club hockey.

when she won the Under 20 Girls’ Road Race on Sunday, wearing the colours of Ashburton College. In testing conditions due to the weather around the Canterbury region on the weekend, Lowry went two places better than her third placing last year to win by a second, bettering her time from 12 months ago in the process. Wakanui School’s Ryan Gallagher also made the podium on Sunday when he finished third in the Under 13 Boys’ Road Race. In a sprint to the finishing line, only one second separated riders who finished second through to fifth, with Gallagher doing enough to hold on for the bronze medal. St Joseph’s student Eliza McKenzie was also in good form over the weekend. Competing in the Individual Time Trial on Saturday she claimed fourth placings in the Under 14 girls’ category, then produced another good ride on Sunday to finish seventh in a competitive road race.

Turf action heats up Matt Markham More than halfway through the final leg of the club season, Mid Canterbury Hockey’s division one and two competitions are painting very different pictures. With five of the nine weeks completed across the two grades for both men and women, it’s a one-horse race at the moment in Division One, while there’s still room for anything to happen in both of the division two grades as well. Wakanui Black have stolen a march on their rivals in men’s division one with four wins and a draw next to their name to see them four points clear on

the standings from club-mates, Wakanui White. They battled it out on Tuesday night at the NBS Hockey Turf with the White side emerging victorious with a 5-1 victory. The other match in the grade from the night was a one-sided affair as well, with Tinwald overcoming Allenton 5-0. In Women’s Division One, it’s Methven who have broken away from the pack. They’re six points clear in the Judy Rennie Tray with four wins and a draw from their five games to continue their unbeaten season after taking out the Doig Cup with three from three in the opening stage of the year. They claimed a 3-0 win on Monday night against Wakanui Black, while the other match in the round saw a win by default

to Tinwald over Wakanui Purple. It’s a little tighter in women’s division two action, although Tinwald still holds a healthy lead over Methven. There were goals galore last Friday night in the grade, with Tinwald winning 7-3 over Wakanui while Methven fell to a heavy defeat, losing to Hampstead 8-0. In men’s division two it’s really tight, with Wakanui holding a slender one-point lead over Tinwald and Hampstead Lowcliffe only two further points back in the Hyde Trophy. Hampstead Lowcliffe moved themselves into contention with a 3-2 win over Tinwald on Sunday, while Allenton caused an upset when they downed the competition leaders Wakanui 5-3 in the second match.

Time to get moving in Premier netball Matt Markham It’s moving day in Mid Canterbury Premier Netball. With week one of the championship round fast becoming a distant memory, tonight’s week two clashes offer the opportunity to consolidate positions and further momentum, as the business end of the season looms at a rapid rate. And while there’s still plenty of netball to be played post-tonight, what happens on the court this evening could have a major bearing on who lands where when it comes to finding finalists for this year’s competitions.

to get a win on the board after week one losses. In Premier 3, Hampstead B, who notched up a big win last week will take on Ashburton College B to open the night before Hampstead U18 and Methven Humm play the middle game. Ashburton College 10A who were also victorious last week, will play the winless United B in the final game of the night and look to steal a march on the standings.

Tonight, Premier 1 throws up a couple of intriguing match-ups. Plenty of eyes will be on the Methven and Mt Somers clash to open the proceedings. Mt Somers surprised everyone by beating Methven when they met last month, fresh off their elevation into the top grade. They’ll be keen to repeat the dose again this evening, but a fired-up Methven will want to try and lock themselves down as the leading contender for at least fourth spot in the competition with a victory, ahead of some massive match-ups in the coming weeks. Competition favourites, and the only unbeaten side across all competitions this season, Celtic will look to consolidate their spot at the top of the standings when they play Southern in the middle

Thursday night key match-ups Hampstead v United – Premier 1, Game 3 – 8.15pm

Two sides who, at times, will feel like they’ve underperformed this season. But the underlying factor is that at their absolute best, they’re capable of beating any team in this competition. The challenge for those in Premier 1 outside favourites, Celtic, is trying to stay as close to them on the standings as is possible. Do that and you’re a chance of finals berth and with that in mind, these two sides – who both picked up wins in week one of the round will be out to make it two tonight and keep within arm’s reach of the green machine.

match, before a classic match between United and Hampstead to round out the night. In Premier 2, week one winners Rakaia and Methven Shearmac will do battle in the middle game of the night. Both sides started the season in Premier 3 and advanced up the

rankings, while the final clash of the evening in the grade sees Ashburton College A and Allenton do battle in what is sure to be a tight encounter between the two sides. Methven B and Celtic B round out the action in Premier 2, locking horns in the opening game of the night, with both sides looking

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You don’t always have to know what you’re doing, or how to do it, to successfully execute your purpose. Intention comes with its own intelligence and it will serve you well today. Head on into the thing! TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): To focus on your favourite interest to the exclusion of all else isn’t exactly healthy, but greatness is often tinged with such obsession and achieved through a process of imbalances righted. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The thing that gets your back up isn’t all bad. Anger can be a creative resource, or it can be a distraction keeping you from more important work or, even more important, fun. So, which is it? CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You are moving ever-forward, driven by a curiosity, need, responsibility, loyalty and ambition. It’s good fuel, but you also require energy provided by proper nutrition. Look into new choices in that regard. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’re a magnet for talented people, and you spot them even when they are not performing the thing they’re talented at. Your own talents are activated and grow in the atmosphere you create together. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It helps to have an awareness of the price paid by those who went before. Mentally touching on that history will shield you from vulgarity and idiocy common today. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’re known to politely decline invitations, and now you’ll take that skill to the next level by saying no while letting people know how much you like them, even if you can’t do all they want. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You make plans, and you stick to them. The same loyalty and followthrough applies whether orchestrating for yourself or for others. Integrity is a 360-degree virtue. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Explaining has a way of complicating things. If there’s a lot to explain, maybe there’s something wrong with the procedure itself. Step back, and ask yourself if there’s a simpler way to accomplish the aim. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Words are organising tools. Wordless ideas are too. Work from both directions. Get your head straight by talking or writing things out, and you’ll get your words straight by thinking things through. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): A voice is a powerful tool. Making the most of it is a responsibility most people are not aware enough to claim. Seize the opportunity, educate yourself on pressing issues and choose your words carefully. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Your idols keep you sharp, but so do your rivals. Today, you may find your rivals the more motivating of the two, as the fuel they provide will be immediate, readily available and abundantly flowing.
