Happy 105th birthday Doris Daniel Alvey

If you told Ashburton’s oldest woman when she was 21 that she would be alive at 105 she would have laughed. But here Doris Wakelin is having celebrated her 105th birthday on Sunday. As we walked into her cosy little flat, true to form Wakelin was watching her favourite show, The Chase, hosted by Bradley Walsh, her celebrity idol. “I love Bradley, he is a crack-up and he gets carried away giggling, I told him last year that I would see him when I’m 105.” While Bradley did not hold up his end of the bargain, she had a good birthday nevertheless. Wakelin celebrated the occasion with her family at the Ashburton RSA on Sunday. “It was really good, 30 of my family came down from the North Island, there were balloons and cake, and it was a really good time,” she said. Wakelin had a star-studded line-up of birthday cards, from the Governor-General, the Prime Minister, and the Queen. As for presents, she only wanted things she could eat. “I have enough stuff,” Wakelin said. She has always been a Mid Canterbury girl, much of it spent on farms across the district, up to the Rakaia and down to the Rangitata and inland to the mountains, Wakelin has seen it all. She has six children and 13 grandchildren, but she has lost count of the rest. “I can remember the grandchildren, but the rest I lose track of.” We all want to know what the secret is to her longevity, her response? “You just take every day as it comes, to me there is always something coming. You should always look ahead.” Apart from a couple of caregivers, Wakelin still lives independently, cooking her dinner and doing the washing. “I’ve got my daughter and she only lives down the road and visits regularly.” For now Wakelin will continue to live life one day at a time. We’ll see you next year Doris.

You just take every day as it comes, to me there is always something coming. You should always look ahead.

Happy Birthday: Age is no barrier for 105-year-old Doris Wakelin, with her birthday card from the Queen.

Do the right thing for Kirsty Kirsty Bentley timeline

Matt Markham Someone out there knows the truth. We urge them to do the right thing and finally come forward – if not for themselves, then for Kirsty and all those who loved her. A simple, but powerful message from New Zealand Police yesterday as they shone the spotlight once again on one of the country’s most notorious and puzzling murders – the killing of Ashburton teenager, Kirsty Bentley. Police yesterday announced in a written statement that they were offering a $100,000 reward for information about the murder of the 15-yearold after she went missing on New Year’s Eve in 1998. And the man in charge of the investigation has now, for the first time, publicly revealed his theory on just what type of person he believes they are looking for in relation to the murder. “Police have gone to great lengths to explore all possible scenarios and investigative leads and, even after more than 20 years, we remain committed to holding the offenders, or offenders to account,” detective inspector, Greg Murton said. “That’s why today we’re offering up to $100,000 for material information or evidence leading to the identity and conviction of the person, or people responsible for her death.” Shortly after the statement was released, media outlet Stuff published a telling interview with detective Murton in which he believed Kirsty was raped and murdered by a stranger, who dragged her from the street that fateful evening. “I think (the killer) is someone on the walking route – that would be my most likely scenario … and there’s some good suspects there,” Murton said in the interview. That damning revelation turns focus right away from two men, who for many years, were deemed at the centre of all investigations. That’s Kirsty’s father, Sid, and her brother John. In

Police are offering a $100,000 reward for information about the murder of then 15-yearold Kirsty Bentley after she went missing on New Year’s Eve in 1998. 2018, police suggested it was unlikely the pair were involved in the disappearance and murder of Kirsty, but plenty of outside investigations still homed in on the pair. “Sid and John were legitimately looked at very closely for obvious reason … and there are still questions remaining about Sid’s changing of his story.” Murton said that police had evidence which showed that the person they were looking for was either a cannabis user or grower, but he wouldn’t elaborate any further on what that meant. Kirsty left her family home on South Street around 3pm on New Year’s Eve in 1998 and was never seen by her family and friends again. She had taken her dog, Abby, for a walk in the nearby Ashburton River. Police were alerted to her disappearance later that evening, but it wasn’t until the next day that the dog

was found tied to a tree on the walking route, with Kirsty’s underwear nearby. Her body was found 18 days later, partially buried almost 60km from her home in a small plantation of pine trees on the northern hills of the Rakaia Gorge. Numerous special investigations and rewards have been undertaken over the years since to try and bring closure to the case, but none have been successful in either a conviction or a confession. Murton said someone out there knew the truth and that it was time for them to come forward. He added that immunity from prosecution may be considered for any accomplices and that the reward would remain on offer for six months. Anyone with information was asked to contact police via 105 and reference Operation Kirsty, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

December 31, 1998 – 3pm: Kirsty leaves her family home on South Street in Ashburton to take dog, Abby for a walk next to the nearby Ashburton River. She is reported missing by family several hours later. January 1 – 1999 – A search and rescue operation is launched at 8am, two hours later Abby, the dog, is found tied to a tree on the river bed in an area searched the previous night. Kirsty’s underwear is also located nearby. January 17, 1999 – Kirsty’s body is found in a small pine tree plantation on the northern side of the Rakaia Gorge, partially buried. January 25 – 1999 – Kirsty is farewelled at a funeral at St Stephen’s Anglican Church in Ashburton with between 500 and 700 people in attendance. February to March, 1999 – Police offer a $50,000 reward for information resulting in the conviction of the person responsible for Kirsty’s murder. The reward was withdrawn a year later after failing to bring any new information. 1999-2015 – Numerous lines of investigations are both opened and closed as police continue to try and piece together who and why Kirsty was murdered. 2014 – Detective inspector Greg Murton takes over the case, stating that until it was resolved the investigation would remain open. 2015 – Kirsty’s father, Sid dies after a battle with cancer, renewing interest in the case. 2017 – Reports of police investigating the possibility of Russell John Tully, who murdered two staff members at the Ashburton Work and Income office in 2014, may have been involved. Police later announced they had eliminated Tully for their enquiries. 2018 – Detective inspector Murton announced there had been advances in DNA testing that he hoped could lead to a break in the case. 2018 – Police suggest that Kirsty’s father, Sid and her brother John were not involved in her disappearance or murder. April 2020 – An investigative news piece, dubbed Killer Blow is released including never publicly seen before photos and imagery from the initial investigation. Again, it renews public interest in the case. July 25, 2022 – Police offer a $100,000 reward for material information of evidence leading to the identity of the conviction of the person, or people responsible for Kirsty’s death. July 25, 2022 – Detective inspector Murton goes on record stating that he believes that Kirsty was raped and murdered by a stranger who dragged her from the street that fateful afternoon.

In a construction zone Daniel Alvey

Trevors Road residents are wanting answers on why their street has been left a construction site for months by Strowan Fields, a property development across the street. Resident Tim Jellyman said the road had been a construction site for six months now and he just wants to see the road cones and fences gone. “It’s an absolute mess, I see them working on the internal roads first before our one (Trevors Road)” “I wish they would finish what they started out here first. “We can’t park cars on the street because it’s too narrow and the gravel gets flicked up.” Along the west side of Trevors Road there are 24 potholes in the 400m stretch. Strowan Fields business partner Paul Cunneen said he was unaware of any upset residents, but if there were any problems caused by the development he

Trevors Road resident Tim Jellyman inspects one of 24 potholes along his street. PHOTO DANIEL ALVEY would look into them. “I want to keep an open dialogue.” Cunneen also was not aware of any potholes until he visited

the site on Thursday last week. “They all appear to be on the line of a water pipe,” Cunneen said, adding that he was unsure whether it would be Ashburton

District Council’s job or his to fix the potholes. Trevors Road has been on the council’s radar for repairs since last year, but were delayed because of the development. “Trevors Road was on last year’s programme to be resealed due to the condition of the road, however the work was delayed because of the subdivision development,” Ashburton District Council infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann said. “With heavy construction vehicles travelling over the road, the road has deteriorated further, particularly during and after the recent rain events. “Our pothole repair crew will be in Ashburton town today (July 22) and they will repair the potholes on Trevors Road, and once the development is completed, seal repairs will be carried out and a reseal will be applied,” McCann said adding that the council had not received a completion date from the developer. Cunneen said the section of the subdivision that lines Trevors Road is due to be completed in September, one month after its original completion date.

THREE WATERS

Flooded with submissions Jonathan Leask The Ashburton District Council is calling for a five-year pause to the Three Waters Reforms. There have been estimates of there being over 70,000 submissions being received on the Water Services Entities Bill, and thousands of those will have requested to speak to the Parliamentary select committee that will hear submissions. Council chief executive Hamish Riach and Mayor Neil Brown both signed the council’s submission and have asked to speak to it. While a huge number of sub-

missions have been filed on the bill, what impact they garner is the big question. “It is hard to know whether the Government will truly hear these concerns and make major changes,” Riach said. “All we can do is express our view and advocate our position through the legislative process.” Riach said the council’s submission focused on expressing its and the community’s concerns at the reform. The submission reinforces its opposition to the reforms, as they are currently proposed, and suggest that the reform process should be paused for up to five years to let the new regulator, Taumata Arowai, settle in to its role. The Gore District Council is going a step further than Ashburton

by asking the Government to halt the Three Waters reform and is calling for a national referendum in its submissions. Riach said the Ashburton council had not considered the Gore council’s position or a call for a national referendum. Brown said among council’s concerns were the future costs of three waters services for ratepayers and how the new entity will follow the council’s planning and land development ambitions, and ownership. “We want to keep a level of control over water assets that we have built up and invested in wisely over the years.” The Selwyn District Council’s submission also highlighted grave concerns. As it has some of the newest infrastructure in New Zealand

and have invested heavily it believes under the four entity model its communities will “subsidise many others who have chosen not to, nor had the ability to invest”. Selwyn also said the proposed council shareholding is “ownership in name only….and is present for political expedience only”, while also raising concerns on the absence of clarity on debt and assets transfer.

Nominations slow

Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown says he arrived back from a few weeks off to find his job being advertised, but as of Monday no candidates have put their names forward for the local body elections. Nominations opened on July 15 and will close on August 12. Candidates can be put forward to be mayor or one of the nine councillors as well as five Methven Community Board members, and six Braided Rivers Community Trust members. There is also the two seats in the Mid Canterbury Opakihi ward on Environment Canterbury where incumbents Ian Mackenzie and John Sunckell have both stated they are intending to restand.

Boil water The Methven township and Mount Somers boil water notices were lifted on Sunday. Following the heavy rainfall during the week the notices were put in place on July 19. The boil water notice remains in place on the MethvenSpringfield water supply, with water being tested on a daily basis to monitor for harmful bacteria.

Bridge lights EA Networks is undertaking street light repairs on the State Highway 1 Ashburton Hakatere River bridge. They start on Sunday night and there will be a single lane vehicle restriction with temporary traffic lights in place each night from 10pm to 6am, until Thursday.

Face masks The Ashburton District Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health - Manatū Hauora, is giving boxes of medical masks to families in the district at no cost. People can collect a box of 50 masks for their family or two boxes if a household has six or more people from EA Networks Centre, Ashburton Public Library, Ashburton Museum, Ashburton District Council, Ashburton Event Centre, Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Methven, and Safer Mid Canterbury.

As the sun set over the weekend, Glow in the Park lit up Ashburton for thousands to see. The lightshow transformed the Tinwald Domain and Plains Museum in a joint show between Ashburton District Council and EA Networks. The Plains Museum was brought to life, with the fire station showing off its lights and sirens, and banging and clanging from the blacksmiths immersing visitors in a different time zone. Travelling around into the domain and the park had been brought to life with music and a hot air balloon on Saturday night. Well placed ultra violet (UV) lights meant those who chose to have their faces painted glowed in the light. As a free event it was deemed a tremendous overall success, and all involved hope it returns next year. PHOTOS DANIEL ALVEY

with Pat Deavoll

Award winner, looking for a way to help farmers By Pat Deavoll The Keith Andrews Innovation Award winner at the 2022 NZ Groundspreaders Awards, Jon Jackson, is all too familiar with the innovator’s journey of trial and error. The Ashburton agricultural contractor (Jackson Spreading) is aware of the knockers and naysayers, but he rose above all of that, because of his desire to do things better, smarter, and more efficiently. This drove him to realise his vision and improve things for the benefit of all in the ground spread industry. Jackson’s wife’s grandmother cut out an article in the newspaper about a new machine being developed that utilised two key technologies to get more out of fertiliser and reduce losses to the environment. He flew north to take a look, worked with the company to meet ground spreader demands and is now an ambassador for the technology, promoting it to his peers and farmers alike.

PHOTO SUPPLIED Jackson is highly regarded by his fellow ground spreaders for his selfless ambition and his knowledge. His expertise is of immense value to the ground spreading sector. So why did you win the award? “For innovation, so we used crop spec cameras which look at the rate of fertiliser that our trucks apply. “It decides how much nitrogen is in the grass and then applies it so that there is no wastage. “Then we have a machine called Spkiey which detects the urine patches and harvests the nitrogen out of these. This reduces leaching so it doesn’t get down into the water table. “These are two very new pieces of technology that not too many people have tried.” The crop spec cameras have been around for a wee while, he said. They are mostly used on crops and Jackson needed to do a

trial on New Zealand pasture. He did this with Agritech and a whole bunch of partners and got a peer review paper out of it. “We were the first organisation to use these cameras on pasture commercially– that was pretty cool!” Spkiey has been around for a while and just needed someone to take it up. The first machines weren’t good enough to be commercial machines, Jackson said. Now he has a commercial machine which is high capacity. “We have had the fertilising spreader trucks now for nine years and pretty much with N-caps and the government enforcing its rules and regulations (they keep moving the goal posts) we were looking for a way to help the farmers.

Local high country shepherd represents New Zealand Pat Deavoll High country shepherd Taylor Bird is the only Kiwi in a field of nine Australians to compete in the finals of the Cobber Challenge Relay dog trials to be held in Queensland, Australia. The 19-year-old’s Team Hakatere Station is made up of four dogs – two huntaways and two heading dogs. “At Hakatere Station we run 12,000 ewes, 800 cattle, and an angus bull stud up in the mountains near Mt Somers. I’ve been working here for a year with five staff,” Bird said. “At my last job, I started the team. These are my four running dogs. I have another four young dogs that are doing a bit of work. All my dogs come to work with me every day; they’re basically with me 24/7. “The huntaways are the noise makers, and as their name suggests, they push stock away; whereas the heading dogs, they bring the stock to you.” His dogs are called Moss, Tom, Kate, and Bruno. No matter where you run Moss, you have full confidence that he’ll bring the stock to you, Bird said. “Tom has always had a passion for work. There is nothing else he wants to be doing; he’ll fall over before he stops working. “Kate is a yard dog plus she does some paddock work. The heavy hitter on the team, she has a lot of punch and can move anything. “Bruno can go anywhere and do anything. He’s a real natural who was easy to train. He’s my main mustering dog, and the one that gets me out of sticky situations most of the time.”

In previous years, the Cobber Challenge has showcased the efforts of individual working dogs, but this year’s challenge celebrates the teamwork that goes into running a farm. The new relay format recognises that farmers often work dogs

in teams, or pick certain dogs to do different tasks, like mustering mobs of cattle or pushing sheep through yards. Farmers have nominated teams of two, three, or four dogs. Each day of the three-week competition, the farmer will select

Students turn out to save the day Lili Haydon

Lincoln university students are giving a helping hand to Mid Canterbury farmers. Lincoln University student, Caitlin Rhodes, from the Handy Landys club at Lincoln University, is doing her best to help out the rural sector during tough times, along with a dozen other members. “The purpose of our club is to support the agricultural industry that our members are passionate about,” Rhodes said. Chairman, Hamish Goatley said the initiative started after the Kaikoura earthquakes. Now the team of around 15 members have done a dozen trips to help out farmers in need. The club supports farmers by pulling up their sleeves, and getting their hands dirty. And it’s a win-win for both the students and farmers. “Many of our members are studying agriculture from farms and are keen to meet more people within the industry by volunteering,” Rhodes said. The club is funded through Lincoln University Students’ Association (LUSA). Last year, the club worked alongside the Student Volunteer Army at Lincoln cleaning up farms that had been affected by the floods in Canterbury. For the flood clean-up, the club did five separate expeditions which helped eight different farmers. Last week was the first week back for the Lincoln students, which coincided with the floods. According to Goatley they have already had a few requests from farmers, and are

Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There is no shortcut. The stages are often extremely awkward. It will feel false to pretend to be something you’re not, which is precisely why transformation is only for the brave (which you are!) TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You are more resolute and implacable than any opposition you could encounter. If they are stronger, wait until a moment of weakness. If they are faster, let them tire themselves out. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): People are serving their own interests as they cast you in a role, decide how to see you and predict who you are. Their opinions will be only very slightly useful in your crafting of who you want to be. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): If all the world is a stage, today you’re the lighting director. You set a mood, direct attention by spotlighting important things and convey expectations by bringing it brightly up or quietly down. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You have cultivated an ability to see yourself from a distance. This opens you to a wider range of possibilities. Objectivity is a cornerstone of sophistication and maturity. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Humour accelerates relationships. Communication, connection, and trust happen in a smiling breath. Those who laugh together are on common ground. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): When things start to go awry and questions pour into your mind, let them. Don’t bother answering, either – there’s no time. Get to work clearing the obstacles, and let the questions answer themselves. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): There’s no shortage of disagreeable ideas, though insulting their endorsers with an opposing opinion holds no appeal. With nothing to prove, you’ll forgo 100 arguments to save energy for what matters. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You make people a little uncomfortable, and that’s a good thing. Don’t rush to ease the tension or you’ll spoil the opportunity for all to try harder, raise the level and be the best version of themselves. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The current obstacle between you and what you want is basically immaterial. You’ll be surprised how little force it takes to push through. Like a bully, this thing has no power beyond your fear of it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Between you and the next thing, there’s a gap – an invitation to a leap of faith. Having no faith is fine, too. Consider engineering, aeronautics, wire-walking... there’s more than one way to bridge this. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You thought you’d learned from a mistake, but now you’re back at a place that looks suspiciously similar, and with the urge to repeat the unfruitful actions of the past! It’s a matter of the lesson being a little deeper than it looks.

Birmingham 2022 – bring it on

W

akey, wakey. The Commonwealth Games are about to start. Come on now, pull those blankets off. Forget those icy cold days we’re battling at the moment and start to feel the buzz that is – or should be – Birmingham 2022. Because on Thursday the latest rendition of the Comm Games gets under way in the west Midlands city in England and, numbers-wise at least, it’ll again be a big deal. The Games will actually be the largest sporting event in the UK since the London 2012 Olympic Games. There’ll be 72 nations and territories competing, with about 6500 athletes and team officials taking part. They’ll do their bit in 19 sports, and eight para sports, making it the biggest sports programme ever for a Commonwealth Games.

Daryl Holden And there will be a special bull running around, too, but don’t be alarmed. Perry is the Birmingham Games’ official mascot, a multi-coloured bull having been designed by a 10-year-old. And it looks like it, too. But, hey, we’re not here to poke fun at some poor kid’s drawing ability. This is a Games’ countdown, trying to build up interest in an event that seems to lose some of its lustre and appeal every four years it comes around. It’s been no different this year, too. It’s sort of crept up on us, especially in recent weeks where the demise of the All Blacks has

captured much of the nation’s interest. Just ask Ian Foster. He knows all about that. But there are some things to look forward to in the July 28 to August 8 spectacular.

We should again return with a bagful or two of medals because this is a competition where we should, at the very least, expect to hold our own in numerous sports.

New Zealand will be there, of course, represented by 233 athletes, competing in 19 sports and two para sports. Our most capped athletes are lawn bowler Val Smith and gymnast Misha Koudinov, who are heading to their fifth games. Maggie Squire, a diver, will be the youngest at 16, while at the

should, at the very least, expect to hold our own in numerous sports. We’ll all have our favourites to follow and I’ve got mine. I’ll be interested to see how our White Ferns’ cricketers, so disappointing in the one-day women’s world cup in New Zealand a few months ago, will fare under their

new coach in what’ll be the first women’s Twenty20 event at a Commonwealth Games. I’ll also enjoy seeing veteran triathlete, 40-year-old Andrea Hansen (nee Hewitt), in her fourth Commonwealth Games and her first as a mum, having given birth to a daughter just last year. And a hot tip to watch, an outsider few have probably heard of? Look out for cyclist Ally Wollaston, one of the new breed of riders about to make their mark internationally. In fact, Wollaston is already doing that, competing in the women’s first Tour de France Femmes professional road race before heading to Birmingham. She’s a rare talent, which is why she’s been named to ride both on the road and the track in Birmingham. Just watch this Kiwi girl fly.

O’Reilly claims second Darren DeFilippi Memorial

The enormity of consecutive victories in the Darren DeFilippi Memorial was not lost on Sarah O’Reilly when she took out the time-honoured race at Addington on Friday night. O’Reilly backed up her win in the feature event with Fighting Fire in 2021 by driving the Brent Borcoskie-trained The Bloss to win the 2022 edition. Though she had experienced it before, the feeling of winning the race honouring a talented horseman, which is highly respected and sought after each season by junior drivers, was not lost on O’Reilly. “It is just amazing to win it again, it means a lot,” the junior driver told Harness Racing Unhinged. “It is even special just to drive in this race.” Though The Bloss had plenty of support with punters, O’Reilly admitted she didn’t go onto the track expecting to take out the Darren DeFilippi Memorial again. “I didn’t really expect it this year, but the horse was so good.” “We got away quickly like I hoped and just a perfect run.” “It is always great just to be in this race and to win it is just so good.” O’Reilly had The Bloss in front by the first bend in the 27th running of the Darren DeFilippi Memorial. The junior driver then found a perfect trip in the trail for the mare, behind noted front-runner Prince Teka. The Bloss and O’Reilly scored

New base under way

Mid Canterbury returnee, John Morrison, claimed the first training win out of his new base at Addington on Friday night when Harrison held tough against a good field of pacers. Morrison, who formerly trained out of West Melton has relocated back to the region and is training out of the Ashburton Raceway, with Harrison getting the new stable under way. It kickstarted a big weekend for the young horseman who also picked up his 250th driving win with Majestic Rollon for fellow Raceway trainer, Brent White on Sunday.

MC Squared again Barhill trotter MC Squared made it two wins at Addington for the month on Sunday when he dashed up the lane to win impressively for trainer, Michael Heenan and driver, Samantha Ottley. The son of Superfast Stuart, who produced his first Group One winner on Saturday night in Queensland with Wee Man Trouble, picked up his maiden win at the start of the month and then backed it up with another on Sunday for his big band of owners.

Mid Canterbury galloper, Lord Darci went within a whisker of claiming the feature race at Oamaru on Sunday. The talented runner just missed claiming the lion’s share of the $35,000 Oamaru Cup winner’s purse when missing out to Summer Festival in an epic length of the straight battle. Trained by Bevan and Robyn Wilson, Lord Darci was one of two placegetters for the stable on Sunday with debutant Decision Time running a handy race for third in the two-year-old event.

Southern and Methven eye up Watters Cup glory By Matt Markham and Steve Devereux Methven and Southern will go to battle for Mid Canterbury Rugby supremacy this week. The two sides will battle it out for the 2022 instalment of the Watters Cup this weekend after final-round victories, both kept and lifted them into the top two of this year’s reduced competition. Southern did what most expected and did enough to get over the top of a determined Rakaia side, but Methven had to wait until the 75th minute to seal their place in the final in another epic encounter with Celtic, with the hosts winning 11-10. It sets up a monster clash this weekend with both Methven and Southern having recorded wins over each other during the pool play stages of the season, with Southern winning under lights out at Hinds back in April before Methven were too good at home last month. Neutral territory will be on offer for the big dance though, with the final to be played at the Ashburton Showgrounds on a massive day of finals rugby for the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union. Out at Rakaia on Saturday, it was the hosts who set the ball rolling. A try, in the third minute to Angus Mackenzie put Rakaia in front, and a stunned Southern

Short and sharp Southern 24 (Matt McAtamney

2, Mason Briant, Makasiale Kauvanua tries; Thomas Middleton 2 conv.) beat Rakaia 13 (Angus Mackenzie, Thomas Whittaker tries, Whittaker pen). Methven 11 (Tait Chisman try, Thomas Reekie 2 pen) beat Celtic 10 (Kaydis Hona try, Nathan McCloy conv, pen). Final Standings: Methven 21, Southern 19, Celtic 15, Rakaia 5

With time almost up on the clock, and just one point in the game, Methven continue to pile the pressure on the Celtic defensive line on the weekend. PHOTO METHVEN RUGBY were forced to regroup early and settle into their work. Their hard work was rewarded 15 minutes later when Mason Briant added another try to his tally for the season, before what appeared to be right on half-time, Matthew McAtamney did the same to extend the lead to 14-3. It wasn’t the last play though, and a penalty for Rakaia saw Thomas Whittaker put the ball through the sticks to make it an eight-point ball game heading into the sheds. A try early in the second half for Makasiale Kauvanua gave Southern some breathing room, and when McAtamney scored his second for the day with 20 minutes to go, Southern were in full control. Rakaia, to their credit, again never stopped trying, and a try by Whittaker with eight minutes left on the clock brought things closer, but not close enough to

see Rakaia run down their rivals in the final stages. Meanwhile, out at Methven, sometimes in rugby you’ll find two teams hitting form at the right time, and so evenly matched that a result is impossible to confidently predict. That situation has most certainly applied to Methven and Celtic this year; over three torrid hours of intense, head-to-head rugby, and the difference in the end? One solitary point. But that’s all it takes to win, and so Methven heads into the Watters Cup grand final, while the Celtic boys hang up the boots and think of that one missed tackle, that one attacking opportunity missed. On Saturday, in the shadow of the mountain but under brilliant sunshine, it was the home team that started better, pushing hard across the paddock, and it was a little against the run of play that

Nathan McCloy was able to slot a penalty to put Celtic on the board first. Methven continued to search for bigger rewards, several times kicking into the corners to get their lineout drive going, but in what turned into a feature of the match for both sides, the defensive lines were severely bent, but held firm. It took 30 minutes before Thomas Reekie took a successful penalty shot for Methven, and then his side turned up the volume even more, but again the Celtic defence resisted, and halftime came with the scores locked at 3-3. Reekie added another penalty early in the second half, but then it was Celtic’s turn to go on the attack. Elyh McKibbin, whose lack of game time accentuates the quality firepower Celtic has out wide, produced an excellent jinking

run down the right flank to get his team into the opposition 22, and a few phases later it was the ever-present Kaydis Hona who crashed over, and McCloy added the extras. Twenty minutes of trench warfare followed, as the big ball runners and twinkle-toed backs on both sides hurled themselves into the attack, only to be met with some bone-crunching tackles you could feel on the sidelines; there would be some bruised bodies around a few workplaces this week. Osea Baisagale was repeatedly lining up for another powerful run for the home side, and when the ball went out to the backs Xavier Bartlett’s lightning sidesteps were a constant threat, but still the green line held, and McCloy’s booming punts took Celtic out of the danger area several times. The pressure of the occasion was surely responsible for more little errors – from both teams – that they had committed in recent games, and halted many a promising attack. Early on the scrums had been a dead-even stalemate, with neither pack surrendering an inch, but with only five minutes on the clock, Methven won a scrum penalty inside the Celtic 22. They opted for a new scrum, clean ball gave the backs another opportunity, and this time they took it, with the fresh legs of Tait Chisman getting him over in a tangle of tacklers right in the corner. The conversion was astray, but it didn’t matter; that one solitary point advantage was on the board, and Methven were headed for the big dance.

Top points scores Thomas Middleton (Southern) 46, Raitube Vasurakuta (Celtic) 35, Thomas Whittaker (Rakaia) 33, Thomas Reekie (Methven) 28, Nathan McCloy (Celtic) 27.

Hampstead, Methven into Senior B final Matt Markham They made the tough decision to step away from senior rugby earlier this year, but Hampstead will be out to repay the faith to their club this weekend when they shoot for Senior B rugby silverware on finals day. The blue-and-golds will lock horns with Methven in the final act of the Senior B competition for the season at the Ashburton Showgrounds this weekend after they both won their way through

to the final in semi-final action on Saturday. Hampstead were forced to fight hard for their victory against a brave Mt Somers side, coming out on top of a brutal encounter 23-21. The match could have gone either way, with an 85th minute try to Mt Somers setting up a chance at a draw and extra time, but the conversion attempt sailed wide. They opened the scoring with a penalty to Arthur Chapman-Cohan but Hampstead, in front of their home crowd, were quickly into their work, scoring through Matthew Iakopo and Tuva’a Asiata, with Junior Esae adding the extras on both occasions.

That could have easily seen the hosts get the wind behind their backs and run away with the match, but as they have all season, Mt Somers refused to yield

self to see Hampstead up 23-16 with five minutes to play. After an extended period of time after the 80-minute mark, Te Ana Proffit found his way

and a penalty, a try and a conversion from Chapman-Cohan brought them right back into the match. Esae had his range locked in with the boot and added three more penalties, while Chapman-Cohan kicked another him-

over the line to give Mt Somers a chance, but his try was unconverted and Hampstead advanced through. Up in Methven, things were a little easier as the home side ran away with their match against Celtic 36-16.

Tries from Sam Wright, Sam Peek, Fa’aitu Tuamoheloa, Sam Lock and Hayden Walker as well as a penalty try and two conversions from the boot of Louis McDonald saw them home, with Celtic only able to respond with tries from Jayden Faunge and Isileli Ula. Methven advance through to the final as the winners of the Michael Duff Memorial for the first round of the season, while Hampstead have their hands on the Centennial Mug for the second round of play. But neither will matter much to either side if they don’t add the Second Grade Cup to sit alongside this weekend.

Nawai helps Fiji qualify for netball World Cup Matt Markham There’s been a hint of Mid Canterbury flavour to the Oceania World Cup netball qualifiers in Suva over the weekend. Former Methven club player Kelera Nawai was a member of the Fijian side who qualified through to the World Cup by finishing second at the tournament played over the course of the weekend. Nawai, who two years ago was plucked from obscurity and placed in the Te Wananga O Raukawa Pulse side last year before signing with the Mainland Tactix for this year’s ANZ Premiership, featured during the

tournament for the side. It’s been a tough time for Fijian netball in recent years, but qualifying for the World Cup is hoped to change the path for the side, known as the Pearls, after a good weekend of tournament play. With the top two sides qualifying to head to the World Cup in South Africa, the Pearls started in the right fashion by beating Papua New Guinea before a big loss to Tonga. They came out on the right side of a tight tussle with Samoa to win 45-43 to put one foot on the plane to the World Cup, but a victory against the Cook Islands in the final act of the tournament was enough to secure their position. Nawai was injured in the match against Tonga after colliding with a defender. Nawai was born in Fiji and

Kelera Nawai in Methven colours. selected for the Pearls national team while still at school, she

played for them during the 2019 World Cup. She first came to New Zealand on a scholarship to St Andrews College in Christchurch in 2014 and has been involved in netball in Canterbury for a number of years. She was a member of the 2017 Mainland Beko team, and was also a training partner for the Tactix the same year. The Fiji Pearl international married in 2018 and had a baby boy before returning to New Zealand the following year to join her husband, renowned Mid Canterbury rugby player, Nete Caucau. Nawai is on the move again for the next ANZ Championship too, having been secured by the Northern Stars to help stem the loss of the legendary Anna Harrison who has retired from netball.

Mooar a casualty of ABs fallout Matt Markham Former Mid Canterbury rugby representative Brad Mooar has become one of the casualties of the fallout from the All Blacks historic series loss to the Irish earlier this month. Mooar, who played 26 games for Mid Canterbury between 1997 and 1999, was the All Blacks back coach after joining head

coach Ian Foster’s set-up in 2000 after leaving his role as head coach of Welsh side, Scarlets. He and forwards coach, John Plumtree were both announced as having left the All Blacks coaching set-up on Sunday as New Zealand Rugby continues to unravel the disastrous series for the All Blacks. Mooar spent time within the Crusaders unit before his shift to Wales, where he worked alongside Jason Ryan, who was announced on the weekend as a new member of the coaching staff going forward as the

All Blacks begin preparations to travel to South Africa. The decision to axe both Mooar and Plumtree came after “robust and in-depth conversations” following the series defeat, Foster said in a statement. “Right now, I am really feeling for two fine men who are great rugby coaches that made an enormous contribution to the All Blacks,” he said. “I have no doubt both coaches will go on to great success and I want to thank them for their hard work.” Alongside Ryan’s appointment,

Joe Schmidt is now formally a part of the set-up as well, alongside his role as an independent selector. He’ll focus largely on a key analysis role, but also will work with Foster on overall strategy and attack play. Ryan will step in to run the forwards in a direct replacement for Plumtree, with former All Black prop Greg Feek assisting him as the scrum coach. The Crusaders came out on the weekend following the announcement to confirm that Ryan would leave their set-up to join the All Blacks.

Football sidelined again

The weather gods are a long way from being in favour with local footballers after the third successive round of Mainland Football was postponed on the weekend. Heavy rainfall across the region continues to leave playing fields vulnerable and Mainland Football were quickly on the game heading into the weekend, postponing action once more due to the playing conditions. Locally, it’s meant there’s been no football since the start of the school holidays, with junior football grades expected to return to action this weekend to coincide with the return to school yesterday.

Heartland squad Mid Canterbury Rugby’s senior coaches will announce their squad for this year’s Heartland Rugby Championship on Sunday, the day after the Watters Cup final. The squad will be officially released at a naming function at the Ashburton Showgrounds at 12.30pm with plenty of interest in who has made the cut following the past four weeks of training after the wider training squad was named last month. The Mid Canterbury Development side will also be named at the event.

Celtic players selected Two Ashburton rugby players have been nominated for the 2022 NZ Marist Colts tour of Northland and Auckland. Elyh McKibbin and Monty Nixon, who both have played for the Celtic senior side this season, were named in the list of nominations which was announced on the weekend. The tour kicks off on July 29. Each year the NZ Marist Colts take on some of the country’s most talented rugby 7s players. The team is selected from 29 Marist clubs around the country.

Mid Canterbury stay in the finals hunt Matt Markham The Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s hockey side kept their title hunt moving forward on the weekend, with just a few weeks of play remaining before the knockout stage of the season. And there’s a big game lying in wait for them this weekend to get excited about too. On Saturday they squared off with HSOB/Burnside in the 15th week of the competition, looking to consolidate their place within the top three of the standings with three rounds remaining. In comfortable fashion, they made relatively light work of the assignment too, registering a 4-1 win courtesy of goals from Andrew Kirkcaldie, Hayden Sinclair, Thomas White and Sam Bennett to lift their season record for nine wins, four losses and a draw from their 14 matches. That result sees them firmly placed third in the standings, with a game in hand, on 28 competition points, four points below the ta-

ble-topping Carlton Redcliffs and three behind the second placed, Southern Sluggers. There’s a chance at narrowing that gap considerably this week though with Mid Canterbury set to take on Carlton Redcliffs on Saturday. The two sides met back in May for the first time this season with nothing splitting the two teams as they drew 3-all in an epic encounter. If Mid Canterbury can win this weekend, they’ll push themselves into contention to potentially finish second on the standings with their bye round looming the following week before a last round clash with cellar dwellers, Marist to conclude the normal season. The Mid Canterbury Women’s side also returned to play on the weekend after a bit of a break for a couple of weeks but it wasn’t a happy return to the turf for the ladies as they were beaten 1-5 by Carlton Redcliffs. A lone goal from Sam Dalziel was the highlight of the match for the Mid Canterbury side. They sit seventh on the standings, but will be out to finish their returning season to Canterbury Hockey on a high this weekend when they take on Marist at Nga Puna Wai.
