Purple shirt wins top prize Malcolm Hopwood There was a work that Ashburton Society of Arts’ judge kept coming back to. It was entitled The Purple Shirt by South Canterbury artist, Diana Peneamene, which Felicity Milburn, said “locked her in with its sense of character and presence”. At the 58th Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition last night, The Purple Shirt won the $3000 RMF Silva Premier Award. In announcing the award, Milburn, who’s curator of the Christchurch Art Gallery, said of the winning painting “there was a suggestion of the figure’s mind being directed inwards that created a great sense of feeling”. Alongside the winning art work, were 15 other awards of which several were reserved for Mid Canterbury artists. They included Margaret Digby’s Lyttelton from Diamond Harbour which won the Rosebank Village Award and Brian Shimmin’s Ash Bowl which took out the NBS Lo-
cal Merit Award. Milburn said she found most of the works “captivating in many different ways” and showed the spread of work across the region, stretching out beyond it. “It’s always incredible to see the diversity and skill with which the artists operate,” she said. “One of the lovely things about an award such as this is the way the visitor encounters a range of perspectives as they go through the exhibition.” Convenor of the exhibition, Kay Begg, said the consensus from society of arts members was that “there were many outstanding entries”. “We are thrilled with the quality of work submitted,” she added. “It’s wonderful for them to receive recognition and it encourages them to continue to develop their art.” The exhibition includes 357 art works ranging from painting to sculpture to jewellery and applied art. The artists were all required to create their work within the past 12 months and exhibit it physically for the first time. The exhibition, at the Ashburton Art Gallery, opens today and runs through to July 29. All the Convenor of the Ashburton Society of Arts’ annual exhibition, Kay Begg, admires the winning painting, entitled The Purple Shirt. works are available for sale.
Community urged to have say on Three Waters BY JONATHAN LEASK Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown is encouraging the community to have their say on the Three Waters reforms. The Ashburton District Council will reinforce its opposition when it submits on the Government’s Water Services Entities Bill and calling for a pause on proceedings. Brown is also calling on the community not to miss their one and only opportunity to weigh in.
“This is the only chance that you will get to have any say whatsoever on what happens to our district’s infrastructure,” he said. The bill is the first legislation to enable the Three Waters reforms for July 2024 when the services currently run by councils will be run by four entities. Brown said the council will take the opportunity to “reinforce our opposition to the reforms as they are currently proposed”. “Our strong view is that the re-
form process should be paused for up to five years to let the new regulator, Taumata Arowai, settle in, and then see how readily councils are meeting their obligations and responsibilities.” The council will also raise concerns around local representation. Each of the new entities will have regional representative groups of between 12 and 14 members. Half the members will be appointed from mana whenua from the entity region, and the
sions due by July 22. “If you don’t want to see future water services that are ‘all pay, no say’ this is your only opportunity to stand up and be counted,” Brown said.
other half from territorial authorities, which is where Brown is concerned about balance. “It is critical that Ashburton and Canterbury have strong and clear mechanisms to ensure local perspectives are heard and considered by the new entity. “There is also a need to ensure a balance of metro, rural, and provincial council representation on the regional representative groups.” Brown is encouraging the community to also give feedback to Government, with submis-

Aiming to combat farmer depression Lili Haydon Military-trained consultant Tony Groves feels strongly about helping and supporting farmers who may be struggling mentally. Fonterra and The Rural Support Trust have teamed up with Groves, to help farmers’ wellbeing. He will be speaking to Mid Canterbury farmers in Methven and Hinds tomorrow. Groves, an army vet with a 16year career leading teams in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East, will be educating farmers on how to use different skills in order to help with their mindset to deal with everyday challenges they may face on the farm. Groves understands farmers who are struggling with living in isolation and the stigma, particularly dairy farmers, can face from the outside world. “I feel strongly about helping famers.”
Tony Groves, who will be speaking tomorrow to Mid Canterbury farmers on ways to improve their mental wellbeing. PHOTO SUPPLIED He knows many farmers face the same challenges soldiers do, which is the expectation that they should either harden up or move on when faced with a problem. However, Groves thrives on challenging old stereotypes like
that. “Regardless of what happened yesterday, you still have to go back out the next day,” he said. To Groves, it is not about what happens, it is about having the tools and support system to help
deal with it. There’s also some fun stuff planned, including a tyre-flipping competition, followed by a barbecue. Groves will be speaking at the Methven rugby clubrooms from
10am to noon and the Hinds community centre from 1.30pm to 3pm. Groves’ business Halo Training uses workshops to help companies empower their employees to thrive.
Councillor salary boost Jonathan Leask Nominations for the local government elections open soon and a salary increase may get new faces putting their hands up. The Remuneration Authority has confirmed the increased pool for councillor salaries
which will see a jump from $41,214 closer to $50,000 for the next term. The authority is the independent body that dictates the elected councillors’ salaries. The council only has a say in how it is distributed. The current Ashburton District Council opted to have the eight councillors on the same salary, which as of July 1 rose slightly to $41,214, and the deputy mayor on a higher salary, $59,182, due to the extra responsibilities. The remuneration pool doesn’t
apply to the mayor. Councillor Angus McKay, who is yet to confirm his intentions for the upcoming election, said he hoped the next council would take a similar approach to allocating the pool. “In my opinion this council has worked very well and one of the reasons I put that down to is the people sitting around the room and the other is that this council did away with the hierarchy of committees. “I’m hopeful the new council will do the same.
SALE
“We have all been on equal pay, equal footing, and I think that’s what made this council work very, very well.” Following the elections in October the remuneration pool will increase by $61,302 from $388,893 to $450,195. The newly elected council decide what structure the division of the pool takes, with options to pay positions of extra responsibility more such as the deputy mayor. The Remuneration Authority has also confirmed the mayor’s
salary of $123,201 will increase to $132,690 after the election. There is no change to the Methven Community Board remuneration, with the chair still set to receive $5544 and $2777 to each of the other four members.

Post Office revitalised as supermarket Malcolm Hopwood The former Ashburton Post Office in East Street has a new lease of life. It’s become a specialist supermarket, focusing on food for Mid Canterbury’s Asian, Indian and Island community. Real estate agent, Clark McLeod, has negotiated a lease for Bel Air Dairy owner, Navin Naiker, to relocate his business to the ground floor. The space is three times the size of his former East Street premises, allowing Naiker to expand his range of goods. Naiker and family members had a “soft opening” last Friday but this week are selling their groceries, snacks, fresh vegetables and frozens from their new premises. “It’s great to revitalise the old building,” he said. “I want to change the culture of Asian shopping with the availability of goods and competitive prices.” “It’s our intention for the busi-
ness to reflect the influence of Ashburton’s growing international community.” Instead of purchasing in Christchurch, Naiker hopes his customers will buy locally because of his “extensive range of goods available”. He’s also included what he calls “mainstream food” to attract a wider clientele. His 7am to 8pm hours allow Asian and Island people, who live in rural areas, to visit his shop after work. In the future he’s hoping to expand to hot food. Naiker, who’s lived in Mid Canterbury for nine years and owned Bel Air Dairy for the past four, has been looking to expand his premises for some time. He was attracted to the former Post Office because of its size – 450 square metres – and loading dock which gives him easy access to fresh produce. It’s taken Naiker seven days to move his groceries across to his new site and there’s still work to do, but he has sufficient stock in place to start the week. Naiker and his family will staff the supermarket and he has five other employees from two other businesses to help.

GPs need your help Daniel Alvey Local GPs and employers are supportive of putting trust in employees and being lenient on the requirement of medical certificates. The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners warned that medical certificate requests are adding pressure to an already stretched health system. Ashburton GP spokeswoman doctor Penny Holdaway said this would help ease the pressure faced on GPs which are already struggling with the battle against winter viruses and sickness. “Oh please, it seems like a big thing, but it means a lot to us, we can get an awful lot and it does clog the system. “Particularly as we’ve got Covid and flu up to our eyeballs, RSV coming there is a lot of illness around and we’re really under the pump. “I understand that employers are concerned, but the evidence is that it’s pretty rare that workers will take time off for nothing, they’ll even go to work sick.” Local employer, Speights Ale House owner Tony Potts said he has never required a medical certificate from his employees, because he has trust in them. “At the moment we need to do everything to support the GPs.” Potts said staff are much less likely to exploit the system, taking sick days they don’t need because with Cov-

but for the most part I have trusted my staff to not take advantage of the system,” Potts said.
Funding boost for medical students The Rural Health Academic Centre (RHACA) is a major recipient of the latest Advance Ashburton community foundation grants. The centre educates fifth year medical students from Otago University who are based at Ashburton Hospital and private GP practises in Mid Canterbury for the teaching year. The RHACA received a quarterly payment of $25,058.13, which totals $100,000 annually. The payment also supports the Rural Interprofessional Simulation Course (RiSC) where 60 participants from eight rural hospitals around New Zealand attend skill workshops and trauma simulations in Ashburton to assist their personal development. In all nine organisations received $100,000 in the Advance Ashburton May/June grant round. Another was Wellbeing Opuke which was granted $15,000. Community Activator, Jess Wilson, said Wellbeing Opuke’s grant “supports us to continue doing the great work in connecting our rural community.” “We try to come up with quite diverse community events to bring people together, help get conversations started and assist people to feel included in their community,” she said. Other recipients were: ■ Ashburton College ($19,000) for a teacher aid for Kohanga. ■ Tinwald School PTA ($15,000) for funding to assist covering an eating area. ■ Tinwald Pony Club ($2000) for the purchase of games equipment. ■ Mount Hutt Ski Club ($2000) to help waterproof and repair their clubroom. ■ Seabrook Mackenzie ($2000) for specific learning difficulties. ■ Family Help Trust ($11,250) to continue child abuse prevention services. ■ BOOST literacy programme ($5250) to help 140 students in 20 schools.

Winter grazing – what’s the deal? By Pat Deavoll Some of the requirements for winter grazing which were to come into effect in May 2021 have been changed and further delayed until November 2022. Changes have been made to the default conditions: slope, pugging, and resowing. A new condition around critical source areas has been added. The changes were done by Government to address implementation issues following advocacy by DairyNZ and other groups to raise concerns on behalf of farmers about the practicality of these rules. While these changes have been deferred, there is still a strong focus on making sure good wintering practice is being used on-farm – both by the Government and the public. If you are planning on expanding the area you use for winter grazing above the maximum area used in the reference period, then you need a consent. You might also need consent if you cannot comply with any of the default conditions. Check with your re-

The regulations introduce a reference period which is the period from July 1, 2014 and ended June 30, 2019. The regulations put a hold on expanding IWG ac-
tivities above the area used in the reference period. This is still in force and should be followed for the intensive winter grazing to be a permitted activity. This means that the area of
consent will be needed. What is important here is the word ‘farm’. A farm is defined as a landholding whose activities include agriculture. A landholding means one or more parcels of land that are managed as a single operation. The intensive winter grazing limits apply to a ‘farm’, which is defined as one or more parcels of land (that may or may not be contiguous) that are managed as a single operation. Thus, if a run-off and milking platform are managed as a single operation, they can be considered together to determine compliance with the requirements for intensive winter grazing. Both the maximum area winter grazed during the reference period, and the 50ha or 10 per cent (whichever is the greater) permitted activity criteria apply.

the role of deputy chair due to an ever-increasing workload in a period of significant change for farmers. “Kate has an excellent mix of rural expertise and business acumen to support us in achieving our strategic goals and objectives of helping farmers run thriving and profitable farm businesses,” he said. “I will continue as chairman of B+LNZ and look forward to Kate’s assistance in her new role as deputy chair. Mid Canty farmer wins top award
EU-NZ Free Trade Agreement disappointing for NZ Pat Deavoll
Pat Deavoll Mid Canterbury farm manager Darryl Oldham has taken out the 2022 Rabobank Management Project Award, a business management prize for up-and-coming farmers. Selected from a group of New Zealand’s most progressive farmers – graduates of the 2021 Rabobank Farm Managers Programme (FMP) – Oldham was recognised for his business management project, which highlighted how he had utilised the lessons from the programme in his role as farm manager on the 200-ha farming operation he runs in partnership with his wife Anna, and parents Peter and Gael. The Oldhams’ farming partnership is located in Westerfield near Ashburton. As the farm manager, Oldham is involved in all the day-to-day aspects of running the business which grows cereals, small seeds, peas, maize for silage, and fodder crops for finishing lambs. Oldham said his management project assessed the viability of converting all or part of the farming operation to sheep milking. “Incorporating lessons from the FMP, I looked at the key financial performance indicators for the current system, including with a sheep milking unit added,” he said. “To do this, I designed a business plan with conversion costs and gross margins to generate some financial information that could be used as performance indicators in the event sheep milking was introduced.” Oldham said he also looked at what adding sheep milking to the farming system would do to the
Daryl Oldham has won the 2022 Rabobank Management Project Award for his business management project on the viability of converting his farm to sheep milking. PHOTO SUPPLIED farm’s environmental footprint. “I spoke with a number of other farmers who are sheep milking to get a feel for the environmental impact, and the initial analysis suggested sheep milking would have a similar or lower environmental impact than our existing farming activity,” he said. While his analysis highlighted there were several merits to the sheep milking option, Oldham said the partnership had decided not to add the sheep milking unit at this point in time. “The sheep milk processing plant that was planned to open in the area later this year has met with delays, and with this factory not expected to open until next year – and no other factory nearby to collect sheep milk – the con-
version didn’t make sense right now. My analysis also found no strong financial advantage for going down the sheep milking route for our business, with the forecast profitability largely in line with that of our existing operation,” he said. “However, we’ll continue to analyse the feasibility of adding sheep milking into our farming system and, if we can find a way to increase the yield of milk per sheep, we may well go down this path at some stage in the future.”
New Zealand’s red meat sector is deeply disappointed and concerned at the poor-quality European Union-New Zealand trade deal, which will continue to put it at a disadvantage in its third-largest export market. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen concluded negotiations on the NZ-EU Free Trade Agreement last month. The deal will see only a small quota for New Zealand beef into the European Union – 10,000 tonnes into a market that consumes 6.5 million tonnes of beef annually – far less than the red meat sector’s expectations. Ashburton farmer David Clark was not afraid to voice his opinion. “It is very disappointing that dairy and beef products have received little if any concessions in the European FTA,” he said. “NZ farmers strive to have very high standards of animal welfare, and environmental stewardship and have now joined in climate action by being the first farmers in the world to price and regulate methane emissions from livestock via He Waka Eke Noa. Unfortunately, it seems a trading bloc of the world’s most discerning consumers has only allowed Free Trade access to what amounts to 0.1 per cent of European beef consumption. “While there is some benefit over time for horticultural, viticultural, and seafood
products, the tilt of balance seems to be in favour of European exports to NZ giving significantly more Free Trade Access to our market. “This agreement will increase NZ’s reliance on Asian markets for meat and milk. “We have some of the best trade negotiators on the planet who argue from a position of reason and evidence,” William Rolleston of Blue Cliff Station said. “It seems clear to me that our negotiators have had to balance trade volume quotas with the desire of the EU to enforce their practices and beliefs on New Zealand farmers. “Countries that are outside the EU but trade freely with the EU such as Norway have had to enact around 60 per cent of the EU directives for that privilege. Many of those rules with respect to the environment limit or direct inputs rather than limit the effects – rules New Zealand farmers would find hard to swallow. “In relation to the EU meat market, the quotas are a rounding error they are so small. It seems our trade negotiators have considered that it was worth sacrificing volume to avoid the worst of EU requirements which may not have been fit for purpose in New Zealand,” Rolleston said. “We still have a trade deal with the USA to negotiate. The compromises we have made will send a negative signal that we are willing to compromise our livestock farmers.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): It benefits you to delight in the person in front of you and give a level of attention that assumes this is the best match in the entire world for what needs to happen in this moment of time for the both of you. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): What’s better than having all the answers? An excuse to collaborate! There are valuable gems to be mined; you’ll do it together while building trust inside what has potential to be a crack-team. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You want to give people what they ask for, but they will ask for things outside of your control. At least you have control over the high level of communication and respect you’re able to offer. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): To acquire deeper knowledge of a topic you love is to take part in one of the great pleasures of the modern world – information at your fingertips. It’s a lucky time to be alive. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Is the opportunity exciting enough that you’d want to drop everything else you’ve got going on to take advantage of it? That’s the level it needs to be to warrant your “yes” today. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’ve figured out what wasn’t working about the last situation, and maybe you can’t do anything about it at this point, but you can sure avoid the same dynamic in your next arrangement. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There’s no need to comment on what’s going on; just experience it. This can be a mental and spiritual discipline that pertains not only to outward comments but inward as well. Nonjudgment frees energy. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): To open your creativity opens many other things at once, including spirituality, relationships and schools of thought. Imagination is a path to different realms of being. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Each person will be wanting the same level of attention from you as the last person, so don’t start anything that will be difficult to keep up for everyone in the entire group. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The suit looks sharper than the sportswear, and it’s an age-old choice that spans beyond the sartorial realm. Which do you want more, your own comfort or the structure that commands respect? AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): One or two new people on the scene is all it takes to change the mood. Someone’s smile is a fresh breeze, your own personal uplift. Dark clouds disappear; the edges of life seem to sparkle. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Sensitive issues come into the open. Should they be explored? You might be surprised at whose feelings blow up on a hair trigger. Tolerance is an oft-underrated virtue.

‘We’ve heard of Queenstown, don’t know about Mt Hutt’
I
took an opportunity last week to ask Australians about where in New Zealand, they’d like to visit. We spent a week in and around Sydney attending a family birthday and meeting the locals. All of them answered Queenstown, not Auckland or Wellington or the North Island. Admittedly my cross-section of Sydney-siders was less than 10, but it was enough to know they’d heard of Lake Wakatipu and Coronet Peak. Three had visited Queenstown and one couple were flying to Christchurch and taking a rental south in November. They didn’t like snow.
Malcolm Hopwood That means they’d have to travel through Mid Canterbury. So what do we have to offer? I looked for posters, videos – any sort of marketing material – at Christchurch Airport while we were collecting our suitcases and being frisked by Customs. It was an opportunity for visitors to know about us as they motored down to the Southern Lakes.
But I couldn’t find anything. That, by itself, means little, but it does question what we’re doing to attract visitors from the North Island or further afield. If we believe our Auckland-centric TV news service, then little of New Zealand exists beyond their motorway. That’s a problem. If, over many months, we’ve viewed the orchestrated 1pm Covid updates, we’ve learned about Auckland but the rest of New Zealand is cobbled together. That’s us. So what initiatives are we taking? More particularly, because we spend a percentage of our rates on marketing, what’s been the achievements?
Do visitors know about us or do they just drive through, pausing at the unsightly mess at the SH1/Walnut Avenue intersection? With the worst of Covid over, we hope, we have a chance to get it right with a unique festival or an Ashburton aviation attraction or kites and hot air balloons or our Plains Village. Have we thought about what Baring Square West could become when the Ashburton District Council vacates the space? But this week there’s an opportunity. The World President of Lions International is visiting Methven on Friday. Lions Clubs around the world number
40,000 and have more than a million members, many who are financially capable of following his path and visiting New Zealand. They’d be skiing on Mt Hutt, staying here, enjoying the hot pools and discovering what the surrounding area has to offer. Congratulations Methven Lions for developing our champion Mt Hutt skifield and being part of his invitation to come here. Let’s hope our marketing people will spend our dollars on publicising the visit and encouraging him to send the drawcard video to Lions Club members around the world.

Just what the doctor ordered By Jamie Wall
T
he national angst over what many were predicting would be the end of the All Black winning streak at Eden Park only took a matter of seconds to dissipate. To be more precise, it was the time it took for Sevu Reece to pick the ball up from his own 22 and run away to score a try that put the All Blacks up 14-5 in a test that they’d eventually win comfortably by 42-19. Until then, it seemed like all the nightmares about what this Irish team was bringing with it on this tour were coming true. They’d scored an excellent opening try through Keith Earls and dominated territory and possession. In short, it looked like they’d picked up exactly where they left off when the two sides had last met in Dublin. It isn’t right to single out the gift that Reece got as the defining point of the whole game – there are a few – but it certainly seemed to turn the Irish into a different team.
The problem for them was, the team they turned into were more spectators than participants for the remaining 10 minutes of the first half. It might explain why so many of them simply watched on when Jamison Gibson-Park inexplicably tried to run the ball himself off a defensive lineout drive. The fresh air between the Irish halfback and his support was quickly filled with black jerseys, the ball was turned over and Beauden Barrett’s brilliance did the rest. His kick along the floor for Quinn Tupaea was perfect, all of a sudden it was a three score game and feeling like one of those tests from back in the day when all the All Blacks had to do was withstand an early Irish onslaught and it would end up being a comfortable win. Which is exactly what it was. While there was plenty to like about Ireland’s enterprise, especially the link play between their forwards, the game was done as a contest far, far earlier than even the most optimistic All Black fan would have thought.
An airborne Sevu Reece scores for the All Blacks on Saturday night. Ardie Savea’s two tries got the crowd on their feet, with his second coming out of nothing more than a half gap 40 metres out. Sky TV certainly got their money’s worth for their 4K camera, with the number eight putting in a trademark dive right in front of it for a very aesthetically pleasing shot. While the rest of the scoring was academic, there were a couple of incidents that are worth noting, because it’s fair to say the Irish and Northern Hemisphere media have already very much done so themselves.
The change in Irish fortunes in the first half did coincide with Johnny Sexton leaving the field, the victim of what looked to be an unintentional contact to the head by Sam Cane. Sexton was having a very good game up until that point, so it’s hard not to feel sympathy with the Irish cause on that one. Then, later in the second half, the most talked about selection in the All Blacks made a play that is probably going to be talked about all week. Scott Barrett, whose inclusion at blindside had done exactly what it was
supposed to in terms of solidifying the All Black set piece (in particular the scrum), charged into a ruck and looked to have made contact with Peter O’Mahony’s head. Was this legal? It certainly didn’t look like it at the time and doesn’t get any better on repeat viewing, especially considering that Barrett is no stranger to discipline issues. If it is somehow retrofitted by the judiciary to warrant a suspension, some serious questions need to be asked about just what rule book Barrett has been reading, if there is one at all. But even if he is sidelined, there was enough shown to now view this tour as a potentially soul-sapping few weeks for the Irish, rather than the red hot chance to create history. The scoreline was only a couple of points away from the last time they’d played at Eden Park 10 years ago, the start of a series they lost 3-0. Credit where credit is due: the All Blacks forgot about all their woes last year and started afresh in style.

Southern will have to pull out all the stops to hold off Rakaia in tonight’s Premier 1 and Premier 2 promotion and relegation match in Mid Canterbury Netball.
Stakes high on the court

Winning run continues Matt Markham Almost perfect, but not quite. Mid Canterbury United Football club sides enjoyed a great day out in the sun on Saturday, with four of their five sides playing in Mainland Football competitions securing victories to cap a good day. Included in the performances were a combined 15 goals, as players revelled in near-perfect conditions for football. After getting the winning groove back a week ago, the Mid Canterbury United side were back in winning form again on the weekend, this time beating Halswell United 3-1 in a gripping match up in Christchurch. The result now has the side right in contention near the top of the table after three rounds of play, and with the wind at their backs the side will be looking forward to seeing how far they can push themselves in the new grade after dropping out of the New World Premiership last month. While winning is a refreshing feeling for the senior side, it’s becoming the nor-
mal for the team’s Reserves group who notched up another victory on the weekend, this time by coming out on the right side of tight encounter to beat Western AFC 4-3 on the Ashburton Domain. Three-from-three since the competition switched to the championship stage last month, the Reserves are the only team undefeated in their competition, and will be out to chase another victory this weekend against the winless St Alban’s Shirley side to really emphasise their control on the competition. In the age group grades on the weekend, the 17th grade side kept in touch with the leaders in their Division One competition with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Christ’s College. They sit just outside the top four in their division. The 15th grade team were the only Mid Canterbury United side to fall on the weekend, losing to the top-ranked side, Halswell 1-4. Despite the defeat, they still sit second in their pool. The 13th grade team, who are in Division Two for their age group, picked up their fourth win of the second stage of the season to sit just behind competition leaders, Nomads. They scored five goals on the weekend to win 5-2 over Ferrymead Bays.
Matt Markham With titles to be potentially both won and lost, tonight’s promotion and relegation matches in Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competition have a lot riding on them. As teams prepare to head into the championship round of the season, just who lands where will have a massive impact on who carries the favouritism tag into the last round of the season. Irrelevant of what unfolds tonight though, the story of the season thus far as without a doubt been Rakaia. Unsighted in the Premier competition for a few years now, they’ve returned with a bang – working their way from Premier 3 at the start of the season to tonight earning a crack at Southern and the chance to complete the meteoric rise by gaining entry into Premier 1 for the championship round. Whether it happens or not, depends on what unfolds on the court – but Rakaia will be keen to bounce back from their
first defeat of the season last Thursday night when they were beaten by Methven B to complete the second round. For Southern, it’s a chance to get back into the winning groove. Life has been tough for every team in Premier 1 this season unless you’re Celtic, and a good confidence boosting victory against the Rakaia side tonight would go a long way to putting them on the front foot heading to the business end of the season. The winner of the match tonight will jump straight into the frying pan from the fire with a game against defending champions, Hampstead – who will be smarting after surprisingly being beaten by Methven last week. Tonight’s other match is equally as intriguing as the first. Methven Shearmac, who were the dominant force in Premier 3 after the departure of Rakaia at the end of the first round will get a crack to join the club’s B side in Premier 2 if they can knock over Hampstead B. It’s been a tough middle stage to the season for the Hampstead side who went winless through the second round, but get a chance to, like Southern, get some form back on the board. Both matches tonight begin at 6.30pm.
Strong weekend for local stallion Matt Markham There’s a lot of territory still to be covered this harness racing season, but Michael Heenan might be on the cusp of breaking new ground – in more ways than one. The Barrhill-based horseman picked up his fifth win of the season as a trainer at Addington on Sunday when MC Squared belied his $30-to-one quote to win impressively in the maiden trot early in the programme. It continued a great run of recent form for the stable, but also Heenan and his wife, Di’s resident stallion, Superfast Stuart, who is the sire of MC Squared. He’s produced 10 winners from 21 individual runners to the races this season. Two of them came on the weekend with MC Squared and also DD’s Super Stuart, who made it back-to-back wins on
MC Squared and Matty Williamson stride to victory for local trainer Michael Heenan at Addington on Sunday. Friday night at Addington as well. Superfast Stuart’s best season tally came last season with 16 winners across the season, and with only six to go until he reaches that mark again this season, it
looks like he’s a good chance of setting a new mark during the remainder of the year. It’s the same for Heenan as well. The winner of 84 races as a trainer, his five wins this season
has him within distance of his career best mark of 11, which he set during the extended season up until the end of last year. With a good team of horses around him at the moment, in-
cluding the promising maiden pacer Trouble Supreme and the rapidly-approaching grass track season, things are looking bright. The win of MC Squared capped a great week for Methven owner and breeder, Paul Wilkins. He’d enjoyed another bigpriced winner a week earlier at Addington when The Black Shadow was victorious at better than $50-to-one. He’s joined in the ownership of MC Squared by his agistment company, Horsepitality Ltd as well as long time ownership partner, Kevin McSweeney. Alongside them sit a host of first-time horse owners including Ken Fasi, Ewan Cameron, Harry Solouota, Wayne and Jill Thom and Sara Toulson, as well as the estate of the late Boyd Keepa. “It’s been a good week,” Wilkins said. “They don’t come along very often like that, so you have to enjoy them, and we were certainly surprised by the win of MC Squared, that’s for sure.”

A weekend of change in Watters Cup race By Matt Markham & Steve Devereux Consider the cat firmly among the pigeons. The race to Mid Canterbury rugby supremacy took an unexpected turn on Saturday as the competition’s two top sides both suffered defeats, altering the course to the playoffs considerably with three rounds remaining. Rakaia came from 5-20 down at halftime to shock Celtic 24-20, and Methven put on a dazzling performance to get one back on Southern under blue skies and the mountains at Methven, winning 32-18. The results moved Methven to the top of the standings, but it’s all looking rather tight now with Southern and Rakaia set to play twice in the next few weeks, and Methven and Celtic the same. In Methven, the locals came out jet-propelled and clearly in the mood to cause problems for their rivals. An early penalty to Tom Reekie was followed by a well-worked try out wide to Manasa Vula, before Southern got their game under way with a long-range penalty to Tom Middleton. With the knowledge of Southern’s prowess when it comes to second-half comebacks, the locals were keen to get a march on their guests before the break, and a brilliant solo-effort from Xavier Barlett and the second to Vula who again found space out wide saw them take a 24-3 lead into the sheds. Southern returned determined, as most of the 400 hundred off people lining the sidelines expected, and they went about trying to get back into the game. Mason Briant burrowed over for a try to get the wheels moving, but a Reekie penalty gave some further breathing room to the Methven side. When Angus McKenzie scored on the 70-minute mark, the comeback looked right on the cards, but Bartlett again found himself in space and didn’t squander the opportunity, dotting down his second with minutes left on the clock to put the game beyond doubt – and grab Methven an all-important bonus point. Southern scored a late consolation try through the barnstorming Adam Williamson, but it was too little too late, and plans of celebrating club legend Jon Dampney’s 250th match with a win went out the window for the Southern side.
Game of two halves
Meanwhile, rugby’s a funny old game, and sometimes it just doesn’t want to follow the script; and that’s what transpired at Rakaia. At the halfway mark of the Rakaia-Celtic clash, the scoreline read 20-5 in the visitors’ favour, and after a first half that left Celtic firmly in control of the match, most pundits would have foreseen Rakaia putting up a brave next 15 minutes, then running out of steam as the green machine picked up the pace, with their speedy backline punching holes at will, and cruising to a bonus-point victory.
Southern and Methven fought out another classic match on the weekend with Methven the victors But, that’s not how rugby works. Whatever fiery words were spoken in the Rakaia camp at halftime, they had the desired effect, and much, much more. Rakaia had actually opened the game’s scoring, with a try to Cory Sinclair, but it didn’t take long for the reply to come, with Celtic opening their account from a midfield scrum. The ball quickly went left to Raitube Vasurakuta, who broke a couple of tackles and found Liam McCormack charging in support up the middle; try-time. Ten minutes later Cam Butler, playing at first five, made a superb break, and Monty Nixon finished the move, converting his own try. When Nixon added a penalty shortly afterwards, it was looking ominous for the home side. Under pressure, they had earned the wrath of referee Simon Bennett and had been marched a couple of times, and had a penalty reversed. Rakaia’s big boppers had been making some inroads, but any gains were quickly negated by fierce tackling from their green counterparts, with Kaydis Hona yet again featuring strongly. Ross McKay looked like he was playing his seventh game for Celtic, not his 97th, helping his team clean up in the linouts with ease, and Nixon Brown was bristling on the wing, only desperate defence keeping him out on several occasions. There was time for one more try in the half, from a quick tap, ball handed up to the unstoppable Vasurakuta, and Celtic
had 20 points on the board. But that was their lot. After the break, the men in dark blue came out and produced surely their best 40 minutes of the season. Those big men, the ones with 4, 5 and 12 on their backs, were making 15 metres instead of five, and almost always providing excellent continuity for the next runner, or good ball for Angus Mackenzie at halfback, who never ceased his constant chirping as he urged his forward pack on. Those forwards were suddenly more than competitive at scrum time, and the lineouts were no longer a gift for Celtic, who just could not get back in the game, and the points came for the home side. Promising wing Peter Taylor was first to dot down, with the ball travelling right out the backline from a scrum, and a Thomas Whittaker conversion from wide out lifted the team further. It was Celtic showing signs of disarray, and another converted try duly followed only minutes later. The Rakaia faithful on the sidelines had been mouthing the usual platitudes to urge their team on, but now there was something extra in their tone – belief. Their team was on the verge of a huge upset, and they were letting everyone know about it. Paul Taylor’s binoculars were fair flying in the wind as he charged

Rakaia 24 (Cory Sinclair (2), Peter Taylor tries, Thomas Whittaker 2 conv) beat Celtic 20 (Liam McCormack, Monty Nixon, Raitube Vasurakuta tries; Monty Nixon pen, conv). up and down the sideline, spurring his team on to greater heights. Celtic eventually came back, as they had to if they were to take anything from this match, and some fine tactical kicking gave them plenty of opportunity, but they couldn’t find the finish line, in the face of the blue wall of sustained tackling effort Rakaia was putting up. It had to come, and Willie McGoon was the catalyst with a big mid-field break, fittingly finished off by Cory Sinclair, who bookended the match with tries, and in turn launched a panther (sorry, big cat) among the Watters Cup pigeons.

Dalziel hat-trick spurs Mid Canterbury to success Matt Markham A hat-trick to goal-scoring dynamo, Sam Dalziel pushed the Mid Canterbury Senior Women’s hockey side in the direction of success as they took down the H & B Swans at Nga Puna Wai on Saturday. The side claimed their third win of the season, with a 4-1 victory that further underlined the remarkable leaps and bounds the side have made in their return to Canterbury Hockey’s Division One competition this season. The result lifted the side up the standings ladder and pushed them into seventh position, and while it won’t be possible to go even higher up the standings with a notable gulf between them and the sixth placed side, it’s still a massive step in the right direction for the side. Dalziel ruled the roost during the match, scoring three times including twice from penalty corners, as the Mid Canterbury women dominated across the turf.
Sam Dalziel did what she does best and scored three goals for Mid Canterbury on the weekend as they picked up their third win of the season. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN Sarah Wilson also added her name to the score sheet in what was a complete team perfor-
mance to get the win on the board. Meanwhile, the Mid Canter-
bury men’s side followed suit with a victory of their own on the weekend – keeping themselves
in touch with competition leaders Carlton Redcliffs and Southern. The Mid Canterbury lads were too slick for University of Canterbury winning 4-0, also at Nga Puna Wai, and their charge to the top was helped by Carlton Redcliffs only managing a 1-all draw in their match with the lowly ranked Harewood side. Mid Canterbury’s goal scoring was shared around with four individual goal-scorers for the match, but Tim Harford and Scott Marshall each continued their run of finding the back of the goal with one each, while James Wright and Hayden Sinclair also etched their names onto the score sheet. The performance sets up a mouth-watering clash next week when they take on old foes Southern, in a match which will determine who takes a clear second-place on the standings. Southern were in dominant form on the weekend, winning 8-0, and will be extra charged for the clash with Mid Canterbury this week after they were beaten 3-0 by the green and golds when they first met earlier in the season.
Locals feature in Canterbury development squad Matt Markham
Chasing national glory After a busy weekend on the mats in Timaru, one Ashburton side will get the chance to compete for national indoor bowls glory later this year. The weekend marked the zone playoffs for the New Zealand Mixed Fours, Masters Fours, Mixed Pairs and Henselite singles with representatives from Timaru, Canterbury, Ashburton and North Otago competing for the chance to represent the zone at the New Zealand finals in September. With strong representation across all categories, Ashburton were expected to be to the fore, but it was the Mixed Fours team of Raewyn Robin, Julie Thomas, Grant Wilson and Simon Thomas who were the cream of the crop, winning their event to head to Wellington in September to shoot for national honours.
There’s a strong Mid Canterbury flavour starting to unfold in Canterbury women’s rugby. Late last week Canterbury named their 2022 Development side for this year’s Farah Palmer Cup campaign, and the side is littered with Mid Canterbury names from start to finish. The 23-strong squad features five local names in a real nod to the development of the women’s game on the Mid Canterbury plains. From the High School Old Boys’ club, Madison Trusler-Clark has continued her march up the ranks after making the Canterbury Under 19 side last year with inclusion in this year’s team, while clubmate Jaidyn Busch has also been named in the squad to be co-coached by Liz Worthington, Mel Ruscoe and Jimmy Sinclair. From the University of Canterbury side, sisters Erana and Jamee Te Moananui were named, along with former Mid Canterbury Rugby Women’s Development officer, Nicole Purdom. All five players are still heavily involved in club rugby action at the moment with the business end of the season looming. The University side finished second in the standings at the end of phase one of the season, while the High School Old Boys’ team finished fourth.
