Scooter stolen in assault Daniel Alvey

A young Ashburton girl is still recovering after being called a “f…. white bitch’’ in a disgraceful incident at the skatepark. Rebecca Oakley, just 12, also had stones thrown at her by at least one other youth and then had her scooter stolen. It was ripped from her grasp in what were two nasty incidents on successive visits to the skatepark. Her father, Laurence Oakley, is frustrated that the authorities can’t catch the boy allegedly behind the incident. They believe the boy attends Ashburton Intermediate with Rebecca.

“We can’t find anything out about this kid,’’ Oakley said. “The school can’t tell you anything, and the police can’t either. “And it is just really frustrating that we can’t do anything.’’ Both incidents have been reported to Ashburton Police and Ashburton Intermediate principal, Brent Gray, said he was aware of the incidents. But he said the school wasn’t able to investigate, or do anything about it, because it happened outside of school hours and in a public setting. The first incident happened last Sunday when Rebecca visited the skatepark with her grandmother. That’s when she was called a “f… g white bitch’’ and threateningly told they couldn’t enter the skatepark. Then, on Monday, Rebecca returned after school where she was lucky to avoid injury, hav-

ing stones thrown at her and her scooter forcibly stolen. She wasn’t injured in the attacks, but it has made her father nervous about letting her return to the park if the person or people responsible were not caught. Oakley said the skatepark should be a safe place for kids to hang out, given it was the only one in town. Installing security cameras was an option to consider, he thought. “Whether cameras are put in, or something, but if they (the police) can’t act on the crime, what’s the point?’’ Despite the unsavoury incidents, Rebecca still wants to go back to the skatepark to continue learning her tricks, but she can’t do that now because her scooter has been taken. “For a single income family, we can’t just go out and buy a new scooter for Rebecca,” Oakley said.

Hiccup strikes rink refrigeration plans Lili Haydon Staveley ice rink is looking for more funding to complete its upgrade project due to Lotto funding falling through. The Staveley Hall Society, which is running the rink’s operation, needs the base of the pond to be converted to a refrigerated ice rink, so locals can skate and curl, regardless of the weather in winter. Project spokeswoman Clare Harden said they are currently putting a plan in place to get the rest of the money they need to complete the project. So far, they have raised around $800,000 but now need another $400,000 to finish the project. In March, the hall society applied for $350,000 from Lotto, but last month, they found out they were unsuccessful. However, there is more good news than bad. The rink has new secondhand skates from a Dunedin ice rink, in case they do open this winter.

Staveley Ice Rink is one of only a couple of natural ice rinks in the country, but with climate change and warmer winters, it has meant more days closed than open. And Harden said they will be keeping the prices the same as last year; $10 per person and $5 for skate hire.

the rink is not yet able to receive skaters. “We need a few more good frosts, it’s still too warm to open,”

Harden said. The project is planned to be completed in time for the 2023 season.

Trott’s Garden on the market Malcolm Hopwood Trott’s Community Gardens are going on the market. For the past two years the Trott’s Community Garden Charitable Trust has been seeking funding to keep the gardens open, but chairperson, Tony Todd, said this week “our options have run out”. When owners, Alan and Catherine Trott, retired, a group of investors purchased the gardens as an interim measure. The trust board then faced the challenge of raising $1.5 million to pay them back and keep the gardens open, however this week Todd acknowledged it was “a step too far”. Since 2020 the trust has raised $650,000, but, when the Lotteries Community Facilities Fund declined a $900,000 application late last year, the funding gap became too great. “The Lotteries Commission decision was very disappointing. We made a 76-page application, peer reviewed by KPMG, and received a three paragraph rejection,” Todd said. “Over the last six months we’ve sought advice and talked to professional fundraisers, but finding the additional funds has been elusive.” As a result, the trust will be

They’ll be marketed in September with Todd hopeful they’ll be in private hands by the end of the year. The gardens will be advertised nationally and internationally, and he’d like the purchaser to be someone who’s keen to develop them further and keep them open to the public.

“The trustees, along with private supporters, are hopeful a buyer will carry on the legacy created by Alan and Catherine Trott,” he said. The gardens have an international reputation and Todd is confident they’ll be sold so investors can be paid. At this stage the trust doesn’t have a fall-back position.

“We’re hugely disappointed we couldn’t raise the funds. The gardens have been a drawcard for Ashburton and the bus-loads of people and visitors who came benefited the town,” he said. “We received tremendous local financial support, but our application to Lotteries was unsuccessful, leaving a significant funding gap.”

Three Waters matters We all depend on having safe, affordable drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services.

“We really regret our decision, but it’s the logical one.” Todd said the investors support the decision to sell privately. The trust will honour all bookings at Trott’s Community Gardens until Christmas and will talk to any individuals and groups who’ve booked in 2023. “It’s business as usual until then,” Tony Todd said.

‘Rubber hits the road’ for Rakaia Recreation Centre Jonathan Leask It is going to be an important 60 days for Rakaia, the local rugby club president says. After receiving Ashburton District Council backing Rakaia rugby president Mark Hanrahan says “the rubber’s hit the road” for its planned Rakaia Recreation Centre. The plans to build a new facility at the Rakaia Domain were only locked in once the council committed to supporting the project in its annual plan last week, but Hanrahan said most of work has already gone in. “The next 60 days are us securing our final tranche of funding while signing off the designs and going out for tender to be able to make some final decisions in spring,” Hanrahan said. The clubs will tear down the out-of-date changing room facility and replace it with a fit-for-purpose building with clubrooms, changing sheds and public toilets. Hanrahan said while the rugby club is driving the project, it will be a community facility. Now the council has come on board, funding the public toilets and offering an up to $200,000 commercial loan, Hanrahan said the club has some final processes to go through before construction can hopefully start this year. “We have the architect going through the final detailed design so we can go out to ten-

der.” They hope to have the project designs ready to go out for tender in August and a decision made in September, he said. The build timeline remained a “bit of an unknown” but they hope to have things under way by the end of the year. “We think it will take six months of building so still hopeful for completion by the second quarter of next year.” The club has funds as it has been saving for a new facility for 10 years and recently sold its cross-town clubrooms, Hanrahan said. After the club asked for a hand up not a hand out, Hanrahan said the knowledge of the council loan will open other funding options. “We have a budget, but the tender process will decide the final project cost.” Hanrahan said the building will have clubrooms, with a commercial kitchen and bar that can cater for up to 200 people, and it will be elevated so spectators can view games from the wrap-around, covered deck. It will have six changing sheds and six individual public toilets. To cater for the much bigger building, Hanrahan said the main field on the domain will shift over slightly.

Record consents keep building team busy Ashburton District Council processed a record value of building consents in the 2021-22 financial year, issuing consents for building work valued at $241.9 million. Consents received for that period were valued at $255.8m; that compares with $212.6m last year. Strategy and Compliance Group Manager Jane Donaldson said the 2014-15 financial year had set records with 1193 consents issued for work valued at $165.1 million, but the latest financial year had exceeded that. “The increase is the equivalent of about 100 extra houses on the previous year, so a new record has been set.” In the past year 983 consents were issued, including 276 for new homes. Ms Donaldson said Council had sent some consents to be processed by independent contractors but most were dealt with inhouse by a team of 15. “We processed just over half the number of consents (56.1%) within the 20 working day timeframe, but the sheer workload and extra processing time needed when building materials have been substituted because of supply chain shortages meant we couldn’t always meet it. “We might process a house with brick on the outside and as we are about to issue the consent, the brick is swapped out for another cladding, so we have to re-process it.”

More qualify for rates rebates The Annual Plan is signed and sealed for the new financial year, its final form influenced in part by more than 100 or so submitters who made their views known to council in the consultation phase. While an average 9.4 per cent rate rise across the district might seem high, it is a realistic rise in order to keep providing the services that ratepayers expect. People said they did not want to see us doing less, and lobbied for more spending on footpaths and roads. Councils up and down the country have struggled with their annual budgets this financial year, because inflation and covid uncertainties have pushed up prices. Affordability is always top of mind for Councillors, so it was good news then to hear that Government has made some changes to the eligibility of low income households for rates rebates.

The Rates Rebate Scheme is a partial refund to ease rates bills for low income people. It provides financial relief for those who own their own home and live in it, and it includes people living in retirement villages, but does not apply to rental or holiday homes or commercial premises. The maximum annual rebate has increased from $665 to $700. The abatement threshold increased from $26,510 to $28,080 income for the year to March 2022. The increases mean more households in the Ashburton district will be eligible for assistance, helping them keep up with the cost of living. There have been two milestones within

the building services team in the past year: Mike Farrell was acknowledged for carrying out more than 5000 inspections during his 15 years as a building official, and building services manager Michael Wong was made an associate member of the Ashburton branch of the Master Builders. Mr Wong has attended Master Builders meetings for the past 10 years to keep local builders abreast of changes to the Building Code, and to help them understand how the consenting process works.

Annual Plan sets budget for roads, water, services Ashburton District Council has adopted its Annual Plan 202223, confirming it will allocate an extra $1.7 million to major roading repairs and do more work on drinking water and wastewater infrastructure to meet new national standards. Money has also been re-prioritised from existing budgets for new footpaths, and Council will support the Rakaia Rugby Club via a loan for the club to develop a community recreation centre. Mayor Neil Brown said Council had listened carefully to community feedback, which supported extra spending on roads. “We’ve challenged budgets across all Council services to ensure only necessary work will be done, but we’ve included new work, like footpaths, asked for by some submitters. “Setting the next year’s programme of work has been tough because of record inflation, covid uncertainties and revaluations which have had a big impact

on urban properties, but the end result is realistic and ensures work that needs to be done, will be done.” The plan defers a $450,000 upgrade of Balmoral Hall but allocates money to remedy kerb heights at EA Networks Centre, which are a tripping hazard. The average rate rise across the district is 9.4 per cent, though it will vary depending on where ratepayers live. “It is going to be an interesting year ahead. Council will be doing everything it can to stick to and deliver the work programme,” Mayor Brown said. Council is also looking at other issues that arose from the consultation process, like playground access for the disabled. ashburtondc.govt.nz

Local faces front 2022 voter campaign Local faces are fronting a campaign in the Ashburton district encouraging people to stand and vote in the local elections later this year.

Ashburton District Council Chief Executive Hamish Riach said the campaign features some well-known people, and their photographs were taken at various spots around the district.

Mr Riach said none of the people featured in the campaign were standing for a position themselves. “But they are keen to lend their support to this important message, and highlight issues such as supporting the local economy, rural communities, opportunities for young people and looking after our environment.” Alongside the campaign, the Council has also launched a new website for the election period - voteashburton.nz - that will provide information for voters and candidates. Donkey show comes to new life Malcolm Hopwood There are people who make an ass of themselves, but Michael Hurst does it by accident. Hurst, a celebrated New Zealand actor, will present his oneman show, The Golden Ass, at the Ashburton Event Centre next Thursday. Hurst has freely adapted a classic work written by Roman playwright, Apuleius, 2000 years ago and given it his personal interpretation. It’s the story of Lucius, a young man driven by sexual desire and insatiable curiosity who’s accidentally transformed into a donkey. What follows is a series of misadventures in a wicked world of witches, bandits, virgins, cultists, slaves, circuses, soldiers, pastry-cooks, prostitutes and priests. The Golden Ass is described as the original donkey show, inspiring such literary giants as Shakespeare, Boccaccio, Cervantes, Rabelais and Keats.

“It’s a fable as Lucius witnesses all the foibles of human behaviour and learns a lesson,” Hurst said. “The Ashburton audience will love the humour, pathos, the bawdiness and burlesque.” He directs and performs because of the buzz it gives him. “I do all these shows because I love it,” he said. Hurst calls himself a story-teller and The Golden Ass returns him to the art of telling a story. “What I’m doing is sharing a special moment with a group of people.” He’s performed Tom Scott’s Daylight Atheist at The Ashburton Event Centre before so he knows its features but, in his 25 venue tour around New Zealand, he’s played in spaces, sheds and, this week, an opera house. “I can do this show anywhere,” he said. While it’s a challenge to walk on stage and know he’s the only performer, Hurst is familiar with engaging an audience. “As they respond, I react,” he said. “It’s an uplifting experience. “The Golden Ass is a show that Ashburton people will thoroughly enjoy,” he said.

KiwiRail weeding out plans for weeds Malcolm Hopwood

KiwiRail is “working on a plan for weeds” that keep growing on its land in Ashburton. In a response to criticism from Ashburton District councillor Carolyn Cameron, KiwiRail’s southern network services manager, Mark Heissenbuttel, confirmed plans will be finalised in about four weeks’ time. “KiwiRail has begun stepping up its planning for weed clearance for the rail corridor area around Ashburton,” he said. “We are working with Ash-

burton District Council to set priorities for an enhanced programme.” Heissenbuttel also said he’s committed to looking at what work is needed immediately south of the Ashburton River bridge. Cameron said she has received a lot of complaints around the council table about the weeds on KiwiRail-owned land. The council has tried to contact KiwiRail to tidy up its act as “it’s making our town look scruffy,” she said. Heissenbuttel did confirm that KiwiRail and the Rail Heritage Trust are working with the district council “to consider the way forward” for the heritage bridge that provides foot traffic from East to West Streets.

World Lions president to open Methven walkway Malcolm Hopwood A walkway that began as a scrub trail will be officially opened by a world leader in Methven tomorrow. The world president of Lions Clubs International, Brian Sheehan, will cut a ribbon during a three-hour visit to Mid Canterbury. Pioneer work in developing the walkway was carried out by Methven resident, George Currie, with members of Methven Lions taking over during the last three years. During that time they’ve extended the five kilometre track by another three kilometres and laid an all-weather surface to enable recreational walkers, including people with disabilities, to use it. In the past few months Lions members have planted 3000 native trees, shrubs and tussock to beautify the surrounding area. The walkway starts at Mount Harding Road and its circuit extends around Methven. Lions member and convenor of Brian Sheehan’s visit, Mac McElwain, said, in the future, the club

intends to extend the walkway around the golf club by another four kilometres. “We upgraded it for locals and to attract visitors. It’s there for the good of Methven people,” McElwain said. Sheehan, from Minnesota in the United States, was elected world president late last month and the New Zealand visit is his first engagement. While in Methven, he’ll be choppered to Mt Hutt, weather permitting, attend a luncheon at Mount Hutt Memorial Hall and open the walkway. “His visit is a reward for the 70 members who’ve made our club work over the years,” McElwain said.

Warriors’ homecoming truly electric

F

or all you Warriors’ rugby league naysayers, who enjoy taking the proverbial out of the Auckland-based team, and often with a racial undertone, let’s get those tired jokes out of the way from the get-go. Save you the effort. You know what I mean. Jokes like: What does a Warriors’ fan do after winning the premiership? Turns the Play Station off. Why can’t the Warriors have dogs? Because they can’t hold a lead. Why did the dying man request that the Warriors be his pallbearers? So, they could let him down one more time. Ouch. Well, yawn, yawn to be honest because that’s almost been part and parcel of the Warriors since they arrived back in 1995. Some have called them a disaster of a club, which should be a top five regular in the NRL

Daryl Holden competition but can’t even make the generous top eight playoffs and instead scratches around in the lower half of the ladder. Sadly, it is also true that some of the Warriors’ biggest success has been their ability to generate headlines for the wrong reasons. All of that has been desperately disappointing for someone like myself, who has followed and reported on league from club to international level since the late 1980s. I’ve also had a family involvement with the sport, with a brother being the CEO of New Zealand Rugby League and a sister in-law being the team doctor for the Kiwis.

They’re a team, and it’s a sport, I’ve always had a connection with. It started in Invercargill in the late 1980s when I was a publicity person for Southland Rugby League, tasked with generating media interest and excitement in the local club scene. I loved it. Loved the people, their passion and the very basic grassroots and working-class nature of the code. And on Sunday, my love for the game and the Warriors almost went through a reincarnation when I attended their much-awaited first home fixture in three years at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland. It was their first home game in 1038 days since August 2019 when Covid-19 pandemic border restrictions meant they had to live and play in Australia. Agreeing to do so kept the NRL competition going because if the Warriors had opted to return home, having decided they

couldn’t play and live away from family and friends for so long, and thereby deny home games for their fans and commercial returns for the club, then the NRL competition would have folded because of very strict competition commercial requirements from the paymaster broadcasters. So, the Warriors dug deep for the national rugby league by playing away in what was unprecedented for any professional team anywhere on the planet. And on Sunday, a sell-out crowd said thank you in an electric, almost raucous sporting atmosphere, the like of which I have only experienced once before. That other occasion also involved the Warriors. It came in their NRL debut in 1995. It was the only other time I’ve been to an Auckland home game, which was why I decided pretty quickly that I’d return for Sunday’s clash when their return

home was confirmed. I’m glad I made the effort because the atmosphere was spine-tingling. From Dave Dobbyn singing his classic songs before kick-off, to the frenzied reaction from their fans as the Warriors made their entrance through the tunnel from the No 2 ground, as they did for their first-ever NRL match in 1995, it was a massive tick all round. In comparison, the All Blacks’ test rugby win over Ireland at Eden Park the previous night was a very distant second in terms of atmosphere. The fact that the Warriors, feeding off that passionate backing, beat the Wests Tigers 22-2 to halt a seven-match losing streak, just made it even more memorable. Yes, it may’ve been the 15th team on the competition table beating the 14th, but, really, in the circumstances, that didn’t matter. To anyone.

Bring the greenfields back to the table

I

t’s already the site of one of the jewels in Mid Canterbury’s crown, but the old industrial area which now houses the EA Networks Centre should be so much more. And for that reason, perhaps it’s time to sit down and bring the greenfield project back onto the discussion table – especially given the potential of an equity partner sitting in the wings with a little extra cash to invest. The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union’s windfall from New Zealand Rugby’s inking of a deal with Silver Lake could be the boost the once highly touted, but now seemingly forgotten, project needs. A purpose-built sporting arena, able to house a multitude of sporting codes in a new-look, vibrant location – sounds like a winner, doesn’t it?

Matt Markham For a while a number of years back it was a hot topic. Visions and ideas floated around the district of exactly what it could be and what it could involve – but it’s seemingly fallen on deaf ears in recent years with a number of other big projects under way or waiting in the wings. With the developments in the rugby world and the potential for Mid Canterbury to have a new home with state-of-the-art facilities from which to operate, the wheels must surely start turning at some point soon. Who knows, the Ashburton

Club and MSA might want to get involved too? Their recent financial woes have been well documented, but little discussion has been aired about the slice of paradise they hold ownership of on Racecourse Road.

We’re a proud sporting region with plenty to cheer about and plenty to get behind and the EA Networks Centre on its own has opened up a world of possibilities in what we are capable of comfortably hosting here in Mid Canterbury. Any further extension to that through a sports arena that would have most other regions feeling a little jealous is the obvious next required step. So, why wait? Let’s get it moving.

This year’s Cox Plate trophy arrived in Christchurch on Tuesday and will make a guest appearance at today’s Ashburton Racing Club meeting.

Cox Plate stops over in Ashburton Matt Markham One of the most prized trophies in the sport of horse racing will make a whirlwind stop in Ashburton today. The illustrious Cox Plate Trophy will be a special guest at today’s Ashburton Racing Club meeting at the Ashburton Racecourse, as the trophy goes on tour in New Zealand to celebrate the country’s proud history in one of the great races of the world turf. The Moonee Valley Racing Club, who host the race each year, have brought the trophy onto New Zealand shores to help promote the Cox Plate Carnival later this year and to re-establish many historic and famous connections that the race has with Kiwis. “Phar Lap, Beau Vite, Rising Fast, Redcraze, Dulcify, Red Anchor, Bonecrusher, Super Impose, Octagonal, Might And Power, Sunline and So You Think. “They are just some of the champion New Zealand thoroughbreds who have won the Cox Plate – some more than once. We will tell their stories as we continue to celebrate a decorated Centenary of the Cox Plate,” the Mooney Valley Racing Club said earlier this week.”

Racing fans will have the opportunity throughout today’s meeting at Ashburton to get up close and personal with the Cox Plate and have photos taken with it as well as go in with a chance to win an all-inclusive experience at this year’s Cox Plate Carnival including flights and accommodation. As well as being at Ashburton, the Cox Plate will also be at Te Rapa on Saturday. “The pop-up activations at Ashburton and Te Rapa will allow us to engage with New Zealand Racing fans in a new and exciting way.” Also included on the itinerary is a stop at the famed Phar Lap Raceway to acknowledge one of racing’s greats. Meanwhile, the Ashburton Racing Club will host a bumper 11-race card at today’s winter meeting with good sized fields and competitive racing across the day. The meeting gets underway at the unusually early time of 10.32am for the first race with the final race of the day scheduled for 4.12pm. Featured is the $35,000 Winter Cup Trial ahead of the annual Grand National Carnival at Riccarton early next month. Locally trained mare, Madam Sequoia features in the acceptances for the 1400m event for Sarah and Matt Smith, looking to continue her good association with her home track.

Southern stay staunch, Methven gain promotion Matt Markham Ups and downs of Premier Netball. No matter what happens over the next six weeks of Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competitions, there’s no chance of the season being described as dull. There’s been twists and turns at every corner, the revival of two clubs to the elite level of local netball and quality play across all three grades week in, and week out. And Tuesday night’s promotion and relegation matches, ahead of the Championship Round which kicks off tonight, were no exception. Southern kept their head above water and remained in Premier 1 for the final leg, while rivals

Rakaia will remain in the grade below, but the night’s other match provided perhaps one of the upsets of the season when Methven Shearmac advanced from Premier 3 to Premier 2 by beating Hampstead B. Despite rounding down the clock to pick up a 30-24 victory, the task was far from easy for the Southern ladies. So much so, they trailed and looked in big trouble at the end of the first quarter. Rakaia came out jet-propelled, throwing all they had and more at the Southern defence who looked a little startled and unable to settle into a rhythm. They took a three-goal lead into the end of the first quarter, and an upset looked on the cards. Southern coach James Love must have found the switch he forgot to turn on during the break, because the Southern who returned post the first gap in the game was completely different. hands or had been intercepted – they all of a sudden pierced through gaps and found freedom. Shannon Vidler played a vital role in the revival in the second quarter, finding space off the back of some sublime feeding work from Tori Todd and Sarah McCormick, while at the other end the defensive wall was strong and starved the Rakaia shooters and attack of any freedom with the ball in hand. A three-goal deficit became a four-goal lead at halftime, and while Rakaia tried their best to get back in the game, they never truly looked likely after that first break. To their credit, they never gave up, and their final quarter was some of their best netball of the night. They’ll remain in Premier 2 for the final round of the year and be a force to be reckoned with – their ability to push a top-flight team further evidence that they’re a serious netball side with a trophy within grasp. Southern will have to brush themselves off and get ready for

battle again tonight when they take on Hampstead. Meanwhile, a young Methven side showed they are a side of the future, with their display to come from behind and beat Hampstead B in the other promotion and relegation match. Down at halftime, they forced the pressure throughout the third quarter to get themselves back in the game, and while Hampstead looked dangerous on attack, the Methven defence and mid-court had an answer for every question, and kept them at bay as they turned a 14-17 score at halftime into a 34-28 victory by the final whistle. Tonight’s opening matches of the final round will be highlighted by Premier 1 favourites, Celtic, looking to kick off on the right foot against Mt Somers in the final match of the night, while it’s a baptism by fire for the Methven Shearmac team who take on Ashburton College A in Premier 2. Down in Premier 3, newcomers Hampstead B will be out to brush off the disappointment of Tues-

The wait is finally over It’s taken seven years, but the Ashburton MSA Petanque Club can finally lay claim to victory over Papanui. Since 2015, the local club has lined up to take on the Christchurch based club in an annual challenge, but up until this year it’s been futile as Papanui have proved too strong and claimed victory in the Silver Challenge Tray. Until this year, that is. Last weekend the club trekked up the main drag to Christchurch to square off again, and this year came home winners. In a serious turn of fortunes, they didn’t just win either, it was a domination with a 55-29 final score, in favour of the Ashburton MSA side. Ashburton edged ahead in the doubles match-ups, winning 36-24 – but really hit their stride in triples play, winning that overall tie 19-5 to secure the victory. Great weather again last weekend saw a bumper crowd head down to the Brandon. Taking centre stage were the Presidents Trophy and plate semi-finals. First-up Peter Walker and Chris Lovelock had a ding dong battle. Peter shot off with a great start, level par for the front nine. Chris battled hard in the back nine to close the gap, but Peter just held on for a win. In the other game Brent MacGregor and Brian Nuttall had a game of “to me, to you” as they both tried their hardest to give holes to each other. In the end Nutts managed to give more holes away, so Brent will now face Peter in the final. Do I really want to make a prediction? Well Peter was sixth reserve at the start of the comp and took out the top seed first up, so I think it has his name on it, but Arkright might have something to say about that. In the Plate, Jordy Bird shot a superb 77 to beat Matt Tait and Paddy used his shots well to overcome Hoppy. This sets up another intriguing final. Can Jordy shoot in the 70’s again? Highly unlikely! Both are known as quiet and unassuming golfers and neither are really competitive, so it could be a bit of a damp squib final. We will see. Player of the day in the stableford round was Brendon Davidson, 37 points on countback from David Rush. I know! We reckon they both must have played 27 holes. One shot back were AJ, Hilary, Terry M, Bev, Young Seb and Tom. Dave Morry picked up over $100 for two 2s and Hilary picked up $140 for the net eagles. Top work! After golf we had a great night watching the test match. Around 40 players and partners turned up. The first try scorer bet went south when Ireland scored first. Karaoke was cancelled, because, who knew Elvis was also a pool shark. Elvis partnered the wonderful Hilary Lovett, and they smashed all comers to pick up the pool championship prize. We had a lovely supper, great speeches and a boys against girls scrum (don’t ask!). It was a wonderful night, well done to Captain Tom and everyone involved, must do it again soon. Pennants on Sunday was not a great day for Ashburton, only the Holmes A team flew the flag with a great 8 to 4 win over hosts Timaru. The B team slipped to a loss against Point. Shane and the Alex boys fell short against Rakaia. The Old dogs winning streak came to an end with a 1 point loss to Temuka and the Pups are being very consistent with yet another loss to Mayfield. Oh well, we can try again in two weeks’ time. Good golfing.

The Ashburton Golf Club has been a busy place recently, with the Presidents Trophy games front and centre. So, we had a van full of very happy people on the return journey. Having trialled Saturday play over the last three months we have decided to make this a permanent change. Club members have turned out in good numbers on a regular basis, and we have attracted a few newcomers to try the game. There will be Saturdays when the Club is hosting an event, but you are most welcome to come and watch those games to learn more. We are now wearing caps with our logo

which match well with our shirts. Our next competition is the Club Men’s and Women’s Singles being held on Sunday, July 24. Remember you are most welcome to come and watch competition games, and also to join us in play on any Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday at 1pm, at 115 Racecourse Road. After a quiet couple of weeks on the pistes, the Silver Tray Trophy was played against Papanui in Christchurch on Sunday with 12 of our members competing. Ashburton was victorious with a total of 55 points over Papanui’s 29, after playing doubles and then triples. This is the first time we have won the trophy,

Ashburton Writers’ Group. The quotation was –“The Pen is Mightier than the Sword”. The discussion point was from Stephen King – There is no Idea Dump, no Story Central, no Island of the Buried Bestsellers. Good story ideas seem to come quite literally from nowhere, sailing at you right out of the empty sky, two previous unrelated ideas come together and make something new under the sun. Your job isn’t to find these ideas but to recognize them when they show up. This idea caused a lot of discussion among members. The assignment was “The Uninvited Guest”. Members wrote of not okay, wedding couple, dementia, foul odour, new apartment – spider, nether regions, oxymorons, waking at night, ghost, demanding grandchildren. The instant exercise was to create a dialogue between two characters who hold different points of view e.g. an argument. To make sure each character has its own voice (way of speaking) and any topic or situation. Members responded to this challenge. The July assignment is “you wake up from a six-month coma”. Wakanui Women’s Institute members met for their June meeting at President Juliana’s home. There was a special welcome to our visitor Natisha.

Display: Honey related item: There were many interesting items brought along, one being a special knife for removing beeswax off the honeycomb. Members also brought along recipes using honey. Mid Canterbury Federation Half Yearly meeting will be held at Wakanui on September 23. We congratulated Judy Vaughan the new National President of Women’s Institute and wished her well for her term in office. National AGM/ Conference: Dianne Carter gave the meeting a very full and interesting report on the recent conference. Dianne was congratulated on her second placing for a knitted hat in the National Handcraft competitions. Members catered for the Vintage Ploughing match held recently, there were 40 competitors and spectators, the Ploughing Match committee thanked our W.I. Margaret Cullimore showed members a Tea Towel that she had been given in memory of the Late Margaret Timms, a past member of our W.I. Lots of quotes were printed on the Tea Towel that the Late Margaret Timms had said over the years. Cup Day will be held on July 29, members offering to enter table entries. Afternoon tea brought the meeting to a close.

Tough times can happen to anyone… Darren was a self-employed painter until Covid halted his business and his landlord sold his home. Darren, his partner Miriana, and their children were suddenly homeless.

I

n conjunction with its local private supporters, the trustees of the Trott’s Community Garden Charitable Trust have made the difficult decision to no longer proceed with its capital-raising efforts to raise the funds required for Trott’s Community Garden Charitable Trust to acquire Trott’s Gardens and to secure the future of these internationally recognised gardens into community ownership. Over the past two years, the current trust board has put considerable time and effort into promoting and integrating the gardens into the community. This included the completion of a full analysis and feasibility report to support funding applications. The trust received tremendous local financial support from private donors, Advance Ashburton, the Lion Foundation, Community Trust Mid & South Canterbury and the Ashburton Rotary Club. Disappointingly, the trust’s application to the Lotteries Community Facilities Fund was unsuccessful, leaving a significant funding gap to secure the future community ownership of these unique gardens. Over the past six months, the trust has pursued a number of alternative funding and structuring options, but these discussions have been unsuccessful. Given this, the trust will now be wound up and the gardens will be marketed for private sale. The trustees, along with its private supporters, are hopeful that a buyer will carry on the legacy created by Alan and Catherine Trott. At this time, the trust would like to thank all supporters of the gardens, including our extensive volunteer network, funders and donors, and the many visitors and users of the gardens.
