Wagon derailed A goods train wagon derailed in Ashburton around 1.30pm yesterday. The wheels came slightly off the track due to a junction problem and the road was closed for a period of time while the rest of the train was moved. A crane from Christchurch has righted the carriage, and a KiwiRail representative said the carriage will be parked in the Ashburton railyards and inspected for any lasting damage.
Annual plan Environment Canterbury will finalise its annual plan and strike the rates at its council meeting on Wednesday. The draft annual plan which was subject to public consultation in March, highlighted three topics for public consideration – proposed changes to the bus fare structure, flood recovery and protection, and future funding for action in response to climate change.

Milestone for Haven Daniel Alvey The ground has been broken at Haven Housing’s first new build project at Mona Square. Ashburton District Council Mayor Neil Brown said it was an example of how local governments and private companies can work together, with this project delivering “a local solution for local people”.
The Haven Housing Trust has leased the land from the council for 50 years at a dollar a year. The project consists of 17, 50sqm homes for the elderly which will be rented at an affordable rate. “They (the homes) would be about $200 per week,” said founding trustee Jackie Girvan, adding the average rental rate in Ashburton was about $250 per week. These prices exclude the cost of the utilities. Girvan said the project has been a long time coming. The need for low budget housing is on the rise with more peo-
ple getting to retirement age, not having owned a home, or moving to fixed income and having less money to spend on a home. The project has received great community funding. One example was the Braided Rivers Community Trust which is funding the heat pumps for the units. For two years now the trust has been operating nine properties at Cameron Courts where there is that were given to them from the council. The project is expected to take 12 months, but building industry supply chain issues may mean design alterations, such as
Traffic delays Bridge Street from the Netherby roundabout to Seafield Road will be under temporary traffic light management this week while contractors remove a wastewater tank near the entrance to the Hampstead Sports Club. The work is part of final works in a $10 million new sewer pipeline project that adds huge capacity to Ashburton’s wastewater network. The traffic light management will operate between 7.30am until 5.30pm, until Friday when the work is expected to be complete. Residents who live along Bridge Street will be able to enter and exit their properties as usual.
switching Gib board for a MDF alternative. As yet the trust hasn’t made a decision if it will be building more units across the district with Girvan wanting to get Mona Square finished first. If the project is successful the trust would like to expand to more sites throughout the district. The trust has a goal to reach 100 homes for the elderly. Girvan said the trust had chosen to focus on the elderly for its social housing projects, with Kainga Ora and the council putting more families in their social houses.

Attendance target ‘off the mark’ Daniel Alvey
to be a parent “ Ifyouyouarearenotgoing going to be your son or daughter’s best friend.
Ashburton College principal, Ross Preece, is fed up with persistent offenders who wag school. “It’s parents not doing their parental role,” he said. Preece was responding to new goals set by the Ministry of Education which raise attendance levels from, 60 per cent to 70 per cent. He says they miss the mark. “It’s a pretty low target but I don’t think they’re targeting the right thing,” he said. Instead he points the finger at parents. It’s time for them to crack down on their kids’ behaviour and, if they have a sick day, ensure they don’t watch Netflix on the couch, he said. “The problem is not the percentage, it’s the persistent offenders, condoned by the parents.” Preece gives a personal example. He recalls having a conversation with his teenage son. “He was feeling poorly and my wife said ‘that’s
fine, you can stay home’. But she unplugged his PlayStation, turned off his computer and said ‘here’s a book to read’. “Amazingly he came right and decided that going to school with his mates was a better option.” Preece would like to see a programme that teaches parents of older kids how best they can be managed. “They really need to teach parents that, if you’re going to be a parent, you’re not going to be your son or daughter’s best friend.”

Flu season hits, and hard By Dylan Walker
Three Rivers Health has had its practice hit hard with the “hiss and roar” of flu season in addition to Covid. Ashburton GP spokeswoman and senior doctor at Three Rivers Health Dr Penny Holdaway said her practice is currently understaffed and not able to keep up with an influx of calls. She recommended getting vaccinated and unless symptoms are particularly severe, people should
hold off from contacting health professionals to avoid overwhelming them. If people are short of breath, have chest pains, vomiting or concern from a prior condition, then some concern is necessary, otherwise they recommend staying at home and drinking plenty of fluids, she said. “It’s common sense advice. Stay home and look after yourself, and get vaccinated, both for Covid and the flu.” Ashburton District Councillor
and pharmacy owner Carolyn Cameron said there’s absolutely cause for concern, and the Ministry of Health anticipates a troublesome flu season. A combination of borders opening up and ongoing Covid healthcare means that health workers are worried. The last few years have seen much lower influenza rates, due to worldwide Covid restrictions, mask-wearing and increased hand-washing, but now restrictions are looser it’s that much

more important to stay safe, she said. Pharmac notes the restrictions over the pandemic will have lowered people’s immunity to the flu, which might result in more severe symptoms. Cameron said there’s been a much larger uptake in flu vaccinations, likely due in part to the government’s advertising campaign to encourage people to do so. “If you haven’t yet, get vaccinated.” She also recommends washing hands and staying indoors to re-
duce infection risk. The Ministry of Health’s website on influenza is worried because of borders and looser restrictions, and also recommends staying home and drinking plenty of water. While influenza may have similar symptoms to Covid, they can be caught independently, and it’s important to get vaccinated against both. If you haven’t yet, contact your local GP or pharmacy to avoid the risk.

Thieves hit twice in one day Lili Haydon There has been a double burglary of sorts with some items stolen twice on the same day It started when a Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number PRD8A, was stolen from a property in Allenton in the early hours of June 7. The offenders have driven north and dumped some of the stolen vehicle’s contents at the Rakaia River later that morning before driving off again. The contents were found by Rakaia resident Skye Goodgame who had spotted the stolen goods while out walking with her children. Goodgame said that among the pile was jumper leads, knives, fire extinguisher, a brick of ammunition, shovel, ropes, first aid kits and more. “I rang the police straight away and was told they were held up
with something, but would get there soon,” Goodgame said. “I left at 12.40pm to walk home as my son was getting cold. “I drove back and got there at 12.55pm and noticed someone had been in that 15 minutes and taken the jumper leads, ammunition, shovel, a folding knife and some tools.” By matching the name on an item in the pile with a search on social media she had also managed to track down the vehicle’s owner while she waited. By the time the vehicle’s owner arrived at the scene at 1pm his belongings were gone again. Goodgame and the owner cleared the rest of items. “We were there maybe 20 minutes clearing up and police still hadn’t been.” Goodgame felt terrible that she had left the scene. “I couldn’t wait any longer with my four-year-old, in hindsight, I wish I had waited as stuff wouldn’t have been stolen, but I wasn’t to know,” Goodgame said. The owner of the vehicle confirmed police have not yet located his vehicle.

A Lion Foundation grant has secured salaries for the Mid Canterbury Youth Charitable Trust (MCYCT) until May 2023. The grant is one of 11 Lion Foundation grants, totalling $202,628, handed out to Mid Canterbury organisations by the Braided Rivers Community Trust. Among its ideals, the MCYCT, which runs the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy, aims to turn young boys into healthy young men, work on attitudes and self-control, teach them to respect their families and those around them, understand their own bodies and improve fitness. Manager of MCYCT and the Boxing Academy,
Eion Johnson, is grateful for the $35,000 he’s received which will go towards meeting salary costs for himself, his head coach/youth mentor and his intern/trainee male coach. “It provides certainty for the staff and the hundreds of young people who we work with and use our facilities,” he said. “In addition to fees, we rely on grants such as this one and private sponsorship.” About 500 young people are involved in the youth trust and 160 in the boxing academy. Other recipients were; Ashburton Housing and Support Trust ($50,830), Basketball Mid Canterbury ($32,000), Ashburton District Council – Tinwald Reserve Board ($20,000), YMCA of South and Mid Canterbury ($15,000), Ashburton Youth Café Charitable Trust ($15,000), Methven Rugby Football Club ($15,000), Haketere Multi Cultural Council ($12,000), Connecting Mid Canterbury Charitable Trust ($4950), Age Concern Ashburton ($2348), RNZSPCA, Ashburton Centre ($500).

By Dylan Walker Tomorrow is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It’s designed to let people know about the physical and psychological distress undergone by an unfortunately high number of elders worldwide, typically by family members. President of Age Concern, Ashburton Jan McClelland said there’s always a large concern about elder abuse, especially in Ashburton, and noted that financial abuse is one of the key incidents to watch out for. “Many elders are vulnerable and may not notice abuse at all.” The branch, located at 206 Cameron Street, is also organising some static displays in the Arcade for the week, with relevant information and what to watch for. In a lot of cases it’s people around them who notice be-
fore the elder does, and even so they may not want to seek help or hurt family, wanting to avoid a spotlight, she said. “It’s all about awareness.” Age Concern New Zealand’s website includes that elder abuse is prevalent in Aotearoa but not often reported, which is what the campaign is aiming
to combat. The NZ Office for Seniors said that roughly one in 10 people in New Zealand will experience some form of elder abuse, especially as it’s tricky to define. Abuse can range from physical danger and violence, all the way to psychological trau-
ma and being taken advantage of. It also includes financial abuse, neglect and not providing enough food, housing or medical care. Their primary message is that it’s “not okay”, and are trying to raise awareness to fight the issue. They also encouraged people to speak up if they or someone they know is being abused, and noted that in most cases abusers are someone that the elder knows well, including family members. “Seventy-eight per cent of elder abuse comes from family members.” Some contacts for those worried include a free 24-hour confidential helpline in the Elder Abuse Response Service (EARS), or 0800 32 668 65. Alternatively, text 5032 or email support@elderabuse.nz. If it’s a serious enough case, contact the police at 105.

From the sheep’s back to the shop Daniel Alvey Ever wanted to know how your wool gets from sheep to a woollen jumper? A Mid Canterbury author and her furry friend are here to tell you how. She’s Christine Taylor, and her furry friend is a west highland terrier called Jock. They’ve got a new book called Jock Visits the Neighbours, and it’s all about exploring the process of wool production in the region. “It’s about getting kids to understand where the wool comes from.” It’s Taylor’s fourth children’s book in a series, where Jock goes on different adventures around the farm and rural New Zealand. “I can’t get anywhere now without someone coming up to me and saying, ‘I love your books’,” Taylor said. “It’s been a lot of fun. It has taken hours and hours to put together, but I feel very proud with the end result, a quality product, and all New Zealand made.” Taylor was approached to write the book by Campaign for Wool,
Christine Taylor, Jock and the team from Mainland Wool, who help transport and process wool from across the region. which has the Prince of Wales as patron. The book is part of the Wool in Schools programme, which is an initiative that aims to help school children understand
wool’s place in our lives. Two shipping containers were converted to a classroom to travel the country and teach the kids about wool. Schools can register online to be apart of the tour.
The book is family-focused, with Taylor’s grandchildren also making appearances in the story alongside Jock. “With the kids in there, it’s also talking about farming families,’’

she said. “How hard they work and how the little ones are involved in that, and that responsibility from a young age.” The book is available in Ashburton book stores now.
Stivens in bid to halt race closure Jonathan Leask Sheryl Stivens still hopes to overturn a decision to close a stretch of stockwater race With work on the closure already under way, Stivens has launched a last ditch appeal to have the decision the Ashburton District Council made in March overturned. “We haven’t given up yet,” Stivens said. Stivens went before the council on June 1 to plead her case and was told that to rescind the council’s decision she needs four councillors to sign a notice of motion to the chief executive and the council would rehear that decision.
Sheryl Stivens attended the Ashburton District Council meeting with her supporters looking to overturn a decison to close the stockwater race running through her property. PHOTO JONATHAN LEASK/LDR “I’m halfway through ringing the councillors and I have half the names I need so hopefully I will get the other half,” she said. A pettion calling for the race to remain open has also received over 200 signatures.
Stivens previously avoided the race closure in 2018 but the council received a new application, supported by five of the six affected property owners, to close the race at the end of 2020. Stivens again opposed the clo-
sure, expressing ecological concerns about the loss of biodiversity and fresh water ecological. Council infrastructure group services manager Neil McCann said that in light of the objections the council commissioned an independent ecological assessment of the race – the first time it has taken that step in almost 20 years. “The assessment determined the ecological values of the race to be low, with particularly low stream health scores, and should council decide to proceed with the race closure, six recommendations were provided,” McCann said. The recommendations included translocation of fish and any other significant aquatic life from Willowby water race into New Willowby water race which McCann said is the other leg of the water race network that will remain open and isn’t a new race.
On March 16, the council considered the request, which included the ecological assessment, and approved the closure of the stock water race. McCann said that closure work had already commenced to relocate the fish and other aquatic life in the race, but the work has been temporarily paused to allow Stivens’ objection procedure to take place. That work is likely to resume as early as next week if Stivens is unable to get two more councillors to come to her cause and have the decision rescinded.

Excited to now be Kiwi citizens By Pat Deavoll When the Guardian approached Indian 2IC Inderjit Singh to talk about his career in the dairy industry he wasn’t keen. His English wasn’t good enough, he reckoned. This was rather endearing. However, his wife Harjit Gaur felt confident enough in her English to speak to us on her husband’s behalf. Her English was very good. The couple originated from the Punjab province, Badala City to be exact. Harjit was a student and Inderjit a teacher at a private school when they got married in 2014. “In India, we had some involvement in the dairy industry as we had two buffalos and four cows which Inderjit hand milked and we supplied the local community,” Harjit said. “When we arrived in New Zealand in 2015, I was still a student, but my husband got
an open work visa on behalf of me, After just a couple of months he got a job kiwifruit picking and pruning, then he got a job on a dairy farm in Invercargill as a farm assistant. He was very happy because he loved the animals, and he had a bit of an agricultural background. He loved the technology of the dairy industry eg, the rotary shed for instance, because in India he did only hand milking. Then he decided he would grow his future in the dairy industry. Last month the couple got their residency. “So, we are now Kiwi citizens,” Harjit said. Exciting. “I am working as a support worker but before that, I was in hospitality.” How long has Inderjit been in the 2IC that position? “For the last couple of years and before that, he was herd manager here at Waterstone Farm. He was a farm assistant on another farm
before that,” Harjit said. And what made you want to come to NZ? “New Zealand gave us a better opportunity to grow forward. My husband loves dairy farming – it is the high technology, and we have a chance to make a life.” Do you intend to stay in New Zealand? “Of course, we have residency and there is plenty of work here so we are happy and will stay. There is the opportunity to grow our careers here in New Zealand and Inderjit will next become a manager to get his skills up, and after that hopefully, we will become sharemilkers. That’s our plan. “At the moment he is just gaining knowledge about dairy farming,” Harjit said.
Harjit Gaur and Inderjit Singh: making the most of life in New Zealand.

Lincoln raises rank again By Pat Deavoll
Te Whare Wanaka o Aoraki Lincoln University rose four places to 368th of 2462 participating institutions in the latest QS world university rankings and retained its global position in the top 26 per cent of universities. The 2023 ranking is based on data supplied in 2021 across six weighted performance indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, and international students’ ratio, and two non-weighted indicators: employment outcomes and international research network. Lincoln University’s strongest indicator is the international faculty ratio which measures the proportion of faculty members who are international and signals the
university’s strong international appeal to academic staff. The university placed 47th globally. Another key indicator contributing to the university’s global reputation was its score for citations per faculty, which increased by 30 per cent, demonstrating a continuing upward trend. Introduced into the performance indicators for the first time in 2023, the unweighted employment outcomes score of 93.6 per cent reflected the high level of employability of Lincoln University’s students and underlines its position as the university with the highest employment rate in Aotearoa. Vice-chancellor professor Grant Edwards said the university’s improved overall performance was very pleasing, especially given the additional 124 institutions joining the QS World University Rankings for 2023.

Team effort to deal with a mountain of waste plastic Pat Deavoll Farm plastics recycler Plasback is helping an Ashburton business solve a daunting problem – cleaning up a massive stockpile of farm waste plastic. Plasback was working with Southern Xpress to bale and remove about 1000 tonnes of silage wrap, silage covers, and baler twine that had been accumulating for several years. The story began in 2018, when the Chinese government banned imports of waste plastic. When it abruptly stopped, it disrupted recyclers around the globe. One that was hit particularly hard was Wastebusters, a charitable trust based in Ashburton that collected a range of farm plastics from farms throughout Mid Canterbury. The loss of revenue from its exported plastic was enough of a setback that Wastebusters was set to shut down. Coming to the rescue were Brent and Maureen McLaren. The McLarens had the contract to compost the green waste that Wastebusters collected. Rather than lose a big chunk of their income if Wastebusters were to stop trading, they took over its operation. “We provide farmers large wooden bins so they can separate their waste,” Brent McLaren said. “When they are full, we collect the bins from the farm, or they can bring them into our yard. “Since we took over Wastebusters, we have increased the number of bins on farms by 50 per cent. We now have about 1500 bins in circulation. Some large operations have more than
Loading the loose plastic at the Wastebusters site is a messy and time-consuming job.
20 bins on multiple farms.” Wastebusters is providing the plastic at no cost to Plasback, and in turn Plasback is covering the cost of processing it and shipping it overseas. Neither party is making a financial gain, but they are addressing a significant waste issue that could impact the local environment. Another part of the agreement was that Wastebusters had now become Plasback’s collection contractor for Mid Canterbury. This meant it collected silage wrap, silage covers, twine, and other waste plastic from farms using Plasback’s bin and liner system. “Plasback had the capacity to take on the huge job of dealing with Wastebusters’ stockpile. We
collect more than 5000 tonnes of plastic every year and we have both local and overseas partners to recycle the product,” Plasback commercial manager Neal Shaw said. Southern Xpress was playing a vital role in the clean-up effort. The Christchurch company ran a unique mobile baler designed to bale tyres to ship overseas for recycling. It had carried out several contracts for Plasback to bale farm plastic in both the South and North islands.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Doing your homework sounds like a chore, whereas investigating, researching and questing for answers sounds like an adventure. What you call an activity will contribute greatly to your mood about it. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Speaking your mind is a risk that might not accomplish exactly what you want, but if you express what a person feels but cannot explain, it’s valuable. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Messiness may not mean a lack of method. Sometimes, effective processes are a mess, yet still governed by rules they adhere to in a jumble of elegant chaos. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): A problem that’s very real to a 5-year-old may seem ridiculous to a teen and irrelevant to the autonomous adult. Life gets simple when you skip the mundane struggles, opting only for the timeless ones. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): People sum one another up with quick judgments and categorise accordingly because no one has time to go into the complexities of every person they meet. In this, you proudly project certain qualities. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): All matter is energy condensed to a slow vibration, but the rate in which you are getting what you want seems to be particularly lethargic, and you will be forgiven, if not rewarded, for efforts to invigorate it. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Performing teaches you something about yourself, but it’s better done in real-life interactions with people in the same room. The self-conscious trap of watching yourself will distort and ruin the lesson. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): The nexus of space and time where you are now is the only actionable platform in your universe. You can seize, conquer, cuddle, sing or strut it; just don’t give it over to the undeserving. It’s yours to use. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Challenge yourself and push the boundaries of what you think is doable, acceptable and typical. Being willing to do this and then courageous enough to follow through expands you as a person. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): When what’s being said has no relevance or interest to you, act quickly, changing the channel, setting something down or walking away to find what matters. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): While life mostly consists of trades (oxygen for carbon dioxide, work for money, money for food, loyalty for security), today you’ll revel in an unusual scenario – the joy of a thing that gives and doesn’t take. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There’s a vitality that comes with people paying attention to your ideas. But when everyone is trying to be seen at the same time, the energy implodes on itself. The answer is to work in obscurity, a joy and a freedom.

Covid finally caught up with me W
hen I first diagnosed myself I thought I had the flu. Without consulting Dr Google, I knew I had a head cold, bordering on something worse. My eyes swam freestyle, my head pounded like waves breaking against the Hakatere rocks and I was glad the weekend had arrived. Even my legs ached. I thought twice about grabbing a beer from the fridge in the garage. My knees moved in different directions. It took Kathi to question whether I had the flu. “Don’t trust Wikipedia, have a RAT test,” she said. I hesitated. I was bulletproof. I’d had two Covid jabs and the booster and was trying to persuade my pharmacy that I needed another. I’d mixed with friends who’d recovered from Covid, all I had
Malcolm Hopwood was a blocked head that a box of tissues could cure, I believed. So I took the RAT test to prove I was invincible. But it came back, not with one line, but two. The pandemic had struck. I didn’t believe it and thought I’d have another test the following morning. I wanted to see Downton Abbey starring all those gloriously stuffed shirts that had propelled Harry and Meagan to California. But that night I ached below the plimsoll line, and knew this virus was different. Kathi was right. The pandemic had struck. I mention this because Covid
isn’t going away and, for some, it’s disguised as the common cold. Winter has arrived. It’s the cold and flu season, but Covid is playing second drop. It seduced Kane Williamson. It sent me to the pavilion. Yes, there’s a message. Have a RAT test at home and ensure there’s one next to the hand sanitiser at work.
in exile and I’d missed Downton Abbey. Poto Williams and I were the only ones in denial. The problem with Covid is that it’s unique. No-one quite has the same symptoms. For me it was fatigue and a head that belonged to Joseph Parker after 12 rounds. While you may have a chance to catch up on library books, you
quite has the same symptoms. “ No-one For me it was fatigue and a head that
belonged to Joseph Parker after 12 rounds.
Probably too many people are wandering Ashburton with Covid disguised as a headache. Once I knew, I realised I’d infected my wife and close friend. I was back in a bubble, like Napoleon
read the same page five times over, then fall asleep and drop your coffee mug. For Kathi, who has underlying health issues, it was more serious. Very quickly Healthline, the
Ministry of Health, GP spokesperson, Penny Holdaway and Wise’s Pharmacy, came to her aid with anti-viral medication. It saved her. We appreciated their intervention. I write this because help is available. If you’re suffering from Covid and you need assistance, it’s there. Use it. Suffering in silence is as futile as refusing painless at the dentist. Our friend, who I infected, survived on three homemade pies, daily calls and a cellar full of bubbles. I’m back at work, wiser, less wobbly, but grateful for the medical assistance Ashburton has to offer. My first purchase this week is more RAT tests, Panadol, a finger pulse oximeter and a page turner in case I keep reading the prologue to Jack Reacher 100 times over.

Southern fall at semi-final hurdle Southern were unable to repeat their late-game heroics of the past few weeks, when they met Glenmark Cheviot at Hinds on Saturday. At the end of 80 minutes the scoreboard read 28-17 in the visitors’ favour, and in a touch of irony it was a Mid Canterbury lad who banged the final nail in Southern’s coffin, with Matthew Holmes dotting down in the 79th minute of the match for Glenmark Cheviot. The North Canterbury side will now meet Saracens in the final of the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country competition, after that team beat Prebbleton in a 31-29 thriller. In the Hinds clash, the first half was a battle of attrition, with Glenmark Cheviot scoring first with a try to Corrigan Harnett, and never relinquishing that lead. Thomas Middleton’s penalty was all Southern could muster in the first half, with Glenmark Cheviot adding another try for a 10-3 halftime scoreline. After the visitors added another try and a penalty, Makasiale Kauvanua came to light with an excellent individual try, which Middleton converted, and Southern went into the last quarter of the match still well in contention. Just a few minutes later, though, Nicholas Hyde went over for Glenmark Cheviot, and at 23-10 the mountain was looking daunting for Southern. Angus McKenzie provided some hope with a try, with Middleton adding the extras to get within converted try range with less than ten minutes to go, and the local fans were giving their boys full voice, but Holmes’ try finally dashed Southern’s hopes of defending their title.

Pulse wrap up super year on court The Pulse chose the perfect time to put a full 60 minute performance together when they blitzed the Stars in the ANZ Premiership final on Sunday night. The Pulse beat the Stars 56-37 in Wellington, to win their third title and become the most successful side since the Premiership started in 2017. It was expected to be a close grand final but it quickly became a one sided-affair when the Pulse got off to a flying start to take a 15-6 lead after the first quarter. Going into the game the Pulse had the best defensive record of the competition – conceding a miserly 49 goals per match on average. Restricting the Stars to just 37 goals last night was a phenomenal effort. Stars’ midcourters Gina Crampton and Mila Reuelu-Buchanan had great difficulty getting the ball to their shooters. The Pulse must have studied the Stars closely after their elimination final win over the Mystics last week because the Pulse didn’t give the Stars any rope to do what they did so well in that game. Pulse coach Yvette McCausland-Durie said their strong start put scoreboard pressure on the Stars. “And we actually had everybody on task at the same time and that’s been our challenge all season. “I’m really proud that they’ve been able to put together a performance that we’re really proud of.
Celebration time for the Pulse after the ANZ Premiership FInal. “During the week we made lots of disciplined efforts around what we thought was going to make a difference and we stayed focused on our game and the task that we wanted to be better at,” McCausland-Durie said. “Everyone held their head for a very young group to be that disciplined and make the decisions they made.”
Six new faces in All Blacks Six new players have been named in the All Blacks squad to face Ireland in a three match series next month. Folau Fakatava, Stephen Perofeta, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Leicester Fainga’anuku, Aidan Ross and Pita Gus Sowakula are the new faces in the 36-man squad. Veteran halfback TJ Perenara has missed out alongside fellow 2019 World Cup number nine Brad Weber with Fakatava, Aaron Smith and Finlay Christie making up the three halfback spots. Jack Goodhue returns to the squad after missing the 2021 season through injury. One up, one down on the hockey turf

Top weekend for Mid Canterbury sides By Jaime Pitt-Mackay
It was a winning weekend for the district’s senior men’s football teams with one team extending their unbeaten run while another posted their first win of the season. The Mid Canterbury United Men’s First Team will have to wait before getting an opportunity to increase their points tally in the New World Premiership, after their away match at Parklands United was postponed. The game had presented a golden opportunity for the first team to add to the three points they had amassed, after two
close losses over the long weekend. The Methven FC Seniors finally broke their winning duck after nine games, defeating Waimak United Division 1 2-1 on the Kendall Park Turf. The win moves the side to four points in pool B of Division 1/2, six points shy of the next closest team, Halswell United 1964s on 10 points. The Mid Canterbury United Reserves were able to extend their hot streak start to the season to nine games, downing the Burwood Pests 4-2 at Burwood Park. They sit comfortably clear at the top of the table with 27 points, six points clear of
UCAFC Mavericks on 21 points. The Mid Canterbury United 17th Grade team were unable to continue their winning start to the season, losing 3-2 to Nomad United 17s at Bishopdale Park in their second game of the season. Goals were aplenty for the 15th and 13th grade sides, with the 15th grade side dominating their Division 3 clash against CBHS Blue, hammering home 10 goals in a 10-3 victory at the Ashburton Domain. Meanwhile in the 13th Grade Division 2, the Mid Canterbury 13th Grade Red Devilz defeated the Parkland United 13 Golds 9-0.
It was far from pretty, but the Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s hockey side made a winning return to the competition after a few weeks on the sidelines on Saturday. It’s been almost a month since the side has played, with the bye, a postponed match due to Covid illness and then Queen’s Birthday weekend, and the cobwebs were in serious need of a good blowout. Up against Harewood for the second time this season and with the Challenge Shield on the line, it took until the dying minutes of the match for Mid Canterbury to put their noses in front and claim the win – which keeps them right in contention for top spot in the Division One competition. In a very strong defensive effort, the Mid Canterbury back end held their side up for the entirety of the match including some solid work in front of the goal from Jacob Gray who produced a number of crucial saves. Down the other end of the turf, it wasn’t happening. Chances were going wide and opportunities were being squandered until there was two minutes left on the clock. Hayden Bonnington worked the ball up the middle and found the stick of Tim Harford, who calmly slotted it past the goalie to put his side in front and win them the match. Meanwhile, it was a tough day at the office for the Mid Canterbury Senior Women’s side. They too took on Harewood – a real competition contender – and were quickly in trouble, conceding two goals. Despite being outplayed across the turf and struggling to get into the match, Mid Canterbury’s moment came when they were down by seven goals. Emma Lill did the brunt of the work to get the ball to Sarah Wilson, who slotted the goal and showed that when on song and things are going right that the side is more than capable of mixing it with the big centre teams.
Mana Man stars in the ring By Melissa Ready The silverware stacked up on the weekend for young boxing star Lucan Taylor-Culshaw. The 19-year-old had just won the Open Elite Heavyweight South Island Golden Glove Championship, and was winding down in the changing room when his name was called again. Head coach and long-time mentor Cornelius Grobler said the team was already so pleased and so happy with the [final] match before finding out Taylor-Culshaw had also won Outstanding Elite Boxer and Most Improved Boxer of the Tournament. He said the weekend felt different. “Usually heading into a match I’m pretty nervous, this weekend I was confident.” Taylor-Culshaw, who’s known as Mana Man at the Mid Canterbury
Boxing Academy, won on a split decision after three rounds and came out with a couple of clips but no big marks on his face, his coach said. “He boxed so well and stuck to our game plan”. The young boxer was modest, but admitted he was pleased with the success. But Taylor-Culshaw’s journey has been far from easy, having lost his last two matches and recently bursting an eardrum. Competing against “way more experienced” boxers in the Elite category, Grobler said he was especially nervous when his prodigy went up against the second best in New Zealand in the final. But Mana Man was not backing down, telling his coach before the competition: “I won’t give up, I’ll come back stronger.” Taylor-Culshaw first joined the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy at
the age of 12, and has been bouncing between rugby and boxing. This is his first year in the Elite category for boxers over 19 years of age and he’s now also an assistant coach. The academy not only coaches boxing but is also a programme for young men, teaching life skills and aiming to mentor men to be champions, Grobler said. Boxing Academy and Charitable Trust Manager Eion Johnson said there are currently 160 enrolled students between members classes and school groups. The academy has strong community support and funding which Johnson said, makes youth work possible. Taylor-Culshaw said he is now looking toward the National Championships in October this year, which are being held in Whanganui.
Lucan Taylor-Culshaw is a Golden Gloves champion.

First training win for Markham Jeremy Markham is hoping the week continues as it started after celebrating the victory of DD’s Super Stuart in the Spectators Bar Trot (2000m) at Addington Raceway on Sunday. Markham is currently in Wellington attempting to defend his Indoor Bowls National Fours title but was able to find time to watch the gelding he trains score his fourth victory, and first for the stable. Previously trained by Markham’s father Carl, the latter was back in the bike on Sunday to steer in his son’s absence, and he made it count, guiding the son of Superfast Stuart to a 3-1/4 length victory. “It was very good. “He has been racing well over the last month or so without much luck,” Markham Senior said. “Sometimes he is his own worst enemy at the start and gets a bit far back. “He had been building up nicely for today and the race conditions suited him.
“He seems to like races over 2000m or a little bit shorter. “Today was the perfect race for him.” Markham is hoping his winning luck continues in his bowling pursuits at the Indoor Nationals at Wellington this week. “I am away playing indoor bowls at the nationals. “I have got a national title to defend later in the week,” he said. “I have been playing since I was 18, but the last five years have been pretty serious. “Last year we were lucky enough to win a national title so I had to make sure I came to Wellington this year to defend it.” While the tournament hasn’t got off to the best start for Markham, his key events don’t start until later in the week. “I qualified for the singles and then went out in the first round at post sections,” he said. “I have got the triples on Wednesday, and fours on Friday.”
Smiles despite the mud from Carl Markham, as he brings DD’s Super Stuart back to the birdcage after scoring at Addington on Sunday, a first-up winning training effort for Jeremy Markham.
