No change to 9.4% rates rise Jonathan Leask Some things have been changed around but rates are still set to rise by an average of 9.4 per cent. The Ashburton District Council ran through the final draft of its annual plan on Wednesday before it goes before the council next week for adoption. Councillors have left no stone unturned for savings or deferrals, but haven’t been able to budge on the 9.4 per cent average rates rise. The council had asked in its consultation if it should reduce services to reduce costs, and therefore rates, but the majority of the 131 submissions received were against any reduction. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown

said the council had consulted the community and through the submissions process made changes. “We listened and made changes around the projects such as new footpaths, [public] toilets, and assessments of disability inclusive playgrounds. “Small things, moving things around but the community felt it was important. We listened and we changed. “Some people thought some things were more important than we did and we listened and took that on board, and changed things around. “It didn’t affect the overall rates as well we just moved things around a bit.” The council shuffled some funding around to reintroduce new footpaths to the annual plan, as well as including public toilet facilities and rectifying the safety hazards at the EA Networks en-

trance – none of which impacts the rates. What is impacting the 9.4 per cent average rise is inflation, flood recovery and new drinking water regulation compliance. “We are spending a reasonable amount of money on [water regulation compliance] in this coming year and at the end of that year all our water supplies will be compliant.” The council had been advised in October to factor in an inflation rate of 2.9 per cent but Brown said the council were able to forecast that the figure was too

low and went with a rate of 5 per cent. The councillors reviewed the 173-page document and made several corrections and clarifications for the final draft that will be ready to go for adoption next week.

Vaughan’s involvement in the institute stretches back nearly 40 years when she lived in the UK, where much of her family was involved in the institute. “WI has always been a part of my life, my grandmother was a member, my mother was a member so I didn’t have much of a chance not to be a WI member. “They’re absolutely over the moon, there’s only about three left that were there when I was, and when they were told there was a big hoop and roar. “All women are welcome, there is no religious or political requirements,” said Vaughan adding that the institution is a very democratic organisation. Her goals as president is to increase national membership, which has been in decline in recent years, and promote what the institute does in the community. “Membership promotion and bringing a bit of joy to meeting together continuing on the path and simplifying administration.” Vaughan still proudly wears her badge from her original institute in the UK alongside the president’s badge and the good service badge she was awarded.

Expanded site a breakthrough for Southern Parallel Campus Malcolm Hopwood A joint venture agreement with an adjoining farmer has given Southern Parallel Sports Campus (SPSC) the “breakthrough we’re looking for”. CEO and chairwoman of SPSC, Catherine Stuart, said the joint venture, on an expanded 65 hectare site with Lake Hood frontage, cements the success and sustainability of the project, she said. Last year Stuart confirmed the $70 million campus with funding through Westbury Investment Bank would provide rehabilitation, sports resilience and education programmes for hundreds of veterans from North America and “80 different coalition force entities”. With the expanded site, Stuart said she no longer requires resource consent from the Ashburton District Council to progress the development. Originally she negotiated with landowner, John Skevington, to develop the campus on a Village Green site at Lake Hood but, when it was offered for residential development, she entered the joint venture. “By changing our site to a rural block we can apply directly to the Ministry for the Environment for Covid fast-track consents,” she said. “We’ve kept the Ashburton District Council informed of our decision to go directly to the ministry. Once we get approval, the development will go ahead.” “We can then start construction planning in the last quarter of this year with a completion date of mid 2024.” When SPSC was announced in 2020, Stuart said the campus was dedicated to veterans, many with disabilities, who served their country and secured peace around the world. “Its purpose is to build confidence, fitness and prepare participants for a more positive and productive future, enabling them

Catherine Stuart to support their families,” she said. SPSC has engaged local architects, Studio 4, to complete the

site layout and campus design and is working with commercial law firm, Chapman Tripp, to fast track the land use consent. In a further development, SPSC has concluded an agreement with Equestrian Sport New Zealand to establish an international standard Equine Sports Centre on the site which includes a large indoor arena for equestrian and polo competition, equestrian outdoor arenas and two full size polo fields. In addition there’ll be a specialised horse float park, a service centre housing stables, veterinary, washing and grooming bays and lunge rings and lap pools for exercise to ensure ponies are

prepared for competition. “Visiting national and international riders will be accommodated in 24 twin bed, motel style units on site with Ashburton accommodation providing the overflow,” Stuart said. “SPSC believes the inclusion of an Equine Sports Centre will round off its portfolio of programmes and support the development of individuals who represent or have served their country. “The Equine Sports Centre will bring a significant benefit to Ashburton and the region the public can enjoy.” Stuart points to training opportunities in youth riding class-

es, disabled riding, competition preparation and an increase in job opportunities. Equestrian Sports New Zealand (ESNZ) Ashburton Jumping and Showjumping vice-president and Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) official, Annette Scott, said it’s “an exciting venture for local, regional and national equestrian sports”. “In particular ESNZ Ashburton Jumping and Showjumping sector looks forward to the growth of our sport with an international standard homebase that will allow much greater development of our riders and horses through to national and international competitive advantage.”

Turning over a new leaf Guardian reporter highly charged by EV move Daniel Alvey

Electric vehicles, or EVs, as they’re known. If the Government had its way, we’d all be driving around in one, doing our bit to cut carbon emissions and show we’re environmentally responsible. Nice plan Stan, but that’s a long way off, with EVs in New Zealand still only representing about two per cent of yearly new car sales. Plus, given the number of used cars on the road, it remains a tiny fraction of our total registered national car vehicle fleet. Still, some people swear by them, including Christchurchbased Ashburton Guardian reporter Daniel Alvey, who’s moved on from his petrolhead days by diving into the EV market. We buckled him up and put him under our EV blowtorch to get the truth about electric cars. What’s your EV car? It’s a 2017 40kw Nissan Leaf. I bought the car second hand from EV City in Christchurch, with 25,000km on the clock. What did it cost? Off the lot, $35,000. Without being rude, aren’t most EVs boring and slow? All cars can be boring and slow, so it depends how you drive it. The one thing I wanted out of an EV was to not change my driving style, which I haven’t had to do. I’m not sure what your driving style is, but I might just call you Lewis Hamilton then, you Formula One wannabe. But, back to serious EV issues, I hear the batteries simply don’t last long before you have to charge them. How does yours rate? How far could you travel on a fully charged battery? I can get about 200km on the open road and 250km in the city, so not great if you need to travel the length of the country every day, but for most people this range would be fine. Doesn’t it take ages to charge the batteries?

As petrol prices skyrocket, many drivers have made the shift to electric vehicles. One of those is Ashburton Guardian reporter Daniel Alvey.

Charge it up: Daniel Alvey at the local EV charging station. On a standard wall outlet yes, but adaptions can be made to homes to install faster plugs, such as what a caravan would plug into. When out and about, there’s free chargers at places like New World or paid public fast charging, which can charge the Leaf in about half an hour. OK, so what’s the lifespan of a battery and what does it cost to replace them? The expected lifespan is about 10 years, but can you remember the last car you owned that didn’t need major mechanical work in a decade? Calm the farm, Lewis. No need to get defensive. Tell me, then, what’s the day-to-day driving like? Doing at least 180km a day travelling between Ashburton

PHOTO DYLAN WALKER

and Christchurch has meant spending a fair share of time in the Leaf. It’s great to drive, so smooth and comfortable on the highway. As with many new vehicles on the road, it’s fitted with radar-guided cruise control and lane assist, which makes the long drive much easier, but don’t get fooled. It does not drive itself. So, in your eyes, how’s the future looking for EVs? Better and better every day. The charging network is growing at a rapid rate, with new build projects such as the Kmart development at River Crossing, which will bring six more charging stations to Ashburton. That doesn’t sound like a lot of charging facilities to me. The charging network needs

Government investment. Stop wasting time with all these clean car discounts and put it into a usable network that can be relied on. EV chargers don’t just help charge EVs, they drive local businesses by attracting EV drivers into towns and cities. But electric vehicles, especially new ones, cost the earth to buy, don’t they? So how do we make it easier to get into the market? EVs are expensive and there is no way of getting around it. Even second hand ones are still thousands more expensive than a petrol equivalent. Company fleets need to get in there and change to EVs, whether private businesses or the Government. Gone should be the days of driving politicians in six cylinder BMWs. The larger the sec-

ond hand market, the better deal available to consumers. So amuse me for a second and slip into salesman mode and tell me why should I buy an EV? It all depends on what is best for you. My situation meant that it would be far cheaper driving an EV. While some buy an EV to be good to the planet, many choose to buy them for financial reasons. So weigh up the options, including distance travelled, cost to buy, and longer term operating costs. Thanks, I’m onto it like the bright spark (excuse the EV pun) that I am. Oh, and one more final very important question - do red EVs go faster? I thought that’s common knowledge – red cars always go faster. Even EVs.

Lack of competition driving local fuel prices Daniel Alvey

Automobile Association fuel price spokesperson Terry Collins unfortunately had little good news to offer on local fuel prices. PHOTO SUPPLIED

The fuel companies aren’t screwing us, is the word from the Automobile Association. AA fuel price spokesman Terry Collins said the companies operate on a tight margin and, unfortunately for Ashburton there is not enough competition to keep prices down. “Petrol is a small margins big volume game so they only make 3 or 4 cents a litre, but they want to sell millions of litres.”

“So if their volumes start dropping they bring their prices down to maintain their volumes,” Collins said. In Ashburton there is a lack of competition; while Christchurch has nearly 100 fuel stations Ashburton has less than 10. This comes as diesel prices hit $3 dollars a litre in town with many locals feeling the pinch. Collins said this is down to the Ashburton region being a heavy agriculture region, relying more on diesel than other parts of the country. “There’s a big variation between regions and big variations in regions, and unfortunately for places like Ashburton which are cropping and agriculture geographic areas, the poor old farmer and harvester are doing it tough,” Collins said.

Unfortunately for motorists the pain is set to get worse before it gets better, with global prices fluctuating largely every day. Diesel is in particular demand with global shortages driving up the price. Compounding the issue is the restart of global travel with jet fuel going through a similar distilling process to diesel, making shortages worse. There is some good news, more players are expanding their network in New Zealand including a new NPD in Tinwald and the Waitomo Group looking for an expansion into Ashburton, which will help bring down prices locally. But for now, the best thing to save at the pump is to use discount cards and shop around using price apps like Gaspy.

Top Lions award for local identity Malcolm Hopwood Mick Hanham was blown away with an honour he didn’t expect. Mick received a pennant last month for 50 years’ service to Ashburton Lions, but didn’t anticipate anything more. However last week his name was read out and he was honoured with the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest honour presented to a Lions member. “I had no knowledge it was coming. I felt very humbled,” he said. “It was an accolade I didn’t expect.” Mick doesn’t remember much of what he said in reply, but does recall saying “I don’t know how you put up with me for so long”. Looking back, he was an active member from the time he joined. As a Lion, he contributed to the feasibility study which saw Lake Hood and Mount Hutt developed, provided hands-on service over six decades and was club president on two separate occasions. “I had a policy of if you’re asked to do something, you do it,” he said. “I either did it, arranged for someone else to complete the work or paid someone.” Hanham wants to continue as an active Lion for as long as he can. He enjoys the club’s involvement in the community but admits service clubs “need a new influx of younger people”. Prior to becoming a Lion, Mick started his own business, Hanham’s Concrete Products, in 1964, the year he married Diana, and was a prominent and mobile loose forward, representing Mid Canterbury for nine years and the South Island in 1971.

Mick Hanham displays the Melvin Jones Fellowship award he received last week. But when he retired the following year, he needed an outlet for his energy. “I wanted to keep a finger on the pulse of the town and joining a service club suited me,” he said. He met a different group of friends and enjoyed their fellowship. As well as developing his busi-

ness, Mick, a Guardian subscriber for 57 years, also became a rugby administrator and was a foundation member of St Vincent de Paul. He still chairs the Mid/ South Canterbury branch which is committed to helping the underprivileged. At 81, he fattens beef on two properties he owns, one at Ran-

gitata and the other on Wilkins Road, and is “fetch-it” man for his son who now runs the family business. “About twice a week I drive the trucks and carry out deliveries.” Mick’s commitment to rugby also involves following his grandsons. Three play representative rugby, James Tucker for the Blues,

William for Otago and Bradley for Seattle Wolves. Two others, Hunter and Dane Leppien represent Nelson College. James is already being spoken of as a future All Black but Mick has no preferences. He “follows them all and wishes them the best in their careers”.

Driver licensing scheme needs participants Lili Haydon Do you know someone who needs a learner’s licence and lives rurally? The Mid Canterbury Rural Driver Licensing Scheme has a free programme for rural adults in Mid Canterbury to get their driver’s licence this month. Rural licensing co-ordinator Wendy Hewitt said they will finalise a date once they can confirm numbers. “People come to class once a week for nine weeks,” Hewitt said. And after passing the learner test, can get matched with a driving mentor. The scheme has 20 volunteers who either drive participants to and from classes, help with childcare or, eventually teach participants to drive, and if that’s not enough, they also get driving lessons from qualified driving instructors, after they pass the test. “The programme is for rural

newcomers, and migrants to prevent isolation and integrate newcomers into the community,’’ Hewitt said. The scheme has been running for the past five years with a 90 per cent pass rate. “Everyone who gets their learner’s goes on to getting their restricted or full,’’ Hewitt said. The programme is funded in partnership with the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust and Safer Communities Ashburton. There are 12 people in each intake, and there are two intakes a year. According to Hewitt there are seven spaces left for this month’s intake. “A lot are dairy staff,’’ Hewitt said. On Friday, two employers rang and enrolled their staff. Having a licence can create more job opportunities for participants as well. Ninety per cent of the participants that go through the scheme are women, and only one participant in five years has done their practical driving licence in a manual car. That could change soon though.

Exploring Māori place names in our district The Māori history of Mid Canterbury will be explored from the sea to high country in a special mapping exhibit opening at the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum on Sunday.

Kā Huru Manu is a cultural mapping project by Ngāi Tahu that is dedicated to mapping the traditional Māori place names and associated stories within the Ngāi Tahu rohe (tribal area). The exhibition will display seven maps showcasing Ngāi Tahu history within the Mid Canterbury area. The exhibition opens to the public at 1pm on Sunday 19 June. Mayor Neil Brown, councillors and CEO Hamish Riach will attend a formal opening at 10am with Ngāi Tahu. Members of the public are invited to attend a talk at 2pm by Ngāi Tahu Archive Manager Takerei Norton, who will outline Kā Huru Manu’s wider existence and goals. Mid Canterbury school teachers have been invited to a special breakfast on Monday 20 June, where they will be encouraged to share the exhibit’s educational value with their peers and students. Mr Norton said information gathered for Kā Huru Manu had been collected from

many sources and the exhibition is one way of showing some of these information sources.

The exhibit was about sharing that knowledge so people now and in the future had an understanding of traditional Māori place names and how they originated, he said. The Murney Room is being refitted to feature maps and stories, with digital devices so that people can search the Kā Huru Manu website to look at the history of Māori place names in other parts of the island too. “We are hoping that people will take the opportunity to come along and learn about the local Māori place names throughout the Ashburton region.” The whole cultural mapping project brings together an inherited history of Te Waipounamu (the South Island) which details ara tawhito (traditional travel routes) that provided access to resources, trade, and mahinga kai. Over generations of use, Ngāi Tahu hapū and whānau developed an extensive and intimate knowledge of the place names, stories, mahinga kai resources, resting places, and natural features associated with each ara tawhito.

Not just a load of old rubbish You may say “what’s she on about?” Well, currently you all have an opportunity to provide your feedback to Ashburton District Council on your views and thoughts about how we manage our household and other waste (or rubbish as it is commonly called). This consultation goes under the heading of Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2022. We all need to stop and think about how we manage our waste responsibly. As we fill the red bin weekly and the yellow bin fortnightly, we need to be asking ourselves if there is a better way to dispose of our waste. Some items may be able to be used for garden composting, or have we checked that the plastics going in the yellow bin have the numbers 1, 2, or 5 on them in the little triangle sign. If not they must go in the red bin, which means that unfortunately they end up going with the rest of the rubbish to the Kate Valley Landfill. 1

Thursday, 16 June 2022 | ISSUE 83

From the red bins we collect approximately 4000 tonnes each year, but fortunately from the yellow bins we manage to divert between 4000–5000 tonnes each year from going to landfill. However there is more work to do, and in the consultation process you have the chance to have your say on the possibility of also having a household kerbside food waste collection option. Personally in these times of such high costs for food, I struggle with the figures we see in the media of huge amounts of food waste – why don’t people eat it before it gets to the point it needs to be disposed of. Food for thought. So if this has captured your attention please take the opportunity to have your say – you can simply phone the council and the officers can complete your submission over the phone, or you can go on the website ashburtondc.govt.nz and click on the consultation tab, or simply collect the form from the council office, complete it and return it. Your views are valued.

Draft Waste Management & Minimisation Plan 2022 We want to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. One action weʼre proposing is to introduce a kerbside food waste collection for households and offer it as a user-pays service to businesses. Do you agree?

Should we introduce food waste collection?

Draft Trading in Public Places Bylaw We have reviewed our bylaw (currently known as the Mobile Shops, Stalls and Hawkers Bylaw), and we are proposing a few changes including adding more permitted sites for trading.

BBQ shout marks building's progress Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown donned his chef’s apron and deputy mayor Liz McMillan cut the onions for a BBQ shout last week to mark progress on Ashburton’s new library and civic building, Te Pātaka o kā Tuhutuhi and Te Waharoa a Hine Paaka.

Audit and Risk Committee, Wednesday 22 June, 1.30pm (livestreamed) Ashburton Water Zone Committee, Tuesday 28 June, field trip Council meeting, Wednesday 29 June, 1pm (live-streamed)

PUBLIC NOTICES

Mayor Brown said the “roof shout” was a chance to celebrate the progress of the building and to thank over 70 workers on site.

“It’s at an exciting stage and we thought it was timely to personally show our appreciation to everyone working on the building.”

Meetings are at Council Chambers, 137 Havelock Street, unless specified Council Activity Briefings, Wednesday 22 June, 9.30am

The roof of the main building is nearly complete and the last of the concrete pours will happen this month in the main building, smaller secondary building and Emergency Operations Centre.

“This project is still within the $56.75 million budget we have and that’s thanks to a good relationship between the main contractor Naylor Love Canterbury and Council. The completion date has been pushed out by six months but that has been mostly because of delays getting materials or labour caused by covid disruptions elsewhere in the world.

UPCOMING MEETINGS

back and will be recreated using original features as part of the new children’s library.

Councillors Lynette Lovett, Diane Rawlinson, Leen Braam and Stuart Wilson helped prepare and cook patties and sausages bought from Netherby Meats, and the big bag of onions was grown and donated by the Webster family at Dorie.

The current library building on Havelock Street is considered an earthquake risk, and would need major repairs to comply with new National Building Standards.

The library and civic building will be under one roof in the new facility, which also incorporates Pioneer Hall, which has heritage status under the Ashburton District Plan. The hall has been stripped

Council’s aging administration building on Baring Square West is also no longer fit for purpose and needs major renovations and strengthening.

Ealing: Withells Road temporary closure

There will be no change to kerbside rubbish and recycling collections on Matariki, Friday 24 June. Please put your bins out as normal if Friday is your collection day.

The Ashburton Resource Recovery Park will be open on Friday 24 June. The Rakaia Resource Recovery Park will be closed on Friday 24 June.

WAS YOUR BIN TAGGED?

If your yellow bin was tagged and not emptied, that means it contained items that can't be recycled. You need to remove the items indicated on the tag and put your bin out for collection again in two weeks.

A short section of Withells Road from State Highway 1 to Maronan Ealing Road will be closed for a week from Monday 27 June so contractors can repair damage to the road caused by heavy vehicles turning. The closure effectively means there is no access to Withells Road from the highway and detours will be in place. Traffic only using the highway will not be affected. Drivers needing to use the detour will be directed to State Highway 79, the inland route and Hinds Arundel Road.

WINDSTRAPS ON

Wind straps aren't just for windy days! Make a habit of popping on your windstraps every time you put your wheelie bins out - if your bin gets knocked over, then the contents of your bin stay in.

Fonterra has been advised and Waka Kotahi is notifying trucking companies of the closure. Work is planned to start on 27 June and expected to take about four days. In the event of wet weather, it may have to be postponed as sufficient good weather is needed to dry out the patches to get a good seal.

Pipe contract out for tender A project to provide a wastewater pipe network in north-west Ashburton area is currently out for tender and the work, when completed, will enable more residential development in the area. The work will involve laying 2km of pipes and building a pump station that will pump wastewater to Middle Road, where it will enter the town’s existing wastewater system.

Infrastructure Services Manager Neil McCann said the work had been on council’s books for years and contractors were currently submitting tenders for the work. “This new wastewater network will enable higher density development in the area, which is mostly zoned residential C.

New pipes will run along Carters Road, on Farm Road and Allens Road, and the pump station built on Allens Road, near Mill Creek.

“There are about 50 properties in the 40odd hectares that will be serviced by the new network, but over the next decade another thousand new sections could be created. The new pipes will also allow some people to decommission their septic tanks.”

Labour’s Cabinet reshuffle sparked by the departure of Kris Faafoi and Trevor Mallard.

OUR VIEW

Did Labour’s reshuffle fall short?

S

o that’s Labour’s so-called “minor’’ Cabinet reshuffle but has the PM gone far enough? A good question and, on the face of it, no is probably the answer. In key changes, removing Poto Williams as Police Minister makes total sense, with Jacinda Ardern’s comment that “focus had been lost’’ being rather telling. Telling, too, was her suggestion that Williams remained an able minister, which is why she picked up conservation and disability porfolios after being stripped of the police job. Able maybe, but not enough, it seemed, to sort out the crime and gang spree New Zealand is experiencing. Labour’s Minister of Everything, Chris Hipkins has

Daryl Holden been handed the police role to try and make the mean streets safe for decent New Zealanders before they go to the polls next year. The decision of Kris Faafoi to step down from Parliament to spend more time with his young family resulted in Michael Wood, Kiri Allan and Willie Jackson picking up his immigration, justice and broadcasting portfolios respectively. All understandable, while Trevor Mallard’s exit as Speaker of the House to take up a diplomatic post in Europe in August has

an obvious advantage for Team Labour. Ardern would never say it, but she knows that Mallard was one of Labour’s biggest distractions and a weak spot for her opponents to probe. But, for all those “minor’’ changes, why stop there?

wheel. There was the revelation last month that she had no direct contact with the New Zealand ambassador to Russia or the embassy in Moscow over the invasion of Ukraine. She was also slow off the mark when China’s foreign minister led an ambitious diplomatic bid

seems that Foreign Minister, Nanaia “ ItMahuta, may have been lucky to survive. To put it basically, she’s often appeared asleep at the political wheel.

It seems that Foreign Minister, Nanaia Mahuta, may have been lucky to survive. To put it basically, she’s often appeared asleep at the political

across the Pacific. Wang Yi sought a 10-country deal that would have expanded China’s involvement in economic and security

affairs in the region. The Pacific nations ultimately declined, but that had nothing to do with Mahuta’s involvement. And then, of course, there’s been her Three Waters reform, which is nothing short of a train wreck because she failed to sell the idea to councils. The Maori co-governance aspect of it has raised much ire and you can see the anger through various signs up and down rural roadways in Canterbury and beyond. You get the feeling that Mahuta has a target on her back and opposition parties are coming for her. It’s a distraction that Labour certainly doesn’t need. But it’s also one they could have addressed in their “minor’’ Cabinet reshuffle. Will it cost them? Time will tell.

Focus fully on the final

E

ntering Blues territory with a fullhouse at Eden Park would provide an extra incentive for the Crusaders in the DHL Super Rugby Pacific final on Saturday. In their five-championship run, only their first final, in 2017 against the Lions in Johannesburg, was contested away from home and first five-eighths Richie Mo’unga said they knew the occasion and atmosphere in Auckland would be awesome. Mo’unga said finals week was something special and unlike any other week. As players they couldn’t get any faster or fitter, and it was about doing the little things, the homework, the recovery, and mentally preparing for what was ahead. They were coming off a semi-final against the Chiefs that had test-match intensity. In an ideal world they didn’t want to make as many tackles as they had, but it showed they were prepared to do whatev-

working towards their side winning the championship, and after that, it was All Blacks coach Ian Foster who would decide on who would be the test five-eighths. “The noise doesn’t influence me much in what I want to do, it’s still focusing on myself and the team. “This is finals footy, I don’t need any motivation to play well. It’s been like that for the past couple of years. When it comes to finals footy I just want to do my best, do my role for the team to help my team get the job done,” he said. He said he found big games provided clarity for him around what he needed to do. “I see clearer pictures and sharpen up images in my head around what I want to do and what I want to achieve. “It just happens that I’ve been in a few of these matches and it’s given me confidence to keep doing it and knowing that I’ve been there and done that before,” he said.

Finals footy is all that matters for Richie Mo’unga on Saturday night. er it took to defend their line. “This week, there is nothing surer than that it is going to take more effort than what we showed at the weekend. “We’re coming up against an awesome Blues team who have been the benchmark for this whole Super campaign, so we know the challenge up ahead,” he said.

Mo’unga didn’t buy into all the talk about a prospective clash with rival Beauden Barrett. That talk was the same as it had been through the years, he said. But he did draw excitement to go up against one of the world’s best. Mo’unga said both he and Barrett were

By Erin Tasker Key match-ups across the board will feature when Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier competition reaches its mid-point tonight. Heading into the halfway point of the second of three rounds which will form the 2022 season, there’s two unbeaten teams remaining in ACL Premier 1 – Celtic A and Hampstead A – while United A and Mt Somers A have one win apiece, and Methven A and Southern are down the bottom yet to put points on the board in round two. But that will change this week with Methven A and Southern set to play each other in the middle match of the night, and both sides will be eager to pull themselves off the bottom of the leaderboard and boost their chances of avoiding the promotion/ relegation game which awaits the bottom team at the end of the second round. That game will follow the one between Hampstead A and Mt Somers to start the night at 6.15pm, making it a second tough ask in a row for the Mt Somers girls after they were soundly beaten by Celtic A last week, while the night will finish off with that Celtic side looking to maintain their unbeaten streak this season against United A. While there’s been some sizeable margins in ACL Premier 1 matches at times so far this season, it’s a different story in ACL Premier 2, with close contests a feature week in, week out. That’s not likely to change this week, either, with the four teams currently occupying the top four spots on the leaderboard set to face off. Two of those teams, Allenton A and Rakaia, are only just making their return to premier netball after an absence of many years in 2022. Allenton began the season in Premier 2, while Rakaia started in Premier 3 and earned promotion to premier 2 at the end of round one, and this week they will take each other on in the middle game of the night. That will be followed by the recently relegated from Premier 1 College A side taking on the team currently topping the standings in Premier 2, Methven B, while the first game of the night is between two traditionally strong premier 2 sides – Celtic B and Hampstead B – who, surprisingly to many, find themselves without a win so far in round two. In ACL Premier 3, Methven and College B top the table having won their first two round two encounters, while Hampstead U18 Development and College Y10A are middle of the table, and Methven and United B are at the bottom still searching for a round two win. This week the two College sides will take each

All teams then face a short turnaround, with next week’s round of ACL premier netball being played on the Tuesday night due to the Matariki long weekend, with the Friday a public holiday, and the fact that the Ashburton College school ball is being held on the Thursday night. Trials for Mid Canterbury’s senior A rep side to play at this year’s Hanan Shield tournament, and the South Island Senior Championships, are also taking place next Thursday night (June 23) and interested players can register to trial via the Mid Canterbury Netball website.

CLUB NEWS Ashburton Golf Club

Presidents trophy qualifying, brought a good number of players down to the Brandon. Top 16 was the first target, just get yourself into the knockout matches and you are in with a chance. The knockout games are all played off handicap, so everyone will feel confident. Top qualifier and top scorer of the day was Richard McKernan with a wonderful gross 77 off a 7 for nett 70. A further shot back on 71 taking second, third and fourth seedings were two great golfers and a hacker in Lefty, Paddy and Chris Lovelock, I will let you work out who the hacker is. The rest of the top 16 is an eclectic spread from Club legends to future stars and everything in between. We have Charlie, Nutts, Arkright, Rob Pawsey, Bryan D, Ron, Stewey, Jordy, AJ, Young Seb and both Spuds. The draw has been done, it has been changed once and may well change again before game day, if we have Covid withdrawals or unavailability. So I will stay clear of predictions till next week. Good luck to everyone playing. The ones not in matchplay will have a stableford round. On Sunday we have a full list of pennants games. The scratch Holmes teams travel down to Gleniti, where they will both take on Tinwald opposition, hoping to hang on to their first and second positions in the league. Davo and the Redpath boys have a home game against Highfield. I am not sure of the captain’s

tactics yet, or what sort of team he has to hand, but I am certain it will be a big win. Also playing at home are both the Patterson teams. Dylan’s boys on a two game losing streak face a very tough Rakaia team, who will not be fazed by playing at Brandon, as they have the course record holder in the team alongside other local legends. It could be Dylan’s last game in charge! No pressure. The old dogs though, are on a high, riding the wave of a one game winning streak, facing a mediocre Fairlie team. Much loved Captain Paddy names an unchanged team for the first time, and he is sure his loyal charges will perform accordingly and a surge up the table is on the cards. Results and gossip next week. Good golfing.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club

President Julie Begg welcomed members and a visitor to the June meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club. After the National Anthem was sung, birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated, one member had been married for 60 years. The Almoner gave a report and the President reminded of trips to Coniston and Oamaru. The raffles were drawn. Our Area Representative Carl Ruddenklau told of his life and family. He joined Probus about 11 years ago, before the name was changed to Friendship.

He had held many roles in the Friendship Club before becoming the Area Representative. Each club operates a little differently, he sees his job is to liaise between the five clubs and Friendship New Zealand Inc. An area meeting is planned for mid July in Timaru. He encourages members to step up and participate to help keep the Friendship Clubs active and vibrant. After morning tea the speaker was Sue Abel from Neighbourhood Support. Her role is co-ordinator and she has lived in Ashburton for 25 years. Connectedness and neighbour welfare provide a sense of security and care knowing there are neighbours around who will keep an eye on your home, or be aware of any irregular happenings in your street. Burglary and theft never go away and prevention is best. For further security, Neighbourhood Support offers marking kits for the home. The Menz Shed also do engraving, at a cost of $4 per item, worth it for any high ticket items such as tools, e-bikes, sports and recreational gear. Get’s Ready has been set up on computers, this will help keep everyone connected in a disaster. There is to be a scam campaign as this is a real problem, especially with the aged populations. There have been several rural networking meetings. A security camera has been installed at the Hakatere Huts. Sue was thanked for her address. The President reminded members of the mid-winter Christmas Dinner on 29 June. The Thought for the Month was –

“Keep smiling, because life is a beautiful thing and there is so much to smile about. The next meeting is at the Hotel Ashburton 13 July. If you wish to attend please phone Julie 308-4254 or Rae 308-8927.

Run and Walk Ashburton

Norrie Cup, June 11 2022 Run and Walk Ashburton were hosts for the annual Norrie Cup on Saturday 11th June 2022. Whilst numbers were down on the previous year, good competition was had within all age categories and disciplines, and the weather played its part being dry but fresh. The course started and finished near the Hot Rod Clubrooms in Tinwald, with the 2km course weaving in and around the Tinwald Domain, including the highly anticipated water jump. Our thanks to all who travelled from Timaru and Waimate, it made for a great day and we always look forward to hosting you. The warm fire and delicious afternoon tea was greatly appreciated by all at the conclusion. A huge thanks to all Ashburton members who helped bring this day together, many hands made light work.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club

On Sunday the Club Over 70s and Under 70s Doubles Competitions were

held in wet and cold conditions for the latter part of the games. A hot cup of soup/tea was a welcome sight as players came in from the cold. The Over 70s Trophy was won by Karine Crum and Ellen Pithie, 2nd Colin Jones and Mick Little, 3rd Kate Marriott and Ian Hubbard. The Under 70s was won by Jonathan Crum and Karen Bensdorp, 2nd place Adair Jones and Stephen Fitzgerald, 3rd Shelagh Field and Neville Bensdorp. Our next club competition is the Male and Female Singles at the end of July. Adeyls will be holding another training session this Thursday, which is proving very popular. An article on petanque was included in the latest Seniors Newsletter emailed out on 7 June. Here is an excerpt from it: Some people call it Boules but the game is actually called Pétanque. It originated in France and people aged 9–95, male and female, play it all around the world. Pétanque is played almost anywhere but a gravel terrain is best. The boules are steel balls of around 700 grams which are thrown to a jack or cochonnet, and teams play to get nearest through ‘pointing’ close or ‘shooting’ to remove opposition boules. It’s an easy game to learn but more challenging to become really good. About 36 small and medium sized clubs exist throughout NZ. So don’t be shy, come and join us any Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday at 1pm.

RightonTrack Guardian racing

Mid Canterbury’s horse and dog racing action

Every post a winner For someone who says he doesn’t actively set targets every season, milestones have a way of finding Blair Orange. The country’s top driver has breezed past 100 winners and $1m in stakes for 2022 and is all but guaranteed of taking out his fifth straight drivers’ premiership. “I’m pretty happy with how it’s going,” says Orange. “I never take it for granted, but it has been a good few months.” Currently he’s on 103 wins for the year, 53 clear of closest rival John Dunn. In June alone he reined back-to-back trebles at Ashburton (Republican Party, Vinke B and Soviet Star) and Invercargill (Santanna Mach, Northview Peg and One More Moment). Vinke B’s win was his seventh in the time-honoured two-year-old feature, the Sapling Stakes. His run started with Lennon in 2003 and also included Krug in 2020. “It’s been a very kind race to me and it certainly helps when you have the right cattle to sit behind.” And support from trainers has been critical. As a freelance driver there’s barely a leading stable he doesn’t drive for and he’s won at nearly 20 different tracks around the country so far this year alone.

Blair Orange is well on the way to yet another driver’s premiership title. “I’m certainly not over the travel, I’ve had lots of support whether it’s Micky at Palmy (Michael House) or Tony Stratford and many others down south.”

“It’s what you do to make a living.” In between his driving commitments there’s also a team of 40 he’s preparing at home with Ken Barron at Toliman Lodge

M4 Riccarton gallops

at West Melton in Canterbury. “They are at various stages in their preps but you always look forward to the buzz of getting behind your next good horse.” And over the years there have been plenty, highlighted by his New Zealand Cup–Dominion double in 2019 with Cruz Bromac and Habibi Inta. He also won the last New Zealand Cup with Copy That. Since starting out in 1997 Orange has had 2414 wins, making him fifth all-time in terms of New Zealand winners, surpassed only by Tony Herlihy (3621), Maurice McKendry (3352), Ricky May (3024) and David Butcher (2535). In the elongated 2021 season (August 1 2020-December 31 2021) he had a career high 267 wins while his best for a 12 month season was 232 in 2018. Orange has won the premiership four consecutive times (2018-2021), taking over from Dexter Dunn who won ten in a row before basing himself in North America. But Orange is adamant that clinching premierships, or setting records, is not what motivates him. “Not at all,” he says. “I never try to get ahead of myself, you do your best for the trainers and the owners and give every race 100 per cent.”

Your Stars

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Lethargy goes against your fire sign nature, and it is off-putting to behold laziness and apathy. Vital physicality is like a religion. Your posture inspires others. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Look to the horizon. Excellent events gallop toward you like cavalry to save the day. If there are relationships and responsibilities in the way, look out anyway. Can’t see the horizon? Invent the horizon. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’re on board with an agenda and your senses are primed to gather the clues. You don’t even really need any external reinforcement or help. Aligned and alert, all is coming together for you. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You don’t like to leave things floating around, especially things that clearly belong together. You’ll gather collections, tether ideas and pull them together, and issue the introductions to connect people. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Don’t have the answer? Don’t worry! Connecting with others because you have something to say can be off-putting. Finding something to say to help you connect with people is more loveable and social. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Trust the feeling you’re getting more than what’s in a resume or sales pitch. People will behave as you think they might, not because they are influenced by you, but because your intuition is two steps ahead. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): People often don’t want what they think they do. The one asking you to solve a problem may really just want you to be in the problem with them so they can interact with you in a way they interpret as care. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Humans do human things – arrive late or don’t show up, over-promise or spill the very information they are supposed to keep secret. Humans will disappoint like it’s their job, so to forgive is divine. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You can tell so much by looking into a person’s eyes. You are attuned to subtle energy and can easily read the glint of passion, the sparkle of affection and the glisten of humanity. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Though in the long sweep of human existence the notion of land ownership is fairly recent, the animals and even the plants fight for territory. In an artful and detailed way, you’ll mark yours today. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’d like to help someone, and helping yourself may be the best way. Everyone must decide what habits and behaviours are optimum and how to stay healthy in body, mind and relationships. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): What looks adorable on a child can look ridiculous or even criminal on an adult. What flew like fashion one year is an embarrassment in others. The hardest thing to unlearn is the thing that once worked well.
