Off to a ‘pretty good start’
Mt Hutt skifield’s opening weekend has been a “pretty good start to the season”. Ski area manager James McKenzie said it was great to see all the keen guests enjoying opening day on Friday and then better conditions on Saturday. Mt Hutt had opened with polarising conditions to last year’s opening, with good snow accumulation on the lower mountain, but low snow levels on the upper mountain. “We started last season with a massive 3 metres on the summit and 30cm in the base area – this year we have a solid 50cm on the mountain,” McKenzie said. “We were disappointed not to get the Summit Six going for opening day, however, I was super excited to get it open for a period on Saturday. “With cold temperatures on the horizon we look forward to firing up our state-of-the-art snowmaking guns and refreshing trails as required.” More new snow overnight will improve the upper mountain conditions, he said as they look forward to opening up more terrain in the coming days. It was also liberating not having to operate under Covid-19 restrictions, McKenzie said. Like many businesses Mckenzie said it had been more difficult to fill roles at the skifield this year, but they have managed to do it, with around 300 staff on board.

Methven’s water meter installation under way Jonathan Leask A council manager says it’s “difficult to quantify’’ how much water’s been lost because of infrastructure leaks in Methven until the meter implementation plan hits full noise. Ashburton District Council in-
frastructure services group manager, Neil McCann, said 160 of 1200 meters have been installed in a trial the council hopes will solve massive water losses in Methven. McCann said to get the maximum value from any metering programme it needed water meters on all connections. “Only then can we determine where the water is actually going,’’ he said. “Universal metering will also allow council to calculate how
much of the leakage is on the public network and how much is on private property.” The council believed there was an unaccounted water loss of 65 per cent in Methven between 2019-2020. It also reported that acoustic detection technology, where water leakages in burst or faulty pipes are heard and found without disrupting the service or breaking the ground, identified a total of 51 leaks on public and private properties during one-off investigations in July 2020.
In its long-term plan, the council agreed to a $1 million trial of water meters in Methven, believing there were significant leaks in the region’s infrastructure. Once the meters were installed and used to identify leaks, the information would also eventually be used to prioritise acoustic leak detection activities on the public network, McCann said. “We have identified some leaks after installing meters and notified the property owners, who have attended to the leaks, so
leakage will be gradually decreasing. “It is difficult to quantify the amount at this stage.”

Regional NZ ‘ignored’ when it comes to transport Jonathan Leask Regional New Zealand is not being listened to on transport policy and infrastructure, National’s spokesperson for transport claims. National’s Simeon Brown, (Pakuranga MP), and the party’s associate transport spokespersons Matt Doocey (Waimakariri MP) and Scott Simpson (Coromandel MP) met with the Ashburton District Council as part of a South Island tour to talk transport and to “get a sense of what the issues are”, Brown said. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said it was a constructive visit to discuss Ashburton’s priorities, which are well documented. The second bridge tops the list followed by more funding assistance for a pot-hole riddled network, and then there is the four-laning of State Highway 1 from Ashburton to Rakaia, and beyond to Rolleston. An infrastructure wish list the national trio was supportive of but the crux of it comes down to funding. “People down here have a right to feel angry about the priorities of current transport funding,” Simeon Brown said. “It’s a shame how people in this part of New Zealand have felt so ignored, particularly when they see so many tens of millions being spent on a cycle bridge and endless reports in Auckland.” National has again committed to the four lanes from Ashburton to Rolleston, which Simeon Brown said was a long-term safety solution, rather than a temporary band-aid like lower speed

Simeon Brown said to deliver the required infrastructure requires better management of the funding available.
“At the moment, the National Land Transport Fund is being siphoned off in a range of directions.” Money is now going to KiwiRail, coastal shipping, and to cycleways “which means the funds are not being used for what they should”, he said. “That’s delivering infrastructure and roads, paid for by people who

Like minds come together Daniel Alvey Bringing together families of gifted Mid Canterbury children has been labelled a success. That was the feeling of Mid Canterbury and Lincoln’s MindPlus regional lead teacher, Melanie Simons. “It was great, and it was a really good turnout,” Simons said. MindPlus is an extension support group for gifted primary school children, offering extra educational expertise to allow them to thrive even further via specialist and often one-on-one teacher assistance. The MindPlus programme is run nationwide and in Mid Canterbury its recognition was an important part of New Zealand’s Gifted Awareness Week, which finished last Friday. In Ashburton, an evening hosted at Borough School last week was a chance for families to come together and celebrate this year’s theme, Like Minds, Simons said. Simons said finding like minds amongst kids their own age can be a challenge, so the organisation played a major role in bringing them together. “We did a celebration of our theme for the year, which is about Like Minds,’’ she said. “So we talked about what that means for the kids. Then we had a hands-on activity. “It was an opportunity for parents to meet some of their kids’ friends at MindPlus and other parents, and ask them questions.’’

Twelve months of devotion and 2500 hours of dedicated work has seen the restoration of an 1851 Merrywether manual fire pump. The fire pump, which could answer any Ashburton call today, was unveiled at Plains Museum on Sunday to invited guests including the restorers, Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade members and its original owners, John and Deborah McLachlan. The pump is a replica of the fire appliance which the Ashburton Fire Brigade purchased in 1878 and became its main pump, serving the brigade for 20 years until it was bought by a Flemington farmer and then lost from sight. The brigade’s heritage collection has long missed a major component in its evolution. It didn’t have a 19th century pump, unless it manufactured one itself. However, when farmers John and Deborah McLachlan visited the fire museum as part of an Ashburton Rotary Club car rally, they remembered one that had lain derelict in their father’s shed for 64 years. It was identical to photos of Ashburton’s hand pump and they offered its remains to the museum on permanent loan. It was handed over to the leader of Ashburton Museum’s Grey Watch, Ian Moore, in June last year and, with five team members, he started the restoration. They worked weekly, six hours a day until it was completed. Last Friday its signage arrived and was fitted and on Sunday, the pump was unveiled. It now sits in the museum alongside 11 other appliances, the latest being a 2004, Dennis Fire Engine. However, Moore and his team didn’t restore it to look pretty. It had to work like all the other engines in their collection. On Sunday it displayed its talent. “We

fired water out of it. The nozzle pumped water in excess of 25 metres using 100 gallons a minute,” he said. “On its day it had a crew of 22 men, 11 on either side, pumping water while a fire officer pointed the nozzle at the fire. After about a minute a fresh crew took over, many would have been spectators watch-
ing the blaze.” Moore said all of their appliances are operational and could be used if ever called on. He explained that in the 19th century, the borough council built channels around the town and the fire pump sucked water from them and then pumped it at the blaze. “I feel elated and very proud of our Grey Watch team, who are mostly ex-firefighters and friends,” he said. “With the pump, we must have the most impressive collection of fire appliances in New Zealand.”

World Lions president to visit Methven Malcolm Hopwood “It beggars belief the world president is coming to Methven,” exclaimed a surprised Mac McElwain. McElwain, a member of Methven Lions, was reacting to the news, world president of Lions Clubs International, Brian Sheehan, is visiting the resort early next month. Sheehan, from Bird Island, Minnesota, will be elected world president at the association’s international convention from June 25-29, and has decided to visit New Zealand as his first engagement. As part of his three days here, he’ll
spend several hours in Methven on July 8, meeting Lions club members over lunch, being helicoptered to Mt Hutt and officially opening the Methven Walkway. McElwain, who’s convenor of his visit, said “it’s extraordinary that, of 40,000 clubs in the world, he’s chosen us to visit”. “We’re absolutely delighted. It’s a reward for the 70 members who’ve made our club work over the years,” he said. McElwain pointed to Methven Lions paying for the feasibility study that resulted in Mt Hutt being established and they also contributed to the development of the roadway leading to the skifield. “If we hadn’t done that, Mt Hutt wouldn’t be there,” McElwain said. While the Methven Walkway was first started in the 1970s, Lions club
members have adopted it as one of their projects and have extended it to about eight kilometres in time for the official opening. “We decided it should be completed for locals and to attract visitors. It’s there for the good of Methven people,” McElwain said. Sheehan, the CEO and founder of Rural Computer Consultants, a software development company, has been a member of Bird Island Lions Club for more than 30 years. His service to Lions has been recognised by numerous national and international awards and he’s also active in professional and community organisations. In 2011 he received the US Minnesota Small Business Person of the Year Award. Brian Sheehan and his wife, Lori, also a Lion, enjoy raising many types of exotic animals.

The arrival of the first settlers to the continent of Sahul (Australia and Papua New Guinea) 50,000 years ago will be addressed in Ashburton this month. Dr Anne Ford, associate professor of archaeology at Otago University, is the guest of the University of the Third Age, on Tuesday, June 28. Ford specialises in the prehistory of Papua New Guinea and, over the past 15 years, has completed archaeological fieldwork, including examining the first footsteps of modern humans in Ivane valley, the earliest occupied site. She said over time the first settlers developed unique regional cultures including agricultural innovations in the Highlands of New Guinea. Her talk will explore how these first modern humans came to arrive in Sahul and what they did on their arrival. Ford specialises in stone tool technology, exploring how people adapt and innovate technologies in new environments. The U3A meeting is at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre at 10.15am. First case of M bovis detected for the year By Pat Deavoll A Mid Canterbury dairy farm has been confirmed to have mycoplasma bovis (M bovis), the first incidence in 2022. Ministry of Primary Industries was working with the property to manage and remove the infection, with a restricted notice placed on the farm to reduce cow movement. The infection was found during routine bulk tank milk (BTM) screening. BTM screening takes samples each month as part of the normal milk collection process. Samples are then screened for M bovis antibodies and results indicate whether an on-farm investigation is needed. Two further herd tests also returned positive results. A small number of other properties which have had cattle movements from the farm in the last year are also under a restricted notice. Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) M bovis eradication programme director Simon Andrew said the cause of the infection wasn’t known, though it was likely linked to animals moving on and off the farm. “The BTM screening programme provides confidence that M bovis is not widespread, and we remain on track for eradication, as shown by our very low rate of case finds from testing,” Andrew said. “Based on previous years, we know autumn and spring are our peak periods for detections picked up from the BTM screening and it

Last month it was thought the infection had been isolated to only one property – the Five Star
Beef feedlot near Ashburton – following a four-year eradication programme that had seen more than $220 million paid in compensation. In its weekly update, the Mycoplasma Bovis Programme did not provide any details about the farm.

Based on previous years, it was not unexpected to find further infected farms at this time of year, the update said. The disease, which could cause lameness and mastitis in cows, was first found on a farm in South Canterbury in 2017. More than 270 farms have been
found to have the disease and more than 176,000 cows have been culled.

SIDE event shows variable milking in new light Pat Deavoll The South Island Dairy Event (SIDE) in Oamaru got off to a rip-roaring start, with an attendance of over 500 farmers over the two days. This reporter decided to challenge herself by attending a workshop on a topic she knew nothing about – variable milking. Variable milking is a ‘catch-all’ term given to milking intervals that sit between more traditional once-a-day (OAD) or twice-aday (TAD) milking. The most common forms of variable milking are milking three times in two days (3-in-2) and 10 milkings in seven days (10-in-7). Paul Edwards (DairyNZ), Jeremy Savage (Lincoln University Dairy Farm (LUDF)), and Geraldine dry land dairy farmer Richard Robinson presented the workshop. Traditionally milking in New Zealand revolves around two milkings a day, Edwards said. And we have seen this evolve over the years, probably in response to increasing herd size and increasing pressures on trying to make dairying an attractive workplace, particularly in recent years with the lack of immigration. “There is a lot of interest in once-a-day milking but in particular the plethora of different options there are in between,” he said. Irrespective of what milking frequency you choose, there are options for those milking times, Edwards said. Even twice-a-day milkings can be adjusted to eight
Richard and Jacqui Robinson have embraced variable milking on their farm at Geraldine. and 16-hour intervals. “If you think about that in the context of the traditional 10and-14, you could be starting milking two hours earlier and end the day two hours earlier.” Once a day is the ultimate in terms of flexibility, and this can work around any time during the day to suit the farm team. Jeremy Savage of Lincoln University Dairy Farm (LUDF) said LUDF had always been the first follower of science. Five years ago, it adopted partial 21 (P21),
which was based on DairyNZ research. LUDC dropped its herd size from 710 cows to 550 cows and improved production from 450ms to 550ms per cow. The natural progression leading on from that was “what is the next bit of science we can adopt on farm, and I think the key thing was that we wanted to see positive outcomes around our cow welfare, and our people,” he said. So, the variable milking programme ticked two out of three of these boxes.
PHOTO SUPPLIED
“We had a reasonable element of confidence that we could run 10-in-7 at a $7 payout and it not have any effect on profitability whatsoever.” Richard Robinson spoke of his experience with variable milking on his dryland dairy farm near Geraldine. “We have 480 cows and have recently bought quite a big runoff down the road. We have three to four staff – staffing has never really been a problem. “We don’t go for huge num-
bers. This year we made 184,000 kgs of milksolids, which was a record for us. “We work on just one mob, and we have always been encouraged by a consultant (John Donkers) who gave us the confidence to give variable milking a go.”

Banks Peninsula residents kick up stink about cattle feedlots A group of Banks Peninsula residents concerned at the prospect of massive cattle feedlots being built in the area have delivered a petition to Canterbury Regional Council calling for them to be stopped. Farm company Wongan Hills has applied for consents to build four large composting feed farms on their Kaituna Valley farm – which could hold up to 2200 cattle – near Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere. Four large sheds would house the cattle 24 hours a day, year round. According to an independent assessment, undertaken as part of the consent
application, the barns are designed to create compost at a high enough temperature that all liquid effluent would evaporate. The composted bedding material generated from the barn will be spread to land every one to two years. Over 3000 people have signed the petition, which was presented to councillors and MPs Tracey McLellan and Eugenie Sage by the Little River Eco Collective. The group is concerned about the impact of industrial farming on the valley, including trucks, the stench of ammonia and the visual impact, an increase in greenhouse

Spokesperson Donald Matheson believed the project would have a similar effect on the community to Christchurch City Council’s Bromley Composting Plant. “This has the same potential of emitting offensive and objectionable odours, which will have adverse effects on neighbouring residents similar to the experiences of the Bromley community,” he said. Matheson also wants the council to publicly notify the consents, and claimed Wongan Hills had not carried out sufficient
consultation with the local community. One resident who lived within 500m of the proposed barn site and local iwi had been consulted. Canterbury Regional Council is yet to make any decisions on either of the consent applications lodged. Councillors said it would be up to senior planning staff to decide if the application will be publicly notified. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You cultivate what you need, yet you feel you never have enough of it. Since this feeling (not exactly one of lack, but of an ever-present, low-grade hunger) keeps your world spinning, embrace it. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): What you aim for in love is a simple feeling, but it comes from sophisticated rules and decisions, covering many measures, involving a great number of details. Go easy! Give yourself a break! GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): A new order is settling in. You don’t have total control over this development, but you still have enough influence to alter destiny. Question of the night: Who do you need on your team? CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The sommelier calls the wine’s colour the “robe.” And if you were a wine, your robe would be experienced as lighter and rosier than expected, breathing and grateful to be released from a bottled-up state. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): When packing for a trip, start by opening the suitcase, the dimensions of which will make a lot of decisions for you. Containers are their own kind of inspiration. Content follows the form of the vessel. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Though the guru says are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, you still seem to be having the hardest time figuring out what a certain someone is thinking. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): People are always asking you to be the judge because you’re fair. There’s a reason judges get paid though; it’s work! Find ways to appreciate the contributions of others without having to rate them. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Resist the impulse to demonstrate your value. While it might be nice to belong in someone’s realm, you shouldn’t have to prove yourself to get in. Good matches take off effortlessly. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Noticing and honouring the negative space (whether physical, emotional or other, like silence or blankness) will double your perception. Space is its own beautiful (non)entity. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): It won’t be appropriate to say everything you want to say, and the other person is also holding back. The two of you can read so much between the lines. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): What you thought would be one choice turned out to be a lifestyle. The pursuit now accesses so much of your passion that you almost feel like you’re living for it – which is what’s needed for success. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): No pressure, but... people want your acceptance, crave your encouragement and attention. It’s a good thing you also get a charge from giving in this way and, in fact, will feel like you’re the one being gifted.

Scott Robertson isn’t just a great breakdancer, he makes all the right moves in rugby tactics too. The Crusaders’ targeting and then the complete dismantling of the Blues’ lineout in Saturday’s final, was a clear example of that.

OUR VIEW
Razor’s not just a gifted breakdancer
R
azor. Scott Robertson. Rugby’s quirky, sparkly-eyed breakdancing super coach. And that’s super in every sense of the word. Robertson proved that yet again on Saturday night, masterminding his Crusaders to an almost hard to believe sixth successive Super Rugby title that’s added to their dynasty and standing as one of sport’s – and not just rugby’s – most dominant franchises this century. In so doing, Robertson confirmed his reputation as one of the best rugby coaches going. That’s hardly news to anyone who follows the game closely because no-one can argue with Robertson’s record for a start. He clearly has a gift, being able to meticulously plan a campaign, lift his men when they’re down (as they were at stages this season) and deliver on-field strategies and game plans that make his teams so hard to break down.
Daryl Holden The Crusaders’ targeting, and then the complete dismantling of the Blues’ lineout in Saturday’s final, was a clear example of that. His passion, energy and drive is also a strength and it’s not fabricated in any way. It’s who Robertson is, being as real as the quality of his bone-jarring, cut-you-in-half tackles from his playing days, hits that sparked his Razor nickname. But what many won’t realise about the man, who will surely become the All Blacks’ head coach in time, is that behind the fun, laughter and breakdancing, Robertson has followed a serious, lengthy path to become
a coach and he’s a studious follower of the game. It started when he was 22 when he coached an under-13 side at Christ’s College and his early days included proudly taking his Sumner club team into first grade play in Christchurch when he retired from playing in 2007. He’s learned his coaching trade from the voluntary grassroots level and is now excelling in top-level professional play. But what also makes Robertson really stand out and again it’s something perhaps not noted or appreciated, is that he also has a knack of identifying and developing coaches around him as much as players. Look at Jason Ryan, the Crusaders’ forwards coach, and who clearly knows a thing or two about front row play, given the number of props and hookers he’s helped develop. As a combo,
he and Robertson have been incredibly successful. In many ways, they’re the Batman and Robin of New Zealand rugby coaching. Other coaches who’ve sang Robertson’s praises and then gone on to great things include former Irish great Ronan O’Gara, who was an assistant coach at the Crusaders in 2018 and 2019. Just last month, O’Gara coached La Rochelle to become the champions of Europe. O’Gara regularly talks about the positive influence Robertson has had on his coaching and approach to the game. Brad Mooar, now part of the All Blacks’ coaching setup, was one of Robertson’s assistants for three years at the Crusaders, while Leon MacDonald made his Super Rugby coaching debut with the men from Christchurch before heading to the Blues. Existing Crusaders’ backs
coach Andrew Goodman is another to have enjoyed the Robertson magic before being poached elsewhere. Goodman farewelled the club following Saturday’s Super Rugby Pacific triumph to prepare for a new gig coaching top Irish side Leinster. They’ve all clearly benefited from the Robertson touch, from a coach who’s probably the most popular we’ve ever had in New Zealand. Because in many ways, Robertson transcends the sport, his fun-filled image and enthusiastic lines appealing to those who otherwise probably couldn’t give a hoot about rugby. But they all know about Scott Robertson. They all know about his breakdancing. He’s blessed with the X-factor is Razor Robertson. But he’s also blessed with a coaching gift. We saw that again on Saturday night.

Top-of-the-table clash a Tuesday night feature
By Erin Tasker Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL Premier competition makes a rare Tuesday night appearance tonight, and it’s set to be a cracker with a mouth-watering table-topping clash on offer. Defending champions Hampstead A and the only unbeaten team in ACL Premier 1 so far this season Celtic A are set to do battle in the middle game tonight, and while both sides are coming off a couple of dominant wins, tonight is likely to be a very different story. When the two sides met for the first time in 2022, back on May 19, many people would have been surprised by the margin, with Celtic taking it out 43-24. And with teams struggling to put the same team on court week in week out due to injuries and the amount of sickness around, it’s hard to predict just what might happen when the two sides meet again tonight. But one thing is for sure, and that’s the fact that both teams will be determined to take it out and move out to a clear lead on the points table with just one more game remaining before the third and final championship round commences. Further down the table it’s still anyone’s guess as to who could end up in the promotion/relegation game awaiting the bottom team at the end of round two, with three teams – United A, Methven A and Mt Somers A – all on four points with just one second round win to their names so far. Down the bottom and yet to get on the board in round two are Southern. But by the end of tonight, the table will have
a very different look to it. United A will start the night off against Southern, and if Southern are to pull off an upset which they’re more than capable of on their day, and deny United a bonus point, it’ll pull them even on four points. The other game of the night is between Methven A and Mt Somers A, and if whichever team goes down in that one also fails to claim a bonus point for finishing within three, it’s possible there’ll be three teams sitting in the relegation game danger zone heading into the final games of round two. The race for the top of the ACL Premier 2 table is tight, too. The team looking likely to play in that promotion/relegation game right now is Rakaia, as they remain unbeaten in their return to premier netball in 2022. Tonight, Rakaia take on bottom of the table Hampstead B, and a win there will further heighten their chances of making that promotion game, although College A are also finding some good form after being relegated from Premier 1 at the end of round one. Tonight, they’ll face a tough ask in the form of another side making a strong return to premier netball in 2022, Allenton A. The last game on the ACL Premier 2 card tonight sees Methven B looking to bounce back from a narrow one goal loss to College A last week, when they take on Celtic B. In ACL Premier 3, Hampstead U18 Development take on College B, before the two Methven teams – table-topping Shearmac, and Humm Engineering – play each other, and United B and College Y10A play in the last game of the night.
Celtic’s Rebecca Cochrane looks for her target. Celtic will have a major threat on their hands at the EA Networks Centre tonight, in the form of defending champs Hampstead.
Methven just miss out on the silverware Methven were doing their utmost to fly the Mid Canterbury flag in the Combined Country competition on Saturday, with the Canterbury Rugby Supporters Trophy on the line, and on home territory, but they fell just short, with Waihora taking the honours in an absolute thriller. The home side was leading 21-16 with 15 to go, courtesy of tries from centre Manasa Vula, first five Tom Reekie and halfback Henry Miller, but Waihora marksman Brett Gillan kept knocking over penalties to keep his side in the game, along with a try from Matt Kottier. A Tom Reekie penalty with only minutes to go looked to have sealed the deal for Methven, but Waihora roared back upfield, and a last-minute penalty broke the hearts of the vociferous crowd of Methven supporters. Southern came up against Prebbleton in the third and fourth playoff game, at Mayfield. The first half was a try-fest, with both sides notching up three tries and two conversions,
Scoreboard Southern 26 (tries Logan Bonnington,
Matthew McAtamney, Alexander Mackenzie, James Hastings, 3 con. Thomas Middleton) beat Prebbleton 19. Celtic 13 (tries Raitube Vasurakuta, Kaydis Hona, penalty Monty Nixon) lost to Southbridge 18. Methven 24 (tries Manasa Vula, Thomas Reekie, Henry Miller, 2 con. Reuben Early, pen. Thomas Reekie) lost to Waihora 25. Rakaia 7 (Todd Boag try, Tom Whittaker conversion) lost to Hurunui 55.
but the scoreboard man was nearly unemployed after the break, as both sides slogged it out for 40 minutes in search of the winning points. James Hastings crossed the chalk for Southern early in the second spell, and Thomas Middleton added the conversion, but that’s how it stayed until the final whistle, outstanding Southern defence keeping Prebbleton scoreless in that half. Celtic went up against perennial powerhouse Southbridge at Southbridge in the fifth and sixth playoff game. It was tough day at the office for the men in green, as they went down in a back-andforwards thriller 13-18. Celtic actually had no points on the board at the break, but Monty Nixon kicked a penalty early in the second half, and loose forward Kaydis Hona and winger Raitube Vasurakuta scored Celtic’s tries late in the piece as they charged home, but Southbridge kicked a late penalty of their own to hold out the visitors. In the last game involving a Mid Canterbury side, Rakaia played against Hurunui in the 15th and 16th playoff game, at Culverden. It was another difficult day for the Rakaia side as they lost 7-55. Rakaia loose forward Todd Boag scored a consolation try in the second half, with Tom Whittaker adding the conversion, but the scoreline told the story of the match. The Centennial Mug Senior B competition saw a wide range of results over the weekend. Methven played at home against Allenton, with Methven winning 35-12, Collegiate played at home against Celtic, with Celtic winning 29-26, Mt Somers played at Rakaia against Rakaia, with Mt Somers winning 43-0 and lastly, Hampstead was at home against Southern, with Hampstead winning Congratulations all round for Methven’s Manasa Vlua, who dotted down early in their game against Waihora on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as Waihora won 25-24. Ferrymead too keen for United By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Life in their new division has not started well for one senior Mid Canterbury Football team, while another has carried on its imperious form in the latest round of Mainland Football action on Saturday. The Mid Canterbury United First Team said in a post on their Facebook page that the club and head coach Andrew Annable had made the decision to pull the team from the Canterbury Premier League down to Division Two as a good opportunity to reset their first team side and allow younger players game time to prepare them for a higher level. They did not get the result they would have hoped for in dropping down divisions, losing their first game 4-0 against the Ferrymead Bays Keen Lads. Having gone unbeaten in the opening stage of the season in Division Five, the Mid Canterbury United Reserves made a booming start to life in Division
Four though, putting home nine goals at the Ashburton Domain against the UCAFC Snappers. For the Mid Canterbury United 17th Grade side a tough game at the Ashburton Domain saw them go down to the FC Twenty 11 U17 Shamrocks 4-2. The Shamrocks are the only side apart from the unbeaten league leaders Nomads United 17s to win more than one game so far this season. Meanwhile the Mid Canterbury United 15th Grade side continued their unbeaten run this season, travelling away to Christchurch to beat the Papanui Redwood AFC 15 Lions 3-0 in their Division Three clash. Also extending their unbeaten run was the MCUFC 13th Grade Red Devilz, who took down the Nomads United 13 Red side 5-1 at the Ashburton Domain. The Red Devilz sit second on the table, only trailing the Nomad United 13s on goal difference, a team boasting an impressive 21-plus goal difference after three games.

Adlams produce great weekend on track Ashburton harness racing trainer Simon Adlam capped a great weekend for his family when he scored victory with Itz Magical Meg at Addington Raceway on Sunday. The weekend kicked off with a bang for the Adlam family when Simon’s son Oliver recorded his first win as a trainer, courtesy of Slainte at Addington Raceway on Friday. Adlam senior said it was a proud moment to see his son get the win. “That was good. You can’t beat it when your kids are doing it and train their first winner,” he said. While Oliver has been sidelined with a rugby injury, his family have lent a Winning Ashburton combo: John Morrison and Oliver Adlam. helping hand.
“Between myself and William, my other son, we have been working the horses,” Adlam said. Adlam was celebrating a win of his own when he returned to the track on Sunday, where Itz Magical Meg won her maiden at just her second start. The four-year-old daughter of Art Major finished 11th at Ashburton on debut, and Adlam said it was a better run than it looked. “She went pretty good at Ashburton, although it might not have looked like a good run,” he said. “She was handy and then got pushed back and then had to run home. It’s always tough when you get pushed back at Ashburton.”
On Sunday Itz Magical Meg settled midfield for driver Gerard O’Reilly where they remained throughout. Turning for home the pair found themselves behind a wall of horses, however, O’Reilly was able to find some clear running room out wide, where Itz Magical Meg was able to show a good turn of foot to grab the lead and run away to a three-quarter of a length victory over No Matter Wat. Adlam said they have taken a patient approach with getting the mare to the racetrack, but it has certainly paid dividends. “She is not overly big but just needed to strengthen up, and she has done that,” he said.
