Two vehicle crash forces diversion on ensuring everyone was okay first. The accident occurred at the intersection of Mitcham Road and State Highway One at 10am, with traffic diverted through the industrial estate for an hour while the crash scene was cleaned up. Two people were transported to the Ashburton Hospital with moderate injuries. According to police at the scene the Wilson Bulk Transport Ford Ranger failed to yield, colliding with a car travelling north on State Highway One. Police said it was unclear why the driver of the ute failed to yield.

Daniel Alvey A local transport company has offered its thoughts and best wishes after a two-car crash involving one of its drivers on Monday morning. “Our thoughts are with the family of our driver and the others involved,” Wilson Bulk Transport general manager Mat Bruce said at the scene. ECan’s climate change levy irks councillor Jonathan Leask News that Ashburton could end up part-funding Environment Canterbury’s public bus transport fares is concerning the organisation’s Mid Canterbury councillor. He’s Ian Mackenzie, who thinks contributing to the annual funding of ECan’s generous public bus subsidies across Canterbury would result in zero benefits for the Ashburton District. Ashburton has no public transport, other than an on-demand community connector bus run by volunteers to and from rural

locations to the township. ECan hopes to establish a Climate Change Action Levy where all ratepayers would contribute. One of ECan’s climate change action focuses is to get more people using public buses rather than their own vehicles. Mackenzie is not convinced it is the right model and is concerned the climate change levy would be used to have the entire region subsidising public transport. “That threat of charging for public transport, because of climate change across the whole region, sits within the climate change levy,’’ Mackenzie said. “That needs to be opposed, unless it’s specifically targeted for actions we can do, which will genuinely protect our community from climate change. That

Environment Canterbury councillor Ian Mackenzie might be better flood protection.” With the impacts of the Covid still playing out, and many peo-

ple still uncomfortable about using public transport while the virus was still rampant, Mackenzie said bus patronage was only at around 70 per cent of what it was pre the pandemic. “ECan has gone ahead and pumped several million dollars into buses, which I’m not sure is the right timing,” he said. “We should have waited for Covid to finish, and it’s nowhere near finished yet, and then analyse what permanent changes are to the way people behave.” He said there were a “whole lot things we are yet to understand’’ but ECan was still insistent on “pouring money into buses as if it’s business as usual”. ECan’s annual pricing plan would introduce a $2 flat fare across greater Christchurch for metrocard holders, including

areas like Lincoln in Selwyn or Rangiora in Waimakariri. The fare is $1 for tertiary students, under-25s, and total mobility and community service cardholders. Mackenzie was also concerned that people in outlying towns were simply subsidising parents, who opted to send their children into Christchurch for school. “I’m not convinced that is something ratepayers should be asked to do,” he said.

Fina’s transgender ruling ‘perverse, grossly unfair’ Daryl Holden Swimming’s requirement for transgender athletes to transition before they are 12 to compete in elite women’s events has been called “perverse’’. That’s the view of the Ashburton Guardian’s long-standing cartoonist and trans female Mieke Moreu, who is fully transgender following surgery and lengthy hormone replacement therapy. Moreu thought the new eligibility rule expecting trans athletes to have transitioned at such a young age was morally unacceptable by Fina, swimming’s international governing body. In some countries and states, it was also legally or practically not possible to fully transition before teenage years. The move would forbid transgender athletes, who went through male puberty, from competing in elite women’s competitions. “It is a perverse Catch-22, as it is increasingly difficult for American adolescents to access gender affirming treatments,’’ said Moreu, who spent the first 48 years of her life in a man’s body and being known as Mike. “In Texas, for example, it is now illegal to help a minor transition, and for a parent it is tantamount to child abuse.’’ Moreu, though, had no problem with the need for well thought out gender rule change and eligibility requirements to make the competition fair. “I think the rules had to change because natal female athletes

Mieke Moreu: “Trans people are still people who deserve to be included — and treated fairly — in society in all things, including sport. were being forced to compete with transgender athletes, who preserved their male advantage after transition,’’ she said. But Moreu was adamant that Fina’s new transition age dead-

line and participation rules were “grossly unfair’’. “I think trans athletes should be considered for competition on a case-by-case basis, depending on when they transitioned, their

athletic training history, and their current hormone/physiological state,’’ she said. “I think this should only apply at a collegiate, national, and international level. Not at a sec-

ondary school level where participation and inclusiveness is most important.’’ Fina’s adoption of what it called its new “gender inclusion policy” also proposed establishing a new “open competition” category, which would separate transgender athletes to compete in a class of their own. Since Fina’s move, other sports have also been quick to say they would examine their policies around transgender athletes. That included NZ Rugby, which was consulting with its community and stakeholders on its transgender inclusion guidelines. Ironically, New Zealand sport has already been the international focus of transgender athlete inclusion. That happened last year when Kiwi weightlifter Laurel Hubbard became the first openly transgender woman to compete in the Olympic Games in a controversial appearance in Tokyo. Many athletes, scientists and campaigners were against her participation, suggesting Hubbard had a biological advantage due to going through male puberty. But, in front of a large contingent of media, and millions of viewers worldwide, Hubbard struggled in the competition, with three failed lifts placing last in her group. Importantly, the trans community saw Hubbard’s appearance as a step towards inclusion in the Games. That’s something not lost on Moreu, with the latest inclusivity debate having now been triggered. “Trans people are still people who deserve to be included — and treated fairly — in society in all things, including sport. So how do we accommodate them?,’’ she said. See editorial, page 17

Teaching old dogs new tricks Lili Haydon So, perhaps you can teach old dogs new tricks. That’s the view of Ashburton dog trainer and pack walker Mady Bensdorp, who is all about helping pooches learn some manners and get rid of their dirty habits. ‘’I’ve always been obsessed with dogs,’’ Bensdorp said. “I always knew I wanted to work with them.’’ And Bensdorp’s making a career out of it, having set up her dog walking and training business, Dusty Dingo Training, last year. On average, Bensdorp walks over 40 dogs per week, regardless of the weather.

“Dogs still have energy when it’s raining, and we have fun while we do it,” Bensdorp said. Now, Bensdorp has decided to write an E-book, offering tips to everyone via her popular Instagram page where she is followed by more than 1000 followers. Bensdorp insists her tips would help in many ways, from improving a dog’s behaviour when taking them for a walk. Or it cound be just stopping them knocking into you while you unpack the groceries. Adding Structure to Everyday Life has 20 pages of tips and illustrations, including work pages to help dog owners document their pooch’s progress. “People can click the link in my Instagram bio and download the book,’’ she said. “It’s easy to print or refer back to when you need to.’’

Plastering up the gaps Government’s Gib board task force welcomed Jonathan Leask A taskforce to address the nationwide plasterboard shortage is a good move, an Ashburton industry representative says. After initial scepticism at yet another Government taskforce being formed, Master Builders’ Association Ashburton president Andrea Lee said its establishment was “really positive’’. Lee said fellow master builders’ presidents were all supportive at a meeting she attended last week to discuss the taskforce. “Minister Megan Woods has identified that there is a problem that is not being addressed and has put this taskforce together to get it addressed as quick as she

can,” Lee said. “They will collectively look at the issue and see if anything can be achieved immediately or in the short term to take the pressure off. “They will also look at address-

ing the barriers for contractors have in dealing with councils and suppliers as far as what alternative products they can use. “It’s really positive and will help everyone speed things up.”

The taskforce, including key construction, building consent, and supply chain experts, would be formed to look at what more could be done to ease plasterboard shortages, the Minister for Building and Construction, Megan Woods said. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) was already working with local Government around five products. Master Builders’ Association chief executive David Kelly is one of the six taskforce members, who are set to meet for the first time this week to look at what could be done, including the potential for legislative or regulatory change. Winstone Wallboards, a subsidiary of Fletcher Building, with its GIB brand of plasterboard, makes up about 95 per cent of the New Zealand market, but has not been able to keep up with demand. The taskforce would trou-

ble-shoot the regulation of alternative plasterboard products and look at ways to streamline those currently untested in the New Zealand market. It would also explore new distribution models and provide advice on the appropriate approach to consenting, while also considering related supply chain concerns. The Commerce Commission was also undertaking a market study into whether competition was working in the residential building supplies market, with findings to be presented in December.

A major Hinds rugby milestone Daniel Alvey Hinds and rugby. They go together like salt and pepper and bacon and eggs – and next month would be a rather important one for the area and its rugby connection. July will mark 100 years of playing rugby in Hinds, with the club having been formed in 1922. Southern was then formed in 1994 after the amalgamation of the Hinds and Mayfield clubs. The 100-year mark would be commemorated with a Watters Cup club game between Southern and Rakaia at Hinds on Friday, July 8, from 7pm. A pre-game function, starting at 5pm, would also take place in the clubrooms involving past players, officials, supporters and family members. Southern Rugby Club life member Garry Brown said the occasion was a good opportunity to come together to mark the centenary and a successful amalgamation. “Hinds and Mayfield would be one of the most successful amalgamations probably in New Zealand,” he said of a rugby marriage that everyone bought into from the start. Ray Swan, who played for Hinds in 1972 and helped put together the club’s 75th jubilee book, said new pages would be included in an updated book from the past 25 years of the Southern Rugby Club. The updated book would be available from the Southern Rugby Club, Panthers Rock Country Pub, and DPI Ashburton at the end of July. The book aside, Swan said the Hinds Rugby Club had always been a staple of

PHOTO DANIEL ALVEY the community, with games always played at the domain. But, outside of the amalgamation, there have been many changes over the years.

He recalled there being only two changing sheds at one stage, but it had now grown to include clubrooms and new changing rooms.

Wedding expo a success Lili Haydon The Mid Canterbury Wedding Expo at the Ashburton Hotel was a success for local business owners. Nicole Williams, who organised Sunday’s event said nearly 200 people came through the door. “One bride said on her way out, ‘that’s the flowers and photographer done’,” Williams said. New Ashburton business Momentos’ owner Stacy Howden had a stall at the event, and even got three bookings from the event. “The main thing people were asking the vendors was where are you based? People wanted to support local,” Howden said. Howden does 3D casting of hands and feet mainly for babies, but part of her business is also framing dried wedding bouquets. “It was the perfect event for local businesses to be seen and utilised,” Williams said. Williams hoped the event would help small businesses who have been through a tough time. “We have so many talented people,” Williams said. And Hotel Ashburton owner Johny Singh came onboard with the cause and gave Williams the space to use for free. There were 30 wedding related stalls to browse, from flowers to accommodation vendors. A raffle of all sorts of goodies valued over $4000 was won by Deb Kell. Williams has not yet tallied the profits, but if there is any they will be donated to the Willowby Community Pool. According to Williams the pool needs a new changing room facility and pool cleaner for this summer.

And next month, everyone would be able to celebrate and recognise that development and rugby’s significance to the Hinds community.

New president on the block BY PAT DEAVOLL

David Acland, of Mt Somers Station, has taken on the role of Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury Provincial President. Acland replaces arable farmer David Clark, whose three-year term ended a few weeks ago. Acland and his wife Kate farm beef, sheep, and dairy on their 4000-hectare property. They originally farmed deer as well but are easing out of this due to freshwater considerations. The property runs from the Ashburton River at an altitude of 400m to the boundary of the conservation park at the base of Mt Somers at an altitude of 700m. “We run over 13,000 breeding sheep, 1300 dairy cows, and 200 head of beef cattle,” Acland said. “We also have a farm shop specialising in lambswool products, and a beekeeping operation.” Acland has been involved with Federated Farmers since

2008. He took over the meat and wool section for Mid Canterbury from Mike Salvesen and was involved in Federated Farmers at a national level on the meat and wool executive for six years. “I’m currently vice-chair of the national meat and wool section up until this coming AGM which is at the start of July this year,” he said. “This time I’m only standing for an executive role with this section.” What made him want to take on the role of provincial president? “I just think it’s important that we, as farmers, represent our views. I enjoy that side of farming – the engagement – and I felt I had the ability to do this. No farmer really has the time to do it, but it is important.” What issues are going to be at the forefront for Mid Canterbury farmers in the next few years? “Multiple things. If we go back to the National Policy Statement

for Fresh Water, Environment Canterbury is going to be revisiting its plan as part of that. That will be a body of work. “If we look at the drinking water standards, these will have ramifications for farming around water takes and the protection of those water takes in rural settings. “And then there is the Three Waters happening which as well could be a huge change in how our local democracy operates. It will be taking a huge amount of what a district council does out of its hands. “It will change the role the district council plays in our daily lives. “The structure around Three Waters and the ramifications is a hell of a story.”

Last Saturday was a stellar day for the Meadowslea Angus Stud when one of its top bulls broke a South Island record for price and beat the average sale by almost ten-fold. The bull, numbered Lot 24 R705, a rising 2-year-old angus, sold for $92,500. It was bought by KayJay Angus, a breeder in the Wairarapa. Underbidders also came from studs in the North Island. The average price for the sale was $9800. Meadowslea Angus Stud is situated just out of Fairlie and owned by the Giddings family, with father David Giddings steering the ship and son George as a first lieutenant. George Giddings said the bull came from a long line of pedigree stock and was the pick of this year’s 72 offerings. “He is a very sound bull, he walks very well with beautiful head and bone and real meaty depth,” Giddings said. “He was our heaviest bull but not our biggest which reflected his solid meaty type. “There is a lot of longevity in

his pedigree there. His grandfathers are still going at rising 12 and 13.” Giddings said R705’s sire was a bull called N166. His mother was a well-known cow sold as a 10-year-old in Meadowslea’s female sale last year to an Australian who is taking the embryos across the ditch. “His mother and his grandmother both made it to 10 years old to be sold in our female sale. “This reflects that they are really good sound cattle that last the distance. “R705 had so many things that were right in terms of his structure, his feet, and how he walked. “In terms of his figures, very good fertility and calving stats which reflect how fertile his daughters are likely to be. “And that’s what people were looking for.” The sale was run via an online platform called YourBid.

Farmers share a vision for 2032 dairying Pat Deavoll Farmers keen to participate in a vision of what dairying will look like in a decade recently took inspiration from some of the industry’s leading thinkers at Dairy 2032, an event hosted by agritech company Halter. More than 100 farmers attended, keen to have insights from some of the industry’s leading thinkers on welfare, environment, farm technology, and New Zealand dairy’s place in the world over coming years at the Ngai Tahu Farming’s Te Whenua Hou property at Eyrewell. Will Burrett, who opened Dairy 2032, said recent upheavals in Sri Lanka because of food shortages arising from a wholesale shift to organics highlighted how vital it was for policy and regulations to be backed by informed data, recognising agriculture’s first principles should always head off political aspirations. Charlotte Glass, who headed up farm systems and environmental advisory firm Agri Magic, kicked off the panel discussion. She said Canterbury dairy farmers have enjoyed something of a 10-year head start on the rest of the country’s farmers when it comes to adapting to new environmental regulations. This had given them the confidence to face the next round of changes dairy had to deal with as He Waka Eke Noa came into play determining farm emission charges. Scott McDougall wanted to see a sector in a decade’s time that could confidently look its urban customers in the eye and describe to them what a happy, healthy cow looked like, and be able to prove it. “And to do that we need information and data that proves that animal is healthy and happy. It’s critical, we can say it, but we need to prove it and if not, we lose our social licence to operate.” Pete Morgan said a decade was a rela-

More than 100 farmers gathered at the Dairy 2032 event at Ngai Tahu Farming’s Te Whenua Hou property at Eyrewell. Inclusive treatment of trans? Not

O

K, everybody up. Stretch those legs, wave your arms around to get your blood pumping because we’re going on a walk. Not any old walk either. This one’s through a metaphoric minefield where, with one wrong step, you may lose a leg, an arm, any old limb for that matter. So, who’s with me as we head out to take part in a dangerous debate about transgender athletes in sport and being fair and inclusive? I said who’s with me?? I can’t hear you. Alright, I’m out on my own. Again. But that’s all good because this is a discussion that has to be had. For that, we can thank our friends at Fina, the international body that runs world swimming. They’ve been making a splash recently – and it’s got nothing to do with movement in water – by saying that transgender swim-

Daryl Holden mers won’t be able to compete in elite open women’s events unless they medically transition before they turn 12. Before they’re 12 for goodness sake. So, in other words, they’re effectively banning transgender athletes, who have experienced male puberty, from competing in elite women’s competitions. Worse, Fina’s move has now triggered many sports to belatedly look at their transgender athlete approaches and rules. It’s a serious matter because the fair inclusion of trans athletes is something we need to get right in all codes.

But Fina. Oh, boy. One had to laugh when it was revealed that Fina’s directive was part of what they called their “gender inclusivity policy’’ and that they’re establishing an “open category” for trans athletes, which would separate them to compete in a class of their own. How is that inclusive? It’s just another example of the world gone mad and let me tell you why. But before then. let’s provide some balance. Because I agree there was a recent story in the United States where an average-ish male swimmer, who transitioned in his teens, went on to win college trophies as a female. Yep, that caused a bit of reaction. So what? It’s not as if there’s been a swag of such episodes and results occurring where trans women, born as men, have been whipping the backsides

of natural-born women in their chosen sports, resulting in hundreds of complaints about how unfair it is. Or have I missed that? Don’t think so. Key data backs up how over-reactionary and emotionally driven the whole thing has become. Since the Olympic Games introduced a rule for trans athletes to compete in 2003, over 70,000 people have become Olympians. Now, out of those 70,000 Olympians, I understand a grand total of two athletes have been trans women. One came dead last. The other came 37th out of 42. One of those, of course, was New Zealand’s Laurel Hubbard, who became the first openly transgender weightlifting woman to compete in the Olympics when she fronted up in Tokyo last year. She bombed out but her appearance was seen as a major step forward by the trans community for inclusivity. Note

the correct use of inclusivity, Fina. Publicly, I’m not aware of one approach being made to Sport New Zealand from any national sporting body asking to ban trans athletes because it might seem unfair. And why hasn’t there? Because it hasn’t been an issue – and it still isn’t. We just don’t have trans athletes making any impact at elite rugby, league, cricket, netball, pickleball or anywhere else. Those trans athletes are more obvious at the community level where, quite rightly, they’ve been warmly welcomed and embraced as true examples of the delights of sporting inclusiveness. And that’s how it should be. Sport should be for all, regardless of colour, religion, gender and sexuality. Somehow that’s got lost in Fina’s approach, which seems anything but inclusive.

A lesson in hosting a sporting event Matt Markham

P

erhaps it’s not until you experience something at a whole different level that you truly appreciate what you’re being offered on your own doorstep is seriously, underwhelming. For so many Kiwi sporting fans, the lure of heading along to watch a national, or even provincial team, in action is strong among us. If the opportunity is there, we grab it with both hands. Truth be told though, unless you’ve been lucky enough to get to experience heading to a sporting event at an international stadium or venue of class somewhere around the world, you don’t actually understand what we’re missing out on here in little old Aotearoa. I’ll admit to being a little blinded by my Kiwi patriotism about it all too. That was until a fortnight ago. I’ve just returned from a two-week stint in England, living the tourist life and taking in all that was possible, which included a trip to Trent Bridge for the last day of the second test between the Black Caps and the Brendon McCullum-coached England. The less said about the result of the match probably the better, but the experience itself of sitting in such a famed sporting arena and experiencing how the English put on a sporting event would have been the highlight, even if the Black Caps had won. We were always going to head along for the day, but never expected to not have to pay a cent to get in the gate. The Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club somewhat surprisingly announced at the end of the fourth day of play that they were opening the gates for the last day of the test. Yes, with the match – and ultimately the series on the line and all three results still very much possible – they ignored the prospect to make money and allowed cricket fans to enjoy cricket, at no cost at all. So, along we went for a free day out at the cricket. I don’t know what I expected it to be like, but I had envisaged thousands of upon thousands of people lined up at the gates queuing to get in, yet despite nearly being a full house, we walked straight up to the gate and were in our seats within two minutes. We were even walked to our seats by the friendly, yes that’s right, security guard, who welcomed us to Trent Bridge and wished us a good day, offering to help if we needed anything. Having witnessed the rudeness and negative approach from what we are offered here in New Zealand most of the time, I can’t begin to describe how refreshing that one short conversation alone was. With play under way and the unorthodox Trent Boult smashing Ben Stokes back

Jonny Bairstow, a thorn in the side for the Black Caps, but happy to have a chat in between deliveries. over his head as New Zealand tried to build a lead, it was intriguing to listen to the English supporters who, despite watching their captain get smacked around the ground, applauded every shot. Again, not something we’re really used to here. I was keen to get around the ground and have a look at everything Trent Bridge had to offer, so during the innings break a walk around the concourse I took that opportunity. There were no restricted spaces, no overtly intimidating guards watching your

every move, just a huge crowd of passionate fans enjoying their day out – no drama, no stress. The ground was littered with food carts and beverage stalls, with something for everyone on offer from a ham and cheese toastie to a full-blown roast meal, there were no limitations. And such was the efficiency of everyone behind the scenes that there was little to no wait anywhere. Same with the refreshment stalls as well, short lines for a drink and the variety that was on offer was incredi-

ble – everything priced really reasonably too. It was an eye-opening experience, and one which really hammered home just how far behind the eight-ball we are here sometimes when it comes to sporting events. We head along because we love watching live sport and cheering for our teams, but the actual experience as a whole is seriously underwhelming now for me. If you get the chance to do something similar, take it. You won’t be disappointed.

Having witnessed the rudeness and negative approach from what we are offered here in New Zealand most of the time, I can’t begin to describe how refreshing that one short conversation alone was.

Maui picks up fifth win in an all-family affair Matt Markham Smart Mid Canterbury trotter, Maui, underlined his prospects for winter racing with a strong victory at Addington on Friday night, in an all-family affair for the McCormick clan. The four-year-old son of Peak registered the fifth win of his 25-start career by dashing up the passing lane to win strongly for trainer David McCormick and his son, Lawrence who handled the driving duties. The family association doesn’t stop there though. Maui is raced by McCormick senior, along with his wife, Elizabeth, and hails from the breed of the late Doug McCormick, David’s father, being out of his former handy race mare, Shezadorabil who herself won three races. After two strong performances to open this campaign, finishing third on both occasions, the speedy squaregaiter was quick away from the stand start and

led early on Friday night before relenting the lead to take a trail. That proved to be the winning of the race, with Maui able to make full use of the slingshot up the passing lane to win and take his stake earnings to close to $50,000. The stake earning looks far from over as well, with Maui a good chance of making his way toward the newly minted Winter Reward Series at the end of July, with a $20,000 final on offer. Maui’s win was one of two trotting victories for Mid Canterbury stables over the weekend, with Warren Stapleton making his way into the winners’ circle on Sunday with maiden trotter, Notasbadasilook. The five-year-old mare, who is also by Peak, picked up the first win of her career at start number six, courtesy of a perfect drive from Kim Butt to grab victory. It was double delight for Stapleton, who also shares in the ownership of the trotter with son Deane. He’s also now closing in on 250 wins as a trainer with Sunday’s victory win 248 in New Zealand over 46 years of training.

Southern win in a thriller, Methven cruise to success Matt Markham Mid Canterbury’s senior rugby turned local on the weekend and there was no love lost as the Watters Cup stepped into full gear for 2022. Following on from the completion of the Combined Country Rugby competition, the four local sides embarked on the second round of the prestigious local competition over the long weekend, with plenty of action across the two matches. Last year’s Watters Cup finalists, Southern and Celtic, kickstarted the weekend on Thursday night with a clash under lights out at Hinds, with the David White Memorial Cup and Max Gilbert Challenge Trophy also on the line. And the match went right to the wire, with a penalty try right on full time to Southern seeing them home 32-29. It was Celtic, however, who made all the early play. A double for Nixon Brown inside the first 20 minutes saw the green machine race out to a 12-0 lead, before Thomas Middleton

put Southern in the match with a penalty. Celtic’s response was their third try for the night, this time to Cam Butler, with Elyh McKibbin adding the extras. In a see-sawing match though, Southern came charging right back late in the first half with tries to front-rowers, Adam Williamson and then Mason Briant, to tighten things up again with Celtic in control at the break, up 19-15. An early Middleton penalty in the second half put the game to within one point before Raitube Vasurakuta did what he does best and scored to give Celtic a little more breathing room, but a try for James Hastings with a Middleton conversion put the home side in front for the first time in the match on the 65-minute mark. When Brown grabbed his third almost immediately after the Southern try, Celtic were again in front, and the two sides went to war with each other for the final stages of the match, with neither side prepared to give the other an inch. Like they have all season, Southern finished strong, and after a string of scrum penalties on the 5-metre line, were awarded a penalty try which saw them take the match out and pick up five

PHOTO DANIEL ALVEY valuable competition points. Celtic didn’t go home empty handed. Their effort saw them pick up two bonus points, which could prove crucial when it comes to the business end of the competition. Then, on Saturday afternoon, Rakaia and Methven battled it out as both sides fought for their first victory in the competition, after losing out in the early round played at the start of the season. Four first half tries to the Methven side courtesy of a double of Ben Bartlett, and one each from George Hufanga and Brenton Connell put them in the box seat

for the match leading 26-8 at the break, with Rakaia’s points coming from a penalty and a try to Thomas Whittaker. Connell grabbed his second for the day shortly after the halftime break to extend that lead before Whittaker followed suit, dotting down for a second time but tries to Tait Chisman and Xavier Bartlett put the game beyond doubt, with Rakaia scoring a late consolation try through William McGoon to see the match finish at 45-20. Action this week will see Methven look to turn the tables on Southern on Saturday, while Rakaia will host Celtic in the other match.

Short and sharp Southern 32 (Adam Williamson,

Mason Briant, James Hastings, penalty tries; Thomas Middleton 2 conv, 2 pen) beat Celtic 29 (Nixon Brown 3, Cam Butler, Raitube Vasurakuta tries, Elyh McKibbin 2 conv.) Methven 45 (Ben Bartlett 2, Brenton Connell 2, George Hufanga, Tait Chisman, Xavier Bartlett tries, Ruben Early 3 conv, Sam Pollock 2 conv) beat Rakaia 20 (Thomas Whittaker 2, William McGoon tries, Whittaker 1 conv, 1 pen).

Covid strikes in All Blacks camp The All Blacks will be without coach Ian Foster and at least two frontline players for this weekend’s first test against Ireland as a Covid outbreak hits the squad. Head coach Foster, assistant coach John Plumtree and midfielders David Havili and Jack

Goodhue, both from the Crusaders, have all tested positive for the virus. The quartet are isolating and won’t re-join the team before Saturday’s test at a sold out Eden Park. With Foster and Plumtree out,

Bowlers selected for South Island duty

Winning feeling returns The Mid Canterbury United 15th grade side fought out a 4-all draw with Nomads on Saturday.

Matt Markham Victory, it’s oh so sweet. The Mid Canterbury United Seniors football side got the winning feeling back on Saturday, recording a 2-0 victory over Cashmere in front of a large and vociferous crowd of supporters on the Ashburton Domain. In a refreshed remainder of the season which has seen the side drop out of the New World Championship and down into Division Two for Mainland Football, the side picked up their first win of the new campaign in style on the weekend.

PHOTO DOUG BOVETT

It took little time on the weekend for the side to get into their groove, with Nic Eden on the receiving end of a beautiful ball over the top from Millar McLauchlan to calmly beat the keeper and give the locals an early lead. Cashmere wasn’t without their chances though, and kept fighting for a goal, with Hayden Dove turning in a tidy performance in front of the net. Mid Canterbury looked on track to make it two goals through Darren Cavill, but he was brought down in the box, with a penalty awarded. Andy Annable stepped up to the mark and promptly delivered the goal to put Mid Canterbury up 2-0, and that’s where

the scoreboard remained for the rest of the match. There was double delight in the seniors grades from the weekend, with Mid Canterbury Reserves also keeping the winning run going with a 1-0 victory over FC Twenty to go two-from-two in the Division Four Championship. Down in the age group grades, it was a little tougher. The 17th grade side were beaten 0-3 by Christchurch Boys’ High School while the 15th grade team fought out a tough 4-all draw with Nomads. The 13th grade side were also on the wrong side of the ledger, losing 6-2 in a high-scoring match to Nomads.

Four local names feature in this year’s South Island indoor bowls team – including two debutants. Grant Wilson, Mat Bassett, Jeremy Markham and Rowena Mackenzie were all named as part of the 24-strong squad during the recent indoor bowls nationals in Porirua. It’s a return to the side for Wilson, who will play the men’s singles when the South takes on the North later in the year, and the same for Bassett who retains his spot in the side. He’ll lead the fours team in what is a very strong men’s squad. Markham steps into the mould for the first time off the back of some strong recent form and will lead the men’s triples, while Mackenzie slots into the lead position in the women’s fours, also making her debut in the side. The two sides will clash for the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy in Upper Hutt on Saturday, August 13. Meanwhile, Canterbury got the better of old foe Ashburton when the two sides met on Sunday for their annual representative fixture. The battle, which each year is hotly contested, was this year held on Canterbury ground at their purpose-built Kearneys Road stadium, with the hosts emerging victorious with 77 and a half game points ahead of Ashburton’s 63. The next representative fixture for Ashburton on the mats is the triangular tournament to be held in Ashburton against teams from South Canterbury and North Otago on Saturday, July 9.
