Pacific Ocean gobbling up the Lowcliffe coastline Lili Haydon Climate change is on our doorstep – and it’s becoming increasingly visible and now a safety issue in Lowcliffe. A section of Ocean View Road, between Brodgens Road and Crows Road had become more unstable as a result of coastal erosion in the area, according to Ashburton District Council infrastructure services group manager, Neil McCann. “During the May 2021 floods, a new sight rail was installed around the corner with approximately one metre of stable land behind it,’’ McCann said. But that didn’t do much. Now, less than a year later, the erosion from a recent exception-

ally high king tide has washed away the extra width, completely eroding the land right up to the sight rail. And the road is only about 100 metres away from a driveway in the Lowcliffe area which is home to about 1500 residents, who are mainly farmers. “The road has been closed until a decision is made about future options,’’ McCann said, adding that a report would go to the council about what to do next. The council’s roading manager, Mark Chamberlain, is hinting towards closing the road, saying in the past 50 years “that coastline has got a lot closer”. “There is quite a bit of erosion. A closure is probably the only way to go. “We are not going to be building a new road for those low volumes there and the local farmers are pretty much the only ones to use it,” Chamberlain said.

Ashburton SPCA team leader Ashleigh Murray would be right behind any moves to follow Selwyn’s lead and make cat microchipping mandatory. Her cat tagging view comes after our neighbouring Selwyn District Council has introduced mandated microchipping of domestic cats aged over four months old from July 1. There are currently no plans for the Ashburton district to follow suit, but Murray said microchipping cats would free up a lot of time and resources. “It would help reunite stray and missing cats to their owners a lot faster,” she said. Currently the majority of cats coming into the SPCA are not chipped, she said. Unchipped cats then become the responsibility of the SPCA if an owner is not found after seven days. The SPCA already microchips all of its cats up for adoption, so Murray’s

Kitty tagging Cat owners are responsible for the one-off cost of microchipping and registration for the life of their furry friend with the approved microchip registry, the New Zealand Companion Animals Register (NZCAR). Microchipping can be done at any local vet while the registration with NZCAR is often done by the vet at the time of microchipping, or by SPCA/Rescues at the time of adoption. tagging of our furry friends is understandable. But mandatory cat microchipping is not common in New Zealand, with Selwyn to become just the first council in the South Island, and the fourth nationally to do so. They would join the Palmerston North City, Wellington City, and Whanganui District councils to have made it compulsory.

The Selwyn council could also fine cat owners up to $20,000 for repeated microchipping and registration breaches. Making cat microchipping mandatory in Ashburton hasn’t been ruled out, but Mayor Neil Brown said the topic hadn’t been raised. “To do as the Selwyn council has done, we would need a request from the public,’’ he said. “If council deemed it necessary, we would have to amend our bylaw to allow cats to be microchipped or wait until the bylaw is due for review and look at it then. Rather than the council instigate the process, Brown said it was appropriate for the community to raise and council then pick up on it. “In the last year, we haven’t had a request for microchipping of cats.”

Road rage rant at council

Wilson fires up over funding ‘tourist roads’ Jonathan Leask An Ashburton councillor is furious at the intention of spending more money on “tourist roads”. Councillor Stuart Wilson slammed the proposed direction of the Ashburton District Council’s $1.7 million of additional roading funding, saying it was all going on just two roads. “I’m very disappointed with where you are spending the money,” Wilson told the council’s roading manager Mark Chamberlain. “You are spreading $1.7m on (Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road), which is a damn tourist road. “I know it’s a busy road, but I thought we put $1.7m in to be spread across the district. “The majority of our maintenance is going into those two roads.” In the council’s subsidised road rehabilitation funding, Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road, part of the Inland Scenic Route 72, has $1.75m of works across five sections and Thompsons Track has $730,400. That equates to 67 per cent of the total $3.68m budget. From the additional $1.7m taken from the forestry reserve for unsubsidised road funding, Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road

Road rage: Ashburton Councillor Stuart Wilson (inset) is disappointed that even more money is earmarked for repairs on Arundel Rakai Gorge Road. It’s part of a planned $1.7 million spend on what he calls “tourist roads’’. PHOTO SUPPLIED/ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL ($492,200) and Thompsons Track ($424,200) combine for 53 per cent of the spend. Wilson said he knows the decisions were based on traffic volume, but “there are roads just as important” to the district. Chamberlain said that the two roads have the most work scheduled because they have most of the potholes and the

failures on the network. “If we look 10 years down the track we shouldn’t have to be spending money there.” He said they are the roads that, from a safety aspect, need the work done. In his report to the council, Chamberlain said the rehabilitation work would eliminate anything other than minor rou-

tine maintenance, second coat seals and reseals for at least 25 years. It would also avoid using resources for ongoing patching to hold the older failed sections of pavement. But Wilson disagreed, suggesting the funding should be spread further across the district and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency should be stumping up more

money for the two busy roads. “Those [two] roads are semi-tourist roads and I think if NZTA don’t want to help us spend more money on those roads, I say stiff luck,” Wilson said. “People can growl and you can say to NZTA, ‘you are not giving us enough money to maintain those roads’.”

‘Realistic’ annual plan budget adopted Jonathan Leask The adoption of one of the Ashburton District’s biggest rate increases in over a decade is a “realistic budget”. The near 10 per cent average rates increase was green-lighted

by the Ashburton District Council yesterday when it adopted its 2022-23 annual plan. “I think we have done a very realistic budget,” councillor John Falloon said. “It will be interesting to see where other territorial authorities are in 15 months’ time when they report on their actual results to the end of June 2023 and where we will be because I don’t think we will have to dip into reserves or anything like that to get

through because we have done a realistic budget.” Mayor Neil Brown highlighted that the external pressures from inflation, Covid-19, and supply chain issues were “not our friend in this year’s budget”. “It is going to be an interesting year ahead,” Brown said. “This is our best estimate and I think it is a pretty accurate estimate. “We will be doing everything we can to stick to it and deliver

the work programme.” Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan said the council had left no stone unturned during the process. “The 9.4 per cent seems very high but we have put the work in. We have looked at everything.” Behind the 9.4 per cent average rise is inflation factored in at 5 per cent, flood recovery, new drinking water regulation compliance and the completion of the new library and civic centre. Any projects carried over from

the 2021/22 financial year will go before the council in a report for deliberation over the future of those projects.

Ag Class reunites

THEN

Daniel Alvey They don’t know why they get together every few years, but now they do they can’t stop. They are the Ag Tech class of 1961, who met this week just over 60 years after they first walked into teacher, Bill Corbett’s class at the Ashburton Technical College. Event organiser Phillip Crozier keeps the class together through regular email updates of any news amongst the group. There were about 40 students in the class and all were still alive into their 70s, including the teacher. In the past few years nine of the class have passed. Crozier said almost all of the class went on to do something based with the land. At the get together he told a story of him and a fellow classmate who were the first to get the cane in the class after talking when the teacher was. Teacher Bill Corbett now lives in Methven and is very much cemented in the community, being one of the founding group of Methven Lions and helping Mt Hutt skifield get off the ground. Corbett, who could not make the meeting due to illness, still remembers his teaching days fondly, according to his wife Patricia Corbett. The ag class lasted three years for most, taking the 13-year-olds up to 5th form and School Certificate. It covered everything to do with farming and land with Corbett taking the class on trips across the region. “Without Bill teaching me English I’m not sure if I would have passed school cert,” said class member Colin Maw, adding that most did ag because they did not want to be lawyers or accountants. Now the class has passed its 60th anniversary there is no sign of stopping anytime soon.

“We thought we’d give it a couple of weeks to let it get higher in the sky and make it clearer to see.” Perkins is hoping the weather delivers a clear sky to make it as visible as possible. While the star cluster is the focus of the viewings Perkins said there will be other things to look at. “There should be at least three planets in the morning sky, there should be Jupiter, Saturn and Mars,” Perkins said. Perkins said he was unsure how many people will brave the cold, but events in the past have drawn 30 to 40 people.

There’s reform underway to ensure New Zealand’s three waters system meets the needs of today, and the growing challenges of population growth and climate change, and potential natural disasters. A key focus is on creating the scale and structural changes that will enable the significant investment required to upgrade water pipes and build new treatment plants across the country. This will come at a high cost, beyond what councils and ratepayers can afford. The Water Services Entities Bill will shift water services from 67 councils to four new water service entities owned by each region’s councils on behalf of their local communities. While councils will own the entities on behalf of their communities, the entities will operate independently, enabling strategic long-term investment without being subject to competing demands. It’s important to get this right so that all New Zealanders can continue to have confidence in our three waters system into the future, so we encourage you to contribute to this process. Skatepark now vested with Council Waste plan

draws good feedback

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown politely declined to take a spin around the Methven skatepark yesterday; the body was willing but the mind called caution.

A waste minimisation plan that proposes a new kerbside collection for food waste has attracted 129 submissions and the Council is pleased with the enthusiastic response.

The skatepark was built by a group of parents who wanted a healthy outdoor activity for their kids and it has now been officially handed over to Council to maintain into the future. Parents Sally-Ann Kircher and Liz McMillan sealed the exchange by handing over a much-loved stakeboard that has seen plenty of action on the concrete bowls and ramps since the skatepark opened in 2020.

Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann said the majority of the submissions on the draft Waste Minimisation and Management Plan focused on the proposal to introduce a food waste collection for households and offer it as a user-pays service to businesses.

The project has been a mission for more than 10 years, after the Canterbury earthquakes damaged Methven’s indoor skatepark. Parents of the town held a public meeting and proposed some alternative activities, then Mrs Kircher spotted a skatepark in Wanaka and thought it would be an ideal fit in Methven. Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan was among parents to join KidzMethven and she said the group first had to find appropriate land, then set about fundraising $150,000 to build the skatepark. Council offered land on McMillan Street and a design first sketched on the back of a serviette at the Green Parrot became the concept plan. The idea was to provide a safe place for young people to ride their skateboards, scooters and bikes.

Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown, Sally-Ann Kircher (centre) and deputy Mayor Liz McMillan at the official handing over of the Methven skatepark this week.

Ms McMillan said the group applied for grants and ran fundraisers that ranged from selling teeshirts to organising fireworks and movie nights. The Methven Community Board also gave its backing, and some financial help. “We begged and borrowed and leaned on our community, which has been so generous, helping with fencing, lights and landscaping. We think the skatepark is a real asset to Methven and it has the potential to host skate jams and other competitive events.”

Mayor Brown said Council would now oversee maintenance on the skatepark, and that included the gardens, rubbish collection and mowing. “Methven parents have worked very hard to create this great facility and it is well used by the kids of the town. It would be great to see some skateboarding tourists check it out too.” Council contributed $10,000 to the skatepark project in its development stages and has included $7540 in its 202223 Annual Plan to maintain the site.

Standing the test of time We started the year trying to bring many roads back up to scratch following the floods of May 2021 and have ended it by agreeing to draw $1.7 million from reserves to keep up that momentum - through a roading programme of repairs, renewals and maintenance that is part of our Annual Plan 2022-23. That Annual Plan sets out an average 9.4 per cent rate rise for the coming financial year, and that has been driven by the rising costs of goods and services everywhere and property revaluations that will impact urban people the most. The budget for this period was difficult and is about needs rather than wants. We have some big projects still on the go: the library and civic centre continues to take shape on Baring Square East and will inject many more 1

workers into the CBD when Council moves into it next year. The detailed business case for a second urban bridge is also progressing and that will be back before Council on 17 August. Our roading staff and the consultant engineers have been meeting with stakeholders about the proposed design, and I will be on a plane to Wellington to talk to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and deputy Grant Robertson as soon as the costs are known. Much of our other work has been business as usual, and that is ongoing but crucial work to ensure we get clean water from our taps, that our wastewater is dealt with properly and our rubbish collected and disposed of. It has been great to see the CBD come back to life and the importance of that project, and the job well done, was acknowledged with a commendation at local government awards recently. A Royal tree planting tour around the

“Some other submitters were against the food waste collection altogether.” If Councillors adopted the plan as proposed, staff would investigate options for how the food waste collection could operate and how much it would cost. Further consultation with the community would be held once that work was completed, likely during an upcoming Annual or Long Term Plan. The draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan aims to reduce waste going to landfill; in 2020, nearly 4000 tonnes of material was prevented from going to landfill, through recycling and reuse. “We know we can divert more and at this stage, and we wanted to obtain the community’s feedback regarding a household food waste collection service and our other proposed actions.”

Neil Brown, Mayor The last day of June marks the end of Council’s financial year and a 12-month period that has been challenging, uncertain and rewarding all at the same time.

“There was a range of views from the community, with some supporting an opt-in service and others wanting the collection expanded to include garden waste as well.

district, to plant seven London Plane trees to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee year, was another reminder about projects that will stand the test of time. This will be my last column ahead of the Local Body Elections, as the preelection period begins on 8 July and there are rules around communication and campaigning in my role as Mayor. That doesn’t mean elected members stop work, we will all be carrying on in the business of Council until a new group is elected on 8 October.

Councillors will hear from submitters and deliberate on feedback on the draft on 6 July, with the final form of the plan due to be adopted by Council on 27 July. Both meetings will be livestreamed. On 6 July, Councillors will also consider 28 submissions received on the draft Trading in Public Places Bylaw. People can view the submissions for both consultations online at ashburtondc.govt. nz/haveyoursay

Nominations for roles as district councillors, Mayor and Methven Community Board members open on 15 July and Council will hold an evening for potential candidates on 19 July. Water meters rolling out for Methven trial ACL is making good progress on a project to install 1200 water meters on Methven properties, as part of a trial to assist with the management of the water supply and identify leaks.

“Now they have begun installing the water meters and as at the end of last week about 300 had been fitted.” The contractor is working street-by-street and Methven residents can expect a card in their letterbox advising when water will be shut off in their area for meters to be installed. “The card will tell residents the date and time of the shut off, and how long it will last. We advise people to make sure they have enough drinking water and the jug full. It can take three or four hours to do a typical street.” Staff undertaking the work may also require access to an outside tap.

PUBLIC NOTICES A typical water connection in Methven, during and after meter installation.

Installing the water meter usually involves excavating around the toby, installing a manifold (if there is not one already) and then fitting the meter. “A survey in April showed there were about 400 properties that required new manifolds and they typically have older pipe connections,” Mr McCann said. “The meters will be read digitally using radio technology similar to bluetooth, by a staff member in a vehicle, going down the street every six to eight weeks.” Council has previously estimated up to 65 per cent of water in the Methven community water supply was

unaccounted for in the system. “Once we get meters on all the connections we can determine where the water is actually going and whether there is leakage is on the public network or on private property. “The information will also eventually be used to prioritise acoustic leak detection activities on the public network.” He said education around water use was also part of the wider programme and in the future Council would be helping residents understand the data collected from their meters.

SMOKE-FREE FIRES

Winter is upon us, and we want everyone to be warm and cosy in their homes. A smoke-free fire means a warmer, cheaper fire – and cleaner air for us all to breathe. Environment Canterbury has started its winter air campaign and is urging people to remember these three things to ensure a smoke-free fire: • Use of dry, well-seasoned wood • Adopting good burning technique • Use of a modern, well-maintained burner. Ensuring your wood is dry and wellseasoned is key to burning a hotter, more efficient fire with less smoke. It’ll also save you money as you’ll use less wood to achieve a better result. See a list of Trusted Good Wood Merchants at warmercheaper.co.nz, and watch some video tips on burning "upside down", identifying when your chimney needs cleaning and learn how to stack like a pro.

Society members will be present at the gallery everyday throughout the exhibition, so this is a great opportunity to visit and learn more about one of Ashburton’s longest established art organisations. Your Stars

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’re physically strong. When you move, life moves with and because of you. A sense of connection prevails. The whole universe breathes with you. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Ambition is a form of optimism. It’s a quality that has its drawbacks, but there’s something innocent and playful about this latest ambition of yours, which will set an interesting chain of events in motion. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Gather up inspiration. It may feel passive at first, but you need to take things in before you can expect yourself to turn out good work. What expands your dreaming power expands your doing power. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Eliminate obvious distractions, activities that occupy time without feeding you in any meaningful way – the equivalent to junk food. Good things rush in to fill the void. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): People want to please you. While you’d love it if they could figure out how to do this on their own, it’s a lot easier just to share your preferences, clarify your boundaries and make your expectations known. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): To achieve what someone has, learn the routines that brought the result. Ask for the steps, and learn the best practices. What you want is so doable with consistent effort. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): More togetherness may not be the answer. Brilliant affiliations require space and freedom. Relationships shine when there is enough atmosphere around them to let the light beams bounce, stretch and gleam. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): People feel comfortable and open around you. The flow of information might be a little more than you bargained for. Stay focused and you’ll sense where the healthy boundaries need to be erected. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There’s a time to say yes to everything, and you’ve already been there and done it. Now you have many more options than you have time to properly fulfil, and it’s time to start saying no. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Take care of responsibilities as early in the day as possible so you can seize an afternoon adventure. The lead will be as subtle as a thread. One tug and everything starts to open. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Because you make it look easy, someone will say, “I could have done that,” and maybe so, but they didn’t. Be proud of your choices and your timing. Your strut is earned. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): No need to chase assets or hide flaws. Instead, look around and ask, “What more can I accept here?” A power surge comes from letting go of that energy drain known as resistance.

Break the shackles, it’s time to be free M

aybe it’s time to break the shackles and let New Zealand live free once

more. It’s been such a long time since we’ve felt like there’s been an element of normalcy to everyday life. It might feel like we’re not very restricted in the way we operate day-to-day life, but compared to other places in the world, we’re what seems like a decade behind in a whole lot of aspects. I’ve just returned from a trip to England for a couple of weeks and to say the freedom enjoyed there was refreshing would be an understatement. Now, before someone jumps up and down and suggests that it’s negligent of me to suggest we should return to pre-Covid life, and that there are still cases out there in the community and we need to be cautious – I’m aware.

Matt Markham But it’s the same around the world. And while our protections have been largely successful, there comes a time in life where you need to break free of it all and just get on with life. Spending some time in London for a few days, I couldn’t believe the way people were just moving about everyday life. Hundreds of thousands of people using the London Underground on a daily basis with its poor ventilation and close quarters, yet not a mask in sight. The same at the London Theatre, more than 2000 people jammed in like sardines, but not a

Covid related message in sight, no requirement to cover up and look out for your fellow human. Even getting off the plane upon arrival was an eye-opener.

one instance where the threat of Covid interrupted life during my time over there. And it came in the most bizarre of locations. A ten-pin bowling alley.

I’ve just returned from a trip to England for a couple of weeks and to say the freedom enjoyed there was refreshing would be an understatement.

After being reminded frequently to keep a mask on for the entirety of the close to 30 hours of transit, being able to remove it as soon as I stepped off the plane at Heathrow airport and not having to put it back on again until I boarded to come home made a mockery of it all. Incidentally, there was only

There was no requirement to social distance, or to wear a mask – but I wasn’t able to get my hands, or feet in this instance, on a pair of bowling shoes. They declared they weren’t handing them out due to the threat of Covid. Yes, that’s right. Transmission of Covid through sharing of shoes. I can’t actually begin to de-

scribe how different it felt. Covid was still around and people near and around us while we were there contracted it, but they carried on with life – no isolation, no rigorous testing regime, no loss of modern-day life simplicities. They just deal with it and move on. And as we move closer to the day that our borders open completely and we welcome all and sundry back to the Kiwi way of life, it’s hard – having experienced how the other half live, so to speak – to see why we can’t be moving in the same direction. Going to a café or restaurant and not wearing a mask, but needing to put one on in shops is almost laughable. And if that’s what we’re still offering up to international visitors when the time comes, it’ll be them who are laughing. All the way home.

12 CLUB NEWS Ashburton Golf Club

No frost last Saturday and a lovely mild winter’s day brought a good crowd down to the Brandon. The main games of the day were the quarter-finals of the Presidents Trophy and plate. Some great games took place and we now have eight very strong semi-finalists. The Trophy has got a very over 60s look to it and not a lot of shots given or taken across the games. First up is Peter Walker against Chris Lovelock. Pete had a very close game against Stu Dunlop whilst Chris sent young Seb to bed with no supper. On the other side of the draw Brian Nuttall will take on Brent MacGregor. Nutts had a tough game, only getting over Brian Fauth on the last, whereas Arkright had to go one hole more to finish off Lefty. Two cracking semi-finals. Who makes the final? Pete and Brent is my call. In the plate semis we have Jordy Bird, he spanked top seed and top qualifier Richie Mc, who can’t seem to buy a win at the moment. Jordy now takes on his young pups team-mate Matt Tait in what should be a great game. They will play alongside Paddy and Hoppy who will battle it out in the other semi. I reckon this will be a bit of a one-horse race, so who will make the final? Jordy will be playing a six foot plus, 50-something hunk! After golf on Saturday, we have a social night to watch the first All Blacks v Ireland test. Happy hour from 5pm, pool competition, $1000 on the bar if the first try scorer bet comes in. A bit of halftime Karaoke featuring Ash Vegas’ very own Elvis and a courtesy van to get you home. Members, partners and friends, come on down and have a blowout. Hopefully everyone doesn’t party too hard as we have pennants across the district on Sunday. The scratch teams head to Timaru Levels. The A team take on the hosts the B team play Point and Davo’s Redpath boys take on Tinwald. Shane and the Alex boys head to Point to play Rakaia. In the Patterson grade, Brandon’s only team, the Old Dogs take on Temuka at Highfield. The other team, previously known as Young Pups have been cast out and are now known as the Black Lambs, also travel to Highfield to give Mayfield an easy win. Good luck to everyone playing this weekend. Pop on down to the club and join in the fun. Good golfing.

Ashburton Bridge Club

It is not too often that a bridge deal is such that either pair can make 11 tricks (or more), each in a different suit, but this one does just that. Dealer, North, with 15 points and 5 Diamonds will open 1 Diamond. Now Eats can make the bold decision to pre-empt with 3 Spades, showing less than 10 high card points and a 7 card suit. South enters the bidding with 4 Hearts and West, with his excellent Spade support and high value Diamonds, contributes 4 Spades. North raises to 5 Hearts, and an assertive East bids 5 Spades. Let us take the case where 5 Spades is the final bid. South, on lead, has no way of knowing that a Club lead will hold declarer, East to his contract of 5 Spades (11 tricks), and will probably choose a Heart of his singleton Diamond. Either of these 2 leads will allow East to make all 13 tricks, as he discards his 2 losing Clubs on dummy’s Diamond suit. Now the alternative scenario where North could decide to bid 6 Hearts – West, on lead, could well choose the Spade K which will hold the trick, but what comes next? Knowing that North and South are both out of Spades (there were only 2 missing), he must switch and the only suit that shows any promose is the Diamonds, so the Diamond A follows and the 6 Heart contract is 1 down. Of course, should South have been left to play in 5 Hearts, exactly the same defence is necessary to stop the making of an overtrick.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions

The 42nd Annual Changeover Dinner of Ashburton Pakeke Lions was held at Hotel Ashburton and in the absence of President Lion Robert Spencer the MC for the evening was Lion Milner Jacob. Milner extended a warm welcome to a large turnout of members and visitors from various local Lions Clubs.

He also welcomed District Governor Christine Stewart & Vice District Governor Garth Bateup. Apologies were read by Lion Bob Rodgers. Lion Malcolm McCormick proposed a toast to the Visitors which was replyed to by DG Christine Stewart. Lion Joe Butchard then toasted Lions International outlining the work that LCIF does around the world to elevate disasters and various medical problems which has continued by the 1.4 million members of the Lions Clubs which was started by Melvin Jones in Chicago in 1917. VDG Garth Bateup replyed on behalf of Lions Club International. A Toast to Wives and Partners was proposed by Lion Trevor Andrews and replyed to by Stephanie Butchard. Grace and Thought for the Day was read by Margaret Pawsey. DG Christine then inducted a new member, Mr. Dennis Bird, into the Club. Dennis was sponsored by Lion Jim Young, and he was welcomed and wished all the best by those present. Presidents Appreciation Club Awards were presented by DG Christine to Lion Bob Crane and Lion Derek Prebble. Lion Trevor Tindall & Robin Ford 10 year chevron; Lion Graeme Mabley 20 year chevron; Lion Derek Prebble 25 year chevron; Lion Arthur Pawsey 40 year chevron; & Lion Murray Falconer 50 year chevron. The prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for exceptional services to Lions over a long period of years were presented to Lion Bob Rodgers and Lion John Lynch. The Presidents Report was read on behalf of Robert Spencer by MC Milner Jacob. In Robert’s comprehensive report he thanked the Club Membership for another successful year and lamented the loss of four members during the year being; Lions Noel Lowe, Ron Paterson, Owen Everest and past member Jim Allison. These members gave their all for Ashburton Pakeke Lions. He concluded that another successful Charity Market had been run. Induction of the New Board for 2022/23 was performed by VDG Garth Bateup in the absence of President Elec. Lion Jim Young who honoured his oath of office by telephone. Lion Dave Bennett read Jim Youngs acceptance speech whose theme for the year is “Be Realistic - Yet Optimistic”. All members of the board were invited to stand at the front of the gathering to honour their oath. VDG Garth thanked Lion Robert for his year as President and wished the Club and new President Lion Jim Young all the best for the coming year. Lion Jim Martin thanked DG Christine for all her help, during what was a difficult year, and presented her with flowers. Raffles were drawn and Tailtwister Trevor Andrews fined members for misdemeanors that had happened to them during the month. MC Milner thanked all present for attending and the meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. Members showed their appreciation to Milner for officiating the evening. The July Meeting of the Ladies Craft Group is to be held on Monday 11th July at Edith Paterson’s Home at 10 a.m.

Ashburton Woodworkers Ashburton Woodworker Bill Healey’s walnut ‘porcupine’ stand.

President Steve Wise welcomed 18 members to a mid-winter turnout. Brief mention made regarding the Fun Day held in Timaru and who the eventual

winners of the competition were. It appears Timaru woodworkers won all the trophies. Show and Tell: Les Mattingley: several model trucks, bulldozer, pyrography figures, Geoff Brown: walnut platter, John Howe: partly constructed chair, Roger Scammell: recycled timber, too good to burn, a case to hold a cornet instrument, Bill Healey: a cleverly made zip up vase, a walnut “porcupine” stand holds 25 pens. Merv Peck demonstrated multi axis turning. A three glued block of wood, using two cedar blocks on the outsides with a walnut block in the middle. Mounted in the lathe using a worm chuck at the head stock end and a steb end at the tail stock. The centres already marked and predrilled. With a slow speed Merv with a sharp roughing gouge began to turn the block into almost a cylinder, leaving the mid-section untouched. The block then turned sideways between centres, rounded then sanded. The block then band sawed through the middle using a specially adapted jig to hold the uneven item for stability. Merv then marked the centres of the two blocks on the walnut side then drilled a hole for the worm chuck. Back into the lathe a recess turned into the cedar side, once satisfied the rounded block turned round so that the walnut end was on the outside. Using a turn master gouge Merv hollowed out the centre creating a two toned interestingly shaped bowl. Thanks, Merv, for you showing your skills in this demonstration.

Hinds Women’s Institute The Hinds Women’s Institute members met recently in the Hinds Community Centre for their annual Winter Mini Show. Sadly, attendance was down due to illness or prior commitments, which in turn meant that entries were down too. However, the entries, which were judged by Mrs Rae Wilson, were of a very pleasing standard. The results are as follows: Hanna Cup for Most Points – Jenny Sinclair. The Douglas Vase for Flower section – Jenny 1st, Betty Wilson & Rosa Bennett 2nd equal, The Bronze Vase for Vegetable section – Jenny 1st, Ruth Sheppard & Annette Simister, The Craft Thimble – Jenny 1st, Ruth 2nd, Betty 3rd. The Teal Cup for Cooking section – Ruth 1st, Jenny 2nd. Meanwhile, in the Davison Room, the formal meeting was being conducted by President Valmai McKenzie. Members were welcomed, apologies accepted, the Ode and Aspirations delivered, Minutes and Conference notes read, and Business dealt with. Silence was observed to honour the passing of our former members Rona McConnell and Gwen Mattingley. Food parcels and soup, donated by the members and later delivered to Hinds elderly, were much appreciated. Thanks to everyone who helped with this spirit of giving. The Thought for the day was very appropriate – “In life, as in knitting, don’t leave loose ends: take time to thank the people who matter in your life.” A welcome cup of tea and fellowship concluded an enjoyable afternoon. PS. We congratulate Jude Vaughan on being elected as the NZ Women’s Institute President. She will do well!

Marg Verrall on behalf of Mid Canterbury Rural Women receives the Ashburton Medal for significant achievement or contribution for the organisation’s work during the Floods of May, 2021.

Mid Canterbury Rural Women NZ Provincial

It was a great pleasure to attend the Ashburton District Council Awards where Mid Canterbury Rural Women Provincial was awarded the Ashburton Medal for their contribution to the Ashburton District, in particular to the Rural Community in 2021. It was very special to receive this honour which I consider was made possible by the huge contribution or many groups and individuals from our local community and from many outside our province. What a wonderful area we live in when you consider how much was so generously given in time, food, goods and compassion when the Flood of ’21 affected many of our farmers. This award is for all those who contributed in some way, which in turn enabled our Rural Women to support those farmers in need. A big reminder of planned events for you to attend. The Chainsaw information Day on Tuesday July 5, will focus on battery chainsaws, maintenance, safety and operation. The Movie fundraiser “Phantom of the Open” on Sunday July 17 at 5pm. Tickets are still available. Proceeds go to supporting our Scholarship programme and Life Education through the Harold Club. Our next meeting is on Friday 8th July at the Sinclair Centre, 9.45am. Guest Speaker. Any queries please contact President, Marg on 302-4717 or 027 2677 600.

Women’s B Grade: Winner: Mellory Watson, 2nd: Elyssa McDonnell.

Squash circuit was held last weekend at the Methven Squash Club’s courts at the Methven Domain with strong numbers, and a strong quality of players stepping onto the court for the popular event. Played across three days, the competition saw the best of the best on court going head-tohead across 10 separate grades, including an impressive seven men’s grades. Blenheim’s Paul Moran was the best of the bunch in the men’s competition, taking out the open event in a line-up described by many as one of the best seen for a number of years. He emerged victorious ahead of Simon Slade in the final. The Women’s Open went the way of Timaru’s Lily Rae, who edged past Kelsi Carrick in the final to take the top spot in another hotly contested competition. The Men’s A Grade title went to Lester McKee ahead of Flynn Brookland, while Meagan Bell claimed the women’s event ahead of Ellen Pryor. The circuit takes a break this weekend ahead of the Pleasant Point Open on July 8 and 9, before returning to Mid Canterbury for the following two weeks for the Ashburton Collegiate Open and then the Mayfield Open. Methven will get another chance to impress later in the season when they hold the annual Midlands Open early in September. Right – Eyes firmly on that little black ball. With promotion and relegation matches lying in wait next week, there’s a lot to play for in Mid Canterbury Premier Netball tonight.

Laying it all on the line

Tonight’s match-ups Premier 1

Giant-killers they may not yet be, but you can bet your last dollar it won’t stop Southern from trying it out tonight at the EA Networks Centre, with their spot in the top flight of Mid Canterbury Netball on the line. With promotion and relegation looming ahead of the final, championship, round of the season in Premier Netball for this season, it’s all on the line tonight for a number of teams across the three competitions with a number of outcomes still very much possible. The challenge for Southern is immense. And if they’re to keep their standing in Premier 1 then they’ll need to do what no other team has been capable of this season, beat the high-flying Celtic. Joint on the bottom of the standings with Methven, Southern’s issue is a far greater points differential than their fellow country club. They’d need to win and hope Methven lose against Hampstead to overtake them. While it will have no significance on the overall standings,

the opening match in Premier 1 tonight could be just as entertaining. Mt Somers, who caused an upset last week when they beat Methven, will have the chance to do it again when they take on United in what promises to

their match tonight against Methven B the opportunity to head into next week’s clash with the bottom placed team in Premier 1 after tonight’s round. At the other end of the table, Hampstead B will head to promotion relegation next week

In Premier 2, Rakaia are assured a shot at the top-grade next week in what has been a remarkable return to the local Premier competition for the club.

be an intriguing match. United come in off a loss last week to Southern, so will be out to right some wrongs – but certainly won’t be taking the match easy considering what unfolded last week. In Premier 2, Rakaia are assured a shot at the top-grade next week in what has been a remarkable return to the local Premier competition for the club. They started in Premier 3 and are yet to taste defeat, with

with no points to show for their round two efforts, and will take on the winner of Premier 3, which will be Methven Shearmac should they beat Ashburton College B in the final game of the night, tonight. If they happened to lose, the winner of the Ashburton College 10A and Hampstead U18 game will draw level with them on points and the final standings will come down to points differential, in which the Methven side are well served.
